Inspired by the Brothers Grimm, Jorge Luis Borges, and Guillermo del Toro's own unlimited imagination, Pan's Labyrinth is a fairytale for adults. Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) may only be 12, but the worlds she inhabits, both above and below ground, are dark as anything del Toro has conjured. Set in rural Spain, circa 1944, Ofelia and her widowed mother, Carmen (Ariadna Gil, Belle Epoque), have just moved into an abandoned mill with Carmen's new husband, Captain Vidal (Sergi López, With a Friend like Harry). Carmen is pregnant with his son. Other than her sickly mother and kindly housekeeper Mercedes (Maribel Verdú, Y Tu Mamá También), the dreamy Ofelia is on her own. Vidal, an exceedingly cruel man, couldn't be bothered. He has informers to torture. Ofelia soon finds that an entire universe exists below the mill. Her guide is the persuasive Faun (Doug Jones, Mimic). As her mother grows weaker, Ofelia spends more and more time in the satyr's labyrinth. He offers to help her out of her predicament if she'll complete three treacherous tasks. Ofelia is willing to try, but does this alternate reality really exist or is it all in her head? Del Toro leaves that up to the viewer to decide in a beautiful, yet brutal twin to The Devil's Backbone, which was also haunted by the ghost of Franco. Though it lacks the humor of Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth represents Guillermo Del Toro at the top of his considerable game. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Following a bloody civil war, young Ofelia enters a world of unimaginable cruelty when she moves in with her new stepfather, a tyrannical military officer. Armed with only her imagination, Ofelia discovers a mysterious labyrinth and meets a faun who sets her on a path to saving herself and her ailing mother. But soon, the lines between fantasy and reality begin to blur, and before Ofelia can turn back, she finds herself at the center of a ferocious battle between good and evil.

5 out of 5 stars really an amazing film.......2007-07-05

Wow, this was an amazing movie, beautiful cinematography and compassionate, wonderful acting, testifying to the power of art and imagination -- and ultimately, however, its limits. The world is what it is -- there may be one where kindness, decency, and sacrifice are rewarded, but it's not the one we inhabit; but for the sake of Ofelia it's almost too painful to believe it doesn't exist, somewhere.

5 out of 5 stars I'll never forget this movie........2007-07-05

This movie scarred me silly! I knew it had subtittles, but I just figured it was a cute fantasy film like Harry Potter. No, no, no! This movies is not in the least bit cute, rather it is extremely violent and ultra surreal, and it leaves great big holes in your stomach. Despite all of these horrid emotions I felt while watching this movie, I must admit, It's the most artistic film I've ever seen. The actors are all verry good, and the story is oscar worthy. This movie is special, and it's something I am happy to recommend, but I insist that if your a parent, keep this far away from your children. This is a verry scarry as well as a verry heart breaking fatansy film for adults only.

5 out of 5 stars Man's Labyrinth.......2007-07-04

This is neither about Pan, nor his labyrinth. Beautifully done, brilliantly acted and scripted, this is a dark drama of two tales.

An evil Captain wants to wipe out the commie partisans in his sector, but obstacles are placed before him by the altruistic housekeeper and physician of his compound, sited somewhere in a wooded area of Spain, in 1944. He also wants his male child to be born there with him, at all costs, including that of the mother's life, if necessary, he tells the doctor.

A little girl, his stepdaughter, wants to see her mother's pregnancy-gone-bad come to a happy end, as well as find her own bliss, but crosses an exceedingly thin line between fantasy and reality, or psychosis and the brutality of living.

The Captain ruthlessly murders any partisans--or even suspects whom he finds, and mistreats virtually everyone else not wearing the same uniform he does. He makes ordinary "evil" look like a Girl Scout cookie sale.

The little girl becomes involved with a Faun, of dubious character--bad--good--what is it--who lives in a subterranean labyrinth, which we don't see much of, faeries, a magic book, a very scary monstrosity who forever dines at an untouchable banquet, and a horrible enchanted toad who deadens the roots of a great and mystic tree.

So, we have two story lines, several Heroines/Heroes, and one very bad Nemesis, all working toward a final and central denouement which is handled with a startling lack of sentimentality, and a twist that left me wondering.

The two plots merge for the denouement, via the newborn baby, whom everyone wants for their own end: the little girl, the evil Captain, the housekeeper, and even the Faun.

The director never shows us for certain whether the little girl imagines everything that is magical, or it is all somehow real. I would like to think that by leaving out the True of it, as such an obviously open question, it was all real.

However, in the same manner, the question's white-hot and glaring lack of resolution seems a cop-out. I think the ending needed a tad more development to make the central question more tastily nebulous.

This movie is a dark, brilliant, and stunning little success. It is NOT for children at all.

3 out of 5 stars Refreshing, Imaginative, Different.......2007-07-04

If you seek refreshment and innovative storytelling this is it.

A Spanish language film, Labyrinth is the darker more sinister sister of The Chronicles of Narnia. It is a haunting allegory set in an unlikely place - if you pay attention you can see the Biblical references and follow the line all the way to the end, where it becomes less subtle.

If you're not into that 'stuff', it's okay - it's still a magical ride that is also a bit of a mystery. The visual effects are understated and lack the 'look at me' Hollywood glamour, makes them all the more attractive.

The backdrop of the story adds historical realism and another layer to follow but complements the underlying meaning of this paradoxical tale of light and darkness.

If you don't mind watching and reading you'll like this little bit of escape.

1 out of 5 stars Hated it.......2007-07-04

FIRST - there should be warnings to folks that it's subtitled and I don't see that anywhere - Pretty much everything on the DVD and descriptions are in English except the movie itself. It might be a good movie for stylist, process enthusiasts, or people who enjoy tragic tales, but for some one who is an escapist, or just like to actually enjoy a movie, this is not the one.
I'd call it a perverse exploitation of darkness and depression - choices only of one evil or another - reminds me of that disburbing feeling I got when I read le malentendu in high school. From reading the other reviews, I guess I'd have to say this movie was just too far above me.

The Nativity Story is a remarkable, if frustratingly restrained, act of imagining the tale of Christ's birth as a flesh-and-blood drama actually set in Israel two millenia ago. Written by Mike Rich (Finding Forrester) and directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen), the film makes very strong impressions in a scene-by-scene way. Beginning with the slaughter (bloodlessly portrayed; this is a PG movie) of Bethlehem's innocents under orders from a paranoid King Herod (a dark and knowing Ciarán Hinds), the film then jumps back a year to the prophecy that informs Zechariah (Stanley Townsend) that his wife, Elizabeth (Shohreh Aghdashloo), will bear a child. Meanwhile, Elizabeth's cousin, the adolescent Mary (Keisha Castle-Hughes), struggles with her family to make ends meet and is promised to the carpenter Joseph (Oscar Isaac). Soon comes word to Mary, via an angel, that she will carry, while still a virgin, the long-awaited Messiah who will liberate the Jews from Herod and his Roman benefactors. Thus begins a detailed account of Joseph and Mary's hard travel to Bethlehem, while three Magi spend months crossing the desert trying to rendezvous with some point below the convergence of three heavenly bodies in the night sky. Hardwicke and Rich anchor all this in period detail, though what proves most moving are relationship nuances, especially the friendship and trust that emerge between Mary and Joseph after he is told in a dream that she speaks truthfully about her miraculous pregnancy. While The Nativity Story should appeal to almost anyone as a straightforward narrative, it is far from a secular version of the familiar Biblical tale, and thus feels a bit stifled. It might have been nice if the film could have breathed a little more with imagination, but The Nativity Story makes up for it by ingeniously weaving hints of things to come, later in Christ's life, into the action. --Tom Keogh

Description

It was the cruelest of times. Under Herod's torturous reign, families struggled to survive and yet, in the midst of utter turmoil, a young woman's faith is put to the test. Join Mary (Keisha Castle-Hughes) and Joseph (Oscar Isaac) on an incredible journey of hope and discovery. Epic in its scope, yet intimate in it's portrayal of this historical family, this "wonderful film" (Bill Zwecker, Chicago Sun Times) is "a family feature that will be cherished for years to come!" (Greg Russell, WMYD-TV, Detroit).

5 out of 5 stars More than a story.......2007-07-05

I bought this for my daughter and her Pastor husband as a gift for the birth of their son. They watched it together after she got home from the hospital and THEY LOVED IT.

It is predominantly biblically accurate except that the script basically gives an account of the events occurring in 1 year which is why it is probably titled a "story". However, the acting and the production details are wonderful. It brings to mind the question, if you believe the account of Jesus' birth what are you doing about it in your life?

My daughter and I both fell in love with Joseph who appears always in the background in the Bible but you truly realize now how he would have been a great man. Kind, compassionate, a selfless giver, a strong leader and protector, loyal, filled with honor and integrity and a great teacher. Wow! You see he and Mary's relationship truly blossom while he and Mary are traveling that hundred miles over that rugged terrain. How many men would make that journey and take care of a girl who was not carrying his child? It's beautiful to see how these two people trusted God and are obedient to him.

With regard to children viewing, for those of you who actually monitor what your children see, the issues of Herod's slaughter of the Innocents can be bypassed (there are two). Herod and his son are played to perfection, as well as Elizabeth and Mary's parents.

And yes, I know all about the controversy over Keisha Castle-Hughes' out of wedlock pregnancy, but you know what ... I am not to judge.

Wish there were more movies like this!

5 out of 5 stars DVD The Nativity Story.......2007-07-03

Saw this movie in the theatre, and it is the best rendition of the story of Jesus parents, and the events surrounding his birth---that I've ever seen. I bought a copy and had it sent to my God son---it is so good.

4 out of 5 stars It's Like a Documentary.......2007-06-19

I know it's entertainment but it plays like a documentary, in a good way. This movie really takes you there; about the most authentic I've seen. I even loaned it to some folks who lived in Israel and they thought the same thing. If you've never been to the Holy Land but want to experience Christ's birth first hand, watch this movie. Very well done and good acting. Done with respect to the subject and the audience.

5 out of 5 stars Blessed... to have seen this movie:).......2007-06-13

This movie is wonderful. From the very beginning you are captivated. The scenery, the struggles, the hardships and the characters touch us profoundly. Seeing Christ as a tiny baby, awes us. Goosebumps and tears overwhelmed me throughout this movie. A bit of humour, surprisingly enough, has also been incorporated. For example, when the Three Wise Men meet in the desert and one makes a comical remark. Their companionship is very believable. Hope and faith combine, to guide the characters , through their nearly impossible journey.

5 out of 5 stars the Nativity Story.......2007-06-08

A wonderfully made film showing the birth of Christ so realistic! the scenes are beautiful and so authentic! Thanks for this great Christian film.

Ted Neeley makes for a wimpy looking Jesus in Norman Jewison's screen adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice "rock opera," which was a smash on stage in the early '70s. Jewison (Other People's Money) adds some good exterior settings in the desert, but Lloyd Webber and Rice's dialogue-free story (everything is sung, as in a real opera), with its quasi-profundities about the inner demons of principal figures in the life of Christ, is the real hook. Yvonne Elliman sings the show's best-known song, "I Don't Know How to Love Him." --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Christianity Meets Rock & Roll. Does It Get Any Better?.......2007-07-03

I have loved this movie ever since I first saw it in the theater oh so many years ago. And it gets better with age. If you have not seen this movie and have even the slightest inclination to do so, DO SO! I have seen Superstar live on stage several times and this movie equals those productions. Ted Neely IS Jesus Christ Superstar and the supporting cast is superb. And, of course, the music simply ROCKS! Do yourself a favor and own this movie. You will find yourself watching it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Best Rock Musical Ever.......2007-07-03

First movie to be made from a 2 album Broadway soundtrack and last movie to be filmed in Todd-ao vision. This sensational movie boasts songs and lyrics of Andrew Llyod Webber and Tim Rice, and incredible musical execution by Ted Neeley, Carl Andersen and a host of others. Ted Neeley protrays the most believable Jesus ever. Movie was filmed on location in the Holy Land and has some of the most stark, miminalist and beautiful scenery ever used. Coomentary by Director Norman Jewison and Ted Neeley is fascinating, and recounts many unexplicable events that occurred while movie was being made. Should have definitely been included in AFI's top 100 films.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2007-06-27

This edition is exactly the way i remembered it. I was inspired to purchase this after seeing Ted Neeley live. Believe me.........he still has it. Returning to the movie brought back found memories of this old favorite. The music is timeless.

5 out of 5 stars For the Ages.......2007-06-04

This one is for the ages. I first heard the "brown album" as a teen and was blown away by every character except for the Jesus character. Then I saw this movie. Wow! Mr. Neeley's performance certainly brought that character to life. It ignited a passion in me which is still with me today. You could say that it was this movie and Mr. Neeley's performance that awakened my slumbering spirituality. It is wonderful!

Don't miss the commentary. Mr. Jewison is especially endearing when, even after 30 years, he still seems scandalized by his actors' dismissal of his warnings to be careful on dangerous sets. Most DVDs offer extras but this commentary by Mr. Jewison and Mr. Neeley went far beyond what an audience could expect. It was a simple, generous offering. It is a gift.

5 out of 5 stars JC Superstar revisited.......2007-05-30

I saw the movie originally when I was in college and was moved by it. My daughter and I just saw Ted Neeley's farewell tour of JC, so I bought this for her 13th birthday. She loves it.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Dirty Dancing.......2007-06-27

This is such a classic! Who doesn't love this movie?! I've watched it many times. Great love story, wonderful dancing, and excellent cast!

4 out of 5 stars I was hoping for a little more.......2007-06-23

While I can't claim to have seen this movie more than a couple of times, I did look forward to all the extra features of this dvd. I was a little disappointed in the outtakes and deleted scenes, etc, in that they were quite brief given the enormous amount of material that must have been filmed and not used. I do highly recommend the real dirty dancing scene with "Johhny and Baby"-its the most erotic thing I have ever seen in clothes. I did enjoy the commentary and trivia as well. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Finally the edition fans have waited for..........2007-06-11

What child of the 80s doesn't remember Johnny pulling Baby out of that corner and letting the whole world know that real men do dance?! Well, we can all breath a sigh of relief because the wonderful people over at Lionsgate have finally put out a version that includes lots and lots of extras including deleted scenes, alternate scenes, extended scenes, outtakes plus more that haven't been included in any edition before. My only complaint is that they left out Dirty Dancing Live in Concert...which means I'll probably hang onto my Ultimate version but nonetheless I'm thrilled with the new extras. If you loved this movie 20 years ago, be sure to pick it up for the next 20.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Ode to a Lost Time & Place.......2007-05-31

Great music, great dancing, great atmosphere, great romance, and enough schmaltz to make this a wonderful DVD to own (even if you have forgotten about the charm of the Catskills)>

5 out of 5 stars "I carried a watermelon?".......2007-05-30

Dirty Dancing (20th Anniversary Edition) is still the best and sexist dance film I have ever seen. Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey sizzle, smolder, and set the screen on fire with their undeniable chemistry. It's kinda funny since both stars couldn't stand each other off camera. I am so glad I waited 'til this new edition came out, great special features. Watch the deleted scene where they really dirty dance in Swayze's bungalow, it's hot, hot, hot!!!!!!!!!!!! This movie is a classic and everyone should own this tender film about first love, trusting those you're afraid to trust, and having the time of your life. I highly recommend it!

Description

An epic in the spirit of THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, this widely acclaimed motion picture is a meticulous recreation of the turbulent era of Jesus and the events that changed the course of history! Narrated by Golden Globe nominee Christopher Plummer (Best Supporting Actor, AMERICAN TRAGEDY, 2000), it's the bold and powerful story of Jesus as told by his disciple John. The best-loved but least understood of the gospels, John presents a uniquely human portrait of courage and passion encompassing Jesus' entire three-year ministry, the final years of his life. Intimate and reflective, THE GOSPEL OF JOHN offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the incomparable life and times of Jesus Christ.

2 out of 5 stars Why does Jesus have that weird smirk on his face?.......2007-07-04

My brother raved about this movie, and so I foolishly bought it without seeing it first. What a disappointment. It was long and boring, but worst of all, Jesus walks around the whole time with this odd, vacant half-smile on his face, as if this is just a game. If you want to see a realistic view of Jesus' experience, watch The Passion. Gross, but true-to-life.

My last word on the subject: "loving" does not equal "always smiling and soft-spoken." Ugh.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational!.......2007-06-15

It is so nice to finally have a modern film about the life and ministry of Jesus Christ!! What I mean by that is while I love films like "The Nativity Story" and "The Passion of the Christ", they focus on the parts of Jesus' life that almost every human being knows, has already seen, read about, heard about etc. It's like Christmas and Easter. Christians always show up for church for those two days out of the entire year and thats all they know or care about because those are the "glamorous" parts of Christianity. What I love about "the Gospel of John" is that it spends more time on the LIFE of Christ, emphasising His ministry, His teaching...really the true heart of Christianity. For those of you who want more than the Nativity Story or the Easter Story this is the film for you. The actor who plays Jesus is perfect. While I appreciate the interpretation of Jesus in films like "Jesus of Nazareth", I always wanted to see a Jesus that was less "scary". In "The Gospel of John" Jesus is human, accessible, inspirational, beautiful, tender, strong and one can definitely see how he was able to capture our hearts and really tick off a lot of the religious scholars of His day! The rest of the cast is quite good as well with the exception of Mary (the mother of Jesus). I think she must have known the director or something because she was seriously miscast. Fortunately she is barely in the film.

Another reason I enjoyed this film is that it includes Mary Magdalene in almost all the scenes with the disciples. I appreciate that because I believe she usually gets stuck in the whole prostitute role (which I don't believe). Here I think she gets a little more credit but still not as much as she probably deserves.

I hope you enjoy "The Gospel of John" as much as I did!

3 out of 5 stars Fatally Faithful to the Fourth Gospel.......2007-06-14

Unlike most Jesus films, which tend to be harmonizations of all four gospels, this movie attempts to be strictly faithful to the Fourth Gospel. And that's just what's wrong with it. John's gospel insists that faith in Jesus as the Son of God is what's necessary for salvation. Those whom he calls will believe and be saved; everybody else is damned. Unlike Mark, Matthew and Luke, in which Jesus is an apocalyptic prophet proclaiming the coming kingdom of God and the way to behave until it comes, John's Jesus is a self-aware God demanding faith in himself, and he's plenty angry at those who won't give it. Thus John has no Beatitudes, fewer miracles, no eucharist -- but plenty of long exhortations.

The movie The Gospel of John stays very close to this portrayal, and the results are quite disappointing. Cusick does what he can with the role of Jesus, but the script demands that he spend so much time scolding his fellow Jews and proclaiming his own divinity that it's hard to understand what anybody sees in this guy.

Moreover, many of the episodes we've come to expect in a Jesus movie -- episodes that tend to add drama and sympathy for the character of Jesus -- are missing from this film. Where's the nativity? The temptation in the desert? The baptism by John? The agony in the garden? They're not here -- because they're not in the gospel the film is based on. Instead, there are plenty of interminable speeches, many of which are circular and redundant. By insisting on sticking to the text, the film winds up being very uncinematic, despite all the lavish production values. Unfortunately, you can't fire a screenwriter who's been dead for two thousand years.

By the time the Gospel of John was written, Christians were facing a growing straightforward rejection by mainstream Judaism, and the gospel reflects the bitterness and recriminations of the community for which it was written. So if you're looking for real anti-semitism in a Jesus film -- one in which Jews are truly depicted as hard-hearted dolts squandering their last chance for salvation -- forget about The Last Temptation of Christ or even The Passion of the Christ. For anti-Jewish antagonism, nothing beats The Gospel of John.

5 out of 5 stars A story as old as time...........2007-06-08

This was the most moving thing I have seen in my life. I sat spellbound with tears streaming down my face the first time I saw this. What a great depiction of the boundless, endless, timeless love the father has for us, his children. There may be a few inaccuracies in the film, I have not checked them out yet, but regardless it is a true masterpiece. Highly recommended and well done for a 'religious' film. Better than 'The Passion' by Mel!

5 out of 5 stars Must see!.......2007-05-20

Very good movie.Just as the gospel of John does, this movie is very detailed on the ministry part of Jesus life.No skimping on the dialog or teaching/miracles.Doesn't have the big Hollywood feel to the movie which makes it more realistic.See it now!

The feverish spectacle of a summer camp for evangelical Christian kids is the focus of Jesus Camp, a fascinating if sometimes alarming documentary. (Shortly after its release, the movie gained a new notoriety when Ted Haggard, president of the National Association of Evangelicals, who appears near the end of the film, resigned his post amid a male prostitute's allegations of drug use and sexual misconduct.) For most of the film, we follow a charismatic teacher, Becky Fischer, as she trains young soldiers in "God's Army" at a camp in North Dakota. Some of the kids emerge as likable and bright, and eager to continue their work as pint-sized preachers; elsewhere, the visions of children speaking in tongues and falling to the floor in ecstasy are more troubling. Even more arresting is the vision of a generation of children home-schooled to believe that the Bible is science, or Fischer's certainty that America's flawed system of democracy will someday be replaced by a theocracy. (In one scene, a cardboard cut-out of George W. Bush is presented to the children, who react by laying their hands on the figure as though in a religious procession.) Filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady maintain neutrality about all this, maybe too much so (they throw in some interviews with radio host Mike Papantonio to provide a liberal-Christian viewpoint) and one would like to know more about the grown-ups presented here. Power broker Haggard is the creepiest person in the film, an insincere smooth talker whose advice to one of the young would-be campgoers comes across as entirely cynical. Time will tell whether the film's Christian soldiers will be marching onward. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars Mind control.......2007-07-02

This movie is a must-see for every American.
I believe also that we who are not involved in "church" are going to be crushed between the millstones of the Holy Warriors that the Jesus Camp is producing and the Holy Warriors that the Taliban are producing.
Sadly,on opposite sides of the world,hate-filled adults are getting away with abusive brainwashing of pre-pre and pre-pubescent children who have no way to judge for themselves whether or not they accept what is being dictated to them."ABUSE" is the only way to describe what goes on in this camp. Not only is Haggerdy a creep, but there is some pervert-biker type with a voice that has filtered out lots of whiskey, meth, tobacco and pot,no doubt, who looks and scares these kids like The Devil himself who is leading the moppets on a pro-life demo on the steps of the US capitol. This film alternatively scary and funny.
The cut-out image of the dummy George Bush that was brought on stage for the children to fawn over produced alternative feelings of revulsion and hilarity in me. I almost saw this in a theater in Portland,OR and I wish I had, because that scene most assuredly would've brought down the house.
What is really bad, though,is the fact that these manaics have a good chance of by stealth, taking over even more than they have already.
God protect us from your followers!!!
I thank Jesus I don't live in Missouri.

5 out of 5 stars Pity the children.......2007-06-25

Jesus Camp is a riveting but bleak film.

Most eight year olds are not aware of, nor concerned with, government, politics, ideology or theology. That's not to say they're incapable of giving such issues their interest, nor that their development is likely to be impaired by encountering and thinking about them. As this film so clearly demonstrates, it's how you teach that makes the difference.

Jesus Camp has an obvious point of view that isn't sympathetic to the Evangelicals it portrays. Perhaps when the filmmakers began this project they didn't have any particular bias towards apocalyptic Biblical literalists. I don't really know, but I can image how neutrality could be easily subverted after meeting some of the people in this film and observing their lives and their "teaching" methods. It's difficult to feel any sympathy for people of any faith who as a result of ideological motivation see people as things, pawns in a supernatural game, rather than as individuals to be cared for and loved. It's even more difficult to deal with the enmity that arises on seeing parents and "teachers" using intense emotional appeals and peer pressure as methods of ideological indoctrination, creating in the minds of a children a world of "us" and "them," the kind of world that doesn't normally exist for children until after puberty.

Watch this film and despair the generation of lost children produced by this 21st century generation of know-nothing parents. I hope the filmmakers do a follow up in 10 or 20 years so that we can all see what becomes of these experiments in Evangelical indoctrination.

4 out of 5 stars Religious child abuse to the extreme.......2007-06-24

It was traumatic watching this documentary. I wished it wasn't fact, but sadly it is. There's no doubt that it's interesting and well made. But despite how sick the "camp counslers" are shown to be, there won't even be a ripple, because they emotionally abuse these poor children in the name of religion. And mark my word. This is sick extreme child abuse. I kept waiting for child protective services to pull up and rescue the kids from the control freak Christian adults, who can't stand it that 100 percent of the rest of the world doesn't think like them, so they prey on children, poisoning their unformed minds. If I believed in an abusive egomaniacal God, who expects complete submission or else, I would want millions and millions of other people to believe in the same God so I could justify my dsyfunctional relationship with him. I think the words of the great author Christopher Hitchens says it all: "Those who lie to the young in this way are wicked to the extreme". These selfish Christian liars take the cake.

5 out of 5 stars Teaching Compassion.......2007-06-17

Sitting through this movie is appropriately uncomfortable and hard to watch. While it has been criticized as a highly prejudicial view of evangelical children's programs, it has actually created sympathy and empathy in our family.

Before this movie, my children had difficulty having anything but contempt for the christo-bullies in their school. (When Evangelicals decided to reincorporate their faith into public schools they forgot to instruct their children to be kind, gentle or even mannerly. Consequently, the biggest snobbiest, nastiest bullies in my children's schools are the "good" Christians who use their faith to belittle their fellow students.)

This movie helped my children to see those bullies as victims of emotional blackmail. My kids are far more understanding now that they have witnessed the highly emotional services in which children are manipulated into making commitments far beyond their emotional maturity and their intellectual reasoning skills.

My kids came away from the movie less angry and more compassionate.

4 out of 5 stars "A" for Entertainment Value, "F" for Objectivity.......2007-06-16

As an evangelical Christian whose own church and camp experiences couldn't be farther removed from those portrayed in this film, I would caution anyone who might be inclined to consider it an accurate snapshot of evangelical culture. It is absolutely not. The families and ministries featured are of a decidedly peculiar kind, prone to an almost primitive emotional frenzy and superstition, and their tactics with children and even their beliefs would come under heavy criticism from most of the mainstream evangelical community.

I was dismayed that the filmmakers purposely allowed the possibility to linger that the most colorful and warlike figurative language used by camp leaders in the film ("lay down your life for Jesus", etc.) had potentially violent or dangerous connotations. No effort was made to give the proper context of what was said, yet included in the bonus material was a scene in which Becky Fischer (a central subject in the film) says plainly that as Christians they categorically denounce violence as a tactic, and that their "weapons" are prayer and votes. I can only conclude that this balancing and sane bit of information didn't make the final cut because it diffused the anticipated sense of apprehension on the part of uninitiated viewers.

Add to that the cheap contrivance of having a radio talk show host provide inline running commentary, just in case the audience hasn't independently managed to arrive at the conclusion that a wave of right-wing religious crazies are on the verge of imposing a theocracy on unsuspecting secularists everywhere.

While I was disturbed by some of what I saw, the bottom line is this: we live in a free country. Churches are allowed to be big and influential. Just because you disagree with someone doesn't mean that they are "up to no good" when they practice their beliefs as they see fit and vote as they please. Nor do they have to answer to anyone for passing those beliefs on to their kids. Anyone who doesn't know an irreligious family who demands compliance from their children to their own naturalistically apocalyptic, left-wing doctrines doesn't get out much.

Movie 1: The Gathering
Alien envoys come to the giant space station in the pilot that launched the five-year TV series.

Movie 2

Amazon.com

The Babylon 5 pilot movie The Gathering was originally broadcast in 1993 a full year ahead of the regular show. A somewhat dull tale of an attempt to assassinate Koch, the Vorlon ambassador to B5, the feature served to introduce Commander Jeffery Sinclair (Michael O'Hare) and Security Chief Michael Garibaldi (Jerry Doyle) as well as familiarize the audience with the unique environment of a five-mile-long space station in the year 2257. Missing many of the main cast, and suffering from a leaden pace and mediocre music score, series creator J Michael Straczynski later improved The Gathering by tightening the cut for a special edition (the version released on DVD), adding some deleted character moments and commissioning a new score from series composer Christopher Franke.

Four new TV movies were part of the deal to syndicate Babylon 5. In the Beginning is a prelude set 10 years before Babylon 5, telling the story of the Earth-Minbari war. Told retrospectively, many of the mysteries revealed gradually in the main series are recounted, making the show a collection of spoilers for newcomers while adding little for established fans. It is effective to see events only previously talked about, and enjoyable to have most of the main cast playing younger versions of themselves. River of Souls is a self-contained adventure featuring a return of the Soul Hunters from Season One, while Thirdspace offers a spectacular Lovecraftian space opera which slots into the saga after the end of the Shadow War. A Call to Arms is the most important of the TV films, laying the ground for the future TV series Crusade. Set five years after the Shadow War, it tells the story of a Drahk revenge attack on Earth. A final showcase for Bruce Boxleitner as Sheridan, the story fits between fifth-season episodes "Objects at Rest" and "Sleeping in Light." The cliffhanger ending sets the scene for new starship Excalibur to boldly go on a five-year mission to explore strange new worlds and find a cure for the Shadow virus infecting the Earth. --Gary S. Dalkin

Two of the movies skip in a few places. The movies were good. Came in good time

5 out of 5 stars It keeps getting better and better!.......2007-06-06

Babylon 5 - The Gathering: "And so it begins..."
A good pilot to an excellent series, Babylon 5 - The Gathering, brings to the screen the parallel stories of prominent people aboard a major station under Human control in neutral territory.
The setting is the Babylon 5 space station orbiting Epsilon 3. The year is 2257, nine years after the Earth-Minbari War (one year before the series begins), and representatives from the four major space-faring races, the Centauri, Humans, Minbari, Narns, as well as numerous minor races have all gathered at B5 in a last effort at maintaining galactic peace. The arrival, however, of the fifth major space-faring race's ambassador, the Vorlon Kosh, will result in quite a bit of turbulence...
Michael O'Hare, Mira Furlan, Andreas Katsulas, Peter Jurasik, and the rest of the cast, carry out their performances well though one can tell that they are a bit uneasy, as is the case with most series in the beginning. 4 Stars

In the Beginning: Guaranteed to shed a tear
The year is 2278 and an elderly Emperor Mollari sensing his end is nearing narrates the story of the Earth-Minbari War and its heroes to a young Centauri boy, his sister and their nanny.
Bruce Boxleitner, Mira Furlan, Andreas Katsulas, Peter Jurasik, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors' performances are highly commendable.
In the Beginning contains a lot of information found within the first four seasons of B5 and then more, therefore, it should be viewed at some point during season V, preferably right before Sleeping in Light, the last of the original episodes. 5 Stars

Thirdspace: "It's anti-life itself"
Though I haven't yet read the book (for which I've heard good things), Thirdspace the movie was quite a disappointment.
Set during Season IV, the crew of Babylon 5 recovers a huge ancient artifact, which when activated could bring more doom and destruction than the Shadows themselves...
1) To start with there is no Garibaldi, Gkar or Londo and their absence is definitely felt.
2) Everybody is too stiff. Performances seem forced and not natural, especially Dellen and Vir who are not their usual selves.
3) Sheridan scoots through an intense space battle in a space suit (!), dodging both friendly and hostile fire (!), plants a nuke manually (!), gets out avoiding the guardians (!), survives the nuclear blast and then jokes with Delenn... Hmmm... Am I missing something?
4) Finally the elevated level of horror served as a repellent more than anything else.
2.5 Stars

The River of Souls: "Life in Death... Immortality!"
The year is 2263, six months after President Sheridan's departure for Minbar, and the Soul Hunters return with an unexpected visit to Babylon 5... en mass.
Though most of the major characters are absent (similarly to Thirdspace), excluding Captain Lochley, Security Chief Zack Allen, Lt Corwin, and Michael Garibaldi, the River of Souls turns out to be excellent in every possible way; the setting, the plot, the dialogues, the special effects, and the music are all wonderful!
There is also the surprise, though not great, appearance by Martin Sheen, who probably should have stuck to the original plan and played the archeologist instead of the Soul Hunter. 4.5 Stars

A Call to Arms: Now this is a Babylon 5 Movie!
AMAZING from start to finish, A Call to Arms brings to the screen the long awaited conflict with the hated Drakh! The Year is 2267 and President Sheridan is contacted by the Techno-Mages who have been keeping tabs on the Shadows' former servants/allies and who inform him that the Drakh are on the warpath. Their target... Earth!
Bruce Boxleitner, Jerry Doyle, Jeff Conaway, Tracy Scoggins, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)!
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, and the special effects are simply incredible!
I wish I could give it 6 Stars!!! KEEP'EM COMING!!!

5 out of 5 stars THEY DID A BETTER JOB ON THIS SET OF DVDS........2007-05-28

THIS SET OF DVDS HAS MORE COMMENTARY THAN THE SEASON 1-5 DVDS OF BABYLON 5. IT DOES NOT HAVE A LOT OF EXTRAS, BUT THEY CERTAINLY PUT MORE TIME, THOUGHT, EFFORT, AND MONEY INTO THIS SET THAN THEY DID THE OTHERS. THE PACKAGING IS A LETTER BETTER TOO. IN THE END THE MOVIES ARE VERY GOOD. MY FAVORITES WERE "IN THE BEGINNING", AND THE CRUSADE PILOT "A CALL TO ARMS." "A CALL TO ARMS," IS AS MUCH A CRUSADE STORY AS A BABYLON 5 STORY. I DO NOT KNOW WHY THEY DID NOT PUT IT ON THE CRUSADE SET OF DVDS.

5 out of 5 stars Babylon5. The Movies. A must-have accompliment........2007-05-27

Babylon 5, The Movies are the icing on the cake to the wonderful origional series. They enhanse the already powerful plot and give the viewers a fuller path where this great epic is headed. I found The Gathering to be entertaining, but some-what primitive in its alien portraits, especially where Delenn was concerned. However her appearance was quickly rectified in the movie, In The Beginning, and she became more delightful as the series progressed. The origional slightly stilted characterisations eased out after that first pilot and the cast came to live their parts. I personally believe that the movie, In The Beginning, should be viewed first as a kick in to anyone wanting to become involved with whole series. Anyone who owns, or enjoys Babylon 5, the series wouldn't want to be with-out this great set of Movies.

One of the movies - 'In the Beginning' got to me all scratched up. I tried playing it but it froze up on me toward the end of the movie. I gave Amazon 2 stars for this because at least they promptly refunded me my entire purchase back + the shipping. I don't know what happened but it's kind of wierd that only one of the DvDs was damaged. It was in the socket when I got it too so I don't think it was caused by shipping. Oh well, buyer beware I guess.
