Languages: o English (Dolby Digital 2.0) Synopsis: An ego-maniacal, manipulative, man uses a young gigolo to enact the fantasies he is too sick to perform in this thriller set in a hotel penthouse on the French Riviera. Chris is the young Dutch gigolo who preys on wealthy older women at the hotel. Glover the wealthy, wheelchair bound gent who lives in the hotel's top floor suite. Chris, thinking he killed his last customer while haggling for money, bursts into Glover's suite to hide. The old man not only lets Chris stay in the spare room, he also wines, dines, and supplies a series of beautiful call girls to the young man. It is only later that Chris discovers that his "benefactor" is video-taping his sexploits. Appalled, Chris wants to leave. Glover makes him a new offer: he will pay Chris an incredible amount of money to find a beautiful woman and kill her. Chris agrees and chooses Helen, who works in a perfumery. Helen is lucky, figures it out, and thwarts Chris, but when she must deal with Glover, her luck runs out. As the credits roll, the song "Sweet Sixteen" is played. "Suite 16" has always been a personal favorite of mine. Mostly due to the excellent performances of Pete Postlethwaite & Antonie Kamerling, this gripping drama in psychological and physical control has all the right ingredients to get right under your skin like a bad case of flesh eating bacteria!

Summary:
After an argument and fight with a wealthy one night stand in a posh hotel, young hustler Chris finds himself trapped inside. With nowhere to go and the cops closing in on the hotel fast, he wanders in "Suite 16" in a fit of despair. Inside, a handicapped and wheelchair bound Glover (Pete Postlethwaite) is held captive for the evening once discovered by Chris.

However, things change the next day when Glover informs Chris that the women he slept with is now dead; and that he surely will be sought out for her murder. Lonely and bored, Glover offers to shelter Chris for awhile while the cuts and bruises from the previous nights escapades have time to heal.

Without much of a choice, Chris agrees......and our tale of twisted indulgence begins.

Doting on the boy with his money, Glover feeds Chris, offers him up plenty of booze and cocaine...and lavishes him with hookers at his whim to meet his every sexual desire.

All the while Chris treats Glover like a handicapped gimp, verbally insulting and abusing him during the process. After Chris realizes that his sexual encounters are being taped and watched by Glover in the next room....Chris threatens to leave, much to Glovers dismay.

So Glover makes a deal with Chris--he will pay him to stay and be his own personal porn star--while he watches every encounter from the room afar. Since Chris has dreams of starting his own club in the Carribbean, this offer sounds to good to be true....and he gladly accepts.

However, Glovers demands on what he would like Chris to do in the sack grow increasingly more disturbing, masochistic, and bizarre. Finally, after having enough Chris tries once again to leave.

But this time--Glover offers him ALL the money he will need for his club once he leaves- IF he performs just one sick and twisted act of murder for him.

Will Chris do it?

What will be the consequences of such a high stakes game of cat and mouse?

"Suite 16" is a very good movie with some heavy handed material. However, it is quite intriguing and compelling for mature audiences- and the chemistry of Glover and Chris is quite fascinating to watch as it develops throughout the film.

The DVD transfer isn't all that great (actually it sucks) - but as a viewer without heavy expectations on ratio aspect etc...the annoyance fades rather quickly.

All in all - if you can get your hands on it..stop in and check out "Suite 16".

Antonie Kamerling is GREAT as Chris. Every time I show this film I am told by the people present that they are completely taken by this film. It can be difficult to sit through bacause of the manipulative way Chris is treated... but it is a frightening look into shady characters of the under-world.... It`s daring... it`s haunting... it`s great...

How NOT to Transfer a Motion Picture Film to DVD!.......2002-03-21

The technicians who did the telecine work on this DVD product should be sent back to video school. Not only is the widescreen movie framed to 4:3 (cutting off the left and right sides), but the picture is "overscanned" (cutting off the top and bottom portions) as well. At least 30% of the widescreen frame cannot be seen--hiding some of the subtitles. For those movie lovers interested in an absorbing European erotic thriller, may I recommend the VHS form of "Suite 16" distributed in Canada by Norstar Entertainment/Malofilm. Their widescreen transfer is properly done. Perhaps these Canadians can produce the DVD product sometime soon.
Note: There are at least three different "cuts" of this film: 106 minutes (European version), 98 minutes (Canada R-rated version), 93 minutes (U.S. R-rated version).

techincal problems.......2001-03-06

I found it hard to watch. The movie is in a language other than English which comes as no surprise. The problem is that the subtitles are partially cut off in the lower half of the second line of dialogue. It was too difficult to determine what was happening since I don't speak the language and the subtitles were largely illegiable. I never finished the movie. This applies to the DVD version

EXCELLENT MOVIE.......1999-08-05

One of the best movies I've ever seen! and it's not because of the erotic content, it's because it is a smart movie for smart audiences. Pete Postlethwaite Glover plays an awesome role: Calm and to the point. Great film with a twisted plot and the ending is just...well, you have to see it!
