Blessed by casual charm and sophisticated wit, Kissing Jessica Stein does for same-sex romance what Annie Hall did for straight neurotics. The influence of Woody Allen is keenly felt on this resourceful New York comedy (expanded from an off-Broadway play), especially when cowriter and costar Jennifer Westfeldt channels Diane Keaton's "la-di-da" nervousness as Jessica Stein, a romantically frustrated heterosexual copyeditor who impulsively answers a personal ad from a bisexual woman. Helen (cowriter Heather Juergensen) is as relaxed about lesbian love as Jessica is anxious, but they click as lovers, and so does the movie's delightful exploration of their budding relationship, which is further complicated by Jessica's yenta-like mother (Tovah Feldshuh) and a former boyfriend (Scott Cohen) who's now Jessica's boss. While acknowledging the serious repercussions of Jessica's bisexual flirtation, Kissing Jessica Stein takes its characters on a smart, compassionate journey of self-discovery that's as truthfully observant as it is gently entertaining. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Sex and the single girl gets a fresh new spin in this "very funny movie"! (Joel Siegel, Good morning America) Fed up with her fruitless search for "Mr. Right" and tired of blind dates from hell, attractive journalist Jessica Stein whimsically responds to a classified ad - from Helen! Making and breaking new rules of dating as they go, the two women muddle through an earnest but hilarious courtship that blurs the lines between friendship and romantic love in this "smashing romantic comedy" (Rolling Stone)
Customer Reviews:
The best romantic comedy of '02.......2007-05-26
"Kissing Jessica Stein" features no major (or even minor) stars, a low budget (about $1 million), and a taboo topic. But the film, which never would have been made without the perseverance of screenwriters and co-stars Heather Juergensen and Jennifer Westfeldt, is a refreshing mix of quirky indie spirit and classic romantic-comedy sentiment.
Westfeldt plays Jessica Stein, a neurotic New York copy editor who's fed up with the dating game. If having her overprotective Jewish mother set her up with undesirable suitors wasn't bad enough, she also has to deal with one bad date after another, not to mention working for her ex-boyfriend (a solid Scott Cohen).
The movie gets off to a somewhat rocky star, with the humor coming across as forced and the scenarios boasting a been-there-seen-that feel.
Fortunately, when Jessica decides to answer a personal ad in the "Women Seeking Women" section, the film takes off. The first date between Jessica and Helen Cooper (Heather Juergensen), a downtown hipster with bisexual preferences, is beautifully written and acted. Jessica's gradual transition from feeling awkward to being intrigued is completely believable.
From then on out, with the exception of a few minor lapses, "Kissing Jessica Stein" is a fresh and funny romantic comedy that explores the ups and downs of the blossoming relationship between Jessica and Helen. Juergensen and Westfeldt, aided by a solid supporting cast, deliver plenty of laughs. Case in point: a highly amusing scene in which Jessica and Helen prod two unknowing, would-be male suitors into telling them why two women together are so sexy.
But "Kissing Jessica Stein" isn't all light laughs. With the help of director Charles Herman-Wurmfeld, Juergensen and Westfeldt dig into some highly effective dramatic scenes that round out the characters and give the film a little more depth. A nicely shot scene in which the two quarrel about Jessica's unwillingness to tell her family and friends about their lesbian relationship packs a powerful emotional wallop. Ditto a heartfelt exchange between Jessica and her mom late in the film.
While director Herman-Wurmfeld does a fine job of making this low-budget pic look like its budget is much larger, he wisely leaves the focus on the actors and the film's excellent script. Westfeldt, who brings to mind an indie Lisa Kudrow, digs beyond sitcom superficiality to find the longing beneath Jessica's perfectionist leanings. The charismatic Juergensen, tough yet vulnerable, is superb as Helen -- keep your eye on this promising actress.
It's a kick to see two talented young women sticking it to the male-dominated movie scene and creating a top-notch film through their perseverance and talent. Anyone who enjoys a good romantic comedy and understands how rarely they come along won't want to miss "Kissing Jessica Stein."
Great movie!.......2007-05-18
It's about a very conservative/neurotic woman who's fed up with men, and on a whim decides to try dating a woman instead. An all around good movie. It made me laugh, almost made me cry... I think they could've done a little more with the ending, but I thought it was still pretty good. It's even a good movie to have your boyfriend/husband watch with you(not super-girly). I would recommend this movie to just about anyone.
love it.......2007-03-22
i think i am being a bit bias, but i love this movie. the seller sent it out relatively quickly as well.
A Great Love Story.......2007-01-14
A lesbian love story, Kissing Jessica Stein is cute and sweet. Jessica is fed up of crappy dates with crappy men, so she takes a chance on a personal ad and begins dating Helen. Jessica finds everything she ever wanted in Helen, but keeps the relationship a secret because Jessica's not a lesbian. The relationship eventually deteriorates, but the experience gives Jessica a new outlook on life.
A heart-felt, somewhat disturbing, romantic comedy...with lesbians........2006-08-29
The movie "Kissing Jessica Stein" is at once a silly comedy, a disturbing look at sexual frustration, misanthropic relations with fellow humans, and promiscuity.
The character of Jessica Stein is a woman too smart, and too neurotic, for her own good. She feels that she knows herself so well that she has no reason to try anything outside the norm of her everyday routine. She doesn't really understand how to respond to men who are interested in her and the beginning of the movie paints the majority of men as sniveling, unintelligent, selfish creatures. I'm sure a large number of men have these undesirable qualities, but I assure you, we are not all this way. After going through these stereotypical, mildly amusing, but altogether badly written characters that are supposed to represent the dating scene of the time our love lost heroine is embattling her way through loneliness.
Enter Helen. A woman who is lost in a triangle of sexual intensity, bordering on promiscuous. A woman who also knows enough about life to understand that selfishness is something that is a natural part of the world, and therefore acceptable. In a conversation within the movie, and I won't spoil anything too much, Jessica makes a comment about a group of people behaving selfishly because of their pursuit of spiritual enlightenment and happiness and Helen responds with, "They're just doing their thing. Some people smoke pot, some people chant."
The most interesting aspect to the movie is that fact that it was written by Jennifer Westfeldt and Heather Juergensen, or Jessica Stein and Helen Cooper, respectively. The acting in the movie is, for the most part, wonderful. Jennifer Westfeldt's ditzy, air-headed-yet-intelligent personae in the film will get on your nerves every ten or fifteen minutes, but she presents the character in a believable manner. The one-face-for-every-emotion approach by Heather Juergensen would seem to be something horrible, but, for some strange reason, works. She uses the same face throughout the movie, but it actually conveys every emotion that she is trying to portray. Throw in totally believable performances by Scott Cohen as Josh Myers, the jerk ex-boyfriend of Jessica, Jackie Hoffman, as Jessica's loud best-friend and all the other actors/actresses in the film and you have quite a nice little comedy. I give it a 4.

Peter Gabriel: Growing Up Live presents the complete 2003 Milan concert from Peter Gabriel's tour based around the album Up, featuring 17 tracks across 134 minutes. Literally central to a memorable show is a revolving stage that sees Gabriel going for a cycle ride in an exuberant "Solsbury Hill," performing "Growing Up" inside a Zorb ball, and delivering a gravity-defying sky walk in "Downside Up" with daughter Melanie. Accompanied by regular sidemen David Rhodes (guitar) and Tony Levin (bass), Gabriel is joined by the legendary Blind Boys of Alabama for the spine-tingling "Sky Blue," throughout mixing recent tracks like the abrasive "Darkness" and "The Barry Williams Show" with established crowd pleasers such as "Red Rain," "In Your Eyes," and "Sledgehammer."
Gabriel may be less wired than before, but he commands the arena with effortless charm and charismatic presence, his voice retaining all its paradoxically fragile power. Presented in an understated blue light and shot in an unobtrusive, gimmick-free style, the concert begins and ends in virtual darkness with Gabriel alone at a keyboard; from the opening "Here Comes the Flood" to the final "Father, Son," Growing Up is rock theater of rare intimacy, emotion, and intelligence.
The DVD is presented with a flawless 16:9 anamorphically enhanced picture and three soundtracks: rich and clear stereo, excellent Dolby Digital 5.1 and even more precise and detailed DTS. The Story of Growing Up is polished nine-minute documentary in which Gabriel talks about his ideas for the tour and the presentation of some of the songs. Tony Levin's View (five minutes) sets the song "More Than This" to photos taken by the bass player. --Gary S. Dalkin

Great condition.......2007-05-14
I could have picked it off the shelf myself, but didn't have to
Fantastic.......2007-04-12
After watching Still Growing Up and Secret World I think this is the best of the three in terms of the song list, production and performance. It is simply a joy to hear and watch. I've never seen PG live in person, but this DVD is a good way to experience it, especially if it's on a good surround system & screen.
I enjoyed it........2007-02-20
This disc is not a "reference" quality disc by any means... the images are some what soft and although the music tracks are clean, perhaps it leans a tad too sanitized during post-production... However if you can overlook the technical aspirations of the dvd, you have yourself a very immersive show with great artistry and interesting visuals. Peter Gabriel is quite a thoughtful and engaging artist and it is readily apparent in this concert. I sat through the disc with the wife and we enjoyed it very much. If you like Peter, it is a disc worth acquiring for the collection.
waste of time.......2007-01-24
Obviously the other reviewers have never been to a concert before. I have always been a fan of Peter Gabriel and i like his music but here he is in my opinion a pale glimmer of his former self. There was no energy and everybody looked like they were just going through the motions. Maybe all who wrote a review were captivated by the strange looking bald bass player
but i really am mystified as to the high marks on this one. This one just did'nt have the energy i've become acustomed to in a concert but was more like a tv studio production.
Incorrect Region Code.......2007-01-10
I'm disappointed as this DVD is of Region Code 1, whereas my player (as logical in Finland!) can play only Region Code 2 DVDs. Region Codes are not mentioned at your web-site and when making the order/purchase.
Your return policy is also unclear. I see it unfair that I should pay for a postal charge, or any other compensation, when you send a product that I can not use with my DVD player.

An old clasic! .......2007-06-11
Been a Long time since I've seen this one, glad to have a copy!
An American Zatoichi - the blind swordsman.......2006-11-20
This film takes the character from the original japanese television series "Zatoichi - the Blind Swordsman" starring Shintaro Katsu complete with a hidden cane sword. Rutger Hauer takes the role and puts the American twist in it. Shô Kosugi, a japanese actor who plays ninja in a lot of Japanese movie and television flicks, stars as an assassin who fights Hauer's character. They should make a sequel or a remake this time with a more serious plot...
Great movie.......2006-09-14
A blind swordman, The fight scenes where great! This man has a sixth sence. The story was also great. A must see!
A different kind of hero.......2006-07-16
If you liked the old "Kung Fu" TV series, you'll like this movie. Soft spoken and easy going Nick Parker (Rutger Hauer), like Kwai Chang Caine, roams the civilized world in search of ... peace and tranquility? And, like our Kung Fu hero of the Old West, he is ready to come out of his mild mannered shell to defend the weak and fight evil. How he acquired such fighting skills is even stranger than how Kwai Chang Caine became a Kung Fu Master. Especially considering he is blind.
So what sets this movie apart from other action movies? Rutger Hauer.
Rutger Hauer is a really good actor when he applies himself, which he does not always do in his films. But he is at his pinnacle here, making you believe that what you see is what you get. He will make you believe a blind man can develop a six sense (with a little help from a mysterious tribe somewhere.)
I took a half star off because of a lame attempt at humor. I like a laugh as much as the next guy and there was some decent humor interlaced in the story but, a blind man driving around in heavy traffic, going up one-way streets, is something I expect to see in a three stooge's movie. It was out of place here. Still, this is a good action movie. 3 1/2 stars.
Furious Fighting.......2006-05-08
This is a superb film starring Rutger Hauer. It is a well made movie with good acting and a lot of action as well as humour.
Rutger plays as a Vietnam War veteran who lost his sight following an explosion. He was captured by the Japanese and his captors taught him Samurai fighting. He becomes an excellent swordsman. The film then moves forward several years later when Rutger returns to America and goes to visit his old war pal, only to find that he had been kidnapped by some villains and forced to make drugs. He goes to rescue his friend. From this develops an exciting and action packed adventure where he displays his exceptional and creative fighting skills.
If you are a fan of the Dutch actor, Rutger and you love adventure and excitement, then you will not go wrong with this movie.

About the film
Stunning 70's cult siren Meiko Kaji, star of the LADY SNOWBLOOD, FEMALE CONVICT SCORPION and STRAY CAT ROCK films, blasts off in her first headlining role! A novice yakuza boss in early 20th century Japan, she must defend her clan against a vengeful blind swordswoman (Hoki Tokuda), her bizarre hunchback servant (Tatsumi Hijikata), as well as villain Toru Abe's gang of bloodthirsty killers.
Director Teruo Ishii (FEMALE YAKUZA TALE, HORROR OF MALFORMED MEN) delivers a bizarre hybrid of Japanese horror and yakuza genres featuring a nomadic terror carnival, girls skinned alive for their tattooed epidermis, and a succession of brutal swordfights. Actress Kaji offers prime evidence of why she became the top female action star of 1970's Japan. One of the key cult films from Nikkatsu, the studio that also released the unforgettable, offbeat hit TOKYO DRIFTER.
Customer Reviews:
A True Meaning Of Blind Vengeance.......2007-06-05
Blind Woman's Curse ia a film directed by the man who directed Sex and Fury and Female Yakuza Tale and stars Meiko Kaji(from the Lady Snowblood flims)as a ruthless Yakuza ladyboss who, while in a swordfight with rival yakuza clans, mistakenly blinds a Japanese noblewoman with her katana blade, filled with anger and hatred, the blind woman, along with her Quasimodo-type henchman, begins her search for the woman who maimed her. The film has all the unique formulas of a classic 1970's Pinky violence film, cold-blooded swordswomen, Japanese mafia bosses, and pure horror that would make Roger Corman be proud. Blind Woman's Curse has proven that not all Japanese women are docile and friendly. :)
Blind Woman's Curse.......2007-05-24
Sure I love serious samurai films like Seven Samurai, but sometimes its cool to sit back and watch an over the top yakuza horror gorefest like Blind Woman's Curse. It doesn't pander to any certain crowd with pretensions, features over the top action, blood, female yakuza, a freakshow with loads of naked women screaming children and an old guy who seems to be cooking human remains all on the outside of the show and the clencher in a retarded hunchback that likes to skin people just for their dragon tatoos. Yeah thats prime entertainment to me.
Curse is the story of Tachibana Akemi, the young heir apparent of the Tachibana gang slowly coming to fight the Aozora family. The film begins with a showdown between Akemi and a certain group, in which she accidentally blinds the titular blind woman. From then on She feels cursed, a trait she fears is spreading to all of those around her. She comes back to her family unwilling to fight the Aozora group who attack the Tachibana group with a little help from a turncoat spy Tatsu who wants to bed Chie Chan the daughter of a former Tachibana member who now runs a restaraunt. Into this conflict comes the blind woman a performer who's overcome her disability seeking revenge for her disfigurement at Akemi's hands. Everythings convoluted to the Nth degree in this story and I'm sure I'm leaving something out somewhere in that plot description.
Just everything in here entertains from the decent to the over the top acting. After this film and the two Lady Snowblood films Meiko Kaji shows why she was one of the top female actresses of the seventies having a hard beauty that adds to her performance. And the over the top art direction and photography just adds to the sweetness on the icing of this cake. This film isn't great art, but that doesn't keep it from being something more, great entertainment something not even the most serious of films today can achieve.

Bruce Willis's first starring vehicle was this 1987 comedy by Blake Edwards (Victor/Victoria), in which the actor plays a yuppie set up on a blind date with a beautiful blonde (Kim Basinger). Everything goes swimmingly until Willis does what he was warned not to do: give the lady alcohol, which causes her to get entirely out of control. The one-note joke basically turns the film into a succession of set pieces in which Willis has to keep up with Basinger, bail her out of trouble, or get out of the way of her hotheaded former boyfriend (John Larroquette). Willis is fine, Basinger is impressively unhinged, Larroquette is hilarious, and Phil Hartman has a nice role as the friend who set up Willis's evening from hell. The slapstick shtick is classic Edwards, but the film is not Edwards at his most inspired. Consider Blind Date the work of a good filmmaker in a holding pattern. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
WHOA!.......2007-06-25
The sight of Bruce Willis slipping on golf balls brings a tear to my eye every time. I love Blake Edwards, always have, always will. He has made some bombs (any Pink Panther movie after Peter Sellers died, for example), yet Blind Date, as far as it is from being as funny as Sellers' Pink Panther movies, The Party (also with Sellers), Breakfast at Tiffany's, and so on, is an entertaining movie and has many clever moments.
The plot, anyway, concerns workaholic Walter (Bruce Willis, pre-DIE HARD and very funny), who is bucking for a promotion and soon finds he needs a date for a dinner with his boss and a Japanese client they are representing. His brother-in-law (the always reliable late Phil Hartman)recommends Nadia (Kim Basinger), who is a sweet girl, until you get her drunk. Pish posh, says Walter, and down the hatch goes the champagne. Soon she is wrecking the dinner party, getting Walter fired, getting his car destroyed, and ultimately getting him arrested, mostly thanks to her psychotic ex-bpyfriend David (John Larroquette, basically reprising his STRIPES character and doing a fine job at it). From there Walter has to crash David and Nadia's wedding (long story), but not before some sneaking around David's parents' mansion (which Edwards can direct like no one else).
So slapstick? Check. Romance? Check. Bad '80s music? ...Sigh, check. Yeah, you'd think combining the two things he does best (pratfalls and romance) would make a masterpiece, but his fine eye for what's funny and Dale Launer's (also behind My Cousin Vinny, Ruthless People, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, three admittedly better movies) witty script make a funny movie to watch on a boring night. Just watch out for that music. Poor Henry Mancini can't even write good '80s music.
Moronic.......2006-07-21
The so-called humor in this embarrassingly awful and unfunny movie is so uncreative and moronic. It is apparently for a demographic of viewers with an extremely childish sense of humor. A three year old will laugh at anything. Every turn of the plot is stupid. This is in the running for the worst movie ever made. I don't trust the taste of anyone who actually was impressed by this horse manure. I hope that Bruce Willis would have the class to turn down a role like this if he was offered it now. I think he is a very good actor. It's a shame what kind of garbage he had to be in, to get his career going.
Ever feel that you are in a Dave Barry skit?.......2006-05-29
If you are familiar with Dave Barry "DAVE BARRY'S COMPLETE GUIDE TO GUYS", you will recognize his formula of starting out with some innocuous statement about a neutral subject and it builds up slowly and logically to make you thing that something totally ridicules is plausible.
Walter Davis (Bruce Willis) is required to bring a date to a company function. A relative (Phil Hartman) know for finding weird blind dates seems to have located the perfect date Nadia Gates (Kim Basinger;) the only caveat is that she is unstable when liberated. Walter was warned.
Naturally the warning must be an exaggeration as we all get a little tipsy. Nope it was right on the money. Nadia who also gives warning goes from polite to helpful to very helpful. To top this off she is being doggedly followed by a psychotic cop ex-boyfriend (John Larroquette.) This is just for starters.
"Do you recognize me? I used to be a respectable citizen. I had a good job and a promising future. I made only one mistake - I went on a blind date. ...Anyone got $10,000 for bail?"
A COMEDY WORTH SEEING!!!.......2006-04-20
It has been awhile since I have seen this movie. The first time was in the theatre when it came out with my family. Since then I had seen it at Blockbuster and picked it up for the heck of it. I forgot how funny this movie was. And the most overlooked performance has to be by the late Phil Hartman (Ted Davis). What a comic he was! He had joined SNL in 1986 so I'm guessing this was one of his first movies after joining the show. Bruce Willis (Walter Davis) & Kim Basinger (Nadia Gates) do an equally good job of acting like a couple who are smitten with each other (when they aren't drunk, that is.) Adding to the laughs is Stephanie Faracy (The Great Outdoors) as Susie Davis, Walter's sister-in-law, John Larroquette (of Night Court) as Nadia's ex-crazed boyfriend David Bedford, and William Daniels (Boy Meets World) as Judge Harold Bedford, David's father. This is a great movie for a Friday night. It was just as much fun pointing out the cameos from Billy Vera & Stanley Jordan. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did!
Funny Bruce.......2005-09-20
This is a great Bruce Willis comedy from the 80s. Far from the big action movies that Bruce is so well known for, movie will entertain everyone with its comedy and hijinks. My only complaint about this movie is there are a few, just a few, parts in this movie that seem a little slow, otherwise prepare to laugh out loud.

Accidentally blinded, John Ratcliff (Joseph Bottoms) has a "seeing eye" computer chip implanted directly into his brain, only to witness a murder and see the serial killer--but only in bold outline. The cat and mouse game begins in this riveting shocker featuring Kirstie Alley, "Star Trek: The Next Generation's" Marina Sirtis, and "2001: A Space Odyseey's" Keir Dullea. Now available for the first time in Nico Mastorakis' director's cut, "Blind Date" has been newly remastered and features extensive bonus material including never before seen footage of Kirstie Alley's daring love scene.
Customer Reviews:
Typical '80's Cheesefest.......2005-09-14
Just finished watching this after having it for about a year or so and finally getting around to it. Well, I guess I could've waited even longer because it wasn't very good or really worth seeing at any particular time. I've seen worse so I was still able to sit through it and besides, it's loaded with typical nondescript 1980's music by unknown acts (at least here in the States, probably), bad acting, bad photography, bad special effects, bad writing and bad directing, so watching it was a kind of excercise in sadomasochistic patience. If you're a connoisseur of bad films then this one will certainly delight you.
The Adventures of Sonar Boy and the case of the Killer Cabbie..........2005-08-28
So what is the main appeal of the film Blind Date (1984)? It's not the acting, and definitely not the story...well, if you're a Star Trek fan, how about the chance to see a topless Kirstie Alley (Lt. Saavik in Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan) and Marina Sirtis (councilor Deanna Troi from the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" television series)? Four good reasons right there, if you ask me...produced, written, and directed by Nico Mastorakis (The Zero Boys, Ninja Academy), who's sort of a Greek Roger Corman, the film stars Joseph `I'm not Timothy' Bottoms (The Black Hole) and the aforementioned Kirstie Alley, albeit a much slimmer one than the Pier One/Jenny Craig pimpette we're familiar with today. Also appearing is James `Greg Marmalard' Daughton (Animal House, Spies Like Us), Lana Clarkson (Deathstalker, Barbarian Queen), a name certainly known to any lover of bad movies, and Keir Dullea, probably best known for his role as Dr. Dave Bowman in Stanley Kubrick's seminal science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)...you've come a long way, boyo...
The film starts out at a carnival, with a woman leaving via a cab. On arriving home, she strips (exposing some large nips), showers, and then hears a noise that she proceeds to investigate. Turns out, not only hasn't the cabbie left, but he's entered her home, perhaps for a better tip...nope, he's there to operate (literally) as he chloroforms the woman and pulls out a scalpel...we then switch to meet our main character named Jonathon Ratcliff (Bottoms), an American in Greece, working as an executive for an ad agency. During a swimsuit photo session in a mall (yes, that's a young Valeria Golino in a bikini), he thinks he recognizes one of the models as a girl from his past, but can't be sure...back at the office we meet Jonathan's braless girlfriend/co-worker Claire Simpson (Alley), to which they meet up again later at her place for Jonathon's birthday celebration which involves a little boom shakalaka with Claire (hello boobage), and I'm reminded of a saying involving not dipping your pen in the company ink...anyway, Jonathan becomes somewhat obsessive over the model he thinks is a woman from his past (turns out she suffered an incident, while in his company, one which he couldn't prevent) and begins stalking her, but ends up hurting himself badly after a chance meeting with a low hanging tree branch. Subsequently he's now blind, but learns of an experimental procedure involving sonar and a visual synthesizer that might allow him to see again. He signs up, and the operation's a success to some degree...he can see, by using implants in conjunction with a device that looks a hell of a lot like a Walkman, which creates only outlines sans the details, but hey, Atari-Vision is better than nothing, right? By chance, Jonathan witnesses one of the serial killer's murders, and now is being stalked by said killer, who picks up on the woman Jonathan thought he knew from so long ago...Jonathan realizes this, and now the hunted becomes the hunter as he must do what he was unable to do so long ago in protecting the woman he thinks is the girl he once loved...
I mentioned that Nico Mastorakis (who, by the way, sure likes breasts, as much as he shows them) reminds me of the Greek version of Roger Corman because they both make cheap films, often using actors who to gain popularity later in their careers, or else actors who were more popular, and have since fallen into the cinematic equivalent of purgatory, relegated to appearing in craptacular films like this...surprisingly, I thought the film had some really decent production values, but then again, it's probably fairly inexpensive to shoot in Greece than in America (the film is set and shot in Athens). As for the rest, well...touted as an erotic thriller, it was hardly erotic, and hardly thrilling, especially given the lack of interest in the characters. A bunch of topless women hardly qualifies as erotic, along with two characters I could care less about rolling around between the sheets. In terms of thrilling, the whole serial killer aspect was quite lame, especially since all we know is he's someone who drives a cab, all of his victims being comely woman who he just gave a lift to, and wears Velcro strapped shoes (which I thought were only worn by people unable to tie their own shoes like small children or extremely old men)...we know this because any shots featuring the killer are either annoying point of view (POV) shots, or even more annoying shots of the killer's extremities (his feet as he's walking, or his hands as he's preparing to `operate')...any halfway competent police force would have picked this guy up in relatively short order, but the movie is scattered with scenes of him attacking one woman after another...and this is where Marina Sirtis comes in...she's not a character in the story, but a victim. She plays a streetwalker who gets a ride home in the cab, and subsequently suffers the same fate as a number of others. I will say Ms. Sirtis had, at the time, an amazing set of sweater puppies, which we get to see in great detail...oh Councilor Troi! As far as Kirstie Alley's breakout scene, it is brief but there, and worth it...and, if you want to see more, watch the included featurette titled `The Films of Nico Mastorakis (Part One)' as they include the omitted footage of said scene, a good deal of it removed at the time for fear it would have been too racy. The plot is relatively straightforward, but complicated with a lot of nonsense like Jonathan, after becoming blind, venturing out into the world. He ends up in a subway, attacked by a gang of youths who appear to be rejects from the cast of West Side Story. Later on, after his operation and his somewhat restored vision, he returns to the subway where he was beaten and robbed under the pretense of being blind, hoping to confront those same street ruffians, and beats the snot out of them with the aide of a lead filled walking stick, which is about as violent as the film gets, as all of the serial killer sequences end right before he begins his cutting. And then there's the obsequious 80s rock musical scoring...egads! Too bad the killer didn't do away with the composer...that would have certainly been a victimless crime. All in all the film really isn't worth seeing, except if'n you got the Jones to see some boobage of starlets who later became famous (you know I do). If you're looking for a wonderfully suspenseful story featuring a blind character tormented by a sadistic killer, check out the 1968 film Wait Until Dark, featuring Audrey Hepburn and Alan Arkin.
The widescreen (1.85:1), enhanced for 16X9 TVs, picture on this DVD looks decent, but does contain minor print damage at a number of points. The DVD case claims this is a remastered director's cut, so I would have to hated to seen what it looked like prior. The audio comes through well, and claims Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, along with Dolby Digital Stereo. Special features include a trailer for the film, a featurette titled `The Films of Nico Mastorakis (Part One)', which runs about 56 minutes and is worth watching for the omitted Kirstie Alley romp scenes, isolated music tracks (oh the horror), filmographies/biographies, and previews for other Nico Mastorakis films including In the Cold of the Night (1991), Sky High (1985), Bloodstone (1988), and .com for Murder (2002). All in all 2 stars for the film, plus one extra for the fleshy pillows...
Cookieman108
By the way, after the credits end, there's text stating Jonathan Ratcliff, the main character in this film, will return in Run, Stumble, and Fall...I checked, and, surprisingly, no such films has yet to be made...wishful thinking on Mastorakis' part, I suppose...
AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!!! .......2005-08-10
This is a B movie. But it takes itself too seriously and has no charm. The acting is wooden particularly that of Joseph Bottoms. The incongruous accents with greek thugs speaking in Clockwork Orange voices really jars. The little bits of gratuitous nudity are ludicrously interposed and if you buy the movie for the Kirstie Alley scenes you will feel fairly short changed.
The plot might have worked with a decent writer, decent director and better acting but it doesn't have any of these.
More blind than anything else........2005-05-02
I must say that this movie felt like a cross between THE TWILIGHT ZONE and SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE.
The plot of the story is very bizarre. First, there is a serial killer on the loose. Second, a man goes blind from a knock on the head. Third, the blind man uses a souped-up walkman that allows him to "see." Fourth, the blind man somehow is able to track down the serial killer.
If you choose to sit through the entire movie, then never mind the summation. However, the whole film comes across like a very long, drawn out joke that has a cheesy punchline. Also, the special effects are absurdly bad (even by 1980s standards).
About the only thing the movie has going for it is a healthy amount of nudity, including a topless scene of STAR TREK's Mirina Sirtis. There is a flash of Kirstie Alley's nipple, but it IS only a flash and it is in the dark. Not enough to justify the cost of the DVD.
If you like to see "B" movies with "A" movie actors, this one might be worth seeing - for curiousity's sake. I have no idea how Kirstie Alley ended up in this one after being in some big-name films. Bottom line with this one: buyer beware.

It was big news when guitarist Eric Clapton and drummer Ginger Baker from the recently-disbanded Cream joined forces with keyboardist-singer Steve Winwood, whose history with Traffic and the Spencer Davis Group had made him one of Britain's most admired young musicians (bass player Rick Grech came from the more obscure Brit group Family), and the buzz must have been palpable when they took the stage before hundreds of thousands of fans on a June afternoon in 1969. They were known as rock's first supergroup, but there's nothing all that super about Blind Faith - London Hyde Park 1969, a record of the quartet's debut performance. In fairness, the group hadn't been together very long, and their one and only album hadn't been released yet; perhaps they were also taken aback by the size of the crowd and the hype that already engulfed them. Still, their 40-minute set (the DVD is padded with a ten-minute introduction) is surprisingly listless, not to mention out of tune. Having cemented his god-like status by way of Cream's endless bravura jamming, Clapton was clearly looking for something mellower and more song-oriented, but despite a few stellar moments, here he appears dour and uninterested. Winwood, meanwhile, seems to be searching for notes a step or two above his range, with the result that he fairly shrieks his way through all six tunes from the Blind Faith album (along with a pointless cover of the Rolling Stones' "Under My Thumb" and two others); it's Baker who provides the fire, especially on "Presence of the Lord" and the drum showcase "Do What You Like." The audio and video are surprisingly crisp and clear, which helps make up for the fact that the camera was apparently hand-held by a drunk who couldn't figure out what he wanted to shoot. It's cool to see these guys in action, but overall, interest in this document will primarily be due to the fact that it exists at all. --Sam Graham

"Well...All Right" lets get this .......2007-07-02
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.
Do you know how the Blind Faith tune "Had To Cry Today" got its name? Before the reviews from the Amazon buyers begin, there is a blurb about the DVD. Look at the line questioning why the band did a Rolling Stones cover! Answer-Along with over 100,000 other good folks they were paying homage to Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones who had passed away. Obviously, I am kidding about where the title of the song came from but it was to make a point that if you talk about a record or DVD it isn't bad to be aware of the group!
If fidelity of a recording wins out over history, there is nothing that will change your mind about owning a legendary day of rock and roll. The remarks about the quality of the recording are not malicious or defamatory but facts.
For those that want to preserve a treasure from the past and are collectors of Blind Faith material it is necessary own. The cover of the Rolling Stones "Under My Thumb" was a one shot deal and a necessity in the archives. "Sleeping In The Ground" did not make it on the one and only studio recording.
If any Clapton fan ever gets tired of listening to "Presence Of The Lord" they are an imposter! The song is a work of beauty.
As for Eric and the guys being uninspired, how would you perform if a friend of yours passed away light years before his time?
Those that took a stab at Mr. Winwood's voice not being in the best form should attempt with two days notice (Permits had to be secured) to come prepared with state of the art equipment to cover the size of a small planet, sing and play forty minutes while thinking of Brian's death and making sure he could properly hear his band mates mix from the monitors.
When it comes time to analyze how King Crimson, Blind Faith, and the Stones played in the park lets remember the circumstances and the results! Thumbs up to them and to Brian for his tenure with the Stones.
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

Dizzy??.......2007-06-01
I agree with Michael Burton. What horrible editing and camera work. When I saw this DVD on the shelf I almost flipped. "Could it Be,!?" I said. Wow a must have! Blind faith in 1969. I bought the disc immediatley and took it home with high expectations. I was tremendously dissappointed. As a guitar player i get very upset when I cant see what is going on. The morons showed eric claptons left hand like 3 times. I got to see more of the idiot stoners in the crowd than the band that I paid to see. Whoever edited this DVD should be sent to a retirement home. BOYCOTT!!
Kind of a rip.......2007-02-18
As others have pointed out, the group was just getting it together when the concert was filmed and it shows. While the audio is good, the performances in no way match the classic album they produced. Also, the "extras" added to fill out this fairly slight offering, particularly those for Clapton and Baker are taken from the almost equally slight Farewell Concert film made about Cream.
For die hard fans and completists only.
Keep the technical aspects in perspective.......2007-02-10
I understand the technical complaints made by some here, and wish the footage was shot differently. But it is what it is, and the perspective I have mentioned is this was a shortlived band but an incredibly talented one, with this being the only available video material. I think the music holds up extremely well, and the differences from the album they put out make this that much more interesting, particularly the different, electric version of Can't Find My Way Home, plus the tracks not on the album, including a rousing rendition of Stevie's Means to an End, the blues Sleeping in the Ground (Winwood had a great voice for the blues - it is too bad he didn't sing blues more often), and a great version of the Stones' Under My Thumb.
Looking back at Blind Faith, I feel particularly nostalgic and regretful about it. I was and remain a huge fan of Cream and the Traffic both before and after Blind Faith, but feel that Clapton got off track when he left England to go with Delaney and Bonnie and eventually the Dominoes, as that period coincided with his decline into drug use, which began before he left. Clapton never played with a vocalist who equaled Winwood, and it is wonderful watching him focus on the accompanist role as he does here. Baker is more restrained, tasteful and effective than in Cream here, and that is no knock on his Cream performances. Traffic was great, but Winwood never had the quality of bandmates for live performance he had here. It really was a shame Blind Faith did not stay together, and I am not sure I understand why they did not. Seeing this video makes me wish again they had, with all the great music that definitely would have brought.
I disagree with those who have criticized Winwood's vocal performance here. This is not a studio performance, and Stevie would take chances at times. It was part of his appeal as a performer.
I have greatly enjoyed this disc, and despite the technical limitations it has quickly become one of my very favorite ones. I have watched it a number of times and enjoy it more and more. I have recommended it to friends who have given it near universal raves as well.
In addition to the songs mentioned above, Sea of Joy is great, as the soloing on the studio recording of Grech playing violin or viola is covered by Clapton and Winwood switching off. Clapton does not use the wah wah during the solo on Presence of the Lord, and in general there is less of the two songs in one feel that you have in the studio version. Had to Cry Today closes the concert, and unlike the double tracked guitars in the studio version, this version has Winwood on keys. Do What You Like was truncated and rather sloppily so, but it is the exception in that regard.
In fact it is fascinating the way the band was able to get the range of expressiveness they did with very little use of different instrumentation or effects. It is a lesson to all casual performers who overuse effects as a crutch.
In short, I highly recommend this.
Classic group, classic event, so-so DVD.......2007-01-22
For die hard Blind Faith fans and not the casual fan.
When I saw this in the store I said to myself...self you gotta get this one. Well I did and I enjoyed it for the most part. It was nice to finally see this gig which I was not sure was filmed. I guess for it's age and the fact it was a first gig for a new group it was about what you would expect. Kind of sloppy playing and winwood voice a bit off at times, but it was their first gig. Overall the sound was just OK and the video good. In this modern age you think they could not have done a better remaster job??? It was filmed from odd angles and the standard psych style of the time, a lot of close ups of Winwoods hands on the keyboard, claptons guitar strap, baker's bass drum and how worn out it was...you get the picture just normal for the day. Kind of like Woodstock. Lots of shots of the crowd who was very mellow (or stoned) and several shots of this one chick whom I think may have been dead???
the extras were interesting at best. just some far out videos from the time for several groups like spencer davis, traffic (whom I love) and Cream. Some photos over music. Overall it is for the die hard Blind Faith fan (like me) and worth it if you can get it cheap. I paid $14.99 so not to bad. Get the Special edition 2-CD version of the original album. It is well worth it with lots of bonus tracks, great liner notes and pictures and a great remastered sound. Enjoy all.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Deal--Highly Recommended.......2007-02-27
As others have noted, the Zatoichi movie series is a classic--outstanding and immensely enjoyable. This collection is a good value. The DVD reproduction seems to be first-rate (each movie looks better than I remember seeing it decades ago), and the subtitles are very well done: Not only are the translations good, but they appear below the wide-screen picture rather than on top of the scene. Occasionally there's even a little note displayed above the picture defining a term, such as "palanquin" ('kago' in Japanese).
I have one small complaint. Each of the 7 movies is individually shrinkwrapped with 3 of those incredibly annoying antitheft stickers. I paid good money for the collection, so why am I treated like a potential thief and made to waste time every time I open one? That's just plain rude. I could have used Zatoichi's help getting the DVDs open for the first time, and had he decided to pay a call on the packagers, I wouldn't have tried to stop him.
Warning: This collection is a hook. Once you see all 7 movies, you'll want to see the other 19, and individually they'll set you back a good deal more. Oh, well!
Zatoichi box set.......2007-02-09
I'm hooked on Zatoichi now! I'm going to have to look for the rest of the collection, these movies were that much fun :)
A Zatoichi starter set.......2006-09-20
Zatoichi is an institution in Japanese film, almost like James Bond or Star Trek films, but with the difference that the same actor has played the main character since the series inception, and with an amazing consistency of quality from the original film in 1962 through the final installment, #26, in 1989. Shintaro Katsu played many roles in his life, but in the minds of hearts of everyone who loves samurai films he will always be Zatoichi.
This boxset contains seven DVDs, all from the tail end of the Zatoichi series when Katsu had taken over the production duties on the series. They are all quality films, with "The Festival of Fire" and "Zatoichi meets Yojimbo" being among the best of the entire run. Its a great price for seven DVDs as well, which would cost much more if bought individually.
For those starting out with Zatoichi, the films are diverse enough to give a good feel for the flavor of the series. Funny films and serious films, they all have the charm and appeal that only Shintaro Katsu could bring to the table in a samurai action film. And this is some seriously cool samurai action. Katsu was a great actor, and a great swordsman as well.
The films in this collection are:
Zatoichi #16 - the Outlaw - A complicated story with a vast cast of characters. Directed by Satsuo Yamamoto, who also made the 1968 ghost story "Botan Doro."
Zatoichi #20 - Meets Yojimbo - A highly anticipated showdown between Zatoichi and Toshiro Mifune playing his famous Yojimbo character. Directed by acclaimed samurai film master Kihachi Okamoto, best known for "Sworld of Doom" and "Kill!"
Zatoichi #21 - The Festival of Fire - Considered one of the best entries in the series, directed by the original Zatoichi director Kenji Misumi.
Zatoichi #22 - Meets the One-Armed Swordsman - Zatoichi meets his Chinese counterpart, Wang. Directed by Kimiyoshi Yasuda, who also made the original "100 Monsters: Great Yokai War"
Zatoichi #23 - At Large - A more humorous flick, Zatoichi delivers a baby! Directed by Kazuo Mori, who also made "The Return of Daimajin."
Zatoichi #24 - In Desperation - Directed by Shintarô Katsu, Zatoichi himself, this is a darker, more disturbing entry.
Zatoichi #25 - Conspiracy - Zatoichi meets his long-lost sister. A guest appearance by Takashi Shimura of "Seven Samurai." Also directed by Kimiyoshi Yasuda.
Shintaro Katsu: 1000 Oscars would not suffice........2006-08-18
This guy's acting is beyond this world. The stories and landscapes are incredible. Maybe the film-making technique is a little rusty some times, but in the whole it is effective.
If you must have all of the Zatoichi films.......2005-09-21
A well priced collection of the less wonderful story lines. Zatoichi is always the great blind swordsman but there is less atmosphere and character development in the films included in this collection.

After being unexpectedly dumped by her dream boyfriend, Lucy (Monica Potter, Along Came a Spider) wants to hide away in her apartment--but her friends set her up with a series of blind dates: a shy entomologist (John Hannah, Sliding Doors), a sensual playwright (Gael Garcia Bernal, Y Tu Mamá También), a hunky doctor (David Boreanaz, Angel), a self-centered baseball player (Anthony LaPaglia, Lantana), and a bickering businessman (Henry Thomas, All the Pretty Horses). We know she ends up marrying one of these five guys; trying to figure out which one, as the dates unfold in flashbacks, makes the movie engaging--up to a point. The script loses focus and Potter, though pretty, is too bland to sustain interest (though it should be said that she shows more flair in I'm with Lucy than in her previous romantic comedy efforts, such as the laughably bad Head Over Heels). --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
I'm With Lucy.......2007-01-27
Kinda quirky, and lots of different characters. Would have liked to see the plot going in better direction, but it's okay. Actors doing roles you don't normally see.
I'm With Lucy.......2006-11-11
I thought this was a really sweet chick flick. Great for a rainy afternoon with no men around. It shows just how hard it is to get back in the dating pool after a bad breakup. It also proves that first impressions aren't always right. Give a guy a chance and he just might be the right one if not the perfect one.
she picked the wrong guy.......2005-11-22
This movie would have been a lot better if Lucy had picked a different guy. She managed to end up with the least attractive, second-most annoying one of her dates, and they had absolutely no chemistry. In a romance movie, the viewer likes to identify with the characters, and I think this movie didn't do well because no one wanted to end be in Lucy's shoes at the end. Like some of the other reviewers, I initially decided to watch this movie for a chance to see Gael Garcia Bernal, but it was Anthony LaPaglia's performance and character that charmed me. What started off as an abysmal date actually turned out pretty well, and Bobby and Lucy had some of the funniest exchanges of the movie, and they had good chemistry. I wanted to see more of them together.
'Five Boys Meet Girl' or Vice Versa: Interesting Idea, Lovely Monica Potter, But ... Needs Something More .......2005-11-14
If you have seen the thriller `Along Came the Spider,' you must remember Monica Potter as supporting role beside Morgan Freeman. The film itself turns out far from a success, but actually, she is much better, and looks more natural in romantic comedy, and `I'm with Lucy' easily proves that. This lesser-known film is not going to make her famous, I regret, but it is still worth a look for her charms.
The idea is both simple and complex at the same time. Lucy meets five men in a year, and we are told in the first 10 minutes that she is going to marry one of them. They are Doug, Gabriel, Bobby, Barry and Luke, played by John Hannah, Gael Garcia Bernal, Anthony LaPaglia, Henry Thomas, and David Boreanaz respectively. So who is going to be Mr. Right for Lucy? (By the way, there is a man No.6 Peter played by Craig Bierko who appears briefly in the opening. Could be a dark horse, or not.)
So simple. And complex. `With `I'm with Lucy' writer Eric Pomerance attempts to break the familiar rules of romantic comedy, but despite its interesting idea, I don't think it works. The reason is just this: characters. Five male characters are all stock type, and few of them are round enough to show the depth. Some of the actors are also typecast. John Hannah is Mr. Nice Guy, and Hannah has played similar roles in the past (see `Sliding Doors' for instance) and Gael Garcia Bernal is a sexy guy with Latin background again.
Still it is joyful to watch Monica Potter as Lucy who, in spite of her peculiar propensity for blundering, is likable all through the film. Surprisingly her acting becomes very touching when Lucy shows unexpected subtlety in her character - see when she leaves one of the dates, both knowing that they would never meet again. This sad scene (which reminds me of one brief meeting of Hugh Grant and Emily Mortimer in `Notting Hill') shows the brilliance of the actors, but that is when we are reminded of the fact that we don't need as many as five dates to make one good romantic comedy.
With all good intention, good acting, and very good-natured heroine, the concept of `I'm with Lucy' is too ambitious for romantic comedy, which has strict rule - that is `Boy Meets Girl' & `Girl Meets Boy.' Five boys are good to make one good comedy, but you don't need five boys to write one good romantic story. Still, I love Monica Potter's Lucy, and three stars go to her.
Untitled.......2005-10-26
This movie was great. I saw this film 4 days ago and by the time the half part finished, I was engrossed. It really makes a great addition to someone's collection and I'd recommend you buy it. I'm giving it 4 stars only because it was a little predictable. Of course she's gonna marry the guy who ran to 10 different stores for her medicine!
A reviewer with a heart to know,
Penny (Possibly a future critic)

A pic about a man who can not get a date and is then cursed witha beautiful, neurotic woman he can't get rid of.
Customer Reviews:
A fun romp.......2007-05-13
I came across this movie by chance last night, and I really enjoyed it. Sassy, classy Woo (who seems to miraculously know all the right people in all the right and wrong places) is bent on jerking around her blind date, uptight lawyer-wannabe Tim. Bitter over being treated like an object, she's out to teach the man (any man, in fact) a lesson. And while she does put Tim and his friends through their paces during this first date from hell, Tim also inspires Woo to take the chip off of her shoulder for at least a little while to give love a chance.
Woo and Tim's adventures are interspersed with scenes from the goofy love life of Woo's cousin and Tim's best friend, the couple who set up the blind date in the first place. They are desperate to get Woo out of the way so they can indulge in a night of no-holds-barred passion. While some of these scenes are wicked funny, that particular sub-plot disappears towards the end of the movie without any particular resolution. This was a bit of a disappointment, but I guess the director/editors decided they couldn't top the "chicken ho" bit and opted to leave well enough alone. After that, the focus of the movie sticks to setting up Woo and Tim's "happily ever after." (Was even hoping for something in the credits that would wrap up that storyline, but no such luck.)
All in all, this movie was an entertaining romp, and not a bad way to spend part of an evening.
Hilarious! Hysterical!.......2006-06-21
After eight years of ignoring this movie - primarily due to the negative reviews it got - I finally got to see it the other night on TV. I laughed non-stop. It's a typical story of a blind date that seems doomed for failure but ends in romance. As saccharine as the end of the movie may be and as cynical and jaded I may well be, I'm not ashamed to say I had tears in my eyes as the end credits rolled. I thought it was great. Not all movies are made to answer some of life's most puzzling questions. Not all movies are supposed to be 'intelligent' or 'thought-provoking'. Not all movies are made to change the world. Some movies are made for us to be able to sit back for one and a half hours, forget all our troubles and just have a good scream. This is one of those movies and I'm getting the DVD. I can't wait to watch it again.
All my favourite comedy actors are here: Jada of course (looking as lovely as I've ever seen her), Dave Chapelle, Duane Martin, Paula Jai Parker, Aida Turturro, LL Cool J and Dartanyan Edmonds. Even Foxy Brown makes an appearance and it's not too bad either.
But most of all, there's Tommy Davidson. Ah, Tommy Davidson. Not everyone's cup of tea, apparently, but he always does it for me.
If this movie taught me one lesson it's to let reviews INFORM my decisions on what movies to see and buy, and not to let them influence them. This is definitely one for the collection!
This film is good........2004-09-20
I believe that this is a very funny film. Chappelle(sp?), Davidson, Pinkett-Smith. This is a very peaceful film because all the shots are done at night.
I can't remember much except for the chicken scene and the restaurant. It's almost as if I was sleeping, but watching the movie.
Films at night seem to bring peace to me for some reason. This one and Men At Work(Charlie Sheen and Emelio Esteves).
Well, to close, I wanted to say both of these movies are great, they seem to hit the right nerve for comedy.
-Calvin
A waste of film.......2004-02-26
I'm sorry, but this movie was NOT good at all. There were some moments where I chuckled, but this movie really was WOOOOOOO TERRIBLE. Wait for it to come on TV.
Woo-Wee.......2003-11-24
I absolutely love this movie!!! My husband and I can watch this movie everyday and still continue to laugh as if it was our first time watching it. We can't wait for it to come out on DVD in January.
For anyone looking to laugh this is a must see.
