Amazon.com essential video
Molly Ringwald established herself as the teen queen of the '80s in this fresh comedy. The movie is a day in the life of Samantha, whose 16th birthday is turning out to be anything but sweet. All the traumas of teendom come down on one long day, which sees Samantha surrounded by dithery relatives, mooning over a high school hunk, and pursued by a sawed-off Lothario. Sixteen Candles marked the directing debut of John Hughes, and its goofy energy displayed a promising talent with a great ear for high school lingo ... a promise neglected since Hughes became, after Home Alone, a one-man entertainment industry. There are some pretty crass moments (Why the stereotype of the foreign-exchange student from Asia?), but Ringwald's steady appeal smoothes over the rough spots. As the pubescent, self-styled lady-killer, Anthony Michael Hall turns in a hilarious portrait of a young swinger; he and Ringwald would reteam with Hughes for The Breakfast Club, another key teen picture of the decade. --Robert Horton

A flame from the 80's.......2007-07-03
If you enjoyed the Brat Pack in the 80's, you will LOVE this movie as much as I do =)
Favorite movie.......2007-05-27
We had lost our copy of this movie and were so happy to get a new one. It is a great movie with laughs and tears.
EXCELLENT 80'S TEEN MOVIE!.......2007-04-11
This is one of my wife's favorite 80's teen movies. I am a fan, but it isn't as high on my list as hers. The film is very funny and Hall is hilarious as the geek. The DVD transfer is great and a worthy purchase.
Sixteen Candles with Molly Ringwald.......2007-04-11
This DVD was a gift and the recipient is very pleased.
Amazon's service was, as is the norm, just great. : )
A Tremendously Enjoyable And Heartwarming Early 1980s' Classic........2007-03-05
Though it often goes under the radar due to the enormous popularity of the similarly themed follow-up "The Breakfast Club", "Sixteen Candles" is just as good as its more volatile counterpart, representing a far more innocent but just as enjoyable representation of those awakward years we all go through.
Molly Ringwald plays Samantha Baker, a small town teenager anxiously awaiting her sixteenth birthday. Much to her disappointment, the overly obsessive detail gone into her older sister's wedding has made her birthday an oblivious occasion to the rest of her family. To make maters more complicated, Samantha is already going through many pubescent emotions, including a crush on the one boy she can't get to, Jake Ryan (Mike Schoeffling), who's under the grip of a blonde bimbo that he just can't seem to break. Even worse, the biggest nerd in school (a scene stealing Anthony Michael Hall), is desparate to win Samantha's affections, despite her having no interest in him wahtsoever.
This leads up to a tocuhing, funny and adorable conclusion. "Sixteen Candles" is a film that will delight all film viewrs, and is a film many people going through the period of life represented in the film can relate to. I recommend to all fans of 1980s' teen flicks as well as film in general.

Sixteen Candles
The Breakfast Club
John Hughes's popular 1985 teen drama finds a diverse group of high school students--a jock (Emilio Estevez), a metalhead (Judd Nelson), a weirdo (Ally Sheedy), a princess (Molly Ringwald), and a nerd (Anthony Michael Hall)--sharing a Saturday in detention at their high school for one minor infraction or another. Over the course of a day, they talk through the social barriers that ordinarily keep them apart, and new alliances are born, though not without a lot of pain first. Hughes, who wrote and directed, is heavy on dialogue but he also thoughtfully refreshes the look of the film every few minutes with different settings and original viewpoints on action. The movie deals with such fundamentals as the human tendency toward bias and hurting the weak, and because the characters are caught somewhere between childhood and adulthood, it's easy to get emotionally involved in hope for their redemption. Preteen and teenage kids love this film, incidentally. --Tom Keogh
Weird Science
Yes, that is Bill Paxton as Ilan Mitchell-Smith's militaristic big brother. And that's Robert Downey Jr. as one of the in-crowd jerks who makes nerds Mitchell-Smith and Hall's lives miserable. Fortunately, this is a John Hughes comedy and our smart nerds create the perfect woman, Lisa (Kelly LeBrock), using a computer and voodoo. Lisa is a willing sex toy, has magical powers, and just wants to help the boys get even and meet nice babes. She even cleans up. The fantasy ebullience of Hughes is given full rein here and that's good and bad (mostly good). It's all aimed at a certain kind of hormone-addled, 16-year-old sensibility; but who doesn't have a little bit of that in them? --Keith Simanton

All the movies are great. My friends and I really enjoyed them. They are also fun to watch with my family.
BRAT PACK COLLECTION.......2007-02-08
Great collection, shipping was excellent and product received in perfect condition. I order from Amazon all of the time! They're great!
Re-living the '80's.......2007-01-18
This is a great set, but I think Weird Science should be replaced with a different Brat Pack movie
Love the movies and the cd hated the advertiements.......2007-01-17
I have to say this the bone head that decided that they would force the advertisements on us by making them impossible to skip cost this set a star.
The music cd kinda makes up for it which is a nice unadvertised touch loved the music. I am so glad that I brought this set after all this time these movies have not lost their charm. I would like to comment on a common complaint expressed by other reviewers the inclusion of weird science in this box set. I think it is appropriate but I think they should have called it the John Hughes collection. Since we all know the brat pack included Rob Lowe,Andrew McCarthy and Demi Moore. I look forward to purchasing the other set with Ferris Bueller,Pretty in Pink and Some Kind of Wonderful.
I will end this review with a thumbs up and a pop quiz
Q.What John Hughes heroine's mother appears in a John Hughes film ?
A.Mary Stuart Masterson (Watts Some Kind of Wonderful) her mother Carlin Glynn played Molly Ringwald's mother in Sixteen Candles.
the brat pack.......2007-01-12
it is the best collection i purchased because of the 3 movies and the music compact disc that comes included. thank you raul

Customer Reviews:
Great plot, story line...A must have for any parent of a teenager.......2007-01-14
This movie was exellent and I think any pre teen or teenager from ages 11 and up should have to watch this movie because you will learn a lot. Many parents don't know that their children are having sex at a young age and don't care to get involved before it is too late. Also some of the ones that are having sex lie to their parents and/or wont discuss it and this is a good way to get invloved with your child life without embarrasing them. This movie is a realization for me and I am only 22 years old but this movie will make you realize it's best to wait before having kids, because they come first and it would be selfish to have a child if you are not ready and to understand that the child comes first. This is what this movie is about, a girl having a child while struggling to stay in school and maintain good grades and the very doubt of ever being able to go to college and having the life that she always dreamed of. The plot of this movie kept me interested untill the very end and it was a very good movie. I would recommend this to teachers to play in school and parents to buy for there teenagers! I don't have kids but this was a TOTAL realization for me and I wished that I would have seen this movie sooner!! I saw this on Lifetime but I am buying it to show my kids one day because I feel that it is important. This movie really can change your teens life, it did mine!
review of Mom At Sixteen.......2006-10-24
I wondered if it was written by someone from the team behind My So-Called Life. I mean if it was it would have been written as an assignment for a paycheck, but the treatment of the material was much more detailed and less PSAish than I've ever seen before, especially for a made for tv movie. The dichotomy of the post-pregnancy teen's jaded attitude towards sex and the rest of the class' rabid enthusiasm for discussing it is very effective. The plight of the infertile woman is depicted well by introducing her as a teacher and a person first and then later revealing her situation rather than just presenting her as a one-dimensional representation of an affliction. The way this film lets the characters exist before and outside of the "issues" they respesent is what sets it apart.
Good movie for teens........2006-08-14
I bought this just for being a DVD. It really turned out that, Mom at Sixteen is really good for an eye opener for the Girls and Too Young to Be a Dad is really an Eye opener for the Boys. Of course I am not a Parent, but still good movies.
Mom at Sixteen/Too Young to Be a Dad.......2006-06-26
The movies where great and very educational!!!!! More Teens Should take this into consitoration I am 11 and I know more about sex and teen pregnancy then most teens do and if you have noticed the age of teen pregnancy has gotten even younger like 9 - 18!!! It is very sad to see for instance if you go into a middle school or high school you will see some pregnante girls or boys talking about how they got so and so pregnante last night or a week ago!!!! It's very sad I would hate to see our generation torn to peices because of this !!!
Your girl,
Jasmine
Mom at Sixteen.......2006-05-18
I Have not yet seen the DVD, but I watched it on TV once and I really liked it. I really want to get just this movie without the other movie. This movie really touched my heart. As soon as I started watching it and couldn't stop. It was one of the best movies I've ever seen!

From an MTV hater!.......2007-05-22
OMG this was such a stupid show MTV just gets worse this is also worse than laguna beach. Seriously why on earth would any one want to see this garbage of spoiled little veruca salts having their parents kissing their a**es over all these highly extravagant things on their 16th birthday partys this is just one of those shows and laguna beach that makes most teen girls look like spoiled selfish little brats who don't care weather thier parents live or die as long as they can still be very spoiled and still have everything they want which is what MTV promotes. Complete teenage garbage it must be destroyed forever and I give this a o stars as an MTV hater.
The show is Super! .......2007-04-25
From the Channel that brought you Laguna Beach, The Hills, Run's House and many more great other shows. This show is so funny, well basicly its about rich girls and boys who have way over the top birthday parties. And the party never goes to plan. Welcome to the life of being a rich 16 year old. This show is telling us that money can buy friends and a good party.

Fully recovering from the wretched flop Timeline, director Richard Donner brings seasoned skill to 16 Blocks, a satisfying thriller boosted by intelligent plotting and the stellar pairing of Bruce Willis and Mos Def in quirky, well-written roles. Making the most of minimal dialogue, Willis plays Jack Mosley, a boozy, disillusioned New York City detective who reluctantly accepts an assignment to transport squeaky-voiced chatterbox Eddie Bunker (Mos Def) to a grand jury hearing where he's scheduled to testify against a group of corrupt, drug-dealing cops. They've got two hours to travel 16 blocks, but the dirtiest cop (David Morse) is determined to kill Eddie before he can testify; what he doesn't know is that Jack senses something in Eddie's seemingly innocent, optimistic demeanor that he wants to protect. Working from a tight, twisting screenplay by Richard Wenk, Donner turns familiar material into an efficient potboiler that delivers tense urban action (like Donner's earlier Mel Gibson hit Conspiracy Theory) while leaving plenty of room for Willis and especially Mos Def (in a critically acclaimed performance) to develop their flawed yet admirable characters. 16 Blocks may be a standard-issue thriller in many respects, but as a showcase for its appealing cast, it quickly rises above its generic limitations.--Jeff Shannon

Pure adrenaline rush, definitely packs quite a punch..........2007-07-03
`16 Blocks' may seem like a filler type film, a generic cop film that's been done before and been done better, but when one sits down to watch this film, expecting nothing more than a time waster, they will soon realize it's more than just mindless entertainment generated for pure profit, it's a really good cop thriller with a beating heart and some wonderful performances to boot. It's breathlessly paced, action packed and thought provoking, and while the plot may be somewhat regurgitated it stands tall thanks to stand out performances by the cast, Bruce Willis once again proving that despite his lack of Oscar nomination he's still one of our greatest working actors. Director Richard Donner stages this film brilliantly, with twists and turns and unpredictable predicaments, and the scenes are shot with a gritty fluidity, nothing too choppy yet never too refined.
Bruce Willis plays Jack Mosley, an alcoholic cop who's pretty much given up on life. His wife has left him; his job bores him and his who attitude and demeanor has suffered because of it. He's plagued by guilt but is not willing to confront it. Then he's forced to. Mosley begrudgingly agrees to transport Eddie Bunker 16 blocks across town where he's going to testify against a group of corrupt cops, cops that Jack is close with, maybe even guilty alongside. Mosley and Bunker aren't far from the police station before these cops attack in an effort to kill Bunker, stopping him from testifying. Mosley decides to protect Eddie instead of turn him over to the slaughter and thus begins an exhilarating ride while they race to make it to the court house in time for Bunker to testify before time runs out.
Willis is effortlessly convincing as an overweight, down and out cop. I've always been a fan of his diversity, and while the cop role may not be a new one for Willis he gives us more than just a reflux performance but creates a totally new character in Jack Mosley and does so with acting bravado. Rapper Mos Def delivers a spot on performance as wise-cracking chatter box Eddie Bunker. Everything is original, from his stagger to his voice and he adds layers to his performance with each passing frame. Another standout performance is found in David Morse. I must say that I am becoming more and more smitten with this man. He's a brilliant actor, and delivers a solid, Oscar worthy performance just about every time. Here is no exception. He's fantastic here as Frank Nugent, the dirty cop heading the head hunt for Bunker. He's smart, witty and completely evil.
'16 Blocks' is exciting, entertaining and memorable, thanks to a tight script that avoids falling into predictability and avoids using the same tired clichés. It's a wonderfully painted canvas for some great acting and the directing deserves quite a few nods in its favor as well. I stand by the belief that the academy will soon honor Willis with a much deserved acting nomination for in almost everyone of his diverse roles, from ghost to superhero, cop to boxer he's delivered top notch performances investing all he has into what he's given. Sit back and enjoy the ride, it's one you won't regret.
Pure action and drama.......2007-05-11
My kind of movie. Not an Oscar award candidate film but entertaining. Lots of action, drama and decent performances.
Very good HD-DVD movie.......2007-05-09
I liked this movie, the picture and sound are amazing, but I don't like combo.
Fairly disappointing for me .......2007-05-06
I had heard this was a pretty good little action flick. Like others here, I did find the acting pretty good and the story, though full of cliches, moved along at a nice pace. What was my problem with the movie? It was filled with absolutely preposterous scenes---i.e., a building is SURROUNDED by cops and Bruce Willis and Mos Def find some kind of way out of there. This happened several times in the movie, each time more unbelievable than the last. I'm actually pretty good at suspending disbelief during movies but this one lost me about half way through. The ending was well-done, although this movie was front-loaded on action---the first half features numerous shootouts, and then all of a sudden, halfway through, the movie becomes more thoughtful and cerebral. I just couldn't buy this one in the end.
Don't miss this one........2007-05-04
OK I am a huge Bruce Willis fan. I thought he was a great actor and now I am convinced. Willis turns himself into a middle age stumbling, bumbing cop. One that is believable and yet still is able to illicit your empathy; he does this
by showing how a man who has given up on himself rises from the ashes of his own mistakes and realizes that his own dignity is worth saving. Willis must have that realization cemented within his own core to portray that character so well. So totally does Willis succeed that you are pulling for Mosley (Willis),and for me that is a great moment when I feel like jumping out my seat and applauding. Ok confession number two I am also a big Mos Def fan. I actually don't know who did a better job Mos or Willis. Luckily both characters are so different and play off each other so well that it is pure enjoyment. Mos captures the charm, the humour, and honesty of a convict so willing to be himself that Mosley inmediately bonds with their attempt for redemption.
Last but not least is David Morse. Morse plays the bad cop, He generally does an excellent job. Sometimes his portrayal borrows a little too much of
Christopher Walken.
New York was a great backdrop. How they filmed all the action within that busy City I would love to know.
One great exciting movie.

A House Doesn't Make A Home.......2007-04-01
In Ken Loach's stark but richly rewarding "Sweet Sixteen", we follow events leading up to the sixteenth birthday of the resilient but reckless Liam as he tries to prepare a life and a home in anticipation of his incarcerated but soon-to-be-released mother's return.
Liam is portrayed by the perfectly cast Martin Compston, whose emotive face can seem so youthfully vibrant yet at the same time so weathered and world-weary. And apt visage aside, this first-time actor here proves himself to be one of the great young performers emerging in the cinematic world of late - his pitch-perfect portrayal of Liam is right up there with recent starmaking roles turned in by the likes of Ryan Gosling and Joseph Gordon-Leavitt.
Liam is joined in this film by his best friend and literal partner-in-crime Pinball (who's certainly no wizard, although is perhaps so named because of the way he careeningly drives the "borrowed" vehicles in which he joyrides). Pinball is ably portrayed by William Ruane, another previously unknown local who is also quite a find. Together the two boys try to find ways to survive and thrive amidst an environment in which the odds are greatly stacked against them.
The film is actually shot in Greenock, just down the Clyde river from Glasgow, a town where almost all the jobs have moved elsewhere, leading to few "legitimate" ways to earn money. A place where once-lovely but now dilapidated tower blocks are inhabited in equal measure by junkies and families. As Loach himself states in the appropriately spare commentary track (where long silences abound), it's a location where the visually spectacular scenery "contrasts rather sadly with the quality of life of many of the people who live there."
In "Sweet Sixteen", we find the legendary director's usually strident political overtones to be toned down a tad, his muted message blending in nicely with the drab browns, greys and greens of the bleak and beautiful Glaswegian cityscape. The film shows us, subtly yet firmly, how the most promising and gifted attributes in souls young and old alike can sometimes be squelched and squandered by systemic and structural societal inequities. And though it can be depressing to take in at times, this film is ultimately breathtaking to behold, and the most remarkable thing about Compston's performance is that he portrays Liam so winningly that you actually root for him to be successful in even the most questionable of deeds. All of which makes for a highly recommended viewing experience.
Reality check for society.......2007-01-25
Think about this movie and how it applies to real life situations? An abusive family, mother in jail, the kids being in foster homes. All "Liam" wanted was a fresh start for his family once his mother got out of jail without her abusive boyfriend "stan". He had to do law breaking things to get the money to provide his mother with a place to live and as you can tell once she gets out she doesn't appreciate it. This movie is a wake up call to a lot of people out there that think these types of situations only happen in movies. At the end of the movie we see what lengths he goes to to try his best to get his mother back. I will just say the ending is very emotional and is very real for a lot of kids out there with a family like that.
Sweet But Very Bleak.......2006-09-11
Ken Loach's film ends on Liam's sixteenth birthday, and it is probably not much of a spoiler to say that aside from being around to make sixteen, Liam's life -- both ahead and behind -- is nowhere near "sweet." But he is, for almost every minute of the film as he tries to build a life for himself and his mother once she is released from prison. Problem is that every choice he makes toward reaching that simple but quixotic goal is bad, spiraling him deeper into crime and danger even as the trappings of the dream are attained. Young Faust in Scotland is what we have here and a Faust further shackled by an inability to recognize who's loyal to him.
Well-acted by a cast of mostly non-actors and thoroughly gritty, Sweet Sixteen captures a part of the world with little hope and few ways of escape. The moments of peace and happiness along the way, while real and not infrequent, are all trapped in that bleak reality. Sweet Sixteen gets that world unforgettably right. BTW, the DVD offers the option to watch with subtitles. Unless you are familiar with working class Scottish accents, you probably should do so.
Effective & Moving.......2006-05-14
This movie was spartan and bleak. It revolved around the life of a boy who loved his mother immensely and who would do anything just to bring the family back together once again. The mother was in jail for a crime that she didn't commit. The father was a small-time drug-dealer and she took the fall for him. The son hated the father for what he did to his mother. As he was brought up in a social estate housing, he was forced to grow up very quickly and street-smart too. He had a best friend that was also his partner in crime selling cheap cigarettes. Suddenly, he had a bright idea of getting his mother an after-prison gift and he concocted a business strategy of selling drugs, drugs he actually stole from his estranged father. As his ambition got wider, he started to tread on the toes of established drug-dealer. Subsequently, it spiralled out of control. In the end, we would come to understand the poignant meaning of sweet sixteen. The movie touched on the inability of running away from the vicious cycle, family violence and early parenting. There was a strong dynamics between the boy and his sister, Chantelle who willed herself to get an education for the sake of her young boy. A very strong movie that's handled brilliantly by Loach. No extras in the DVD but recommended viewing.
Ken Loach Does it Again!.......2005-07-07
This is a must see film. There is so much truth and honesty to the way Mr Loach presents his projects that you really FEEL so much while you are watching these people on the screen. The fact that he uses unknown and untested actors and provides the veiwer with such a rich and true experience is just mind boggeling. Martin Compston is amazing, I hope to see more of him in the future.

Sixteen Candles

It's Samantha Baker's Sweet Sixteen and no one in her family remembers the important occasion. John Hughes (Home Alone) shows how coming-of-age can be full of surprises in this warm-hearted teenage comedy.
