Customer Reviews:
brings back memories of the old days.......2007-06-09
I have enjoyed this immensely along with my family, really brings back the old days when I was young watching with my parents. Great to watch especially when there isn't anything else on TV, over the Halloween holiday or anytime. They just don't make-um like they used to!
DVD delivered promptly.......2007-05-12
Thanks for the quick delivery. Also, the dvd was in exc. condition. no problems with it.
5 star stories(most of the time anyway), but 1 star transfers= 2 stars.......2007-05-09
In my quest for all things loved as a child, I was thrilled to find this set of episodes of one of my Sunday morning shows that I loved. At 5 in the morning on Sundays this show would run two episodes and then an hour of the Three Stooges would come on, so every Sunday at 5:00 a.m. I was plunged into the world of the supernatural for one hour and then given an hour of laughs before everyone got up and ready for Church. The stories were all "documented" as true(at least that is what they told us) and had the goose-bump factor well in place. Most were very good and all featured some well known faces( Charles Bronson, Robert Blake, even William Shatner) and the air of believeability about them.
The transfers are another matter, they never looked that great back then , but little if any care has been given to clean these up and the constant hum can be madding. I have ordered some of the other sets and hope they are better, but still I did enjoy the stories, but beware!
5 STARS FOR "ONE STEP BEYOND" - 2 STARS FOR THE DVD QUALITY.......2007-04-25
In my opinion:
The stories are just excellent, and John Newland insisted that they could not be "made up" - there had to be a thread of evidence somewhere. For that, the background music, and the stories, I give the Series 5 Stars.
However, the quality of these DVDs is shameful. In truth, I can live with the video quality (which varies and reaches a 3.5 Star level on some stories), but the soundtrack is deplorable. Specifically, there is a 60 Hz "Humming sound" in ALMOST EVERY story that drives me nuts. I have a top DVD player, and I tried everything; restricting the bandwidth of the audio; connecting various equalizers on the output; different external amps; tone controls;noise filtering software - nothing worked. Next I will try to remaster using notch filters, so I'll report back.
Possibly, for you, the hum will not be bothersome, but, for me, it ruins the stories. If we stop giving 5 Stars, maybe we can force SOME studio to clean up the Video and Audio.
On a 1 to 10 scale, this collection is rated: 9.1 (or is it 5.7?).......2007-04-24
ONE STEP BEYOND was the pioneer TV show in the supernatural genre. This half-hour ABC TV series (first broadcast on Jan 20th, 1959) was based on purportedly true stories. Occasionally an episode featured the person who actually experienced a paranormal event (The Peter Hurkas Story, for example). Pure fantasy, fiction and irony would later be employed to great success by Rod Serling's TWILIGHT ZONE. Because ONE STEP BEYOND dealt with more genuine (and therefore less "mind-boggling") subject matter, it was quickly surpassed in popularity by the Serling show. The series met a premature end in June of 1961, but not before 97 episodes had aired.
The MILL CREEK ENTERTAINMENT box set of VERY BEST OF ONE STEP BEYOND presents 50 episodes encompassing all three years of this program's network run. Twenty-four season two episodes, 14 season three and 12 from the first abbreviated year make up the collection.
Episode ratings were obtained from a TV show archive website. The numbers may be somewhat inflated, for based on five of these programs that have polling data at a much larger film resource site, the average rating is only 5.7 on a 1 to 10 scale. The TV show site's averaged-out score for all 50 programs in this package is: 9.1.
The following alphabetized list includes poll results for each show, episode number, original date of broadcast and principal actors involved.

Entertaining.......2007-03-09
This was an entertaining little series. The quality of the prints actuall aid in the enjoyment of the episodes. If you do not expect high quality or high talent, this would be a good purchase at a good price.

Loved it. Great sampling of the Series.
Reccommended to all fans of One Step Beyond
Excellent Entertainment & Bizarre Information.......2006-12-06
If you like this kind of thing in general, don't miss this one. These are old black and white TV shows from just about the earliest days of television. In the case of One Step Beyond, each show was a reenactment of a supposedly true story. It is really amazing what odd news stories turn up from time to time. The really odd ones usually only run in local newspapers, nobody knows what to think of them, and they more or less just go away because they involve "impossible" claims - apparitions, premonitions, time slips, and so on. This still happens today, and it always has. So, anyway, back in the 1950s these people made a series of TV shows out of these weird reports and they made a really good go of it. One Step Beyond. I ordered it expecting that I would enjoy it. I ended up being even happier than expected. Quite good. Five stars for sure.
One Step Beyond-Great for those who like the unusual.......2006-09-02
I recommend this collection not only as a good value for the money, but old black and white mysteries about the unexplainable are perfect for those of us who are jaded by today's inability to tell a story without gunfire and squirting guts.
if you love the twilight zone you will love this!.......2006-08-19
I searched all over for a good deal on a one step beyond box set but couldn't find any better then this one. it is cheap for the amount of episodes on it compared to the other sets. the show is great for old sci-fi fans and twilight zone fans.

Image of death.......2005-09-15
I really want this one. My sisters and I were 10, 9, 8, 7, & 4 when my parents were next door playing cards with the neighbors. About halfway through this one, we all ran screaming bloody murder over to the neighbor's house. I could not sleep next to a wall for 6 years for fear a face would appear out of nowhere. I would love to see this one again, just to see why it frightened us so. If I wanted to scare my sister at night, I would just say "Alcoa Presents is on the wall" and you can bet she went running and screaming. I am sure we would all get a good laugh if we saw today what terrorized us for so long as children.
Simply the best video quality on the market for OSB.......2004-09-20
VCI Entertainment has put out most definitely the best prints available of OSB anywhere. I was nearly knocked out at the video quality when I watched this DVD, having always loved the series but like everyone else, having to endure the characteristic horrible prints of TV reruns over the years. I don't know where VCI got these prints but I hope they continue releasing the series, as their prints are by far better than the crap used by the other companies selling OSB DVD's on Amazon. Beware all others regarding quality, but I will admit that if VCI does not step up to the plate, I may be forced to settle for the same old poor quality prints of the other compilations. The quality of the video, along with the ability to buy all 12 of these episodes on one DVD, has made this OSB release the best value by far.
John Newland's creepy world is "One Step Beyond".......2004-01-12
Okay, so some of the prints aren't the best in world, but so what? It's "One Step Beyond" and we are finally getting to see more than a scattered episode here and there on DVD.
VCI Entertainment did an excellent job of putting this DVD package together and I love the spooky DVD "landscape" created by VCI between the episodes. It's not just your average cheapie compliation of "here's the episodes with no money spent to set the mood."
"Ordeal on Locust Street" is worth the price of admission alone, and John Newlands deadpan intos and outros run a close second to Rod Serling's.
Sure, "One Step Beyond" has always been considered to be the poor man's "Twilight Zone," but that's part of it's charm. It's like a night of cheap thrills at a 1950's drive-in.
I just hope VCI Entertainment is true to it's word and makes available future collections.
So buy this set, sit back, and enjoy Collection #1 of "One Step Beyond."
Five Stars, Sight Unseen!.......2003-10-09
The CLOWN!? THE CLOWN is on this set!?!?!?! I am SO buying this right now.
I saw that on tv when I was five or six. I couldn't look into a mirror for YEARS afterward... which the crueler among us would say was beneficial.
I saw it on a couple of years ago as a patchy, chopped up rerun. From an adult (reasonably) perspective, the episode moves somewhat slower than a drunk snail in a tub of molasses -- and it still scared the bejeezus out of me.
One Step Too Pricey?.......2003-09-21
This series is of the same genre and timeframe as Twilight Zone and this reviewer remembers watching the series when originally aired. Yet while many of the episodes of Twilight Zone are permanently etched in this writer's memory, not a single episode of this series rings a bell, except the presence of John Newland and the very haunting theme score.
Here are synopses of the 12 episodes and ratings (5 stars possible), which aired between 9/15/59 and 11/11/60, each episode being about 24 ½ minutes long.
Disc #1 - Delusion - 1 star. Blood donor with a problem. Pretty feeble.
Disc #1 - Ordeal On Locust Street - 1 ½ stars. Birth defect. This writer can conceive several alternative plot developments which would have been much more satisfying!
Disc #1 - Brainwave -2 stars - WWII ship captain wounded. Very predictable.
Disc # 1 - Doomsday - 2 stars - Family curse on first born. Very predictable.
Disc # 1 - The Inheritance - 2 stars - Diamond necklace with a nasty disposition.
Disc # 1 - The Explorer - 2 stars - Three guys lost in the desert. A fourth shows up...
Disc # 2 - The Clown - 2 stars - Just don't look in a mirror afterwards.
Disc # 2 - Delia - 3 stars - Apparent time mismatch for love-lost. Twilight Zone quality.
Disc # 2 - House of The Dead - 3 ½ stars - Searching in Hong Kong for love-lost. Twilight Zone quality.
Disc # 2 - Tidalwave - 0 stars! Shrieking (and shrieking and shrieking) woman in distress.
Disc # 2 - Anniversary of A Murder - 2 stars - Crime really does not pay!
Disc # 2 - To Know The End - 3 stars -Precognition predicament of disaster. Twilight Zone quality.
The two DVDs are contained in a standard plastic-sheathed DVD case, DVD #1 mounted inside the front cover, DVD #2 the back cover. A laid-in folded glossy pamphlet discusses the series. DVD picture quality is so-so, likely transferred from video tape, with the fuzziness one would expect of a black and white 1959 vintage TV episode. (Vci/Ffi gives no clue.) Sound ghosts are faintly audible with 2 to 3 second delay, bleeding over from adjacent tracks in the first two episodes of Disc #1. Anniversary of A Murder had several significant picture defects. There were occasional jumps and other sporadic picture defects throughout. Sound was consistent with that vintage.
One more thing. This DVD is put out by an outfit called VCI Entertainment (Vci/Ffi, vcientertainment.com). As a DVD collector and purist, this reviewer was horrified to find one of those plastic anti-theft strips glued INSIDE the DVD case in close proximity to the DVDs. Such a practice is totally unnecessary and indeed unacceptable to this collector because of the sticky hazards it poses to contamination of that DVD and other DVDs. Such practice may preclude any further purchases from such an offending outfit, depending on their response to this writer's email!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Audio and Video Quality on One of My Favorite Series.......2007-04-28
In My Opinion:
I've been disappointed with past purchases of DVDs of One Step Beyond, specifically that 50 episode DVD. However, was I surprised with this DVD. I am usually more concerned about the Quality than the actual episodes, because I've seen them all, and there are really about only four of the ninety-seven or so episodes that I don't care to watch..
The Video is about as crisp, clear, and bright as I think we're going to see until there is a serious remastering of this series.
The Audio is clear, understandable, and lacking of any hum or hiss that is present in the other DVDs that I have purchased.
The Episodes are:
- Delusion
- Ordeal on Locust Street
- Brainwave
- Doomsday

- The Clown
- Delia
- House of the Dead
- Tidal Wave
- Anniversary of a Murder
- To Know the End
While these are not considered to be the most popular episodes, according to the ratings at several websites, I really enjoyed the Quality of the DVD, the acting, the scenes, and the presence of John Newland.
This DVD is definitely an improvment over the One Step Beyond DVDs I've purchased in the past.

Like Twilight Zone only based on stories told by real people.......2007-05-31
The original in strange phenomenon & based on real stories people told, weather true or not, they chose the stories well. I've seen a LOT of movies & TV shows with roots from these stories... Great to watch, and incredible for any film students out there! If you want to see TV done extremely well, a bit creepy and a bit scary, this is where to start!
Nice for those of us who missed the broadcasts, but.......2006-09-12
John Newland is Da Man of weird story hosting. Polite, urbane, droll humor -- Rod Serling's got nothing on him. 5 Stars for content...
*BUT* whoever put together the collection stuck an EXTREMELY ANNOYING video "bug" (indelible "watermark" overlay) in the lower-right corner. It's just the sort of copyright-lawyer leg-lift that spoils the viewing experience. Boo, hiss.
Maybe a later collection will provide a more pleasurable experience.

I am SO sick and tired of this show being released by so many opportunistic distributors who could care less about the quality of the prints of the show and who refuse to put forth the effort in seeking out the masters from the owners of the rights to the series. That is all we have if we want to own "One Step Beyond" on DVD. It is truly ridiculous and I was tempted to give this set one star, except I enjoy the series too much.
Please join www.tvshowsondvd.com and vote for this or any other TV series that have yet to be released at all or only in limited editions, as is the case with "OSB". This site not only lets you vote on series you would like to see released but sends the results to the license owners to let them know there is an audience for the original masters of all three seasons to be released.

One Step Beyond- Same Stuff Revisited.......2006-03-28
Fellow One Step Beyond Fans...
Avoid this collection if you already have the multi-dvd sets. Every single episode is a repeat, with no new shows added. This is an excellent series, and if you don't have the multi-dvd sets this is a less expensive "entry point" for fans who may have one or two single dvd's. Otherwise, invest your hard earned dollars in other series- there are too many already out there!
P.S. Anyone else out there interested in starting a petition to get the rest of the series released on dvd? I would certainly sign up, and buy the collection on the first day of release!

Hosted by John Newland
Have you ever sensed that you've been some place before, or witnessed a bewildering situation involving the unexplainable or the paranormal? Have you ever been curious about past lives, ESP, clairvoyance, apparitions, or out-of-body experiences? If the answer to any of these questions is "yes," then you've taken a small step beyond. Now take a giant step with the One Step Beyond DVD collection, an anthropology of some of the best entertainment from the Golden Age of Television.
Before there was The Twilight Zone, this highly imaginative series set the groundwork for the ironic and abnormal, and was of one of the first to depict "real" accounts of the paranormal. With TV veteran John Newland as your personal "guide to the unknown," One Step Beyond will take you places far beyond your normal, every day reality
and once you take the giant leap, you will never look at things the same way again.

They saved the worst for last.......2005-02-20
Watching the four episodes of One Step Beyond collected in Volume 12, I begin to understand why such a great show ended after only three seasons. The four episodes, products of the second half of that final season, are a far cry from all the marvelous productions that made this series so fantastic.
Things get off to a good start with Dead Man's Tale (original air date: January 17, 1961). A husband and wife at the end of their financial rope check in to a hotel, and the husband becomes fascinated with a gold mining book he finds in the room. In the middle of the night, he unconsciously types up a story about two brothers who went looking for gold, only to turn on each other when they found it. The wife sends it in to the paper, despite the fact that her husband seemingly made it all up, and the husband ends up investigating the story himself after the wife of one of the men shows up at his door.
Next up is Person Unknown (original air date: February 7, 1961). This episode, which didn't exactly bowl me over, does feature an interesting twist: a short interview with the elderly man whose remarkable story is the subject of the presentation. That story involves the malevolent ghost of a gigantic Aztec warrior. An innocent man is blamed for murder, and his story about an unseen killer is not believed - until he and the police are able to examine an unusual artifact of the killing.
Night of Decision (original air date: February 21, 1961) is interesting because it takes us back to the dark days of Valley Forge, where the miserable winter and lack of supplies (and congressional support) threaten to put an end to the colonists' ambitions to achieve independence from Great Britain. George Washington is almost ready to give up and resign his commission, but then something unworldly happens to change his mind. This episode is actually rather strange because it presents the legend of Washington's vision pretty strangely. First it has him encounter the ghost of a former Indian chieftain whose men proved unable to kill him years earlier at the battle of Monongahela, and then it shows him regaining his resolve after experiencing an uncanny dream or vision - barely describing that vision at all. Well, first of all, the story of Washington's Valley Forge vision is undoubtedly a hoax that first appeared well into the 19th century, and, second of all, I find it strange that the presentation didn't really even describe the angelic visitor who supposedly showed the general the future of America - including the conflict and resolution of the later War Between the States. Additionally, I have never heard of any story regarding a dead chieftain appearing to Washington, although I do believe such a former foe - very much alive - did speak with Washington at some point about his miraculous survival at Monongahela. No one can dispute the uncanny facts of that battle, though, which Washington emerged from unhurt - despite having several horses shot out from under him and bearing a number of bullet holes in his uniform and hat. A case can be made that providence did preserve a 23-year-old George Washington that day for some greater, future purpose.
This volume concludes with Midnight (original air date: June 13, 1961). It is a horrible and incredibly strange episode: I almost question whether what I saw actually was a One Step Beyond episode because John Newland made no appearance and the end credits were radically different from the scores of other episodes I have seen. It's all about a writer who pens a story about a horrible woman named Lilith whom the protagonist meets nightly at midnight; Lilith's influence turns him into a criminal and a madman. Guess who the writer bumps into after finishing his story and taking a midnight stroll?
Basically, Dead Man's Tale gets four stars, Person Unknown gets two, Night of Decision gets 3 and a half just because of its subject matter, and Midnight gets one star - barely. Add that up, and it leads me to give One Step Beyond Volume 12 three stars. If there has ever been a volume of this series you can skip, it is definitely this one.

Customer Reviews:
Four quality episodes but no true One Step Beyond classics.......2004-08-13
Before The Twilight Zone, there was One Step Beyond. This show, which debuted on ABC in 1959, purportedly dramatized true stories of high strangeness, and what it lacked in budget and production values it more than made up for in atmosphere and -quite often - genuine creepiness. Since the stories were supposedly true, that made the Twilight Zone-like fun all the juicier, and John Newland, your guide into the unknown, had a personality and style of delivery guaranteed to heighten the effects of the strange dramas he introduced each week.
This Volume 3 DVD contains four episodes from the first season. I would caution you to always refer to the DVD box itself in terms of seeing which episodes are included in which volume, as this episode information is oftentimes quite wrong in product descriptions. The episodes actually collected here on Volume 3 are The Aerialist, The Captain's Guests, Echo, and Front Runner. These are all quality episodes, although they do not rank among the true classics from One Step Beyond's three year run.
The Aerialist, the 15th episode of the first season, originally aired on April 28, 1959. Mike Connors stars as Mario, a young acrobat who experiences something quite unexplainable up on the trapeze. Mario is wracked with guilt when his father is seriously injured during a performance - just before the show, he had gotten into an argument with his father and made a rash comment about not catching him this time. As luck would have it, he did indeed fail to catch him, although it was not intentional on his part. Mario sinks ever deeper into depression, eventually becoming suicidal - but his life is saved in a completely unexplainable way.
The Captain's Guests, the 19th episode of the first season, originally aired on May 26, 1959. Here we meet a married couple looking to get away from the big city. The husband is enthralled by a certain house and decides to rent it, ignoring warnings about the unfriendly nature of the long-abandoned place. Once the couple moves in, the husband begins to change, acting more and more like the miserable old sea captain who lived there many years earlier. The ending of this one is a little hokey, but the episode itself is a satisfyingly different kind of haunted house story.
Echo, the 20th episode of the first season, originally aired on June 2, 1959. Ross Martin stars as a man who has just been found innocent of murdering his wife. Murder will out, of course, and Martin's character eventually snaps, leading him to kill a second time - the formidable sense of irony that pervades this episode's conclusion will not be lost on the viewer.
Front Runner, the 21st episode of the first season, originally aired on June 9, 1959. This is quite a good ghost story - a very unconventional one, as well. A dying jockey struggles to tell his life's story to a journalist in the final hours he has left to live, desperately hoping to find someone who will finally believe what he is saying. His story is a real humdinger, making this the best episode of this particular volume.
