Joshua Jackson of Dawson's Creek and ex-model Jamie (formerly James, Pearl Harbor) King are (Lone) star-crossed lovers in this broad rural romantic comedy. Despite the fact that they've recently become step-siblings, Jackson and King are in love and want to flee their small Texas hometown for Hollywood. A kink in their plan arises in the low-wattage form of King's cousin (DJ Qualls), who lands in hot water with the local mob after robbing a drug dealer. Jackson must now make things right with a host of unsavory criminal types and get King to Tinseltown. Jackson is personable as the reluctant hero, and King is easy on the eyes, but the rest of the cast (which includes Matt Davis, Thomas Haden Church, and John Mellencamp) mugs furiously, and the script rarely aims any higher than poking fun at Southwestern stereotypes. --Paul Gaita
Description:
Joshua Jackson (The Skulls, TV's "Dawson's Creek") and Jaime King (Pearl Harbor) star in a hysterically rowdy look at small-town life and big-time trouble
deep in the heart of Texas. Also starring DJ Qualls (The New Guy, Road Trip), Matthew Davis (Blue Crush), Ryan Hurst (We Were Soldiers, Remember the Titans) and recording artist John Mellencamp (Falling From Grace).
With a couple grand in the bank and a dream in their hearts, Earl Crest (Jackson) and his girlfriend Baby (King) plan their escape to Los Angeles from their hometown of Bennett, Texas. But a dim-witted cousin (Qualls), an ex-con and an angry drug lord threaten to derail their plans. Now, with just 48 hours to straighten things out, Earl finds himself in the middle of a mess - bigger than the entire state of Texas!
Customer Reviews:
Cheese, anyone?.......2007-03-09
So, I first saw this movie upon the request of my boyfriend, who like me, lives in Texas. It's not an awful movie, it has a few spurts of comedy, but for the most part it's just one cheesey cliche moment after the other.
And I'm also worried that out-of-state viewers of this film (though God knows why they would want to watch it in the first place) might get the wrong impression of Texas. It's not just a bunch of BBQ joints and bars and boots and cowboys. Sure, we've got it all, but this movie makes it seem like California is salvation in comparison.
The acting was not terrible. The script was less-than-clever, and an actor can only do so much with what he's given. But accents go in and out a bit, and it just wasn't entertaining. It was cute at best.
I would say, okay watch the movie. But only if it's free. And only if you are prepared to roll your eyes.
sorry, think its a disappointment. .......2007-01-16
I was recommended this movie by two friends, in this recommendation they acted out a certain part of the movie which caused me to laugh but when I saw the movie, It didnt tickle my fancy. I would of been better off just having my friends re tell the parts, cause they verison surely is more funny than what was really acted out. Needless to say, I got about half way through the movie and didnt finish it as of yet, its just sitting around on the shelf collecting dust, which is more than it deserves.
Hysterical.......2007-01-10
The first time I saw this movie was the day I came home from the hospital after having my oldest child. I laughed so hard I was afraid I was going to bust my stitches. LOL I love it, every time I watch I still find it hysterical. This is the third copy we have bought...toddlers can destroy a DVD no matter how "indestructible" the industry says they are. I plan to keep this one under lock and key as it is my absolute favorite movie.
Very Funny..........2006-12-29
I agree with the reviewer that you MAY have to be Texan to LOVE this film, but it IS hilarious. When Jr. says the "bad guys" beat him up and made him feel bad about himself, I nearly cried from laughing. I borrowed it from a friend, watched it last night, and bought it this morning. I'll probably watch it with everyone I know.
"They torn down my Dixie Chicks poster!".......2006-04-04
My cousin brought this over a couple months back and told me to watch it. She said it was the funniest thing she's ever seen and I said "Joshua Jackson, funny?" and she said "JUST WATCH IT"...and she was right...this movie is downright histerical. Earl (Jackson) is engaged to his step-sister Baby (Jamie King, the hot former model) who is determined to be a soap star and thus is intent on moving to LA. They live in some rinky dink Texas town. Baby has a wayward cousin Junior (DJ Qualls) who she entrusts Earl to keep an eye on, but Junior is almost more trouble than Earl can chew. You see junior and his delinquent friend Tinker (Ryan Hurst from Remember the Titans) just robbed a pizza delivery boy, the only problem is that he wasn't a pizza delivery boy, but more like a drug runner for some important coke dealers and now Tinker and Junior (mostly junior) find themselves in deep $hit when these men want their drugs and money back. Earl then enlists the help of his gay best friend Jimmy (Matthew Davis) to help him deliver the goods that Tinker won't hand over. Problem after problem arises and someone loses a pinky finger resulting in some of the funniest dialog in movie history. I'm a huge fan of this film. The cast is spot on, and even though Jackson isn't funny in this movie (he's the serious hero type who hardly cracks a smile) the rest of the cast, including John Mellencamp as Earls hilarious stepfather (Baby's father), is downright brilliant!

A great look back at old times.......2007-05-16
Have to admit of all the punk DVDs out these days this has got to be my favorite, not least because of the content of the DVD but the commentary at the end from both the directors and members of Youth Brigade and Social Distortion.
I can only assume that some who have reviewed this DVD didnt watch the extra footage because for example the scene where the song 'another state of mind' was written was staged, other scenes such as the video of the Youth Brigade violenc has crowd shots from Circle Jerks amongst others mostly because the directors couldnt find good enough footage from Youth Brigade shows.
Its great to hear the 2 different perspectives from the directors who while wanting to make a loyal film on punk culture had to keep in mind that they had to sell the thing and they had contracts to stick to while band members complained about how many scene were unrealistic. Scenes such as endless shots of toothless punks to make the film look more 'real' the shot of the band sneaking in the back door of a show because the 'jocks' were waiting for them (in actual fact the 2 shots were from 2 different shows and while the band snuck in the back door the camera crew went in the front braving the crowd! Other great things to look for are the punk chick/model from DC. Realy interesting to hear the contrasting comments. The band who deeply disliked that she was even in the film as she was unknown in the DC punk scene while the directors disliking the snobbish attitude of punks towards her pointing out that this was everything punk was not supposed to be!
Great to see Social Distortion live though, one of the great bands of punk. Hear they always tried to sound like Americas answer to the Clash, not so sure about that but they were a great band.
Great DVD, one you will watch and watch again. One point though, dont know why this is featured as having Ian McKaye in it as though he had some leading role. He is in it for about 5 minutes. If you are buying it to see some early Minor Threat there is about 2 minutes from a live show when the sound went and the crowd sings along. Other than that you will be very disappointed.
Definately not MTV...right?.......2007-04-12
In Another State of Mind, we follow two fledgling LA punk bands, Youth Brigade and Social Distortion, on a tour accross the United States, as they leave a wave of destruction and cacophony in their wake.
This nostalgic throwback to youthful rebellion and hapless advocacy of the DIY ethic is quite contrary to what one might expect from current punk rock phenoms like Good Charlotte and Canadian pop-punkers Sum-41. Although, despite their best efforts(shooting in both 16mm and video), the deft editing and high production values are quite obvious.
Adam Small and Peter Stuart, whose mission was to prove to the masses that punk rockers were more than "mindless morons," produce a high quality film, with most of the focus on the relationships of the band members and the ensuing drama within the tour. Mike Ness and Shawn Stern, from Distortion and Brigade respectively, are often taken aside for "Real World"-esque interviews, exposing the seedy underbelly of the seedy underbelly that is punk rock.
As much as I enjoyed this film, one can't help but walk away wondering if a documentary of this quality and focus holds true to the cornerstones of punk rock: angst, violence, and the DIY ethic. It's ironic that Mike, Shawn, and the members of DC band Minor Threat devote their lives advocating these laurels, yet they participate in this new age project aiming to cut them off at the knees, exposing the drama of the softer, sweeter side of punk rock. If that's not MTV, I don't know what is.
Road Rules has never sounded better.
PUNKS IN NEED.......2007-01-05
This one-hour documental portraits the life on tour across America of a Social Distorion in its very beginings, and the radical boys of Social Youth. The main event of the DVD is to see a very young Mike Ness without a single tatto!!! and the writing, along the tour, of one of his emblematic songs: Another State of Mind. Necessary to those interested in subterreanean american punk history.
Underground Punk Scene.......2006-11-03
Being a big fan of Social D, I enjoyed seeing the making of "Mommy's Little Monster" album. Enjoyed the scene of the time.
I don't have a title........2006-01-25
I bought the dvd yesterday when I went on a splurge at Best Buy cause I had so many gift cards... I don't own any albums by Social D, Youth Brigade or Minor threat but this movie is alright. It reminda me a lot of the book Philosopy of Punk which I also recently read. The DVD offeres a lot of insight to the whole "scene" but personally it wasn't informative at all seeing as I already knew about it. At any rate, if you're into the three bands I'd pick up this movie just cause it has great tour footage and such also, it shows how the members of the bands really are behind the microphone and personally I always wondered who the asses of the underground are.

A Bored State of Mind.......2006-11-14
It won't take long to become bored with this sorry excuse for a movie. Although Danny Aiello is a fine actor, he can't do much with a script as bad as this one. It is a slow-moving, poorly-written, poorly-directed, muddled mess. Few films can match this one for sheer pointlessness. When he is working with a decent script and a competent director, Aiello can work wonders. However, this sorry movie doesn't give him any room to shine. Avoid this one; it's a clunker from start to finish.

The presence of cult movie icons Fred Williamson and Paul Naschy is the main draw for this 1992 French/Dutch/Belgian-produced Troma release that borrows heavily from Stephen King's Misery. Williamson headlines as a detective looking for a couple who disappeared after a car accident; what he doesn't know is that the pair (Troma regulars Don Hannah and Lisa Gaye) were taken in by a disturbed former nurse (Maouk van der Meulen) who is now holding them captive. Williamson and former '80s teen actress Jill Schoelen (as his partner) give solid performances, and Naschy makes the most of his cameo as a lecherous asylum official, but the film itself (co-produced by John Desert, whose long relationship with Troma has yielded Maniac Nurses Find Ecstasy and Rabid Grannies) offers low-wattage suspense on its limited budget and clichéd script. Troma's DVD is typically loaded with extras, including interviews with Desert, Gaye, and the director and screenwriter as well as trailers for other "Tromatic" titles like Toxic Avenger IV. --Paul Gaita
