Description
In a new approach to telling stories from the front lines of post-Katrina New Orleans, the New Orleans Video Access Center (NOVAC) is producing a one-hour program called The Drive and The New Orleans Short Documentary Series. The production is a community-based effort by Katrina victims to present the duality of life in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. In many respects, New Orleans is alive and kicking. People are moving home, schools are opening, cultural activities have returned and, in many neighborhoods, life has a sense of near normalcy; however, all it takes is a short drive outside of the French Quarter or Uptown to witness extensive loss and devastation. The magnitude of flooding was incomprehensible and New Orleans has many challenges to overcome. Through this community-based documentary project, stories are presented from a local point-of-view. We hope this effort will garner continued support for the rebuilding of a great American city. The only way to experience the magnitude of the post-Katrina destruction is to physically walk or drive through the affected areas. With this in mind, NOVAC is producing The Drive. This one-hour program provides a raw visual tour through four of the most devastated neighborhoods in New Orleans. Viewers are guided through the devastation with ongoing footage of the neighborhoods, contextual maps, and visual samples of the breached canal levees. In addition, interviews with neighborhood residents provide a point-of-view from those most affected as they attempt to rebuild their lives. The project is narrated with historical and demographic information and incorporates an original score by Emmy nominated composer, Gil Talmi. The Drive: Lower 9th Ward is the first of four neighborhood segments released to the public. As we finish producing each segment, we will release it as a stand-alone DVD for sale "at cost". In contrast to The Drive, the NOVAC Short Documentary Series takes an intimate look at the culture, people, neighborhoods and spirit that make New Orleans an American city worth rebuilding. The shorts, all directed by local filmmakers, are between 5-12 minutes and available for free viewing via Internet video websites including YouTube and GoogleVideo. In addition, the entire series is included on the DVD. This project is funded by the Greater New Orleans Foundation; Newman's Own Foundation; The RosaMary Foundation; Matt, Suzanne, Andy and Betty Wisdom; Cambridge Community Television; and other private funders. If you would like to help support this project, please share the DVD with others. In addition, NOVAC, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit, accepts tax-deductible donations which will be applied to the ongoing production of the documentary series. Visit www.novacvideo.org for more information.

In an exclusive report on the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, ABC News investigates allegations of fraud in the handling of Katrina-related damage claims in Mississippi by State Farm Insurance. Speaking publicly for the first time, two State Farm insiders, Cori and Kerri Rigsby, claim supervisors in their Mississippi office demanded that outside engineers change or bury damage reports so that State Farm would not have to pay the claims. The Rigsby sisters, who worked as independent adjustors for State Farm for eight years, have provided thousands of documents to federal and state prosecutors in Mississippi. Their allegations are now a key part of a massive lawsuit against State Farm by policyholders who claim they were cheated. "Katrina was devastating. But so was State Farm," says Cori Rigsby. "Until this storm, we were very proud to work with State Farm," she says. A lawyer for State Farm, Wayne Drinkwater, says the company paid more than a billion dollars in claims in Mississippi and denies State Farm cheated anyone.
