The most precise 80's/90's teen movie spoof! Very funny and the line-up of teen stars is incredible!

I got this movie because I wanted some 'mindless fun'. What I got instead was a great comedy. If you haven't watched any other 'teen movies', then some of the skits won't click but it is so well done that it is still enjoyable. Definitely worth the purchase price.

Wow.... this movie is seriously brilliant. And I'm seriously drunk right now.... but this movie is hellla funny. Points out all the flaws with stupid teen movies. Watch this if you're drunk. Otherwise... I don't know because I'm drunk.

4 out of 5 stars Talk about a "Feel Good Movie!".......2007-01-24

The opening scene with the vibrator was the best part of the entire movie. Watching dewy-eyed, bespectacled Chyler Leigh squirm and cross her eyes while trying unsuccesfully to control her stimulation while her entire family watches was priceless. The buck-naked foreign exchange student was good too.

4 out of 5 stars Funny as Hell!.......2006-12-31

This movie was so funny! Some characters were very stupid, but still funny! But if that guy's friend always dress asian, why does he make fun of them? Great to watch! So funny when you first see the part when the guy sings that the girl had a gun, and everybody ran thinking she had a gun and was caught by the cops and when one dude with the casts whispered at the girl's ear and for real told her nothing to make the other guy telling her. Watch this movie!

Even in the 21st century, very few film stars create and define their own genre--and certainly not in the complete way Bette Davis did. The Bette Davis Collection gives an exceptionally good survey of essential Bette, with four of the five films absolute knock-down classics from her long reign at Warner Bros. Davis's personality was so strong that she tended to overpower her directors, but William Wyler was one of the few to maintain his own distinctive style with her, and The Letter (1940) is a triumph for both of them. At a humid Malaysian plantation, Davis kills a man in the brilliant opening sequence, and the remainder is a darkly suggestive unraveling of the complicated explanation.

Dark Victory (1939) and Now, Voyager (1942) would be on anybody's list of most representative Davis pictures. In the former, she's a doomed heiress nobly losing her eyesight, a multiple-handkerchief situation that proved one of her biggest hits. Voyager allows Davis one of her favored techniques (appearing frumpy for at least part of her performance) as a mother-dominated spinster who comes out of her shell. Her match with Paul Henreid--and the music of Max Steiner--turns this into one luscious melodrama.

If Mr. Skeffington (1944) is not as celebrated as those films, it is nevertheless a characteristic Warners work-out. Davis wasn't shy about playing unsympathetic roles, and Fanny Skeffington--vain, selfish, married for practicality--is an exasperating tour de force. She gets good support from Claude Rains as the sensible, adoring husband. The Star (1952) is no classic, but its Pirandellian aspects will appeal to the actress's fans: Bette plays a washed-up Oscar-winning star desperate to get herself back in the public eye (think if it as a less witty postscript to All About Eve). There's some hint the main character is modeled more on Joan Crawford than Bette herself, in which case Davis must have loved playing it.

Extras are modest, with short featurettes giving background on three of the discs, and director Vincent Sherman providing commentary for Mr. Skeffington. But the films themselves, and their neurotically intense star, are quite capable of standing alone. --Robert Horton

Description

The Bette Davis Collection includes 3 new-to-DVD classics, featuring Davis in multiple Emmy-nominated performances as a captivating adulteress, a manipulative beauty, and a former Oscar-winning actress recovering from the end of her career.

5 out of 5 stars Changing my tune.......2007-05-05

As my tagline indicates I am mad about musicals, and I vowed I would never add dramas to my collection because with musicals, you can play the numbers over and over again, like a record, and enjoy. You can never tire of songs, dance and spectacle. But dramas? Once seen, to be put away for years, otherwise you become too familiar with the plot and the initial impact weakens. I revised my thinking with the release of the Bette Davis Collections because I realised that - in keeping with my love of musicals - every Bette Davis movie is a symphony. A symphony of emotions that equals major musical works - grand opera, concertos, and the subtlety of chamber ensembles. I also have a personal connection with "Dark Victory" and "Now Voyager". They were the work of screenwriter Casey Robinson, top Warner Brothers writer of the 30's and 40's, who retired with his Australian wife, Joan, to Sydney and became a close friend. Having heard all the stories, I asked him if Bette was difficult. "She never changed a line," he told me, "she respected a good script." Enough said. I worry a bit about them shoving "The Star" into this collection - it's a lesser vehicle when they could have included "The Old Maid" or "The Sisters"...but that's the deal, huh? It seems 'collections' are an opportunity to offload at least one minor low-budget movie. However, it's still interesting given Bette's typically bravura performance, and it's wonderful that her formidable contribution to cinema is preserved so magnificently. Go see what I think about Collection Two.

4 out of 5 stars The Bette Davis Collection.......2007-02-23

Absolultely must have for any fan. It is great. I love "The Letter".

Better is the best and fabulous in this box set. We've never had a better actress.

5 out of 5 stars Bette Davis's Best Movies All In One Simple Box.......2006-11-04

People have often said that Bette Davis is the most versitile and simply the best actress to have come out of Hollywood, and until Meryl Streep came along I would agree with that statement, Bette Davis give remarkable performances in all five of these films, In The Letter, Bette Davis gives one of her finest performances a moody cheating housewife who murders her lover and then claims it was self defence, in Now Voyage she plays the shy and intraverted daughter of a controlling mother, when the mother dies she has trouble coming out of her shell and when she does she finds love, but none of it is that simple, a very good film, extremely good dialogue, all the films in this box set a brilliant and I would recommend these films to anyone that wants to watch a film with real actors that have real talent.

Fanny Skeffington, an incorrigible society flirt of the WWI era, was one of the meatiest roles and most exasperating women Bette Davis ever played. Flighty Fanny loves the attention of her male suitors, but marries the steadfast Jewish financier Job Skeffington (Claude Rains) for security; long after their wedding day, she still enjoys receiving gentlemen callers. Time catches up with Fanny, of course, and the bills are due by the time World War II rolls around.

Mr. Skeffington is a vintage Warner Bros. workout for Davis, who never shied away from playing unsympathetic or physically unappealing roles. (Her main worry here was looking pretty enough in the early reels to justify Fanny's reputation.) Her theatrical performance and Rains's impeccable work carry the handsomely dressed story through its many melodramatic shifts. The dialogue by Julius and Philip Epstein (who were doing Casablanca around this time) has the sprung rhythm of screwball comedy, although director Vincent Sherman and the cast don't always seem to have noticed this. There's also the growing issue of anti-Semitism--a subject rare in Hollywood prior to this--especially as it concerns Fanny and Job's daughter. But mostly the film has Bette Davis, who strides headfirst into the gray areas (her indifferent treatment of her daughter is especially unappetizing), a fearless attitude that looks like the polar opposite of Fanny Skeffington's vanity. --Robert Horton

Description

Whose face ravaged, grotesque is in the mirror? Surely it?s not that of Fanny Skeffington, the prettiest woman in New York. Fanny always used her beauty to manipulate her way through life. She?s encouraged dozens of suitors, even after her marriage. But now diphtheria has robbed her of her only attribute. And without her looks, she?s lost. Bette Davis earned her eighth Best Actress Oscar nomination portraying Fanny

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-06-26

Loved this one. Just classic Bette Davis. I would watch her in any movie. A simple review I know, but what else can be said about Bette Davis?? She's the best!

5 out of 5 stars Not the typical Boy Meets Girl Movie.......2007-05-13

This is a love story. Bette Davis plays a shallow, spoiled rich girl with no money Mr. Skeffington loves her character, why, I have no idea. She marries him for his money. They divorce after a hefty settlement. Only after many years does she realize what a fine man she has lost. The ending is expected, but touchingly done. It's a classic film. Enjoy it. I certainly did.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Skeffington.......2007-05-13

What has Bette Davis done that you dont love??? Another excellent film.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Bette.......2007-03-04

I'm traditiionally not a Bette Davis fan but this film is so entertaining! Bette plays a selfish, self centered and arrogant woman who is also vain and conceited- very few admirable qualities. After contracting a very serious illness that dramatically alters her very beautiful appearance and the return of Mr. Skeffington from W.W. 11 Fanny Skeffington dramatically changes- for the better. She finally understands the true meaning of love and life.

5 out of 5 stars Long but worth it.......2006-12-25

I really liked this movie. I went into it knowing that Bette Davis wasn't the most beautiful woman in the world. If Warner Brothers wanted that, maybe they could have borrowed Rita Hayworth or Betty Grable from Columbia or Fox. Acting is about performance and Davis wanted the audience to imagine her as a beautiful, desirable woman. It is really long, but try to force yourself to stay with it, it has its rewards. It works in a feminist context because it asks, what do we want from women? Are women only supposed to care about their looks or are they supposed to have an inner life? Also, the accompanying feature says that Davis wanted the make up to make her look disfigured, and that it took bravery for a leading actress to appear ugly on the screen.

Not Another Teen Movie PSP UMD Movie MODEL- 11924 VENDOR- UMD MOVIE FEATURES- Not Another Teen Mov PSP Movie Super-jock Jake Wyler makes a bet with his buddies that he can turn the school frump into a prom queen. But by the time they get to the dance, this over-the-top, outrageous comedy hysterically pays tribute to all of the classic teen movies and moments in film history. Former MTV executive Joel Gallen makes his feature directorial debut with this broad spoof of the popular teen comedy genre, lampooning dozens of movies including American Pie (1999), American Beauty (1999), Bring It On (2000), Clueless (1995), She is All That (1999), Road Trip (2000), Cant Hardly Wait (1998), 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), Never Been Kissed (1999), and even the teen films of an earlier era such as The Breakfast Club (1985). At the aptly titled "John Hughes High School," aspiring artist Janey Briggs (Chyler Leigh) is an outcast because of her plain, bespectacled looks and paint-splattered overalls. Football hero Jake Wyler (Chris Evans) makes a bet that he can transform Janey into a gorgeous prom queen, a wager he may come to regret as he discovers Janeys true inner beauty. As their relationship blossoms, several other characters are limned, including a Nasty Cheerleader (Jaime Pressly), a Token Black Guy (Deon Richmond), a Stupid Fat Guy (Ron Lester), an Obsessed Best Friend (Eric Jungmann), an Undercover Reporter (Beverly Polcyn), the Cruelest Girl in School (Mia Kirshner), a Cocky Blonde Guy (Eric Christian Olsen), and several others. 4 out of 5 stars Surprised me.......2007-03-25

I got this movie because I wanted some 'mindless fun'. What I got instead was a great comedy. If you haven't watched any other 'teen movies', then some of the skits won't click but it is so well done that it is still enjoyable. Definitely worth the purchase price.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant brilliant brilliant brilliant... but not 5 star material.......2007-02-18

Wow.... this movie is seriously brilliant.

4 out of 5 stars Sweet, romantic movie.......2006-06-26

With so much on dvd and cable now I'm catching up with some old movies. This flick could be considered a chick flick. The leads do a credible job but just didn't have that magic that makes movies like this work. The plot is of course almost ridiculous, but you have to ask yourself if you find that you are rooting for Sciorra's and Dillon's characters to get together. If so, then maybe the movie did it's job. Personally I found Dillon's characters to be superficial. His only goal was to invest in a bowling alley. Sciorra has more depth but then her character is involved with her married professor. Parker makes the most out of her role as Dillon's girlfriend who realizes that he still loves his ex-wife. Still the movie carried the romantic notion that 2 people in love will find their way back to each other. Not stellar, but if you're in the mood this may fill the bill.

3 out of 5 stars She Let Mr. Wonderfull Get Away.......2005-12-26

Although i enjoyed most of this movie, not even minding Matt Dillion's hard-to-swallow alimony dilemma. William Hurt was never a serious contender for Annabella's next true love, but when Vincent D'Onofrio got up onstage and sang "I Say A Little Prayer" for those few magic monments with Annabella, well, any idiot woman would have fell in love with him. Sorry, but it takes a real man to get up onstage in front of your co-workers and sing off key! The chemistry between these two in the short minutes they shared in the movie far surpassed all the time spent with the Gus/Matt. The ending was a real letdown.

If you like romantic comedies, you will think Mr. Wonderful is cute. its not the best, but the acting was pretty good, although the Supporting Actors and Actresses was even better than the main characters. the plot wasnt really anything special but it was good enough. i recomend it for a one time viewing

    4 out of 5 stars Very cute!!!.......2004-07-10

This is a sweet and charming film; only the ending disappointed. The entire film and premise was so different from other romantic comedies, and the leads and supporting cast are fantastic, but the typical overly sugarcoated ending ruined it. I expected better considering the rest of the film. Overall though, this one is recommended over recent Hollywood romantic comedies. It definitely made me smile.

It's not surprising that Mr. Jealousy didn't do well in theaters. The main character is obsessive and a liar, and by the end there's no guarantee that he's made any certain progress--which is part of what makes Mr. Jealousy such a sharp, insightful movie. The plot is entertaining to begin with: Lester (Eric Stoltz), a blocked writer, becomes obsessed with one of his girlfriend Ramona's former boyfriends, Dashiell (Chris Eigeman), who's recently published an enormously successful book and become a celebrity author. By chance, Lester discovers that Dashiell is taking group therapy; Lester joins the group and pretends to be his friend Vince (Carlos Jacott). When Vince learns about this, he insists that Lester tell him everything that goes on so that he can undergo therapy by proxy. The lies compound until Lester's relationship with Ramona (Annabella Sciorra) hangs by a thread. The writing is clever, yet never at the expense of the reality of the characters. Lester's jealousy is portrayed with almost excruciating details that make it both genuine and funny. The women in the film are not as developed as the men, but the performances are strong throughout. Fans of writer-director Noah Baumbach's first film, Kicking and Screaming, will not be disappointed. Maybe in the more intimate setting of video Mr. Jealousy will find the audience it deserves. --Bret Fetzer

    4 out of 5 stars A not-quite-conventional romantic comedy.......2007-02-25

"Mr. Jealousy" is a romantic-comedy made by writer/director Noah Baumbach between two significantly more successful films - "Kicking and Screaming" and "The Squid and the Whale." If it represents a misstep or a continuation of a sophomore jinx (started with the other film he made between K & S and S & W, something called "Highball"), it still has lots to recommend it.

Set in Manhattan, the film explores the lives of several characters as they navigate the hurdles of romantic relationships while struggling to reach greater emotional maturity. The eponymous character, played by Eric Stoltz (also the film's producer) is the story's focus as he gives free reign to his jealousy, reacting to a history of perceived and actual betrayals, and along the way goes to amusingly great lengths to unearth the secrets of his new lover's heart. His behaviour is unsurprising within the context of the film but a bit of a deviation from the usual terrain of the romantic-comedy genre.

Compared to the more successful films made by Baumbach, which I mentioned in the opening paragraph, "Mr. Jealousy" is neither as loose nor as satisfying because it seems more locked in by the conventions of its genre. The ending in particular is weak as the story gets resolved in an entirely predictable manner. The film also suffers from performances which are merely competent rather than inspired (as Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney are, for example, in "The Squid and the Whale"). Despite these criticisms, it's a film that is worth seeing because of the wit and accuracy with which it looks at the destructive effects of jealousy. You probably won't laugh out loud watching it but might smile in recognition. It's a film that should not just be of interest for fans of Baumbach's other work but also anybody who wants to see a romantic comedy with a twist.

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent and provacotive.......2007-01-14

Mr Jealousy is a film that isn't for the mainstream. Maybe because it is very well written and the acting is earthy and sharp. Not for the masses; the dialog is very intelligent and the story is sincere yet laced with humor. If you're looking for that feel of an independent film that would make a European film enthusiast smile, this is a good one. If you like the Last Days of Disco or Kicking and Screaming or Metropolitan, you'll like Mr Jealousy as well.

4 out of 5 stars Sharp, witty, right on target.......2006-11-16

Filmmaker Noah Baumbach nails the thing with jealousy and obsession dead on in this really sharp comedy. What makes this so much fun is the obviously high level of intelligence on display throughout the entire film. The movie hit home pretty hard; I recently met a beautiful woman I totally wigged out over and thanks to my obsessive behavior, she dropped me--not like a hot potato, but instead a volcanic one. (I hung my head for a couple of weeks after that).

Sigh. Lester, the obsessive guy in this film--played by Eric Stoltz--is so caught up in his own need to know he calls his girlfriend three times on one of the nights she says she wants to be alone, then jogs over to her house sometime after midnight. (Nothing like a wild imagination to get the better of you...sigh again). His girlfriend Ramona (Annabella Sciorra, in a perfect piece of casting) is beautiful but also pretty blithe about things and in fact, on the night in question, Lester may have had reason to think something was up...

Complicating matters is one of Ramona's ex-boyfriends, Dashiell (another well-cast role--Chris Eigemann, who does pompous and arrogant 30 something year old better than anyone in the known universe). Dash is a writer (surprise!) and has already published a book of short stories--and writer is a 'thing' Lester aspires to, although now he's a substitute teacher, and not a very good one at that.

Dash and Lester clash in a group therapy session, and how Lester got to the session is all part of Lester's obsession. The therapist, played by director Peter Bogdanovich in a surprise piece of casting, interestingly reflects Ramona's blitheness but of course applied to the field of psychotherapy rather than personal relationships. Lester's friend Vince and Vince's fiancee Lucretia also are on hand as a kind of snappy Greek chorus to both Lester and Ramona.

The main thing is that Baumbach really knows how to write very smart witty dialogue. He's a master at this, and that's what makes Mr. Jealousy a lot of fun to watch. It would be hard to find another 90s American comedy as sharp as this one--except, of course, Baumbach's OTHER 90s comedy, Kicking and Screaming. Interestingly enough, Eigemann (the Dashiell character) is a stock actor in Whit Stillman's films (Metropolitan, Barcelona) and there is some similarity between Stillman and Baumbach. But for my money, Baumbach is the man to beat.

Highly recommended--especially if you like sharp pungent comedy (with some real roaance as well).

    4 out of 5 stars Uran Comedy.......2006-11-12

After watching Noah Baumbach's film Kicking & Screaming, I was inspired to search out his forgotten comedy Mr. Jealousy starring the irrepressible Eric Stoltz and stunning Annabella Sciorra (I really enjoyed her turn on The Sopranos). Aside from Stoltz, there are some other holdovers from Kicking & Screaming including Chris Eigeman (who inexplicably seems to have only appeared in the films of Baumbach and Whit Stilman) and Carlos Jacott. It is one of those sophisticated, witty, urbane comedies (ala Woody Allen) where everyone seems so intelligent and with it, doing interesting things in New York. Stoltz is an aspiring writer who meets Sciorra, an Art History doctoral candidate and as his character has shown in the past has become obsessed with her past. In that sense it shares the same basic premise of Kevin Smith's Chasing Amy, where the past life of one's lover becomes an obsession. In this case drives Stoltz to stalk and follow her ex-boyfriend, and successful writer, Dashiell Frank into therapy. I found the fact that they were so open about past lovers at the beginning of the relationship as a bit too shall we say-"European"? However, the comedic highpoint is where Stoltz chastises Sciorra for going to bed with him too early in their relationship, to which she asks if he's jealous of himself. The music was done by Luna front man Dean Wareham (who also has a cameo), and one of my favorite tracks by Luna, "Chinatown", appears in the film.

2 out of 5 stars Human Nature Misunderstood........2005-07-17

Noah Baumbach hit paydirt back in 1995 with Kicking and Screaming, but in Mr. Jealousy, which he also directed and wrote, he does not offer his audience anywhere near the same complexity of character or plot. He also makes some glaring errors in regards to human nature. Eric Stoltz plays Lester who is supposed to be a man plagued by obsession and jealousy. However, Stoltz as always, is cool and engaging which means that he was a poor choice for the role. His demeanor is not in keeping with someone who is a jealous neurotic as he presents as being relaxed and anxiety free.

Regardless of personality impressions, we witness early on that Lester has partaken in some strange adventures over the course of his life's romantic relationships. Eventually, he enacts a most bizarre stunt involving an ex-boyfriend and group therapy during the film's climax. The audience is supposed to laugh at Lester because our society views jealousy as being a pathological trait, yet this is just another example of the way that human nature is misunderstood.

Yes, the O.J. Simpson brand of jealousy is pathological and anti-social; however, sexual jealousy in itself is quite adaptive and useful in the lives men. Were we not sexually jealous, our days would be spent raising other men's children and laboring to support women who shame and cuckold us. Furthermore, I would argue that a man who experiences no jealousy in regards to his mate/wife/girlfriend/whatever, is a man who is not in love.

Baumach completely mishandles his main character. In the opening sequence, he reveals that Lester was scarred by infidelity in his youth, yet his reaction to his girlfriend cheating on him is most civilized by any standard. Nearly all men would find such an event as traumatic as Lester did. Indeed, his present choice in girlfriends, Ramona, is a scandalous tramp, and his jealous feelings in regards to her would be universally shared. When one meets such a woman, the best thing to do is to break up with them because they will be an unending source of misery for whoever is dumb enough to become vested in their welfare. Not only is Ramona not "marriage material", she's not even "girlfriend material." She's a walking case of syphilis. Most calamitous for the film's message, is that Lester is correct to be so worried about her because she proves his worst fears true. If anything, the lesson we learn is that Lester is not jealous enough. Paradoxically, once the unthinkable happens, his reaction is not that of an obsessive and haunted man at all. He responds like a kind and friendly metrosexual. Instead of screaming at her, he is respectful and apologetic. That he would even speak to her in the closing scene at all is nothing short of astounding. Lester is everything that our post-feminist society prays for in its fabricated housecat men. His is a life to be abhorred. The movie ends up delivering a flawed contradictory message regarding the behaviors of men.

One can't begin to describe ANGELS, a lensed in New York-oddity that is probably the most bizarre thing Harry Novak ever released. God is a dapper black man who needs to recruit angels into his depleting Heaven. As such, he intentionally sends out nun hit-ladies to run over people in an Art Deco-styled Bentley. Throw in two macho gangster types, a young Vince Schiavelli, a Robert Mapplethorpe-type photographer who likes to photograph dead things, a mime, a hysterical yenta and you get -- I don't know! You tell me! Shot in 1975, this type of counter-cultural nonsense had long since left neighborhood theaters. GETTING INTO HEAVEN is the disc's "square-up" reel, where we get Uschi Digart, and lots of her, to make up for the rather "chaste" quality of ANGELS. You'll want to get this disc for all the retro bonuses, trailers for hippie-flavored art and exploitation movies that nobody has ever heard of before!
