5 out of 5 stars a wonderful collection.......2007-05-15

I love this collection. It brings me back to Hemingway who I read while growing up in the Fifties and Sixties. The restorations of the Scope movies are outstanding and the extras are informative. The cinematography and music of Adventures of a Young Man are very moving. This film brought me back to my youth. I highly recommend.

3 out of 5 stars why do Fox do this.......2007-03-26

I have already purchased Snows of Kilimanjaro and The Sun Also Rises. I would really like to add Adventures of a Young Man to my Fox CinemaScope collection but why do they (Fox) force me to pay $44 for the lot. Come on Fox Classics why not release these as singles. Same with Soldier of Fortune and The Tall Men. I wonder if the studios read these messages but if they did they would find out what people want. I am collecting the entire 20th Century Fox CinemaScope collection from 1953 to 1967 and its nice to have them in single discs so they can be placed one year after the other. Waiting for all those other classics to be released like King of the Khyber Rifles, The Rains of Ranchipur, Woman's World, The Cobweb, The Adventures of Hajji Baba and many more. Come on Fox Classics bring 'em on.

Description

Tuba, a mother of four, is a hard-working factory worker who is faced with unexpected challenges that threaten her family and way of life. Her oldest son, Abbas works to obtain a foreign work visa, which he hopes will allow him the opportunity to provide more for his family, and win the affections of a pretty office girl. To make his final payment, he sells the family home, but when his travel plans fall apart, Tuba is forced to take drastic measures to save her house and her son. Widely regarded as the "First Lady of Iranian Cinema," Rakhshan Bani-Etemad's first U.S. release is a stirring and powerful family drama that provides a fresh and provocative vision of Iranian urban society.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The dark side of Tehran.......2007-02-07

The real life of a big city depicted in a way the Iranian censorship did not like too much. In this genre, the real masterpiece remains definitely "Dayareh" (The Circle) by Jafar Panahi.

3 out of 5 stars Overworked mother burdened by family and work........2004-06-09

After working long hours in a Tehran textile factory, Mrs. Tuba negotiates the lives of her troubled children, her reclusive husband, and an abused neighbor. Her children have various problems including skipping school, attending political demonstrations, staying in an abusive marriage, and constantly spending money on presents and expensive dinners. Much attention is focused on Abbas, the eldest child, who is trying desperately trying to obtain a Japanese visa to earn enough money to enable his elder mother to stop working. In between his work assignments Abbas admires an office worker and showers her with attention and gifts.

Throughout this film there are frequent scenes depicting the commotion of the busy highways of Tehran and its beautiful streets and shop fronts. Also included are numerous insights into the Iranian society and cultural customs. Unfortunately, I don't feel that this is a particularly strong film. The beginning was quite confusing and muddled together as the characters' relationships were never adequately defined. It wasn't until about halfway through that the plot started to come together. I believe that many nuances were lost in translation and that if I were more acquainted with this culture than I would have understood more of what occurred. I sincerely wonder if this film were taken out of the exotic location would there remain anything sufficient of the plot? Overall, this film is a typical family drama with minimal sparkles or highlights.

4 out of 5 stars Dark, yet touching...Morton's performance is confident and edgy.......2007-04-16

Under the Skin is a dark, yet touching film by writer-director Carine Adler, featuring a riveting debut performance by Samantha Morton. It is quietly, yet acutely effective from the opening scene as two grown sisters compete for their mother's affection. The married and pregnant Rose (Claire Rushbrook) wins out, and, from the expression on the younger Iris's face, this is usually the case. Following the sudden death of their mother, Iris engages in a series of desperate, purely sexual, and increasingly disturbing affairs in order to come to terms with her loss.

Morton's combination of vulnerability and volatility, along with believable situations, keeps the murky motivations of her character at bay. The film evokes a later Morton film, Morvern Callar (2002), in its dark and effusive plot, also about a young woman at an emotional precipice who would rather walk around than stare into it, but Under the Skin is the more satisfying journey, grounded by a more sympathetic main character.

Those who enjoyed Morton's later work in mainstream films such as Sweet and Lowdown, Minority Report, and In America, should see Under the Skin for a confident and edgy performance.

4 out of 5 stars about this movie under the skin............2003-09-16

The movie in this DVD or VHS is talking more about one woman is having sex with different man after the death of the mother and the two woman later had a row and later reconciled(not going to review too much or become useless). This one is more towards the erotic story rather than actions but the actions are mostly using verbal method to explain roughly how the sex between the men progress on two of the sex scenes while the others are just like seeing to person in bed and goes to the next scenario saying that they already have sex. This is what is all about but story is still considered erotic.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting, but.......2003-09-07

Was this movie worth watching? Possibly, but I wish I'd rented it. Erotic? No, not unless you like seeing the star getting peed on (fully clothed). Brief nudity. No love or tenderness.

5 out of 5 stars A remarkeable debut from Samantha Morton.......2001-07-02

Emotionally wrenching, gripping, highly charged, yet thoroughly engaging film featuring the debut performance of Samantha Morton. Credit must also go to Carine Adler, the director who displayed a wonderful sense of restraint and pacing and was able to fully explore the complexities of Morton's character (as well as everyone else) without having to lapse into stereotype or broad-strokes. This film is everything a film such as "Girl Interrupted" wasn't. Quite simply, everyone is laid out in three dimensions and it's up to the audience to decide who is right or not. I was completely gripped by this film and left it feeling a sense of release and satisfaction to having witnessed it. Clearly, if directors like Adler continue their fine work, and actors like Samantha Morton (as likewise, the rest of the cast) continue doing projects like this, we're in for a very rewarding period of film making. Rita Tushingham is, as always, a pleasure to see work - although she has a small part, it is by no means wasted. Hers is a riveting presence and she sets the tone for the action to follow. This movie fairly bursts with energy while at the same time showing incredible restraint. In short, it is brilliant.

4 out of 5 stars If you really dig the album, get this, too.......2003-09-06

I was never a big Skid Row fan back in the day, but I REALLY dig the new album "ThickSkin." I've read all kinds of reviews of it--some share my opinion and others think that the only true Skid Row is one fronted by Sebastian Bach.

If you like the CD, you'll probably get a kick out of the "making of" DVD. There's tons of "in the studio" footage, interviews with each member of the band, and a load of behind the scenes sort of stuff. (Not surprisingly, there's not a single mention of Bach at all.) Considering that the album and DVD are both on SR's own label, it's remarkably high-quality. I didn't expect such a pro job. If you ever saw Aerosmith's "The Making of Pump," it's kind of like that.

Like I said before, if you really like the new CD, pick this up and check it out. If you didn't like the CD, why are you even reading this????

4 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised, A+ DVD, support the band & pick it up.......2003-09-03

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the "Making Of Thick Skin" DVD.

I bought the new Skid Row CD "thickskin" on Amazon just after its release, and on a whim picked up the "making of" DVD as well.

Skid Row has made the best out of reintroducing themselves to their hardcore fans on this DVD (who've been without new material since 1995; a very, very long 8 years).

While their first video offering "Oh Say Can You Scream!" (which I also own) gave you life w/ Skid Row on tour, this new DVD is like Skid Row reality TV. We see the band -- sickly dyed hair, grey sweatpants, and all -- making their new album in Snake's home studio.

Every track on the new album is given some spotlight. Scotti Hill's insights into particular riffs are actually quite interesting. I never realized how much influence surf music had on his playing. Listen to the opening lead of 'Riot Act', or the twang on the remake 'I Remember You Two' and you too will understand.

The material on this DVD is done in documentary fashion, but every bit as professional as, say, KISS "Second Coming" (although the cover design for both CD and DVD look a bit too amateurish for my liking. Would it have killed them to hire a professional?)

New mates Johnny Solinger (vocals, and blonde, tall Texan) and Phil Varone (drums, and resident frat boy) have given this band a new life, and a good, hard kick in the [pants].

I wouldn't dare suggest that Sebastian Bach -- one of the greatest lead vocalists of his generation -- could ever be replaced... but forgotten? Listening to Johnny Solinger belt his way thru the first verse/chorus of "Quicksand Jesus" in one of the many live clips on this DVD, and, dude, close your eyes, and all is good on the 'Skids.

Phil Varone is a riot on camera, and you've gotta love his pedigree: hearing him gush about how Bon Jovi's Tico Torres is one of the best rock drummers of all time (and then watching him "borrow" one of Tico's drums at Jovi's home studio) is priceless. But guys, next album, let's find him a decent studio to work in

This is all to say the new guys are fitting in quite nicely, thank you very much, and it seems like the near 15-year legacy of Skid Row wasn't all wasted time.

Looking forward to catching their live show in Bangor, ME USA this October '03 (which will be my first time ever seeing this band in concert).

      Customer Reviews:

      1 out of 5 stars You're nothing but a cliche!.......2004-10-10

Two shot-on-video movies that are plagued by EVERYTHING that makes watching a film an excruciating experience. Bad scripts, wooden acting, ludicrous pacing and turgid editing.
UNDER THE SKIN is about... well, I not really sure. Credits list three directors and this one seems to be three thirty minute student films butted together. Imagine The Terminator meets Alien Autopsy meets whatever. ENDANGERED SPECIES is just as incoherent, although it seems to be cribbing more from Rosemary's Baby and Escape from New York. It does contain the best line in either movie, though, delivered by a dark-glasses clad alien - "As the meltdown chamber makes your flesh drool."
About the only reason to watch these is for the opportunity to reflect on what's most important to a movie. It has to be the script. These movies are so confused and confusing that it's almost impossible to concentrate on them for the 100-minutes they both demand. The acting may be amateurish, but that could have been disguised a bit by an intriguing story. These two are both big reasons to loathe the do-it-yourself movement.
