ROFL.......2007-05-28
"Southern Belles"
ROFL
Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride
Living in Arkansas, we can really appreciate this film, especially its irreverence. Bell and Belle, two life-long friends, decide to Atlanta. Bell is fed up with working in a variety store but it is not easy just to pick up and leave. Her rap-loving "cracker" boyfriend is driving a car that is in her name. She has to figure out what to do so she can get away.
There is nothing subtle in this movie. Everything is in your face. Ana Faris and Laura Breckenridge are Bell and Belle, respectively. They feel that their trailer park lives are taking them nowhere and that Atlanta holds fame and fortune. They do not realize what this move can cost them and what they go through in their new surroundings is what makes this movie so wonderful.
The movie is intelligent because it does not take itself seriously. It pays tongue-in-cheek homage to "Gone With the Wind", "Thelma and Louise" and other southern themed and road films. The writers make fun of southern life while at the same time maintain deep compassion for the characters. The real joy of the film, however, is the cast. Like "Sordid Lives", they seem to be having a great time making the movie.
There is so much to see here--nuance-wise that you have to watch it twice or ore to catch it all. You will undoubtedly notice that the actors are playing directly to the cameras making the film a "shove-it-down-the-viewer's-throat" kind of film and it as if the filmmakers are saying," YOU will be involved in this movie".
The only unfair thing I saw was the over-abundance of Confederate flags that we see. No matter where you look, there they are. On the other hand, the girls say grace before they eat.
"Southern Belles" is nutty, hilarious, sweetest, corniest movies you will ever see it. It is also quite wonderful and the ending is just unbelievable. It doesn't mock he south, we do that well ourselves. It just shows us as the fun-loving people that we are.
Hilarious-A GREAT sleeper.Worth TEN stars!!.......2006-07-23
I saw this film just a few days ago on SHOWTIME and LOVED it! Anna Faris is at her usual comedic best, and newcomer Laura Breckenridge is SO believable and funny! I started to watch it with a little hesitation, but in 5 minutes was swept away by the film's innocence and believability! It's just plainly an Excellent movie, and my order for the DVD is already on it's way!!!
Funny and original.......2006-05-07
This movie is funny, original, and well-acted. Even the minor characters are well-thought-out and all actors are given the opportunity to shine. Even though you may not be familiar with the actors and may never have seen a commercial or trailer for this film, it is worth your time. Much more genuine and satisfying than a bigger-budget flick like "Sweet Home Alabama."
Great movie.......2006-04-22
Definitely a buy. I first thought it would be a campy movie that would be a good way to kill two hours with. Wrong... watched it twice in one evening and can't wait to see it with my friend later today.
This movie has so many different nuances and contrasts in it that just watching it the second time makes it worth while. For example, there's a bar fight scene where Belle is sitting leisurely at the bar sipping her beer and scheming while behind her two characters are literally doing a fast paced fist dance scene. Fists up, move twice back then twice forward while partner does the same. They each have a buddy who decides to react differently to the situation. What you think is going to happen in this movie... rarely does.
The more I think about it, the more I appreciate it. I rarely encounter a movie that makes me want to view the script and see where the director added to it but this one does.
The characters are awesome. Justin Chambers is the only one whose work I've seen before. He plays such a different character in this movie as compared to his role as Alex in 'Grey's Anatomy" that it's hard to believe it's even him. His acting is that good. He is a strong, down to earth (literally), character that makes you feel for him. In fact, it would be impossible to not identify with a lot of the characters in the movie.
Sound... whoever did the music in this one knew what they were doing. They knew when to put in the sappy music and when to scratch the album, thereby emphasizing what was going on in that scene and added the voice of the characters instead of usurping it.
Very interesting movie that I highly recommend. I'd love to say more but...
Finally a smart comedy.......2006-04-20
This is the kind of comedy that becomes an immediate cult classic and lines from it are recited over and over again by its many intelligent fans. I filed my copy right next to Terry Gilliam's 'Brazil' and the Coen brother's 'Raising Arizona'. Seeing it once simply isn't enough.

An authentic look at the life of a Broadway actor.......2002-04-16
I'm not an actor but I have a few friends who are and this film really captures what they live through. I saw it at a little theater in the East Village back in 98 or 99 (?) and the crowd, which I bet had a lot of actors, really loved it. It was a total surprise to me to see this great little independent film out of nowhere. Lenas struggle to hang in there and not give up acting is exciting and annoying and hilarious...kind of how I feel about the better actors I know: exciting (when they are performing), annoying (so damned self involved sometimes) and hilarious (no one is more fun at a party)...if you have ever thought about acting, or even have enjoyed going to theater, you've got to see this movie. The actress who played Lena is REALLY talented, and there are a few good TV actors in it, a guy from Oz and and one of the stars from Scrubs. Definitely worth checking out.
