To call Pearl Harbor a throwback to old-time war movies is something of an understatement. Director Michael Bay's epic take on the bombing that brought the United States into World War II hijacks every war movie situation and cliché (some affectionate, some stale) you've ever seen and gives them a shiny, glossy spin until the whole movie practically gleams. Planes glisten, water sparkles, trees beckon--and Bay's re-creation of the bombing itself, a 30-minute sequence that's tightly choreographed and amazingly photographed, sets the action movie bar up quite a few notches. And in updating the classic war film, Bay and screenwriter Randall Wallace (Braveheart) use that old plot standby, the love triangle--this time, it's between two pilots (Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett) and a nurse (Kate Beckinsale) who find themselves stationed at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, during what they thought would be a nice, sunny tour of duty. Then, of course, history intervened.

For the first 90 minutes of the movie, Affleck and Beckinsale find a nice, appealing chemistry that plays on his strengths as a movie star and hers as a serious actress--he gives her glamour, she gives him smarts. Their truncated romance--the beginning of which is told in flashback so we can get right to the point where he has to leave her to go to England--works, thanks to their charm. They're no Kate and Leo from Titanic (a strategy the film strives hard toward), but they're pretty darn adorable in their own right. Hartnett, as the not entirely unwelcome third wheel, squints bravely but makes only a slight dent in the film. Everyone else in Pearl Harbor--from Cuba Gooding Jr.'s brave navy seaman to Jon Voight's able impersonation of FDR--is pretty much a glorified walk-on, taking a backseat to the pyrotechnics and action sequences that keep the three-hour film in fairly constant motion. But when that action does take hold, Pearl Harbor is quite a thrilling ride. --Mark Englehart

Description

History comes alive in the unforgettable epic motion picture PEARL HARBOR, the spectacular blockbuster brought to the screen by Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay. Astounding visual and audio effects put you at the center of the event that changed the world -- that early Sunday morning in paradise when warplanes screamed across the peaceful skies of Pearl Harbor and jolted America into World War II. This real-life tale of catastrophic defeat, heroic victory, and personal courage focuses on the war's devastating impact on two daring young pilots, Ben Affleck (ARMAGEDDON) and Josh Hartnet (BLACK HAWK DOWN), and a beautiful, dedicated nurse, Kate Beckinsale (SERENDIPITY). PEARL HARBOR is extraordinary moviemaking -- a breathtaking reenactment of the "date which will live in infamy" and a heartfelt tribute to the men and women who lived it.

1 out of 5 stars A failure!.......2007-06-12

When you think about how much money they put into this movie ... and this is what they came up with??? Wow! What a failure.

1 out of 5 stars Failure upon failure.......2007-05-22

It has Ben Aflac (quack) and Alec Baldwin in it. Minus two stars for each of those.

Pearl Harbor is one of my favorite movies and I was thrilled with the way I could come to Amazon, order it and have it in my hands in a few days. Great movie and great service. Thanks Amazon.com

2 out of 5 stars Why Bother?.......2007-05-10

"Pearl Harbour" could have been one of the great movies that stick with you for ages after the final credits were run. Although there were some excellent points, the overall movie failed to live up to that potential.

The plot follows to aeroplane-obsessed friends, Rafe McCawley and Danny Walker. Rafe falls in love with a girl Evelyn Johnson, but soon joins the Air Force, where he goes missing. Walker and Johnson end up in Pearl Harbour, start falling in love and then things get more complicated by not only the Japanese military, but also Rafe.

The story rather descends into the mediocre with its amateurish mingling of romance with war. Rather than do one or the other well, it does both appallingly. Unlike other movies that mix genres well, (such as the horror/romantic comedy in Shaun of the Dead), "Pearl Harbour" fails to inspire.

The action scenes were fairly well executed, the CGI being of an excellent quality that enhanced the movie. Cuba Gooding Jnr was also another highlight in his role as Petty Officer Doris Miller. He really was a rare high point in this movie.

For war movie lovers, avoid this one. For romance movie buffs, avoid this one. It was a tragic movie, and not in the good sense.

2 out of 5 stars I tried to watch it with my daughter and best friend........2007-05-01

I honestly did try to watch this movie at one point and just couldn't. It seemed like it dragged on forever and ever. I don't do the long synopsis of movies but I will say this. The story was supposed to revolve around these characters during the attack on Pearl Harbor. That much they got. But I didn't care about the characters, the development really stunk. I found myself rooting for the Japanese pilots, a la MST3K. Drivel doesn't even begin to cover it. The costuming was done well, and the props in the sets well selected, but that's about the only good thing I can say for this movie. Watch it once. This is a movie you'll either love or hate.

The back story blows! But of course the Action sequences of the actual battle are what makes this movie worth watching. Who ever wrote the back story should be gutted then burned. What could have been a great movie was ruined.

5 out of 5 stars great sound!.......2007-04-03

4 out of 5 stars Best Blu-Ray yet.......2007-03-17

1 out of 5 stars A terrible film.......2007-02-19

What were they thinking? Pearl Harbor is nothing more than an attempt to remake Titanic with Japanese Zeroes instead of an iceberg. While not quite "Postman" bad, Pearl Harbor's awful acting, terrible dialog, and overall uninspired dross toward a delicate historical event marks this film as one for the bargain bin next to "Showgirls."

Out of circulation for a quarter-century following the death of producer-star John Wayne, Island in the Sky is a tale of survival focused on the pilot (Wayne) and crew of a DC-3 forced to crashland somewhere in the uncharted Canadian wilderness, and the fellow airmen (Lloyd Nolan, James Arness, Andy Devine, Paul Fix) determined to find them before hunger and the 70-below winter do them in. The movie, set in the post-WWII era when military and commercial aviation were still intertwined, was written by bestselling novelist Ernest K. Gann and directed by William A. Wellman, an aviation-movie veteran whose Wings won the first-ever Academy Award (1927-28).

Wellman resolutely downplays the histrionics and conventional heroics; Wayne indulges in none of the macho posturing that his detractors carelessly identify him with, and the crewman who breaks rank in a bid for salvation meets a grim, almost mythically absurd demise. But Wellman also condoned (and himself speaks) the ill-advised narration that aims to tell us what's going on inside the stoic characters. The director does better with throwaway details like the ice pick kept handily embedded in a barracks wall so that pilots can break the frozen skin on their morning wash water. And there's a distinctive war council among the search pilots when no one's quite sure what to do next--the wrong decision could doom the missing crew--and so no one looks anybody else in the face. The black-and-white cinematography by Archie Stout (dramatic scenes) and William H. Clothier (flying scenes) leaves nothing to be desired, and in this crisp restoration it sometimes literally glows.

DVD features
The extras include production reminiscences by William Wellman Jr., assistant director Andrew V. McLaglen, and supporting players Darryl Hickman and Harry Carey Jr.; a short essay on the art of aerial cinematography; and an intriguing profile of Ernest K. Gann, who in his teens directed and starred in a motion picture of sorts. Wayne, Wellman, and Gann reteamed to create The High and the Mighty, much nominated for 1954 Oscars. --Richard T. Jameson

5 out of 5 stars island in the sky.......2007-05-31

i realy enjoyed the film i liked the plot and the danger also i am a big john wayne fan

3 out of 5 stars Textbook professionalism.......2007-05-29

As filmmaking, William Wellman's long unseen Island in the Sky is textbook professionalism about textbook professionals - in this case John Wayne's pilot and his crew downed in uncharted Labrador and the various pilots trying to locate them before a storm finishes them off. There are no surprises (aside from the horrific sight of Andy Devine in swim trunks!), there's an excess of narration at times (much of it delivered by Wellman himself), and it doesn't stand up to the best of Wellman's aviation pictures, but it's good, solid entertainment, convincingly staged and boasting a superb Tiomkinesque score by Emil Newman.

The extras package on Paramount's DVD is pretty impressive as well, boasting a good selection of featurettes, an interesting audio commentary from the director's son and supporting cast members, stills gallery, newsreel footage and even John Wayne's introduction to co-star James Arness' Gunsmoke TV series.

4 out of 5 stars Island in the Sky.......2007-01-04

The only drawback from total 5 stars for this old DUKE classic is I wish someone would have "colorized" it by now. It brought back fond memories of a simpler time when we actually HAD TO CARE for each other.

4 out of 5 stars Island in the Sky.......2006-07-05

A good look at aviation of the 1950's. Good cast and charactors. Story keeps your interest. Great photography, too bad it was not in color.

Based on Jon Krakauer's bestselling book, Into Thin Air re-creates an ill-fated 1996 expedition to Everest that claimed at least five lives, including those of two world-class climbers. Only 90 minutes in length, the film jumps right into the action at Everest base camp and compresses the two-month trek into just a few days of exhilarating adventure. Periodic voice-overs by Krakauer (Christopher McDonald) provide essential background information and guide us through the invisible, intensifying effects of altitude and stress. Krakauer joined the trip to write an article on the commercialization of Everest, but as conditions on the mountain deteriorate he is forced to focus all his energy on survival.

Unfortunately the film fails to really develop any of its characters before thrusting them onto the harrowing face of Everest. As a result, it's difficult to understand the relationships that play out as the group struggles to the summit and back. While the trio of leading actors is solid, only Nat Parker (who plays guide Rob Hall) has enough screen time to develop an interesting, complex character. Peter Horton's portrayal of unconventional guide Scott Fischer is almost hyperbolic and McDonald's Krakauer is stiff and difficult to read.

While the film succeeds in creating a palpable sense of agony and suspense, those in search of a more thoughtful, detailed account of the expedition will be better served by reading the book. --Claire Campbell

1 out of 5 stars Into Thin Air, the ovie.......2007-04-02

Just keep the book, the movie does not represent what it is told in the book.

4 out of 5 stars Into Thin Air.......2007-03-16

An excellent adaptation of the novel. My students (sophomores) enjoyed the film and were able to easily translate it to the novel we'd just finished. The other big plus is that the film, which was made for television, did not include questionable language.

1 out of 5 stars Krakauer's Personal Fantasy.......2007-03-12

Not worth the paper it's printed on! There are several accounts of the tragedy that occurred that day on Everest on both the South and North Face. The amazing thing is that all accounts match, except this one! Krakauer has made himself a hero and everyone else a buffoon, including the Sherpas! What nonsense! It appears that the altitude has inflicted memory damage and self worship deeply into Krakauer's brain. Both Rob Hall and Scott Fischer were highly experienced guides that regarded the safety of their client's much more important than a summit. Do not read this book or see the incredibly non factual DVD! There are many other books and movies that give accurate accounts, please try them!

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-02-05

This is an amazing movie about a tragic event. I have read the book, Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer and the movie is a good depiction of the events in the book.

Sometimes bigger is actually better. Nearly matching the size of director Michael Bay's ego, this massive four-disc set is a veritable Pearl Harbor archive, and ironically, Bay's film remains the least interesting component. It's a purely conventional Hollywood take on the tragedy, using a clichéd love triangle between two ace pilots (Josh Hartnett, Ben Affleck) and a Pearl Harbor nurse (Kate Beckinsale) as an "intimate" means of spectacularly re-creating the attack that thrust America into World War II. The director's cut adds little to the previous DVD release, apart from authentic R-rated carnage during the Japanese raid, and minor expansion of the Hartnett-Beckinsale romance. Commentaries range from superfluous (Bay and film historian Jeanine Basinger) to highly entertaining (Ben Affleck and costars) and technically informative (primary production team), and a spirited examination of visual effects (with Bay and ILM supervisor Eric Brevig) is guaranteed to fascinate anyone interested in physical effects and CGI. A broad "making of" documentary is noteworthy for one-time viewing, while abundant historical records make this a valuable compilation of definitive materials.

The History Channel's "One Hour over Tokyo" and "Unsung Heroes of Pearl Harbor" provide depth that Bay's movie lacks, and Charles Kiselyak's interactive timeline is arguably the finest feature included, providing an in-depth historical perspective on U.S.-Japan relations. Even a brief reenactment of a Pearl Harbor nurse's journal is moving in a way that Bay's film can only try to be, while the "Interactive Attack Sequence" provides a multifaceted exploration of the entire production process (a highly educational feature for aspiring filmmakers). All in all, these four discs offer an admirable balance between Bay's technically impressive but ill-conceived epic and a thorough, fitting tribute to those who endured hell on that fateful Sunday in 1941. --Jeff Shannon

Description

PEARL HARBOR: THE DIRECTOR'S CUT Vista Series DVD is the most extensive exploration of moviemaking ever presented. Four discs showcase more than 60 new shots in the film and over 12 hours of new special features. There's never been anything like it before. This real-life tale of catastrophic defeat, heroic victory, and personal courage focuses on the war's devastating impact on two daring young pilots, Ben Affleck (ARMAGEDDON) and Josh Hartnett (BLACK HAWK DOWN), and a beautiful, dedicated nurse, Kate Beckinsale (SERENDIPITY).

Reviled by critics and largely ignored by moviegoers when released in 1999, Random Hearts is a pox on the reputations of Harrison Ford, Kristin Scott Thomas, and director Sydney Pollack, but it doesn't entirely deserve its lowly fate. The movie's lugubriously paced and its repressed passions are dulled under the weight of relentless melancholy, but Pollack deserves credit for defying the Hollywood Zeitgeist with a mature, substantial film about the power of betrayal to reach beyond the grave.

Ford plays a Washington, D.C. detective; Scott Thomas is a Congresswoman in the midst of a re-election campaign. When their spouses die in a plane crash, the cop is convinced they'd been having an affair, and his obsessive, masochistic quest for the painful truth draws him closer to the Congresswoman despite the mutual risks to their careers and domestic privacy. While she hides behind a façade of denial, his agonized investigation makes him simultaneously unappealing (a risk Ford may have taken as a challenge), sympathetic, and sadly compelling.

Pollack takes his own chances by keeping everything so relentlessly downbeat, but anyone receptive to the story will find that Random Hearts is a subtly rewarding study of tormented adults who've discovered too late the weaknesses of their seemingly stable marriages. It's anything but cheerful, and a subplot involving a corrupt cop (Dennis Haysbert) is a formulaic distraction. But Random Hearts provides welcome relief from dramas that flirt with emotional anguish without delving into its deeper consequences. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Yes, it's depressing-that's what's great about it........2006-09-26

It's also honest-something people avoid if things might get messy. People cheat-it happens every day. The lighting, music and slow pacing only accentuate the melacholy mood of the film. I love depressing movies-music too. There's no escaping the truth for these characters. It's painful. Betrayal always is-eventually. If you don't like depressing stuff, this movie will turn you off-even if you like the leads. Pollack's direction is perfect for the material-something I imagine he did on purpose. This is adult material-it's just that adults don't usually like to deal with difficult issues.

The two weak points of the film are the side story and the romance. The friendship between the two leads is believable-the romance is not. However, the film is so dreary that even these two items don't take away from the film's power. Marrying someone is no guarantee of fidelity. There is a darkness about humans that lies in their desire to please themselves-even at the cost of hurting the one they love most. That, and you will never really know the darkest recesses of the one you love 'til they rip your heart out and leave you "in the shadow of the light from a black sun".

1 out of 5 stars disappointment!!.......2006-08-31

I thought this movie was a big disappointment. Harrison Ford plays a widow who finds out his wife was on a plane with her lover when they both die in the crash. He wants to know why his wife had an affair and how could she have lied to him and how long and how serious...blah, blah. All he did was whine the entire movie. Also, he plays a police officer and not a very good one. This movie lacked substance and character.

5 out of 5 stars A real gem.......2006-08-19

I really liked the movie and I don't understand why some people didn't like it. It shows the true emotions inside us and how we can be moved by extraordinary events in life. Harrison Ford is a gem of an actor. I also liked the acting of others. I think I'll watch it again.

3 out of 5 stars Slow in parts, crummy ending... .......2006-07-30

This is split down the middle for me. I didn't like the excess crime scenes; they weren't that interesting and I couldn't really understand them. Yet what happens to Dutch after he crosses the line with a suspect...I had a feeling it would happen. It could've been worse, but luckily, it wasn't.

Everyone is okay at the end, but it's still disappointing. I wish there had been a happier ending, but the movie ends on a bittersweet note. Too bad.

2 out of 5 stars Duo Noir.......2006-04-15

Random Hearts was a difficult film for me to enjoy. It was so heart-wrenching to watch as two basically nice people are blind-sided by circumstance and painfully drawn to each other as if they had no other choice. It was not my notion of `fun.'

Sydney Pollack's work seems to be well cast in both its primary and secondary roles. I'm a fan of most all these people. Harrison Ford is "Dutch" Van Den Broeck, a D.C. police sergeant with Internal Affairs. Kristin Scott Thomas is New Hampshire Congresswoman Kay Chandler. Charlie Dutton, Dennis Haysbert, Richard Jenkins, and Mr Pollack himself fill a few of the lesser and -- except for maybe Dutton as Alcee-mainly disinteresting roles. Outside of Alcee and Kay, it was difficult to care about anyone in this film.

Despite the beautiful color, this is a film noir after the style of the 30s-50s. It does have more action and outdoor sequences which really require the color but, with some judicious re-writing, this could have been a brilliant piece in Black and White. The darkness of it all is emphasized by the arcane Jazz undertones in the musical score.

Van Den Broeck's wife and Chandler's husband are killed in a plane crash. Apparently, they were on their way to Miami together and had probably done this before. There are more questions than answers as Dutch and Kay deal with the shock of their respective spouse's deaths. They contort emotionally with stunned, angry and hurt feelings within as they slowly unravel the affair.

Both principals look for answers in their own way. Kay wants to drop it, forget it and move on, hopefully protecting her daughter and the dignity of her office along the way. Dutch would like to know more about the dead couple: how they met, their plans, their secretive interest in the Tango, etc.

There are sub-plots that, for me, totally got in the way. The police story seems pointless but I suppose that it's necessary to balance with the equally banal re-election race. Both provide context and perhaps help to move the action along. Maybe they are also supposed to remind us that life continues, however roughed-up we might be.

There are three lines that I find particularly significant. Two are made by Kay, the first when she goes to be with Dutch at his cabin on the inlet just off Chesapeake Bay:

"I'm not going to make any small talk, `cause I don't want there to be junk between us."

The second after Dutch is shot by a rogue cop (Haysbert) and lies in Hospital recovering:

"We did OK Dutch. We did the best we could under the circumstances."

The third line belongs to Dutch and is addressed to Kay earlier in the film:

"What's the last thing that you remember about you and your husband that you know was true?"

Lines don't have to be magisterial to be meaningful. These are minimal but quite good. There are some others as well. (I'm also partial to "Don't! Just Drive.")

I know the movie ran a bit long but I think there should have been more footage in the forest. It was so lovely.

After consultation with myself, Two Stars. It would have been Three if he'd gotten the girl.

1 out of 5 stars Someone owes me 1 1/2 hours of my life back.......2004-06-05

This was literally the worst movie I've ever seen. I equate the pain of watching this movie to having a red-hot rod jammed in my eye-socket. I would rather lasso a down-syndrome elephant than watch this movie again. The producers should have better invested the money spent making this movie on buying a stick of Trident. Do yourself a favor and read a book or go jogging...anything other than watching this movie.

5 out of 5 stars There Is A Little Chappy In All Of Us.......2004-05-07

Where to begin, when I saw this movie for the first time I just feel in love with Chappy. I have yet to see a movie that even comes close to the quality that this movie embodies. If Chappy were a real person I would marry him and have a life of action and romance in his jet, going really fast all over the world and blowing stuff up. I am not sure if Chappy should be hanging out with little boy though, that could be bad. You know what they say "16 will get you 20". You just have to watch this film, you too will be swept away by the passion that Chappy exudes. If I had a chance to save my daddy from the bad guys I would want Chappy by my side, if not sitting on his lap in the cockpit of his jet.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2004-03-28

I agree 1 & 2 were better but they all had a great story line. As far as doug haveing no chance of living when the plane got hit, you cant tell that, all it showed is that the plane blew up. It was a funny movie with a good story line, We loved it.

1 out of 5 stars May Day May Day this film series is in TROUBLE.......2003-12-16

I saw this on cable the other day and it was just plain bad. First they resurect Doug Masters our hero from the first film but who WAS blown out of the sky without any chance of ejecting from his plane in the second film. Did they film this in Canada? I noticed the washroom sign when Chappy introduced "Doug". This film just plain sucked the acting was bad (Jason "damn I tryin my best to act like Jason Gedrick" Cadieux) aside from Lou Gossett, Jr the music was bad and the sound effects were bad. If there is an Iron Eagle 5 Lou Gossett, Jr should be paid extra danger money. When I was 9 I wanted to be 15 when I was 15 I wanted to be 21 Why? cause I hate kids and I HATE this movie

1 out of 5 stars What is going on..........2001-05-03

Iron eagle was the definitive 80s movie -why did they have to ruin it by making 3 sequels that just seem to get worse and worse and cheaper as they go along. Iron eagle two has one of the lamest plots ive seen in my life -Iron eagle three i cant even remember what happened it was so boring and when i tried to watch iron eagle 4 it took me 6 hours because i had to take breaks from the depressive reality of how such a good film could spawn this giant fat failure - I mean what is going on when lou gosset jr has to stoop so low as to star in 4 of these films? -they must have set aside half of the 50 quid budget just to pay him.The effects are continually repeated and you dont actually see any dogfights-just the same gun firing and missile firing from Iron eagle 1 .Then without the missile actually hitting the aircraft-it blows up randomly. I bet there arent over 30 seconds of actual plane footage in the whole series!! -The soundtrack remastered into dolby digital in iron eagle 1 is mono with some random plane sounds blatantly added on just so that some poor guy might see the dolby logo and think some work went into this film. you would get more enjoyment and more dogfighting action out of staring at an raf recruitment poster for a few hours.

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad for an indy picture!.......2006-07-07

It seems that Lions Gate cranks out a lot of bargain basement blockbuster wannabe films but this one stands out! I was riveted to the ingenius plot from the start and could not put his movie down! The writers appear to be of a good calibre for a low budget picture and as a result I was glued to my seat to the very end! A lot of indy DVDs put a nice picture on their covers and claim to have an interesting premise but fail to deliver but this one is the real deal- no smoke and mirrors or bad acting here despite the fact that these actors are relatively unknowns! A Lover's Revenge just might be a sleeper hit and people need to wake up and realize that all independent films are not created equal! Rent this DVD- you won't regret it!

Description

Designed as an overview to the history of launch vehicles in the United States, this 2-DVD set presents over 6 hours of material on everything from Goddard to the V-2 to Vanguard and Explorer I, to Atlas and Titan, even the Saturns and Space Shuttle. The set also contains rare Air Force documentaries, newly restored, on Vandenberg, the X-17, SAC, and the Thor. The set features multi-angle footage of many launches and explosions, with expert commentary by propulsion engineer Dave Mohr. Future DVDs in this line will present individual vehicles in more detail (such as Atlas, Titan, Delta). An incredible collection of rare footage and material.

5 out of 5 stars I Really Enjoyed It.......2006-05-17

After reading the other reviews I was pleasently surprised with this video. I was expecting the worse but it was very well done. The afore mentioned review on the commentary being substandard made me pay close attention to it. I agree it is not "History Channel Documentary" quality but I found it to be just fine, no distracting breathing or other noise.

All in all it's well worth the time and money to watch it. Lots of video I've never seen, mostly about the earliest rockets.

3 out of 5 stars Rocket Buff.......2006-02-25

You have to be a real freak, i suppose like me, to enjoy a title like this.
Could have been better though.

3 out of 5 stars A disappointment . . . but still good.......2005-06-14

This one is not up to the usual Spacecraft Films standard (I own many of these sets, I love the Apollo 15 & 17 6 six disc sets, particularly. Not to mention the Saturn series, the Gemini, etc). I was disappointed in this one but still it was ok, I mean there is not much of an alternative is there? Looking forward the the X-15 discs. I hope they are more comprehensive then this set.

5 out of 5 stars A very nice apetizer for further releases.......2005-04-13

Spacecraftfilms managed to put very good material together, 2 DVD set can bring just a taste of each of many US launchers, there is no space to go into great details. Historical materials are excellent, you can compare them to the Quarterly Management Reports from Saturn V DVD, where I find these MSFC films the best part of the set. The members of each important rocket family are introduced with the Spacraftfilms intent to release further more detailed materials dedicated to each launcher family, according to their catalogue they plan to start with Titan family.
The set is nicely and logically composed with really impresive footages. I personally like best the Delta launch with nine strap-ons creating a beautiful firework circle around the main launcher body after separation maneuver. It's really a piece of art and poetry in the skies ...
Regarding the added commentary I can say I did not find it disturbing. The fact is the commentator not always knew what he saw (and honestly admitted the fact),but this mainly in case of technical details in early launchers, and,he most probably commented "online" seeing the footage for the first time,at least it made this impression on me. On the other hand there are definitely useful and interesting informations given and without these informations we would just watch rockets climbing or exploding. With the general overview material like this the silent, i.e.no commentary footage would be of low value.

Who's got the Spacecraftfilms Gemini set would remember there is a silent footage of Gemini instrument panel. I would love to have there any commentary added - to watch something you have no clue about for 15 minutes in silence is very depressing.

I like this material, it's of a very good quality and I hope the follow-up releases will bring more detail in engineering ,development and tests similar to Saturn family DVDs.

3 out of 5 stars Great footage with one major flaw.......2005-04-05

If you're a rocket buff, this set is definitely for you. Visually, at least...

The two disc sets starts with four formerly classified Air Force documentaries about ballistic missile programs (one of which assumes the viewer is likely a high ranking officer!). Over an hour of historic footage of Robery Goddard's experiments from the 1920s-1930s are then shown...this turned out to be more fascinating than I expected. You witness the birth of liquid fueled rocketry and can't help but smile along with the infectious grin of Goddard and his team. V-1 and V-2 footage is then shown from Germany...a darker period of time, but it's humorous to see Himmler's personal plane destroyed by a failed V-2 launch. Disc one ends with the first failed US satellite launch attempt on a Vangaurd rocket. Commentary is provided in places where the footage is silent...which is a nice addition when there would otherwise be no sound at all.

Disc two is where the trouble begins. The disc covers launches of Juno, Atlas, Titan, Delta, Saturn, the Space Shuttle, and others. Successful (and many unsuccessful) launches are shown. This is what all rocket fans like to see. Also, by the time period of these launches, audio recordings are starting to appear with the launch films. The problem is that the original soundtracks to these launches, with the deep roar of the rocket engines, are ruined by a commentary track that cannot be turned off. It is especially maddening when the commentary on some of the early launches basically repeats itself as multiple angles of the same launch are shown. You just want the commentator to shut up for a launch so you can listen to the rocket in all it's glory. Instead, he just says "Well, here again you can see it ignite and here is where the trouble starts." I can't fault the commentator, since some of his insight is indeed interesting...especially in the later launches (like the Shuttle) in which he has greater knowledge. But like most DVDs with commentary, this narration should be included as an option that can be turned on and off. In this set, you are stuck listening to a monotone-voiced engineer (sorry Dave Mohr) talk over EVERY launch. This is NOT what rocket enthusiasts want to hear. It also is an unexpected trend from the otherwise unobtusive Spacecraft Films...who have earned a reputation for presenting material with as little editing as possible...so you can enjoy the footage without someone cutting it up or talking over it. Instead they virtually ruin this set by not letting the rockets speak for themselves.

Also, the methods for recording the commentary seem flawed, with a very hissy, wispy sound behind the voice. The microphone sounds as if it was placed very near the speaker's mouth, as you can hear every breath he draws. This is doubly maddending when you can hear his breathing better than you can hear the damn rocket!

I would have given this set five stars had the commentary been a seperate audio track. The imagery is great and is desearving of a high rating. The launch footage is spectacular is every regard and rocket fans will enjoy seeing it no matter what. But the overall enjoyment of the set is seriously marred by a major audio mistake...so the best I can give it is 3 stars overall. That might be a little harsh, but it was a mistake that didn't have to be made. It's akin to buying your favorite Hollywood movie on DVD and finding out you can't watch it without hearing the director's commentary over the actors dialogue.

In other words, Stage 1 of this set was successful, but Stage 2 failed to get it into orbit, ultimately making it just an interesting dud. Hopefully, Spacecraft Films will learn from this failed launch.

Note: The two Saturn DVD sets from Spacecraft Films are both 5-star keepers. Both sets avoid the audio mistake made in this set and instead present the hi-fidelity roar of each Saturn launch without audio molestation. I HIGHLY recommend those two sets...especially the Saturn V set.

Product Description

The drums of war are pounding in the distance, and American expatriate Jim Butler fears that the tiny South Pacific island he and his daughter Nona call home will soon be caught in the fray. The news of America's declaration of war against the Axis powers brings these fears to life, as a German and an American fighter plane crash-land on the island. Wary of drawing attention to Sunday Island, Jim refuses to let either pilot make radio contact with their respective combat units. With Lieutenant Alan Scott and Kurt Heimen essentially prisoners, Butler does his best to hide another secret that would make his home a prime asset for either side-the rich supply of oil on the island. Heimen discovers the oil, and turns to subterfuge and murder to alert his allies. Butler begins to see that choosing sides is inevitable if his South Pacific paradise is to remain free. Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars The most laughable war movie you'll ever see... BUY it for LAUGHS!.......2007-07-03

The premise is of a WWI veteran with his beautiful naive daughter (Inez Cooper) protecting a secret (oil) on an island in the South Pacific, along with some 'Hollywood' natives who look about as authentic as those on "Gilligan's Island" and that is being generous. An American and a GERMAN pilot engage in a dogfight and both crash on the island. The German pilot is so stiff and stereotyped, it's terrible - plus he is far too tall to even be a pilot... and his plane isn't even a German warplane - it was obviously American surplus. His 3rd Reich speech about taking over the Pacific islands is so laughable - GERMANS in the PACIFIC?

The dogfight scene lasts a whole two minutes and looks as if two kids had models on a string in slow motion... and in some close-up cockpit shots, the fighter plane on the rear screen projection is actually BIGGER than the plane in the foreground! There are some laughable fistfight scenes, also, to go along with the terrible dialog. There is a scene later in the movie with a Japanese transport plane the German radioed in that lands on the island as it MOWS over PALM TREES! Its wings actually cut them down for a landing strip! The ONLY saving grace of this film is the eye candy of Inez Cooper - so very sexy. The finale with the Japanese soldiers (from the transport), the allied inhabitants and the island natives which is reminiscent of a bad Cowboys and Indians film is a flat-out joke.

There are very few 'wings' in this film - the majority of this film is on LAND, all set on a Hollywood soundstaged island that even Gilligan would have been ashamed of with such poor rear screen backdrops and lighting - in fact, it's some of the worst film lighting I've ever seen. Sad to think that our troops in combat most likely viewed this film as it was released in 1943, during WWII - had to be embarrassing, I'm sure. It's a great laugh for a buck, though and again, the eye candy is not bad for its time.

1 out of 5 stars A "C" or "D" grade movie.......2005-08-12

One of the worst "War" movies I have ever seen. A "German" fighter pilot shot down in the Pacific? Give me a break!
