Nicolas Cage stars in this drama-comedy about a Secret Service agent unable to get out of his assignment watching over an exasperating former first lady (Shirley MacLaine). The two get along like oil and water, but when MacLaine's bored widow ends up kidnapped, Cage's agent becomes a determined avenger. While the pairing of these two actors in a movie isn't something most audiences would ever have considered, that's what makes it so much fun. Cage and MacLaine are brilliantly focused in their respective parts, and filmmaker Hugh Wilson brings an unusually solid and urgent feeling to a story that might have become a dismissible light comedy in another director's hands. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars a great team.......2007-06-28

I became a Nicholas Cage fan after "City of Angels" In this movie ,he shows he can be sensitive as well as funny. The pairing of Nicholas Cage and Shirley MacLaine is brilliant. The chemistry between these two actors is wonderful and belivable as the relationship between them goes from tolerance to friendship and love

5 out of 5 stars Tess has the power!.......2007-06-28

I hadn't heard of Guarding Tess until i found it in my parents movie collection. I was maybe eleven at the time and only picked it out because it had my nickname, Tess, in the title. Since then i have become a N. Cage lover. So i brought the movie because i forgot what it was about.(i just remember i liked it). The only reason why i say this is because by reading the other reviews, it hasnt been teens buying this movie which is a shame. You could really feel Cages emotions through the screen and Cages and Maclaine has a relationship that was pleasant to watch since you don't really see that kind of loyality anymore. And how couldn't you love the ridiculously bossy widow who everyone is afraid to say no too. Which is always a great element of a good comedy.

5 out of 5 stars Guarding Tess is a joy!.......2007-01-03

Never got tired watching it over and over and over again, same as Dave of similar genre!!!

5 out of 5 stars SHIRLEY & NICHOLAS.......2007-01-03

TWO OF OUR FAVORITE ACTORS ARE SHIRLEY MACLAINE AND NICHOLAS CAGE. THIS TWOSOME HAS PAIRED IN A FUNNY AND HEART TOUCHING MOVIE CALLED GUARDING TESS. WHAT A GREAT MOVIE. OUR WISH IS THAT THESE TWO GREAT ACTORS WILL PAIR IN MORE MOVIES THAT WILL KEEP US ENTERTAINED AS ONLY THEY CAN.

5 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly satisfying.......2006-12-16

Doug Chesnick, played by Nicolas Cage, is the secret service agent assigned to protect President Carlisle's widow Tess, played by Shirley MacLaine. He chafes at the unimportance of his assignment but he especially would like to get away from her! She's difficult, rude, arbitrary, and won't let them do their jobs effectively. But when his current assignment is over and he gladly returns to Washington, he is told he has to go back. Tess called the president and wants him to stay. It is an almost constant battle of wills between them, with Tess usually winning.

A key scene is of her wheeler-dealer businessman son (Edward Albert)coming to ask her to endorse a high-end golf club/housing development. He simply came there to use her. It is there in her face that she knows this, as she turns him down. Later, she is viewing video of television coverage of her husband's funeral, during which her son appears to be feeling nothing, while Doug's composure breaks. Brief, and covered quickly, but there's no doubt how he felt. Nicolas Cage is certainly a very good actor. We understand that Tess wants Doug close to her because he loved her husband and is the son she wished she had. Also, no one knows that she has an inoperable brain tumor and does not have long to live.

Suffice it to say that her affection for him is justified when she is kidnapped. To Doug's great professional humiliation, top agents descend from Washington and take control; but Doug, unlike anyone else in the agency, realizes almost at once who is responsible and stops at nothing to extract the information he needs to save Tess's life.

In the hands of two less-edgy actors it would probably be completely forgettable; but it works. Highly recommended.

Writer-director David Mamet (House of Games, The Spanish Prisoner) applies his gift for con games to the world of politics with Spartan. A super-duper Secret Service agent (Val Kilmer, Wonderland) is assigned to find the kidnapped daughter of the President of the United States; was she kidnapped because of who she is, or as part of white slavery ring? Is she dead or alive? To find out the answers, Kilmer puts on disguises, engages in elaborate ruses, and kills ruthlessly--only to discover that he himself may be the one being fooled. Mamet pushes his macho/cryptic dialogue into laughably bad territory and some plot twists seriously test one's suspension of disbelief, but that's part of the game; like any con artist, Mamet knows how to hook you and reel you in, no matter how absurd things get. Also featuring Derek Luke, William H. Macy, and Ed O'Neill. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Hello Operator?.......2007-05-29

I saw this film in the theater and have told everyone I meet to see it. It really is the pinacle in this genre. It is a thinking man's Bourne Identity.

By the way, Val Kilmer is the star, not Tia Texada.

5 out of 5 stars One riot, One Ranger........2007-02-17

This film is a dark, true life look into Special Ops, politics, government, and the men and women involved.
Val Kilmer plays a "black" operator sent to retrieve the daughter of
an un-named political figure (i.e. the President) by whatever means necessary. Kilmer plays "Scott" the "shooter" to perfection and is at times both paternal and then scary as all Hell. "Scott" is the bottom line of the "get the job done and ask no questions" operator who's mission it is to deal (i.e. kill) whatever problem is at hand. The spoken line "one riot, one Ranger" is stated by Scott and followed by another character telling of Spartan, King Leonidas' tactic to send aid in the form of one Spartan. Thus, we have our movie title.
Brief looks into spec ops "Selection", weapons, tactics, and mindset are well carried off. Note: author and former Delta Force operator Eric Haney served as the movies advisor.
Without giving away too much, this is an intelligent, well-made thriller
with very brief, ruthless, and brutally affected action scenes.
David Mamet is well known for his twisted, multi-layed stories and this is no exception. Stunning at times.
A must see.
Note: Mamet and Haney produce the CBS show "The Unit" about the lives of special operations in the field and at home.

4 out of 5 stars Intelligent thriller.......2007-02-06

Val Kilmer is back to top form here as the secret service agent at the top of his game who finds himself involved in a kidnap of a VIP politician - of course, this is David Mamet, so the plot has a way of going into blind alleys and left turns that you never quite see coming. In fact, do yourself a favour, and find out as little as you can about the plot, you'll enjoy the movie all the more! Having said that, the loose ends dont quite all tie up, and the ending does not live up to the build up, but this is only a minor quiblle when the acting and script are of this quality.
The music is minimal, and the directing is not flashy, but all serves to further the story - a quality so lacking in Hollywood these days.
The pace never lets up, and the script of course is sharp and real. William H Macy plays a small but pivotal role in a rare serious role, and the rest of the cast exude realism in all the roles, not least Ed Reilly who casts off his Married with Children tag with this one.
This is not one to see just because you want action, but for an intelligent thriller that engages the brain, thumbs up.

4 out of 5 stars Operatives . . ........2006-12-22

This is David Mamet all the way and something of a tribute to the unnamed, unknown, and unofficial operatives who give their lives to international espionage and counter-espionage. Val Kilmer captures well the steely focus of the hired mercenary who goes after the international white-slave traders who kidnap a prominent politician's daughter. Mamet happily celebrates the toughest and most dedicated of this fraternity of shadowy loners ready to obey the command of any superior. Neither strategists nor tacticians, they are skilled at tracking down and killing bad guys. Period.

This being Mamet, of course, it's not that simple. The plot takes one unexpected turn after another, and appearances are invariably deceiving. His is a bleak vision of a world populated by the morally compromised and people traumatized by the inhumanity they have witnessed. Kilmer's character survives and even thrives in this morass because he is an unsentimental machine, the "Spartan" ideal of an all-male world where it's kill or be killed, and there's plenty of both - even a suicide. Meanwhile, there's the usual flat, rapid-fire Mamet dialogue, like "Dragnet" on steroids. If you like Mamet - and I do - you'll probably like this one. The DVD includes a commentary by Kilmer.

4 out of 5 stars A great pair.......2006-10-24

[...]
The amazing writer and now director David Mamet returns to write and direct an 2004 entertaining domestic spy/crime drama thriller with Val Kilmer. Mamet has a legacy of some truly great movies, including Heist (2001/I), Ronin (1998), The Spanish Prisoner (1997), Hoffa (1992), the awesome Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) (play & screenplay), House of Games (1987), The Verdict (1982) and the incredible remake of The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981).
Val Kilmer does very good job in this one as the stoic undercover operative, although his brief one-line observations about the state of man and displays of emotion seem out of place. Anybody who has seen his incredible performance as Gay Perry in the recent and engaging crime drama Kiss, Kiss Bang, Bang, knows he is amazingly capable in this genre.
The script crackles with Mamet's trademark dialogue, which in this tightly woven genre fits - pay attention, the plot twists depend NOT on the steady stream of action, but on the character observations of how things don't fit together. Excellent support cast all round, with roles changing as the plot evolves. Critics argue that the plot is too complicated/clever, but this was entertaining, with overtones of political conspiracy that make you realize how easy it is for the truly powerful to manipulate events.
I thought the music and action at the end could be tighten up a notch - there isn't a big money-shot explosion or anything to close the movie - just another plot twist. For a more explosive ride, with a more entertaining character, and a much simpler drug-induced and graphic plot, see the recently released Crank - excellent action/adventure from the Transporter man.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining Action.......2007-06-30

"In Her Line of Fire"

Entertaining Action

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

Can you imagine Rambo as a lesbian? Not an easy job to do but "In Her Line of Fire" tries hard. This could have been a really good film with a little better editing and a lot more polish. "Lesbianwise" there is something missing. There are a couple of kisses but not much more. "Actionwise" there is plenty--in fact, it is non-stop.
Mariel Hemingway plays the lead but age has not been kind to her--ten years ago she would have been great. She is tough and knows how to handle a gun. Her love interest, Jill Bennett is a brave woman and attractive to boot. The action which is continuous does not allow us to get to know the characters nor does it allow us to see any real romance between the two women. And the plot...the vice president of the U.S. is on a plane which is going down in a storm near an island where mercenaries and rebels have built their training camp. Hemingway is the official body guard of the veep and she is a tough cookie but we know that the Vice President travels with a bevy of secret service when he goes anywhere. As they struggle to get ashore, they are attacked by the militants on the island and the action begins. We never learn why the plane crashed but it obviously had to so we would have a movie.
Like Rambo, the heroine cannot be hurt and never misses a shot. But the main problem with the film is that the filmmaker had to decide whether or not to show a lesbian relationship and the focus of the film becomes lost because of this. Which is more important--the sexuality of the character or the story? Impact is lost and the film goes nowhere. So sexuality is shown but not a major issue of the movie but, on the other hand, the film gains mainstream acceptance (a sellout).
Since the film concentrates on plot, it is violent but that is all.
The members of the cast playing the militants are weak and this hurts the overall characterization. Visually, the movie seems to be made for TV. The key is to enjoy the action--there are guns blazing and chases, tough decisions and old-fashioned fighting action. There is a lot to entertain audiences and aside from the scene in the plane everything is adroitly done. What we end up with is a "B" movie with poor special effects.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-06-03

The acting is fantastic by Muriel. The rest of the cast is poor and the plot is ok... The only thing is I kept comparing it to Personal Best

3 out of 5 stars On balance, not a bad movie........2007-04-02

Don't expect too much high quality anything with this film and you should enjoy the action.

Mariel Hemingway could still turn heads and interrupt conversations just by walking in the room and Jill Bennett would get more than her wanted fair share of female attention!

I reckon that it was the hope of the cast and crew that their audience would leave all sense of rationality and believability behind when they pushed the 'play' button on their DVD players. I wasn't expecting Academy Award performances and so found myself pleased with my purchase and a welcome addition to my 'collection'.

One question I found myself asking throughout the film... Why was Jill Bennett wearing a nice bright 'shoot-me-if-you-can' RED shirt when all the other characters were suitably attired in camouflage gear?!? Again, leave your sense of rationality behind.

3 out of 5 stars (2.5 STARS) Mariel Hemingway Is a Secret Service Agent: Typical B Action Flick with a bit of Originality.......2007-03-24

"In Her Line of Fire" (also known as "Air Force Two") is benefited from the strong performances from the leads, especially Mariel Hemingway as touch and no-nonsense Secret Service agent who has to protect the Vice President of the United States (David Keith) from the mercenaries when their airplane went down. David Millburn is Armstrong, psycho leader of the military training camp.

The film's contrived story doesn't bother us much because actions start almost immediately after the plane crush. Not many people, even the guerrillas in the jungle, would shoot an unarmed person as the film depicts, but anyway the film is only trying to do what it is supposed to do.

The actions of the film are not bad, just OK with several familiar set-pieces. At first sight the actions of the film look like those made in the 80s, like Stallone's "Cobra" or Schwartzenegger's "Commando," but they are done with much less ammunition or humor here. Moreover, explosions are substituted by special effects, which most action film fans would find disappointing.

The film's strength is Mariel Hemingway's strong acting. Her relation with a surviving journalist played by Jill Bennett is among the most interesting aspects of the film because of the suggested lesbian theme, but the film does not seem to develop the intriguing subplot much. (Or I may have missed the point.) Anyway, otherwise this is a typical B action film with a standard action plot that is made for action film fans.

"In Her Line of Fire" is not a terrible film as you might believe, thanks to the presence of Mariel Hemingway and her character. Still it is also true that she is the only reason I give three stars which this film itself may not deserve.

4 out of 5 stars Haven't bought the DVD yet but!.......2006-09-12

I saw this movie on Tivo the other day and I thought it was funny and granted it is kinda stupid in some parts but when you watch these kind of movies no matter how good or bad they are you expect to see this kind of thing. My favorite part was the 3 fake tenors singing "In The Navy" by the Village People.

I actually liked it better than Naked Gun 2 1/2. I'm also getting the Police Squad series when it comes out.

3 out of 5 stars Three-and-a-half stars...A hilarious, but short parody of the Sax playing Bill Clinton Admin!.......2006-06-13

Leslie Nielsen takes aim at: Sci-Fi
and Bill Clinton at the same time.
Yes, he's still chasing the babes
and he IS over 70! Nobody else could
have pulled this off but a Canadian!

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst movies of all time.......2006-01-23

Sorry Leslie - I used to enjoy your movies (Naked Gun series and Airplane especially), but this movie was horrible. I kept watching it, in the expectation that it had to get better (funnier) at some point. It never did. You robbed me of 90 minutes of my life.

2 out of 5 stars Leslie Nielsen's Worst Movie (At Least The Worst I've Seen Him In).......2005-11-08

2001: A Space Travesty tries hard to capture the spirit of the Naked Gun series, many of the jokes that are trademark to Nielsen just fall flat in this film. Even the references to Star Wars and Star Trek do nothing for this film and just falls on deaf ears.

Judging from the name and box art, you'd think that this would be a space adventure but it's not. The best part of the film is when they are in space and meeting aliens, but even that's still mediocre. When Nielsen returns to Earth, which is surprisingly fast, it goes downhill from there.

This entire film just misses it's mark big time and just comes out horrible, and this is coming from a fan of Leslie Nielsen. Not worth buying, barely worth watching. Horrible film, but Leslie Nielsen fans can endure just to see him

4 out of 5 stars lighten up and laugh.......2005-04-15

All these people giving 1 or 2 star ratings must have been trying to enjoy the Wall Street Journal while the movie was playing. Come on it is a Leslie Nielsen movie! The humor is simplistic and usually stupid. It is not meant to be intelligent, it is meant to appeal to the simplest of minds. In order to enjoy it you have got just lighten up and laugh!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Chuck Norris Movies ever.......2005-08-28

This is one of the best Chuck Norris movies I have ever seen. The martial arts in this film was very thrilling. Chuck Norris
works directly for the President. He does a great job on keeping matters confidential, and when it comes to impossible jobs to be done, the President goes directly to Chuck Norris. He also has the task of rescuing the First Lady from terrorists, and then once again, he must face new missions. This is a movie not to be missed. If you like Chuck Norris, you will love this action packed movie. I will definitely buy any Chuck Norris movie I can find.

4 out of 5 stars Oldy but a goody.......2004-05-17

Chuck Norris is getting on in years, and must be eligible for a pension right about now, but if you have even a shred of doubt that the Chuckster still has the moves, look no further than this for proof that he is still THE man when it comes to a bit of US chop socky.

The rest of the movie is pretty standard TV fare, with an unknown guy I've never heard of doing a second rate Norris impression, some 1995 style editing and the kind of sub-standard dialogue you would expect from a TV action movie, which is watchable but not enjoyable.

but this is what makes it so great. this is an unshamedly retro TV movie, not letting story get in the way of the reasonably good action scenes, and having leads give performances that would make Keanu Reeves blush (Chuck Norris excluded naturally)

And of course, Chuck is the reason to watch this movie. He still has the moves, still has the stare, and still has the charisma to make you watch straight to video movies. warning: rent but don't buy this movie, as it probably won't hold past one viewing.

1 out of 5 stars A Typical 80s Shatner movie.......2000-04-27

As part of a look at the portrayl of the President throughout the decades, I took a look at Kidnapping. Compared to the other movies I watched, State of the Union (1948), Seven Days in May (1964), and The American President (1995), this is by far the worst. With its nonsenical plot in which Shatner gives the President to the terrorist to ultimate victory by a herotic Shatner, this movie is mundane, dull, and pointless. Typical non-Star Trek Shatner in the 80s. A definate "Don't Buy" unless you're researching a project.

3 out of 5 stars Hey Shatner punched me!.......2000-03-25

Forget that Shatner is at his hammiest best, forget that Hal Holbrook is the President we'd all like to have, forget the Police Chief of Toronto is played by the "Nabob Coffee Guy," what you want to take away from this video is that I was in this movie and Shatner punched me in the gut just before the President gets handcuffed to the guy with the dynamite-now THAT'S action!
