4 out of 5 stars Arguably the best camp version of "The Most Dangerous Game".......2005-03-21

"Bloodlust!" is a 1961 film from director Ralph Brooke, who is telling his own twisted version of Richard Connell's short story "The Most Dangerous Game." The popular story of a big game hunter hunting men was first film in 1932 with Joel McRae and Fay Wray being hunted by Leslie Banks, and before Brooke got around to his version was remade as "A Game of Death" in 1945, again as "The Most Dangerous Game" but as a 7-minute short in 1953, and as "Run for the Sun" in 1956 with Richard Widmark and Trevor Howard. In the post-"Bloodlust!" era we have had "Woman Hunt" in 1975, "Slave Girls From Beyond Infinity" in 1987, "Deadly Prey" in 1988, and "Lethal Woman" in 1990, as suddenly the story take a decided turn from violence to sex. Suddenly, "Bloodlust!" looks pretty good in comparison, especially if you are into campy remakes.

The story begins with a pair of couples out for a charter boat ride (Oh, no: this film anticipates "Gilligan's Island!"). The captain spots an island he has never seen before and promptly passes out. So his passengers decide to go visit the island where Johnny Randall (Robert Reed), falls into a trap. Pete Garwood (Eugene Persson), Betty Scott (June Kenney), and Jeanne Perry (Joan Lora) get Johnny out of the trap just in time to be confronted by Dr. Albert Balleau (Wilton Graff) and his gun bearers. He invites them back to his home, where stuffed animals and trophy heads are the major item of decor. He engages his visitors in the sort of polite conversation where everything has a double meaning and his guests start to have a clue. Eventually the truth is revealed: Dr. Balleau likes to hunt human beings and has a special room where he displays his trophies captured forever as they were at the moment of death.

Graff plays the part like he was Orson Welles pretending to be Vincent Price. If you like your crazy men to be totally calm, cool, and collected, then this is your guy, although the approach really wears thin. Reed is clearly the only competent actor in the bunch and I can see why being in this movie did not hurt his career as he went on to "The Brady Bunch" and then tried to live the role down in things like "Rich Man, Poor Man." The grizzly tableaus are a pretty good touch to the general camp, and there is a scene where one of the doctor's henchmen is getting things ready for the newest tableau where the idea will turn your stomach even if the visuals do not. The common denominator between the two features on this disc is that the women in these horror films really know how to scream.

Although "Bloodlust!" received the "MST3K" treatment in Season 6 (which is available with the short "Uncle Jim's Dairy Farm" on VHS), it is a solid B-movie providing a few chills amidst the camp. You can also see it as part of a double bill with "Atom Age Vampire" thanks to the wacky folks at Killer Creature Double-Feature. So you can go with "Bloodlust!" by itself, or you can track down versions with the added goodies.

3 out of 5 stars Run, Mike Brady! Run!.......2004-05-31

Robert "Mr. Brady" Reed and three of his friends decide to go ashore on an uncharted island after their pleasure boat's skipper gets drunk and passes out. Once there, they are greeted by an eccentric hunter (Wilton Graff) who takes them to his jungle mansion. Our four heroes are unaware of their host's evil intentions! It seems that he was a sniper in the army who lost his mind. Now, he enjoys hunting human prey, killing them, stripping off their skins in an acid bath, and making life-sized trophies for his cavernous dungeon. Robert Reed and company must find a way to stay alive against this madman and his cronies. A re-make of THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME, BL is no classic, but it's not all that bad either. Worth watching just to see Mike Brady running through the jungle! ...

4 out of 5 stars Franco does The Most Dangerous Game, etc........2004-10-08

This is an almost great Franco movie. I love the theme song and can sit and listen to it repeat itself on the menu screen over and over. It is also used for Amber Newman's nightclub act scene right at the beginning of the movie. I think that because of the music and lighting, etc. the nightclub scene is even better than the one Soledad Miranda does in Vampiros Lesbos. In general, it is a very good sicko movie, but it has three main flaws. First, there is a just plain unnecessary and frankly disgusting female urination scene. Second, Amber Newman is a very beautiful woman as she struts on high heels or combs her hair, but she should never talk or smile. When she does she seems like a little girl about ten years old. Third, Franco's wife Lina Romay gets naked and she was in pretty bad shape. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate her nude work in other movies, but here she just ruins the nude scenes and I think she could have simply kept her clothes on and played the same part, almost. The movie goes along slowly for a while and then picks up quite a bit at the end. The ending was pretty good. Franco is one of those moviemakers who seems to re-use many of the same ideas over and over again from movie to movie and this is no exception. I don't know why Amber's eyes look so strange on the cover picture. So, if you like Franco movies I think that you'll like this one. On the other hand, if you don't know what I'm talking about when I say that, you'd probably better stay clear.

1 out of 5 stars Sickening and depraved.......2003-02-15

I think I'm "one and done" with supposedly legendary director Jess Franco. I watched this movie because of its "Most Dangerous Game"-inspired ending, and I don't want anyone else to go into this film with as little knowledge as I had about what you will see. I knew there was "debauchery" in the movie, but this goes well past debauchery into the realm of true sickness. Everything seems OK at first. Paula is a young actress or performer of some sort who auditions for some type of less than virtuous job and soon finds herself on her way to a private island where she will "entertain" a number of lecherous rich folks. At the house, they are greeted (much more than merely greeted, actually) by a strapping young woman (whom I suspect was once a man) who does not speak simply because she doesn't want to. Okay. The first sign of depravity comes when this woman furnishes a disgustingly personal ingredient for the evening meal. You'll want to prepare yourself for this (or better yet, avoid it entirely by never watching this movie); I can tell you it is no fun to come up on this scene unawares. Later, young Paula is rather viciously abused. Finally, after several incredibly long and drawn-out scenes of no importance whatsoever, I made it up to the human prey segment and hoped for a little something positive to take away from this movie. There was nothing at all positive about it. To top things off, having already included just about every depravity known to man in the film, they introduce yet another hideous practice at the very end. As I said, I knew this movie was a little extreme, but had I known just how extreme it actually was (and in what way it was extreme) I would never have watched it.

Aside from the horrible story, the acting is just awful. Amber Newman does a good job in her unfortunate role as Paula, but the rest succeed only in being weird, distasteful, and depraved. Lina Romay, who is obviously fairly old and extremely unappealing, was by far the worst of the bunch, and her dialogue was completely unintelligible. She sounds like a drunken Charo trying to talk with a handful of walnuts in her mouth-I have no idea what she said at any point in the film. I am a big fan of extreme horror, so I am unaccustomed to being sickened by a movie. Tender Flesh sickened me, and I will avoid any and all Jess Franco movies like the plague from now on.

1 out of 5 stars I was NOT impressed........2001-06-07

Jess Franco's got this great reputation for making unusual, interesting, and wonderful films, but I've yet to see one I liked! Quite frankly, they're just bad.

Amber Newman is very cute as the girl .... And Monique Parent certainly has that sensual, seductive quality about her as the woman in charge of the hunt. But the casting in "Tender Flesh" is as good as it gets. The storyline as played out on the screen is neither interesting nor even erotic. There's one scene, for example, where pretty little Amber is whipped and then massaged by a beautiful, slightly older woman. Sounds both kinky and sexy, doesn't it? But it's NOT! Somehow even a should-have-been sizzling scene like that comes across as flat in this film...I don't know how he did it, buy Jess Franco ruined what should have been a great flick!

4 out of 5 stars Tender Flesh.......2001-05-29

The wild and wonderful world of Jess Franco may not be to everyone's tastes, but those even vaguely familiar with his work should check out this film at the earliest opportunity. Here, the gorgeous Amber Newman plays a young actress who must satisfy the dark desires of her potential employers in order to progress. Newman is certainly put through the hoop by her new admirers before the action moves to a remote island where Franco's twisted take on "The Most Dangerous Game" really kicks in.

As with many Franco films, "Tender Flesh" contains a few scenes that outstay their welcome but, overall, this is terrific stuff... Of course, Franco's excellent cast contribute immeasurably, blending 'old friends' (Lina Romay, Analia Ivars and Alain Petit) with new Franco babes Newman and Monique Parent to winning effect. As far as the latter two are concerned, it's great to see two American actresses successfully converted to Franco's European scheme of things. Indeed, Amber and Monique fit in so well, it's easy to get carried away with the notion that "Tender Flesh" could slot into the director's extremely productive 1980's output; it certainly wouldn't look out of place.

Extras on the disc include a stills gallery, a nice Amber video...and a 51 minute making-of documentary that is a model of it's kind and alone is worth absolutely every cent of the asking price. For a low budget production, picture quality is above average, though the sound occasionally lets the side down (Ms Romay's dialogue being unintelligible on more than one occasion). Apart from that, "Tender Flesh" is a real treat!

2 out of 5 stars A Confusing Mishmash.......2006-10-12

I like horror movies. I like old horror movies. I thought that a movie that uses clips from old horror movies edited with modern footage to make a new film sounded like a good idea. Unfortunately, if Terror in Tropics is any indication, it is a very bad idea.

I know that many old horror movies have plots that make almost no sense. This one goes one better (or maybe worse) and has a plot that makes absolutely no sense. There are mad scientists, murders, gorillas, deformed henchmen, dinosaurs, and spunky reporters. A guy dies and leaves all his money to twelve strangers, but they have to go to his private island to claim it. Meanwhile, some thieves have stolen the map that shows the true location of Skull Island (from King Kong). Everybody gets on an ocean liner. Then they find a survivor from the expedition to Skull Island. Then Several people are murdered. Then they all arrive on Fog Island for the reading of the will. Several other people are murdered. The reporters are locked in a closet. Then somehow everything turns out alright.

Besides a nonsensical plot, the acting sucks. I've seen high school plays with better acting. And, the old and new scenes don't mesh well. They go through the trouble to make the new film look like old film, but it doesn't look quite like actual old film, and the modern sound doesn't have the same quality as the old sound.

I picked this one up for about $4. It was too expensive at that price. Really, the only reason I gave this thing as good a rating as I did is because I liked the one extra: Gregory Mank's discussion of "Poverty Row" films.

1 out of 5 stars The real terror is that they're actually selling this thing on here........2006-09-25

Nowadays, anyone with a camera and some computer skills can make their own movie. In a way that's great- there's a lot of talent out there that otherwise would have no outlet. Then there's this... "movie". It's a grade ZZZ flick that says it owes it's existence to the movie "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid", where Steve Martin got to interact with some of Hollywood's departed actors. Any similarity is fleeting at best. The acting, what there is of it, looks like those cheesy plays one used to see in elementary school. Two people stand out- one is a Barry Murphy (whom I actually found in IMDB) who plays the editor of the newspaper "The Daily Register", and also later, I think, the ship's purser, wearing a Maynard G. Krebs goatee that looks like it was greasepainted on. The other was a Charles Witig, who plays a shyster lawyer. They probably stand out because both of their scenes were brief, so they were actually able to learn their lines. A lot is made of Mark Renfield's Lugosi imitation, but I think most people can imitate his Hungarian inflection rather easily. And shouldn't it be a warning that a lot of the "praise" put on this film is regarding someone's Hungarian Ghoulash of an accent? It also said the movie is "spine tingling"- well, um, no, it isn't. It's a dull, horridly written, badly acted, poorly edited, waste of a DVD that might be enjoyable to the cast ("LOOK! We're in a MOVIE!"), but I doubt anyone else would like it. Or could even sit all the way through it without their thumb on the FF button. After that, it might make a nice coaster to put a cold beer on. Hopefully there won't be any sequels. If there are, at least give the newspaper editor a nude love scene (since he can act) with his female reporter to spice it up.

3 out of 5 stars A Night of Sin, a Season of Fear.......2005-09-29

Neglected rich wife Cathy (Olivia Hussey), stranded on an island overnight, gets involved with a widowed boat owner (Anthony John Denison), and tells him of her frustrations with her husband, and that "like Los Angeles, I'm still waiting for the big one." He seduces her with wine and romantic music, and along with giving in to temptation, Cathy gets much more than she bargained for. A one-night stand turns into an obsessive nightmare, as she tries to keep her secret from her husband (Don Murray), while getting advice from their attorney (Edward Asner). Though the script is awkward at times and the plot predictable, there is a certain amount of suspense in this thriller that is a "mature chick flick," as all the main actors are in the over forty and then some category.

Olivia Hussey will be always remembered as Franco Zeffirelli's Juliet in his 1968 "Romeo and Juliet," and Mary in his 1977 "Jesus of Nazareth." Hussey looks fragile and pale, but at 50 still beautiful with her aquiline profile, and her petite figure (though costumed in some ill-fitting blouses in this film). She does the best she can with her rather thankless part as the stalking victim, and Don Murray, a long way from starring with Marilyn Monroe in "Bus Stop" (1958), is good as the wronged husband. Edward Asner however stumbles a bit, and one gets the impression he got hold of the script an hour before his scenes took place. Written and directed by William Riead, it's shot on location in the Los Angeles area, and has a score by Sean Murray that is very effective, and helps give this film some dramatic tension. This is a low budget film that entertains if your expectations are not high, and good for rainy Saturday afternoon TV fare. Total running time is 86 minutes.

4 out of 5 stars Arguably the best camp version of "The Most Dangerous Game",.......2005-04-01
