Some good exercises, some not so good.......2007-05-22
I am a beginning stability ball user and bought this DVD to show me some ways to use the ball. I REALLY like the moves for the lower body. I could feel it immediately and know I'll be sore tomorrow. The arm workout was okay but nothing too challenging. For whatever reason the ab workout hurt my lower back too much so I skipped that part. I admit I haven't finished the whole DVD but may just stick to the lower body moves. Just for those it's worth the price.

I got a good workout with this, but the instructor wasn't good at cueing, especially in the warmup. After doing it a few times though, it doesn't matter and you can go right along with her.

A good workout, and a pleasant instructor. It's easy, though---perhaps too easy?---and after a couple of months of doing this workout at least once or twice a week, I'm finding there to be too much time between each exercise as she explains each one.
That said, it was a great introduction to working with the gym ball, and I really like catching her little imperfections. Definitely a thumbs-up if you're in the market for a beginning gym ball workout.

After a week I really felt myself becoming stronger. After 2 weeks, I could notice a difference in the tone of my stomach. Can't wait to see what it's like 2 and 6 months from now.

I'm in my early 30's, go to the gym 4 times a week and am in pretty good shape. At the gym I do the elliptical as well as some of the fitness (weight) equipment. I decided it would be nice to to add some variation to my routine as well as have a workout I could do from home.
I researched for a while and decided on the ball and the video ball workout for Dummies. The result? I'm VERY happy. At first I didn't think it was going to be worth the money or time- I'm used to working up quite a sweat at the gym and thought this workout might be "too easy" for me. Well... not so. It hurt to walk for 3 days after I did the video the first time. This tells me I was working SOMETHING that I usually didn't. It's true, it targets muscles that aren't typically "worked out" on traditional exercises or machines.
All in all, I really like this video. The instructor is a bit annoying but I've come across worse. It goes slowly (which is the point to get an efficient workout) and really explains how to position yourself correctly (which I find to be a downfall of a lot of the others). I'd say go for it!

Sweat inducing, challenging, great workout........2007-06-05
This workout is a combination of weights, plyometrics, and cardio. FYI for those with knee issues there are a LOT of lunges, dips and squats in this workout. It is set up in sections with cardio intervals, then weights and plyometrics. I really enjoy this workout, Allison's attitude and cueing are great. I love that she is breathing hard and pouring sweat, because that is exactly what I'm doing! I must say I agree with the reviewer who pointed out that the camera work is sometimes unhelpful, showing only the modifier when transitioning into a new move. I find that to be the biggest flaw in an otherwise great workout.
Good workout but annoying camera work.......2007-05-29
I did this DVD for the first time today. Although I felt like I got a good workout and it was a nice change from the other 20 Firms that I've done, the camera work was just too amateur. At times, it focused on the girl with the easy moves so you could not follow along with the regular instructors. Also, there were times you could not see the leg work because it focused only on the upper half of the instructors. Whoever shot this video needs to learn from the original Firm camera people, who really knew how to shoot a workout video. However, I liked the plyometrics and speed moves because I felt I was going at different paces throughout the video and that is supposed to give you results faster. Worth a try.
AWESOME!!!.......2007-05-23
Alison Davis has quickly become my new favorite FIRM instructor thanks to her 2 new workouts. She has new, inventive moves and a very fun style that actually make you enjoy the torture! This is the only workout I have EVER been bummed about when it is over! She incorporates easy dance steps, kick boxing, and new "power moves" to target muscles as never before! I have always used The FIRM for my workout needs, but this workout accompanied with her Ultimate Fat Burning Workout has really made me get past a stubborn plateau. I am SO looking forward to MANY more workouts to come! Simply AWESOME!!!!!!!
Hard- But GOOD Hard!.......2007-05-21
I first watched the video to get an idea, and I immediatly put it aside, as I thought "that looks like way too much!" However, the other day I thought I would try it... well I did I couldn't finish it, but I will! The point is MAXIMUM Calorie burn is right! It is broken up into segments so you have moments to cool down and you don't fatigue your muscles at one time.... so I like it a lot and I can't wait to do it again and finish! If you want a good cardio video with basic moves that are not super dancy this is for you!

this is an intense workout. that first cardio segment is pretty tough. the weights are not that hard but your body definitely feels different after this video!

Can't really Complain. .......2007-06-11
I have to admit if you put all you've got into it you will get a fine workout and drop some sweat while you're at it. I only did 26 minutes of it yesterday because I got weak and tired so I decided to finish up this morning. The only thing I'm disappointed about was the actual mat workout where you relax and breath kinda like the 'yoga' portion of the video, which lasted only ten minutes. I was annoyed. I wanted to do more of that. So it's mostly cardio and carrying weights throughout and then she finished with a ten minute mat workout. No too bad at all. If I was to keep this up consistently (OPERATIVE WORD BEING 'CONSISTENTLY') I think I'll be alright. Thanks!
Excellent!.......2007-05-31
Ellen Barrett is an excellent instructor, her cueing is always on and attitude is friendly & encouraging. Instead of saying "keep those abs pulled in" she says "it takes a lot of thought to keep those abdominals pulled in" as a gentle reminder, as opposed to barking out an order. The workout begins with a warm up followed by a not-so-cardio section which is fairly pointless. Then weights are added and I start to huff and puff and sweat a bit. All of the standing cardio is interspersed with toning and balance-challenging exercises which is a nice way to prevent me from getting bored or feeling overworked. This DVD is very heavy on the plies, and also I think there are a LOT of lunges. After the standing cardio, there is a very short mat work section, and an even shorter cool down. If I had this to remake I would do exactly as Beth says and substitute the not-so-cardio portion near the beginning for more matwork. This DVD has not left my regular rotation since I purchased it. I see great results from using it, and I highly recommend it.

The good stuff.......2007-04-28
This workout is great. I like to alternate it with "Fat Burning Pilates" also by Ellen Barrett. This workout is more challenging than the other, together they will whip your butt into shape in no time! This DVD involves lots of squats and some ballet inspired moves, I am not sure how much pilates is involved, but you must still maintain "pilates posture" throughout the workout as Ellen reminds you to do. Whether it is true pilates or not, its definately worth the money, the time flies by and afterwards you really feel like you've done a good job. I am now addicted to working out and in the best shape of my life (5 months after having a baby) and a big part of that is thanks to Ellen and the Crunch series of workouts. I highly recommend them. In fact you should just type in "Ellen Barrett" into the Amazon search engine and buy every DVD you find. Seriously.
Great for all fitness types.......2007-04-18
I know that not everyone is going to agree on fitness styles, but Crunch-Burn and Firm Pilates is great for all workout levels because it's not hard on the joints. I've done other workouts and was always jumping up and down and bending, and this one doesn't have you doing that as intensely. If I had to have one critcism with Crunch tapes, it's that the camera roves too much and you don't get a chance to really look at the moves a lot, especially with the one who's supposed to be doing the low impact version.
Other than that, do buy this tape because you'll get a good workout with less strain and pain! Ellen Barrett is also a good instructor and not annoying as with some other instructors telling you to "feel the burn!"

By far the best adaptation of a John Grisham bestseller, this smart, fast-paced 1993 film--directed by Sydney Pollack (Out of Africa)--offers up the dilemma of a young lawyer whose life is turned upside down when he takes a job at a Southern law firm owned by the mob. Mitch McDeere (Tom Cruise), having just graduated from Harvard Law, is besieged with offers but takes a job, too good to be true, with a small Memphis firm. He and his wife, Abby (Jeanne Tripplehorn), are sucked in by the seemingly close-knit, collegial nature of the firm's partners and the expensive perks that come with the job. His mentor, Avery (Gene Hackman), teaches him the ropes, but Mitch and Abby begin to sense there's something wrong with this idyllic life. When a couple of associates turn up dead, Mitch begins to investigate the history of the firm; and when the FBI asks him to spy on the firm for them, Mitch realizes his life will never be the same and that, if discovered, he, his wife, and his long-lost brother will be in mortal danger. Mitch must use all his talents as a lawyer to outsmart the firm, the FBI, and the mob in order to reclaim control over his life. A very entertaining thriller that engages the audience at a breakneck pace while not taking itself too seriously. Mediocre .......2007-06-25
This is a mediocre film mainly of interest as a stepping stone in Cruise's career. While the screenplay is not bad, Pollack never manages to convince me about evilness of "The Firm" - a law firm serving mafiosi from Chicago. The Firm characters never come alive either as lawyers or as bad guys; their sinister-edness has a cartoonish character rather an an aura of real menace.
By far the best part here was played by Hackman. Great acting - subtle, forceful and nuanced.
Cruise's acting shows the beginnings of the (rather predictable) stereotype that we get to expect afterwards: the (fake) sensitive macho, the signature (fast) run with rigid and puffed-out torso and, especially, the signature inability to feel. When an actor has to simulate feeling rather than actually acting THROUGH feeling, the viewer subconsciously gets funnies in the stomach, like when watching a conman trying to persuade others of his honesty. Cruise emotes well but can't express affection or even sexual interest - obviously, he never got lessons in Stanislavsky or Strassberg. I should,however, mention the notable and important exception of Magnolia, where Cruise's expression of hate feels chillingly real.
The actors, screenplay and the director never seem to have achieved a rapport required to convince the viewer - and themselves! - that they have a genuine quality product. Pollack is not the Top Gun kind of guy and he will never be. Oh, well.

Great Movie ! If You like mystery drama's or if you like Tom Cruise get this movie. He actually PROVES he CAN actually ACT and is really pretty good at it ! Just watching a man fight for his freedom to LIVE and keep his Law Degree and his Wife makes it more than a chic flick. I enjoyed the movie and personally own it ... so i would definately recommend it. U won't know what hit you ! Law and Justice, many grey lines ! A Great rainy evening at home movie.
A Little Disappointed.......2007-02-22
I like John Grisham, but this movie did not follow the book very well and an actor other than Tom Cruise would have been better.
Legal Thriller.......2007-02-21
Almost gave this 4 stars, leaning that way only because of the ending. Seemed slightly improbable, the sudden brilliant legal maneuver the main character makes at the end to evict himself and his wife out of the gangster-fed dillema his life has been thrown into. Then having thought about his brilliance at the Harvard Law School, it reduced the improbability and thus five stars.
This movie does grab you, and pulls you in so that you're always wondering what is coming next. Cruise does good job as well as Hackman.
Have not read the book yet, maybe someday. Still enjoyed the view and if the book is better, it would make a good read as well.
What was Sidney Pollack doing in directing this?.......2007-01-31
The first sign that this movie was going to be well below the book's quality level was the jazzy piano music from the first step. The early scene was a lot weaker than the book's. It continued from there. This did not need to be an R-rated movie, but some Hollywood idiot thought better.
There had been several actresses who received both best actress and best supporting actress (different roles) the same year, and the norm was typified by Jessica Lange in '82, when she lost the best actress but won the best supporting actress. The next actress in that position (Sigourney Weaver, for "Gorillas In The Mist" and "Working Girl" failed to win either. Holly Hunter was nominated in '93 for "The Piano" as best actress, which she won, and this movie for best supporting actress, which I did not believe she was as worthy of.
I like Wilford Brumley, but I cannot think of anything in this movie that is worth recommending to you.

Not too Bad.......2007-06-24
I have several Firm workouts, and purchased this because I was a bit bored with the ones I have (I use them regularly). It didn't require any new equipment, and on days I don't think I can climb that step one more time, this fills the bill nicely. If you already are familiar with The Firm, you'll follow along with a fair amount of ease the first time.
I did think it would be a bit more of a workout, but I still work up a sweat. That may be relative though, depending on your level of fitness.
Her cueing is OK, and she layers it nicely. Like most of the videos sometimes the camera work could be better, it's pretty but when you are transitioning from one move to another & trying to learn the move, it is not the time for the camera to move or pan anywhere.
It's a a nice change of pace, and a good addition to your workout collection.
Wonderful.......2007-06-09
I am in love with this tape. It is very easy to follow thanks to Alison Davis. This is a great tape to use on days where it is hard to get motivatied. It is short, but fast paced, and I break out in a great sweat every time. This is a good one for beginners and intermediates and all you need are light weights. I have to admit, sometimes after finishing this tape I want to restart it, and have. I recently had another baby, and this tape along with some other firm tapes are definitely working once again!
Disappointing for The Firm.......2007-05-27
I am a fan of The Firm. They promised me visible results after ten workouts for a The Firm - 5 Days Abs / Upper Body / Tough Tape 2 / Standing Legs (Boxset) I have and, amazingly, I had real results I could feel in 8 (with some other workouts interspersed), so I owe them a lot. This DVD, while it doesn't have the cheesey 80s hair and workout outfits as the others I have, also doesn't have the production values. The quality of the tape isn't as good. It's about the only workout dvd I have that doesn't have any special features, chapters, audio options or anything. The only option on the main menu is "play."
The editor clearly wasn't paying any attention to the audio when he/she edited this dvd. There are many times when the instructor mentions an option that she is demonstrating and they choose to cut to a person in the back, so in some instances, you never see the alternative she is showing.
She instructs you to follow Sue Mi for beginner modifications too many times during the workout (do we really need to be reminded every five minutes? My Prevention Fitness Systems: 3-2-1 Workout, which I also like (and is similar to this workout, but better) chooses to mention the person demonstrating the beginner modification once or twice verbally and then occasionally flashes it as text on the screen, which I find much less irritating).
So, this is a decent workout, really, but disappointing when I expected a lot more from The Firm.

Like I said about her BootCamp workout, Alison Davis has become my new favorite FIRM instructor. Her new, inventive moves are invigorating and a nice change from some of the same ol', same ol'! I love the FIRM and have used them for all my workout needs for quite a while, but these 2 workouts are my favorite! She incorporates dance moves, kick boxing, and "power moves" to target your muscles even more. She has been a breath of fresh air with her fun style, got me past a stubborn plateau, and I look forward to MANY more workouts from her. I will buy every single one!!!
Very effective.......2007-05-18
I like this DVD. I did excercise with other DVDs such as Kathy smith Step aerobic and Alison Boot Camp at least four times a week. I lost 40 lbs now. My thighs are shrink as well as my buttock. Consistency is the key.

Excellent arm workout!.......2007-05-22
I love The Firm series and was equally impressed with this DVD. It's upbeat, has fun moves, and is a wonderful upper body workout. If you've never done Firm workouts before then slowly go through the DVD, rewinding as necessary, until you know the moves. After that it's easy and you'll appreciate all the different moves because you'll be so busy paying attention to what comes next, you don't have time to realize that you're tired! I've been doing this workout on the older blue Firm box and it works fine, though I'm planning to upgrade to the transfirmer soon. Highly recommended!
This will get your arms in shape!.......2007-05-17
I've been doing The Firm for a good month now and did JF Arms this morning. Wow!! I really like this one! It takes a few viewings to get some of the steps down, but once you're comfortable doing it, it's second nature.
It is a great workout targeting shoulders, biceps, triceps and back muscles! I really like the instructor's personality and the music isn't annoying. There is some cardio incorporated so that you can burn some calories and let those new muscles show! :)
They use the TransFirmer in this workout, but I think you could do it without one. You would just have to watch it to see how you would make up for not having one. However, if you are looking for a workout tool I would highly recommend the TransFirmer. Just the incline alone is worth the $$!
I'm a new convert to The Firm and I'm so excited to have found it! I'm already seeing improvement in my body, strength and endurance! If you are looking for a seriously good workout incorporating aerobics and weights, this is a great choice!!
Exercising DVD.......2007-05-12
So far I've enjoyed the exercise video. It has helped me get back into exercising and has shown a small improvement to date, but I haven't had it that long. I feel energized after doing the exercises and enjoy the time I spend doing them. I'm looking forward to seeing the results from using it and plan on purchasing other The Firm exercise videos.

This is a wonderful upper body workout with short bursts of cardio intermixed so your heart rate stays up the entire time - I know, I wore my heart rate monitor when I first got this to make sure. I consider myself an advanced exerciser and everytiime I do this tape I am sweating! If you go heavy on your weights (which you should be doing anyway) you'll get a wonderful workout! Combine it with Jiggle Free Buns for a total body workout that's intense but fun!
Awesome arm workout.......2006-11-10
The Firm is my favorite workout series. This is an excellent upper body workout with some fun cardio thrown in.

I love SELF's series of workout DVDs. This is really a great abs workout & my abs are burning before I even get to do the yoga abs! I highly recommend this workout.
Self-Firm Flat Abs Fast.......2006-08-29
Well the title seems to fit the dvd "fast" but in a different aspect, as far as time goes. I thought this was very boring and slow, but it was over in no time at all. It probably would be great for someone just beginning and has very little or no time at all to exercise and it doesn't work up a sweat. It was very very easy to do and I'm a beginner myself.
My Abs Hurt!!!.......2006-06-28
This is an excellent workout for the abs! I do this 3 times a week and I already see a difference. They have several different "styles" of ab related exercise. They have a 10 minute pilates ab workout, a 10 minute yoga workout, they have ones that you can use the "ball", etc. There is also a 10 minute cardio workout at the end. Very good DVD!

Disappointing.......2007-06-19
Jiggle Free arms, you would think, that it will be thorough with your arms? there is more cardio-work out here which wasn't my purpose for purchasing this work-out. . also, i missed the fine print that you need the steps. you tend to drag time by transitioning different positions of the step. I was not looking for a step exercise. i shredded this dvd.
Instructor bored the hell out of me.

Another Challenging AB Workout from The Firm .......2007-05-24
I am a Firm Believer. I've been working out with The Firm for several years. When the Jiggle Free Series came out, I was interested in finding out what it had to offer. I have the Fanny Lifter (love it) and didn't want to purchase the new Transfirmer. I bought Jiggle Free Abs here on Amazon.com for pretty cheap price. It's an awesome abs workout. Allie is one of The Firm's best instructors. She continuously instruct you on proper form and breathing techniques. The moves are challenging but do-a-ble. I wasn't able to complete the full workout the first couple of times. You don't need the Transfirmer, if you have a stool or the Fanny Lifter, you'll do just fine. You only use it a few times in the beginning and that's it. Here's what you get: A 7 min. warm-up, a 16 min. abs routine, and a brief cool-down at the end and that's it. Stick with it and you'll see results really fast. I love the work out. I also plan on buying Jiggle Free Arms, I heard it's an awesome workout as well. Good luck.
Overall it's ok........2007-03-27
This is not a traditional floor ab routine with just crunches; I liked how there was a lot of variety of different moves. However, I was dissapointed that many of the non-Floor exercises just didn't target the abs much, so my abs didn't feel sore during or after the workout. Also, I'm concerned that many of the movements are high risk for injury.
The instructor is motivating, does the motions with good form, and gives good cueing about what motion to do next. However, she doesn't give enough reminders about posture and keeping your abs tucked in. The music, set, and video quality is good.
It's annoying that this DVD doesn't allow you to forward to specific chapters/sections (e.g. skip the Intro/Welcome chatter & Warmup segment)

Light standing cardio workout moves. (which begninners may find mildly challenging, but will be easy for advanced).
There are lots of fast lunges, knee lifts, and body twists that might not be suitable for beginners because it's hard on the knees and back.
Except for a few exercises, most of the motions don't isolate/target the abs specifically.
~10min TRANSFIRMER(on a step/stool):
Back leg lifts alternating with too many hamstring stretches
Lean sideways while sitting on step
Oblique twists with alternate leg
Reverse crunches while sitting on the step
~10min FLOOR:

It is nice because it focuses only on abs and doesn't need any other tools etc. I take it with me when I travel around and it is easy to follow. It does work if you really stick with it, I do it three times a week and it is quite effective.

Allie's so cute when she says "tummy." This is a very nice ab workout. Pair it with Jiggle Free Arms and you're set for the day! Oh, and for more challenge, do the planks directly on the floor and continue to work even while she's stretching. (for the first portion after the warm-up)

I love the entire Jiggle Free collection, particularly this video. You will mostly use five lb. weights until the last section where you will use eight. And it is the last section that makes this video worthwhile. For a really challenging workout, do all three Jiggle-Frees in one day. I try to do this once a week.
highly recommended.......2007-03-20
The bouts of cardio in between toning exercises helps keep your heart rate up but also keeps the next day soreness down. It took me two or three times to get the routine but then it was all good from there. Pam is an okay instructor, kind of bland. I prefer Firm instructors Allie or Stephanie Huckabee. This will still really whip your butt into shape - they're not kidding with the "Visible results in 10 workouts!"

I have been using the Firm vidoes for about 6 months now and see a big difference. They are really working well to help smooth the back of my legs! I have gotten so much use from their videos thus far, so I thought I would get this to see if it could specifically target my problem area to help it along. It is a great workout. Hard to believe it is only 30 minutes. I pair this with the jiggle free arms to get a great kick butt work out!
Great challenge for the lower body........2007-01-21
Pam Cauthen Merriweather is an excellent Firm leader. This is a short (35 minute) lower body workout that is a good challenge for the intermediate to advanced Firm user. Additionally, the use of the compound movement on the incline and the varied type leg presses definitely increases your heart rate. The only issue on this workout is the segment on the step; it increases your heart rate; however, there is an interval between doing the other leg and this creates a weakness in the other leg portion of the workout. It is recommended that you fast foward so that both legs are done one after the other and go back to the exercise in the middle of the two. In combination with Jiggle Free Arms, it is a nice, solid over 60 minute workout.
Excellent Workout!.......2006-11-01
This workout is very excellent for 30 minutes. I love "Teedums" review below. it is sufficiently explanatory. I thought I would put my 2 cents in as a Certified Fitness Trainer. I really approve this workout. with the aerobic and toning intervals, the entire thigh is targeted with uniquely tough moves for awesome results. The music is also worth mentioning- very upbeat. A great workout all around.
I only must disagree with Teedums about Pam. Sometimes I found her cueing confusing and somewhat lacking what I was looking for. However, it was not so awful the workout was spoiled. It is one of my favorite lower body workouts with Lower Body Sculpt 1. Miss Kitka [...]
