Produced by World Wrestling Entertainment mogul Vince McMahon, See No Evil a standard-issue death-fest designed for maximum gross-out appeal, and in that sense it delivers the goods with crushed heads, multiple eye-gougings, throat-rippings and other grisly fates that gore fans will want to discover for themselves. If your idea of a good time is watching a mangy dog urinate into the vacant eye socket of a corpse, this is just the movie for you! In an attempt to create a new horror icon like Freddy Krueger or Jason Voorhees, former porno director Gregory Dark and less-than-stellar screenwriter Dan Madigan have dreamed up a routine plot that's hardly original, but deviously addictive to anyone who digs this kind of stuff: Eight troubled and not-very-bright teens, fresh out of a detention center, are given a second chance when they're taken to the decrepit, filthy Blackwell Hotel and told to clean the place up so it can be turned into a homeless shelter. What they don't know is that the hotel hides a secret, axe-wielding resident named Jacob Goodnight (played by WWE superstar Glen "Kane" Jacobs) who's got a knack for plucking the eyeballs from his hapless and ill-fated victims. He's basically an evil kid in the hulking body of a wrestler (call it type-casting, if you will), and See No Evil is more sick than scary as Jacob does his handiwork, which includes the rather hilarious and grimly ironic dispatch of an animal rights activist, to name just one item in the movie's smorgasbord of splatter. At a brisk 85 minutes, the movie's over before you can work up any genuine terror. Still, a sequel seems likely (even if it's straight-to-video), and devoted horror fans will want to check it out.--Jeff Shannon

Description

Seven feet tall. Four hundred pounds. A rusty steel plate screwed into his skull and razor-sharp fingernails that pluck out his victims' eyes. Reclusive psychopath Jacob Goodnight is holed up in the long-abandoned and rotting Blackwell Hotel, alone with his nightmares until eight petty criminals show up for community service duty along with the cop who put a bullet in Jacob's head four years ago. When one of their own is kidnapped by the killer and her fate uncertain, the remaining lawbreakers must fight this indestructible force of nature who has a violent score to settle.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Fun and Fast Paced Slasher Flick!.......2007-06-24

OK! So again because of all the bad reviews I had read I found myself putting a film off untill I could find it for cheap. Well I did find it for extra cheap but as I figured I should have went on my first instinct, wich was to get this the day it came out. Yes "SEE NO EVIL" does have it's flaws but it's not even close to as bad as some of the harsh reviewers made it out to be. I was expecting a mess of a story and a pathetic attempt at a slasher film by one of the richest meatheads that capitalism has to offer in(Vince McMahon) but what I got was a very fun & bloody slasher flick with some creative kills & chills. The actors were a bit annoying but you can't have it all now can ya! I myself would have done the ending(or should I say the pre-ending) differently 'cause let's just face it...the very final scene was great! I did enjoy this film alot, so much so that I hope they get creative eventually and find a way to bring Jacob Goodnight back for a couple of sequels. It is worthy of a franchise if they do things right and bring back director Gregory Dark who in my opinion did a good job with this one. Kane did do better than I expected and as long as his lines stay next to none I do see some potential here for another horror icon.

4 out of 5 stars It Came Out 20 Years Too Late.......2007-06-22

Just like how I said about the Marine, this movie came around 2 decades too late because if this was made around the 1980's back when horror movies were only Friday The 13th, Nightware On Elm Street, and Child's Play then it would stand out better. The movie was sterotypical "monster" going after kids in a confined area. The part of the movie that kept it interesting that alot of horror movies don't do today was that you didn't know who was going to survive since the main hero was one of the first ones killed and you really didn't know who all was going to survive. It was a low budget movie & concidering that, I thought it was a good "old school" slasher type movie that made people like Jason & Freddy famous. It just came out 20 years too late to get more credit than it does now. I recommend for those to like the old school type of horror movies from the 1980's.

3 out of 5 stars I dont even like him as a wrestler.......2007-06-17

Kane does make a good movie villian. The movie started off strong, then the rap music kind of killed it for me. A typical horror movie with a few cool deaths. If you like horror, i'd check it out. Its better then 20 of the dime a dozen cheaply made horror flicks you seen in video stores today.

3 out of 5 stars Time to Kill.......2007-05-28

If you thinking this film has a plot, then you are dead wrong. If you only want to see a whole bunch of people get killed, you picked the right movie. I am not going to commment on the acting or the plot or anything else that does not exist in this movie, I picked it up for 5 dollars from Blockbuster and that is what it is worth. Great title to fill in your spaces on your DVD rack, great killing scenes and that is what matters, enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars At least its not another crappy remake.......2007-05-14

This movie is okay, Violent, Gruesome. Perfect for a slasher movie. Sort of like an 80s horror movie meets the concept of Psycho. For the same reason, i liked the movie Dead Silence, its original, not a remake. This isnt the best of movies. Rating slightly above average, I would still sugget this for any horror/slasher film lover. Its new and fresh in a world of The Hitcher remakes...

Dark Harvest (Paul Moore, 2004)

Ho hum. Another group of young-and-beautifuls, another secluded house, another evil supernatural entity. Well, at least the young-and-beautifuls are young and, well, beautiful. Still, there's not a shred of originality to be found here. More likely to inspire yawns than screams, except in those places where the Y-and-Bs go swimming (sans bathing suits, naturally). At least that stirs some, erm, emotion. * ½

1 out of 5 stars aka Pure Crapfest.......2006-11-26

It will scare the crop out of you...

...And unless you ate this particular DVD, putting whatever comes out into your player will be more entertaining than this film.

To give credit where credit is due, the plot of this movie isn't too shabby. In the Great Depression, a hard-pressed farmer named Elijah Baker made a pact with the Devil: he would sacrifice the migrant farmhands that drifted from ranch to ranch in exchange for a bountiful harvest, stringing their corpses up on crosses and dressing them up as scarecrows. As depicted by a series of D-grade TV actors in the opening sequence, local law enforcement in "West Virgina" confront Baker when they suspect something, and in the ensuing shootout the farmer is eliminated.

Now, in the present day, Sean (Don Digiulio), a direct descendant of Baker, inherits the farm when his biological father--who has never met--dies. He doesn't want to even bother taking a look at the property, but his fiancé convinces him to make it a trip along with several friends. The young kids head out to the isolated farm and prepare to spend a week. Little do they know that on the coming "blood moon", the farmhands killed by Baker will take revenge on any of Baker's blood-relatives.

If this movie had a decent budget, a decent production crew, and a decent cast, this plot could have given way to a C-horror movie. Instead, what we are left with is hollow, poorly directed, terribly acted piece of trash so vile that it's offensive.

The acting is hands-down terrible. While the supporting cast is OK (how can you mess up saying typical "teen" one-liners?), the brunt of the script necessarily falls upon the shoulders of Don, whose only positive attribute is an ability to put emotion into saying the F word. Unfortunately, his borderline-mentally challenged mannerisms while swearing tend to ruin their effect. But, the best part of all...Don gets a haircut in the middle of the film. No joke. One minute, he's running from the scarecrows, bangs swinging in his face; the next, he's running from the same scarecrow sporting a more aerodynamic hairdo. Ah, but maybe the shooting last a year or so, and Don was left with no choice but to trim his hair? Maybe, except that it was filmed within three weeks. Never has the film world seen an actor so devoted to his craft.

The piss-poor acting could have been tolerable if, by some strange circumstance, the scarecrow monsters had been believable (i.e., they looked anything like they do on the cover). Instead, they are hopelessly crappy looking morons that stumble around and grunt and roar in rage as if they've seen this film. But wait, their eyes...they flash! Please. These are without a doubt the worst monsters to ever grace the silver screen; being direct-to-video, at least it wasn't a theater one (note: after seeing Dark Harvest 2, these creatures become only the second worst monsters of all time).

So, what will it be? Buy? Rent? Urinate on? I'd recommend the third, but that usually would necessitate either of the first two options, so I'm just going to go with AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

3 out of 5 stars You Reap What You Sow.............2006-03-03

For a low budget movie, I did not find this movie as awful as others have. If you have had the misfortune as I have of seeing Dark Harvest 2, you will Really appreciate this movie!! Dark Harvest 2, which I also reviewed is one of the sorriest movies I've ever seen and has nothing to do with this movie. OK horror flick, especially if you like scarecrow movies. To sum it up, a young man inherits a old farm and brings along some friends with him to see if the farmhouse is in good enough condition to be sold. What they do not know is that years ago, a farmer killed his wife and hung her as a scarecrow. Naturally, we see the scarecrow come to life. Taking place deep in the isolated mountains, Dark Harvest has some good/cool scenes. I myself think the scarecrow is rather cool! I'd recommend renting this movie. I think anyone would say.... I've seen much worse!!

3 out of 5 stars Bizarre Exploitation from the 30's.......2000-05-15

This double-feature DVD features 2 early 1930's exploitation films from Dwain Esper. Although maybe tame by today's standards, just try to imagine seeing people shoot up heroin in a movie back in the 30's! It's all very high camp now, of course, and if you like antique sleaze, this may be your thing. Esper was definitely no Kubrick, but he has his own strange and absurd style...inserting shots that have no point, suddenly cutting away to show animals fighting each other, superimposing stock footage, etc. Could he be the precursor to Ed Wood? Anyway, some highlights of the 2 films include a real shot of a cesarian birth of a baby, a snake eating another snake, a cat's eyeball poked out (and then eaten by the maniac), a couple of real sideshow freaks, some brief nudity as a psycho carries off a woman to ravish her, and of course lots of over-the-top acting. Both movies tried to get around the censoring codes of the time by pretending to have a message (narcotics are bad), but the movies are strictly exploitative. The prints used for this DVD are scratchy and have some jumps here and there, but considering the age and that no major studio was behind these films, this may be the best materials available. Also on the DVD is the trailer for "Maniac", some letters from the censor at the time, an excerpt from a silent italian film "Maciste in Hell" that footage was superimposed in "Maniac", and audio commentary by an author-expert on Esper and such films. A worthy purchase if you like stuff like "Reefer Madness", etc., but don't expect any scalpings in "Maniac" ---it's actually a loose re-telling of "The Black Cat".

4 out of 5 stars It's Dark, It's Quiet And You're All Alone Or Are You... .......2006-06-07

I found this review helpful before buying this movie:
This film is genuine in its attempt to re-introduce modern audiences to the style of 80s slasher film, right down to the visual style. There is a certain degree of subjectiveness in the camera style, with not many closeups, mostly wide shots, as if spying on the action taking place, it lets the drama unfold before us and does not distract with all the cutting of camera shots.

Plot is simple and familiar, as it is a basis for allot of slasher films - but you know what they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Murders cause a camp to be closed for decades then bunch of horny counsellors gets together and struggle to get it in shape for re-opening, while the person who caused it to get shuttered in first place, returns to ensure it stays so.

There is not an abundance of nudity but there is glimpses of it, teasing audience, and there is some cool deaths. Certainly a must-see.
