It is about damn time this movie is released on DVD. For those of you who havent seen this outstanding film, it is a horror movie for kids that like a lot of 80s movies really pushes the envelope with a pg13 rating. Next to Goonies this is without question the best action/suspense movie ever made for kids. It has humor, scares and a little gore for the adults. Buy it. You will thank me.

I can't thank Lionsgate and the cast and crew enough for bringing back my favorite childhood movie. This movie has so much character!! I bought the VHS a few years ago on ebay but was disappointed with the conditon it was in. Now I can't wait to get my hands on the 20th anniversary edition. yippie!!!

Yes, this is a great fun picture, but the added extra is the bombastic and emtionally-charged orchestral score composed and conducted by Bruce Broughton (Silverado, Young Sherlock Holmes, etc.). Can't wait to hear it finally on DVD.

Monster Squad Has Nards!.......2007-06-30

When I look back on the decade that I grew up in {The 1980s} afew things come to mind.Bad Hair Styles and Great Movies.
I know most people who think of 80s movies usually think E.T.,Gremlins,Ghost Busters,Back to Future,John Hughes and Nightmare on Elm Street.Myself being one of them...but ontop of all those I think MONSTER SQUAD!!
The MS came out when I was 12 years old {pretty much the same age as the squad themselves} and it instantly became apart of my childhood that I will always cherish.The film just has Movie Magic,it has memorable kids,funny lines,good special effects and all the classic universal monsters,what more could a kid ask for in a fun adventure movie.
Its too bad this movie never got the respect that the goonies got,it does have its core audience though,but I rarely hear anybody say MS is one of there favorite 80s films.
Welp since I never hear it Im here to say it:THE MONSTER SQUAD IS NOT ONLY ONE OF MY FAVORTIE 80S FILMS,ITS ONE OF MY FAVORITE FILMS EVER AND this DvD is a blessing.TMS Kicks alot of Monster Butt!!

Everybody has favorite movies from their childhood. I grew up in the 80s (was born right in 1980 to be exact), and that decade produced some of the best pop culture phenomenons of all time. The Monster Squad is a rare, often completely overlooked gem from that decade which, to those who have seen it, is just as wonderful as the more "popular" Goonies, Ghostbusters, and Gremlins (to name a few) movies. Simply stated, I adore this film.

The film holds up remarkably well: it's funny because it's well-written, not because it's corny and dated. The kid stars, none of whom are really famous now, were all excellent and deliver their lines with great comic timing. This is not a "so bad it's good" type of movie: this is the real deal; genuinely funny, scary, and complete with excellent makeup effects by Stan Winston. I also love this movie because not everyone's seen it, like some of the aforementioned 80s films, and it's great to be able to recommend a film from this time period that a large cult following considers a classic to friends.

I have a VHS tape of THe Monster Squad (a prized possession), purchased probably in 1988 or 89, and the video is extremely faded from countless multiple viewings. In fact, it may be my single
"most watched" movie, and I can quote it almost line by line.

I don't remember ever seeing any behind the scenes specials on the film, so I'm looking forward to those the most, not to mention a remastered digital version of the greatest "kids vs. monsters" movie of all time!

"It's a spider, with a human head. It eats dogs, and cats...and rabbits..."

So many quotes, so little time. Go out, find your "Stephen King Rules" shirt, make sure there's no Mummy in your closet, guard your twinkie from the Creature, and watch The Monster Squad on July 24th. You will NOT be disappointed.

Maverick director Michael Winterbottom wondered about the double standard of why novels can have explicit sex scenes and be legit and films could not. So his short film of a relationship based solely on sex and a love for music is the result of that thought. If the definition of a porn film is to shoot actors performing graphic sex scenes for real, then 9 Songs qualifies. It certainly doesn't feel or look like your standard whoopdee-do XXX feature. It's as glossy and low-budget arty as Winterbottom's 24 Hour Party People or I Want You. But yeah, Matt and Lisa do everything to each other, and the actors are not "just acting" in some of the sex scenes. No matter how landmark the movie might be, there is not much story here (at least a book with hot sex often has a good story to it). Lisa is an American drifter in London who hooks up with Matt, a scientist who studies glaciers in Antarctica. They have sex and visit nine rock concerts including Franz Ferdinand and The Dandy Warhols. As advertised, you can't find these musical performances anywhere else, but we just see them from way back in the crowd. The film has an essence of how someone can find bliss in another person's body, and the emotional, magical weight that can hold over you. But that spell doesn't last. Since the sex is real, Winterbottom had to cast unknown actors, and they really don't make an impression, especially with the lack of story. --Doug Thomas

One damn awful film!.......2007-07-03

Please, dont anyone tell me this is some erotic Romeo and Juliet, dont anyone complain about this film being 'too explicit' this film is bad because.....well it is just plain awful.

Two ugly students, one an American with an accent so anoying that it makes you want to punch her the second an Englishman so boring you wish he would fall down one of those glaciers he is exploring meet up, go to so called 'indie' shows down the Brixton academy, have sex a few times, make a pathetic attempt to take drugs, argue a bit, then brake up. Just about sums up the film.

If this is what anyone realy considers a good plot consider putting a gun to your head and putting yourself out of your misery. So what there are '9 songs' in the film and that is some kind of clever link to the title, so what? If anyone thinks two half starved students engaging in sex is erotic well.....er each to their own I guess.

In this world the director used amature actors, I hear in Road to Guantanimo he did the same. I can only asume that in 9 songs he used the same format because these two planks cant possibly be professional actors. I even watched the extra footage which included an interview with the main actress who is even more anoying in real life than she is when she is making her poor attempt at acting.

Awful film, avoid at all costs. I shudder at the thought of this film as I write this review.

Love and Sex.......2007-06-05

I thought that this film did a great job in depicting modern life, especially that of a young urbanite.

Much has been said in the reviews about the reliance on sex to underline the story and to be honest doesn't sex underpin much of our lives?

I like the fact that the sex is less overt at the start of the film; though it is happening we get only glimpses and teasing rather than a full on show (a likeness to those first exploratory forays with a new lover?), however as the couple relax further into their relationship the sex becomes more selfish and frank. By the final act of the film, as the relationship begins to fail, the sex is at it's most explicit (shown in sun drenched hues, lazy and slow - often the indicator of romance in films), but in this case the realty of boredom and routine.

I enjoyed the film though, like most, I found some of the sex shocking. But it made me think and, it certainly felt like a real place and not some cinematic creation.

A not too good looking guy meets a really skinny girl at a rock concert. He takes her home and they do it. They see another band, and they do it some more. And so it goes on. And then the girl leaves and the guy resumes his job studying antarctic ice. End of story.
What we see: Medium-core porn that never becomes interesting, let alone exciting. A couple of rock bands that sound pretty much the same and look pretty much the same. Oh, and Michael Nyman playing the piano for an enjoyable minute or three.
What we learn: Rock may not be dead, but it's seriously ill. Porn may not be an artform, but it IS a craft and it DOES require skill and the power to convince - and boy, are these 'actors' and director powerless.

Somewhat Boring Family Movie.......2007-06-26

The Greatest Game Ever Played is a decent family movie that is extremely predictable and has a feel good ending. It had a good history of the U.S. Open and being a golf fan I learned some things about the sport's history.

I was bothered by the fact that I could constantly predict what would happen and was waiting for that warm fuzzy feeling that I received in a similar genre like Remember The Titans or A league of Their Own. It was not what I would consider a sports classic but I am sure that kids will enjoy watching the young man beat up on the older folks in the tournament. The story has the usual theme of one parent not believing in the child while the other is a great supporter until the end. The acting just wasn't believable.

I wouldn't highly recommend the movie but I guess if there is nothing else to watch then it is a decent choice

This is a great family movie about a little piece of ground breaking golf history. It is a true story about a young caddy who wins the U.S. Open in the early 1900's, and it is such and interesting story that it would appeal to both old and young viewers. My family watches this movie every time it's on so we bought it. We also bought the book that it is based on.

All films take a certain suspension of disbelief. Fight Club takes perhaps more than others, but if you're willing to let yourself get caught up in the anarchy, this film, based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, is a modern-day morality play warning of the decay of society. Edward Norton is the unnamed protagonist, a man going through life on cruise control, feeling nothing. To fill his hours, he begins attending support groups and 12-step meetings. True, he isn't actually afflicted with the problems, but he finds solace in the groups. This is destroyed, however, when he meets Marla (Helena Bonham Carter), also faking her way through groups. Spiraling back into insomnia, Norton finds his life is changed once again, by a chance encounter with Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), whose forthright style and no-nonsense way of taking what he wants appeal to our narrator. Tyler and the protagonist find a new way to feel release: they fight. They fight each other, and then as others are attracted to their ways, they fight the men who come to join their newly formed Fight Club. Marla begins a destructive affair with Tyler, and things fly out of control, as Fight Club grows into a nationwide fascist group that escapes the protagonist's control.

Fight Club, directed by David Fincher (Seven), is not for the faint of heart; the violence is no holds barred. But the film is captivating and beautifully shot, with some thought-provoking ideas. Pitt and Norton are an unbeatable duo, and the film has some surprisingly humorous moments. I dislike violent films, and I love this movie.......2007-06-25

Fight Club MUST be seen twice to be truly understood. Can't say more than that, it would ruin the fun.
This film was way ahead of its time in its devastatingly exact portrayal of the emptiness of its time. Give this puppy a few decades and it will be seen as perhaps the finest celluloid expression of millenial ennui/nihilism. The violence is entirely necessary to the experience, and this isn't the standard defense-industry-sponsored Hollywood Gun Porn; it's straight-up bare-knuckle brawling, and its visceral point hits home hard. In the anesthetized homogenized consumerist vacuum of a culture that we call home, it takes at least a few solid shots to the jaw to begin to wake up from our American Dream/Nightmare.
Fight Club was widely panned upon release, and no wonder. This is one of the most subversive major studio films of all time, intelligently deconstructing modern film and the entertainment/distraction industry in general. Fight Club's heroes blow up the headquarters of credit card companies (!) in a decidedly unapologetic way...not really the message our Feudal Lords wish us to ponder while being entertained. Why not buy a copy on your Mastercard just for kicks, but whatever you do don't burn it for everyone you know just because the message of this film is more important than making money for the system this flick slams at every turn.
So many hidden details, so much black humor (the Ikea lifestyle catalog scene is brilliant), three excellent lead performances, tremendous writing (Palahniuk must have been thrilled with the adaptation), a wild score, state of the art editing, sets, and direction, and so much more.
But, and this can not be overstated, you absolutely have to see it twice; the second viewing is a completely different animal, and will make you realize how thoroughly manipulated we are by modern culture, no matter how above and beyond it we think we may be.
For a culture constantly and adoringly staring up its own ahole, Fight Club is a satisfyingly violent enema.

I was like ok, everyone talked about fight club likes its the greatest movie of all time plus I am a huge Brad Pitt fan so let me just buy it without ever seeing it. Big mistake. The only interesting aspect of this movie is the ending revelation of the relationship between Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. Other than that, it was a waste of a lot of time. This movie was no short. But, than again, I am hard to entertain but I suggest that before you buy it, bit torrent it first!

This movie kicks...........2007-06-17

Fight Club....so fresh when it came out, and still so. Man, the action, the comedy, the drama.....and so so so so well put together. Ed Norton has a very controlled, boringly normal, compulsively square life. Then he joins a fight club, and Brad Pitt (smokin hot in this movie...it had to be said) steps into his life. I don't want to give away any twists or turns, but I will just say that while a little violent, the movie is amazing to watch. It's so well acted, and adventerous, and like nothing else you'll see.

Fight Club is a crude raunchy slugfest that knocks the wind out of you like an unsuspecting kick to the balls. Edward Norton a mealy mouthed insurance inspector runs into his antihero, a wise smart mouth punk, who knows what ails today's men. They have lost their animal instinct, the bloodlust, and their will to survive. The two start up a clandestine bare knuckle fight club. Surprisingly clubs spring up everywhere. The members begin to worship Pitt and Norton like gods. Things take a turn for the worse as the fight clubs turn its energy on society. Norton slowly but surely begins to realize that there is something really familiar about Pitt. This is really a great film if you're planning to be part of the new revolution; of course we all know the first rule.

I loved this movie. It give a much needed message while providing excellent, though dark, entertainment. I highly recommend it for anyone who needs to grow a pair!

Incomplete Shows.......2007-07-05

I too share the thoughts of these reviews. I am disappointed that these are not the complete episodes. Although the content of what is here is very nice sonically and visually, I feel very short-changed by it all. Why is it that all these other shows like Friends, I Love Lucy and (even) the Munsters can release full seasons in boxed sets but, when it comes to variety shows from this era, we get cut up versions? I have been waiting 37 years for this too! Guthy Renker did the same thing with the Dean Martin Variety Shows but sold them as cut up, 50 minute DVDs at $19.99 a piece! I hope that Mr. Jones himself reads these and, hopefully, will decide to release them in their entirety, in order, and by season. I don't care the cost. I'd buy them if they were $100. I just want them!

Yes, there are some "missing pieces" in this set (varying show lengths, deleted sequences), but considering that Jones and his [first season] show were true entertainment business phenomenons, and that only small excerpts have been available, at least domestically as far as I know, well, sit back and enjoy - though TJ's "Land of a Thousand Dances" could get Debby Boone fans to jump up and do the Mashed Potatoes.
Of course, with all the theatrics, beautifully captured and reprocessed nearly 40 years later (I have to mention the great art direction, the great orchestra and arrangements, and the expert editing, which today's tech.s should takea lesson from), it is the totally incredible voice box of Mr. Jones which covers the ticket cost. They didn't include the show where he sang, for the ages, Roy Orbison's "In Dreams", but that's okay.
Fans reading this know what I mean.
And recognizing those fans - they will go nuts when they witness terrific 1969 and 2007 interviews with Tom. His comments and observations are engaging and intelligent - this cat needs to teach a course!!
Downside: some truly humourless segments with the comedy teams, The Committee and The Ace Trucking Company. (Ace has one brilliant piece, however - they play behind-the-scenes personnel negotiating with Jones over modifying his...exuberance). Also, if you're a Glen Campbell fan/collector, forget it - his part is cut down to almost nothing for this package.
Back to upside: if you're a fan of Janis Joplin, Stevie Wonder, Joe Cocker, Aretha Franklin, or Little Richard...check this out. But TJ fans forgive me: his enthusiasm does get in the way of said artists: For example, Little Richard was really at the top of his game on his comeback trail, rockin' and soulin' at a level at which even his most dedicated fans will be surprised, but there are spots on the shared medley of LR classics where the host should have stepped back and let this originator do his own thing - though musically it works and makes for high excitement, his [rock and roll] singing approach obviously is based heavily on Mr. Penniman's, and to the less initiated, casual listener, it actually sounds as if Tom is parroting his idol more than singing with him. Call and response was not appropriate - he should have provided high harmony for the most part.
I heard, or *sensed* some distortion off Jones' mike but, considering his unusually strong voice, maybe no techonology could contain him then. (Or today).
Tom mentions Jerry Lee Lewis in his interview. Do I have to say it? Time-Life, uh, can you please consider Volume Two, with the above-mentioned Ferriday Fireball? Even better....release the whole series. (I'll brown bag it to work for a month, even though I'm retired).

Better than nothing, but leaves alot to be desired.......2007-07-02

This DVD set is typical fare put out by Paul Brownstein productions, classic variety shows hacked up within an inch of their life. The excuse will be "Too expensive to get all the music rights" but the real reason is cheapness exhibited by this company on all it's releases (Time-Life is simply the distributor of the set, not the producer). R2 entertainment, who is responsible for the Tony Orlando And Dawn and Captain And Tennille sets would have been a much better choice to produce this set. Episodes are shockingly incomplete, totally missing all performances by the Hollies, Joey Heatherton, Claudine Longet, and several others. Picture quality is passable to good, but not "Pristine" as one reviewer put it. This show was shot on videotape, so do not expect the stunning video clarity that exists on all of the live-action shows from the ITC library that were shot on film, such as The Persuaders, UFO, and Space:1999. Audio dropouts exist here and there, most notably in the final 10 seconds of "Help Yourself". Other video anomalies, especially in the opening 5 minutes of the Glen Campbell/Janis Joplin eppy nearly marr the viewing experience. The episode with The Who in black and white is a dissapointment, especially when state of the art colorization is available (Al'a season 1 I Dream Of Jeannie, colorization is light years ahead of what it used to be) or they could have simply chosen another episode. This set seems quite heavy on musical guests from the soul genre and late 60's "Drug culture" rock such as Janis Joplin, The Who, Joe Cocker. Replacing the Black and White Who episode with perhaps a Dusty Springfield or Mama Cass episode might have broadened this sets' appeal and made it all in color. Some real highlights are Mary Hopkins' "Those Were The Days", and the Moody Blues "Ride My See-Saw", where for some unknown reason, only shows Justin Hayward's and John Lodge's faces for about 10 seconds, but the camera seems to spend half of the song focused in on the crotch of Graeme Edge and Justin Hayward's hands. The Janis Joplin performance is quite electric and stunning to watch, and great performances from Aretha Franklin as well. Lots of gems..... but unfortuantely marred by poor execution, so take what's good about it and hope they give us more next time, that's all we can do.

Major Disappointment, all shows are incomplete.......2007-06-29

I wanted to report to the community that I am EXTREMELY disappointed in the This Is Tom Jones DVD set. None of the shows are complete, most are less than half their original running time, one is about 38 minutes, most are about 25 minutes on average, and Tom gives a 1-2 minute introduction to each of the shows as well. The bonus features aren't very exciting either, but I didn't really care about that. It's really disgraceful, I am going to write to Time Life too. I plan to keep the set, mainly because the music clips that are on there are upgrades in quality from what I already had acquired in the collectors circles, and a few I didn't have at all, but I am just so terribly disappointed. If they put out a set like this, it should at least have a warning that the shows are incomplete. I remember fondly watching this show and the Johnny Cash Show with my father when they were first on the air, so they bring back a lot of memories for me, but this set is just a mess, here are the actual running times.

Great time capsule from the end of the swingin 60's!.......2007-06-27

This is great fun....and features some brilliant vocals by Tom Jones...who like Elvis was a sex symbol who actually had some powerful pipes! The guest stars are a who's who of the era...well, like the Who, Joe Cocker, Aretha Franklin , Janis Joplin, Little Richard and Stevie Wonder...wow! The comic support by a young Richard Pryor, Pat Paulson, Peter Sellers are wonderful. The quality of the video is very good and Mr Jones spiced the production up with fun intros and a half hour interview from this year. All great stuff...and not lip synched! very edgy versions of some of these tunes and a bit raw and unpolished at times.

Oh..and to the "EXPERT" who reviewed this title months before it came out..
and complained about the 8 times Tom Jones sings "Its Not Unusual"? 6 of em are the same SERIES OPENING...another is a duet with Stevie Wonder ..with Stevie taking the lead and likewise with Aretha Franklin. Tom only performs it ONCE in this set during his "Concert" segment. Seems the "Expert" might benefit from viewing the DVDs he or she reviews.

The John Hughes universe.......2007-06-13

Many who were teenagers in the 80s see Breakfast Club the way some saw Rebel Without A Cause in the 50s. Both movies are about teenage angst. Most of my "grasshopper" (Kung Fu) moments in my life came from the 80s. That said, this film has it's merits but also it's flaws. One actor makes this movie great. Judd Nelson. He steals the show in every scene. Even when he isn't talking, you are watching his reactions. His performance is perfect. I believe him as a troubled teen even though he's 24(!) at the time of the filming. Another great performance, often overlooked, is Paul Gleason as Vernon. He's dislikeable and believable. Makes you wonder if Vernon was like Brian and who grew up to be authority to get 'even' with guys like Bender and Andy. Just an idea. Gleason's performance is a solid one.
The flaws include the slang (no one then or now calls rich kids "richies". They are either preppies or yuppies.), the inane stories (Andy's locker room story and Brian's flare gun story fail to hold my attention), the fake performances (Brain's forced tears when he says to Clare "&*%$ you") and the continuity shots (Clare and Allison's many hair days during 8 hour detention). The script could've used some fine tuning. Had it been written better, the five students would know each other more even if they aren't friends. The character stereotypes (brain, princess, criminal, jock, and basket case) would mesh with each other. In order words, the five would have more in common with each other instead of coming from five different cliques. Lastly, the term "Breakfast Club" never appeared anywhere until John Hughes coined the phrase. He uses the phrase as if everyone who is in detention is a Breakfast Club member. I would title it something else. A good script doctor would be helpful.
In my opinion, the movie doesn't hold up well today, but it is still entertaining, given it's context. This is the John Hughes universe we are talking about, not the real world.

Intense........2007-04-15

This is an aboslutely amazing movie. Being a teenager, you can really relate to this movie. But adults no doubt can too from their highschool days. You will laugh and maybe cry. The story behind it is truly beautiful. 5 stereotype highschool students end up in detention together and discover after pouring their hearts our to each other, that they have much more in common then they thought. "They only met once, but it changed their lives forever."

When I first heard of bfc I don't think I even wanted to see it. Then I saw Ferris Bueller's Day Off and one thing led to another. Anyways the point is, this movie is actually fun to watch. All five of these characters are surprisingly believable and not to mention funny. Though this movie is usually considered a "chick flick" I have no problem watching it. Otherwise, besides certian immoral content in the film, that i try to skip anyways, this movie is great! I'm amused by the scenario the characters are put in. I can actually relate to Brian(the nerd). Its kind of scary though, cause he shares my name. As for the rest characters, they just made me laugh to no end. The basket case I found particularly cool. I won't comment on the emotional aspect of the film, but I will say I felt it and just leave it at that. Oh and as a 17 year old, trust me, its great to see teens actually act like teens!!!!! Now a days it seems most teen flicks are bassically movies about sex crazed monsters(no ones REALLY like that). AND IT'S NOT FUNNY, its just kind of grose. So in conclusion, this movie was actually to my surprise good.The BEST PART is when there all dancing to We Are Not Alone by Karla Devito. I never thought in a million years I would like a movie where some jock started crying about how he tapped some kid's bun cheeks together.

P.S. No seriously though, what was up with that bun cheek thing?

Were you ever in detention? .......2007-03-14

I was a good little girl at school; I was never in detention. So I can't identify with this movie at all. Especially an American detention. They were there the whole of Saturday! And the antics they get up to!

I got recommended this by someone I work with, who was playing the Simple Minds on her mp3 player, and I confessed I had no idea who they were. She said they did a song on the soundtrack to this, I said I'd never seen it, and she told me to get it. So I did.

None of the actors have really done much since this film, apart from Emilio Estevez, who is still floating around out there. There's been lots of fuss about a sequel, but I doubt that will ever happen. It doesn't really warrant a sequel. Which means they will make a sequel or a remake. And that will ruin it.

Basically you have five teenage stereotypes - the rebel (Bender), the princess (Claire), the jock (Andy), the brain (Brian), and the outcast (Allison) - who would never normally associate with each other, but they get stuck together in detention. It can be a bit overacted, and a bit melodramatic at times, but yes, it works. My favourite character was the outcast, Allison, played by Ally Sheedy. She actually reminded me quite a lot of myself during high school (and at the beginning of college), hiding behind her fringe, coat, whatever comes to hand, and not speaking to anyone. Her haircut was practically the same as mine too! And the dandruff/snow on the drawing scene was absolutely classic! The reasons they all get into detention are a bit strange as well: Bender: pulls a false fire alarm; Brian: flare gun goes off in his locker; Andy: tapes a guy's butt cheeks together in the locker room; Claire: ditches class to go shopping; and Allison: didn't do anything, she didn't have anything better to do on a Saturday. (That last bit made the character for me.)

The rest of the movie is pretty much forgettable, apart from the dancing sequence, which is so funny.

If you recognise yourself in these characters, or know someone else who was that particular stereotype, then I would recommend getting it. It's easy enough to while away an hour or so watching. It will also show what you're really like depending which character is your favourite. What does your favourite reveal about you? It's a shame I'm not old enough to remember the 80s (ha!) I was born halfway through, and wasn't old enough to know about the whole Rat Pack phenomenon. But if you can pick this up for cheap, I certainly would recommend it.

Awesome Movie.......2007-03-01

I'm 36 and this is STILL one of my favorite movies of all times. I cannot wait to share it with my children.

One of the best stories ever............2007-06-28

This is a great story to share with you daughter. I have 2 daughters and will show them this DVD. I watched it with my mother and we cried. The women in this story are so real and every woman can relate to at least one of them. A must see--DVD, a must read book.

Chick flick.......2007-05-29

Definite chick flick. One of the first really long films I fell in love with. Get's a good cry from me. I definitely feel like I can connect to the characters in this film. Many of them are really nicely developed. You can really feel the struggles of many of the daughters and the expectations the family has for them.

Great representation of the book.......2007-05-25

"The Joy Luck Club" is one of my favorite books, so I wasn't sure how I would like the movie. But, I was surprised to find that it is a great depiction of the book - very accurate, minus a few minor things here and there. I highly recommend this movie, whether you have read the book or not.

beautiful and heartwrenching................2007-05-16

I saw this film, based on the novel of the same name (written by Amy Tan), several years after it was released in the movie theaters. It was a suggested film for a Sociology in the Media course, and I can definitely see why it was reccomended. It's a tearjerker and was beautifully adapted for the screen. Director Wayne Wang brings the harrowing stories of eight Chinese and Chinese-American women, spanning two generations, together as an epic tale of the turbulence and pain of immigration and assimilation. The cast includes the wonderful Ming Na (as one of the daughters).

This story really takes an honest look at the struggle and sacrifice that immigrants must make, in the face of all odds, to survive and adapt to a new culture, language and set of social expectations. All the while, in the case of these strong women, they hold strong to their culture through weekly games of mah jong, where they gather together to gossip, give advice and commiserate. This is a great film, and has been called a "chic flick," but I really don't believe that that stereotypical term is fitting of THE JOY LUCK CLUB at all. It is truly a film for all people. All people age seventeen and over, that is. There is a reason that this was rated R. There is intensely graphic and disturbing imagery here, as well as thematic elements that are too much for small children or young teens.

A wonderfully insightful look at Mother-Daughter relationships.......2007-04-05

This film involves you from the start. It is the story of four Chinese families that centers on the Mothers and Daughters in each unit. It reminds you that you come from somewhere and the influences of culture and family and situations makes each of us who we are. It also speaks volumes to the fact that Mothers are human beings, and definitely worth getting to know better.

The acting is very good. Since Amy Tan was involved in creating the screenplay, much of the dialogue and narrative come straight from her book - which is wonderful! Where are the people that talk like that? This is a colorful tale that I highly recommend.
