        2 out of 5 stars Ouch.......2007-05-20

I considered using my standard Roger Corman introductory paragraph with "Watchers Reborn," since the House of Corman is the guiding force behind the increasingly banal Watchers films (this one is the third and final sequel), but I'm not going to take the easy way out. Instead, I want to elaborate on the Law of Diminishing Returns as it applies to movie sequels. Everyone acknowledges this law exists even if they don't overtly recognize it. As someone who's spent a great amount of time watching junk, I live and die by this law. I suspect the person responsible for first articulating this principle must have used the Watchers series as the its foundational basis. I can't think of any series of films, including the "Halloween" and "Friday the 13th" movies, which better fits the mold. A substandard, albeit entertaining, original film (based on a Dean Koontz novel of the same name) first hit movie screens back in the 1980s. It was a pretty decent b-movie extravaganza starring Michael Ironside and Corey Haim. As Louis XV used to say, "Apres moi, le deluge". After the first film, the sequels heralded disaster. "Watchers Reborn" represents the absolute nadir of this franchise. It stinks.

Once again, "Watchers Reborn" allows us to reenter the secretive world of the Outsider and his intelligent pooch partner. With the program failing miserably three previous times, you'd think the National Security Agency and Defense Department would abandon the project. Think again. Those wacky bureaucrats! They just can't give up on the idea that a genetically engineered beastie, linked psychically with a super-intelligent dog, will serve as an effective means to destroy our nation's enemies. A few thousand domestic corpses later, you'd figure they would get the idea that the program ISN'T WORKING! You'd also think the producers of this film would get the idea that the movies aren't working anymore, either. Wrong on both counts. In "Watchers Reborn," we see yet another scientist hard at work to turn the Outsider project around. This time it's Dr. Grace Hudson (Lisa Wilcox) pushing papers. She's working closely with the National Security Agency, presented to us in the form of the evil Lem Johnson (Stephen Macht), to make this sucker work. We know it won't work, of course, because if it did there wouldn't be much of a movie with which to waste our time. Sure enough, Einstein the super dog escapes from captivity, closely followed by the Outsider.

At this point, enter Los Angeles Police Detective Murphy (Luke Skywalker) and his partner Gus Brody (Gary Collins!). They move center stage while investigating an especially heinous murder caused either by A) a psycho with a really huge pair of gardening shears, or B) the Outsider. Wanna take a stab at the correct answer? Anyone? Bueller? Anyway, it's extremely telling that Einstein shows up at the crime scene. One thing leads to another, which includes Officer Brody's demise at the hands (paws?) of the Outsider. Detective Murphy must join forces with Dr. Hudson, Einstein, and The Force in an effort to expose this nefarious plot. The movie treats us to numerous scenes involving Einstein and Corey Haim...er, I mean Einstein and Marc Singer...darn it...I mean Einstein and Detective Murphy as the human figures out that Einstein is not some dumb dog but rather an intelligent canine involved in some secret project. It's the same stuff we've seen in the previous movies, only done with a lot less flair. The movie plods along until Hudson (now channeling Hansel and Gretel), Einstein, Murphy, and the Outsider battle the NSA pukes at some rural farmhouse.

Here are a few things I noticed about "Watchers Reborn". One, why is the lab containing the Outsider experiment located near Los Angeles? We've seen time and time again that this program poses a significant security risk to human beings, yet the government conducts the experiments right near a major metropolitan area teeming with potential victims along with a big media apparatus that would just love to break a story about a secretive genetics experiment involving animals. I'm surprised the lab isn't right next door to PETA headquarters. Two, Mark Hamill's career really went south after the "Star Wars" films. Most of us know this, of course, but "Watchers Reborn" really brings this fact home in an unpleasant manner. Hamill looks like a hangover in a suit as he lurches his way through this movie. Ouch. Three, the Outsider looks really cheesy. His look has deteriorated as the series progressed, but he's downright laughable in this outing. Four, "Watchers Reborn" proves, as if any additional evidence was necessary at this point, that Hollywood considers white guys in suits an evil hated by all forms of creation. The only thing missing here is an evil, greedy businessman. Five, and finally, the oranges. Pay attention to the oranges.

The House of Corman brings "Watchers Reborn" to DVD with lackluster results. Corman's always been one to work on the cheap, and his DVDs are no different. We see the movie in a full screen format with average audio quality. The only extras are three trailers for other Corman films: "When Eagles Strike," "Hope Ranch," and A Woman Hunted". I'm proud to say that I survived all of the Watchers films. I reviewed the first two all the way back in September 2004, almost three years ago, and now I'm done. What will I do with my time? I guess I can start working my way through all of those "Friday the 13th" and "Halloween" films. I suppose I could read the Koontz book that gave birth to these monstrosities. I could even rewatch the Watchers films even though only the first two really merit any serious attention. Nah! On to the next crop of cheap, cheesy, flicks that only a bad movie lover can love!

        2 out of 5 stars STILLBORN.......2004-07-31

Here's what's right with this movie:
        1. The dog who plays Einstein.
Here's what's wrong with this movie:
        1. The Outsider is obviously an actor in a monster suit and it harkens back to the days of inferior monster movies.
        2. Mark Hamill is woefully miscast and gives a performance that is unbelievably bad.
        3. There is no tension or suspense in the direction of John Carl Buechler, who also "created" the monster suit.
        4. Dean Koontz has not been very successful in the adaptations of his novels; he needs to find someone who can really get into and understand them a lot better.
        Final summary:
Read the book and forego this corker.

        5 out of 5 stars Awesom.......2000-12-30

I do not care what anyone says. This and the other Watchers movies before this rocked! I saw the movies first then read the book. Without a doubt Watchers Reborn is the best Watchers film. Do not listen to anyone about these movies. Go watch them even if you have read the book. Besides, I have never seen a movie that was exactly based on the book. Watchers is the best series ever!

        1 out of 5 stars BORING..........2000-09-19

HOW MANY TIMES ARE THEY GOING TO KILL OFF THE OUTSIDER? I THINK THEY OUGHT TO JUST STICK TO THE ORIGINAL AND MAKE IT A 4 TO 6 HOUR MOVIE WITH ALL THE DETAILS OF THE BOOK AND LEAVE OUT ALL THIS EXTRA GARBAGE.

1 out of 5 stars WATCHER ,PLEASE BE REBORN!.......2000-05-23

I'd seen thw previous film episodes, though I cannot understand why soo many spawn inferior sequel/prequel incarnations to a hit when this movie included falter on soo many levels. Mark Hamill starred in and co-produced what is a boring film from start to finnish and should be banished unless youre a fan of Mr Hamill's give it a rental viewing first before buying, dissapoitns more than one can say, JUDGE FOR SELF!

Anyone giving this anything lower than 3 stars is just plain stupid. The movie was very good. Don't listen to the mourons. Try this movie, you won't regret it.

1 out of 5 stars [For Watchers II] Who let this dog out?.......2006-02-19

Awful, just awful. I think it would have been just as awful if I hadn't read the book before I saw the movie and realized that it was butchered. Suspense in the book becomes boredom in the movie. Terror in the book becomes schlock in the movie. The Outsider looked like something created by a 1950s B-movie producer. All the best parts of human interaction are stripped out. Look, I know that a movie can't contain everything in the book, but still. Books can be significantly shortened and/or altered and yet still be great movies, like "Presumed Innocent" and "Patriot Games" (OK, so I'm a Harrison Ford fan -- so sue me). I guess the only thing that consoles me is that Mr. Koontz didn't write the screenplay, so I can still respect him.

And one other thing. I'm tired of being preached to by Hollywood liberals. One cannot purchase an MP5 or any other firearm on sight in California. The state has a 10-day waiting period for all firearms purchases and has had one for decades. See Cal. Penal Code 12071(b)(1)(3)(A) and 12072(c)(1).

1 out of 5 stars If you've read the book, don't watch the movie.......2005-10-28

I am a devout Dean Koontz fan, I bow to his decandence filled elegance. The first book I read from him was "The Bad Place" and I haven't looked back. This movie is a slap in the face to the man who has given so many incredible stories.

I am a fan of cheesey, B-horror moves (see original "Dawn of the Dead", but a teenaged Corey Haim as a 40 something ex-special ops man, get real. Trust me DO NOT READ BOOK FIRST!!! If you haven't read book, you'll probably enjoy this cheesefest. I would give this movie no stars, but Amazon won't let me.

Mr. Koontz, since you have more control over how you're books are translated now, I hope there is a time when you can pay correct homage to Furball.

3 out of 5 stars Dumb but well paced and fun.......2004-10-04

Based on the Dean Koonz novel, this is standard fun 80's horror. The concept of the two animal weapons is very inventive. An intelligent, genetically engineered golden retriever escapes from a military lab. Hunting him is the Oxcom, a curious baboon like monster(he actually looks for all the world like the title monsters from "Where the Wild Things Are"). The psychotic Oxcom is apparently tracking our lovable pooch by scent, and kills anyone who's in his path very efficiently. After all, he's a "combat mammal".
But wait! Yet another genetically altered killer here. A man played by Michael Ironside is tracking the beast as well, and killing all who come into contact with it(apparently for a govt clean up job).
Oh yeah, there's also Corey Please Give Me Work Haim as a teen who loves to feel up his girlfriend and cares for the dog. I don't know if this film was shot in Washington, New England, or maybe Canada, but it makes nice atmosphere.

The nasty italian lady's death was awesome.

            4 out of 5 stars C'mon, it's b-movie fun!.......2004-09-07

"Watchers" opens with an experiment gone horribly awry. The United States military, always up to no good according to Hollywood, came up with a really groovy way to rack up a high body count during a war. Panadyne, one of those secret Department of Defense research laboratories, developed two organic weapons systems. The first ingredient of the project is a dog, a very intelligent dog trained to roam enemy landscapes looking for soldiers and, one presumes, innocent civilians. Whoever finds the dog and befriends the creature is in for the shock of their life, though. You see, Panadyne also created a hideously twisted organism capable of wreaking bloody havoc in a big way. A telepathic link between the dog and this creature--called Oxcom--allows the creature and the dog to communicate. Moreover, Oxcom hates the dog with all of its being, and will do anything to track down the canine and destroy it. This hatred is in fact the primary motivation for the creature to act as a weapon of mass destruction. The opening sequences show us the inevitable; the dog and the creature escape from the laboratory and head out into the good old U.S. of A. looking for trouble.

Teenager Travis Cornell (Corey Haim) discovers the dog after fleeing from a covert meeting with his girlfriend. Immediately impressed with the canine's intelligence, Cornell takes the animal home even though his mother won't allow her son to keep pets in the house. As Travis blithely drives away, his girlfriend's father stumbles over Oxcom and perishes in a particularly horrible manner. The girlfriend escapes largely unharmed and summons the police to the farmhouse. An operative from the National Defense apparatus, Lem Johnson (Michael Ironside) and his partner, arrives on the scene looking to close up the potential security risks arising from the escape and subsequent killing. You can more or less imagine what follows for the rest of the film: Travis, his mother, and the dog soon flee from the ravaging Oxcom with Lem Johnson hot on their trail. Lots of gory murders take place as the creature kills everything in its march to the dog. The conclusion involves the obligatory violent showdown between Travis and the creature, with Lem Johnson revealing the requisite plot twist one always sees in these types of films. Oh, I almost forgot--Jason Priestley turns up to say hello as one of Travis's friends before falling under the bloody claws of Oxcom.

"Watchers II" is, surprisingly, not a total retread of the first film despite what others have said. On this outing, the weapons program involving the dog and the creature is still going strong, and once again a violent escape takes place. An army deserter named Paul Ferguson (Marc Singer) befriends the pooch after the creature kills the two MPs assigned to bring him in. Once again, the dog shows off its intelligence by managing to bring Paul into contact with animal psychologist Barbara White (Tracey Scoggins). With the help of the dog, Paul and Barbara figure out what's going on and make plans to destroy the vicious creature. Meanwhile, one of the doctors from the laboratory tracks down the creature and decides to take care of it out of a sense of misplaced love for his horrific creation. The conclusion to the film runs on and on for what feels like an eternity as Paul goes down into the sewer system in pursuit of the Oxcom creature.

I'm a bit surprised at the scorn heaped on these two movies. Both films are solid B budget efforts that do manage to entertain for a couple of hours. I've never read the Dean Koontz novel that gave birth to the "Watchers" franchise (there are two more sequels after the second entry), so perhaps that is why I can appreciate these films when others do not. Of the two films, I have to go with the first one as the better effort. It's fun to see Jason Priestley turned into ground beef by a slimy monster, and the gore effects are generous and look effective. Also, I'm a big Michael Ironside fan, so any film with him sneering and threatening is sure to grab my attention. The pitfalls of "Watchers" include Corey Haim at his smarmiest, and the increasingly goofy antics of the dog. I'll buy some of the tricks the pooch pulls off, but I was groaning with derision by the time the dog is typing out a message on a computer. But, and this is a big but, the dog is quite endearing and the movie makes you root for him almost from the get go.

"Watchers II" is classic B movie nirvana, a movie so pedestrian that you'll forget all about it five minutes after the credits roll. Yet the film does have a high point. Marc Singer possesses an amazing ability to act alongside animals. We saw him do it in "Beastmaster" and we see him do it here just as well. I always hear how actors can't stand to star opposite an animal because the critters take all the attention away from the human, but Singer doesn't seem to mind (insert your own joke here, please). He talks to the dog and responds to the animal's actions in such a way that you actually believe this pooch is a genius. Regrettably, Singer's skills with the beastie cannot rescue the film from lousy and sporadic gore effects, an incredibly ridiculous looking monster, and various creature feature clichés that hang over this picture like a cloud of doom. I recommend giving these two movies a shot if you're looking for something mindless to pass a few hours. As you should know by now, you could always do much, much worse.

            3 out of 5 stars Mildly interesting.......2005-03-31

When the first entry in the Watchers series--a series ever so loosely based on a Dean Koontz novel--offered up a teenage Corey Haim bantering with an intelligent dog named Einstein, I knew I had to sit up and take notice. Throw in a government weapons program gone horribly wrong, a flesh ripping monster run amok, and Michael Ironside in yet another turn as an evil dude--well, the bad movie lover in me began howling at the moon. Heck, the first film even had Jason Priestly torn to shreds by the aforementioned monster. What's not to love? Then came "Watchers 2," a movie that once again introduced us to an intelligent dog and a monstrous entity, lots of cheesy kills, and the unforgettable sight of Marc Singer acting opposite the dog. Yay! Actually, the Beastmaster did a pretty good job keeping a straight face as the increasingly ridiculous plot unfolded. "Watchers 3" carries on this grand tradition of schlock by bringing in low budget megastar Wings Hauser to battle the fabled weapons project now run amok three times in a row. Incredibly, there is a "Watchers 4" I have yet to see. Rest assured I'll view that one as soon as possible.

"Watchers 3" finds the satanic forces in the Pentagon up to their usual tricks. Not content with closing down a weapons program that resulted in untold deaths amongst the civilian population in the first two films, a gaggle of four star devils decides to reinitiate Project Aesop (as it's known in this film) in order to wreak havoc against a bunch of commie evildoers down in Central America. We see a bunch of Che Guevara wannabes sitting around a campfire sucking down a warm six pack of guava punch when a dog ambles into their midst. Awww! Isn't he a cute pooch! Even fellow travelers can't help but grin at the sight of a wagging tail. Unfortunately, this dog is the vanguard of Project Aesop, the smart dog that leads the deadly Outsider monster to its target. Sure enough, the grisly beast shows up a few minutes later and dispatches these Leninist stooges with extreme prejudice. The only survivors are the dog and a young boy (Ider Cifuentes Martin) who witnesses the horror but manages to not only hide but also keep the dog out of sight of the Outsider. You see, the Outsider follows the dog because his goal is to kill the dog and...oh, never mind. If you need an explanation just watch the first two movies. You're probably already familiar with the backstory if you're reading this review.

Anyway, the military wants Major Ferguson (Wings Hauser) to fly down to Central America and do something vaguely important...mop up operations or some such nonsense. Problem is, Ferguson is currently serving a stretch at Leavenworth and doesn't want to play nice. Predictably, the brass threatens him with an extended stay in the joint if he doesn't go. How he can refuse after that? Off goes Hauser with a team of "Dirty Dozen" type miscreants. There's obligatory black guy Nat (Daryl Roach), Vietnam veteran and all around jerk Bonetti (Gregory Scott Cummins), first to die MacCready (John K. Linton), and a curvy Latina guide named Gomez (Lolita Ronalds). The obvious group tensions pop up almost immediately, mostly bad tempers and endless hitting on Gomez, and then nothing much happens. These guys stomp around in the jungle for what feels like an eternity before stumbling over the boy and the smart dog. Ferguson, who was intimately involved in the Aesop project during one of its previous incarnations, immediately recognizes the pooch and just as immediately realizes the team is in real big trouble. The government has obviously set them up, and the rest of the film is a fight for survival against the relentless Outsider. Yawn.

"Watchers 3" screams "Predator" ripoff. The Latina guide, a military team fighting a monstrous entity in the deep jungle--it's all here. Except for, of course, Arnie, a big budget, and any charm the original "Predator" had. This is cheap, straight to video schlock without an ounce of originality. Wings Hauser is probably the best thing the movie has going for it, outside of the charming dog, and even he often has a look in his eyes like he's wondering whether the paycheck cleared at the bank. The supporting cast appropriately supports Hauser and the dog with as much personality as the concrete pylons supporting a raised freeway. They're only in the picture to act as cannon fodder and to pick up an easy screen credit, and they know it. My biggest problem with "Watchers 3" wasn't the lousy special effects--you'll find yourself looking for the zipper on the Outsider creature--nor did it have anything to do with the gore (which is quite good). Nope, I had problems with the plot holes, holes that were so huge you could feel your body jounce as the movie rolled over them. For example, why send Ferguson and the team to fight the Outsider when all the brass wanted to do was rid themselves of the one man who knew about the project outside of themselves? Why not just stage a helicopter crash over the ocean and be done with it? For that matter, why not have someone stick a shiv into Ferguson in prison? Because the script said so.

From the trailers included on the DVD, I'm assuming "Watchers 3" came from the company owned by the venerable Roger Corman. Previews for "Humanoids From the Deep," "Watchers 3," "The Unborn II," and "Not of this Earth" provide a welcome respite after suffering through this Predator knockoff. Seriously, if you like cheesy films you'll probably want to give this one a watch. Too, Wings Hauser completists (Is there such a thing?) will want to add this one to the stack.

            2 out of 5 stars Watchers 3 was a good idea........1998-12-31

Wathchers 3 was okay but it could have been much better. The Outsider looked sort of laim but it sure could kill. The idea of commandows being used as guinea pigs to test this new Outsider was appeling to me. The good people who made this movie should have tried to get a little more money so they could have made Wathchers 3 with better special affects. I'm sure that who ever has seen the movie would agree with me, but that's just my opinion. They should have tried to make the Outsider more creature like, and less human like. I mean, I know the Outsider is part human, but come on! When you see it you can tell it's some guy in a monster suit. Unlike the first 2 Watcher films, the Outsider looked more like a reptile instead of a mamal. Now that was a big improvment! But like I said before it still looked to human like. Maybe when people start appresheating movies like these, they will get more funding and they will be able to improve the quality of these types of films. If only wishes could come true. I like the way they killed the Outsider in the movie. I have to admit that I thought that was cool. Sometimes when watching the movie I wish that I wrote the story, and desinghed the Outsider. My favorit chracter was that loveible pooch, Einstine. That's what I like about the Watcher series, it focuses on to amazing creatures that are the product of gentic enginering. I think that they should make many more Wathcher movies, but I hope that they make the atempt to make Outsider more animal in apperence. If they wanted to make the Outsider reptilian like they should have made it look something like Godzilla(1998). Now that was a really, really awsome looking reptile! They should get some ideas from the big budget movies. Maybe if the big movie studeos see that the litle movie studeos appresiating them they mite help with the funding with movies like Watchers 3. Well that's all I have to say. Hope you liked my review.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting twist of horror........1998-12-14

Though not as good as the original, this film keeps you interested throughout. As is true in most cases the sequels are not quite as good as the original. The special effects in this second sequel to Watchers is average. I recommend this movie for rainy days.
