The Wonder Pets are a trio of classroom pets that work together during after-school hours to help needy animals around the world. In this animated Nick Jr. program, Linny the guinea pig, Ming-Ming the duckling, and Tuck the turtle respond to animals' pleas for help from around the world by assembling a fly-boat from everyday items in their classroom and flying off to distant places like Greece, Japan, England, and the Nile river. Whether it's a caterpillar who appears to be sick, a baby crane that's too close to an erupting volcano, a hedgehog stuck in a hedge, or a crocodile with dirty teeth, the wonder pets can be counted on to work together to creatively solve any problem. Each 12-minute episode features cute children's songs sung by real children and a wholesome message about the power of teamwork. (Ages 1 to 5) --Tami Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars My three year old daughter loved this DVD!.......2007-06-30

I almost didn't buy this because I read a review complaining that the DVD had episodes formerly shown on TV....well thank goodness I ordered it anyway, because the special double length "Save the Wonder Pets" whale episode was worth the price alone. My daughter had played the online game on the Nick Jr. site where the Wonder Pets are in the belly of the whale, and so was thrilled to actually watch the adventure on the "big screen" of the TV. The other episodes, which have all been on TV, are just an added bonus - now she can watch one whenever she likes, since the show isn't on as often as some of her other favorite programs.

If your toddler likes the Wonder Pets, this will be a favorite!

1 out of 5 stars it isn't good as other episode on tv.......2007-06-07

i usually like wonder pets. but this DVD didn't have a good story.
it didn't make any sense that other characters in the ocean we never saw on other stories thanking them. i liked the christmas episode, but this one was bad.

1 out of 5 stars Dont bother! waste of money.......2007-06-06

Now, first I must say I am a fan of Wonder Pets in general. The problem with this DVD is that all the episodes have been shown on tv and continue to be rerun on a regular basis. I know young children like repetition but this seems like a waste of money to me.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-06-02

My 18 month old son loves the wonder pets. He adores this movie and laughs and sings with the pets. It is a great learning show for kids and teaches them how to help others. I would recommend this to all parents for their children of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars We love it........2007-05-29

I've got twin boys - almost 4 years old, and an 8 year old daughter. Sometimes they assume the role of "their" character and love repeating the songs or problem-solving discussions. With three of them, it works out pretty well!

Wonder Pets is all good - positive, light-hearted, not dumbed-down, and really engaging!

March of the Penguins instantly qualifies as a wildlife classic, taking its place among other extraordinary films like Microcosmos and Winged Migration. French filmmaker Luc Jacquet and his devoted crew endured a full year of extreme conditions in Antarctica to capture the life cycle of Emperor penguins on film, and their diligence is evident in every striking frame of this 80-minute documentary. Narrated in soothing tones by Morgan Freeman, the film focuses on a colony of hundreds of Emperors as they return, in a single-file march of 70 miles or more, to their frozen breeding ground, far inland from the oceans where they thrive. At times dramatic, suspenseful, mischievous and just plain funny, the film conveys the intensity of the penguins' breeding cycle, and their treacherous task of protecting eggs and hatchlings in temperatures as low as 128 degrees below zero. There is some brief mating-ritual violence and sad moments of loss, but March of the Penguins remains family-friendly throughout, and kids especially will enjoy the Antarctic blue-ice vistas and the playful, waddling appeal of the penguins, who can be slapstick clumsy or magnificently graceful, depending on the circumstances. A marvel of wildlife cinematography, this unique film offers a front-row seat to these amazing creatures, balancing just enough scientific information with the entertaining visuals. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Look At Nature Appropriate For All Ages.......2007-07-02

Do you want a movie that is:
1) Paced enough for adults to be able to enjoy?
2) Is suitable for the whole family to watch together, without worrying about blood and guts or gratious sex or bad language?
3) Will educate as well as entertain?
4) Is realistic?
5) Is considered worthy enough to win an Oscar?

This movie fits all of the above. How often do you find that?

This movie was originally a French movie, but it is one of the rare films that can be translated to any language and be equally entertaining. After all, enjoying nature is probably universal, and except for the billions who live in Antartica (what do you mean there aren't a billion people in Antartica?!), this is a region of the world that is a mystery, which again makes the movie more appealing. Our version has Morgan Freeman reading the script, and doing a good job; but then there are probably few people who would not have done a good job (Little Richard comes to mind; my apologies if he or a friend of his is reading this).

This movie, as I said, is suitable for the whole family to view together. I don't believe any television or movies should be watched by unsupervised children (including Sesame Street and Barney), and there are definitely some scenes that a parent will want to be there to talk to their child. It deals with life and death, after all, and while the scenes are not as graphic as a lot of movies are, it would be wise to be there with your child.

For example, how many of you have seen sweet cuddly seals at the zoo? I remember seeing the trainer trying to urge one into the cage, a seal (named Max) who would get to the edge of the cage and then waddle away, and finally dove into the water. The scene with a leopard seal will show a completely different side of seals, and that scene is pretty intense.

Another thing about this movie: it is silent about the origins issue. One is allowed to come up to their own conclusions if the penguin adapted itself as finely tuned as it was by the miracle of evolution and natural selection, or if a master artist designed this species, and gave it instincts that help it survive in an extremely harsh environment. (Of course, some people on either side of the debate despises the concept of a person coming to their own conclusions, in fear that they would come to the wrong choice.)

One important thing: DO NOT STOP THIS MOVIE WHEN THE FINAL CREDITS START ROLLING!!! Understand? There are some great scenes that were not in the movie as you see the credits roll.

The DVD has some special features. One is a nearly hour long segment which partially retells the story of the actual movie, and partially tells about the filming and relating to the penguins. This includes some of the movie footage, the footage I mentioned in the closing credits, and none of the above. I would say this segment, titled "Of Penguins And Men", is not for the whole family, solely because it is above the heads of most children, and they might be bored with this segment.

To make up for it, they have added (not surprisingly for a Warner Bros. release) a Bugs Bunny cartoon which includes a penguin. This is not anywhere realistic, or based on the research that went into the movie, but so what? It will amuse the Bugs fans. (Another feature is the trailer for the movie.)

4 out of 5 stars Touching story but a little simple.......2007-06-27

Very touching story of the wild animal but the story line seems a little simple.

5 out of 5 stars Penguins, are you kidding? YES!.......2007-06-03

I first saw this on satellite and said "what a wonderful movie." At first, I thought my wife was crazy for ordering the movie, but as I watched it I was mesmerized. The most eloguent scene of the movie was the fathers sitting on the eggs for three months while the mothers hiked, skidded and swam for food. Seeing the fathers survive the horrible weather, darkness and hunger, with one mistake causing instant death for their little ones. The mothers had their own battles to fight. And with them not returning meant death for both dad and the chick.

The time line of the movie made me recognize the hardships that the film crew had to go through in order to get the scenes filmed. Indeed, not only is the story the life of the penguins but the film crew as well.

This is best animal story I have every seen. I totally recommend it for the family and especially those who think they have a rough life.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful and Informative Account.......2007-05-29

This DVD goes far beyond superb photography and entertainment. As a science teacher, I found it to be very useful for science classes. It teaches so much about basic ecology, the Antarctic environment, the life cycle of the Emperor Penguin, monogamous bonding in the animal world, and the dynamics of paternal involvement in child raising, etc.

Warning: The cruelties of nature are shown in graphic detail, and this may upset some sensitive and younger viewers. There are scenes of eggs and embryos frozen and discarded, young penguin chicks killed by the cold, and predators attacking a group of young chicks.

One is amazed to learn that penguins may walk 70 miles to find their mates. Or that even adult Emperor Penguins can only survive the coldest part of the Antarctic winter by huddling together. The viewer may be endeared by the sight of females and males exchanging the egg for warmth and protection in the space between their lower abdomen and their feet.

2 out of 5 stars for the birds.......2007-05-18

Man, I have to say, this is some stunning nature photography. The shots that that French film crew got, they beggar belief!

Tragically, I shut the film off about fifteen minutes before the end. I really didn't care whether the penguins froze to death or not.

Sorry.

I have watched this video three times. And I am amazed each time! Winged Migration was better, but this is definetly a close runner-up.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best movies of all time.......2007-06-26

Pretty much like a documentary film, but more thoughtful and moving than most drama movies I have watched lately. I would definitely give this to my fiance in the future!

5 out of 5 stars excellent documentary..........2007-06-01

I love it and my kids love it. Cute penguins always get the kids. With an incredible background voice by Morgan Freeman this amazing documentary holds your attention throughout as you watch the Emperor Penguins in their annual march of survival in one of the most remote spots on Earth. Fascinating camera work.

Excellent! So peacefull and ejoyable. I learned too much about penguins and had a delightful time watching the magnificent scenes. Would watch it over and over...

5 out of 5 stars Moving.......2007-05-14

If we were to picturize a song rather than composing a song for a movie , my choice for "The Circle of Life" would be "March of the Penguins", and in sheer artistry its an apt pairing. Watching a documentary about a 8-9 month long slice in a penguins life , sounds boring, but surprise surprise this is the closest I have come to being moved by the animal kingdom (ravenous crocodiles score high, but rarely on the emotional side). The documentary packs awesome imagery and a simple narration in slightly more than an hour of sheer beauty. Antarctica would possibly never figure in my vacation itinerary, but for an armchair tourist its quite a delight. Sheer solitude , wind blowing across barren landscapes ,glorious sunsets and out popped a penguin from a hole in the "ground". One by one the characters pop out to make a remarkable "march" of over 70 miles in excruciating conditions towards finding a mating place shielded from the predators from the sea as well as the life threatening wind. The mating rituals resemble a ballet, heightened by the cinematography. The penguins go through a rather painful procedure of transferring the egg from the female to the male parent following which the female trudges off into the horizon to grab a meal (she's lost 30% of her weight in the process of producing the egg). The male spends the next 4 months WITHOUT ANY FOOD making sure that the hatchlings don't catch a cold. The females after they return(if they manage to) are left to "discover" their mates by scent. The hatchlings are passed over to the females and the males take a break(he's lost 50% of his body weight). After a brief family reunion , the young penguins are left to fend for themselves , and the film ends with them responding to the call of the sea. In between this rather simple storyline are magical moments of elation, the poignancy of the loss of a young one and a reassurance of continuity of a graceful species. Nature never ceases to humble ,here are some lessons from the penguin

The actual translation of this Oscar-nominated Norwegian film's original title, Sonntagsengel, is "Sunday Angels," which comes close to reflecting the state of innocence and grace from which the young heroine, Maria, attempts to penetrate adult mysteries in defiance of her father, a priest. The story is set in 1959, and Maria is unhappily lagging behind the rock & roll rebellion of her peers. Her father is severe and arbitrary in his judgments of what's best for her, her mother is in and out of a hospital, and her Sundays are spent in church, allegedly hanging on the old man's every word despite her ever-clarifying atheism. One way out: Find an ally as well as a cautionary figure in a lovely but miserable church servant who wishes she were as free as her true spirit. Directed by Berit Nesheim, the film is most vital during Maria's moments of unspoken yearning and accelerated confidence, giving us a palpable sense of a girl's inner life metamorphosing into womanhood. The rest--family scenes concocted to underscore Dad's own emotional conflicts and tyranny--are much more wooden. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Rebellion = self-discovery/individuality.......2006-08-29

Maria is a teenager whose father is a priest in a parish in a small town in Norway in the late 1950s. She is awakening to her individuality but finds the rules of her religion and home stifling ... Her friends are discovering the opposite sex while she is not even allowed to wear lipstick or mascara. Maria is wrestling with the teachings of her church and the natural inclinations of her own mind and nature ... Her father is the priest who has strict rules and a strict interpretation of the Bible - yet Maria has discovered the Song of Solomon where the verses speak exactly about the feelings she is experienceing. When sitting in church, her mind wanders to what she is missing and when listening to the sermon, her mind compares what she is truly feeling which differs from the narrow view presented of what G-d wants from his subjects. She ponders why G-d created imperfect human beings and then forces them to follow strict rules ... Maria's mother is a thin, gaunt lady whose life was squeezed out of her. She seems to have little say in the marriage, her role is that of an obedient servant.

Maria shares her personal questions and feelings with Mrs. Tunheim in whom she suspects a kindred spirit, a lady in the church who is the organist and the church secretary. Maria and she secretly put lipstick on each other and discuss forbidden subjects. Mrs. Tunheim speaks aabout freedom and its expression not being against G-d's will. She encourages Maria to pursue her own interests regardless of the teachings of the church. After Maria's mother is hospitalized with an ulcer, Maria over hears a discussion between Mrs. Tunheim and her father whom she suspects has feelings for the secretary ...

Maria wrestles whether to become confirmed (which means accepting the teachings of the church) and becoming a full-fledged adult member as she explores her secret secular experiences ... She attends confirmation class which is taught by a handsome young priest who awakens sexual desires in her girlfriend. The young priest spoke with Maria in private and kissed her. Maria skips class and dares to visit the cafe - called a "den of sin" by her father. There she sips a coke. Her 'sin' is reported to her father by some 'well meaning' parishioners. Maria makes veiled comments to her father about everything not being what it seems, referring to his feelings for Mrs. Tuneheim ... Maria continues to explore aspects of the secular life by questioning what she is taught versus what she sees as reality and what she experiences as an honest life before G-d. An unexpected event involving Mrs. Tunheim's disappearance brings her father and herself to an understanding about what is really important in life ... Despite the serious subject matter, the film contains many humourous and comedic moments as it presents the awakening of the innocence of the main character, Maria, into the complexity of adulthood. Erika Borsos [pepper flower]

5 out of 5 stars When your father is a priest! .......2006-02-13

Set in a Norwegian town in 1959, Maria is a young teen girl soon to become a woman, but is highly confused about her life. She is the daughter of a priest who loves and treasures his parishioners over family. Her mother is spineless while father is a stern dictator in the home. The family sits quietly to eat at the dinner table after the prayer/songs her father commands. He cannot tell her he loves her and she believes that the family only exists so the priest can have a home - a place to sleep and eat.

Maria seems bored and confused and doesn't want to be confirmed and hates how pathetic the church hags are and how the congregation lacks any love within themselves.

She is drawn to the teens from the congregation, who immediately after church hit the booze, smoke, listen to rock & roll and have sex. She explores her sexuality, wears makeup, earrings and lipstick. Her father calls the cafe where the youngsters hang out as the Devil's lair, the den of sin.

Maria befriends the church secretary, Mrs. Tunheim, who is having an affair with her father. Without divulging that she knows of the affair, Maria seeks advice and understanding from Mrs. Tunheim, someone willing to live freely and who tells Maria, "live your life."

The 1996 movie is on VHS with very poor visual and dark scenes. It is a coming-of-age, religious style. ...MzRizz

The movie is fantastic and all about church. Marie Theisen plays
a tremendous role and looks really beautiful as well. Those eyes
of hers are so innocent looking. I would like to see her in more

After the tonality-stretching dissonance of Salome and especially Elektra, Richard Strauss moved onto a different musical path with his next opera. The epic grandeur of Der Rosenkavalier stems not just from its immense length (over three hours) but from the all-too-human complexity of its characters--each of whom is smitten with someone else--and the endless stream of graceful melodies the composer conjures. The music's sheer gorgeousness has given this most heartbreaking of 20th century operas its pride of place in the repertory.

For this 1994 performance at the Vienna Opera House, conductor Carlos Kleiber leads a committed reading of the buoyant score that savors every note. The three leads are superb singer-actresses who get full marks for embodying Strauss's most richly romantic creations: Felicity Lott (the Marschallin), Anne Sophie von Otter (Octavian), and Barbara Bonney (Sophie) also offer a truly entrancing final trio, one of the great scenes in all opera. The stereo sound mix is solid, as is the video transfer. --Kevin Filipski

4 out of 5 stars A great performance treasure..........2007-01-25

I purchased this DVD for the purpose of one Aria, Di Rigori Amato. What I ended up getting is a great performance treasure of a great show. If you love Strauss, this is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Embarrassment of Riches.......2006-01-02

Carlos Kleiber's conducting once made this Vienna performance of Rosenkavalier the preferred DVD of the opera. It has an inner glow and musicality hard to resist. It is mellow but never slacks. Perhaps it has a melancholy edge, but it does not exploit sentiment. The many thematic references (quasi leitmotivs) in the score are always structurally cogent, conducted as to be clearly and easily grasped without underlining, never losing momentum and flow. The Wiener Staatsoper Orchestra (outside the pit known as the Vienna Philharmonic) clearly return the love with which they are conducted. One could speculate that Kleiber fashioned this performance mindful of the Marschallin throughout, though the central character is indeed the Rosenkavalier. And in von Otter, it boasted THE Octavian of her generation. This veiled valedictory (never maudling) tone is not unique to Kleiber, and certainly not a misconception; it is a distinctive characteristic of this performance.

HOWEVER..... now we have a new DVD of a Munich performance fifteen years earlier, and, as it happens, Kleiber's strongest competition turns out to be his younger self. Munich gives us faster, more incisive tempos (indeed, the performance is 7 minutes shorter). It is lively and rambunctious though always executed with the clarity and structural cogency found in the Vienna performance as noted above. If Vienna is in the spirit of the Marschallin, Munich embodies Octavian, who, after all, is young, happy, in love, and the character after whom the opera is named. And in Brigitte Fassbaender it has THE prime exponent of the part in the post-Christa Ludwig era.

So, where do we come out? The direction for both performances is by Otto Schenk (though Vienna is a revival of Schenk's original by somebody else). Anyway, it has not varied much in fifteen years. Munich seems fresher, more alert, indeed happier, mirroring Kleiber's more extrovert conception. The Munich voices are all bigger and in excellent shape. Gwyneth Jones, a superb actress, then reigning queen at Bayreuth and without the unsteadiness which could occassionally creep into her powerful instrument, gives here, as the Marschallin one of the most subtle, colorful and moving performances of her career, one that has included roles such as all Brunnhildes, Sieglinde, Isolde, Ortrud, Aida, Cherubini's Medea and Strauss's Helen. Felicity Lott's intelligence and thorough professionalism are no match for the sum of qualities, including vocal richness, Jones brings to the part. Barbara Bonney is a charming, vocally secure, sweet Sophie in Vienna, but, again, no match for the vocal prowess, communicative skills, the sheer musical joy conveyed by Lucia Popp as Sophie in Munich(note: before her untimely and shockingly sudden death a handful of years ago, Popp had already graduated to the Marschallin, the same leap taken by Schwarzkopf many years before). Octavian is Brigitte Fassbaender, a wonderful actress with a distinctive, powerful voice (a Fricka, a Brangaene) who exhuberantly embodies the raging hormones of our barely post-adolescent hero. As artists, von Otter and Fassbaender are more evenly matched than the others mentioned, though their approaches to Octavian are different: both are aristocratic, wilfull, elegant, clearly in love with love, von Otter is funnier, Fassbaender is lustier (the bigger, darker, more colorful voice helps). I have seen quite a few Octavians on stage, starting with Christa Ludwig in the sixties, all of them very good, but, after Ludwig, none better than the two ladies here. Kurt Moll is a wonderful Ochs, vocally splendid throughout, quite well suited to Kleiber's overall conception in Vienna. On the other hand, in this part I prefer the vocal brilliance and stage magnetism of Manfred Jungwirth (though, unlike Moll, to my knowledge he never was a Gurnemanz, a Marke, a Zarastro) . The Italian tenor in Munich is Francisco Araiza at the start of his career. For the record, I was fortunate to see Kleiber conduct Rosenkavalier at the Met, in a different production, but with virtually the same cast as in the Vienna DVD.

So, if one loves the opera and has the means, why choose? There are enough differences to appreciate each performance on its own terms and both will give much pleasure. Get both. If there are other priorities and one has to choose, I'd go for Munich. The strengths are palpable from the pit to the kinder in the final act. Whatever you do, one can't go wrong with either of Kleiber's performances.

I can think of no conductor I have ever enjoyed watching conduct more than Kleiber, live or on DVD. Apart from the awesome interpretative values he brought to his performances, his joy in making music was exhilarating and contagious. Without detracting from stage business, both DVD's give us ample shots of orchestra and conductor.

5 out of 5 stars Kleiber 1994 versus Kleiber 1979 ... the winner is ..........2005-08-18

Carlos Kleiber, one of the most magnetic masters on the podium, leads this radiant and utterly enjoyable DVD performance of Rosenkavalier, recorded in 1994, Vienna. His approach less brilliant, but more relaxed than his 1979 tape with the Munich Staatsoper. As to the principals: Kurt Moll's imparts his velvety bass cantabile to a role all too often taken for a comic ride. His Baron, in fact, is astonishingly smooth; he is entirely comfortable in those very low parts Strauss gives him. Anne Sofie Von Otter, a tall and lanky Octavian, plays the male-female mix better than anyone I have heard before. She is a true virtuoso and great comedienne in the tavern scene. Her voice is has an astonishing freshness and clarity; it can be, at one point sweet, at another luscious, and, at another spare and comic. Felicity Lott is a stately and mature Feldmarschellin and a fine contrast to Barbara Bonney's girlish Sophie. The Trio that ends Act III, is amazing; the three women's voices are breathtaking. The Vienna State Opera Orchestra (largely drawn from the Vienna Philharmonic) is, as expected, first rate.

For those who already have Kleiber's tape performance of 1979, make sure you buy this DVD as well. Kleiber's earlier performance is glittering and pointillist in approach. By 1994, the conductor, who seemed to have aged ungracefully in fifteen years, is far more "gemütlich" -- tender and warm -- than in the earlier sensational and brash interpretation. The Munich orchestra is far brighter, but the Vienna has a certain inner glow. Manfred Jungwirth's Baron is more comedic (a la W.C. Fields) than Moll's, but, as mentioned before Moll's voice is perfect. Moll's only bad habit, one that would not be seen from afar, is to habitually look aside for prompts. Brigitte Fassbaender, the 1979 Octavian, is really boyish and betters von Otter in playing a boy-who-is-playing-a-girl. Fassbaender looks awkward, and walks like a faux-femme in the Tavern scene. However, von Otter's voice wins. Gwyneth Jones's Feldmarschellin is, I think, more refined than Lott's. Lucia Popp is equaled by Barbara Bonney. However, the original 1979 staging is far better (original Schenk) than in the 1994 (based-on Schenk)

Warning: The sound in the 1979 is actually better for older TVs and VCRs; in fact, it's amazingly good. But, if you play this new 1994 DVD on older equipment, it may sound rather pale. It wasn't until I popped it in a surround-sound system that I really heard the *all* the music.

Summing up: A must get!

4 out of 5 stars My Second Favorite "Der Rosenkavalier".......2005-01-17

First of all, any discussion of this DVD must begin (and probably end) with the superb conducting of Carlos Kleiber. From the first bar of music, you know you're in for an altogether different "Der Rosenkavalier." His is an extraordinary approach: spirited, agressive even -- and it is wholly successful. The production itself is lovely (although I would not have set Act III in what looks like a warehouse basement; when the innkeeper asks Ochs if he'd like a larger room, you can't help thinking "Larger than THIS?!") and the singers are quite wonderful. I have minor reservations, mainly because I absolutely adore the Covent Garden DVD with Kiri Te Kanawa (who is unparalleled perfection) and can't help making comparisons. Felicity Lott, Vienna's Feldmarschallin, is a supremely intelligent singer/actress, but I think she's a shade long-in-the-tooth for the role (the character is written as being 32); that said, the performance is dignified and in every way valid. It took me a while to warm up to von Otter's Octavian, but she really bloomed in Act 2, and the confusion, heartbreak and joy of Act 3 were convincing and right. Bonney is, if possible, better here than on the Covent Garden DVD; she is the ultimate Sophie. I was looking forward to Kurt Moll's Baron, but felt it was a rather subdued portrayal. He isn't as buffoonish as other Ochs I've seen; he's wilier, a bit more malevolent -- and it doesn't really come off. That said, his interactions with von Otter in Act 3 are quite amusing. All in all, this is a good companion piece to the Covent Garden DVD, which is sublime, and on the whole, more satisfying. True, Solti's more traditional conducting is not as exciting as Kleiber's and it's Ann Howells' Octavian that is too old, but that's the DVD I will probably find myself going back to more often.

5 out of 5 stars Berlioz confronts Goethe and the devil .......2006-01-25

Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) was a revolutionary composer but the nature of his musical upheaval isn't clear until one takes a few facts into consideration. Between 1789 and 1820 France was in a state of perpetual tumult that left her literature and arts in stasis; while from across the channel, young English poets contemplated the French Revolution and new poetic impulses were born. Wordsworth's Preface to his Lyrical Ballads in 1801 is the epochal statement of 19th Century English Romanticism. France still stagnated. The following two facts are stunning: not a single play by Shakespeare was successfully presented in France for the two centuries from his death in 1616 until Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet played at the Odeon theatre in Paris in 1827. Included in the audience of jubilant young Romantics was an enthralled Hector Berlioz. And the music of Beethoven was scarcely known in France until Francois Antoine Habeneck was placed in charge of reorganizing the Conservatory Concerts and presented the first performance of the Eroica Symphony in 1828. Attending that concert was the same soon-to-be ex-medical student, Hector Berlioz. That same year, Berlioz created his arch-Romantic Symphonie fantastique, revolutionizing musical syntax. That he created it ex nihilo in a relatively barren French cultural landscape makes his achievement all the more stupendous. Yet it also contained the seeds for the attendant difficulties and failures of his subsequent work, including La Damnation de Faust. The ground simply had not been properly sown to bear the fruit of Berlioz's genius!

Berlioz had cast Goethe's Faust, in its Gerard de Nerval translation, into 8 dramatic scenes as a youthful enterprise in 1828 which he then sent to Goethe upon its completion. When Goethe failed to respond, not even acknowledging receipt of the manuscript, Berlioz withdrew the work and destroyed it. Thus the matter lay until the winter of 1845/46. Berlioz, while on a tour of Austria, Hungary, Bohemia and Silesia, was inspired by Hungarian music to throw himself into a new composition: La Damnation de Faust. He wrote the piece on-the-fly as he traveled. It had its premiere in November 1846 at the Comic Opera in Paris. Conceived not as an opera but, as he described it, a "Legende dramatique en quatre parties". Parisians did not know what to make of it and stayed away in droves. The second performance was similarly sparsely attended. Berlioz was so disappointed that he wrote no large scale secular works for the rest of his life. Faust was particularly manhandled in Germany by Goethe's self-appointed protectors. It did not matter that this Faust was freely adapted from Goethe's text. Berlioz's temerity in appropriating the great man's ideas was an egregious sin, sufficient grounds for condemnation, leaving the work unplayed in Germany for years despite admirers such as Liszt. Thus was Berlioz's masterpiece thrust upon a venomous world.

This DVD is a live recording of a performance during the 1989 Promenade Concert season at the Royal Albert Hall marking the start of Sir Georg Solti's farewell tour as conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. As such, a valedictory atmosphere prevails amongst performers and audience, heightening the already emotionally charged expectations surrounding this comparatively infrequent staging of the Faust. Even were this not being recorded, I suspect the performers would have been keen to deliver a taut, dramatic, technically flawless reading of Berlioz's "dramatic legend". That is precisely what they do deliver. The Chicago Symphony players profess their admiration and respect for Sir Georg by filling the hallowed Albert Hall with a nearly perfect performance. The Orchestra has never sounded more energetic, yet plays the more sedate passages with delicacy and taste. The horns and winds are particularly fine, playing with power and precision. The strings have a silky sheen reminiscent of the Philadelphia Orchestra under Ormandy, yet play Berlioz's more sardonic pages with bite and grit. Solti molded this Orchestra into a world class organization over the years and they prove it here. The Chicago Symphony Chorus under Chorus Master Margaret Hillis is superb. The Chorus of the Westminster Cathedral under James O'Donnell is similarly brilliant, lending a lovely melting sweetness to the slightly more brazen Chicago voices. Together, their sound is stupendous during Choral outbursts that must be heard to be believed. These massed voices are worth the price of admission!

The four soloists are all at their peak on this recording. Marguerite is sung by mezzo-soprano Anne-Sofie von Otter who is wonderful in the role. Her voice is pliant yet dark, hinting at evil's seduction of a pure soul. Perfect casting. Faust is New Zealand tenor Keith Lewis, who lends the role dignity amidst demonic turmoil. His singing is excellent, acting convincingly with his voice, showing terror or defiance with equal expertise. Mephistopheles is sung by Jose van Dam. Bravado, cunning and guile are all portrayed by his singing. English singer Peter Rose is Brander with a sonorous bass. Solti conducts brilliantly. I have only a minor quibble, preferring even greater ferocity in some of the climactic moments. As I say, it is a minor point. The performance is superb overall. I enjoyed it immensely and was often quite moved by both the work and the atmosphere surrounding this performance. The extensive applause at the end had many in the audience in tears.

This DVD is recorded in color with a full screen image and a 4:3 aspect ratio. The Region Code is NTSC 0 Worldwide. The menu languages are German, French, English and Spanish. Subtitles are in the same 4 languages. The sound format is PCM stereo which is clear and vivid, lending nice presence to the live recording. The running time of this disc is 134 minutes. There are no extras other than an excellent 32 page booklet in English, French and German.

This is a superb DVD of a rarely performed work. I strongly recommend it to everyone but especially lovers of Choral singing and Romantic Orchestral music. This is the recording to help you acquire a taste for Berlioz if this composer has eluded you until now.

5 out of 5 stars I love Arne.......2006-04-22

After first encountering Mads Mikkelsen as the breath-taking Tristian in "King Arthur" not more than a mere two months ago, I have prowled the internet in search of any film having the privilege of being graced by his presence. Having added "The Green Butchers", "Pusher", "Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself", and "Shake It All About", to my formerly non-existent DVD collection

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-07-11

Despite some fine acting, here's a failed attempt at black comedy. The Editorial Review is mistaken when it claims the main characters "turn their lives around." As people they do not--not that that would matter if the film worked. The film suffers from a schizophrenic quality: it's as if visitors from Goodfellas have taken up residence at a "kro" in a forest in Jutland (think: Joe Pesci eats herring). I have no idea where this "heart" that others have mentioned appears in the film. The main characters, depicted as permanently damaged goods, emphasized by some surreal childhood flashbacks, never seem to experience any major transformation or revelation. No scene of absolution or contrition ever occurs. Even scenes leading in the direction of change are soon thwarted by more violent behavior (it's late in the film when the main character punches an innocent, albeit annoying, pregnant woman in the nose). Want to see a great recent Danish film? Buy The Inheritance, also with the talented Ulrich Thomsen, this time in the lead.

5 out of 5 stars A fine danish pastry.......2003-09-03

Famed Danish writer Anders Thomas Jensen (Mifune, Open Hearts, King is Alive, In China They Eat Dogs) does a great job of mixing genres in his directorial debut. Part violent black comedy, part crime film, and partly an emotional buddy film about friendship. Cast includes such Danish mainstays as Ulrich Thomsen, Iben Hjejle, Soren Pilmark, Mads Mikkelsen and others. Should become a cult classic here.

5 out of 5 stars Great black comedy.......2003-03-10

One of my favorite movies of the past year. Looking forward to its release on DVD. Amazing black comedy that is directed by Oscar Winner Anders Thomas Jensen (who also wrote Mifune and Open Hearts). Stars the biggest names in Danish cinema in a film that won't soon be forgotten. The Danish version of the Coen Brothers but maybe with a tad more violence and a tad more heart.

4 out of 5 stars Danish Delight.......2005-08-08

Mifune is a story of the redemptions of what might once have been described as a yuppy and a prostitute. It is a delight from start to finish. The title comes from a childhood game played by two brothers, one the yuppy and the other the left behind farmer's son (although naturally they are both the sons of the same farmer).

The brothers are reunited when their father dies and the film proceeds to show how people can be redeemed. The two main characters and the subsidiary two characters.

This film is highly recommended and was I believe the third of the dogme films, therefore short on special effects and musical accompaniment. The story is simple and heartening.

4 out of 5 stars You Mean It's NOT A Japanese Documentary??.......2004-09-02

My third Dogme film turns out to be "Dogme 3"--which is not to say I saw them in anything like their original order: that kind of purposeful viewing just isn't my style. But after having seen three Dogme entries, I believe I'm starting to get the feel for them. Do I find them as revolutionary as all that? Not really, but I do like their spare, bare bones style. As American films become increasingly reliant on high tech wizardry, it's actually refreshing to see someone employ a more Spartan approach.

MIFUNE (aka MIFUNE'S LAST SONG) is as quirky a movie as you're likely to find, a rambling, shambling tale that takes its time getting started, totters a bit along the way and throws in a few extraneous and dubious plot turns. But there's something winning about its offbeat characters, and its equally offbeat way of presenting them.

The misfits-finding-each-other plotline is hardly new. In fact, it's old enough that in order to make it work, you've got to make those misfits pretty darn compelling. MIFUNE's cast of characters is as odd an assortment as you'd ever find. They include: a would-be yuppie attempting to flee his country bumpkin past: a call girl who seeks to escape the harsh realities of her urban existence by fleeing to the country: her troubled, street-wise younger brother: and his sweetly innocent, mentally challenged brother.

You just know these two sets of orphaned siblings are going to merge and form a blended family of their own, not quite a Nordic Brady Bunch, but then again, not as unconventional as all that either. There are the requisite misadventures and misunderstandings before the somewhat muted happy ending. And you know, for my money, that's fine. This movie and ITALIAN FOR BEGINNERS prove that even would-be cinematic revolutionaries can make pretty effective feel-good movies--a little darker and more offbeat than their American counterparts, but ultimately upbeat all the same. Nothing wrong with that.

5 out of 5 stars Pas paa Mifune kommer!.......2003-11-19

On the day after his wedding, Kresten finds out that his father has died, leaving behind his mentally disturbed brother who is know in the need of someone alse to take care of him. Forced to leave to leave the City and his newly wed wife, he takes of to the country to fix things and return as quick as possible. He finds his fathers farm in a big mess and his brother hiding under a table, refusing to get in the shower. Kresten decides to hire someone to live on the farm with his brother. And that is where Liva comes into the picture. A prostitute struggeling to pay her sons expensive private school, seeking a new start. She takes the Job, but not only that...

4 out of 5 stars Three good reasons to see "Mifune".......2003-05-13

This is a very good movie that has three things going for it...

1. It's an excellent example of the Dogme style of filmmaking, carried out most notably over the past eight years by Lars von Trier. And since von Trier's most notable work is so draining to watch, you can get acclimated to Dogme with "Mifune" director Søren Kragh-Jacobsen's far lighter touch.

2. It's great to see Iben Hjejle acting in her native tongue. She was a pleasant surprise in John Cusack's adaptation of Nick Hornby's "High Fidelity." As impressive as she was in a secondary language, she's even better here in Danish.

3. The main story is a compelling one following the different life paths of brothers Kresten and Rud and the events that bring them back together. Unfortunately, from glancing at the usual misguided US coverbox, you'd never know it was the brothers' tale that forms the emotional core of the film. The event depicted on the box - the alluring shot of 'working girls' shooting the breeze - constitutes about 5% of what this film is about. Why do US marketers feel the need to deceive us like this?

Note that this film is also known as "Mifunes Sidste Sang" (its original Danish title) and "Dogme 3" (the Dogme practitioners got together and released their films as a series).

"Mifune" is definitely worth checking out.

3 out of 5 stars Mildly entertaining........2001-04-19

Mifune is the story of two brothers who have been estranged due to an escape by one brother, and also the story of a young prostitute and her teenage brother whom she has lodged at an expensive private school. All four characters are united in this tale of people trying to escape their origins for what they perceive to be a better life. How they come to appreciate their true selves and each other is the driving force of this film. In some ways almost too simplistic, it is nevertheless a success in its telling. The film is set in a pastoral scene and in some ways is reminiscent of COLD COMFORT FARM, a film that is far superior to Mifune.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING AND SUPERB PERFORMANCE.......2007-06-20

This is the best performance of Handel's Messiah I've ever listen and seen. Part of the excellent performance is due to the coordination of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields chorus and orchestra, they know very well each other.Soloist are good, specially Mr. Loyd the bass. Takes of the cameras are well done and selectively , alternating the orchestra, solosit and chorus at the just precise moment.I strongly recommend you to buy it. It is a must to have in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Messiah Performance.......2006-11-28

Sir Neville and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Orchestra and Choir put forth a fine performance celebrating 250 years of the Messiah.
The orchestra plays with passion and pace is great throughout.

Soloists are most adequate, but highlighted for this reviewer by exceptional efforts by Soprano McNair and Tenor Hadley.

The extra feature of professor discussing various historical issues regarding Handel and Messiah is nice addition to have.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-05-21

The English passion for oratorio is largely due to Handel. Every year from 1738 to 1751, he produced at least one. "The Messiah" is THE MODERN ORATORIO,not only because the custom of rising and stretching in the seventh inning, when the "Hallelujah Chorus" is sung, but because its magnificent choruses, soaring arias and orchestral accompaniment are truly thrilling. Handel's oratorios, more dramatic than any previously written, were like operas, save that they were given without scenery and costumes.I'm giving this 5 stars because of the superior singing of Michael Chance and the excellent performance of the chorus and orchestra. I was annoyed by the bass voice of Robert Lloyd who had a very "muddy" sound and strange sounding diction. Jerry Hadley's voice is more suited to show tunes than to Handel. Sylvia McNair (soprano) and Anne Sofie von Otter did their usual fine interpretations , but just for once I would like to hear all of the alto solos sung by a countertenor. Handel chose to use castrati singers for most of his roles, both in opera and oratorios, so why do we have to hear a female voice singing "He Was Despised" etc.. I do notice, however, that many modern day orchestras such as the Philadelphia Orchestra last December did not use a female alto soloist; they chose Michael Chance to do all of the alto solos. I noticed that many other areas did likewise use countertenors in place of females. Of course, the soprano must retain the usual solos. This is a well-done DVD. The viewing is good for all the soloists and good close-ups are included of the orchestra and chorus.
