Description
Cinematographer John O'Shaughnessey ("Shooter") makes his directorial debut. Angela (Jeanne Marie Spicuzza, "Naked"), a student of American history, receives a worthy lesson from her new group of friends. Searching for an apartment for herself and her boyfriend, Kai (James Black), Angela stumbles upon a renovated house beside a mysterious field. She meets Chris (Will Keir), the building manager, and his buddies, Riley (Billy Bradley) and Joey (Robert DoBrev), who invite her to partake in "war games." Chris explains that the field site has remained uninhabited since a troubled veteran occupied it years ago. The group sets out and soon learns about the nature of survival and conquest while confronted by the question, "What is the true cost of war?" Only their experience in "Field Day" can answer.

Rock Hudson and Doris Day had one of the sweetest chemistries in the movies--as demonstrated in several light comedies, including this film's predecessor, 1959's Pillow Talk. The two similar films feature a handsome, duplicitous Hudson duping--then falling for--an earnest Day. In Lover Come Back, the two play Jerry Webster and Carol Templeton, rival advertising agents, vying for the same clients--until Jerry makes up a product, Vip, to get out of a scrape. As Madison Avenue catches Vip fever, Jerry falls deeper into the façade-and into love with Carol, who schemes to steal the nonexistent account away from him. Tony Randall plays Peter Ramsay, Webster's hapless boss. While Day and Hudson are as adorable as ever (and would continue to be in 1964's Send Me No Flowers), a standout is fellow Pillow Talk and Send Me No Flowers costar Randall. He's an effective foil--both comically and physically (as he stands next to the much taller Hudson). Their brands of humor blend charmingly: Hudson's sardonic coyness, Day's innocent sweetness, and Randall's nervous edginess. Look for a pre-Brady Bunch Ann B. Davis as Mille, Carol's loyal assistant, and a pre-Beverly Hillbillies Donna Douglas as Ramsay's secretary. --N.F. Mendoza

Description

Rock Hudson and Doris Day are together again! Jerry Webster (Hudson) and Carol Templeton (Day) are rival Madison Avenue advertising executives who each dislike each other's methods. After he steals a client out from under her cute little nose, revenge prompts her to infiltrate his secret "VIP" campaign in order to persuade the mystery product's scientist to switch to her firm. Trouble is, the product is phony and the "scientist" is Jerry, who uses all his intelligence and charm to steal her heart in this outrageous comedy of mistaken identity, co-starring the ever-delightful Tony Randall.

Delbert Mann's follow-up to Hudson-Day's first hit "Pillow Talk" is less well-known, but every bit as good. Rock in particular shines in two separate characterizations, and Randall's elevator scene must be seen to be believed. Fast and sharp, with a vibrant early sixties look and feel, "Lover" will keep you coming back. Hooray for Vip!

4 out of 5 stars "He's the last guy I would have figured...".......2007-05-20

Doris Day-Rock Hudson romcom Lover Come Back reworks aspects of Pillow Talk in a plot that sees them as rival advertising execs fighting over the account for a non-existent product in a surprisingly and engagingly smutty satire that goes out of its way to mock the void between the two stars screen images and reality. Rock Hudson seems heroically determined to invite rumors by pretending to be unsure of his sexuality ("Just because you can light a stove doesn't mean you can cook") and even creeping back into his apartment wearing nothing more than a woman's fur coat ("He's the last guy I would have figured..." notes one onlooker) while a somewhat sidelined Doris Day gets married as she's rushed into the delivery room. Along the way Tony Randall practically invents both of the Crane brothers and sets up about three seasons worth of plots for Frasier as his neurotic boss. Great fun.

5 out of 5 stars A lovely Day film.......2007-01-22

At times this movie can be a little racie for people over the age of 70 or people who like movies less rated than G. But for the rest of us it's more tamed then most movies now. It's a good Doris Day film. It's funny, and has a happy ending. The story line is pretty much the same as pillow talk. Mistaken identity, Hudson's character taken advantage of the sistuation, boy meets girl, girl hates boy, girl loves boy, then hates him again, then loves each other in the end. A wonderful game, this is worth the cash.

5 out of 5 stars Treasure From The 60's Vault...........2006-10-20

Is there anything more American then apple pie, baseball or a good Rock Hudson/Doris Day Film? It's always been such a treat to curl up with them and the third essential player, Tony Randall. Rock is always doing something to infuriate Doris. He's her worst nightmare. And what's more, he pretends to be someone else that Doris falls for head over heals until the gig is up. Then she's out for revenge, but love always wins out. Ahhhh such feel good, laugh out loud stuff.

So in this one from 1961 "Lover Come Back", Madison Ave is the setting. Advertising is the game of Carol Templeton and rival Jerry Webster. But Jerry is such a cad and a playboy. He steals big clients right from under her by wining and dining them, throwing raucous parties and getting the girl for them. Carol on the other hand, does things a little different. She's virtuous and business like. When he trumps her cards once too often, she plans to get a little underhanded herself. Trying to win over the scientist that is going to invent a new product for our guy Rock, Doris, who has never met Webster(as is always the case), mistakes him for...you guessed it..the shy, retiring, needy nerdy scientist. Jerry, in true form goes along with it, and tries to woo Carol into his bed. And the fun continues...

Doris is marvelous. Watch her face. So many different emotions she goes through. From being Exasperated, to being in love, she does it all. She's simply a joy. Rock matches her perfectly with his pretenses, and has a way with the dialogue that just says Rock! As mentioned Tony Randall is always the third part to the equation that makes these films such classic fun. Here he is the President of the ad firm and Jerry's boss, but hasn't a clue as to what's going on. He does this quite well.Meanwhile, the fun doesn't end with Doris and Rock. The race to make a new product, VIP! is causing quite a few explosions and when the product is finally ready for testing...well you just have to see for yourself!

The rest of the cast is quite a roll call. Ann B Davis, Delbert Mann, Donna Douglas(the beautiful Ellie Mae Clampett), Edie Adams, Jack Albertson, Jack Oakie, Joe Flynn, Richard Deacon,wow... the list goes on.
The transfer to DVD looks great. Picture clear, colors good. The film is presented in Anamorphic widescreen 1.85:1 The sound is in Dol Dig 2.0(MONO), but this isn't an action flick, so it's fine. There are caption in English(a nod to Universal there), subtitles in Spanish and French. There are no features of any kind other than scene selections.

This film is a treasure from the 60's vault. Doris' outfits alone are smashing, and NYC in the 60's too. This film has no rating on the case, but I would say PG. There are some adult situations, but all done in tasteful fun(can you imagine Doris Day, doing anything else, even if she tried?).The other two films that this trio delight us with is "Pillow Talk" and "Send Me No Flowers"

Well, I'm off to watch another Day/Hudson/Randall film. I've got my bowl of VIP and ready for a fun evening.....Laurie

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2006-08-19

This film is good, but not as good as Pillow Talk. It has its moments, though, and is worth watching more than once.

My Beautiful Laundrette, Stephen Frears's low-budget realization of Hanif Kureishi's subversively critical play, captures the contradictions of mid-'80s Thatcherism in a way that's as fresh today as when it was new. Wheeler-dealer Nasser (Saeed Jaffrey) sums it up when he says, "In this damn country, which we hate and love, you can get anything you want." He sets up his nephew Omar (Gordon Warnecke) with a rundown laundrette and the instruction to make it a success, which Omar temporarily does, with the help of his childhood friend Johnny (Daniel Day-Lewis). When the film was first released, it was the gay content that dominated the conversation, whereas now it seems a sensitive and multifaceted summation of its decade, exploring social, ethnic, and sexual issues and contradictions. Bringing together two such different characters as Omar--Asian, ambitious, for whom success is defined by wealth--and former childhood friend Johnny--white trash, ex-National Front--was inspired. Watching their friendship develop into love, and the ensuing bitterness and misunderstanding that they suffer from friends and family, is very poignant. All the lead roles are well taken, the contradictory character of Nasser in particular. By turns, funny, touching and anger-inducing, My Beautiful Laundrette wears its age lightly and its era proudly. --Harriet Smith

Description

With its "extraordinary cast" (Los Angeles Times)including OscarÂ(r) winner* Daniel Day Lewisand "riveting visual style" (Newsweek), this "warm, compassionate and feisty" film (The Hollywood Reporter) about a young Pakistani man coming of age in London is "a fascinating, eccentric [and] very personal movie" (The New York Times)! Living on the dole with his alcoholic father in a shabby South London flat, Omar is a bright-eyed Pakistani teenager who wants to make something of himself. And as his papa drowns deeper in vodka and self-pity, Omar turns to his unscrupulous wheeling-and-dealing Uncle Nasser to show him the key to success. But when Nasser hires Omar as manager of a seedy, dilapidated laundromat, Omar is forced to choose between running a squeaky-clean establishmentor conducting some very dirty business! *1989: Actor,My Left Foot

1 out of 5 stars I don't get it.......2007-05-28

I love Daniel Day Lewis and adore almost everything he does so I thought I would check it out. I can't believe people are giving this movie such high ratings. The acting is horrible, the plot is incomprehensible. I don't have any sympathy for Omar and despise almost every man in the movie for their cocky, arrogant, chauvenistic attitude. I tend to like independent, artistic movies but this movie is ridiculous. Please do not buy this movie. Rent it if you're curious.

"MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDERETTE"

Politics Aside...

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"My Beautiful Launderette" tells the story of Omar, a young guy who is taking care of his alcoholic father during that period in history when Margaret Thatcher was prime minister. People longed for financial success back then (the 80s), especially Asians (like Omar) who were living in England. Asians began their influx to England in the late 6os and 70s and they searched for their identity in a country that was their home but never really allowed them to feel at home.
Omar wanted both financial success and he wanted an identity and he worked at both. While he strove he runs into an old friend from school, Johnny, who had fallen under the influence of a group of Neo-Nazis. Omar brings him into the family business and the chemistry between the two soon accelerates. His gay relationship between the two is underplayed as if it were the most normal thing in the world (as it should be). Any tension in the film is not sexually related but political and socio-economic. The charm and the wit of the film mesmerize the viewer. Daniel Day-Lewis is just amazing as Johnny, he is an actor's actor.
The film undertakes the difficult task of presenting important social issues without sacrificing entertainment and embraces a new kind of movie realism. Watching the two friends trying to make a go of a rundown launderette (a metaphoric look at the economy of Britain) sheds light on the state of downtrodden immigrants. The joining together of two opposing cultures, a Pakistani and a white "punk" also says tons about the British treatment of Asians. Ethnic problems create havoc for the two young men and racial tension is one of the major themes of the film. Even though the issues that are presented are major problems, they are handled with humorous wit and the film is quite funny and very serious at the same time. As an unconventional love story, it succeeds and as a political and economic statement it soars. "Launderette" is also very sensual without showing any actual sex and never exploits the gay subplot.
As I said before, Daniel Day-Lewis is sensational but it is Gordon Warnecke that owns this movie completely. Just watching his character change shows his brilliance at dealing with the complexities of life.
The ending of the film is quite ambiguous allowing the viewer to contemplate all that he has seen and its power rests on showing a great deal without really trying to moralize.
From what I have read about what was going on in London both economically and socially, the movie brilliantly depicts the situation. As it shows the feudal divide between the rich and the poor, it somewhat reminded me of the way things were once were (remember Dickens). We would have thought that modernism would have helped cure societal ills but according to the film things actually became worse. What we have with "Launderette" is a work of magic realism, in a portrait of London of the 80s replete with all of its ills.
Because the gay aspect of the film is not emphasized, the movie left me with several questions to consider. What was the nature of the boys' relationship when they were younger? What happened to that relationship? What really brought the boys together and what factors contribute to Johnny's acceptance of Omar and their final love and devotion to each other?
Questions like these and others are what make this film so interesting and it deserves at least one viewing if not more. I love movies that leave you thinking and this is exactly what "My Beautiful Launderette" does.

4 out of 5 stars Charming movie.......2006-02-17

Not for all tastes.
Top-notch performances.
If you liked " Brokeback Mountain", you will probably
like this one too, allthough the ambiances and are quite

Enjoyable, witty, with fine characterizations.

Don't miss it !

5 out of 5 stars Daniel Day Lewis Gets Discovered.......2006-01-11

Before My Beautiful Launderette, Daniel Day Lewis was a nobody. Afterwards, he was a force to contend with (four years later he would be an Oscar winner).

Omar (Saeed Jaffrey) is an unemployed guy who lives with his dad in a council flat in Lambeth. But he wants to be more like his wealthy Uncle Nasar. Uncle gives him a start by offering him a job to manage a Laundromat. But this Laundromat is a dump and there is a string attached, Omar must date his cousin.

To make some extra money, Omar delivers drugs for another cousin. Omar decides to spruce the Laundromat up and enlists his friend Johnny (DDL). Johnny comes up with an idea of skimming some of the drugs to fund the upgrades. They reopen the luxury Laundromat and it is a hit.

The problem with dating his cousin is that Omar is in love with someone else, Johnny. This is deftly handled and it hits you from the blindside.

This film is great from many different directions. It shows insight into the Pakistani culture and the poor of London in the early 80's.

This is a great performance by Daniel Day Lewis and everyone should see it!

The Woman Eater starts out as all carnivorous plant films should: with a bunch of Brits heading off into the jungle. The intrepid (and just slightly mad) Dr. Moran leads his party to the home of an ancient tribe, conveniently arriving just in time for a sacrifice. ("Stop it, you devils!") Five years later we're back in England, neatly glossing over how Moran got his giant man-eating plant through customs. With the help of native drummer Tanga, Moran is feeding the daughters of England to his plant in the hopes of developing a serum that will bring the dead back to life. (Well, sure!) Soon the lovely Sally arrives to help with the housekeeping, and tension rises as we wait to find out if she'll become Miracle-Gro. The Woman Eater has almost too many pleasures to mention: bubbling beakers, lovely victims, stagehand-powered plant arms, natives wearing costume pieces from every jungle movie ever made, and of course the drums! Oh, the drums! Watch it today and keep an eye on your begonias. --Ali Davis

Have you read the cover of this DVD?

SEE: The nerve shattering Dance of Death

SEE: The Woman Eater ensnare the beauties of two continents

SEE: The hideous arms devour them in a death embrace

Who writes this stuff? Well I did SEE this movie and guess what, no nerves were shattered. There are a couple of attractive women such as the popular British model Vera Day and a young redheaded beauty named Sara Leighton in her one and only movie appearance.

And what about the horrific Woman Eater with the hideous arms and death embrace? Just imagine a very large, bristly pipe cleaner with appendages. Got the picture?

2 out of 5 stars Needs One More Scene.......2004-03-09

George Coulouris and Vera Day star in this silly tale of obsession and plant monsters. British explorers witness an African tribe sacrifice a maiden to a plant monster. Five years later, with no explanation, one of the explorers has the monster and priest on his estate where he is doing experiments on raising the dead.

Women are given to the plant (it apparently does not like men) and fluid is drawn that become the elixir of life. The explorer, actually a doctor, falls for a new employee at his estate and appears to go slightly mad as his experiments near completion.

But add the girl's boyfriend (possible fiancé), madness, love, hate, a fanatic priest and a killer plant and you wind up with a film that climaxes and stops suddenly. It could have been better by simply explaining how things went from jungle to estate. One scene would have done it. It would have been in character for the doctor to gloat some more and give the explanation of his genius.

The ending is not what one expects but it does work into what little story there is. A must see movie for fans of bad monster films as this is one of the worst, but don't expect much.

4 out of 5 stars THE TITLE SAYS IT ALL............2003-05-26

I'm a little embarrassed to admit it, but I love this movie. Lurid title and all. It's a b&w low budget British pot boiler about a crazed scientist who brings a big cheesy looking "tree" back from the Brazilian Amazon that eats women---but only pretty ones. Mumbo jumbo about tribal rituals have intoxicated the doctor (George Coulouris) into believing the serum derived from the tree can restore the dead to life. But AFTER it's eaten a pretty woman. So, he lures young women home---drugging one (Joy Webster from "Burn Witch Burn") with a "funny cigarette"---to his laboratory/dungeon. There, his whacked out "Brazilian native" assistant Tanga (Jimmy Vaughan) dresses them in a sexy outfit complete with bracelets and puts them in a trance by wildly beating bongos. Tanga gets VERY turned on (and sweaty) and pushes the girls into the writhing lobster claw arms of the tree. Will the doc's blonde and pretty new "housekeeper" (Vera Day) be the tree's next meal? And will the nosy OLD "housekeeper" wind up a zombie? Turn your brain off and watch this 70 min. wonder and just enjoy. Nice DVD print from Image makes this rainy day flick a keeper for lovers of old b&w cheesy horror movies like myself. Oh, and that's beautiful Marpessa Dawn (from the Oscar winning "Black Orpheus"---also 1959) at the beginning as the jungle sacrifice to the tree. Interesting career leap. Thanks Image.

Scholastic once again proves its love for fine storytelling, this time by presenting a delightful, animated adaptation of two Harry Allard classics: Miss Nelson Has a Field Day and Miss Nelson Is Back. When laziness and misbehavior strike the Horace B. Smedley School, a beloved, apple-cheeked teacher transforms herself into the formidable Viola Swamp. Her witchlike face and no-nonsense teaching style are just the ticket to spur Smedley's losing football team to victory, tether a classroom of unruly pranksters, and generally restore order, respect, and cheerful cafeteria helpers to the school campus. Diana Canova perfectly voices James Marshall's comical array of buck-toothed kiddos and teachers. School-age viewers and their parents will easily chuckle over familiar characters like Principal Blandsworth and his diverse throng of students. Each story unfolds against an amusing score that blends marching band fare, ragtime, rubber ducks, and whistled ditties. The DVD version includes three comparatively mild bonus stories, plus a charming interview with the late James Marshall. (Ages 4 and older) --Liane Thomas

5 out of 5 stars Miss Nelson video.......2005-10-10

This video was a fun supplement for my class. We did a story unit on Miss Nelson is Missing. We read and did activities on all three books. My class was surprised when I told them I had a video of 2 of the books we read. They thoroughly enjoyed it!

4 out of 5 stars Soup of the Day.......2007-04-02

This product is awesome! I loved the webisodes. But having the DVD is just priceless!!! Thank you so much! Too bad it's over. Will there be a sequel?

4 out of 5 stars A solid effort from the entire cast.......2007-02-27

Initially, I didn't know what to think considering I wasn't familiar with many of the actors on the DVD cover. But I was pleasantly surprised from all of the leads, especially Jon Crowley as Brandon. He was extremely humorous but at the same time sympathetic. It was like watching a few of the guys talk about their weekend dates together. A few of the minor parts seemed a bit rehearsed, but it never overshadowed the strength of the leads. This isn't a big studio production, but it doesn't pretend to be. The directing is strong, and the dialogue is well written. It was especially nice to see familiar sections of Los Angeles as the backdrop.

I think the Webisodes sort of work better than the movie itself (especially in the middle where it seemingly cuts from one date to the next with some continuity problems). Fortunately, they come nicely packaged on a separate DVD if you prefer the original internet version. Alternatively, the full length movie adds a few extra scenes and goes with a more mature rating. Both versions compliment each other nicely.

Overall, the story is charming and the actors pull it together in a very believable fashion. I'd recommend this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars FUNNY, CUTE MOVIE.......2007-02-18

I got the dvd and was really surprised on how good it was. If anyone has been in love with more than one person. They will really enjoy this movie. I got a kick out of the funny parts in the movie. One of them actually made me laugh out loud. I would check this out if you are looking for a funny enjoyable movie.

    Description

Douglas is a playboy writer, and Laraine Day, his secretary, is also a beginning writer. Their farcical antics are greatly supported by cast members Florence Bates, Irene Ryan and especially Keenan Wynn, who practically steals the show as Douglas' roommate. Fans of Douglas will enjoy this lighter side of the multi-talented actor who, incidentally, was eager to do comedy after being in so many serious roles.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars My Dear Secretary.......2006-04-04

This is a great, lighthearted, fun movie! For a contemporary, younger generation, it's probably just too much. But the generation for whom this movie was made, a generation that went thru a war that just killed 60 plus million poeple world wide, it was a simple, fun-loving, fresh, happy, 'the-future-did-look-brighter-and-new-days-were-coming' type of movie. It touches a wonderfully simple sense of love enough times to leave you in a better frame of mind once you have finished the last moments of the film.

3 out of 5 stars Passable comedy thanks to Keenan Wynn! 3.5 stars.......2005-02-25

Of course with an Alpha dvd my expectations weren't that high, but I was actually expecting a better movie. Don't get me wrong, this has a top-notch cast, but they can only do so much with the awkward script which is mostly strained and unfunny throughout the film. The best thing about this is Keenan Wynn's energetic performance which steals the show.

Kirk Douglas plays ladies man and best-selling novelist Owen Waterbury, who's having trouble getting his latest novel started. Waterbury's secretaries have a bad habit of becoming romantic conquests of his, and when Stephanie Gaylord (played by Laraine Day) becomes his secretary he expects her to be yet another easy conquest.

She plays hard to get, however, forcing Waterbury to leave his womanizing days behind him (or so she thinks!). They eventually marry, but in no time at all they're both suspicious of one another and their happy marriage quickly becomes chaotic! Will he be able to stay loyal to his wife, and will she learn to trust him? Watch and find out!

Although Kirk Douglas was usually flawless playing selfish cads ("Champion", "Out of the Past", "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers", "The Bad and the Beautiful", etc.), here he just doesn't seem to be in his element, although he does a good job, given the script's flaws. But the award for scene-stealer goes to Keenan Wynn, who plays Waterbury's cynical best friend who knows his womanizing ways so well. Overall, I think Kirk Douglas fans may find this comedy entertaining, just be aware that it's not one of his best films at all. Even big stars like Douglas made a few flops in their career (like "The Big Trees").

3 out of 5 stars Snapshot of a point in time.......2001-11-17

The film is worth watching for its portrait of a time long gone, but not interesting enough to watch twice. I expected a wittier film than I got, but enjoyed looking at the great costumes worn by Laraine Day. The problem is that the story is perfunctory and jerkily paced. Kirk Douglas is the weakest character. No way do you believe that Kirk Douglas has fallen in love with Loraine Day, or that the swift turnabouts in personality are credible. But Laraine glows and is fun to watch, and the supporting characters are interesting.

    5 out of 5 stars Kirk's Best Movie!.......1999-12-07

For those of you who may have stumbled on this movie by accident, let me tell you that for the price you won't find a better movie. The comedy is sharp and the dialogue is better than any episode of Frasier. Wynn rules as the Godfather Of All Slackers: "If you have the opportunity to get paid for doing nothing then grab it, you fool!".
