One of those movies that helped usher out the era of action films that had plots that made any sense (and also helped reverse the direction of Patrick Swayze's career arc), Road House concerns a handsome, existential bouncer in a rinky-dink honky-tonk who owns both a degree in philosophy and a Mercedes. And that's perhaps the most believable aspect of the whole movie. Swayze stars as Dalton, "the best bouncer in the business," who runs afoul of Wesley (Ben Gazzara), the meanest SOB round these parts, by taking up with his former girlfriend, Doc (Kelly Lynch)--the only woman in town with an IQ approaching double digits, even if she had unfathomably hooked up with such a lowlife. Swayze had complained about being typecast as beefcake when this was made, but that didn't stop him from revealing as much skin as possible--even guys like him, as revealed in a luridly seedy scene in which one of Wesley's goons tells Dalton that he reminds him of the kind of boyfriend he had in prison (albeit in much saltier terms). It's so insulting to its audience that it's nice to be able to turn the tables and laugh at the filmmakers. --David Kronke

Description

Patrick Swayze stars in this sexy, "violent tough-guy thriller" (Fort Worth Star-Telegram) from the producer of Die Hard and The Matrix. Co-starring Ben Gazzara (The Thomas Crown Affair), Kelly Lynch (Charlie's Angels) and Sam Elliott (We Were Soldiers), Road House delivers no-holds-barred action that pushes the envelope for high-octane thrills! Swayze is Dalton, a legendary bouncer who comes to Jasper, Missouri, for a special purpose: to restore order at the notorious Double Deuce bar. In one spectacular fight after another, Dalton rids the bar of thugs and henchmen. But when he runs afoul of a ruthless crime boss (Gazzara) who controls the town, the stage is set for a blistering showdown that'll leave only one man standing!

4 out of 5 stars very dirty dancing.......2007-06-15

If Dirty Dancing is Patrick Swayze for the girls, then Road House is Patrick Swayze for the boys. This is what I'd like to call pure trash action. Great action thats highly entertaining, but accompanied by a ton of nudity and strong language that may not suite everyone. A strong R rating for Road House, but still ends up being a very enjoyable film, thanks to Mr. Swayze who takes out the trash.

Road House is a typicall full of action movie with a no brain story that actually makes that no brain story as interesting as can be, and placing enough action throughout to make the whole movie worth just about every minute. Pacing is wonderful, and I was totally engaged. Even watching it late at night kept me wide awake. The fights are great, and the fights are wild. I always figured there would be some crazy bar fights, but some, especially at the beginning of the film, are really crazy. Patrick Swayze did some study up on martial arts for this film, and he even has a scene practicing his katra. He gets a good fight against a guy named Jimmy, who is basically one of the bigger bad guys of the film, working under the boss. Its a hard hitting fight that goes on for a few minutes, and then has a wicked ending that I won't say.

Nothing much else to say about the film. Its a great action pleaser. For years I kept igonoring Road House thinking it was a pointless movie about pointless bar fights. Its actually better than expected. Considered a B movie all the way, I have to say its possibly the best B movie ever created.

3 out of 5 stars Schmaltz with violence.......2007-06-11

Patrick Swaze plays our hero, a combination of philosopher, tough guy, and knight errant, sort of a modern day Don Quixote. Sam Elliott makes the movie for me, he's a presence even in a B grade movie. Sam should be placed as the cowboy iamgo, he looks the part, sounds the part and as far as I'm concerned can outact "The Duke" any day of the week in a cowboy role.

This does not include what I consider to be Wayne's classic picture "The Quiet Man", in that he was superb.

Back to Road house, why Ben Gazarra played his role the way he did is beyond me, he sounds, looks and behaves like a character from an old Looney Tunes cartoon that lampoons crime characters.

I got it because I like to see the bad guys lose.

5 out of 5 stars Road House + RiffTrax = Comedy Gold.......2006-08-03

Road House mania has finally hit in 2006! Not only has this movie, which has been to late night TBS what Whoopi Goldberg is to Hollywood Squares, finally been reissued in a special edition, but now Mike Nelson from MST3K has released a RiffTrax for it! Road House was long acknowledged as a target that Nelson and the 'bots wished they could skewer on MST3K and he finally got his wish.

Listen, Road House is great. Tinker, Sam Elliot (voice of the beef council) and the oh so creepy owner of the Double Deuce are some of the best characters to ever populate small town Missouri. But watching it with Nelson's RiffTrax playing in the background took the unintentional (i think?) comedy of Road House to an entirely new level. Nelson is both knowledgable and funny, the kind of guy you wish your friends were as clever as. If we are ever blessed with a 20th anniversary edition of Road House, I would hope that Nelson's riffing can be included, because I can't imagine watching this movie again without it.

1 out of 5 stars Dreadful movie from the big hair 80s.......2006-07-31

A dreadful movie depicting men as macho s#$! and women as tarts. This was made in an era when people wore revolting tight stretch denims and hung out in pool halls and bars. It was also made to capitalise on the popularity of Patrick Swayze who had just appeared in the over-rated 80's teen musical "Dirty Dancing".

A very pointless movie is "Roadhouse". It does not deserve a bare bones DVD release let alone this new special edition. Is there really a market out there for rubbish like this, or am I the only one with taste in movies?

The redneck wits of Blue Collar Comedy Tour: One for the Road have gone a little more posh in this, their final appearance together. Performing in the gorgeous, historic Warner Theater in Washington, D.C., there's an air of class about the proceedings quickly and good-naturedly undone by the quartet's material. Bill Engvall discusses what it was like to assemble a trampoline for his kid and make a couple of discoveries while trying it out: "One, the dog doesn't like to jump. Two, I'm 20 feet in the air, and now my high school geometry kicks in. If you jump at an angle, you bounce at the opposite angle." He has another fond remembrance of youth: "Remember when you discovered you could burn ants with a magnifying glass? Then I saw an ant on my arm." Ron White, with trademark drink and a smoke in hand, talks about dieting tips for clean living: "Skinny people tell you: drink a lot of water, you'll be less hungry. You know what? Drink a lot of water, you'll be less thirsty." Redneck everyman Jeff Foxworthy comes armed with fashion tips for the Wal-Mart crowd: "There's no shame in having a spare tire around your waist. Just cover it up." He's also got vasectomy clinic slogans you don't want to hear: "Half-off. Everything must go." Finally, Larry the Cable Guy continues narrating his journey through cluelessness: "I got married seven months ago. We're already having trouble. Apparently, you can't talk dirty to your wife's sister." A little sidebar about the comedians' special trip to the White House is a cute diversion, while special features include a brisk question-and-answer session with a sharp audience. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Lost sleep because of this DVD.......2007-05-05

The DVD is FAR MORE funny then the CD. When all of them came out it was unbelievable funny. After watching this DVD I was unable to fall a sleep because I kept thinking thing about parts of this funny parts and kept laughing. If you have the CD you must buy the DVD because you miss so much that you don't see. BIG BELLY laughs with all the guys. DON'T miss the comments these guys make when they show the pictures there wife's sent at the end of the DVD. It's probably the best part of the DVD.

Ok so I have to admit I'm not a redneck but I love these guys I bought the first two Blue Comedy Tours from Amazon as i could not get them anywhere else and since them I was compelled to buy more - this dvd was what I was hoping it was going to be as we finally got extras!! Now i know some people bag these guys as white trash and all I got to say to that is at least you can watch this with the kids - unlike some other stand up comedies I have seen like Chris Rock's Bigger and Blacker - which is one of my all time favorites but there is a lot of swearing at least you can be sure your Mum or Dad can watch it and find it just as funny as you - I give it another Double Top Dogs! I hope they bring out another one - great stuff from:
Here's your sign, You might be a Redneck, Tater Salad and Get Her Done

4 out of 5 stars Side Splitting Laughs.......2007-02-26

From the first time I saw these guys on Blue Collar Comedy Tour: The Movie, I instantly thought they were funny. Bill & Jeff were their usual hilarious selves, Larry was ok.. his voice sounded a little off but Ron, wow... did he even pack on the pounds! I think all that drinking fattened him up and took away his ability to be funny.
I thought this installment easily was up to the level of the rest of them, and that end bit with the photos was the funniest end bit of all of the shows. Each of the guys' comedy was right on and had me laughing endlessly. In this one, all four routines were well spaced and perfectly long enough to be fully satisfied, plus the material seemed very fresh and new. The finale was also absolutely hilarious in seeing old photos of the guys from years before. Some of them were obviously doctored by a computer, but the guys' reactions to them were great. This was an awesome movie, the Blue Collar boys hitting a home run in their last at-bat. Overall, a must buy!

This unexpected sequel to the camp-cult favorite Road House delivers much of the same fast-n-furious action as its predecessor, though die-hard fans (and they're out there) might miss the over-the-top dialogue and plot devices that earned the original its reputation. Patrick Swayze, who starred in the first Road House picture, is nowhere to be found in the sequel--instead, it's Jonathan Schaech as a DEA agent with a connection to Swayze's character who comes to the aid of his uncle (Will Patton in a rare non-villainous role), the owner of a Louisiana bar that's come under siege by a local drug dealer (Jake Busey, who chews scenery with vigor). What follows is a barrage of bar brawls and room-wrecking stunts as Schaech takes his rightful place as the world's toughest bouncer. Suffice it to say that if you own the first Road House movie (or at least watched it more than once), you'll find the sequel a worthwhile follow-up. --Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars loses the feel of the original but still good stuff.......2007-06-19

Its a B movie, but its a well made B movie that entertains, though not quite as much as the first Road House. I expected no relation to the first Road House with this sequal, but there is. Jonathan Schaech plays a DEA agent, who is the son of Patrick Swayze's character from the first Road House. He takes over running the bar for his Uncle (Will Patton) who is in the hospital after getting the beat down from the movie bad guy, played by Jake Busey. The same "3 bar rules" are applied from the first movie. And as things progress, more and more becomes too much in common with the first Road House. I found that ok though, since most of the charcaters and action provided good entertainment for an hour and half.
One thing is for sure, the presence of Swayze is not felt at all in this film from Schaech, who semmed a bit bland. In fact, the whole movie is toned down from the first. But thats not to say there still isn't a good deal of action. Jake Busey, typical B movie actor, actually does a decent job of coming off as a decent villain, though he can seem like an over aged brat at times. One of the best treats is actor Richard Norton, playing the head boss. He is obviously showing signs of aging these days, but manages to still get in a good fight scene and pull of the villain role swiftly.
As for action, don't expect any crazy bar fights like the first Road House, but there are more one on one fights that are quite fun to watch. Schaech gets in a good fight with both Richard Norton and Jake Busey, both about the best scenes in the movie.
If you enjoyed Road House, this sequal is worth checking out. The similarities may be dissapointing, but you get more solid action to add to the fuel.

1 out of 5 stars Watch this for the action, just don't buy it!.......2007-04-21

Roadhouse two is a cute premise, trying to milk the idea of the original movie.

DEA agent Sahne Tanner (Jonathan Schaech) is the son of Dalton from the original film. Many times during this film, his character is told sorry about his father's death. that is the only real connection from this film to the other.

Will Patton's acting is under used as Tanner's Uncle Nate who owns a Louiisana roadhouse on the river, the Black Pelican. Tanner comes to help his Uncle Nate. Jake (Gary's son) Busey plays Wild Bill, the local drug dealer/gangster who wants the Pelican for his own base of operation and will do anything to get it.

The film is filled with action and low on plot. Not really what i call entertainment

SPOILER ALERT (DONT READ UNLESS YOU WANT TO KNOW!)-Busey Character tell Tanner that he killed Dalton, The epic finally battles ensues with the ending we all can see what happened through out the whole movie

Lets say this, I hope there isnt a ROADHOUSE THREE

3 out of 5 stars The Second best movie about Bouncers?.......2006-09-16

Roadhouse has become an inarguable cult classic. It was well made, had some decent actors in it, had some good fight sequences, hot women, and was tongue in cheek funny (whether the latter was intended or not.) Roadhouse 2 is a by-the-numbers sequel in almost every sense. It is basically the same as its namesake only not as good. It was a shame that the film-makers were unable to get Patrick "Dalton" Swayze to commit to making the sequel to reprise his role, if nothing else as a mentor to the next generation of world-famous bouncers. In this era of direct to video sequels of older movies in the attempt to create new "franchises" you could do worse than Roadhouse 2.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Sequel--just don't buy a copy........2006-07-25

This sequel was certainly better than I thought it would be. Will Patton, who plays the brother of Dalton (Pat Swalze) from the original film keeps the sequel together with his excellent acting. The film, however, is just too similiar to the 1st and it kind of loses your interest halfway thru--its so perdictable. The fight scenes are pretty good but any film with Jake Busey in it is just an average B movie---the guy can't act for sure. This film is worth a look--rent it-don't buy it--stick to the original one with better actors.

The creative team behind 1978's impressive animation feature based on J.R.R. Tolkien's Hobbit return with this entry drawn from Tolkien's famous Lord of the Rings trilogy. It's good work all around, and not at all the kind of feature-length cartoon that reduces good books to treacle. Orson Bean returns as the voice of Bilbo Baggins as well as that of the trilogy's hero, Frodo. John Huston is commanding again as the voice of the wizard Gandalf, and also in the vocal cast are William Conrad, Paul Frees, and Roddy McDowall. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Grand adaption.......2007-06-25

I found this film to be absolutely wonderful. The many songs were great, and the odd animation was beautiful, especialy the backgrounds. The animation was highly stylized, unlike Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the rings cartoon. Bakshi and his use of rotoscoping was horrid at some points, such as the battle of helm's deep, while this movie is beautiful throuhougt. The design of the creatures and characters was great as well. Truly a superior adaption of one of the greatest works of literature ever written.

1 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2007-05-29

It was nice to see this animated version. I had seen The Hobbit when it came out, but don't think I had seen this. Lots of fun

1 out of 5 stars Garbage! Pure trash!.......2006-10-13

The only reason I gave this one star is because I don't have the option to give it '0'! What pile of stinking refuse this waste of time and money is. Someone here said that you need to keep in mind that this was a made-for-TV cartoon aimed at children, much like the Rankin-Bass version of the hobbit (which I love, by the way). THIS VERSION OF RETURN OF THE KING SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN MADE! The story is NOT a children's tale! It's just NOT! Too much of the manuscript needed to be changed and toned down in order to make it so. The entire screen adaptation is worthless. The only memorable scene is before the Black Gate with the Mouth of Sauron (which was decently done despite the rest of the 'movie'). There is one reason, and one reason alone to buy this foul, pitiful excuse for a DVD; you already have the The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings animated movies, and you want to have the full tale.

GARBAGE! I SAY! TRASH! YUK, YUK, YUK!

3 out of 5 stars "Beware, the power that was simple now has grown".......2006-07-05

Rankin-Bass' "Return of the King" is by far the most underrated of the six films that have been adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien's works. One has to bear in mind that it was an animated prime-time television special aimed at children, that it was intended to be at least halfway comprehensible to viewers whose only previous Middle-earth knowledge came from the Rankin-Bass "Hobbit", and that the filmmakers were apparently unable to use any material whatsoever from the previous two volumes of Tolkien's trilogy.

Given all those restrictions and obstacles, it's amazing how good the Rankin-Bass RotK is and how much of Tolkien's work it captures. Viewers get to see many elements of the book that were excluded from the Peter Jackson films, from little things like the all-white standard of the Stewards of Gondor to big moments like Sam feeling pity for Gollum on Mount Doom. I also think Rankin-Bass' ending is sadder, and closer to the spirit of Tolkien's ending, than that of Jackson's trilogy.

So I wholeheartedly recommend this film for younger viewers. And as for all you adult Tolkien aficionados who have heard nothing but bad things about this movie: Give it a try; you just might like it!

4 out of 5 stars Great for Kids who aren't ready for the Peter Jackson trilogy.......2006-04-22

My boys (ages 5 and 7) have seen ads for the Peter Jackson trilogy, heard about it from classmates, etc. and were desperate to see The Lord of the Rings. My husband and I loved the trilogy but strongly feel they are far too young for the Peter Jackson version. I remembered watching the Hobbit on tv in the 70's and went looking for it and found this gem as well. Yes, the music is cheesy and very 70's--and yes, it's a very hurried summary of a very complex movie--but my children LOVE it. It is their current favorite movie and I can't wait until they can read the books and someday seen the "grown-up" trilogy. So, I'd say--valid criticisms aside--this movie succeeds admirably in allowing younger kids some access to the Tolkien world.

4 out of 5 stars Here's Your Sign!.......2007-03-14

Description

Glenn Tilbrook: One For The Road is the perfect film for dreamers, music fans and open road enthusiasts everywhere! Ever wondered what it would be like to go on a cross-country tour with a rock star? Filmmaker Amy Pickard did and made a movie about it. Expecting 18-wheelers and five star hotels, she found Glenn Tilbrook, the former lead singer of Squeeze, touring in a mobile home and bedding down in roadside campgrounds. This charming documentary follows Tilbrook on every step of his first solo tour of America in his beloved - but not so reliable - home on wheels. From the search for his missing RV; adventures with engine repair and exploding generators, to a musical house call that one fan will never forget: All access, all of the time. It's the story of how an established artist adjusts to his independent surroundings. It's a commentary on the current state of the music industry. But, most importantly, it's a human-interest story that transcends its musical base. Includes exclusive live acoustic performances of Squeeze hits "Tempted," "Black Coffee In Bed," "Take Me I'm Yours," "Up the Junction," "Hourglass" and more!

FULL SONG LIST: Another Nail in My Heart, Take Me I'm Yours, Goodbye Girl, Is That Love, Third Rail, By the Light of the Cash Machine, Is That Love, Pulling Mussels (From the Shell), Up the Junction, Tempted, Slightly Drunk, When the Hangover Strikes, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Hourglass, This is Where You Ain't, Parallel World, Some Fantastic Place, GSOH Essential

5 out of 5 stars Fun, Insightful and Fascinating.......2007-04-23

Glenn Tilbrook is a gifted musician who with Chris Difford wrote some of the finest sophisticated pop of the last 30 years. One for the Road follows Tilbrook on an RV tour across the States in support of his excellent solo debut The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook (+ Bonus Disc).

The narrative is very strong. Amy Pickard has crafted an intimate portrait of a man who loves his job. Kudos to Pickard for staying true to the story she wanted to tell.

This film will be of interest to anyone who has ever wondered what the music business is really like. Needless to say, especially with the inclusion of an insightful interview with Chris Difford, this is a must-have for Squeeze fans.

5 out of 5 stars I won't let anyone borrow this one. .......2007-03-19

If you love Squeeze, you'll love this. Yes, you know who they are and have heard their songs, you just have to search a little. The documentary is extremely inspiring and created by a person who adores her subject. Glenn is a wonderful entertainer and my only wish is that there was more of him singing. But then again, no matter how much singing was included, I would want more. I was extremely jealous of all the audiences and he truly knows how to connect and perform without taking himself too seriously.

4 out of 5 stars Unique, fun, excellent.......2007-03-04

I certainly hope Squeeze is one of those bands that, some day, get the recognition they so richly deserve. Perhaps some young band with some real musical skills will actually start writing interesting, meaningful songs, and possess the prolific ability to fill a disc with great music instead of one or two good songs so common in today's music. And maybe they will tip their hats to bands like Squeeze. Glenn Tilbrook still sounds great, and he seems to be taking it in stride that the music industry never got Squeeze the recognition (and hits) they deserved, and he's taken matters into his own hands, recording in his own studio, and touring solo. Two things that spectators in this video said stand out in my mind. One says that not many people can entertain a room full of strangers with just voice and guitar, captivate them, connect with them, and bring down the house. Glenn is one of those few. How true. The other, a Scottish gentleman, makes the point about how people who grew up in the 70s and 80s are still very much pop music lovers, but the well of good new music has run dry for us. Again, and sadly, how true. This unique and funny cross-country journey will make you remember that time when new and unique bands were the norm, and Glenn Tilbrook is still young at heart. I deducted one star for the following tragic flaw in this video: None of the performance segments feature the entire song, uninterrupted. They are used as backdrops for the plot of how Glenn interacts with his audiences and the RV cross-country trip. I'm sure the cameraman caught entire performances, and they could have at least been included in the special features section, because Glenn Tilbrook can still captivate a home audience as well. Perhaps future editions will include that awesome performance footage uninterrupted in its entirety.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasant.......2007-01-24

This one is so amuzing to watch, he's so funny and even a bit crazy from time to time. I've watched him live last summer and he's just the same and even developed the Jimi Hendrix number with playing is guitar behind his head just like Jimi

5 out of 5 stars Sheer delight!.......2006-11-04

Of course every Squeeze fan will want this disc, but it's really much, much more than just a collection of performances; truthfully, the performances, good as they are, aren't the best part of this DVD.

Others have noted how well Tilbrook comes across in ths film- and I can only echo their sentiments. He's just an absolutely charming fellow who dearly loves his music, and performing for people, as evidenced by such great moments as his leading a group of fans through the streets, singing and playing, while running *backwards*! Through all the difficulties of his trip- the missing RV, the breakdowns- he just smiles and takes joy in the small things, like buying strings of Christmas lights at Target to decorate the RV, or chatting with clerks, or visiting the home of a fan.

I first read of this DVD a few months ago, and put it in my Amazon shopping cart then, but didn't get around to actually buying it until a few days ago. If you've been similarly thinking about buying it, all I can say is just go ahead and get it. You'll be delighted.

Description

In an era when bands change members as easily as guitar strings, The Kinks have remained remarkably stable since their formation in 1964. Founding members Ray Davies (vocals, guitar), Dave Davies (guitar, vocals), and Mick Avoy (drums), are joined on this show by Jim Rodford (bass), and Ian Gibbons (keyboards). One For The Road showcases the diversity of the The Kink's vast repertoire, including the classics "Victoria" (described by Rolling Stone as being "English as a vengence"), "Lola," and "Celluloid Heroes." "Superman," "Catch Me Now I'm Falling," "Attitude," "Hardway," and "Low Budget" are also presented in riveting live versions. The Kinks have made brilliant music at the cutting edge of rock 'n' roll. One for the Road continues this tradition with the same inventiveness, energy, passion and poise that have always been theirs.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars One for The Ages!.......2006-08-02

The Kinks are one of the Top 5 seminal rock-n-roll bands of all time. That being said, there is shamefully almost no live video footage available commercially other than "One For The Road". This is the only commercial video release available of The Kinks in the 1970s, and this was filmed September 23, 1979 (you would not know that because the concert date is not given on the DVD)! This concert was filmed at the Providence Civic Center, Providence, RI, which is now piggishly named the "Dunkin' Donuts Center" (catch me now i'm falling indeed)!
The editing on this DVD is horrible as the concert is joined in progress (wha?) and clipped! For some wierd reason, the producers decided to begin the film showing The Kinks playing their encore "All Day And All Of The Night"; Ray Davies is soaked with sweat, his open shirt barely clinging to his body, and you're wondering why Ray is sweating so profusley and looking exhausted when the show has just started, LOL! THEN, it shows the band doing "Lola" and Ray is suddenly clean, dry, wearing his suit coat, bowtie and looking fresh (too surreal)! Besides the extremely poor editing, the concert is FANTASTIC! The Kinks put on a show for the ages! Ray is in top form strutting around and haming it up for the enthusiastic and rollicking Rhode Island crowd. The band consists of only three original members (Ray, Dave and Mick Avory), with Jim Redford (b), Ian Gibbons(k) and Nick Newell(k) making up the other half. The band makes a few errors, but Ray is able to keep the groove going with his expert frontman abilities. The setlist for this DVD is:
All Day And All Of The Night
Lola
Low Budget
Superman
Attitude
Celluloid Heroes
The Hard Way
Where Have All the Good Times Gone
You Really Got Me
Pressure
Catch Me Now I'm Falling
Victoria
During "Celluloid Heroes", footage of the band getting ready backstage is shown, and during "Where Have All the Good Times Gone", some early footage of the band in '60s is shown. As I said before, the concert is great! The band and audience feed off each other's energy and the peformance is classic! Shamefully, this is not the complete concert. The CD companion to this DVD has alot of additional music recorded from this tour at other sites, which makes it a must have in order to get the complete set list The Kinks performed during this tour. The DVD has a small interactive menu in which you are able to tour famous Kinks locations; in studio video commentary by Dave Davies on "Lola" and "The Hard Way", and a Kinks trivia game where the prize for winning is an additional clip of Dave Davies in studio commenting and reviewing the "Celluloid Hereos" performance. The Dave Davies commentary is OK, there is some interesting information from Dave as well as the usual Dave funny stuff. I do not know why Ray was not involved with Dave for this DVD release, I guess there was some brotherly animosity betwixt the two. It is interesting seeing on this DVD how at the end of the concert the band leaves the stage, while Ray lingers on the stage giving solo thank yous and bows. I mean c'mon guys, this is (or was) a BAND, a team if you will, where it takes EVERYONE working together to make a show. There is no Kinks without a band to play the music. Ray might think he is The Kinks, but Ray going onstage with a tape deck, speaker and mic and doing a karaoke version of Kinks songs is NOT The Kinks. Regardless, this is indeed a terrific performance by the Kinks, as well as being a classic document of late '70s Kinks. Highly recommended! Oh yeah, watching the Rhode Island audience sing along to Ray's pro-England paean "Victoria" is a real LFOL moment! Cheers!

3 out of 5 stars Not a Klassic, but Still a Keeper.......2002-08-25

Dave Davies nails it in his commentary: this period of Kinks history seems like a dream. The video documents that strange time in the 80s when the group found arena-rock fame, particularly in the U.S., and was playing to large houses --- complete with Spinal Tap moves. For those who prefer the cultish days of the 60s, or Ray Davies's ambitious concepts of the 70s, it's not a treasured era. At times, the Kinks come off as just another rock band. Yet Ray's songs are still in there, and he was in peak performing shape, so this DVD is worth owning as a period piece.
Unfortunately, the editing is ham-fisted. Songs are out of sequence, plenty of material from the show is missing and the beginning of Catch Me Now I'm Falling is just chopped right off. The audio commentary by Dave Davies is hit and miss: sometimes funny but more often of the "Oh, yeah. I remember this song! I used to love playing that!" variety. The brief tour through the Kinks London is fun, but the trivia quiz is lame.
All in all, a must for fans. Others should wait for a more definitive history.

5 out of 5 stars Kinda Kinky!.......2002-04-07

"One For The Road" shows the Kinks performing at the Providence Civic Center circa 1980. This is not an overproduced, slick concert with dazzling special effects filmed in a cavernous arena. It's a no frills, genuine rock and roll concert filmed in a fairly intimate, mid-size venue. You can almost smell the sweat and smoke. "All Day And All Of The Night" gets things off to a rocking start and whips the crowd into a frenzy. "Lola" is a definite crowd pleaser; who doesn't like a love song about a transvestite? Of course, several selections were taken from their most recent album at the time, "Low Budget." On one hand, that's one of their best albums, which makes for a very enjoyable concert. On the other hand, since there's only a dozen songs, many older classics from their vast repertoire were not included. Fortunately, a moving version of "Celluloid Heroes" and a blistering "You Really Got Me" are featured. The quintessential English song "Victoria" closes the concert out on a high note. Dave Davies provides humorous, if not always insightful, commentary. When talking about his physique back then he remarked, "I had the muscles. Ray had the bruises!" Being the only Kinks concert available on DVD at present, it is an essential purchase for every Kinks fan.

5 out of 5 stars One for the Collection.......2002-01-18

Fantastic footage from a late '70s concert in Providence, R.I. interlaced with running commentary by a ruminative latter-day Dave Davies. The concert can be viewed with or without commentary. Plus, there's a map and pictures of North London Kinksites. Any fan will enjoy this well-thought out and executed DVD.
I'd have liked more extra goodies befitting the DVD format, though; a very small complaint.

5 out of 5 stars Must-have for British Invasion fans!.......2001-11-02

I was not overwhelmed by the video quality but it was quite acceptable considering the age of the tape. The music itself more than makes up for any questionable video quality, as there is a great combination of old and new (for that time, around 1980, I think) songs that are just a glimpse of Ray Davies' genius. The entire band rocks, though, and even at his age Ray Davies is quite the showman! He puts Mick Jagger to shame! Ray jumps, runs, poses, hams it up, and in spurts acts plain crazy! Even if you are not that familiar with The Kinks you will enjoy the music on this DVD. Dave Davies does a running commentary and at times is pretty funny, especially when he makes fun of himself. Wish there could have been more extras, such as more songs, more archive footage, and perhaps some commentary by Ray or an interview of him. Minor complaints aside, this DVD is still worth having. Get it before it goes out of print!
