The 1988 follow-up to Paul Hogan's international hit "Crocodile" Dundee is less interesting and more formulaic than the first film, while a silly suspense element about a retaliatory drug kingpin has an air of contrivance. The story reverses the course of "Crocodile" Dundee, this time beginning in New York City and switching to the rugged bush country of Australia, where Dundee and his companion (Linda Kozlowski) run into trouble with the aforementioned villain. Crocodile Dundee II continues its recipe for making great movies! All the ingredients are there; adventure, action, romance, and great comedy.

Our modern day Tarzan is now a bit more mature and the story, while still very funny, carries a stronger message. Mick Dundee, played by Paul Hogan, is still in New York City with journalist Sue Charlton, who is played by Linda Kozlowski. Sue's ex-husband who is also a journalist, opens the movie covering a case in South America, where he gets involved on a story that exposes him to real danger. He is shooting the bad guys when he witnesses a murder.

Mr. Tanner sends the film to Sue but she is not home to get it, Mick Dundee does. The bad guys visit New York City to retrieve the package, taking Sue hostage. They soon realize she knows nothing about the situation, she did not get the phone message Mr. Tanner left for her, and she does not have the package.

Rico, the drug dealer played by Hechter Ubarry, is the type of villain that will do whatever it takes to achieve power and wealth, and knows the pictures would not only compromise his plans, but they would prove how corrupt his organization is.

Mick Dundee is able to save his lady from the kidnappers thanks to the help of a gang. Very funny moments are seen as he "bonds" with this group, which soon find themselves captivated by the Australian. As the film progresses, Mick realizes that he is out of his element and that if he is to have a chance at avoiding the danger represented by the drug-dealers, he must travel back to Australia, where "he can see them coming."

Back at home in Australia is where the real fun begins as we now see the bad guys in trouble. One by one, in some of the best moments of this film, we see them succumb to Mick Dundee. One of the best scenes has an aborigine poking at one of the captured villains and Sue asks what he just said to one of Mick's friends, only to hear that... "he is asking whether we can eat them." Of course, the villains faint at the realization that they are no longer in control.

A superb sequel to one of the best characters created... the one and only... Crocodile Dundee!

I am a total Paul Hogan Fan! I like him in everything he has done. Crocodile Dundee II takes his character a bit farther than the first movie. The first movie is a marvelous Love Story, this one shows some of his history. Love this movie.

I am very impressed by the hilarious antics of Mike Dundee (Paul Hogan). I also like his down-to-earth character.

What I have enjoyed most in watching the three movies is that, I have learned that one can use sheer human ingenuity & creativity to overcome obstacles, no matter how intimidating they are...some life-threatening ones, too!

Just watch how Mike Dundee (sometimes with his side-kick) out-thinking all the predators &/or bad guys in all three movies...in the treacherous hot outbacks of Australia & the mean streets of New York...[When a mugger poked a small knife in front of his face, Mike took out his jungle knife & said: "That's not a knife. This is a knife!"] & the mercilessly cold concrete jungle of Los Angeles.

On the whole, I have enjoyed watching again all the three movies, each with its own engaging story & romantic notion of adventure.

As a strategy consultant/success coach on life (survival) skills, I have added these three movies to my resource repertoire.

Hard Boiled was the last film John Woo did on location in Hong Kong before his eventual move to Hollywood. Part reaction to the escalating violence Hong Kong was experiencing at the time, the film pays homage to the Hong Kong Police.

Starring Chow Yun Fat and Tony Lueng as two policeman out to stop an arms smuggling triad. The two actors exhibit all of the characteristics of any actor in Woo film. Woo also uses his trademark filmmaking style and ulta violence to make his points. Look for freeze frames and Sam Peckinpaugh like slow motion throughout the film.

This is not for the squeamish or those not fond of gun violence. Approximately 100,000 blanks were fired making the film and the body count tops 200. Part of the point here is that violence affects us all. Bystanders are not spared by Woo. The only hope may lie in the next generation. Woo states in his commentary track that this is why he often employs infants in his films. Woo says that he was angered with the Hong Kong situation at the time of filming and his anger shows.

The version I viewed was the Winstar edition. The quality of the transfer was fine but the subtitling could have used some improvements. However, we find out in the commentary that Woo is not too concerned with dialogue he would rather have images tell the story. The sound is also adequate. We have a mono track that would really be improved by at least a stereo remaster. This is not the best edition of the film out there but unless you are willing to shell out the big bucks for the out of print Criterion this is the best you are likely to get.

This edition has production notes and filmographies, trailers for Hard Boiled and The Killer and an excellent commentary track by Woo and Terrence Chang.

Worth seeing.

A classic .......2007-03-28

This movie truly is a classic action movie. Chow Yun Fat at his best. I loved it. Be warned, Dragon Dynasty is re-releasing a 2 disc edition in July with all new bonus features.

I love this movie so much. I haven't watched it in a while mostly because I have a widescreen TV and the old Criterion version is non-anamorphic. The good news is that Dragon Dynasty will be re-issuing this John Woo classic in May. I cannot wait and those of you who can't find it, stop wasting your money on ebay and stop spending way too much. You'll be able to get your own very soon. Start the countdown...

THE BEST ACTION MOVIE EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-01-27

THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST ACTION MOVIE EVER MADE! JOHN WOO IS A MASTER DIRECTOR. CHOW-YUN-FAT IS THE MAN. THIS MOVIE HAS THE BIGGEST BODY COUNT IN ANY MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN. THIS IS ACTION FILM-MAKING AT ITS UTMOST FINEST. DEFINATELY ONE FOR ANY HARD-CORE ACTION FANS COLLECTION.

Great action, messy plot..........2006-12-27

This was the last film John Woo made in Hong Kong before he left for Hollywood (which has royally screwed him over, but that's another review). Many people debate whether Hard Boiled or The Killer are Woo's best. My money is on The Killer, but I still really admire the hell out of this film. It has some of the most amazing action sequences ever committed to celluloid. Are they realistic? Absolutely not. One of the funniest things about Woo films is that the characters rarely, if ever, reload their guns. The teahouse shootout is a great example. Yun-Fat picks up the bad guys' guns, and fires at least 40 rounds or so with each gun. Automatic guns hold 10 bullets or so in a clip, so where Yun-Fat found the extra clips is unknown at this point. The plot of this film leaves quite a lot to be desired. The film was a troubled production. The original script had Tony Leung's character as a pyschotic killer who was planning on poisoning little children by tampering with baby formula. After shooting the teahouse shootout, the film shut down for a month, and a major rewrite took place. They ended up making Leung's character an undercover cop. This was due to the fact that Chow Yun-Fat thought the Hong Kong public would find a baby killer too disturbing. Woo agreed, and shut down the film (Hong Kong films are quite similar to Hollywood in that respect). A lot of this film doesn't make an ounce of sense when Leung's character kills many people, just in order to stay in character. I'm not really sure about that. Thematically, the film is a mess. But the opening shootout at the teahouse, the warehouse raid, and the utterly amazing shootout at the hospital (it lasts nearly 45 minutes, including an unbroken take of 2 minutes and 42 seconds) make this film worthwhile. This film didn't have as much depth as Woo's other Hong Kong work, but it still manages to outdo all Hollywood films in terms of character and depth.

Ray (Bryan Brown), the resident white police officier in a remote region of the Australian Outback finds himself in over his head when a young male is murdered for descrating a local sacred site. Ray's attempts to locate the killer are hampered by the local aborginal community which views the death as required and justifiable by ancient tribal law. And so the confrontation begins.

Another great Australian film dealing with the vast differences between "white man's law" and the "old ways" of aboriginal society. Great performance by Bryan Brown and a nice cameo appearance by David Gulpilil.

Touches the living heart.......2003-01-23

Bryan Brown heads an excellent cast in this tightly-scripted story about a clash between Australian and Aboriginal law. Brown is a "whitefella" torn between his duty as a policeman, and his connection to the land and community. His counterpart (Ernie Dingo) is a "blackfella" with the opposite problem--his aesthetics lie with the mainstream culture, but his heart forces him to stand by aboriginal customs. Behind these two men are a host of other characters, each adding a rich note to the theme of ambivalence connected to life in an outback settlement.
Dingo's final plea for tolerance strikes right to the heart. A wonderful film.

One comment: DVD is not captioned and the complex story can be a bit hard to follow--there were places I had to back up and watch twice to understand the Aboriginal side of the story. It was worth it!

PROVOCATIVE DEPICTION OF THE CLASH OF TWO CULTURES.......2000-06-08

Made in the Australian outback, this movie depicts the clash of cultures between the Aborigine people and the 'white man.'

Wonderful acting by Bryan Brown as the police officer (Ray)trying to maintain peace and Ernie Dingo as an aborigine preacher who is sometimes caught between the aboriginal 'ways' and the 'white man's ways.'

A murder investigation brings about bitter tension between the two peoples as Ray tries desperately to bring about justice that is fair to both cultures which doesn't always work.

Very good movie. Each time you see it you see something that you didn't the time before.

Powerful depiction of the collision of cultures.......2000-03-05

A few years ago, when visiting the Australian outback, I met an elderly Aboriginal man who asked me, through an intereter, "Did your parents or grandparents tell you where you come from?" By this, he went on to explain that he meant was I descended from the kangaroo, lizard, emu etc? This is not a question that a European American would easily be able to answer. When I saw this excellent Australian film, it reminded me so much of that encouter, because it depicts the divergence of the Aboriginal and European cultures in Australia. The acting and cinematography are uniformally good.

In a way, "Dead Heart" is a sort of "Mississippi Burning", set in Australia, as it depicts racial intollerance. But in another way, this film is a far more profound examination of the complexity of culture collisions. It would be interesting to view this film together with other films that explore this fascinating theme in Australia...notably Nicolas Roeg's "Walkabout" and Werner Herzog's "Where the Green Ants Dream". Too bad that, to my knowledge, there are no Aboriginal directors creating films that depict their views of all this. Perhaps they are too busy living life than viewing it at a cinema.

INTENSE DRAMA - Very Australian.......1999-04-04

This movie involves the struggles of two cultures - Aboriginal and white man's - trying to live side by side in a very demanding and unredeeming environment.

It pits the Aboriginal laws against the white man's laws and shows how the officer (Brown) assigned to the post, struggles to integrate the two and keep peace between them, although not always succeeding. Bryan Brown is, as usual, very good.

What a letdown.......2007-01-24

After getting into Miles Davis' music a few years ago, I looked upon this film as one of the holy grails of jazz. Because it is out of print, I rented it so I could decide whether or not to buy a used copy. I was immensely disappointed at how poorly made this film is--and I wasn't hoping for a great film, but a decent little film with a jazz story and soundtrack. The characters weren't likable, and the direction and film editing were clumsy and sophmoric. This film had nothing but the soundtrack going for it, and that I could listen to on a CD. It looks as if Miles was picking up some extra cash and the makers were exploiting one of the greatest names in jazz. I like quirky little films that have some flaws, but this film has just too many.

For a good jazz film, try Round Midnight with Dexter Gordon. That one hit the mark.

a good movie featuring a rare view of Miles Davis.......2005-04-08

The film itself is simple: seemingly low budget and definitely not a Hollywood-directed-produced film. Its nonetheless charming. Colin Friels plays John "Dingo" Anderson, a man supporting his family in the outback of Australia doing odd jobs by day and playing in (what his band-mates call) a "bush-band" in the local halls at night. Although the band has fun, Dingo takes his trumpetting much more seriously; as a child, he had a run-in with famous jazz trumpeter Billy Cross (Miles Davis, in his only staring fictional role). Cross makes a deep impression on the young Dingo, who's lifes passion afterwards is to meet up with Cross in Paris. Despite financial hardship and a love-triangle treatening his marriage, Dingo takes a leap of faith and travels to Paris to meet his hero. The eventual meeting is not only a "milestone" for Dingo, its a type of redemption for Cross.

Although the acting is minimal, Davis is surprizingly convincing as not only a jazz trumpeter (duh), but also a man searching for meaning in his playing and a man discovering another lost soul like himself in Dingo. A slow-moving but nonetheless good film.

Strage but engaging.......2002-01-11

I first saw this movie on the movie channel Stars in about
1996. It's the kind of movie that makes you feel like you're
wandering in a hot, unforgiving desert, chasing after a mirage
that never quite comes into focus. It's dreamy quality is what
keeps me coming back. I would recommend this film to anyone who
daydreams or just needs a little magic in their lives. I loved it.

Sweet Miles.......2000-10-16

A small quiet film featuring the music of Miles Davis and starring Davis as, you guessed it a trumpeteer. The film is about a man, John "Dingo" Anderson (Colin Friels), who hears Bill Cross (Davis) and his jazz group as he's on lay over at an airstrip and comes to the realization that music is his future, much to the chagrin of others. His dream is to one day catch up with Bill in in Paris and play with him.

What really makes this movie though is the music. Davis does a superb job on the jazz soundtrack and if you see this movie you'll come to a mutual agreeance. It was what initially latched me to this movie, and kept me hooked throughout.

Primal canine blasts: Fine recurring melody; Miles = smiles.......1999-03-27

I listened to the soundtrack from Dingo for many years; today I watched the movie. I was tickled as the themes and audio bites from the soundtrack came together with the story line. Dig the primal canine blasts our hero puts out to the bush and then the audience. Check out the contents of the airplane. As far as Miles goes... I smiled a lot. He's got some great poetic pauses. Should you buy it??? Depthcharge!!
