Product Description

Nestled deep in the postcard-perfect French Alps, the Grande Chartreuse is considered one of the world s most ascetic monasteries. In 1984, German filmmaker Philip Gröning wrote to the Carthusian order for permission to make a documentary about them. They said they would get back to him. Sixteen years later, they were ready. Gröning, sans crew or artificial lighting, lived in the monks quarters for six months filming their daily prayers, tasks, rituals and rare outdoor excursions. This transcendent, closely observed film seeks to embody a monastery, rather than simply depict one it has no score, no voiceover and no archival footage. What remains is stunningly elemental: time, space and light. One of the most mesmerizing and poetic chronicles of spirituality ever created, INTO GREAT SILENCE dissolves the border between screen and audience with a total immersion into the hush of monastic life. More meditation than documentary, it s a rare, transformative experience for all.

4 out of 5 stars INTO GREAT SILENCE.......2007-07-02

Filmmaker Philip Groning spent six months living among the monks of the Grand Chartreuse Charterhouse in the French Alps for his documentary "Into Great Silence."

I went into the film with a strong curiosity about the life of the Carthusian monks and was treated to an up-close-and-personal look at their lives across four seasons spanning a one year cycle.

I am told the film-maker was only allowed to bring himself - which meant he was The Director, The Cinematographer, The Lighting Technician and The Editor. To make it even harder, there was no lighting allowed inside the monasteries and the filmmaker was at no time to cause any disruption to the ritualistic cycle of the monks daily life. You will notice extremely "grainy" (ie low resolution) sequences in some that were filmd in portions of the monastery with little natural light.

Certainly a film best watched on screen (than on DVD) if you wish to feel the walls of the monastry and smell the cold air outside in the courtyard where a near 70-year old semi-blind monk chops wood to stock up for winter.

For those keenly aware that they came to watch a documentary film(not a staged re-creation) that waited 16 years before filming was approved, and the fact that the filming itself was carried out in extremely difficult technical circumstances, this will be a rewarding experience. Philip Groening appears to have attempted to use all available footage to tell the whole story, and unfortunately stretched the film duration beyond 3 hours - a litle too long to sit patiently and watch. Did I mention the monks have a vow of silence inside the monastery the whole year, except for a few days?. The silence on the screen is interrupted only by sounds of footfalls, chopping or sawing of wood, and sometimes you will even find yourself enjoying the mere sound of utensils being washed for the next meal, a relief from the deafening silence. There are ofcourse several scenes of chanting in the chapel, something he monks do every few hours day and night, which meant they slept barely a few hours at a time before they woke up and went about their assigned routines.

The overall feel of the creates a strongly claustrophobic feeling if you find yourself getting absorbed into the film. A scene showing the process of acceptance of new monks into the Order almost made me feel first hand the massive sacrifice and commitment two youngsters going through the acceptance ritual, were about to make.

All in all, this film was a unique documentary filmed in the most unusual circumstances and certainly a must-see if only to peek into the lives of a set of people who have voluntarily given up everything that defines life for us, and happily living that existence almost from early life till death. These are extraordinary men living an extraordinarily disciplined lives in dedication to their Order.

2 out of 5 stars The Most Memorable Film of the Year.......2007-06-30

Not knowing what to expect, I was totally overwhelmed by the beauty, quiet and attentiveness of the many aspects of Carthusian life in this film. The camera approached La Grande Chartreuse, the monks and the extraordinary Alpine setting from the inside making of it a stunning, intimate, impressionistic cinematographic masterpiece. I saw the film twice and enjoyed it even more the second time. And I plan to see it again!

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite.......2007-06-20

The experience of this movie was its own silent retreat. So often we neglect silence, we neglect prayer. What a beautiful reminder to enter prayer - and to enter prayer deeply. When I saw this film, I took my friend's fifth and seventh grade girls with me. They loved the film as well and we spent the next hour or so talking about it. This film is exquisite!

5 out of 5 stars See it with your heart.......2007-06-06

Open your brilliant, silent heart and see this film fully as if you were there (in a way, you are.)An unprecedented opportunity to glimpse what life more truly means

4 out of 5 stars Well worth the time and effort to watch .......2007-06-03

This movie will not appeal to everyone, even lovers of "art-house" cinema.

Initially, I was somewhat reluctant to go to the cinema and watch this movie. However, I accompanied a lady-friend and for close to 3 hours, we sat mesmerised by the tale that unfolded before us.

We both thought that the movie could have been cut in parts - the slightly out of focus snow falling at nightime seemed pointless; the repeated verses from the bible. For example, the quotes from "The book of Kings" were fine the first time around, but after the 3rd (?) time, it became too repetitious and unnecessary.

Another (minor) criticism of the movie is that there are some moments where the film is very grainy. I can only guess that this was due to lack of sufficient lighting, but surely the director could have either obtained a camera that would film low-light without the high grain or, change the f-stop on the lens, to allow more light.

The chance to view life inside a cloistered environment is a rare opportunity and I for one, congratulate both the Abbot of the monastery and the director for deciding that this was a story to be shared with the world.

Finally, watching the men play in the snow was unexpected and showed that they were not only monks but that they also had a human side. It also showed that they were able to enjoy some activities outside of the monastery, which had no religious overtones.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars KEYS TO GOD.......2007-05-17

Keys of the Kingdom is an inspiring, wonderful, and exciting movie. Gregory Peck plays a wonderful part as a priest.

5 out of 5 stars Spirituality vs. the Letter of the Law.......2007-03-24

Keys of the Kingdom by A.J. Cronin is very dear to my heart as my first life lessons on tolerance were quoted from it to me by my dear grandmother.
EVERY TIME she came to visit she quoted the passage "there are many rooms in my mansion" to make the point that no one religion has a monopoly on Heaven. The movie is especially touching as were many movies made in the 1940s. The focus is actually on life and basic human values instead of superficiality, violence and vulgar sexual content. One walks away feeling uplifted with a new or revisited insight focused on spirituality rather than the "letter of the law". Gregory Peck is believable and engaging as the humble, sweet-spirited Father Chisholm. It is difficult to believe that this was his debut film. Everyone struggling with issues of faith in today's world should view this film to get in touch with what is truly important.

5 out of 5 stars "Lost" classic.......2007-02-19

I had never heard of this film until I saw it listed in a video catalog a few years ago. I don't recall it being on TV when I was young and I doubt it was mentioned when I heard people discuss the "classics." After finally seeing it recently, however, I have to say that it SHOULD be.

Gregory Peck absolutely shines as Father Chisholm, a simple priest who is dealt a "bad hand" by fate. He encounters hardships in his youth, as a young man, and especially when he accepts an assignment to lead a mission in far-off China. Through it all, he keeps himself grounded and maintains a healthy sense of optimism, oftentimes when the average person might be tempted to "give up." It is a heartwarming story of one man's struggle to follow his calling, and watching it, one will have no problem understanding why Peck was nominated for an Academy Award for this performance. Peck's Father Chisholm exhibits extraordinary resolve and determination, tempered with a sense of humility and a sincere desire to be the best person that he can be.

Five stars. A "lost classic" that deserves to be rediscovered!

Product Description

THE BLOSSOMING OF MAXIMO OLIVEROS tells the story of Maxi (Nathan Lopez) a gay, pre-teen growing up in the slums of Manila, who is deeply loyal to his family of petty thieves. His world revolves around his father and two brothers, who love and protect him in return for Maxi s devotion to completing domestic chores and covering their tracks when they commit crimes. When Maxi meets Victor (JR Valentin) a well-meaning, handsome policeman, the two become fast friends and Maxi begins to learn that he can have a better life, which soon incurs the ire and disapproval of Maxi s family. The digitally-shot feature made its U.S. debut at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and was the official Philippine entry of the 2007 Academy Awards® for Best Foreign Language film. The film has also garnered several film festival awards including the Teddy Award at the 2006 Berlinale Film Festival and Best Asian Film at the 2006 Rotterdam Film Festival.

"The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros"

In the Slums

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

Soon to be seen at the Arkansas LGBT Film Festival is "The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros", a new film from the Philippines. Deep in drama and with plenty of laughs, it is a beautiful film. It is frank and honest and will probably change the way you look at poverty, at gay people, at the nature of families and love and at the love
of parent and child, sibling and sibling.
Is Maximo Oliveros gay? He dresses like a girl and has a crush on a good looking policeman. As we get deeper into the film, we question whether he is gay or just troubled.
When Maxi's mother dies due to an unknown illness, he takes over seeing to his two brothers ad his father--all of the petty thieves. Everything seems to be working just fine until a young cop appears. Maxi becomes enamored of him and must choose between his feelings for the cop and his family. As can be expected, things get both ugly and violent.
Director Aureus Solito and screenplay writer Michiko Yamamoto give us a beautiful coming of age story. Nathan Lopez as Maximo Oliveros is a wonderful young actor and the treatment of him is unique and interesting. Whether or not he is gay is not an issue in the movie. There are elements of camp but in fair amounts and everything in the movie works because it is so well done. The filmmakers know when to pull back ad never let anything get too sensitive or emotional. Melodrama is avoided.
What the film shows us is that an effeminate boy can exist in the slums and have a peaceful existence. Even with the tremendous influence of the Roman Catholic church, the general mood of the Philippines lies somewhere between tolerance, amusement and acceptance.
The homoeroticism of the film is handled with great sensitivity. There is more a sense of hero worship between Maxi and the cop than sexuality. The people exhibit true caring rather than homophobia and there is a sense of ambiguity in the sexuality of the film and in JR Valentin's portrayal of the cop. There are scenes between the two that are highly charged and one especially that could be interpreted as pedophilia were it not so beautifully handled. The ending satisfies in every way.
Are puppy love, unrequited love, familial obligations and economic pressures necessarily gay? I don't think they are.
The streets of Manila are intriguing as photographed here as are the tensions among the principal characters. Here is a marginal family that exhibits loving and tender feelings.
Again I must cite Nathan Lopez for his performance. He has created a memorable character that will break your heart. His sensitivity, warmth and humor are astounding.
The subtlety of the film does not have the usual histrionics found in most films like this. It is the rawness and harshness of the film that stays with you.

It's hardly shameful that The Three Godfathers ranks as the slightest John Ford Western in a five-year arc that includes My Darling Clementine, Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Wagon Master, and Rio Grande. The source, a Peter B. Kyne story both hard-bitten and sentimental, had already been filmed at least five times--once by Ford himself as Marked Men (1919). The star of that silent version, Harry Carey, had recently died. This remake is dedicated to him ("Bright Star of the early western sky") and proudly introduces his son, Harry Carey Jr. (who had already appeared in Howard Hawks's Red River--as did his father--but we won't quibble).

Just before Christmas, three workaday outlaws (John Wayne, Pedro Armendáriz, Harry Carey Jr.) rob a bank in Welcome, Arizona, and flee into the desert. The canny town marshal (Ward Bond) moves swiftly to cut them off from the wells along their escape route, so they make for another, deep in the wasteland. There's no water waiting for them, but there is a woman (Mildred Natwick) on the verge of death--and also of giving birth. The three badmen accept her dying commission as godfathers to the newborn. Motley variants of the Three Wise Men, they strike out for the town of New Jerusalem with her Bible as roadmap. It becomes increasingly apparent that saving the child's life will cost them their own.

Ford's is the softest retelling of the tale; in place of Kyne's bitter/triumphant final twist, he adds a very broad comic postlude. Elsewhere, the nearly sacramental treatment of the mother's death is followed by an extended gosh-almighty sequence of the banditos reading up on childcare. But it's all played with great gusto and tenderness--especially by Wayne, who's rarely been more appealing. Visually the film is one knockout shot after another. This was Ford's first Western in Technicolor, as well as his first collaboration with cinematographer Winton Hoch. What they do with sand ripples and shadows and long plumes of train smoke is rapturously beautiful. It's also often too arty by half, but who can blame them? --Richard T. Jameson

Description

Fugitive bank robbers Robert (John Wayne), William (Harry Carey Jr.) and Pedro (Pedro Armendariz) stand at a desert grave. Caring for the newborn infant of the woman they just buried will ruin any chance of escape. But they won't go back on their promise to her. They won't abandon little Robert William Pedro. Director John Ford's Western retelling of the Biblical Three Wise Men tale remains a scenic and thematic masterpiece. Ford adds color to his feature-film palette, capturing stunning vistas via cinematographer Winton Hoch, who would win two of his three Academy Awards * for Ford films. Again, populist-minded Ford asserts that even men of dissolute character can follow that inner star of Bethlehem to their own redemption.

4 out of 5 stars Ford 'Christmas' Western Showcases Wayne, 'Stock Company'..........2006-12-24

"Three Godfathers", John Ford's second version of Peter B. Kyne's oft-filmed story of three outlaws finding redemption, has been hailed by some critics as an unsung Ford masterpiece; while I wouldn't go quite THAT far, it is an exceptional western, with Ford's 'Stock Company', headed by John Wayne, offering warmly sentimental performances.

The film was created as a 'tribute' to legendary actor Harry Carey, who had passed away in 1947, and had been young Ford's mentor, starring in his first version of the tale, "Marked Men", in 1919. This production would introduce Carey's son, Harry Jr., as likable young horse rustler, William Kearney ("They call me 'The Abilene Kid'"). Wayne took on the elder Carey's role ('Bob Hightower' in this version), the more pragmatic, but caring leader of the trio; and Mexican star/Ford regular Pedro Armendáriz completed the band, as sweet-natured, if wild-talking Pedro Roca Fuerte. The three are unrepentant outlaws, arriving in Welcome, Arizona to rob the bank, but it is quickly established that they are not 'bad' men...in fact, there are NO real villains in this film. Their antagonist, Sheriff Perley 'Buck' Sweet (Ward Bond), is introduced while gardening outside his home, and he and Hightower have a quite jovial conversation...until the trio discover what his occupation is!

The bank robbery goes off without a hitch, but young Kearney is wounded during the getaway, and Sweet and his posse (including Ford regulars Hank Worden and Ben Johnson) are soon in pursuit.

To this point in the film, it could be said that this was a fairly standard tale; but the trio's convoluted escape through the Arizona desert leads them to a broken-down wagon at a destroyed waterhole, and a woman (Ford favorite Mildred Natwick), stranded, dying, and about to give birth. Pedro delivers the child, whom she names Robert William Pedro Hightower, entrusting the men, as the child's Godfathers, to take him to safety. She dies, and the three face a responsibility that will change their lives, forever...

Released by MGM (although filmed by Ford and Merian Cooper's Argosy Pictures, which explains why the film lacks the usual MGM 'gloss'), the production was ripe with entertaining 'back stories', the most famous involving barrel cacti, and Ford's legendary stubbornness. When Ford told his production team that the outlaws would survive by siphoning water from a barrel cactus, it was quickly pointed that the plants he selected were the wrong species, and wouldn't work. Ford loudly and colorfully disagreed...and, secretly, the night before shooting, liberally soaked all the cacti with so much water that when the cameras began rolling, the next morning, water flowed freely from the chunks cut out of them!

There is a prophetic moment in the story; Pedro, his leg badly broken, is left with Hightower's pistol, which he uses to kill himself, rather than face a long, painful demise. Less than fifteen years later, Armendáriz, dying of cancer, would kill himself with a gun, rather than face the disease's ravages.

"Three Godfathers" is a western story of redemption, set at Christmas, making it an essential for the holidays. While it can't be called 'top-drawer' John Ford, even an 'average' film by the legendary director is better than 99% of Hollywood's product...and not to be missed!

A strong cast, impressive production values, and astute direction distinguish this generally successful dramatization of the tumultuous life of the 15th-century French heroine whose military victories were eclipsed by her martyrdom. At the heart of the story is the conflict between the teenager's simple but fierce faith and the more complex political and theological issues that influence her downfall, a theme fleshed out through the portrayals of the young warrior's liege, the Dauphin (later King) Charles, and the Bishop Cauchon.

The 140-minute feature follows Joan D'Arc's odyssey from peasant obscurity to notoriety as the "Maid of Orleans," spiritual fulcrum for the beleaguered French forces struggling to halt English invaders. As played by Leelee Sobieski (Eyes Wide Shut), her evolution from naive farm girl to seasoned soldier is convincing, as is her gradual awakening to the underlying agendas of church and state. Most critically, Sobieski radiates the young girl's fervent spiritual devotion.

Framing Sobieski's focal performance are two equally fine turns from Neil Patrick Harris, who erases his legacy as TV's Doogie Howser, M.D. with a neatly shaded, steely Charles, and Peter O'Toole, who balances his signature reserve and present physical frailty to make Cauchon a moral compass for the story. Having opposed Joan as a threat to orthodoxy, the Bishop recognizes her purity too late; O'Toole turns this moment into a dreadful epiphany that resonates through the story's inevitable, fiery denouement. Fine supporting performances from Peter Strauss, Shirley MacLaine, and Maximillian Schell, plus evocative medieval locations in the Czech Republic, further buttress the story. French-Canadian director Christian Duguay handles the large-scale battle sequences with fluid blocking and smart camera work. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars The Most Fantastic Joan of Arc Ever Made!.......2007-03-08

The music of Charlotte Church brings out the emotions of religion and patriotism in this rendition of Joan's life. LeeLee Sobieski is fenominal in this role. This will be her unforgettable role of a lifetime. The rest of the cast is perfectly placed to enhance her adventures. This is the most realistic view of the times and the events surrounding the miracles of Saint Joan of Arc.

2 out of 5 stars I prefer..........2007-03-01

This movie was ok. I do prefer The Messenger starring Milla Jovovich. Milla is exceptional in that version.

5 out of 5 stars The Maid of Lorraine.......2007-01-14

"Joan of Arc" with Leelee Sobieski is the best Joan of Arc movie. The story is a great re-telling of the story of Joan's calling by God, her work for the crown of France, and her trial for witchcraft. Her mission is to unite France under King Charles. He uses her, as the embodiment of the mythical Maid of Lorraine, to raise an army, and he sends her to the rescue of Orléans. After Charles is crowned, she's captured in Burgundy, sold to the English, examined, found a heretic by the Inquisition, and burned at the stake. I love that the movie included the Maid of Lorraine aspect of the story.

5 out of 5 stars An Emotional Journey.......2006-12-29

I have no words to describe how this movie touched me. One girl's faith, passion for truth and justice, determination to follow a calling, and great love for her people changed everything. How pleased we should be that such a story was given the portrayel it deserves on this magnifiscent film. I highly reccomend.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible cast - Excellent script - A very powerful and wonderful film!.......2006-09-01

In 1999 "Joan of arc" received two updated film adaptions. One was a big budget motion picture titled "The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc" which starred singer/actress Milla Jovovich. The other was a simple made for TV movie called "Joan of Arc" starring Leelee Sobieski. Hollywood's sudden renewed interest in the character of Joan was basically an attempt to cash in on the popularity of the TV series XENA (about a warrior princess).

The film "The Messenger" took the "warrior princess" approach, concentrating on action over substance. The finished product actually displayed none of the qualities that made Xena a hit TV show and played like a low-grade "Braveheart meets Conan meets Red Sonja". Simply put, it's a horrible film.

The writers and producers of the made for TV movie "Joan of Arc" decided to take the high road. Instead of churning out just another throw-away "action flick", they assembled an incredible cast and then backed them up with an amazing script. The result is perhaps the best film version of the "Joan of Arc" story and a movie that anyone can enjoy regardless of religious beliefs.

Leelee Sobieski is perfect as Joan, I cannot imagine anyone bringing more to this role than she does. Peter Strauss proves once again that he's a very underated actor. Peter O'Toole delivers an incredible performance, certainly one of his all time best! Shirley MaClaine, Maximillian Schell, and yes, even Neil Patrick Harris deliver fine performances!

The last half hour of this film will have you riveted to the screen. Not by showcasing mindless action, but by the sheer power of the script and the incredible performances by O'toole and Sobieski. I highly recommend this wonderful film!

This movie reminds me of a movie that happens all the time. It was so heart felt and romantic.

5 out of 5 stars A very thoughtful and thought provoking film.......2007-01-31

I've seen this movie several times. It was at the most recent viewing that several thoughts came to mind. I worked in a major medical center for several years and on occassion my clinic would see children who were severely disabled. I would think what kind of life were the kids and their parents having - spending many days in the hospital. I still don't know if I have an answer but the film has me thinking about it again. I can empathize with the husband not being able to deal with the catastrophy (from his viewpoint) of a disabled child. My ex-wife was diagnosed with a possible cancer (ultimately found to be not a cancer). When she was describing how she was feeling (very very scared) I didn't know what to say so ultimately just sat there like a dope and looked at her. Not my best performance as a husband. This movie brought that scene in my own life back very vividely. Watching the mom's helper after she had been injured in a car accident apologizing for not being able to take care of Julia and Julia's mom and her alcoholic mother brought back other memories of my alcoholic father and how at the age of 12 I was trying to figure out ways to make him not drink. I never did come up with a solution but seeing the torment in the child (who was apparently younger than me) brought the moments of over 40 years ago back to me. So for me, this movie was thought provoking on many issues about my own life. I'm not sure that this is a movie for everyone. Some have said it has a good ending. I'm not sure. There is a pending death and you won't if Amy's mom says sober. There are uncertainties in this movie just like in real life. But at the conclusion you are at least hopeful that things will work out ok for everyone. Ultimately this was a hard movie for me to watch but at the same time it was beneficial. The acting was exceptional and the feelings and emotions they all conveyed were easy to understand and feel. I recommend this movie highly but I'm not sure it is a movie that kids will easily understand. Parents should stand by for lots of questions which have very hard answers.

5 out of 5 stars Feel Good Movie.......2006-07-26

As many people as possible should watch this movie. It never fails to leave the watcher with a warm feeling and that all will be well. Makes strong arguments for family values. Kimberly Williams is superb in her role as a single mother struggling to raise a disabled child. Campbell Scott also gives a commendable performance as the silent admirer. Blair Brown is the perfect mother to Kimberly's character. Do watch it!

Fun, if a little schmaltzy. Watch it with the kids. You've seen this dog before - in OLD YELLER.

4 out of 5 stars Good showcase for optimistic existentialism.......2004-10-23

This is an interesting story that consistently presents the optimistic and appealing side of existentialism. The characters are multi-dimensional and believable, and the story touching but not sappy (except maybe the ending). The acting and video are typical of 1959 and are a bit jarring now -- but the story makes up for it, in my opinion.

The movie presents a consistent, optimistic existentialist point of view: virtue is having and making choices which shape your own destiny; while un-virtue is having or exercising no control over one's life. Also, virtue is focusing on the individual human side of people, while un-virtue is treating people legalistically as objects. As the plot progresses, Nello, though persistent and determined in his pursuit of his dream, finds his choices slipping away until it looks like he has lost everything, even his life. But in the end, he, the miller, the legalistic priest, and the artist mentor all find existential redemption.

I've also reviewed the 1999 version of this movie, which I really disliked. I go into more details about the characters and compare the 1959 and 1999 versions point by point. You may find that review helpful also.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Film for Families with Mature Children.......2004-10-22

This movie would be just another run-of-the-mill movie about an orphan boy and a dog with some serious overacting on the part of Theodore Bikel, among others, but there are parts of this movie that make it worth watching.

Nello, played by David Ladd, the future husband of Cheryl Ladd, lives with his grandfather after his mother passed away. Nello loves art and paintings and longs to be a painter. He frequently sneaks into the local cathedral to avoid paying a franc to see original paintings by Peter Paul Rubens. However, Nello's grandfather is poor and the pair can barely afford to eat, much less purchase paints for Nello. However, in spite of the little they have the two are happy.

Life changes for Nello when he and his grandfather come upon a dog left to die. Nello wants to adopt the dog and help it, and his grandfather reluctantly agrees. The principal difficulty is that there is barely enough food for Nello and his grandfather, and the dog is just that much more burden. Things continue to degrade for Nello as the miller refuses to allow his daughter to play with Nello after catching Nello drawing her picture. Then the man who abandoned the dog tries twice to take it back, planning to abuse the dog again. The second time the man attempts to take the dog back the miller gets involved and the man meets an unfortunate end. It seems as though life continues to go down hill for Nello.

There is one bright spot in Nello's life. He has made a kind of friend of a painter in Antwerp who, after yelling and complaining to Nello, has started to help Nello realize his ambition of becoming a painter. Ultimately the painter helps Nello enter a local painting competition by providing Nello with paper and paints. Nello's grandfather sold some things and allowed Nello to buy a brush before he died. Nello's one great hope is that he will win the painting contest, which will allow him to continue to live in his rented hovel.

While you can see where Nello has hope that all will turn out well, there are too many factors working against Nello, and eventually he gives his dog to the Miller's daughter and leaves. In the meantime, the painter has found the painting that Nello has entered in the contest and wants to talk to him about it, but then he finds that Nello has disappeared. Where did Nello go? What will happen to his dog? Did I mention that Nello wonders why the painter has yet to marry his model, who is obviously in love with him? I leave these questions for you to answer if you can find a copy of this movie.

Difficult to see from the quality of the movie, but the paintings by Peter Paul Rubens are truly wondrous and appear to be authentic. Even with the weak video I will still impressed by these magnificent paintings. The cathedral in which they were housed, which the end credits states is genuine, is gorgeous, a fitting home for the art within.

The quality of this movie may leave a bit to be desired, as the performances vary from wooden to hammy, but the scenery in 1959 Belgium and Holland, especially the cathedral interiors, is beautiful, and the story should appeal to mature children ages 7 and above who can handle the occasional violence. David Ladd is wonderful as the center of the attention and his perfect blend of enthusiasm and innocence brings to mind Little Orphan Annie.

3 out of 5 stars Nice Disney syle fare.......2004-06-21

I remember enjoying watching this on the Wonderful World of Disney as a child. A "boy meets dog, loses grandfather, finds new family" formula film. A couple of sad/scary moments, nicely smoothed over by the sudden appearance of a parent/adult to explain things.

A pleasant, if bland depiction of Flanders in 1900. Worth watching to see scenes of Antwerp in 1959 when it was filmed.

Out of print I believe, but may still be found in bargain bins.

Jess Franco, the Spanish director known for soft-core films featuring vixens in various precarious situations, successfully incorporates Bram Stoker's Dracula into his repertoire with Count Dracula. Starring Hammer's Dracula Christopher Lee, this film is unrelated to the Hammer films, to its credit. This film may be the most accurate telling of Stoker's classic vampire story, so faithful is it to the novel, even to include many of the book's lines in the script. With an array of truly Gothic, medieval sets, and a cast well-versed in horror, including Klaus Kinski (Werner Herzog's Nosferatu) as Renfield, and Soledad Miranda (Vampyros Lesbos) as Lucy, Count Dracula authentically captures Stoker's careful blend of physical monstrosity and sexual fetish to portray the Count's quest for eternal life. For example, few vampire films besides Franco's take time to feature Lucy and her lover Quincy's blood transfusions that reinforce blood's metaphoric connection to sexual desire. Moreover, Maria Rohm plays Mina Harker with the proper innocence to serve as a foil character to her promiscuous friend, Lucy. Dr. Van Helsing, in this film, gets ample opportunity to sleuth vampirism. Franco relays the story of this Transylvanian count who leaves his castle in the Carpathian mountains for a house in England by accentuating the sexual aspects of the plot, which is what any Franco fan would hope for. Additionally enlightening is this DVD's featurette, in which Franco describes his theories about vampire films. --Trinie Dalton

Description

Count Dracula is a highly atmospheric adaptation of the classic Bram Stoker novel, directed with panache by auteur Jess Franco (Venus in Furs, The Diabolical Dr. Z).

Screen icon Christopher Lee (Horror of Dracula, Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring) portrays the titular Count Dracula, who flees the cold confines of his Carpathian castle for the shores of England, where he must feed on the blood of beautiful Lucy (Soledad Miranda, Vampyros Lesbos) and Mina (Maria Rohm, 99Women) in order to grow youthful and stay alive.

Also featuring excellent performances by Herbert Lom (The Ladykillers) as Van Helsing and Klaus Kinski (Nosferatu the Vampyre) as Renfield, as well as an ominous score by Bruno Nicolai (Eugenie de Sade, The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave), Count Dracula is presented for the first time on DVD in the U.S.

2 out of 5 stars Snooooooorrrrrrrrrzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.......2007-06-12

THIS is Chris Lee's favorite version of the Count?! C'mon! It's slow, ponderous, and boring. Watching blood clot is more exciting. The author further fails in his leap of faith that everyone just knows the Dracula mythos and is familiar with Stoker's novel, by creating scenes and dialog that make no sense without the background knowledge. Bela and Todd, you're still the classic best, and this version doesn't even fly close.

4 out of 5 stars Great Christopher Lee gem I am seeing for the first time........2007-05-21

This is a very moody, atmospheric adaption. The sets and costumes are great as well as the acting. The movie is well cast! I always enjoy Christopher Lee as Dracula and did compare this to the Hammer versions, definitely a different interpretation. Herbert Lom is great as always too. Some of the scenes could have been tied together better, it seemed like some scenes were inserted at the wrong time. The special effects, especially the bat sequences could have been better. It's worth watching in any event.

3 out of 5 stars Jess Franco's twist on Dracula is not to bad!!.......2007-05-13

I enjoyed this version of Dracula more than I thought I would. Jess Franco did a pretty god job telling the story and of course with Chris Lee in it that is just a big bonus. It is definetly worth checking out.

4 out of 5 stars A special find.......2007-05-07

I was very glad to have this dvd for my collection - my old tape has stretched some time ago and the dvd is a superb print of an interesting attempt to film Stoker's Dracula.
I was at a film convention thirty odd years ago when Christopher Lee was enthusing over playing the character "properly" after all the years he had been associated with it.
The extras are wonderful;Franco saying that Terence Fisher didnt take his Dracula "seriously" in his opinion caused me to smile - I had sat beside Terry when watching Franco's Count Dracula and when it finished he said, with his usual twinkle,"For the first ten minutes I thought, my God, it's better than mine - and then I thought - no it's not!" And I agree with him.
The other sheer delight was the audio recording of Christopher Lee reading a version of the novel - for so many years a thing of legend which few poeple possessed - and if they did it was a scratchy rendition committed to tape by kind friends in America. Now here it is in all its glory - a masterpiece by Mr Lee, made, according to him, on a reel-to-reel recorder in his bathroom so his infant daughter couldnt interrupt! And what a wonderful performance. So thank you Amazon for making it possible to acquire a long-sought after collector's item.Worth every penny!

It's life in the Theater with a capital T in this film adaptation of the London and Broadway hit by Ronald Harwood. Though we see other people, the film is really a duet between Sir (Albert Finney), an aging actor-manager who runs his own theater company, and Norman (Tom Courtenay), his dresser, who gets him into costume and, ultimately, into shape to go onstage each night. Sir is on his last legs; Norman is alternately his cheerleader, his parent, and his whipping boy--whatever it takes to get Sir up to performance level each night. Finney perfectly captures the vainglorious insecurity of this aging ham, whose career has never quite matched his expectations but who has to convince himself each night (with Norman's help) that a performance in the provinces is as big a deal as treading the boards in the West End. The film lives and dies, however, with Courtenay's neatly nuanced performance as Norman. No man is a hero to his valet--but Courtenay finds the affection along with the disdain that are part of this character. A great backstage tale. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars Learn Something About Lear .......2007-07-02

I was hoping someone would notice that the relationship between "Sir" and the Dresser parallels the relationship between Lear and his Fool. This is a wonderful story, very funny and sad in its own right.

5 out of 5 stars Two Great Contemporaries Appear Together.......2007-01-04

It is almost painful to watch the discomfiture of tyrranical actor Albert Finney (b. 1936) in his 247th stage performance of King Lear. Once a great bombastic actor, the poor fellow, in his dotage, can't remember his lines and must rely on his beloved assistant, called "The Dresser," brilliantly played by the excitable, meticulous Tom Courtenay (b. 1936).

The film is a psychological delight, with each part played to pefection and with the exquisite cruelty of Finney as he imitates in real life the unhinged Lear treating his utterly loyal cast and in particular his poor Dresser, whose only job is to please his boss, with shallow disdain and contempt.

The end is a testament to the love and devotion of a single-minded servant and his ill-appreciated - although deeply fulfilling - reverence for his master. This is what I'd call an "art film" for thinking people who are not afraid to see heroes unhinged by destiny and the ravages of life. A truly great film!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliantly Acted And Superbly Written!.......2006-10-24

Of all the films that Albert Finney has ever starred in, "The Dresser" is his greatest film [in my opinion]. Albert Finney's acting and nuances in the film are unbelievable and totally convincing. This film is highly recommended. The film stars Albert Finney as a traveling Shakespearean actor whose own life is in under tremendous stress. He is beginning to lose grip of the mental faculties in his own life; and while he is undergoing these stresses in his life, and the continual breakdown of his sanity, he is assisted in his theatre performances by his dresser (Tom Courtenay). Courtenay's performance compliments Finney, and the two give a outstanding acting performance.

Both of these actor's give their ALL in this wonderful performance, as they try and keep the audiences entertained during the war [WWII]. However, the performances are beginning to become a strain on Finney. With his life already complicated and in dire need of rest, his motto of 'The Show must go on' keeps him entertaining the audiences at the detriment of his own health. With the always faithful companion of his dresser (Courtenay) close by to help assist the old Shakespearean actor on his last legs, the film makes for a very sad and touching film. I don't want to give away anything in the film which will ruin it for you, however, I will write that Finney and Courtenay give a touching and superb story of a freindship whose time has come, and the director, Peter Yates did an admirable job with the film and its characters. Highly recommended. [Stars: 5+]

5 out of 5 stars THE KEAR LEAR OF MOVIES.......2006-08-21

If you like shakespeare, you'll enjoy this movie. If your an Albert Finney fan, you'll LOVE this movie. This is probably one of the greatest movies that I have ever seen. I rented this years ago before the days of DVD's, and it so affected me that I watched it every day for a week. Albert Finney gives the performance of his life as he portrays the role of an ageing Shakespearean actor who litterally gives the last performance of HIS life. The movie is set in 1940's England. Finney plays the ageing head of a Shakespearean company, which travels from one theater to another, trying to bring a bit of happiness to the war weary population. He himself is weary and tired as he struggles to keep his company together, and weather the storms of air raids and bombed out theatres. Finney's character finds himself slowely losing grasps of reality as the pressures of age, the war, and having once again to "dawn his robes" and play "the most difficult role any shakespearean actor must endure", that of King Lear. John Hurt plays his faithful and dutiful Dresser, Norman. Hurt is equally engrossing as his character tries desparetly to keep Finney from losing his mind, and at the same time, not let the rest of the Company know that something isn't quite right with their leader. Norman also struggles with the herculean task of keeping Finney's character focused on the one thing that he was born to do, and that's to portray King Lear. The enite cast is excellent as well. If you like a good drama, with great acting to boot, then get this movie. You'll never regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Nominated then forgotten!.......2006-01-25

England--WWII-- Albert Finney is the aging star of a Shakespearean stage company, and Tom Courtney is his backstage "nancy-boy" dresser, who must somehow deal with the egomaniacal old ham in the early statges of senile dementia or Alzheimer's. The show must go on, despite bombing raids, Finney's collapse, and other difficulties--or must it?

The fop and the falling star share brilliantly-acted interactions that are alternately infuriating and touching. With well-timed direction, a great screenplay, and a sturdy plot, this film won 5 Oscar nominations but --amazingly-- no Oscars.

That doesn't mean this incipient classic should be overlooked. A fine addition to any DVD library, and one that may not "stay in print;" Order THE DRESSER now--you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars All Around.......2007-04-03

My attention was first drawn to this movie because Kristen Bell of the CW's Veronica Mars is in it. After reading the discription I knew I had to purchase it and I am glad I did. Not only was it a perfect cast and the acting terrific but the movie all around was fantastic. I know it was based on a true story and that made it all the more captivating. I highly recommend this movie.

5 out of 5 stars touching.......2007-03-09

Im not much of a lifetime movie fan but Im a huge Kristen Bell fan so i bought this just for that and i found myself loving this movie it is a touching story Kristen Bell is very endearing in this roll im not a big Anne Heche fan but she was good as the neglectful drug abusing mother
This is a true story of hope and unconditional love

5 out of 5 stars Gracie's Choice.......2006-11-09

It's amazing how Gracie rose to the situation. How many other young children could or would do what she did. Just to keep her family together. Too bad the State didn't step in along time before they did.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring Story!.......2006-06-17

WOW!! I thought this movie was fantastic! We as people always think we have it bad until we hear someone elses story. It was truly inspiring to see a 17 year old girl become a woman so that she could raise her siblings and give them a life that she never had. What a strong and courageous girl she was!!! You gotta see this movie!

5 out of 5 stars Very Good for a "Lifetime" Movie.......2005-06-12

For a movie on "Lifetime," this picture is very high quality, very perceptive. It is a story of how a teenager has to survive with a highly disfunctional, self-centered, drug-addicted mother. Her courage is very exciting to watch, and her tremendous efforts are rewarded in the end. You must see this movie.
