Ranked at No. 30 on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 all-time greatest American films, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is a genuine masterpiece that was, ironically, a box-office failure when released in 1948. At that time audiences didn't accept Humphrey Bogart in a role that was intentionally unappealing, but time has proven this to be one of Bogart's very best performances. It's a grand adventure and a superior character study built around the timeless themes of greed and moral corruption. As adapted by writer-director John Huston (from a novel by enigmatic author B. Traven) it became a definitive treatment of fate and futility in the obsessive pursuit of wealth. Bogart plays Fred C. Dobbs, a down-and-out wage-worker in Mexico who stakes his meager earnings on a gold-prospecting expedition to the Sierra mountains. He's joined by a grizzled old prospector (Walter Huston, the director's father) and a young, no-nonsense partner (Tim Holt), and when they strike a rich vein of gold, the movie becomes an observant study of wretched human behavior. Bogart is fiercely intense as his character grows increasingly paranoid and violent; Huston offers a compelling contrast as a weathered miner who's seen how gold can turn men into monsters.

From its lively opening scenes (featuring young Robert Blake as a boy selling lottery tickets) to its final, devastating image of fateful irony, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre tells an unforgettable story of tragedy and truth. With dialogue that has been etched into the cultural consciousness (who can forget the Mexican bandit who snarls "I don't have to show you any stinking badges!") and well-earned Oscars for John and Walter Huston, this is an American classic that still packs a punch. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Brings back old memories.......2007-05-07

What a treat to see this old war horse. As was typical of this period the acting was a little over the top, especially Bogart but was entertaining nonetheless. Has some really good extras...well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest movies of all time..........2007-05-03

I can't tell you how many times I've watched this movie, and I can't tell you how many more times I will watch it. If movies were food, this movie would be a first class 9 course meal at the best 5 star restaurant in town. If you have never seen this movie, you have missed out on a rare glimpse into GOLD FEVER. You think it can't happen to you...better men have thought it and died. Watch men trade their souls for Gold, and see what happens to the Godless. Truely a work of art, everyone should own.

3 out of 5 stars A Man's Film.......2007-05-03

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is a classic film starring one of the brightest stars of the era, Humphrey Bogart. Its themes are universal and timeless and the script features a line well known by the American culture. It follows three gold prospectors into the dirty desert where they mine tiny bits of gold. The threat of the elements, bandits, and each other slowly drive them apart and plant seeds of intense paranoia in their brains.

It might seem pretty stereotypical to deem this movie a "man's film," but really, that is what it is. The locations are far from beautiful, the actors are constantly unshaven and unclean, and the themes are about manhood. It isolates its audience, leaving women with little to relate to. I found it interesting in small sections but lacking as a whole.

This DVD release features an entire disk filled with extra features including documentaries, trailers, and other goodies.

I am sure that many people love this film and that it contains good acting, important themes, and great dialogue. However, my inability to relate to the events made it rather dull for me.

5 out of 5 stars A tale of greed, and redemption.......2007-04-05

This black and white classic tells a lesson in greed. Humphrey Bogart plays a street beggar in a border town of Mexico who believes he'd be satisfied with just a little money. He doesn't need a lot. This belief will be put to the full test when him and his two friends are able to scrape together enough money to set out gold digging. Bogart's character is humble toward his friends until they strike it rich, then it's 'gold fever' galore. Walter Huston won an Oscar for his role and John Huston won Academy Awards for writing and directing this film. The violence is low key, so it's really something the entire family could watch, especially since it's such a great moral tale on how real gold is found in friendships and family.

4 out of 5 stars A 3-and-one-half star edge-of-the-chair thriller.......2006-10-11

This UK-based ITC Productions 93-minute 1987 film fits comfortably in the same genre as "Above Suspicion" (Christopher Reeve), "Murder by Natural Causes" (Hal Holbrook), and "Death Trap" (Christopher Reeve and Michael Caine): not strictly murder mysteries, but close.

Non-working Donny (Jeff Fahey) isolates himself on a small Pacific-northwest island in an elaborate mansion inherited with sister Jill (Dinah Manoff) from the estate of their late rich parents. He is having terrible, repetitive flashback dreams of his Vietnam battlefield experiences which spill over into his waking hours. He also obsesses that wife Mara (Karen Allen) has unwholesome side interests in old flame Jake (Dean Paul Martin) - perhaps also part of Donny's post-traumatic stresses? Enterprising and money-conscious Mara, a local timber mill manager from the more deprived side of the social tracks, thinks Donny's mental state is deteriorating and attempts to deal with the situation as she deems best. Enter mysterious stranger Reed (Keith Carridine) who seems ready to fill any gaps that may develop; followed by Clinton James (Bernie Casey, Martian Chronicles' Spender) as the suspicious, nosy sheriff who gets involved when Jake disappears and things start snapping.

This tidy thriller has an engagingly convoluted plot; surprises even for the jaded; good British Columbia cinematography; fine acting and direction; realistic dialog; and a fairly good script (but with better reasons available, why did Mara return home during the night just because no one answered the phone?) With some ambiguities, this film is untainted by obvious Hollywood-style plot meddling, gratuitous sex and gore, and juvenility.

Originally filmed in Panavision, the unfortunate aspect ratio of this DVD is 4x3, though (remaining) picture and sound are fine. Hardly a profound masterpiece, but for the price, this entertaining film is nevertheless a pretty good buy.

5 out of 5 stars Hidden Gem.......2004-01-28

For anyone who enjoys a solid mystery with good, interesting characters, Backfire is the movie. Seemingly missed among mainstream movies, this one is a breath of fresh air when compared to the many lackluster, computerized movies Hollywood seems to produce today. Excellent movie with surprising ending.

    Product Description

In keeping with the most popular format of 1930s musicals, Bobby Breen stars as a precocious singing orphan in both of these films, adopted by a San Francisco fisherman in Fishermans Wharf (72 min.) and as a late plantation owners son in pre-Civil War Louisiana in Way Down South (61 min.). The latter film is notable for its unpretentious and enlightened views on the master-slave relationships in the 19th-century deep south, most strikingly because the film was made decades before the rise of the civil rights victories of the 60s. 1939/b&w/NR.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good........2002-04-23

I've always liked the idea of independent filmmaking. So many of the mega-corporate blockbusters constantly filling movie screens are such junk. The only problem is that a lot of independent movies are quite poor. They may have their heart in the right place but something always seems to ruin the movie. Inexperienced actors, poor direction, too tight of a budget.

Well, "Double Parked" is a wonderful surprise. It grabs you with characters who you really care about. Callie Thorne (Next Stop Wonderland) plays Rita, a single mother of one. Her son, Matt, is played by Rufus Read (Happiness). Matt's a good kid who is befriended by another student named Bret, played by Noah Fleiss (Joe The King).

Ten years ago, Rita escaped a violent relationship with Matt's father. Life's currently a bit of a struggle but things are going along okay. As it turns out, Matt's new friend Bret is actually also the son of Matt's father. They're half brothers. Matt is unaware of this and spends a lot of time at Bret's house. Bret is a petty criminal and drug user and he ends up slowly dragging Matt into his life on the edge. If it sounds like this might turn out to be a boring melodrama, it isn't.

I was amazed at how well the script was written. It's so painful watching a film where teens say things that they would never say in a million years. Stephen Kinsella doesn't encounter that problem. He presents to us a rather realistic world that some kids live in. It's chilling to see how abused kids such as Bret have very little morality. By the same token, however, the viewer never has any distaste for his character. Bret is believably presented to us as someone who is still good on a certain level and is only engaged in destructive behavior as a way of lashing out in anger.

The casting of this film is flawless. In addition to the three main actors, we are also treated to a couple of wonderful supporting performances. Eileen Gonzalez is priceless as Dolores, a co-worker of Rita's. She is given all of the funny lines in the film and she delivers them with style. Bret's girlfriend, DiDonna, is played by Cassandra Morris. I am saddened to see that this is her only acting credit. Cassandra makes her role as a teenaged criminal mastermind and drug pusher look effortless. She's so casual that it doesn't even look as if she is acting.

If you like a good independent film, or any good film for that matter, than check out "Double Parked". This is the type of movie that Hollywood should be producing more of.

        4 out of 5 stars Very,Very,Funny.......2003-06-22

I loved this movie. I thought it was so funny. I actually laughed out loud more than once. I didn't know what to expect when I started watching it. But, I am glad that I purchased it. It was worth buying. I am a huge Jason Priestly fan, that was one of the reasons why I bought the movie. I was not disappointed. It was great. I love the golf scene at the end. That was hysterical. I recommend this movie. It is light and airy. Not to serious. There are some touching scenes between the Father and Jason Priestly, that are nice. I like the guy who plays the Father. He was good. I like the whole cast, they all worked well together. I thought Peter Dobson was great. That guy says the funniest things. His facial expressions were great. Buy this movie, you won't be disappointed. I don't know why the guy at the bottom only gave it 1 star. It was better than that. I don't know what movie he was watching.

4 out of 5 stars Classic guy film!.......2003-05-03

It's a good movie for the male gender or gals who enjoy guy type movies..By that, I mean if you enjoy the movie Friday, Swingers or Mall Rats odds are you will like this movie. The viewer who rated this only one star below evidently has a problem with people who gamble. If this is you, dont buy this movie!...lol..Enjoy

        1 out of 5 stars a new citizen kane?.......2001-08-30

no. an etude on how to make a truly bad movie? yes. it does, however, have a great soundltrack, with lots of catchy, interesting tunes by some great unknown artists. other than that, it was one of the most painful viewing experiences of my life so far. to help you understand how truly horrible this movie is, it may be enough to point out that jason priestly appears as a valley-bred, slacker, compulsive-gambling jew with a dream to turn his life around with just one big score. so, please buy it, enjoy the songs, and join me as one of the proud few who has seen one of the worst movies ever made.
