A mixed bag as variations on A Christmas Carol go, this 1970 British musical tells the usual story of Scrooge (Albert Finney) and his spirits on Christmas Eve, although the whole thing is set to music by Leslie Bricusse. Except for Finney's feisty and involved performance, however, there isn't much to recommend this. The songs, which absorb so much of the evolving story line and emotions, are not all that good. Plenty of support, however, from the likes of Roy Kinnear (Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory) and Dame Edith Evans (Tom Jones), the handsome production is directed by veteran Ronald Neame (The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie). --Tom Keogh

Favorite Christmas movie.......2007-05-15
This is my favorite movie about the Charles Dickens classic story: "A Christmas Carol".
I will only watch this one and no other.
One of my all time favorite Christmas videos.......2007-05-07
First be aware that this is a musical production of the famous Scrooge story. If musicals turn you off, then this is probably not for you. But for those of us who enjoy a good musical, sit back and enjoy.
The songs are catchy, the characters well acted, and the "ghosts" well done. A "must see" for your Christmas collection.
The Best Christmas DVD Ever.......2007-05-02
My family and I love this DVD. We watched it when I was a child, and I was thrilled to find it on DVD as an adult. It is a musical--and very well done. The tunes stay in your head all year. Albert Finney is amazing!
There is no Humbug about this movie.......2007-03-09
When it comes to Charles Dickens `A Christmas Carol' I personally loath musicals . To me, they take away from the story. When I saw `Scrooge' I was 12 years old. It was Christmas Eve and decided to sit through it. Back when I was a kid there was no cable TV. We were limited as to how many channels we got. Needless to say, from the second I saw the opening credits, I was hooked on the movie. It became a tradition. I remember watching it one Christmas and how disappointed I was that they cut out a huge scene of Scrooge in Hell. I could not believe how they could do such a thing. When I saw that this movie was available on DVD in wide screen and surround sound, I immediately ordered my copy from Amazon. To me, this movie brings back so many great movies. I would not hesitate to recommend the movie to anyone.
One of our favorite Christmas traditions.......2007-03-04
Christmas wouldn't be Christmas for us without this movie. In my opinion, there is no finer version of this Dickens classic. I saw this movie when it was a first run film in theaters and loved it then. Our family has watched it every Christmas since the first video was released. (We first owned the soundtrack on an LP album!) Now our entire extended family views it every Christmas. I can't recommend it enough. I'd give it more stars if I could. It warms the heart and soul, and the music, despite what the critics said when it was released, is beautiful and memorable, and it has extremely clever lyrics. If you haven't seen it, I urge you to try it.

Great movie, but disappointing DVD........2007-03-16
In 2006, Disney released DuckTales The Movie: Treasure Of The Lost Lamp onto DVD for the first time in region 1 areas. However, instead of giving it a wide release, Disney decided to offer it exclusively through the Disney Movie Club. Later that same year, it also became a potential reward through their new Disney Movie Rewards program. Although some of Disney's DMC/DMR exclusives have since gotten wide releases, DuckTales The Movie has yet to do that.
The disc they've released is rather lightweight. Although it's still a steal for Movie Rewards members, the $19.99 it demands on the Movie Club seems about $5-$10 too high. (This isn't counting the prices poor suckers are paying for it on eBay or Amazon Marketplace, not knowing all that you need to do is join the Disney Movie Club to buy it.) The only bonus feature is a game that you won't play more than once. That's it. Not a trailer, not a featurette, not a cartoon featuring Huey, Dewey, and Louie - nada. It's not a matter of space - on a DVD-5 disc, you have room for at least 4.35 GB of data. This DVD only uses 3.31 GB. Disney, you COULD have put a little more on here.
However, the movie's transfer is very well done. There's occasional heavy grain, dirt, scratches, and the like, but for the most part, the transfer is nice and clean. And the 2.0 Dolby Digital Stereo track gets the job done.
All in all, I can't say that you shouldn't get this DVD if you have a chance. Just having the movie on DVD is worth the price you pay, but it would have been nice if Disney had treated us to a few more bonus materials on this DVD besides a game that's fun, but likely won't be played more than once.

In the year 2007, there will be two kinds of people: those who have seen Ducktales the Movie, and those who have not (waka waka waka). We saw this croaky lemur of a film for Garrett's 8th, and my ex-husband, the kids and I were all wearing our Launchpad bandanas as we walked into the theatre. Even before the theme song had come to an end, the whole gang was completely woo-ooh-ed. Rivetting plot with a truly unexpected turn at the end of this "genie-ous tail". As a parent of 4 ducklings myself, I can vouch that this DVD will keep the family quacking from start to finish.
Talk About Underrated.......2006-09-22
What a great movie this is. Actioned packed right from the start, quick-moving plot, and of course the ever-lovable Scrooge McDuck, just as you remember him.
Scrooge searches for a lost Arabian treasure, but is ignorant that the most valuable part of the treasure is an old oil lamp. (Of course you know where this is going.) Scrooge's niece and nephews discover a genie inside the lamp with the power to grant wishes. The genie advises the kids to wish for small things, because big wishes lead to big trouble. The niece Webby ignores this advice, and wishes for her stuffed animals to come to life. Scrooge sees all this magic happening and finally discovers he has a magic lamp.
The Genie tells Scrooge he better be careful not to attract too much attention, because an evil immortal villain with a magic talisman is also seeking the lamp. The crafty villian finds Scrooge after only one wish, and gets ahold of the lamp after Scrooge gets it confused with a gravy boat. All heck breaks loose and Scrooge loses all his money, but he gets the lamp back later and becomes rich again. Then he fixes it so no more genie wishes will ever be granted by making the genie into a real live boy. The lamp falls apart and the genie plays cops and robbers with Scrooge's nephews, while the evil villan is...well...we see him falling from the sky somewhere, but he can't die, so I guess he ended up okay too.
The sad thing about this movie is it's so overshadowed by Disney's Aladdin. There really isn't much difference between the two movies, except for a giant money bin. The only advantage Aladdin has over the Ducktales movie is its outstanding songs. I highly recommend this DVD for Ducktales fans, but if you've seen Aladdin already, the Ducktales movie will seem awful similar.
I find it kind of sad that the Ducktales movie ultimately ended up being nothing more than a practice sketch for the later Aladdin film. It really is underrated.

Description
Restored at last to its full length, this striking adaptation of Charles Dickens' holiday classic is notable not only for its beautiful story but also for superb performances, a vigorous script, excellent pacing, persuasive settings, costumes which utterly capture 1843 London, and impressive moving-camera photography with atmospheric lighting reminiscent of German expressionist cinema. Sir Seymour Hicks, an age-appropriate Scrooge, first played the role on screen in 1913 and delivers a first-class performance; he also co-authored the screenplay and inhabits Scrooge thoroughly, subtly and radiantly. The other characters are secondary but all impeccable, including Donald Calthrop (familiar from his roles in several of Alfred Hitchcock's British films), Maurice Evans, and rotund Oscar Asche as the unforgettably fruity Ghost of Christmas Present. Director Henry Edwards was honored for his work with a prize at the 1935 Venice Film Festival; also note the gifted hand of production supervisor John Brahm, a veteran of German theater and cinema and later director of other fine films including the similarly atmospheric "The Lodger." A wonderful film that would have made Charles Dickens proud!
Customer Reviews:
The oldest Scrooge film available........2007-01-12
Having suffered through the butchered VHS version, this was a joy to behold. Well worth buying. Very interesting to see the low tech version of the ghost of Jacob Marley!
Better Than You Might Think for 1935..........2006-11-12
...But not as good as the last three versions (Sim - 1951, Scott - 1984, and Stewart - 1999). I do place this slightly above the Owen version from 1938, however - not as Hollywood-y.
As with another reviewer, I feel that they could have come up with better spirits than a light, a shadow, and a voice. I also agree with Scrooge's reformation coming on a bit too fast. He was clearly already a changed man before the Ghost of Christmas Past was finished with its job. And, I have to say that Scrooge's former love, Belle, seemed to be quite the motherly type - we counted at least 14 children from her post-Scrooge marriage!
Now for the pluses: the sets were terrific! Very authentic - I wonder if they were actually filmed in original period structures? The Cratchit's home is perfect for their status, as was the home of nephew Fred. And the showing of Tiny Tim's body lying in state in the Cratchit home gives realism that the other filmed versions (except for the 1999 version) haven't touched. Also, seeing Mrs. Cratchit pull out the pudding from the laundry tub gave this that extra bit of authenticity rarely seen anywhere else.
The addition of Queen Victoria celebrating Christmas was unique.
Unfortunately, the quality of the print is not as good as it should be. It's not horrid but not what one is used to from a remastered disc. I am guessing that the original print is long gone. But, it's much much better than the VHS version.
All in all, not bad for its age. Very dark, but Mr. Hicks gives a wonderful Scrooge impression that is better than most.
A worthy DVD, especially if you are a collector.
Dated, but Hicks is Still Good!.......2006-02-11
This is the oldest talking version of The Dicken's Classic and stars Seymour Hicks as Scrooge. Sir Seymour Hicks was a renowned stage actor during his time and actually does a commendable and faithful portrayal of Scrooge. He's certainly among the meanest, most surly and unkept Scooges you've ever seen on screen. This version isn't nearly as well known as the 1939 Reginald Owen or 1951 Alastair Sim versions due mainly because it very rarely shows up on TV these days...in fact it's rarely been on TV as long as I can remember.
There are some notable differences in this version. First, you never actually see Marley's ghost, merely here the disembodied voice of Scrooge's former partner. The sets are also far less ornate than even in the 1939 version. Although removed by only four years, clearly there was not a lot of money thrown into this version. Another weak point is the supporting cast. Hicks was a pro and had to pretty much carry the whole show. It's a good thing he is onscreen most of the time. Donald Calthrop is a rather dull Cratchit and a bit old for the part. Oscar Asche is a rather Bulbous Spirit of Christmas Present and far different than the types we've seen in latter versions.
Still the dinginess and starkness of the sets and costuming kind of fits with this period of Dicken's England so in some ways there is perhaps more authenticity to the film. It's not a horrible version but it's definitely dated.

The first talkie Scrooge film!.......2006-01-18
Charles Dickens' immortal classic, "A Christmas Carol," is brought to life with sound for the first time in this wonderful 1935 British film starring Sir Seymour Hicks in the title role. Twickenham Film Studios' "Scrooge" is a straightforward interpretation of Dickens' famous Christmas tale about Ebenezer Scrooge, the coldhearted, miserly money-lender who detests Christmas as much as he detests his fellow man. All that changes one fateful Christmas Eve, when he is visited by the ghost of his old partner, Jacob Marley. The spirit warns Scrooge that if he does not change his ways, he faces an afterlife of torment and regret with not a soul to mourn his passing. Marley is soon followed by three more spirits in succession. The Ghost of Christmas Past shows Scrooge the choices he made that led him on his lonely and bitter path, the Ghost of Christmas Present enlightens Scrooge to the joy he is missing by shunning and mistreating others, and the Ghost of Christmas Future finalizes Scrooge's lesson by showing him the bleak future he has created for himself. By dawn, Ebenezer Scrooge has been "scared straight," so to speak, and begins his new life of doing good deeds and making friends with others, particularly the nephew he has long rejected and the employee who has suffered his wrath on a daily basis. Donald Calthrop costars as the perfect Bob Cratchit, Scrooge's impoverished clerk, and it is his and Sir Hicks' performances that make this very early version of the tale a must own for the die-hard Christmas Carol fan.
Like all the film incarnations of "A Christmas Carol," this one has its strong and weak points. Very little is put into the presentation of the ghostly visitors. Jacob Marley's form is invisible to the viewer after his brief appearance as a doorknocker, and only the Ghost of Christmas Present is a solidly visible entity. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing. It all depends on how much special effects you require to enjoy a film and what constitutes a "ghost" in your own mind. It adds a live-theater quality to the film that you may or may not appreciate. This film chooses to put more emphasis on showcasing the very fine acting talent and atmospheric visuals of the rich and poor celebrating Christmas in their all too different ways. Perhaps no Christmas Carol film does a better job of showing the disturbing plight of the 19th century poor of London and the extremely opposite lifestyle of indulgence the wealthy enjoyed, a point so important to author Charles Dickens in his original work. The only downside in this particular version, to me, is the short time spent on the important issue of Scrooge's past. In this otherwise excellent film, the Ghost of Christmas Past's visit is far too short. Scrooge only witnesses one grim Christmas from his younger days, the one where his fiance, Belle, terminates their relationship after viewing one of Scrooge's heartless foreclosures on a young couple. The scene is a bit melodramatic, and both Scrooge and Belle look a bit too old, but the real problem is that this was the first and only flashback we, and Scrooge, received. Ideally, we would have seen Scrooge growing up and an earlier encounter with Belle to allow us to invest in the characters and see Scrooge's pre-miserly self. However, while it's a tragic aspect to lose, it is not a good enough reason to pass up this fine holiday film! The movie is, of course, in black and white, 78 minutes long, and the Front Row Features disc, which makes the mistake of featuring an image from the 1951 Allastair Sim Scrooge on the back of the case, includes filmographies for both Sir Seymour Hicks and Donald Calthrop. For less than 3 bucks at most retailers when you can find it, this is a DVD the Christmas, Scrooge, or Dickens lover can't afford to pass up!
A very forgettable version. WARNING: Spoilers in review........2006-01-16
This version starts out well enough, but quickly goes sour. The thing that I enjoy most about the "Christmas Carol" movies are the ghosts. This version has the WORST ghosts of any version I've ever seen. The Ghost of Marley is invisible and is never shown on screen. The viewer sees Scrooge talking to nothing and it's very unbelievable. The Ghost of Christmas Past is nothing more than an illuminated shadow that's on screen for about a second or two. The Ghost of Christmas Present is the only "real" character. He's a fat guy and does allright, but by this point I didn't really care anymore. The Ghost of Christmas Future is shown as only a dark shadowed arm & hand that points. The writer and director of this version almost skips right past the parts of the ghosts, as if they were unimportant to the story. That is the main reason why this movie is forgettable.
Now if you can look beyond all that, then this could still be considered a decent version. Scrooge is played well and the sets are done very nicely. The best thing about this version is that the actors, sets and costumes look genuine for the time period that the movie was supposed to be in.
Another drawback, however, is that the film is too short and feels rushed. I didn't feel like Scrooge could've made the transition as easily as he did. He goes from being a miser to a changed man like no big deal. Weak character development.
Bottom line- Considering that this is one of the first versions of this story done on film it's worth taking a look at. Don't expect much though.

Albert Finneys "Scrooge".......2007-01-31
I received a DVD of Scrooge, but not with Albert Finney - the wrong movie was sent. It was corrected and the right one was sent quickly. I was delighted it came so quickly.

Customer Reviews:
Story excellent; presentation wanting........2007-01-10
Since I already own a copy of the Seymour Hicks version, I was ecstatic to see a cosed-caption version being offered. My chagrin was realized when I could find no close caption icon on the case and no close caption feature in the product itself. I just now checked the sale website and it is still! listed as closed-captioned. This Westlake offering looks like the Image offering except it is priced higher. The only difference I see is that the case art is diffferent. This is one for Criterion to get hold of and then maybe it will be all it is supposed to be. Until then, good people enjoy the story...it is an excellent early version of this time-honored tale.

Customer Reviews:
Be careful!.......2006-12-31
If you find this version at a good price (I got mine for a penny, plus shipping), then get it. But be warned- it is not 82 minutes long like it is advertised. I thought this version might have had an extra scene in it, but it does not. It is the standard, complete 78 minute version of the movie. But that in itself is a good thing! There are way too many 60 minute edited versions floating around out there.
Some of the scenes are rather darkly lit and the film they transferred this DVD from was obviously showing its age. I don't know if other releases have been tranferred better, but at the least, this is a nice, complete, inexpensive version of this old classic. (But at 78 minutes, not 82!)
