This Disney masterpiece from 1940 will hold up forever precisely because it doesn't restrain or temper the most elemental emotions and themes germane to its story. Based on the Collodi tale about a wooden puppet who wants to become a real boy, Pinocchio is among the most magical, mythical, and frightening films to come from the studio in its long history. A number of scenes make permanent impressions on young minds (just ask Steven Spielberg, who quoted the film more than once in Close Encounters of the Third Kind), and the songs ("When You Wish upon a Star") can't be beat. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
A Great Lie Lesson for Pinocchio.......2007-05-22
I love Pinocchio when he lies. His nose grew and grew longer and sure gives me an idea how creative author has. It's original powerful animation that Walt Disney has to present. Also I must add when Pinocchio asking the creator Why, Why, and Why and suddenly I asked my parents why Pinocchio asking Why's. A perfect family animation film.
Was my father favorite carttoon !.......2007-04-13
My father loved Disney 's Pinocchio as a child and I still had the video tape of the carttoon in his memory !
My least favorite Disney animation.......2007-04-09
I've enjoyed a lot of classics by Walt himself - Dumbo, Bambi, 101 Dalmatians, Lady and the Tramp etc. But I just cannot bring myself to like Pinocchio. I'm sorry, but it looked like was made for babies, or four or five year olds at the most. Although, even at the age of five, I found it too childish. I've heard some reviewers say that this film is quite dark, but I just cannot believe that! Firstly, they tried too hard on the animation. It was far too saturated. The colour is all screwed up. The acting is poor. The only good well-developed character is Jiminy Cricket. The other characters are very underdeveloped, so I didn't really care what happened to them. They made Pinocchio really sickly sweet, and I didn't feel for him, he was just annoying. The plot is ridiculous. It was just Pinocchio and Jiminy running into one problem after another. Oh, and the donkey scene is not disturbing - it's just plain stupid!
All in all, Pinocchio is only of interest to VERY young children. Otherwise, do not waste your money. If you want a good family film, rent Amblimation's 'Balto' instead.
ONE OF THE ALL TIME GREATS NEEDS AN UPGRADED EDITION!.......2007-03-13
This is one of Disney's finest animated features and it has not had a complete restoration done!! Mind boggling! The print here looks like it is direct from VHS. I hope there is a 2 disc Platinum edition coming soon?
My Favorite Classic Disney from Years Past.......2007-02-22
This movie is a beautifully-made masterpiece that, very unfortunately, seems to be overlooked sometimes because of other old Disney movies that were made around that time (like Snow White). However, of all the "old" Disney movies (made before the era of Eisner), this is the one that most hits the mark for me. Not only is it an interesting story with involving characters, but the overlooked soundtrack is also quite wonderful. "Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee" is an old favorite of mine, and not to mention "Little Wooden Head" is a catchy little tune. This is my favorite of the oldies-but-goodies because not only does it completely hit the mark, but it doesn't rely on the old cliche of "princess captured by evil stepmother and then saved later on by a nameless Prince Charming who has no personality whatsoever". Though some of those movies are good, like Snow White, some of them are dull like Cinderella, and this movie doesn't make you make that choice.
Now I haven't always been a fan of this movie; this is more of a "grown-up" movie than many of the others that were made around that time. This is a darker tale than the likes of Snow White, and a more intense and involving one than movies like Cinderella. It also doesn't follow the oft-degraded Disney Formula, because there's no real cookie-cutter "bad guy". And since there's no real cookie-cutter bad guy, it makes it all the more interesting to see four or five villains make their entrances and exits, more like a real-life fairy tale than others. None of the villains "gets what he deserves", like in most Disney movies where they fall to their deaths.
That isn't to say that the other Disney movies aren't good. That is, however, to say that this Disney movie was ahead of its time in its innovations in realistic story developments. Granted, the story itself isn't that realistic, but we all know the story, and can take it for granted. And I'm not saying that the film is COMPLETELY underrated either. Just about everybody's heard the song "When You Wish Upon A Star", and it truly is a wonderfully sweet tune.
Speaking of which, Jiminy Cricket is a masterpiece of a character if there ever was one. And there are plenty of other great characters in this movie too: the old puppet master, Geppetto, who just wants a real boy; Cleo and Figaro, the domesticated fish and jealous cat; and of course many great villains, including Honest John, Stromboli, Lampwick, and of course Monstro, most of whom are also used for on-the-spot comic relief. But despite the comic relief, there are definitely some scenes that are too scary for the youngsters, including quite a few edgy scenes including the mad old puppeteer Stromboli. However, it's not ALL dark, which is good. There are some very fun, and some laugh-out-loud funny, scenes, both for the youngsters and for the adults.
Overall, this truly is a great movie for anybody, but especially for those who have ever been through the struggle of being a real boy. :)

Based on the bestseller by Mitch Albom (Tuesdays With Morrie), The Five People You Meet in Heaven takes up where It's A Wonderful Life left off. In the Capra classic, George Bailey gets a vision of life without him. In this Hallmark Hall of Fame production, Eddie (Jon Voight), an amusement park maintenance man and war veteran, ends up in Heaven after an accident takes his life. There he meets five people from his past: the Blue Man (Jeff Richards), the Captain (Michael Imperioli), Marguerite (Dagmara Dominczyk), Ruby (Ellen Burstyn), and Tala (Nicaela and Shelbie Weigel). Each shows him how he impacted their life or they his--and not always for the better. (In these flashbacks, Callahan Brebner and Steven Grayhm play the young Eddie.) The point may seem simplistic--everyone is connected--but The Five People You Meet in Heaven finds a unique and engaging way to make it. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Moving movie.......2007-07-05
I throughly enjoyed this movie its very moving and gives you a new perspective on heaven. I highly recommend this movie you will love it.
An Amazing movie.......2007-06-24
I thought this was such a beautiful film about life, love, and loss. It really made me cry, especially the part where Eddie sees his wife again and she says "Life has to end, Eddie. Love doesn't." And that even in heaven she still loved him and she still felt his love for her. Eddie is a old man who fixes amusment park rides. he feels his life is worthless. until he dies and finds out in heaven through meeting five different people who each had an inpact upon his life that his life was meaningful and that where he was in life was where he was supposed to be all long. it shows that even if you aren't famous, gorgeous, or rich your life is still worth something and each life is important and that the whole human race is conncected. As the Blue Man says: "Strangers are family we have yet to come to know." I mean, it's just such a beautiful movie and story and so powerful and timeless and I think it will touch viewers and readers of all ages. It's spiritual, meaningful, and gorgeous. I think probably every human being thinks that his or her life was worthless just because they weren't famous celebrities or something. But the truth is that every life is worth something, just like the old man Eddie did. He had touched so many lives and he never knew that until he died.
heavenly.......2007-05-31
interesting, thought provoking, less saccharine than I would have presumed and delightfully diverse in characterisation. It is about chance, about ho wlives are so inextricably entwined that we can have life changing events happen to other people due to our actions yet we can and do never know about them. It's a book about maturity, yes of life and death, but also about finding meaning and reason for being human at all. And if it's not to your taste it's still a nice visual few hours anyway.
Anything New?.......2007-05-21
Heaven Schmeaven. It's all the same. The story begins with the death of eighty three year old Eddie "Maintenance," when an amusement park ride goes wrong. From the start of the tale, Eddie's character is rather mysterious; the reader only learns that he is a hardworking, modest man, who dearly loves his wife, Marguerite, and thinks his job as "the ride man" at Ruby Pier is worthless. The seemingly ordinary story suddenly takes a sharp turn into a poor attempt to fantasy writing. Eddie magically flies through multiple color-changing skies- or supposedly, he is on his way to heaven. His well-guarded character then begins to reveal itself as he gains insight of his life in a journey through heaven. He learns how his actions affect and alter many other lives, just as the five people he meets affected his...
Sound familiar? First off, the whole flying ordeal is unreal. Yes, it is dealing with heaven, and heaven is considered a supernatural place where anything can happen, but come on. The events that occur in this novel are too far-fetched and unrealistic to be mere coincidences or an illustration of how our lives are connected. This leads me to another shortcoming. The underlying message of the novel is overused. Unoriginal. Trite. The lesson taught by this fable deals with the common idea that we are all connected in some way. All our actions affect others. They alter, set up, or have indirect influences upon other lives. Albom might as well transcribe the storylines of the movie "Crash" or the television show "Six Degrees," both of which revolve around the same theme, and call it The Five People You Meet in Heaven. Overall, the novel is just too predictable.
The unrealistic nature of the novel makes it seem like Albom worked too hard to make his point. For example, the first person Eddie meets in heaven is the Blue Man. The Blue Man is a man (obviously) who also worked at Ruby Pier in the freak shows for his blue skin. His relation to Eddie's life is revealed through a story about a little boy who threw a ball too far across the street. The little boy and his brother run across the street to get it. They meet an incredibly obese woman and an incredibly hairy man from the freak show. They run away, scared. Now apparently, according to Blue Man, the little boy did not see a car that was coming his way. The man behind the wheel slams on the brakes and "somehow regains control," just like that. The car rolls on, but... Oh no! The adrenaline rush from the near-tragedy makes the man feel so dizzy that his "head drops momentarily" but somehow within that moment, he collides into a parked truck. He's bleeding, he's dizzy, and then he has a heart attack. He dies. Then Albom has Blue Man end his story by calling Eddie "little boy," revealing the unpredictable and unforeseen truth that Eddie was the little boy! Wow, didn't see that coming!
First, the chain of events is very unlikely. Second, the chain of events is very unsurprising. What's expected of a novel with an overplayed underlying message? The story tries too hard to evoke emotions or "pull at the heartstrings," and to elicit the notion that we are all connected to the point that it seems unreal. The trite idea is boring, and makes the storyline way too predictable.
--H. Choi

Product Description
The Griswolds have planned all year for a great summer vacation. From their suburban Chicago home, across America, to the wonders of Wally World fun park in California, every step of the way has been carefully plotted. Except a few hundred hysterical exceptions.
National Lampoon's Vacation is a sublimely goofy comedy, thanks largely to Chevy Chase in his signature role of Clark Griswold. The inept but sincere Clark takes misfortune in stride. So what if they lose all their money when their new car gets wrecked. And it's not too bad when Cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid) deposits sour Aunt Edna (Imogene Coca) in their back seat for a lift to Phoenix. But what really keeps Clark's eyes on the road is a flirtation with a mysterious blonde (Christie Brinkley) in a red Ferrari.
For those along on the ride, National Lampoon's Vacation, called "fast, funny satire" by The New York Times' Janet Maslin, is a jolly jaunt.
Running Time: 98 min.

Vacation paved the way for the John Hughes movie dynasty of the 1980s. Written by Hughes (who would go on to write, direct, and/or produce The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Uncle Buck, Home Alone, and so on) and directed by Harold Ramis (Caddyshack, Groundhog Day, Stuart Saves His Family), the first Vacation movie introduces us to the all-American Griswold family: father Clark (Chevy Chase), mother Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo), son Rusty (future Hughes staple Anthony Michael Hall), and daughter Audrey (Dana Barron). They all pile into the car for a cross-country road trip to Walley World, stopping along the way to view the world's biggest ball of twine. John Candy, Imogene Coca, and Randy Quaid (as yokel Cousin Eddie) pop up along the way. The movie was a big hit, and was followed by several sequels--National Lampoon's European Vacation, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, and National Lampoon's Vegas Vacation--but this one is still probably the freshest and funniest of the bunch. --Jim Emerson

Chevy Chase Steals the Show.......2007-07-05
This is your average American family a mom, a dad, and two kids. You really see a lot of great acting in this movie you have three very good performances you have Chevy Chase who is the parent, Anthony Michael Hall who is the teenage son, and you have Christie Brinkley the girl who drives the red Ferrari. You can't go wrong with this movie it will make you laugh and pee your pants simultaneously. It isn't a hard to find movie you can buy it on Amazon, movie stores, or you can be cheap like me I bought it on VHS at a yard sale for one dollar, brand new (thrift stores are good too).
Early John Hughes hasn't aged well........2007-02-27
"Vacation" was a film that needed to be made for all of us Americans. That having been said, it's essentially a belabored one-joke movie. And suffering through Chevy Chase only gets more annoying with each subsequent episode. What may have seemed hilarious in 1983 (his yelling out the F word repeatedly), doesn't quite have the same impact 25 years later. Hughes would use the same joke in a similar, much funnier movie "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles."
The real star of the film is Anthony Michael Hall. He outshines Chevy Chase in each of their shared scenes and his delivery is perfect. It is interesting to watch him before his career exploded in the next 2-3 years.
He owes us! You're GD right he owes us!!!.......2006-08-23
Review Note: This review is based on the VHS tape.
Classic comedy, Chevy Chase style. This was and is to this day, a comedy classic. One of the funniest! My brother and I, and numerous friends still quote off lines from this movie, on a regular basis.
Highly recommended!

Nothing Special about Special Edition.......2006-08-22
(This is a review of the DVD itself, not the movie.)
Not sure why they decided to release a "special edition." Really the only thing extra is the commentary, which is too busy because they have at least 4 or 5 people making comments. Not nearly as good as Chevy Chase by himself on the "European Vacation" DVD. Also, the video is a bit jumpy and seems low-quality, as if it were transferred from VHS. Sound is excellent however.
Worth it just for the movie itself, but really there's not too much extra.
One of the best!!.......2006-08-11
Hands down, one of the best comedies of the 80's. Chevy was at his best and director Harold Ramis was on a role. (Caddyshack and Stripes.)
Many cuts and versions are out there but the truest I've seen, so far, is the anniversary edition. It's in widescreen (I've heard matted/cropped,not sure, but??), nice 5.1 mix, some decent special features but where are all those deleted scenes and the alternate ending?
Plus, a big [..] I have. "I'm so exited" was the song played when Christie Brinkley pulls along side Chevy(Clark Griswald) in the original. Why, still is "Little boy sweet" a song also by the Pointer Sisters used instead?? Both songs were used in the movie. The latter in the truckstop sceen where Chevy eats the pissed on sandwhich.
Is the copyright on that song that expensive to get it??
Dunno. Great movie. Lotta fun.
Best DVD of it yet. Agreed??

This movie is hilarious, yet has some very touching parts. I remember it from when I was a kid. I loved it then and I love it now.

Not the best movie for my 3 year old.......2006-11-11
This was a movie my older kids loved as kids. Now 10 years later, I realized how crazy this movie is.. Maybe I will break it back out when she is 8 or 9..haha
"Are We There Yet" gets $18 million, but THIS BOMBS???.......2005-02-05
They're essentially the same movie, only "Bebe's Kids" is actually funny. Faizon Love's voice, as Robin Harris, is spot-on (a bit eerie, in fact), and the story is told part cartoony / part naturally. From Bruce Smith, the creator of Disney's "The Proud Family", it contains a few rap-music numbers ("He Ain't Havin' It" being the best) that threaten to derail the story, but they're brief enough to ignore.
The transfer is typical Paramount non-remastered conversion from film stock, but it's finally in widescreen (I even caught a joke that's missing from the fullscreen tape) and has good sound. You'll need that to catch the mass of infectiously quotable lines aplenty.
"Test tube baby."

As an engineer and Disney fan, I had geat fun and learning!.......2007-04-21
Really the only thing that I miss is not been able to share it with many of my Spanish-speaking friends and family members because it lacks audio in other languages or subtitles. Otherwise, I fell more inclined to keep returning to the Happiest Place on Earth.
FANTASTIC!!!.......2007-01-27
This is a MUST for Disney fans. Besides showing images from rides that are not on Disney DVDs, they present much information about the construction of the parks and the backstage of WDW. The DVD presents everything in a chronological order, separated according to the theme parks and it includes the uptodate information, like the Expedition Everest ride.
It's a pity not having subtitles. But I really recommend it.
Awesome Disney Info........2007-01-09
Bought this as a xmas gift for my husband and kids. After a recent trip to Disney, this was an amazing video to watch. I have passed it along to friends to see as well since the information was exceptional. I would recommend it to anyone who has been to Disney as well as to those who have not been.
Inexpensive Backstage Tour.......2006-10-11
I rated this only four stars because the audio track on my DVD was out of sync with the video. It appears that the film to DVD transfer didn't compensate for the film audio being several frames ahead of the images.
On the other hand I now have images of the Utilidors. I managed to take two backstage tours of Walt Disney World during the 1990's. The Keys to the Kingdom tour and the three-park Backstage Magic tour were expensive and took up an entire day--but I thought them worth the trouble and expense. It took me three years to book the Backstage Magic tour, and for several good reasons I didn't get to take home photographs of the backstage areas such as the Utilidors. Modern Marvels provided me video images to keep these vital infrastructure of Walt's utopian village fresh in my mind.
I learned about the new Expedition Everest ride, and how the Tree of Life was grown by the Imagineers. I love the Monorail system and the Contemporary Resort--featured! This DVD lets me tour Walt Disney World and its secrets in the comfort of my home, without flying cross-country and putting up with crowds. It isn't "the real thing," but this DVD allows me to scratch my Walt Disney World itch until I get the time and a couple of thousand dollars to return to Orlando.
great.......2006-09-12
this show was like so amazing im 15 not 13 or anything but it was really good and interesting and i never like shows like this but the episode on disney world toatlally got my attention! im probably gonna buy it

A matinee programmer with lofty ambitions, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms is best appreciated as a vintage showcase for the stop-motion animation of special-effects legend Ray Harryhausen. The hoary plot follows the cold-war formula that dominated science fiction movies of the 1950s: After an atomic bomb test in the northern polar ice cap, a gigantic dinosaur--the fictional "Rhedosaurus"--is awakened from eons of dormancy, plots an undersea course for the Eastern seaboard, and proceeds to wreak havoc on New York City, culminating in a showdown with military marksmen at the Coney Island amusement park. Stock footage and tissue-thin drama make this a by-the-numbers monster flick, further hampered by Eugene Lourie's lackluster direction and a wooden B-movie cast. And yet, Harryhausen's first independent effort retains its atomic-age fascination: Beast marked yet another technical milestone for Harryhausen's impeccable techniques, and its perpetual status as a sci-fi classic is duly acknowledged in the DVD bonus features, including a retrospective featurette and a latter-day reunion of Harryhausen and longtime friend Ray Bradbury, whose short story "The Fog Horn" served as this film's inspiration. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Near the Arctic Circle, an atomic bomb is detonated. This fearsome experiment disturbs the sleep of a giant rhedosaurus encased in ice for more than 100-million years and sends it southward on a destructive, deadly rampage. The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms is a film of firsts. It spawned a new era of atomic-age creature features. It was the first screen adaptation of a work by fantasy fiction titan Ray Bradbury. And it marked the first time Ray Harryhausen had control over special effects. He came up with a fantastic creature (constructed at full scale, all 50 tons of it) that swims down from the north to run amok through New York City before being conquered in a spectacular Coney Island roller coaster finale. Take a classic ride. Unleash The Beast. Year: 1953
DVD Features:
Documentaries:Two commemorative 50th anniversary documentaries - The Rhedosaurus and the Roller Coaster: Making the Beast; Harryhausen & Bradbury: An Unfathomable Friendship
Production Notes
Theatrical Trailer:Giant monsters trailer gallery featurnig this film, The Black Scorpion, Clash of the Titans and The Valley of Gwangi

Adult Popcorn.......2007-07-06
This movie is what I call "Adult Popcorn." That doesn't mean you have to be one, but it helps.
When you are asked what movie you want to rent or buy, try this one.
Corny yes. Not great special affects. This is Jurasic Park 50 years before that movie was released. Old yes and fun to. Don't forget the popcorn.
The very latest models for 1953.......2007-06-28
It's hard to realize why this early stop-motion animation "beast on the loose" film is so warmly remembered until you actually see it, since it doesn't seem from its description like it should be that special. Its plot of a monster released by atomic radiation attacking a city has been repeated again and again, and owes much to both the 1933 KING KONG and the 1925 THE LOST WORLD (as Ray Bradbury and Ray Harryhausen, who respectively wrote its original story and created its effects, cheerfully admit in the accompaying feature). But in many ways this set the standard for the films of this sort that dominated the sci-fi films of the 50s, and the beast itself is really a marvel. Whereas King Kong was childlike, given to charming bits of curiosity and childish tantrums of rage, and the later (much inferior) Godzilla simply incarnated pure chaos, the Beast here has become much beloved over the decades because it is so ornery. It attacks fishing trawlers, lighthouses, diving bells and the docks of Manhattan for no good reason other than that it's particularly grumpy and ill-tempered, which makes it all the more adorable. (It even looks like a cross between a pit bull and a gila monster.)
As with most 1950s monster films, the stuff that comes in-between the Beast's rampages is pretty forgettable, although the Swiss Paul Hubschmid (here called Paul Christian) is a pretty unusual choice as the hero, and Paula Raymond, as the fretful assistant to a paleontology professor, is for some reason given a hilarious array of the very latest in New Look fashions in every scene she's in. Probably the film's producers figured if they couldn't give us the animated Harryhausen model of the rhedosaurus they'd have to give us something, so there she is sporting others sorts of the very latest models.
Great 50s Classic.......2007-03-10
I remember watching this as a kid on MONA LISA Monster Theatre.Still a great 50s SCI-FI Flick. Harry Harryhausen is the best at his creature animations. This movie ia a must for all SCI-FI fans.
ONE OF RAY'S FINEST CLASSIC MONSTER ON THE LOOSE!.......2007-03-08
This is the one that set off a surge of giant monsters trampling through our cities in the 50's. I know The Lost World and King Kong were first, but there was a lull for quite some time before this Harryhausen classic set the fifties on fire! The DVD has a very nice transfer and some extra material. If you like old monster movies this one is well worth owning. It is a Stop Motion Masterpiece!
Nice Transfer Of An Early 'Creature Feature'.......2007-02-14
It would be a mistake to write off "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms" as being too cliché; for to do so would be to forget that most of the clichés that are in the movie originated with this movie. What you have with this movie is undoubtedly one of many movies which are put into the creature feature category. It also uses the Godzilla like premise of an ancient monster being reawakened due to nuclear testing. Throw in the hero who isn't believed by his colleagues, and the woman scientist who is the only one who listens to him, and you have the elements of more 50's science fiction movies than I care to count.
The storyline is simple, atomic testing releases a Rhedosaurus from the arctic ice. When two observers are measuring the results of the test, one is killed while the other, Professor Tom Nesbitt, is injured but manages to survive. His story is attributed to stress and he is shipped back to New York for treatment. As he recovers, stories begin to appear about sea monsters which convince him that what he remembers is true. He gets the aid from Professor Thurgood Elson and his assistant Lee Hunter. Together they finally convince the armed forces, but not until it is too late and the beast has made it too New York City. Panic ensues as the beast destroys sections of the city until the final climactic scene at the Coney Island Rollercoaster.
This was a very low budget movie, costing around $210,000 to make. Not surprisingly it doesn't have any big stars, although you may recognize some character actors from other roles. Paul Hubschmid plays Professor Nesbitt, and Paula Raymond plays Lee Hunter. Two names which do stand out are those of Ray Harryhausen who was responsible for the animation, and Ray Bradbury who wrote the short story "The Fog Horn", on which this film is somewhat based. The film was directed by Eugène Lourié.
Make no mistake, this is not a great film, but it is fun and it has an undeniable place in the history of science fiction and the movies. It was nominated in 2004 for the Retro Hugo for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form for pieces which debuted in the year 1953. The film is just 79 minutes long, and yet it probably could have been shortened a bit as it does drag at times. The pace does pick up at the end as they fight the beast in the streets of New York.
The transfer of the movie for the most part looks very good. The special features are decent, with a couple of short documentaries. The first is "The Rhedosaurus and the Roller Coaster: Making the Beast" which is just a short feature about the movie. The second is "Harryhausen & Bradbury" which features the two men talking about their long friendship and their love of dinosaurs. There are also four trailers, including one for his movie, and then ones for "The Black Scorpion", The Valley of Gwangi", and "Clash of the Titans".

Known to Stateside moviegoers as Godzilla on Monster Island, this slight but fun 1972 entry in the Godzilla franchise pits the King of the Monsters and four-legged cohort Angilas against aliens bent on world domination, as well as their old nemesis, the space dragon King Ghidorah, and a new creature, the birdlike cyborg Gigan. Diehard G-fans may be disappointed by the film's kid-friendly tone (a shift in direction signaled several years earlier by Godzilla's Revenge) and its overreliance on stock footage from other Godzilla films to depict the monsters' orgy of destruction, as well as an unfortunate decision to make Godzilla "talk"; however, children (Gigan's real audience) will undoubtedly enjoy the frantic action. Parents should know that there are two brief moments of blood-letting (Godzilla and Angilas both suffer wounds from a buzzsaw that juts from Gigan's torso), but otherwise, the film is free of objectionable material. --Paul Gaita

Bored? In need of a cheesy B-flick? Godzilla vs Gigan is for you!.......2007-03-07
I am sick, so I decided to get a Big G movie. My friend and I love old cheesy movies, especially Godzillas. I got G vs Gigan and G: Final Wars (Which I am also righting a review about). G vs Gigan didn't disappoint me. I laughed and laughed over the cheesy fight scenes and the pathetic antics of the moronic Japenese actors. The aliens in this Godzilla are actually (of course) cockroaches from outer space! (Seriously. I kid you not.) I used the English dub for a short while but then simply opted for the Japanese voiceovers and English subtitles. The English dub was a collection of fifty year old voice actors. (Sad). But, now to what really matters: the monsters. There are four main ones in this movie, and a collection of small appearances. Godzilla (of course) is the hero, and then there's his sidekick, Anguiras. The little armodillo gets smacked around and beaten up, and is really no help. The villians are Gigan, a cyborg razor blade, and King Ghidorah. Gigan looks pretty cool, but King Ghidorah is done very poorly (I don't mind). At the beggining of the movie, Godzilla stomps out. I though he looked really pathetic until he roared. That trademark roar changed everything, and suddenly he was awesomeness itself. Anguirus is the best done monster. He looks pretty nice. There are several battle sequences, all cheesy the way I like it. In one scene where Gigan and King Ghidorah rampage through Tokyo (for the millioth time), Gigan actually stomps past a building with two dolls inside. Little Kelly Dolls with rosy cheeks! Little shrimps! Sad, but hilarious. So, all in all, you get what you expect. GET IT if you like Godzilla or cheesy B-flicks. DON'T GET IT if you dislike Godzilla, cheesy B-flicks, or girly Japanese 70s actors (and a talking Godzilla.) Good stuff, I say.
4 Stars for Ghidorah fans only.......2006-04-05
I was going to rate this three stars but I rated it four stars becaue I am a King Ghidorah fan (he is my 2nd favorite Kaiju, slightly behind Rodan)
It's still good but not as good as most other G-films. Gigan is a decent opponent but there was a lot of stock footage. Seeing stock footage badly used in a movie is weird. Normally, movies don't have stock footage. Anyway, G fights Gigan a lot and King Ghidorah helps gigan at times. anguirus tries to help G but ends up getting beaten up through most of the fight scene. The monster/ttack fight scene, from where King Ghidorah and Gigan attack Tokyo onwards, is about 40 minutes long. It would have been better if the original footage were set during the day (because stock footage was set during the day). One thing that would have made this movie much better is if Rodan had been in it instead of Anguirus.
Gigan is one of the Coolest Godzilla Foes Yet!.......2005-10-21
Gigan is a cool Godzilla villain and proves to make a great team with King Ghidorah. They could have beat Godzilla if Godzilla didn't have any help from Anguirus. The reason for four stars is becauase Godzilla and Anguirus talk! I do not like the Showa series in the slightest. My favorite is the Millinium series I think. Anyway, it's a descent Godzilla movie. I like it.

.......2005-08-22
Okay, I admit that Godzilla vs Gigan is one of the corney Godzilla movies of the 70s but it isn't nearly as bad as Godzilla vs Hedorah. Okay, let's see: We have a Team Battle Between four of some of the most famous kaiju, an alien invasion plot, explosions, and a bunch of fighting that doesn't seem to get old. Mix it up and you get a great Sci-Fi flick! Okay, it's not the best Sci-Fi movie but it is one of the best Showa Godzilla movies. I keep watching it and it never seems to get old. Many other movies like Star Wars original trilogy, Lord of the Rings, A.V.P, and a lot of other stuff, I just don't find appealing when I watch it for the second time. But Godzilla vs Gigan never gets old! It has King Ghidorah, my third favorite kaiju, Angilas, my favorite Godzilla ally, Gigan, now a very popular favorite of mine, and of course Godzilla the King of Monsters. This is just a really good movie for soemone who's in the mood to have fun! Buy it, you can keep watching it a bunch of times and it just never expires!

Taking full advantage of the DVD format, this installment of the Roller Coaster Thrills series offers viewers a choice of two camera angles for each of the 20 rides captured on this disc. Anticipate the fear of that initial heart-stopping plunge with a first-person perspective, or face backward and watch the reactions of the riders--either way, it's a great ride. The virtual tour across U.S. theme parks includes old-fashioned woodies, dual-track looping coasters, and colossal steel mega-coasters with 300-foot drops. Many of the featured coasters were built in 1999 and show off the latest advances in roller coaster engineering; in fact, one launched coaster has apparently garnered interest from NASA engineers for the speed of its propulsion (0 to 60 mph in under 3 seconds). The disc is also packed with special features: amusement park histories, interviews with roller coaster designers, behind-the-scenes insights from director Ned Rodgers and director of photography Dave Cutler, plus Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound, and bonus footage of the first combination roller coaster and water ride. --Larisa Lomacky Moore

Really Thrilling.......2006-07-28
This is a great dvd from beginning to end. My 16 year old special needs daughter watches it over and over again. I usually get tired of watching the same dvd over and over but this one is an exception. I give this dvd 2 thumbs up.
Buck from Downunda.......2006-06-01
Only one star, because it's not possible to give a 1/2 star.
This was a great disappointment to me. Whatever possessed the producers to release this DVD as it is, is beyond me.
Yes it goes into detail about:
Where the rides are.
The ride: length; height; speed; designers etc. but fails to deliver what I expected, which was a 1st person perspective.
What you get, at a conservative ratio estimate is:
5% 1st person view (your view as the rider)
40% 2nd person view (your face as you are on the ride)
55% 3rd person view (the ride viewed from all different angles)
If the producers of this DVD are trying to promote the rides AND this DVD, then I think they need to give you the three options above for the whole ride i.e. 100% of all 3 views from a selectable menu, as per...
1st person view would let you know exactly what to expect on the ride. It would also give those unfortunate enough not to be able to actually get on these rides a chance to "ride the rollercoaster" at home.
2nd person view would give you the impression that there is a hold-up in progress when everyone puts their arms in the air...seriously though it would let you see the expressions on the faces of the people on the ride like the "horror look" as they face that first drop. It could also give you a "rear view" look of the ride as well.
3rd person view would give you an overall appreciation of the ride viewed from all different angles and the construction that went into it.
Giving you the option of 3 different viewing angles would make this a far better product and a worthy addition to any DVD collection.....something for the producers of this type of product to think about.
Pretty good - very exciting :-().......2006-03-27
I haven't seen many roller coaster dvds, but I can imagine this rates high above some others. It goes into a fair bit of detail about the particular coaster you are seeing on the screen. It will tell you the designers, the duration, the speed and the highest heights of it. They have some pretty scary rides let me tell you, but they look like so much fun.
The reason I dropped a star for the review is for the 'silly screaming' of all the girls. It's annoying after awhile. The second reason I dropped a star, is because it's quite annoying when they show you what it's like to be on the coaster via set cameras (so you get a really good feel about what fun it would be) and the next thing you know, they are showing it at another angle. I like coaster films where the camera is on the coaster and you watch it like you are riding the ride. I don't like tidbits of such angles only to have them pan away to the external shot so you lose that great feel. Despite this slight annoyance, if you are a fan of coasters like I am; you'll really apreciate this high quality production.

Description
Before there was Disneyland, there was Coney Island. By the turn of the century, this tiny piece of New York real estate was internationally famous. On summer Sundays, three great pleasure domes--Steeplechase, Luna Park and Dreamland--competed for the patronage of a half-million people. By day it was the world's most amazing amusement park, by night, an electric "Eden".

Coney Island, my home town!.......2007-06-26
For anyone to understand what Coney Island means to people (especially those with a direct connection to the place), they'd have to see this documentary. The legendary amusement parks and their eventual demise is a compelling story of the rise and fall of a universal icon.
In this, the first of Ric Burns' American Experience documentary films, the dynamic of this unique place is captured so well, I can barely watch it without tears emerging uncontrollably from my eyes.
A must see for anyone interested in New York City, the rise of recreation and amusement in America for the new working class with a day off, amusement parks; and most of all Coney Island itself.
awsome documentary , except ! .......2007-01-04
i would have given this documentary 5 stars except they showed the murder of a poor defenseless elephant. this was something ric burns could have left out, i found it somewhat disturbing. the people who ordered the murder and the one filming should have been killed themselves. anyway the rest of the film is nothing less then an amazing documentary about coney island from the start to the run down coney island of today.
the REAL coney island!.......2006-11-06
this is a fascinating documentary about coney island spectacles before the dawn of the PC era. a brilliant capture of the evolution of one of new york's most intriguing historical landmarks, featuring everything from the advent of the baby incubator, to a village of little people, to the electrocution of a runaway elepahant. my boyfriend and i went to coney island again after seeing it, and it totally enhanced the experience--a must-see for every new yorker, or new york enthusiast.
Superb Atmospheric Film.......2006-08-21
There are nights when I have watched this film twice or three times in a row. Wonderful silent film and still photographs accompanied by Eli Wallach's narration and a haunting score. Return to the days when Coney Island was the latest thing in American amusement. There are no other words besides "absolutely stunning."
Great Watching.......2006-08-21
I highly recommend this installment of American Experience. Between the archive footage, celebrity voice overs and atmospheric sound track it really conveys a sense of what New York life was like at the turn of the century.

Third time is not quite the charm for Eddie Murphy's Axel Foley when he heads for L.A. once again to avenge a friend's murder. This time he's off to the Disneyesque WonderWorld, apparently the most hazardous theme park in America despite an army of shady security agents. John Landis directed Murphy in his first film hit, Trading Places, and would seem a good match for this mix of action and comedy, but his sense of fun only emerges in a few scenes (chubby mechanics do a gymnastic Blues Brothers number to a Diana Ross tune) and his action direction is sloppy and shockingly violent. It seems wrong for the comic tone, and Murphy should have his foul mouth washed out with soap. On the plus side, Bronson Pinchot returns as Serge and all but upstages Murphy in two brief but hilarious scenes. --Sean Axmaker

Beverly Hills Cop III.......2007-02-02
Beverly Hills Cop III~ Eddie Murphy is not a terrible movie. Then again if you compare this sequel to the two first movies then one must say that it is a disappointment. Eddie Murphy is not nearly as funny as in the first two movies and the script is half lame as if they had run out of ideas. The plot is paper thin, and a total hoot compared to the two previous movies. Man, I was really looking forward to watching this movie after having seen the two other movies. This is a mediocre movie at best and gets the 2 stars that it deserves. Not recommended.
With a film title like this one, I expected quite alot and was disappointed big time.......2007-01-03
"Are you going to work with Eddie Murphy again?" Asked to John Landis by someone at the 1992 Fangoria Convention. "I hope not," Landis replied. Now keep in mind this was in reference to them working together in "Coming to America," not this film. I have no idea why they teamed up together again, because the evidence from this film shows they must have really disliked one another even more. Look at this film and then look at "Trading Places," their first collaboration and you can begin to see the differences. I thought with this third "Beverly Hills Cop," Landis was going to support the story adaquately, then for the action scenes show his wild spirit (ala the ending sequences of "Animal House," "American Werewolf," and "Blues Brothers"), and for the comedy, roll two to three cameras and let Eddie play with each scene. If Landis could give Michael Jackson room to do what he wanted in the "Black or White" video, why not let Eddie do what he does best instead of forcing his character and us the audience through a bunch of painfully unfunny scenes, terrible acting, and a tv movie look? Sure it looks better on dvd than it did in the theatres, but that is still no excuse for betraying the core of this series. If it had tried to do something different and been successful, this film would be liked much more. The reason why it is so hated is because the film has no pulse or soul--something I never thought possible for John Landis or Eddie Murphy.
Both men are capable of great things but lord have mercy on this film and give everyone their two hours back.
Classic Eddie Murphy.......2006-06-27
This movie is not as good as the first three movies, probably because it follows a bit of the same formula from the first two. Even so, it is a good movie. Rosewood and Serge rejoin Foley as all crimes in Detroit seem to lead to Southern California. Detective Taggert is replaced, which is a shame since his replacement does not seem to have the same chemistry the three main characters had in the first movie. Even so, it is definitely worth owning if you enjoyed the first two in the series.
BAD.......2005-07-21
Beverly Hills Cop III is the last installment in an awesome trilogy where nonstop laughter and action occurs. The first 2 are classics and the original is especially a definite must see.
But, this one isn't at all as good as the first two. But....
THe movie is fairly descent with some ok action and funny moments but there aren't enough funny moments and the action is cheesy. Plus the whole movie basically takes place in a theme park. Yeah, a place like Disneyland called Wonderworld. So, I was sitting down, listening to some stupid theme song go off every second. I was about to rip my hair out. I mean, it was annoying. Also, R rated movies shouldn't take place in a theme park! It just seemed too babyish. On top of it, it's just such a dissapointment to me because the first 2 were classic and this one was a horrible end to the trilogy. If you watch this without watching the first 2, you'll like it better than me. And for those of you giving it 4 or 5 stars, come on! THe Wonderworld setting alone screwed it over!
Watch the first 2 and act like this doesn't even exist because even though it isn't the worst movie ever, it is a horrid end to the trilogy and an affront to the first two.
Not bad, but doesn't live up to the other two movies.......2005-07-04
BHC 3 is a pretty good movie, it's just that this movie doesn't fit how the others were made. First, the movie is about Axel Foley back to Beverly Hills to investigate the murder of his boss Inspector Todd. Its ends up making him go to an amusement park Wonderworld (Paramounts Great America) to find the killers. When I watched it for the first time, I thought it was decent. The stunts like the jumping around the ferris wheel were cool. I like how the fact they used rides at parks that are popular to do with the scenes like the rendition of the Earthquake ride at the Universal Studios and the Kindom of the Dinosaurs at Knotts Berry Farm. Rosewood is back, but that's it.
Some of the things that made this movie disappointing was the use of an amusement park for a R rated film. Most likely if amusement parks are associated, it would be a family film. This type of setting does not appeal to the fans of previous BHC's. the plot was mediocre, not any real good suspense. The annoying aspect was the stupid music in the background of Wonder World, if music were to play at a real theme park everyone would be very mad.
Plus the most important of all, the absence of Taggart (John Aston) and Bogomil (Ronny Cox). I think Part 2 was the best because Taggart and Rosewood teamed up with Foley to solve the cases. Thats what made the series great. The chemistry of the laughs and adventures were what made the previous films funny. This film is so-so on the comedy. Axel Floey however doesn't do the funny ab-lib like in the other ones.
This is a great film to add to your collection of BHC movies, but it may not be your favorite, due to absences in characters.
