Magnum Opus.......2007-06-12

Without becoming breezy or overly sentimental, 'Mr. Holland's Opus' shows us the dilemma of many teachers. How does one juggle all of the piles of responsibility one is given, and how does one rise above the fray to achieve greatness? With many hurdles to overcome, Glenn Holland (in an extraordinary performance by Richard Dreyfuss) comes to Portland's Kennedy High School with the aspiration of employment filler with enough free time to compose his own music. Naive about the demands for extra-curriculars and student tutoring, Glenn, nevertheless, must reinvent the wheel and learn to accomodate his students by taking risks to win their love for music. Locking heads with the vice principal (played with perfect starchy officiousness by William Macy), he nearly loses his job and composure. At home his loving, understanding wife will stand by him, but plausibly loses patience when their own beloved son (who was born deaf) gets the shaft on some quality mentor time. Feeling his pain, we also are absorbed in the lives of key students (in fine early performances by Terrence Howard and [Forrest] Whitaker to name a couple). He gets reprieves with the football coach (Jay Thomas) who offers friendship and a spirited rivalry. With a rising starlet at his school and the soundtrack of their lives evolving to John Lennon, the poignancy of a man who has painted himself into a corner comes to roost.

'Mr. Holland's Opus' is as realistic as it is an emotional dead ringer. Admittedly, I prejudged this movie on the notion that it would be facile, cloying, or overly sentimental. Nothing could be further from the truth.

This movie was smash hit and got Drifus the oscar nomie for best actor. This movie was a smash hit back in 1996 making 83 milion in the United Statee and 103 million world wide. For those of you that loved Forest Gummp you will love this movie. This movie will always be the best Drifuss movie ever made of all time. If one teacher could effect that many kids. Then image what the natios of the world could do in real life. They could come together and put aside their petty differecnes and embrace there fellow man and women. I just have one thing to say God bless you Richard Drifus we need more people like you in these year of war aginst the middle east. Mr. Halland oppus show's the courage and purity that lies in the most seemingly difante of souls. That one man can change the lives of millions of people around him. If we can join together and work with each other instead of destroying and put each other down we can change the world and make it a place of peace for all nations. Christian, Jews, Araibs, Muyslins, Mormons, Japanse Athist everything inbetween from Hindu to Vodo. Together we can face overcome odds that would seem impossible to others. As the old song goes I quote"United we stand divide we fall". I recommend this movie for all ages. There is some mild language but that makes the movie even more phonimal and uplifting. This movie will be an utimate classic for decades to come. Mr Holland's Opus is a real tear jerk you will be laughing and crying at the same time. Mr. Holland's Opus is such a truly amazing movie! Its one of those movies that you first tune in to for the music, and then realize that it is an inspiring movie. The story of Glenn Holland, a fictional music teacher, who is ousted from his position after 30 years, is extremely touching. At first you don't want to like this man, who thought that he could write a symphony while teaching high school music, but you grow to love him as you see him interact with his students throughout the years. If you like Music of the Heart check out Mr. Holland's Opus.

Really BAD!!!.......2006-10-25

Ok, I am very tolerant of B-movies and find most movies that I watch to be very interesting. This one is very terrible. It makes no sense and doesn't have a story line. Even the acting is bad. I don't say that about many movies, but this one deserves it. Move on to a better movie.

MIXED UP.......2006-06-02

The ghost of cowboy legend Tom Mix and his cohorts are the spirits in this washed out mess. A young couple hoping to make it in Hollywood as screenwriters find themselves mixed up with a bunch of Hollywood types and ghosts to boot. Paula Ficara plays the girl, Rachel, who has a history of a mental breakdown; Stephen Wastell is Kevin, her sweet boyfriend who becomes quite different once he is possessed by the spirit of Tom Mix.
An interesting premise poorly executed and with virtually little scares or suspense. Another independent misfire.

One of the worst movies I've seen.......2006-04-07

The best part of this movie was the box. There were two or three pretty good, jump up whoa buddy moments but the thing looked like it was a high school film project. The story was okay, but the acting was a joke and there were a ton of unexplained situations. You are better off seeing any other movie out there (Except for Eyes Wide Shut, THE WORST MOVIE EVER).

The best thing about this movie is the case it came in. This is quite possibly the WORST movie I have ever seen. Don't get me wrong...I love some of the "B" rated movies from yester-year, they are classics....but this movie was just plain horrible. It looks like an eighth grader made it with his/hers parents video camera. This was the one and only time I ask my video store for a credit because the movie was unwatchable. I kept hoping it would get better...but it didn't, so I turned it off. Don't waste your money even renting it. It doesn't even deserve one star but since they didn't offer a zero I gave it a one.

then here is a little VERY low budget film that barely reaches the tolerable level for most, but for those who delight in over-the-top spoofs, it may just appeal. One wonders just how these 'Bollywood' spoofs escape criticism from the fine film makers that come out of India (Deepa Mehta's trilogy, for example), but then most of them are made in India and are actually throwbacks to the heyday cinematic musicals of the 1940s.

BOLLYWOOD AND VINE follows the contrived idea that a young Indian wannabe film maker named Bhuvan Bannerji (Jamey Schrick) drives a tourist bus into the Hollywood Hills where lives an old actress of horror movies, one Delilah Leigh (Skye Aubrey, the only professional actress in the film and one whose credits date back to 1967) who lives on poverty's edge with her gay son Devin (J.R. Jones). Delilah hasn't worked in years, lives as a recluse, and when Bhuvan mistakes Devin (in complete drag) for Delilah he leaves a script at her doorstep. A charade begins, with Bhuvan's bad script seems to be a ticket to money if Devin can convince him he is able to carry the role in Bhuvan's home of Bombay - a Bollywood movie. Delilah and Devin vie for stardom, Delilah locks the boys in the attic to nurture Devin's need for a relationship, Bhuvan rebels, attempts escape, and the trio become caught up in an accidental death of a snoopy wannabe star neighbor (Trish Dempsey). Of course they are caught and the ending just gets so silly that it is groanfully bad.

The saving grace of the film is that it doesn't take itself seriously. The script has some funny lines sparingly dropped here and there and the cast seems to be having a great time with the comedy. This is a tough film to classify: it has gay themes but very little in the way of gay plot - except for the camp. This is one of those 'loving hands at home' films that is somewhat salvaged by Skye Aubrey who clearly knows her craft! Grady Harp, October 06

A Filmatic Massacre.......2006-08-02

I have never written a review before; however, I have never felt compelled to do so. Whilst peregrinating through the aisles of a movie rental store in my home of Saint Louis, I noticed this motion picture. Upon reading the backside, I rented it. That was a mistake.

I am a person who loves artistic films; I also love films that promote a message regardless of whether I support that message. I also love dramatic movies. These predilections, however, do not prevent me from appreciating a comedy. Tagged as a comedy, however, this motion picture was absolutely terrible; it was completely boeotian in every respect.

First, the film was suffused by over-acting, which is one of the worst crimes that an actor or actress can commit. Yes, I confess that the two leading men are absolutely gorgeous; however, a gorgeous cast cannot save you from a lack of talent. The film not only fails in acting, but it also fails in the quality of the script. The ubiquity of poor jokes is quite vexatious; this horrible condition is only exacerbated by the terrible acting.

I can appreciate low-budget films and those films shot with a digital camera; however, there appears to be no purpose. If this film were intended to be a parody on many of the films of the sixties, you may see some success in that endeavor, that is if you don't shoot yourself before the conclusion of the film.

I admit that there were one or two gags that created a rictus across my face; however, it was certainly not worth my time!

A Hoot!.......2006-04-27

For a low budget indie, this movie is a hoot. A farcical comedy with twists and turns and mistaken identity. Gags and terrifically funny lines are best appreciated by people in the "biz". A totally enjoyable entertaining film. If you just want to be amused and aren't looking for heavy drama, pick this one up!

Ouch - I got brain cramps.......2006-01-19

Wow.. where do I begin? The filming is high-school, first college project quality.... lots and lots of gaffes to pick out. The acting is about the same. There are some cute moments, but the overall effect felt like a Rocky Horror knock-off.... I am talking some serious camp here folks!!! The movie really has zero to do with bollywood.... anyway, nuff said. If you are gonna watch this film... my only advice is... take two tylenol first (tequila might work)! :)

I wasn't expecting much more than fluff because this was tagged a screwball comedy, but even those meager expectations were dashed when all I got was a ridiculous and totally implausible story line, lame dialog and sight gags, cruddy camerawork, strained performances (which, to be fair, were not the fault of the actors but of the material). Ugh. I watched it to the bitter end, though, hoping it might get better, but it didn't. It would almost get some momentum going and then...thud! The best I can say about it is that the actors portraying the three principals were endearing, and trying their hardest to make the best of a bad situation. I had never seen any of them in anything else, but if the bravura they summoned up for this pathetic vehicle is any indication, they were wasted here and deserve better. There were moments when I was cringing from embarrassment for them.

If you like Hollywood nostalga, puppets, musical comedy, spoofs and parodies, or any of the above, you'll love Movie Critters' Big Picture! I would never in a million years bought this DVD on my own....which is a shame. It was one of the funniest movies I have seen in a long time.
One of my students got this for me for Christmas (he said that he had some relatives that worked on the movie) because he knew I liked muppets and puppetry. I was very impressed by what I saw: a movie that was entertaining and clean. The humor had a whide appeal and many of the jokes about hollywood from long ago will be appreciated by adults while the one liners and sight gags are great for kids. As a teacher at a Christian school I can really appreciate the moral of honesty. I strongly reccomend this to anyone looking for a good family film. I also reccomend this to anyone who is a fan of muppets and puppets in general.

2 years later.... I still think this an excellent movie. I have used it in my classroom several times and showed it to students and lent it to them as well.... only one problem..... I would love to see the movie critters return.

Movie Critters Big Picture is a movie for the entire family to love and adore. The characters come to life before your eyes and make you never want to stop watching them. The songs are creative and exciting. The storyline is both fun and inspirational. Nothing about Movie Critters is mediocre. It is actually in a class all by itself. With the colors, witty humor, and lovable cast this movie is sure to make any Friday night a fun one. I love that I can enjoy the jokes as much as the kids can. It's that smart! Get this movie for sure you won't regret it, and it will even help to instill the core value of listening to your conscience and working hard to get to the top instead of schemeing and manipulating. I love this movie! It's going to be everyone's stocking stuffer this year!

As someone who lives and works in Los Angeles/Hollywood, DREAMERS does show the "real" Hollywood. The film offers no apologies for showing the way it really is and does not cheat the audience with a sugar-coated fantasy world.

I guess there are 1000's of movies like this in the video stores that noone wants to rent. The title is unattractive and conveys the film maker's state of mind-----dreamer. The concept and storytelling are not original, a little bit of this and that, here and there: such a stereotype film-making technique from some amateurs who are trying to overwhelm the viewers with such mediocre production. Low budget is not an issue here though, but the movie does look low budget, simply because the story itself is insufficient to augment a low budget production. The writer (from China) obviously does not understand the thinking of typical Americans and how Americans perceive Hollywood. Anyway...I find this flick completely overrated.

A smart film that's worth owning.......2002-10-24

Movies about Hollywood dreams generally fall into one of two categories: ... "Dreamers" is a rare picture in that it really captures the mindset of the indie filmmaker, with humor, compassion, and spot-on insight. I've watched it many times, and I find something new I like in it each time I see it. The director and cinematographer team are wonderful, and I can't wait to see what they come up with next. In the end, you'll find out that we're all "Dreamers!"

An elderly Asian man tours Hollywood's landmarks, ruminating on the dreamy power of movies. Suddenly, we jump to the American heartland, where two boys growing up in a strict religious community plan to run away to Hollywood. This playful, oddly forked opening introduces a remarkable new talent in writer-director Ann Lu. She not only sagely dramatizes the power of movies - that it means escape, adulthood, even a substitute for religion, to these boys - she keeps us mindful that the world is, at all times, a larger place than any individual's story might suggest. When the two boys reunite in Hollywood as young men, one is streetwise and resourceful, the other naive and trusting, but both are interestingly deluded, as Lu conceives it. Neither has a monopoly on either courage or truth. This debut feature is tremendously impressive in its honesty, its refusal to cheat us with formulaic plot twists or ready-made insights. Lu, a native of China, is sharply attuned to our local dialects of greed, hope and spiritual desperation. She has a marvelous ear for what people are not saying, matched with an ability to make illuminating sense of where their hearts are leading them.

Good movie for those seeking softcore drama. Kelly Cook (her real name is kelly jaye) is good in this one, not nearly graphic and explotive as her triple x movies but the humour makes up for any shortcomings.
