Description
CLOUDS is the award-winning feature film debut of acclaimed playwright Don Thompson (L.A. BOOK OF THE DEAD, TIBET DOES NOT EXIST, DEMOCRACY:A WORK IN PROGRESS). The story of CLOUDS involves the journey of physicist Robert St. John and his quest to define the ultimate "theory" regarding the nature of reality. While on a beachside sabbatical to work on his theory, St. John meets a burned-out artist, a mysterious and beautiful woman, a religious landlady, and a has-been actor -- all who help turn his initially scientific quest into a search for inner meaning. Released theatrically (limited) in 2000, and winner of numerous awards and special recognition on the festival circuit, CLOUDS takes inspiration from directors such as Bergman, Antonioni, and Bogdanovich, and combines a European and American aesthetic that features beautiful retro-classic black & white cinematography by Director of Photography Gary Lindsay.

Keanu Reeves is completely wooden in this romantic misfire by Alfonso Arau (Like Water for Chocolate). Reeves plays a World War II vet who hits the road as a traveling salesman and agrees to help a desperate, pregnant woman (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon)--who is afraid to let her father (Giancarlo Giannini) see her condition--by pretending to be her husband. Most of the story takes place in the old man's vineyard, and Arau makes a life of swollen fruit, grape-stomping, sunlight, and tan flesh that looks amazingly erotic. But there are plenty of sillier distractions, such as the sight of farm hands chasing insects with flapping gossamer wings attached to their arms. Reeves is terribly self-conscious, while stalwart Anthony Quinn is memorable as the damsel's benevolent grandfather. --Tom Keogh

Description

After returning from World War II, a young G.I. (Keanu Reeves) finds he has little in common with the wife he left behind. Disillusioned, he heads north to work as a travelling salesman where he meets the daughter (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon) of a wealthy vineyard owner (Giancarlo Giannini). On her way home, she is unmarried and pregnant. The young man gallantly offers to help by posing as her husband for one night, unaware that doing so will change both of their lives forever.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful! They don't make them like this anymore........2007-06-10

Do not pay attention to all those negative comments. This movie is simply a delight to watch. The story, the photography and the music are simply beautiful. I've watched it several times and continue to enjoy it. The spreading of the heat on the grapes with the butterfly-like wings and the grape stumping are my favorite scenes.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-06-02

Hubby saw this 1st and then insisted I watch too! Glad I did!! It is an excellent movie, despite views posted by others. It has depth, great photography and just a general all around GREAT movie. I loved it!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic.......2007-05-18

The first time I watched this movie was at the theater. I thought the scenery had been painted. After all, no where on earth looks like that, right? Then I went to Napa for myself and, surprise!

I watch this movie a few times every year. The scenery is beautiful but so is the story. What orphan wouldn't want to be part of this wine-producing family? The grandfather is the star of the movie in my opinion. The female lead is luminous. Keannu's understated performance is well-suited to the character of a veteran shell-shocked from war and finding out that his war bride didn't care enough to read all the letters he sent her during the war.

If you want to know the definition of chivalry, watch and learn.

One of my two favorite movies of all time. I suddenly feel like going home, turning out the lights, snuggling up to my wife on the couch, and watching this work of art another time! I suggest you do the same.

5 out of 5 stars So Romantic!.......2007-05-17

This movie is so romantic. Keanu Reeves is gorgeous. The Mexican family in this movie is such a treat to watch. I love the family dynamics and the fact that poor Keanu has no family and he wants to belong. The scenery of the vynard is spectacular.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Love Story...........2007-04-28

Keanu Reeves is a World War II veteran and a traveling salesman on a bus when he meets a pregnant woman (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon) on her way to Napa Valley to help her family with the grape harvest. She needs someone to pretend to be her husband at her family's vineyard, the ex-soldier agrees. However, her father can sense something is not right about the story and tries to prove that his daughter is hiding the real truth.

This movie is a mystical romance based on a 1942 Italian film of the same name.

I really enjoyed this movie...although it did bring tears to my eyes.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great movie.......2007-06-13

This is a great movie, one of my son's favorites. Very cute. The puppets are alot nicer than some previous videos. There are also alot of cool, new images in it. It's a nice, soothing video for bed time or if your kids are totally wound up and need to calm down.

5 out of 5 stars Baby Galileo, Just Outstanding.......2007-06-03

Baby Einstein is a wonderful new line of videos to aid in your child's development. Get them off to a very good start with these videos, and this special one, Baby Galileo. Get them well on the way to a successful future now! Don't wait!

5 out of 5 stars one of the best.......2007-05-26

I'd say that Baby Galileo and Baby Mozart have the nicest music selection of the series. In Baby Galileo, the puppet work is pretty good, and my 10-month old daughter loves the balloons in particular. One caveat: the International Astronomical Union (IAU) no longer considers Pluto to be a planet (at least not a major planet appropriate to be listed with M,V,E,M,J,S,U,N). Perhaps Disney ought to modify this video.

5 out of 5 stars "Galaxy" is my 2-year-old's new favorite word!.......2007-05-26

We checked this out of the library (as we do with most kids' videos before buying...finding something my son likes is pretty "hit-and-miss"), and my 2-year-old was engaged from beginning to end. He's so fascinated by the moon and stars that I thought he may like it...I was right! My 9-month-old was fascinated by it, too. It has a lot of great REAL images of stars, planets, clouds, and the moon...and not as much "puppet action" as most other Baby Einstein videos. I really like this one as much as our kids do. I've ordered this video and am excited to watch it again and again with both our boys!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful just great........2007-05-12

I bought this for my nephew and he is wild about it. He is 3 now and has out grown the series. Except this one. He has to watch it everyday and he is wants to watch anything he can on planets and space. This is wonderful with actual pics of the plants. I actually told my college astromony teacher about it and he used it in class. That was an interesting day. I recommend this to everyone.

Deadlier than a nest of vipers and twistier than a mountain road--it's Poirot: The Movie Collection. Agatha Christie's supersleuth (played by David Suchet) is a proper, precise little man who cannot bring himself to eat hard-boiled eggs of different sizes, but it is exactly this obsession with detail that leads him to solve the five baffling cases presented in this boxed set. A lady's shoe buckle, a broken coffee cup, a poison dart pipe: these are the ingredients with which Christie brewed her classic mysteries, and the producers of these video adaptations pay an equal attention to detail in re-creating the stories on the small screen. Stunning aerial shots of England's coast and countryside are matched by elegant and elaborate costumes, particularly when it comes to ladies' headgear. Of course, nothing can outshine the fine performances of Suchet (who makes Poirot's fussy habits endearing and delivers wisecracks with unparalleled subtlety) and his supporting cast; Captain Hastings (Hugh Fraser), Miss Lemon (Pauline Moran), and Chief Inspector Japp (Philip Jackson) add comic relief and camaraderie to the proceedings.

The DVD transfers are generally crisp in both picture and sound quality. Special features include biographies of Suchet and Christie, Poirot trivia questions, and a filmography of all the Agatha Christie's Poirot episodes. --Larisa Lomacky Moore

5 out of 5 stars Suchet is the penultimate Poirot.......2006-11-12

Makes you hope no one else takes on the role since now it has been done to perfection. Love the music and the style. The fashions and the cars are great. The English atmosphere is adorable.

5 out of 5 stars Best Poirot Box Set.......2005-01-12

I just love it. Agatha Christie was purely a genius. You can never guess who the murdurer is. It seems impossible at first, but all the clues just make sense after Poirot leads us through the whole thing.

4 out of 5 stars A truly priceless piece of mystery and television!.......2004-03-16

First of all, an explanation on the lack of a full 5-star rating. Despite the content, this was not Acorn Media's finest product, picture-wise. Oh, the content is outstanding, but the picture throughout most of the episodes was a bit grainy and sometimes you could easily see lines on the screen. Again, not the best effor I've ever seen, but don't let that detract from your enjoyment of the content itself.

Simply the finest piece of work to come out of television in the history of the medium. Agatha Christie's work comes to life with the brilliant acting of David Suchet as the brilliant Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. Equally superb acting from supporting cast members Philip Jackson as Chief Inspector Japp, and from Hugh Fraser as Captain Hastings. Also, look for Pauline Moran and a wonderfully charming Miss Lemmon. The episodes are well-translated from the original books, the parts acted out with humor, wit, charm, and historical integrity.

The DVDs themselves are also full of some great extra features, like biographies of the cast, lore from the world of Poirot (including quizzes), and a nice section on Agatha Christie herself. It is truly amazing to find something as totally wonderful and completely re-watchable as the Poirot series. The movies will have you begging for more. And don't worry, mystery fans, Acorn Media vastly cleaned up the quality of the picture i the second set. Still, a must-have for mystery lovers, for British television and movie lovers, and those that enjoy quality viewing on their own screens. Intrigue, puzzles, humor, and charm... it doesn't get much better than this!

5 out of 5 stars Television at Its Very Best.......2004-02-29

"Agatha Christie's Poirot," based on the English author's popular detective stories, is a superbly made series. The subtle plots, the direction, the acting, the settings and costumes, even the music that so perfectly evokes the atmosphere and mood of each story, are all of the finest quality. English character actor David Suchet is simply perfect as the slightly eccentric Belgian police inspector-turned-private detective Hercule Poirot, and each actor - from Hugh Fraser and Philip Jackson as Captain Hastings (Poirot's "Watson") and the likeably gruff Chief Inspector Japp, to the most minor players in the various episodes - gives a detailed, multi-dimensional portrayal.
The box set includes five full-length (103 minute) episodes. I must state right away that my two favorites are THE ABC MURDERS and THE MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR AT STYLES, but that the other three are every bit as fine. DEATH IN THE CLOUDS, set in France and England, concerns the murder of Madame Giselle, a ruthless moneylender and blackmailer, during an airplane flight from Paris to London. Japp concludes that the woman was killed by a poison dart found on the floor near her seat, but Poirot has other ideas - particularly when he finds himself suspected! The episode features an interesting relationship between Poirot and a young air stewardess who assists him in his investigation. There are also atmospheric shots of Monmartre and stylish art deco interior settings, plus a hilarious scene in which Poirot conducts an "experiment" aboard the plane, which shows Suchet's flair for comedy.
Suchet himself has called THE ABC MURDERS his personal favorite of the "Poirot" episodes, and I can understand why. It is a wonderful human drama about a lonely epileptic who is suspected of being a serial murderer. Is it possible for a person to commit a crime without being aware of it? This is the question the story asks. However, the denouement may surprise you. I must add that the scene in which Poirot visits the suspect in prison is a highlight, with riveting acting from Suchet and Donald Sumpter as the poor, accused man. ONE, TWO BUCKLE MY SHOE, which begins with the murder of Mr. Morley, a dentist, comments on the British class system. The opening sequence foreshadowing the shooting death of Morley is extremely eerie. At the end of the episode, having successfully found the common link between three murders, Poirot and Japp realize that it is "the little chaps" who are really important to the welfare of society. ("But," Poirot adds, "there are no little chaps, Chief Inspector...particularly not Poirot.")
In PERIL AT END HOUSE, a young heiress' life has been threatened by a series of strange accidents. Poirot takes the case in order to protect her...but is it really she who needs protecting? The English seaside setting of this episode is beautiful, as is the score, composed by Richard Hewson. THE MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR AT STYLES was the first of the Hercule Poirot stories and also the first "Poirot" episode. It is 1917, and Lieutenant Hastings has been discharged from the Army because of an injury. To recuperate he goes to the country estate of a friend, John Cavendish. John's mother has married a much younger man whom everyone else in the household dislikes. When she is murdered, Hastings joins forces with Hercule Poirot, a Belgian refugee living nearby, to uncover the truth. It is interesting to see the characters in an Edwardian (rather than a 1920's or 1930's) setting, and also to see how the masterly characterizations of Hugh Fraser, Philip Jackson, and (especially) David Suchet were perfectly in place even at this early stage in the series. As in the other episodes, all of the different elements in this one - direction, acting, sets, costumes, lighting, music, camera angles - come together to create an absorbing drama. There are several particularly memorable moments. One is the scene in which Poirot and Hastings are looking for clues in the deceased woman's room; though there is not much action here, the music and the camera shots make the scene riveting. In a later and most touching scene, Hastings proposes marriage to a young woman living in the house and is gently rejected. Soon after, Poirot, impatient to find the "last link in this most mysterious case," is building card houses to steady his mind, so that he might think clearly and logically. Then Hastings makes a remark that suggests the "last link" to Poirot, who suddenly jumps up and goes racing excitedly from the house. One knows here that he is about to "crack the case." And finally, there is the big "explanation scene," in which Poirot explains the surprising truth to all assembled. When STYLES ended, I found myself exclaiming, "Superb!" The same word could be used to describe the entire series. "Agatha Christie's Poirot" is television at its very best.

5 out of 5 stars Poirot in Bulk.......2003-03-06

Both my sister and my mother have read almost every mystery that Agatha Christie ever wrote, but I never thought to start. Then I sat down one evening to watch television with them, and I was at once enchanted. It was an episode of Agatha Christie's Poirot on A&E. The David Suchet Poirot films (both full length movies and short films) come from this series. I enjoyed that first show so much that I watched the series religiously until it went off the air.

I started reading some of Agatha Christie's mysteries this year, and I firmly believe that David Suchet is the best portrayal of Hercule Poirot that ever was. I have seen other notorious actors, such as Peter Ustinov and Tony Randall, play the part, but they do not achieve the full embodiment of the persona (both physical and psychological) that David Suchet does.

The five movies that come is this set - THE ABC MURDERS; DEATH IN THE CLOUDS; THE MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR AT STYLES; ONE, TWO, BUCKLE MY SHOE, and PERIL AT END HOUSE - are all excellent films. They exhibit Agatha Christie's wide range of talent with their variety in plot. In THE ABC MURDERS, someone is killing off seemingly random people and leaving railroad guides behind. In DEATH IN THE CLOUDS, the murder is committed in an airplane with Poirot on it. The list goes on, and I don't want to spoil anything for those interested in this set.

If you have never seen a Poirot before and are uneasy about spending so much money on something new, I would recommend any of the other David Suchet Poirot films to try out first. They are all incredibly interesting, exciting mysteries to watch.

Spanning a lively decade in the career of one of Hollywood's greatest stars, The James Cagney Signature Collection highlights Cagney's versatility beyond the gangster roles he was best known for. You won't find any of Jimmy's hard-boiled classics in this five-disc set, but you'll find plenty to enjoy, with each film given the care and respect we've come to expect from Warner Bros.' archival DVD releases. From the World War I heroism of The Fighting 69th to the musical extravaganza The West Point Story, these five films represent fully one-third of Cagney's movie output from 1940 to 1950, and they're all above-average showcases for Cagney's enduring appeal. For sheer entertainment value, the best of the bunch is 1940's Torrid Zone, a still-delightful comedy teaming Jimmy with his best pal Pat O'Brien and Hollywood's "Oomph Girl," Ann Sheridan, in a savvy send-up of tropical adventure. Cagney loved working with O'Brien (who also costars in The Fighting 69th), and this collection also highlights Cagney's generous penchant for surrounding himself with some of Hollywood's best-loved character actors, like George Tobias, Alan Hale (Sr. and Jr.), George Brent, and others. And while 1941's The Bride Came C.O.D. teamed Cagney and Bette Davis for the second and final time (resulting in a breezy comedy that shows both stars at their most endearing), 1942's Captains of the Clouds is a standard-yet-sturdy example of Hollywood's wartime patriotism, with Cagney (in his first Technicolor feature) as a seasoned pilot recruited into the Royal Canadian Air Force. The latest film in this batch, 1950's The West Point Story, was conspicuously promoted to capitalize on Cagney's Oscar-winning role in 1942's Yankee Doodle Dandy, and while it's the most dated movie in this set, it's still got plenty to offer in terms of Cagney's unique style of showmanship.

As with previous Signature Collections, Warner Bros. has done a spectacular job of bringing these films to DVD. Picture and sound quality are uniformly superb throughout, and each film is accompanied by a variety of "Night at the Movies" short subjects, specifically organized to approximate the experience of seeing these films in their original theatrical context. Vintage newsreels, Warner Bros. cartoons (both "Looney Tunes" and/or "Merrie Melodies"), documentary shorts, and movie trailers are all included here, some seen for the first time in decades and chronologically corresponding to the feature presentation. No other studio cares for its library as passionately as Warner Bros., and The James Cagney Signature Collection is further proof that there's a wide and appreciative audience for DVD sets that showcase great stars while honoring Hollywood's history and the nostalgic pleasure of "a night at the movies." --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A Collector's Find.......2007-06-30

I'm a serious collector of movies. Not only does this collection contain movies not available before on DVD, it also contains many cartoons and short subjects which were not previously available on DVD. I highly recommend this collection.

5 out of 5 stars Cagney at his best.......2007-05-23

Cagney from a bygone Hollywood era appears asgeless and timeless in this series. J.C. was one of the movies all time greats and this Cagney series is what Hollywood should be producing today. Cagney,Stewart. Wayne, Fonda (Henry that is ) and Bogart knew how to make movies that pleased their audiences. This Cagney series is a collectors treasure that every move buff will want to have in their collecton. This is a buy, AND HOW !!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars What about the other Cagney films by Warner that aren't even on VHS?.......2007-05-21

I'm happy enough with this collection, but this is not the top tier of Cagney films. The best of the bunch is "The Fighting 69th" and "Torrid Zone", which just happens to feature the on-screen rapport of Cagney and Pat O'Brien. "Captains of the Clouds" is a good enough if uneven film with a very good performance by Cagney taking his tough-guy persona into war. "The Bride Came C.O.D." and "West Point Story" would be pretty forgettable story-wise if it were not for Cagney's performances. "West Point Story" is actually a musical. With the exception of "West Point Story", these films were all made around 1940, which doesn't give you as good a view of Cagney's evolution as an actor as this set could have if the selection had come from the full twenty year plus period that Cagney was making films now under the control of Warner Home Video.

The problem is, as others have mentioned, that many of Cagney's best known films controlled by Warner Brothers are already boxed up in The Warner Gangsters, Warner Legends, Tough Guys, and even the Busby Berkeley (Footlight Parade) and Henry Fonda Signature (Mr. Roberts) collections. However, there are many great Cagney titles that I'm pretty sure Warner Bros. still has the DVD rights to that we havent seen yet. Among the ones I'm looking for are Cagney's pre-codes including "Blonde Crazy", "Picture Snatcher", and "Taxi!". "Picture Snatcher" and "Taxi!" aren't even on VHS. From the 1950's Warner Bros. controls the rights to "Come Fill the Cup" and "These Wilder Years", neither of which are on VHS, but are great showcases of Cagney's talent in more mature roles. Warner Bros. also controls the already mentioned and essential "Oklahoma Kid" and "Strawberry Blonde". The only thing I can figure is that (a) The pre-codes are perhaps going to be part of the next planned "Forbidden Hollywood" collection and/or (b) there is a volume two of Cagney's films planned. I just hope that in the case of Cagney films put on DVD by Warner Home Video in the future that commentary is included. The lack of it in this set is really my chief complaint.

In summary, if you are a Cagney completist, then by all means get this set. If you are looking for more definitive Cagney films and a better introduction to the actor's work, then start with the Warner Gangsters and then the Tough Guy collections.

4 out of 5 stars James Cagney - The Signature Collection.......2007-05-14

A nice collection of James Cagney movies that promotes support for our troops during the early wars. Not his typical gangster movie. A nice change.

3 out of 5 stars More current bonus features.......2007-05-08

I like the movies that are included, but I've seen them before on TCM. I don't really care about vintage short subjects. I wish there were more current special features like current documentaries about the movies that are in the set or commentaries on the movies. That was why when selecting a box set to purchase this month, I got the Tyrone Power set since he is another of my favorite actors.

4 out of 5 stars Christmas Classic in the Making.......2007-02-20

This comedy is as gentle as a cloud, but has much more substance; mistaken identity, quirky characters, a bit of mayhem, and cute kids. This is a movie that can be enjoyed by a wide range of ages. It was great to see Native Americans portrayed in such positive and clever ways. Keep an eye out for the runaway mouse. He and the vegan chef provide some of the biggest laughts in this delightful comedy.

A fun, feel-good movie, great for watching during the Christmas season.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful feel-good Christmas diversion!.......2007-01-16

Beautiful scenery (Robert Redford's Utah property) and a charming group of Native American actors make this a "different" Christmas story for the whole family.

5 out of 5 stars All Sun Dance Awards Deserved!.......2007-01-10

Finally, a movie that isn't too much of anything--except for just completely enjoyable! What this movie isn't:

Not too serious
Not too funny
Not too sexual
Not too hard to follow
Not too many special effects
Not too long
No hidden messages
No politcal agenda

...you get the idea. If you want to sit back and watch a harmless holiday movie (not really what I would call a Christmas Classic, the holiday was more of a back drop and wasn't leaned on in any way for the story), and just be entertained without all the hub-bub then this is your movie! The charaters are so easy to understand and follow and care about and the story moves along at a perfectly steady pace. I never broke my spleen laughing but was happily amused throught the picture, which to me is a much greater feat for a movie!!! Not sure what to compare this too, it really has an original feel to it and is definitely what I would call a hidden gem as far as movies go...it was SOOOOO nice to have watched a movie and been given that warm fuzzy afterwards. Thank you to the everyone that had anything to do with the production of this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas in the Clouds.......2007-01-10

This is a special comedy romance story. You have to see it more than once to get all the humor that is in it. This movie deserves better recognition than it has gotten.

I highly recommend everyone watching this special video.

If movies were solely about the cheap pleasure of watching gorgeous people make grand gestures in epic circumstances--because, sure, sometimes movies are--director/screenwriter John Duigan's goopy, obvious, overwrought contemplation of how global unrest really messes with your love life would be Oscar-worthy. Charlize Theron, Stuart Townsend, and Penelope Cruz are headstrong 1930s playthings who each discover that they need to pull their attractive heads out of their inviting behinds if they're going to play a part in stopping the spread of European fascism. Charlize is socialite Gilda, who ensnares both brooding, Cambridge-educated Irishman Townsend and Spanish rebel Cruz (who is particularly ill-defined) in a love triangle while seemingly caring not a whit for the imminent goosesteps of the Nazis. Charlize wears a lot of fabulous outfits, and she and real-life paramour Townsend do impetuous things like sport fedoras while romping in a milky-white bathtub; Cruz, meanwhile, performs a passionate impromptu striptease. Hey, there are worse ways to be entertained. Unfortunately, you don't really give a damn about any of them, and you can predict what's going to happen to all of them well before it actually does. It's an efficient, glamorous, hokey, ultimately downbeat time-killer for anyone willing to spend two hours trying to decide which of the doe-eyed trio you'd save from destruction first. --Steve Wiecking

Description

As war clouds gather over Europe, a free-spirited socialite and her two lovers live a life of pleasure and privilege until the Spanish Civil War tears them apart. Starring Charlize Theron and Penelope Cruz.

3 out of 5 stars Watch for Stuart - not for the movie.......2007-06-10

I thought this movie was okay, but nothing to get too worked up about. It's a sad tale, one that only gets sadder as the time passes by. Stuart is wonderful - I'm glad a friend recommended this to me - but most of the love scenes never really went anywhere, I didn't think. However, that said, it is worth it to see this movie at least once for the bathtub scene with Stuart & Charlize. Those hats make it very sexy, and her necktie. And, the scene near the end where Stuart pounces on her - that was HOT!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars pleeeezz charleeeezz.......2006-12-24

One has to wonder how a film so bad can be made with so many fine things about it. I see from other reviews that the really horrible actor Stewart Townsend is Charlize Theron's boyfriend. She won an Academy Award so she got to demand his inclusion probably. He cannot act and he utterly cannot imagine what it would be like to be the man he plays in this movie. He has sex with the Charleezz character often. That he knows how to do. And Charlize probably ignored direction because her acting is utterly unaffecting. The beautiful wonderful Penelope Cruz is underused. No gorgeous closeups of her gorgeous face and she dies early. Is this the fault a dumb director/writer, John Dagan? The cinamentography is lovely. The costumes are fine. The story is ok as well. Its just shown in a way that is as boring as it can be and we probably have Charlizzzzz to thank for that for dragging in her idiot boyfriend and rejecting direction. Come to think of it, I havent seen much by her lately.

1 out of 5 stars Theron should have to return her Oscar for this .......2006-08-21

Bad, bad, bad movie. Bad. Insipid acting (particularly on Theron's part), horrible writing, it's unbelieveable, paper-thin and most of it is truly boring, despite the backdrop of war, death, Nazis and Paris. It takes a genuine lack of talent to be able to pull that off. While the costuming and the soundtrack are fantastic, the movie looks like it's been set on a soundstage producers would use in the 40's, I had a hard time believing most of the sets were on locatio, and they just looked fake. And the ending, pooh. By that time, you barely care about the characters and hope the thing just ends quickly. A very irritating a cheesy movie, it tries desperately to be aloof and melodramatic at the same time. Ugh.

4 out of 5 stars Head in the Clouds.......2006-06-12

I really enjoyed the movie's writing and overall story. However while some of the filming locations are stunning and unique, some sets seemed just a bit too clean and almost back Hollywood lot-ish. But I am just knit picking, it's a sad, romantic, pretty movie, that any romantic would enjoy.

2 out of 5 stars Head In The Clouds Is A Very Appropriate Title For This Movie.......2006-05-26

Charlize Theron, her real life boyfriend Stuart Townsend, and Penelope Cruz are all nice to look at, and have at times shown considerable tlane in their work, Theron having won as Osca for her role in Monster.

But Head In The Clouds is one of those beautifully filmed films starring a beautiful cast that trying to stay beautiful in an increasingly ugly world, particularly Europe in the 1930s. From the Spanish Civil War to World War II, the stories of these three people who share a Paris flat together is supposed to be a sweeping tragedy that shows how world events and fate can conspire to thwart true love.

Instead, it shows how silly things can be when you mix hedonism, narcissism, social responsbility, and sheer stupidity. You end up caring less about the characters, andwondering more how much more trouble will they get themselves in. This was a pretty stylish waste of time for everyone involved.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-06-24

If you are a pilot or aviation buff, then you have to own this one.I really enjoyed watching this movie, the scenery, the planes and James Cagney was himself, just like his other movies, fast talking and fun to watch,so if you are looking for an interesting and colorful movie with great looking airplanes, then this is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Old-Fashioned But Interesting History Lesson.......2007-06-02

This is definitely a period piece, but well-done and in color as well. It would be of most interest to film buffs but it deals with some interesting history as well.

I write this partly from the perspective of a family interest in the Commonwealth Air Training program which is the focus of the last half of the film and which has many shots of the real personnel. I hoped that I might see my father in this (but didn't). This program was the major source of aircrew for the British Allies, and since the US didn't enter the war until late 1941, and Western Europe was defeated or collaborating, that's all there were fighting the Nazis for quite some time.

It was interesting to see the real Billy Bishop, the WWI Canadian fighter ace and then Marshall of the Air Force addressing actual graduating cadets who hailed from all over the world, not just the old Commonwealth, and included many Americans who volunteered before the US entered the war. It was sobering to realize that these young men were probably in combat by the time the film was released and that some were already dead.

As a plane buff it was great to see the old planes, in large quantity on actual air bases.

This is an early technicolor film and the dvd transfer is of good visual quality. The photography over the Northern Ontario lakes is very scenic. The sound is ok but they didn't have Dolby or even stereo then, did they.

Cagne is an acquired taste which I never acquired. Still he jumps off the screen as a character actor and dominates every scene he is in. With regard to his dislike of the role, the biography of Hal Wallis, the producer, makes no mention of this in his biography and he was usually often frank about his problems with stars. I couldn't find the Yiddish part but he put on an over-the-top Irish accent as he flew near Ireland.

There are some good extras on the dvd as well.

Tough, gritty, slick only Cagney could pull it off. Good story line on a man helping out his unsuspecting friend.

5 out of 5 stars One of my Favorite James Cagney Films.......2003-11-03

This is one of my favorite James Cagney films because it somehow manages to intertwine an intricate plot into a very simple and patriotic story. More important however, it relies on one of my favorite film themes, that of the protagonist (Cagney) not making the transition from one era of personal glory into the next era where he becomes a stranger in his own world which has changed all around him. This film got two Academy Awards nominations for Interior Decoration (Ted Smith - Art Direction, Casey Roberts - Interior Decoration) and Color Cinematography (Sol Polito). Director Michael Curtiz visually does an excellent job with this script. It starts off in the beautifully filmed Canadian wilderness with Cagney in his usual reckless tough guy form. These early images stand for the strong individual nature of James Cagney's character Brian MacLean that is in itself based on the Cagney mystique. Gradually, MacLean and the other two main characters Johnny Dutton (Dennis Morgan) and Emily Foster (Brenda Marshall) make gradual transitions to reveal personality growth, stagnation and hidden revelations. This is a wartime film made in 1942 and the film intertwines the plot with patriotic sentiment quite nicely but stresses the practicality of creating and maintaining a proficient and professional military force if the job is to get done. The entire cast is wonderful and includes Alan Hale, George Tobias and Gig Young. Composer Max Steiner also once again turns in an insightful and intelligent score. There are some great flying scenes full of bravado, daring do and just plain out foolhardiness with Cagney leading his cronies in and out of the doghouse. This is a very entertaining film.

Description

Explore Kilimanjaro—the breathtaking island in the sky.

At 20,000 feet, Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest peak and also the world's tallest volcano. Rising through a shroud of mist and clouds, Kilimanjaro floats like a mirage above the African savannah. A trek up its steep flanks takes climbers through five different worlds of climate and vegetation, ranging from rainforest near the bottom to arctic ramparts of ice surrounding a rocky crater at the peak.

Kilimanjaro is not only a nature-lover's paradise, but also a tantalizing mystery for many scientists. The glacier atop the mountain has shrunk by over a third in the last decade due to global warming, and could disappear altogether by 2015. And although classified as dormant, Kilimanjaro has begun to stir, and evidence suggests that a massive landslide could rip open the side of the mountain causing a cataclysmic flow of hot gases and rock, similar to Mount St. Helens.

NOVA takes an unusual expedition to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro to investigate these two scientific mysteries, and to explore the unique beauty of this "island in the sky." Joining NOVA on this breathtaking adventure is African-born naturalist Robin Buxton, who was disabled by polio at age two, and who now dreams of summiting a mountain he has long studied.

Special DVD features include: materials and activities for educators; a link to the NOVA Web site; scene selections; closed captions; and described video for the visually impaired.

4 out of 5 stars Fairly realistic.......2007-01-10

Though we enjoyed the IMAX Kilimanjaro film, it fairly well glossed over the difficulties of climbing the mountain, and pretty much ignored the porters who labor climbers up the mountain. This Nova special is a bit more realistic, and brought back memories of my Kili climb two years ago. The scripting is a bit hokey, and they use the term "high altitude mountaineering" with annoying regularity... "high altitude trekking" would be more accurate. At any rate, it's an interesting film, and discusses the problems on the mountain associated with global warming and climate change. The quality isn't IMAX, but it's still pretty good, and worth having a look.

    Product Description

The Dust Bowl is an important piece of American history that had many contributing factors, such as The Great Depression, poor farming practices, and the promise of wealth. Farmers moved to the Midwest in search of arable land and set up huge wheat and grain farms. Things worked out fine for a few years, but eventually the lack of water resources and the overworking of the field led the entire region to be dominated by large clouds of dust or dust storms. Almost all of the pioneer farmers, despite aid from the US government, were forced to migrate from the Great Plains of the Midwest. Table of Contents: (1) The Plow That Broke The Plains (1936) - This film is part of the 1999 National Film Registry of "artistically, culturally, and socially significant" films. It takes a realistic look at how farming in the Midwest turned the land into an uninhabitable cloud of dust, later coined "The Dust Bowl" 25 minutes (2) Rain For The Earth (Incomplete ~ No Ending) (1937) - Discusses the desperation that the drying land caused the Dust Bowl farmers and their families and the US government's failed attempts to help them maintain their farms - 10 minutes (3) Farmers War Against Dust; Fight To Save Wheat Crops (1937) - Newsreel footage of the farmers struggle against dust in the Midwest sponsored by an engine company who claims that their new engine and well drilling system will save the farmers of the Midwest 1 ½ minutes

Classic Musicals from the Dream Factory is a five-film collection of enjoyable but not-quite-top-tier movies from MGM's peak period between the mid-1940s and mid-'50s. The best films are the two with Gene Kelly. In Summer Stock (1950), he teams with Judy Garland in a traditional "let's put on a show" setting. Garland was in her last MGM film, but she shares a tap duel with Kelly and performs one of her most famous routines, "Get Happy" in a black jacket and fedora. It's Always Fair Weather (1955) features Kelly alongside Dan Dailey and Michael Kidd as three GIs who return from the war, a plot reminiscent of On the Town, another Kelly collaboration with Stanley Donen. The songs aren't much, but highlights include the three GIs' trash-can-lid dance, Cyd Charisse's solo supported by a crew of boxers, and Kelly's number on roller skates, "I Like Myself." Ziegfeld Follies (1946) follows the format of a revue, with a wisp of a plot (producer Florenz Ziegfeld is in heaven imagining his dream revue; he's played by William Powell, who had played the character 10 years earlier in The Great Ziegfeld) and a bunch of diverse musical numbers: Fred Astaire's dances with Charisse, Lucille Bremer, and Gene Kelly (their only screen collaboration till That's Entertainment II in 1976); a water number with Esther Williams; and songs by Judy Garland, Lena Horne, and Kathryn Grayson. Also following the revue format is Till the Clouds Roll By (1946), which features famous performances by Frank Sinatra ("Ol' Man River"), Lena Horne ("Can't Help Lovin' That Man"), and Judy Garland ("Look for the Silver Lining"). Interspersed among the numbers is a lackluster biography of songwriter Jerome Kern. For a more traditional songwriter biography, try Three Little Words (1950), starring Astaire and Red Skelton as Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby, respectively, whose Tin Pan Alley and Broadway songs include "Who's Sorry Now," "My Sunny Tennessee," "I Wanna Be Loved by You," and the title tune. Vera-Ellen is an excellent partner for Astaire, and a young Debbie Reynolds appears as Boop-a-Doop girl Helen Kane.

All the discs are supplemented by new featurettes and classic shorts and cartoons. Deserving special mention is Till the Clouds Roll By, which has been available for years on inferior public-domain DVDs. This version has the best picture by far, and also offers musical outtakes by Judy Garland and Kathryn Grayson. --David Horiuchi

    5 out of 5 stars Great Movies.......2007-05-14

    Terrific prices. Wonderful musicals.

Good response. Prompt delivery. Excellent condition.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect, but not quite.......2006-05-31

It is wonderful to see these films finally being released on DVD! The prints are bright, colorful and clean and the soundtracks are sound better than ever. The films themselves are a treasure without any added attractions. However, since so much emphasis is put on special features, let me say that they aren't what they could be for these movies. Consider what the "Zeigfeld Follies" laser disc offered in the way of extras. There is a great deal of original pre-recorded music available from that film, so why not include more or all of it? One disturbing trend I noticed on the short documentaries is a change in the ratio of the screen image. After all of the talk about restoration and letterbox, why show clips in wide screen when the original films were not produced in wide screen. The presentation and restoration of classic films has become so much more important to viewers over the past two decades. Let's don't take steps backwards.

    5 out of 5 stars What a deal.......2006-04-26

Although this has been called a mixed bag by some, for the price, you just can't go wrong. Judy & Gene doing the "Portland Fancy" and Judy singing "Get Happy" from "Summer Stock"; Lena Horne singing numbers from "Show Boat," the musical she should have been in; Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire doing their only real on-screen duet in "Ziegfeld Follies" (they pretty much just walked through "That's Entertainment 2"); all these priceless musical numbers must be seen to be believed, all in glowing and restored technicolor. Lots of fun extras as well.

5 out of 5 stars a great bunch of films AND DVDs!!!.......2006-04-03

I was lucky enough to preview this set recently and am happy to report that the other folks expecting WB's normal fine print quality will not be dissapointed...they look wonderful. As is the custom at WB there are many extras on each DVD as well. Others have listed them...outakes, vintage clips and featurettes...so I won't re-list those but comment on the new 15 minute featurettes on each film. Well, unlike the dissapointing (IMHO) Busby Berkely bonus featurettes..these are well made, informative and VERY entertaining...probably due to the much higher quality of interviewees....like the ever present Garland expert John Fricke. Current sizzling hot Broadway choreographer and director Casey Nicholaw, who lends his expertise on Summer Stock and It's always fair weather. Susan Stroman , director of the recent movie "The Producers, ads a fresh take on It's always fair weather as well.
The absolute gem (again IMHO) however is the Oscar and Grammy winning songwriter of Mary Poppins, Chitty, Chitty Bang Bang and so many more Richard M Sherman. Mr Sherman's thoughts about Jerome Kern (Till the Clouds Roll By) and Kalmar & Ruby (Three Little Words)go much further than the normal "college professors" on other DVDs. As those two movies are about songwriters...who better than one of the all time greats to comment and frankly he seems to be much more than a hired gun , but an actual fan of these writers and very familiar with their work, lives and the movies in question...raising the bar substantially due to his participation.
