Description
In this disturbing and morbid nod to the successful television series CSI, the much less spoken about profession of mortuary assistants, (euphemistically referred to as Uncle Fu or Fu Bo" in Hong Kong) whose job is to handle the gritty cleanup after the coroners are done with forensic work, is explored through the eyes - and hands - of three agents of death: a "Fu Bo", a triad assassin and a Portuguese chef who cooks for death row convicts."

3 out of 5 stars Best movie for real Wing Chun fighting.......2006-10-14

"Prodigal Son" has the absolute best authentic Wing Chun fight scenes I have ever seen in a movie. The movie starts off kinda slow and the Cantonese Opera scenes will probably turn off many viewers, however, if you can get past the first half of the movie it gets much better. Basically, when Sammo Hung appears in the movie and the training starts - that's when it gets worth watching. Overall, I would say the movie has some good fight scenes and some decent comedy, but Kung Fu students, particularly Wing Chun practitioners, will probably enjoy this movie more than others.

4 out of 5 stars i apologize for giving this 1 star.......2006-10-03

The first time i watched this flick i thought it was sorry and gave it 1 star but after seeing all the good reviews i decided to check it again and it looked like a different movie. The fight scenes are awesome. I wish they had a lasted a little longer. This is a great movie and a collectors item maybe a little overrated but still worth buying. I guess i didn't really watch it the first time

5 out of 5 stars THE BASICS OF WING CHUN KUNG FU.......2006-08-07

back in the early 1980's high speed action was 1st introduced and the one who took advantage of it was sammo hung who directed this epic masterpiece and yuen woo ping and others converted over as well. this movie shows the speed, rhythm, power and grace of wing chun kung with absolutely NO WIRE AND ROPE STUNTS. its stars yuen biao, sammo hung, lam ching ying, peter chan lung, frankie chan, lee hoi sang, wei pai, and james tien along with dick wei and chung fat. now lam ching ying steals the show and yuen biao anf frankie chan performed exceptionally well, but yuen biao did a poor job of faking his kung fu because its obvious he's a master at his craft haha. fox releases of hong kong action films are the best up to date. digitally remastered sound and picture with cantonese and english audio and subtitles. so pick this up it is like i said a definite epic masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent Movie.......2006-07-11

This has to be the best Wing Chun movie around. I really enjoyed it. Note: Not for the faint of heart !

3 out of 5 stars Old "Skool" Kung Fu!!.......2006-06-10

My second flick with Yuen Biao, ( Knockabout) and he's o.k!! I enjoyed this one,,,however, I think this flick is grossly over rated!!After really all the great reviews and seeing all the 4 and 5 stars, I was sufficiently convinced it has to be a gem,,,I duly dissagree with that synopsis!! However, it's an acceptable old school kung fu performance,,,the dvd transfer amazing! However, it was Sammo Hung who sold this one for me!!

5 out of 5 stars One of King Hu's masterpieces.......2006-09-22

Sublime and sprawling, A TOUCH OF ZEN is perhaps the greatest in King Hu's series of ground-breaking, metaphysical period dramas.

Vaguely, A TOUCH OF ZEN is a martial arts film, and it's greatest influence was on other HK martial arts films (and later international crossovers like CROUCHING TIGER, HERO and HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS). But it approaches being martial arts as Tarkovsky would have done it - the film is set up in three methodically paced, long sections (it's a 3 hour film), which all feature a bit of action but devote more attention to character, landscape and narrative. The focus of each section falls upon different characters, with the central character in each section embodying different virtues: the humility and creativity of the artist (the focus of the first act), courage and confidence in the second act, and an assured enlightenment in the third. The three acts are linked by tightly controlled and far more explosive bursts of action in an otherwise meditatively paced film.

Hu explores other elements as well - the first act, centered around the artist, eases viewers into the framework of intrigues that will shape the plot; this section of the film is very slow, but in hypnotic (and definitely not dull) fashion, with an abundance of careful set detail and some rather astounding landscape photography. Here, palace intrigues and suggestions of the supernatural (A TOUCH OF ZEN is loosely adapted from a number of Pu Songling's stories, collected in "Strange Tales From A Chinese Studio") drive the slowly coalescing plot. Intriguingly, the ghost story elements explore early in the film are satirized a bit later, adding a discrete layer of obtuse irony and genre commentary to the overall proceedings.

Gradually shifting into a second act, which moves the focus to an imperial fugitive (Yang Huizhen) who is being tracked in the area. Here another of Hu's advances surfaces - Hu had a knack for creating strong and complex woman characters, and the fugitive seen here is one of the most memorable; definitely a touchstone for Ang Lee.

A TOUCH OF ZEN is divided (on the DVD - more on this later) into two parts, and this 'second act' falls on either side of this division. A semi-famous, and much imitated, action sequence is to be found here.

During the third act, the focus shifts again, to a group of monks that make a brief but memorable appearance earlier, and - as the level of action gradually rises, so does the level of mysticality, with Hu's complex and highly personal take on Buddhism recalling Andrei Tarkovsky's similarly mystical and oblique Christianity.

Throughout, we have Hu's sense of humor, a sort of greatly modified slapstick providing extra charm - the very playful sense of humor would seem to be a strange addition, but it somehow works, giving an otherwise slow, meditiative film a breezy sense of rhythm. Again, I would point out the influence of Pu Songling (perhaps upon Hu's entire body of work); Songling's work - a classic of Chinese literature, blends spiritualism, surrealism, humor, political intrigues, horror and hints of the erotic - and Hu is unafraid of blending these seemingly disparate qualities into a vast, and sublime, cinematic endeavor.

This is a beautifully shot film, on my personal short list of the most gorgeous ever, and the US/R1 DVD does present A TOUCH OF ZEN in all of its' widescreen glory. Unfortunately, the film seems to be otherwise unrestored, with an indistinct print and several spots of faded colors distracting from some exquisite compositions and landscape shots of a variety that would've made John Ford jealous (with at least one explicit visual reference to Kurosawa as well). I would hope to see a fully cleaned-up DVD available at some point in the hopefully not-too-distant future.

But - grainy DVD or not - this is something every cinephile out there should see.

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLE, ELEGANT MIX OF CHINESE PHILOSOPHY, INCREDIBLE UNSPOILED SCENERY AND ACTION.......2006-07-24

In the first ten minutes I thought it was just okay;
then it did nothing but get better for the next 177 minutes. Director King Hu was a visionary;no wonder so many contemporary movies have explicitly and liberally lifted his ideas.

Unlike so many martial arts' movies, character reigns;
the plot is intricate, evolving and and motivates the action.
And the natural locations make me want to take a very long walk around China. A feeling of reality and naturalness prevails in every scene.

If you buy this, and you should, read the bio of King Hu Jing-Chaun; amazing what he's done and the lasting impact of his work. His genius really shines in Touch of Zen.

1 out of 5 stars Idiocy to fast forward through.......2006-06-30

This movie is terrible. It is three hours of nonsense. The pacing is so slow that you have to make a lot of use of the fast forward button. The fight scenes are laughable. The fighters hop like bunnies. Every single fight scene in this film, and in almost every other oriental so-called kung fu film, is absolute worthless garbage. Fast forward through all the fight scenes, which means fast forward through most of the movie. Also fast forward through all the scenes where nothing is happening. That doesn't leave much. They have a 15 minute movie with 170 minutes to skip. And someone tell me why the two stars of the film look so Caucasian. Is that the Chinese ideal of beauty? In the movie they make fun of superstition and belief in ghosts, but at the end they give us a final shot of a godlike image, more superstition. The star is actually some magical Buddhist abbot. Gimme a break. The only good thing about this horse manure is that the leading lady is very cute. Other than that, I can't think of a reason to waste 3 hours on baloney. And for all the people who place this idiocy at the top of their all time movie list, I have to question your motives. Do you want to seem smart? Is it cool to recognize crap simply because it is from another country? That is an insult to all the truly great foreign films. Just cause it's foreign, doesn't mean it's worth a damn. Placing this trash on a par with the truly great foreign films simply because it is foreign is an insult to the great ones. This movie, pure and simple, is inferior. It makes me wonder if the Chinese movie audience has the taste of little children.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Time Magazine Top 100 Films.......2006-02-19

Included in the Time Magazine Best 100 Films of all time list, A Touch of Zen does not disappoint. Though it starts slowly, the momentum gradually increases until the viewer is completely caught up in the story of a refugee woman who seeks the help of two generals, disguised as common townfolk (one a blind man, the other a doctor), and a group of monks led by an abbot whose spiritual strength is expressed in his ability to thwart violence and defeat evil based on deflecting the advances of his enemy and using that deflection to repel whoever attacks.

This mystical bent is strong in the film and lends it some real juice. Also on hand is a poor artist who lives with his mother, a spy who wishes the artist to draw his portrait, the evil eunuch Hsu, a whole bunch of guards/soldiers in service to both Hsu and his "boss" Wei (the equally evil ruler), Mun-Ta (another bad guy), the town magistrate, and, of course, the artist's mother who's on hand for comic relief and as well to provide a touch of humanism to A Touch of Zen. The bad guys had previously tortured and murdered the refugee woman's father and are now out to finish her off, as well as the two generals who have sided with her.

A clear inspiration for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon--as many others have noted--this film boasts quite a few martial arts fights (mainly with swords) and quite a few flying leaps. It's also nice to see that a good looking woman, the refugee, is so adept at martial arts herself--women's lib had apparently hit China before it got to the US!!

This is a three hour film, broken into two parts, so there is actually an opening credit sequence for the second part of the film exactly like the first part sequence and a short (two-minute) recap of the last scene from the first part at the beginning of the second part. In addition, the image is somewhat muddy at times. In spite of these drawbacks (hence the four stars instead of five), this deservedly is part of the Time Magazine Top 100 Film List; it's a gripping story with great visuals and nary a false note anywhere.

Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars I wish I'd seen it 25 years ago.......2006-01-12

I first heard of A Touch of Zen when it made the run of the art houses in London in the early 80s. I desperately wanted to see it, but by the time I had a free afternoon, it was already gone. Since then, I've been waiting anxiously for it to show up, first in repertory cinemas, then on VHS, and then on DVD.

Needless to say I was thrilled to see that the film was finally available on DVD. I got a copy as soon as I was able, popped it in the DVD changer, and settled back to watch. Two hours later, somewhat dejected, I found myself wondering whether I really wanted to continue watching this film, since its only remaining appeal to me was as a film history exercise.

All of this film's strong points are visual, and each visual technique has been done better in later films. It's interesting to see where some of these techniques originated (though some of my Chinese friends dispute whether the techniques were original even at the time), but unlike other films with pioneering visual styles (e.g. "The Seven Samurai" or "Zu: Warriors of the Magic Mountain"), the plot and characters just don't justify sitting through the whole thing.

Also, the film is often too self-consciously artistic, and definitely too long (or at least too slow-paced)... Though that could just be me, I suppose; I also thought "House of Flying Daggers" was too long and slow. (In my defense, I did like "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" and "Hero", and I absolutely love all 208 minutes of "The Seven Samurai").

I don't think this film was overrated at the time it came out, but its value was entirely in its innovation, and not in the plot, characters, or even the action. As a result, it just doesn't hold up compared to all that followed.

The Mr. Vampire films of the 1980s may be the most familiar examples of a unique Hong Kong subgenre, the knockabout horror comedy. But here, as elsewhere, the true pioneer turns out to be the Fat Dragon, Sammo Hung. He worked out all the basic moves (sticky rice as a ghost repellent; the frantic use of spells scribbled on slips of paper) in this 1980 ghost farce. It's a fancy-dress period film in which a gang of clowns, pretending to be spooks in order to terrorize each other, inadvertently invoke the real thing. Pretty soon everyone in sight (including Sammo's foxy but unfaithful wife) is conjuring up a hopping corpse or a nasty poltergeist, and a supernatural traffic jam ensues. (The same basic idea was recycled, much less effectively, in 1982's The Dead and the Deadly.) Hung's world-class kung fu skills prove to be as well adapted to slapstick horseplay as to knockdown action, and in the best scenes they work both ways at once. In the finale, Hung fights off several attackers as his body is possessed by one ectoplasmic intruder after another, each with a distinct personality. Sammo is never more graceful than when he's pretending to be a clumsy oaf. --David Chute

3 out of 5 stars silliness abounds.......2007-05-07

Fortunately for the viewer, Sammo Hung is able to just barely rescue this film from oblivion. His always interesting martial arts is the highlight of this piecs of fluff.

1 out of 5 stars bad.......2007-03-23

On your website it was actually stated that it was acted by Alfred Cheung (Gui Meng Jiao) but after i have received the movie it was not.

So, i don't know how to rate.

1 out of 5 stars I can't believe I actually bought this.......2004-06-23

I don't know what's written on the english box, but on the DVD-box I have it says "Amazing 30 minutes ending fight", but as the movie ended I still haven't seen that fight yet... During the whole movie there were like 2-3 fights, only one of the worth watching...
I don't count the fights against the mummy for fights, since all he did was jump around avoiding the mummy

If you like to watch two sourceres (sp?) keep throwing fireballs at each other, this movie might be something for you, but if you're looking for just a little bit horror, comedy or martial arts, then go look somewhere else, since this movie contains none of those elements :(

Sammo Hung is among the best martial arts actors in the world, so I can't believe he would ever do something like this :(

2 out of 5 stars Encounters of the Boring Kind.........2004-06-22

Encounters of the Spooky Kind is Chinese Humorous Kung Fu comedy at its worst. Encounters features a repetitive plotline, uninteresting characters and a horrible long drawn out ending. I found this film tiresome rather than entertaining...

Sammo Hung stars as Courageous Cheung, a chunky 'everyman' whose beautiful wife is cheating on him with his own boss. When Cheung begins to suspect his wife's infidelity, the evil boss plans to kill Cheung, with somewhat humorous results.

When I checked out "Encounters" I expected it to be humor along the line of the Mr. Vampire series. Instead we get cheesy comedy with a lot of 'unfunny' scenes and terrible makeup. If you like characters with cheesy makeup and fake corpses crawling with maggots this is the film for you. If not, I'd skip this film and watch the first of the Mr. Vampire series. At least Mr. Vampire actually succeeds at being funny.

5 out of 5 stars I swear this is the best movie ever !!!!!.......2004-06-12

Man!!!!This movie blew me away when i first saw it, just everything about it from start to finish it's just insane.
I thought when I saw it the first time I would just put it with my other dvd's. But it only got better with the second viewing.
This is the movie that made realize that Sammo Hung is the s***.
That's not to say that I did'nt know he was before, but this only solidifies it.I remember seeing a clip of this movie when i was little, ever since i've been looking for it but i did'nt know the name of it. Now that i've found it and i'm never lettin' it go. I miss movies like this, very inventive, great choreography I SAID IT BEFORE I'LL SAY IT AGAIN SAMMO HUNG IS THE BEST .But anyway like everyone else said the ending is just crazy.
Crazy in a good way, I dare anybody, genre fan or not to watch this movie and not like it. You show the person who does'nt like
this movie even a little i'll show you a freakin' psycho.
It don't get better than this. I've got nothin' else to say I love it. By the way is there anybody out there that wants to talk kung fu with me please let me know. I'm at (...)
Peace.

4 out of 5 stars Fox/Fortune Star gives us teh movie with great picture quality, good sound, and widescreened.......2006-06-10

The movie starts out with a really cool scene showing the destruction of the Shaolin Temple. Look for a quick cameo by Wilson Tong. Sammo is in a cool role as like a general. His buckteeth look a bit stupid but his fighting doesn't. THIS IS A DORIAN TAN MOVE but Jackie Chan is great in his small role as a man looking to help out Tan take care of the villian played by james Tien. The story is not going to go down as one of the best ever told. A swordsman comes to help them out and they take down the evil guys. The thing that really stood out is Jackie playing a serious role. He does it very well and his fight with a spear was awesome. Sammo and Dorian Tan have a good fight. Really good fighting all around. The final fight is not spectacular but James Tien puts on a good performance.

The DVD is great. Widecreened, great picture quality, and dual language tracks. Just about all that you could ask for.

4 out of 5 stars John Woo's pre gun era good movie bad kung fu movie.......2005-11-07

This is a pre 1986 John Woo film. He wrote it and directed it it is a good movie. It has a good plot. It is a realy slow moving film action wise. The charactors are very well thought out and planned and the story is realy good but it is a kong fu movie with a lot of acton sceens. It's not meant to be a film just on the basis of plot and story. The action sceens are a staple of what this film is as a period martial arts film. Believe me I love movies with that are period films that aren't martal arts films in hong kong but they don't need to be based on the sole idea of reveange. They are sopposed to be a certan way. I finaly got used to this film and I do like it. But there is no reason why the action sceens should be this slow paced Samo Hung is tha acton director after all. I think that John Woo must have wanted the acton sceens this slow paced but for what reason I do not know. Even the stars of the movie in "count down in kung fu" also called head of death by golden harvest in the original english dub. Tao-liang Tan was the lead and I have seen him do crazy insane stunts but in this movie it was very slow and tame. See it for youself! To you it may be good it may not!

4 out of 5 stars Early John Woo, Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung Movie.......2005-06-08

1976 R-rated Chinese Kung Fu Film (widescreen). Also known as "Countdown in Kung Fu," "Shao Lin men," "Shaolin Men," and "Strike of Death." Contains brief nudity. (Note: the Manchu (or Qing) were the rulers of China when the "Westerners" arrived and were the last Imperial rulers. As they ruled from 1644 until 1911, and had many rebellions to put down, it is unclear when the actions of the movie are supposed to occur).

DVD Features: The DVD contains the movie (in English and Mandarin, and with English subtitles), two trailers for the film (one original, one newly edited), and four other trailers (Spooky Encounters (Sammo Hung, ghost story); Legacy of Rage (Brandon Lee, rated R, modern era, prison movie?); Winners & Sinners (modern era, Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan); Warriors Two (R-rated; older era; Sammo Hung)).

Credits: John Woo ("The Killer", "Face/Off", "Paycheck"; or as the film credits him: Wu Yu-Sheng) wrote and directed this film. Sammo Hung ("Martial Law") provided the Action Direction (and acting, he is one of the Manchu officers (as Lord Du Ching)). The movie stars Tan Tao Liang (Yunfei; "Dual Flying Kicks"), James Tien (Commander Shih Xiaofeng; "Blade of Fury"), Jackie Chan (Tan Xiong; "Cannonball Run," "Rush Hour"), and Chang Chung (Wanderer the Swordsman or Master Sword; "Dragon Strike"). John Woo also appears as Scholar Cheng. (Note: These are the credits as they appear in the movie).

Plot: The Manchu (Qing) rule China, and have tried to take over the Shaolin martial arts. They failed, and now they have set out to destroy the Shaolin way. An ex-Shaolin (James Tien) works for the Manchu's to destroy the Shaolin way. A Shaolin disciple (Tan Tao Liang) fights back with the help of Jackie Chan (delivery man) and Chang Chung (swordsman). Meanwhile an anti-Qing revolution is underway.

Review: The English subtitles and the spoken English do not match up (though both are providing information not conveyed in the other medium), and the dubbing is distracting (the actual English isn't that bad, but hearing the English and watching the mouth movements is distracting). In a way, more than one movie is on the DVD. The spoken English version is not the same as the subtitled English (at one point Hung tells (spoken English) Liang that he likes him, while the subtitled English says something like how Liang is a fool and will die), and you can get a different movie by listening to the spoken English, or reading the subtitled English. I don't speak Mandarin, nor read it, so I don't know if the three different versions are different (two tracks are for different sound equipment, the third is the original soundtrack). After very brief testing, the Original Mandarin soundtrack is the track I listened to (seemed best in the limited test). The movie is shown in widescreen, and the English subtitles show up very well in white in the bottom black bar.

The music, by Joseph Koo, is impressive and provides the right complement to the movie. The martial arts action is impressive and well done (I'm divided on whether the fighting looks too staged or looks more realistic than the more "magical, flying" martial arts action of today).

It's interesting to see Jackie Chan so young (you can also see the young Jackie Chan in the 1981 US movie "Cannonball Run"; it should be stressed that neither Sammo Hung nor Jackie Chan are the main stars in this movie).

The fighting is quite impressive, the acting (as much as I can tell) is good, the music is great, the plot is solid (maybe slightly less than I would expect from John Woo, and more than I would expect from an early Kung Fu movie). At times the movie seems to be a Chinese version of the Magnificent Seven, though missing one or two people (not sure if I should count Zhang or not as he is someone they have to protect, instead of a fighter; the movie is very vaguely similar to the Western). Lovely countryside they run around in. Overall, I would give the movie 4.23 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Tan Tao Liang!!!.......2003-02-01

Great film, but a bit misrepresented. This is not a Jackie Chan movie. He is in the film, but by no means is he the star. Tan Tao Liang is the hero. Great villains. James Tien is so convincing with his mini blade. How does he spin that thing?!?!! This is also a rare opportunity to see Sammo Hung as an evil counterpart to Tien in the film. Tan Tao Liang kicks are amazing. This is a a great tale of heroism and patriotism. Sounds strange, but the English voice overs match perfectly with how the characters act. That can be a problem with many martial arts films. Make sure you get the Leg Fighters too!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting film but has its boring moments too.......2003-01-20

The action in this film was very continuous but when there was no action sequences it got kinda of boring. YOu can really see John Woo's style beginning to build up. He clearly is starting his signature characters where they start to bond with brotherhood sacrifice and friendship.

Best parts: Last fight scene was the climax of the film

1 out of 5 stars Old school collectors - beware!!!.......2006-05-29

This film is completely dreadful, the first challenge will be to stay awake throughtout the film; the second will be to wonder why on earth you wasted your money as the 'fighting' scenes are poor and bear no resemblance to the description on the case of the DVD. Look for a different film.

3 out of 5 stars I love the old school kung fu period, this aint it!!.......2006-04-19

Unfortunately this movie was not what it suppose to be. According to the plot, it was one brother trying to find and kill his other brother, after being caught attempting to rape is sister in law. However, this movie was quite different,,it turned out to be some killer cop, hunting down some gold robbers,,chopping there heads off one at a time. However, don't get me wrong, I'm not into swords play, but this was not bad, especially the final 5 mins. I just like to get what I buy seen!!!

5 out of 5 stars does anyone review these types of movies? Or do they just write, no kungfu, swordplay, and bad, 1/5.......2006-03-08

I have a review on this movieunder the real name of it. Killer Constable. The movie stars Chen Kuan Tai(star of orinal movie called iron monkey). He plays a constable who has to catch the 5 robbers who stole I think 2 million taels of gold, and recover the gold. In the prcess of recovery he meets Ku feng and Jason Pai Pao. Certainly not one of the better kungfu movies(though the ending is FREAKING SWEET), the swordplay is a little sloppy and Chen Kuan Tai may not be the greatest swordsman, but he is one hell of an actor. The dubbing is of course in english and the version I have is full screen and only about 90 min., but it still manages to be one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. Now that may be an opinion, but the fact is that this is the darkest movie that I have ever viewed. By the end of the movie, killer constable ends up being my favorite character in cinema history. Not that I liked him as a person that much, I loved the way he reacted to everything that happens to him. When this guy makes a decision, even a tough one, there is absolutely no hesitation whatsoever. When he is asked by his friend to kill him because he is in so much pain, the constable doesn't try to talk him out of it, he kills him as he would anyone else, quick and hopefully forgettable. I could tell you something like killer constable has a hard heart but softens up at the end, that's called giving away the movie. So just go ahead and experience it yourself.

ALSO YES, THIS IS A SWORDPLAY MOVIE AND HAS LITTLE HAND TO HAND, BUT HOW THAT COULD DETRACT YOU FROM WATCHING THIS, THAT IS YOUR PROBLEM.

-Edited-

I have the red sun version and it is uncut:)

My favorite shaw brother movie ever, bettern than shaolin intruders, shaolin challenges ninja, and deadly matis.

Again, don't buy this expecting to see shaolin vs. lama type of action. Expect to see a great movie that only beats out avenging eagle in my personal opinion.

This movie does not have any kung-fu fighting!! Its all about sword fighting. If you're looking for real shaolin type kung-fu I suggest you look elsewhere. This is NOT kung-fu. I could only muster watching about three-quarters of the movie. Take my advice and don't waste your money on this crap. I guess you pay for what you get.

3 out of 5 stars Average on Plot, Acting, and Action.......2006-03-21

Some quick stats for fans of martial arts films. Body count: 3. Nude scenes: 0. Best death sequence: Bruce and master strangle a man by pulling on the ends of a cloth sash which they wrapped around his neck. Spoken dialogue dubbed over in English.

Blind Fist of Bruce is an entertaining romp featuring Bruce Li, who is probably the best-known and most talented of the Bruce Lee lookalikes. Li plays a young owner of a bank who has hired two kung-fu masters to teach him their arts. These "masters" are con men, and keep themselves employed by routinely hiring actors to try to rob Li's bank who then quickly retreat when Li uses the phony kung-fu methods taught to him. The jig is up, however, once some real thugs move into town and start causing trouble. Li's confidence is shattered after getting thrashed by the thugs, and he enlists the aid of a poor, blind street musician to teach him true kung-fu.

The acting in the movie is passable, although nothing spectacular. The characters are sufficiently developed to gain the viewer's interest. Good guys and bad guys behave appropriately to arouse some emotion from the viewer, which makes the movie easy to sit through between fight scenes.

The fight scenes themselves are somewhat lackluster: Although Li and master fight their way through villains group by group, rarely are there confrontations that involve more than one-on-one fights. Rather, the villains usually take turns attacking Li or master one at a time, making for some less-than-impressive fights considering the number of people on-screen. However, staunch realists will appreciate that the action in the movie is all skill, and little to no special effects. The fights involve realistic kung-fu, and are not visibly sped up or altered, which adds much to their credibility. The choreography, though less than stellar, proceeds at a respectable pace and is sufficiently varied to keep the viewer's interest. Additionally, a few fights involve the use of butterfly swords, which are weapons not commonly seen in martial arts films.

In all, this film is average across the board. Three stars for the acting, three for the plot, and three for the action makes Blind Fist an entirely watchable movie. Though not likely to become one of your favorites, this film is definitely worth a try.

To get extra mileage out of the film, I highly recommend that you pick up Kung Faux vol. 1 as well. Kung Faux is a hip-hop comedy series which features classic kung-fu films that have been remixed and voiced over (similar to Kung Pao: Enter the Fist). One of the episodes features a remixed version of Blind Fist of Bruce, and is hilarious--Definitely not to be missed!

4 out of 5 stars MAYBE I BEEN WATCHING THE WRONG BRUCE LI MOVIES!.......2004-08-20

A NOT SO GOOD MARTIAL ARTIST [BRUCE LI] IS TAUGHT MARTIAL ARTS BY AN OLD BLIND MAN. MAYBE I BEEN WATCHING THE WRONG BRUCE LI MOVIES! I USED TO HATE THIS GUY A LOT AND I USED TO THINK THAT THIS GUY WAS WORTHLESS, BUT AFTER SEEING THIS AND ESPECIALLY AFTER SEEING ''BRUCE LEE; THE MAN, THE MYTH'', I TEND TO NOW THINK THIS MAN IS COOL! THE MOVIE HAS PLENTY OF GOOD ACTION PACKED FIGHT SCENES AND IT'S NEVER BORING. BUT, THE DUBBING IS BAD [WHICH IS ALL SO COMMON IN THESE TYPES OF MOVIES] AND THE PLOT COULD REALLY BE THICKENED A BIT. BUT OTHER THAN THAT, THIS WAS A NICE FUN OLD FASHIONED MARTIAL ARTS FLICK. ALL MARTIAL ARTS FANS WILL DEFINITELY WANNA OWN THIS. AND AT A LOW PRICE LIKE THIS, YOU GOTTA GET THIS MOVIE. IT'S A GREAT BARGAIN.

3 out of 5 stars Nice Little Clone of DRUNKEN MASTER + PRODIGAL SON.......2004-02-29

BLIND FISTS OF BRUCE stars Bruce Li (real name Ho Chung Tao) whose most famous for being one of the Bruce-Lee-Alikes, actors directed to imitate the legendary Bruce Lee in strings of low budget films patterned after his in the hopes of cashing in on his popularity after he died. Bruce Li is probably the best of the bunch in that he not only possesses above average martial arts skills, but he's also a pretty capable actor when not simply copying Bruce Lee's mannerisms (ie. the thumbing of the nose, the Muhammed Ali dancing, the tasting of his own blood after he's cut and spitting it out, the gritting of teeth followed by violent screams and bursts of action, etc.). In fact BLIND FISTS OF BRUCE shows that Bruce Li could be put to good use copying not only Bruce Lee's films but those of Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao as well for it's basic story is a combination of SNAKE IN THE EAGLE'S SHADOW and DRUNKEN MASTER (inept young man makes good via hard training), and PRODIGAL SON (rich young man gets taken advantage of via poor training).

The plot follows a young man whose hobby is kung fu. His teachers, however, are con artists rather than martial artists and in fact pay others to lose to Bruce's character (just like PRODIGAL SON). He finds the truth out the hard way as he gets beat up by a new thug in town who doesn't want to play by the rules. The two teachers ditch Bruce after this deciding it would be more to their advantage to kiss up to the thug whose bent on taking over the town. Bruce discovers that a blind old street musician (Simon Yuen, made famous by DRUNKEN MASTER) in town is really a kung fu expert and he pleads with the old master to teach him. The old man questions Bruce's motives at first refuses and refuses, but upon seeing Bruce's sincerity and determination to learn he changes his mind. A newly trained Bruce sets out for revenge and to rescue the town, but little does he know that the thug has a very powerful martial artist friend who in fact is the man responsible for his newfound teacher's loss of sight. Has Bruce's training prepared him for such a match? Find out in BLIND FISTS OF BRUCE!

Although this film clearly borrows a lot from the afore mentioned superior films, it still manages to be quite good. The characters evolve as the film goes on, and all of the action scenes (which are plentiful!) make logical sense. The training scenes are also a blast, especially those involving the two "fake" teachers who teach Bruce such useless, but foolishly fun to watch, styles such as cat and dog, and you actually get to see the hero use the techniques he learns as his fighting gradually improves throughout the duration of the film. This is one area where Bruce Li's acting ability shines. You really believe his character can't beat his opponents at the beginning of the film, but that he just might be able to by the end.

Though his fighting skill isn't as sharp as Bruce Lee's (though I don't know of many whose are!), Bruce Li is 100% competent in this film and garners a different kind of audience involvement than that generated by the real Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee's movie characters are always better fighters than his opponents and there's never any real question whether or not his superman skills will prevail. The audience reacts mainly to his screen charisma and his incomparable martial artistry. Bruce Li, on the otherhand, while perhaps less charismatic and less skillful a martial artist than his predecessor, is able to capture audience involvement through sympathy because the characters he plays, in some of his films such as this one, are allowed to progress and develop giving the audience a more human character to relate to and cheer for due to his flaws and his desires to overcome his weaknesses.

BLIND FISTS OF BRUCE presents some very nicely handled fight scenes (right from the start!) that arrive at frequent intervals and that, like the story itself, progress, both in length and display of skill. The villains are so vile (con artists, thiefs, rapists, murderers) that they help the fights have meaning, giving you someone to really root against.

The weakest part of the film, unfortunately, comes during the climax as Bruce Li and Simon Yuen team up against the most dangerous villain in the film. The choreographer here fails to capture Simon Yuen's strengths, which are his charisma and cleverness, and instead of creating a fight that utilizes those aspects he chooses to have the villain all to obviously slow down his movements to allow for Simon's lack of speed. This could have been avoided by using a more creative approach such as allowing the villain and Bruce Li to go at it full speed with Simon being positioned in the right place at the right time to deliver his blocks, ducks, and hits. This is a minor quibble, however, as Master Yuen still illicits so much charm and at many points does still get to showcase some nice movement for a man of his (or any) age.

I'd rate this as one of Bruce Li's best vehicles, and highly recommend it to fans of old school kung fu revenge flicks that contain ample doses of comedy and training sequences. (For fans of Bruce Li, I also HIGHLY recommend the film IRON DRAGON STRIKES BACK!)

4 out of 5 stars Good kung fu movie.......2002-10-16

I bought this movie because I'm constantly looking for Bruce Li movies. I have to say it's one of the best kung fu movies that Bruce Li stars in. The acting may be a little tongue-in-cheek, but the fight choreography is great. And Simon Yuen adds a little more autenticity to the film, starring as Bruce Li's blind teacher. This is a must for hardcore kung fu fans around.

5 out of 5 stars Old School Kung Fu!.......2001-12-26

Simon Yuen and Bruce Li team up in this classic chop sockey adventure. A great flick! Don't miss it at this low price.

4 out of 5 stars "Even if he was my own son, I'd still have to execute him".......2007-02-04

Lo Lieh leads an all star cast in this old school classic. When I say an all star cast I mean one of the best casts ever for an independent kung fu production.

The story is set in my favorite kind of atmosphere, the martial world. Unlike most wuxia movies, this film is mainly grounded and there is no flying around except for the occasional super jump.

Lo Lieh is the killer from above and is looking to take down every good fighter around so that he can reign as # 1. He has other purposes but killing people is all that matters at the beginning of these movies. It starts out like a lot of films set in the martial world where the main character is seen taking out many fighters. Wilson Tong, Robert Tai, and Wong Chi-Sang all have cameos in the first five minutes alone. A Shaolin abbot calls many people together to discuss how to hunt the predator, kill the killer. Carter Wong is there looking as tough as ever and just looking at him will give you shivers because of how threatening he seems. So he sends his assistant played by the great Lung Fei to let all people know that he has just put a bounty on Lo Lieh. Next we meet Chang Yi, one of the most majestic figures ever to hit the kung fu screen. He seems to be trying to rob Shaw Brothers actress Wong Ping and Lo lieh steps in to save the day. The next big star that we meet is Cliff Lok who you will know from all kinds of old school movies like 'Ring of Death' and 'Best of Shaolin Kung Fu'. Lok comes in and lights up the screen. For sure one of his better performances even if it is brief. After we get some plot out of the way that involves cool stuff like secret tunnels in dungeons, we finally get to see the tournament that they are talking about all movie. Don't expect 'Master of the Flying Guillotine' greatness but it is a great chance for Carter Wong to show off. The end of the movie is satisfying. I always enjoy it when they save the best fight scene for last.

The movie is full of deception and double crossing and it plays in perfectly to Lo Lieh's kind heart and the series of events his character goes through keeps the movie moving along at a nice pace. The story is a little bit better than average but there is plenty of good comedy from 2 bumbling idiots and the acting is GUARANTEED not to dissapoint. You can see I was not lying when I said it has an all star cast and Carter Wong is just so mean looking I have to recommend this movie to any old school fan. He was always good as a villian.

The fighting isn't the best you will ever see but it is far above average, especially for 1977. There are a couple times they use slow-mo and it only hurts the impact of the scene but they only do it a few times. All in all, if you want to see quality fights with Lo Lieh, Carter Wong, and Cliff Lok, this is worth a watch.

Directed by Joe Law who was a decent kung fu film maker, he just never did anything truly great. This movie gets a solid 4/5. His best work.

From Tai Seng's Martial Arts Theater line-up the movie is full screened with bad but watchable picture quality and I literally had to turn the sound up ALL of the way to hear it. Luckily level 100 on my TV was just loud enough so I could at least hear every word spoken. English dubbing is not bad but nothing great.

3 out of 5 stars Lo Leigh on the Hunt........2001-04-24

Lo Leigh stars as a renagade fighter, out for blood. On a mission to take out all bad doer's and bring back honor to his country. Good story, Good fight sequences, and ofcourse Lo Leigh

3 out of 5 stars Average kung fu movie with good directing.......2007-06-28

Chang Yi and Sammo Hung star as 2 high ranking government officials who are killing everyone who tries to resist the new government. Because of this Chang Yi is given a higher ranking. Carter Wong's family is killed at the start of the movie by Chang Yi and he goes to learn at Shaolin Temple. When he is grown up he leaves to take revenge. He finds out that Chang Yi has a daughter who is also looking for revenge because she was adopted by him after he killed her family. Polly Shang Kuan plays the daughter and at age 15 her parents were killed. She decided to learn kung fu from the enemy so that she could kill him one day.

My favorite part of the movie is when Polly Kuan explains why she is so mad at Carter for wanting to kill her adopted father. She feels she is the only one that should be able to kill him. This movie is very well directed, but unfortunately the kung fu is only average. It is not too bad for 1976, but the choreography just wasn't good enough for me. The graphic violence is the best part about the fights. Polly Kuan looks the best out of everyone and luckily the final fight doesn't disappoint. Chang Yi is one of the best villains in kung fu cinema history and is really good in his 5 minutes of action. The guy is pure evil.

The DVD from Xenon is surprisingly not bad. Picture quality is decent and the badly translated subtitles are easy to read. Best of all it is pefectly widescreened.

4 out of 5 stars Old "Skool" Kung Fu!!.......2006-07-11

I though this flick really high-lighted the brilliant performance by the great Carter Wong,,,I though this flick was truly entertaining and a pleasure to watch. A fantastic addition for the collection.....the choreography and cinematography well placed, and nicely put together!!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention,,I noticed Sammo Hung's name as part of the cast (Staring0,,I did not see him anywhere in this movie, perhaps an over-sight on my part,,but I'm confident if he existed in the flick,I would have noticed him,,as he's one of my favourite old school performer. Needless to say, Sammo Hung not bein g the most transparent, did not take anything away from this old school kicker,,you will be entertained!!

4 out of 5 stars An Unkown Classic.......2003-01-11

Shaolin Traitorous is a well made film with a very good cast. The main characters in the film are played by Carter Wong, Polly Shang Kwan, Chang Yi, and Sammo Hung. Their fight scenes are very well done, and their acting in this film is also very good. This is one of the better films that Polly Shang Kwan has starred in, and she stands out as one of the better actors and martial artists in the film. The film's cinematography is excellent, especially in the outdoor scenes, and this high quality widescreen version lets the viewer enjoy it.

The plot consists of a young boy (Carter Wong) who sees his family killed by government officials (Chang Yi & Sammo Hung). The boy enters the Shaolin Temple to learn kungfu in order to get revenge, and when he is grown up, he sets out to do so. Polly Shang Kwan plays the adopted daughter of Chang Yi's character.

The fight scenes were well choreographed, especially Carter Wong's and Polly Shang Kwan's, and well executed also. These two actors were very good in this film. Sammo Hung is very young in this film, and one of the highlights of the film is a weapons fight in the mountains in the middle of the film, between him and Carter Wong. The fight scenes, like the rest of the film, were filmed very well, using a mix of hand held camera and tripod shots, and also a mix of close ups and long shots, and nothing ever went out of the frame. The sets as well as the outdoor settings were very good, giving the film an excellent backdrop. The only things I didn not like about the film were the corny fighting formations of the villain's hechmen, and the overly dramatic deaths. I would say this is a generally well made film, and this is a high quality VHS version.

4 out of 5 stars Good quality edition of an unsung kung fu masterwork.......2001-10-10

SHAOLIN TRAITOROUS (aka TRAITOROUS, 1976) is a well-produced kung fu film with excellent cinematography, location filming in Taiwan, clever fight choreography and a top-notch cast. Carter Wong (BORN INVINCIBLE) and Polly Shang Kwan (LADY WUTANG) play the hero and heroine while the villains are portrayed by Chang Yi (EAGLE'S CLAW) and a future star-director of the genre, Sammo Hung (MAGNIFICENT BUTCHER).

The plot is a standard revenge tale told in a concise manner that involves a boy witnessing his parents' murder at the hands of corrupt officials and growing up to achieve vengeance. The boy goes to Shaolin Temple to learn kung fu in a superb training sequence that ranks with some of the better-known Shaolin Temple scenes in kung fu cinema. By the time the boy has completed his training, he has grown up to be Carter Wong and soon sets out on his mission. He meets Polly Shang Kwan along the way and, after some initial antagonism, the two become allies and confront the villains.

The bad guys employ a particularly clever maneuver involving dozens of imperial guardsmen performing a variety of formations on cue (including standing on each other's shoulders, three men high) as Sammo Hung bangs out different drumbeats. Sammo and Carter engage in a particularly exciting bout against the backdrop of a mountainous landscape midway through the film.
The surprisingly high-quality VHS edition offers a pristine letter-boxed transfer in its original language (Mandarin) with English subtitles.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been a contender!.......2000-09-18

Carter Wong, Samo Hung, and a star studded martial arts cast added with a great story line full of hate , revenge, and lies. The only thing wrong with the movies was the fight scenes. A little to choppy, and the flow was not what you would expect from such classic stars. A must see for fans, but could have been much better. Should have been.

Description

This kung fu classic directed and starring Sammo Hung (Eastern Condors) finally made its long-awaited debut on DVD! Yuen Biao, in his first starring role, is Yipao, a conmen who learns superior kung fu from Koo, a old man he was trying to con. But when Yipao discovers that Koo is actually "The Fox", a murderous bandit, he must fight his own master for justice. Filled with absolutely knockout fight sequences and Yuen's trademark acrobatics, Knockabout is a fantastic kung fu comedy that will knock your socks off!

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite Sammo film .......2007-01-11

I finally got to see what everybody was talking about with this. A true kung fu classic and one of the best ever for sure.

Made around the same time as 'Drunken Master', this movie has that type of feel. It really feels like Yuen Woo-Ping made this movie with all the comedy and Sammo playing the old beggar who has outstanding kung fu skills, even the outdoor backround shots look the same. Then you have the average fights at the beginning and the way it steadily gets better and better. That is totally Woo-Ping! What sets this movie apart as a Sammo film is the storytelling. Funny and overall a good movie even without the kung fu. There are at least a couple of laugh out loud moments and the movie is just hilarious from beginning to end.

Yuen Biao has his first ever starring role and gets to show off his kung fu skills to the max. Leung Kar-Yan plays his brother and they are con-men who decided to try and con the wrong man. Meet Lau Kar Wing, Lau Kar Leung's brother. Lau Wing beats up the 2 and after they are beaten, they beg him to become his students. He agrees and this is where the movie starts. The action in the first 30 minutes of the movie is good but it really heats up when Lau Wing trains Biao and his brother. Of course after the 2 learn a little they go and show off their skills by getting in fights. I don't want to give away the plot because like I said, the story is very well done. The main plot point is not original(revenge) but Sammo shows up for the final fight and makes it very interesting. The best thing about this movie is that you have probably seen many movies with a bunch of great kung fu stars and then the movie just turns out to be average. This is not one of those. Lau Wing, Yuen Baio, Lee Hoi-San('36th Chamber of Shaolin'), and Sammo Hung are all in top form. Lau Wing uses a long smoking pipe to fight with and combined with the the snake fist this is one of the coolest things I have ever seen in a kung fu movie. Check out 'Deadly Mantis'(aka Shaolin Mantis) if you want to see more of the incedible Hung Gar master Lau Kar Wing in another great fighting performance. Leung Kar-Yan is one of my favorite stars of all time but he just doesn't compare to the other guys in this movie.

I also have to give special mention to Mars who was a co-star in Jackie Chan's 'Dragonlord' and was Jackie's top stuntman who also has a small role in a ton of Golden Harvest and other movies. I have never known Mars as an actual fighter but he has a great one-on-one fight in this.

Overall I can't give this movie enough praise. If you are a kung fu fan then this is one of those movies that you absolutely can't miss. 4.5/5 stars and if I have to choose I EASILY pick the 5 stars.

Also, I know a lot of people are huge fans of animal styles n movies and this does not dissapoint. Yuen Biao's monkey kung fu is right up there with Hsiao Hou in 'Mad Monkey Kung Fu' though it was actually the finale that involved juming rope that did it for me. Brilliant.

The Deltamac version has very good picture quality and is perfectly widescreened but the subtitles have major issues. Around 30% of the subtitles are left out and the movie will not make a while lot of sense if you have the Deltamac version though you will probably still enjoy the movie. I recommend the Fox/Fortune Star version since I have never had a problem with their subtitles. There is also a Hong Kong Legends release of this which has a few good special features.

4 out of 5 stars Old "skool" kunk fu.......2006-05-12

This flick is definately amount the top best performance,,Sammo Hung,,,the most impressive monkey style kung fu ever!! The comedy was greatly choreographed,,,,,and interestingly enough it really was funny!! The training alone was enough to give this flick a 4 star. This is the first flick where Leung Kar Yan is really funny,,,I always see him as a serious actor. The final fight scene was amazing,,,there is nothing like the monkey kung fu, only sammo and Yuen Biao could have pulled this one off!! The monkey kung fu is the most impressive, since crazy horse!!

5 out of 5 stars Knockabout is a great kung fu movie.......2006-03-17

I'm a big fan of kung fu movies. Not wire-fu movies so much. Hero wasn't my cup of tea, and I think Crouching Tiger would've been a hundred times better if they left out the flying stuff. Anyway, this is the type of movie for those who like Drunken Master, Odd Couple (w/ Sammo Hung), Ong-Bakand basically movies like that. No wires, just skills.
The fight scenes are very very cool, they focus on Monkey Kung Fu mostly, but they also have some Mantis and some others. I only have two complaints, and neither of them are that big of a deal. Every once in a while, the voices used in dubbing are really corny. And also they add in some monkey sound f/x that I could just do without. Otherwise this is great. The fight scenes are great, the story is great, the sound and dubbing is usually great. Any serious kung fu movie fan should definately have this movie in their collection.

2 out of 5 stars Iffy Movie at best........2006-03-13

Seemed like it was probably early in Yuen Baio's career. The fighting was very slow paced and measured... The story was pretty decent I guess, but the acting was really bad. That being said, the story really isn't capable of driving this movie. If you put the fights in fast forward it's a good watch.

4 out of 5 stars Funny kon fu almost anime like.......2005-08-28

This movie you have to wachet with eyes of a children and you will enjoy it allot, the kun fu is good but i think is more of a comedy than a kUn fu movie.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad at all.......2005-04-22

Ok remember this review is written on the old school kung fu movie scale.

Basically there's a cart driver who steals money from bandits to buy his girlfriend out of prostitution. A pretty unique plot for this genre.

The fighting in this movie is great, and Angela Mao, as always, is a joy to watch. Lo Lieh is the quintessential kungfu villain.

Worth checking out if you're a fan of this genre.
