Spanish for "Coming Back," Volver is a return to the all-female format of All About My Mother. Unlike Pedro Almodóvar's previous two pictures, the story revolves around a group of women in Madrid and his native La Mancha. (The cast received a collective best actress award at Cannes.) Raimunda (a zaftig Penélope Cruz) is the engine powering this heartfelt, yet humorous vehicle. When husband Paco (Antonio de la Torre) is murdered, Raimunda makes like Mildred Pierce to deflect attention away from daughter Paula (Yohana Cobo). After telling everyone the lout has left, she struggles to conceal his body. The other women in her life all have secrets of their own. Her sister, Sole (Lola Dueñas), for instance, has taken in their mother, Irene (a sprightly Carmen Maura). Since Irene perished in a fire, is this person a ghost or simply a woman who looks like her? Then there's their childhood friend, Agustina (Blanca Portillo), who is desperate to find out why her mother disappeared after the blaze. Was she responsible? Almodóvar deftly blends the ghost story with the murder mystery in his tribute to the Italian neo-realist films of the 1950s. The resilient Raimunda is a throwback to the earthy heroines of Sophia Loren and Anna Magnani. The latter appears in Luchino Visconti's Bellissima, which shows up on Sole's television one night (thus confirming the link). If Almodóvar's 16th feature lacks the emotional punch of the more audacious Talk to Her, it's less heavy-handed than Bad Education and Cruz is a revelation. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars Undoubtedly the best movie I've ever seen. .......2007-07-05

The beauty of life is magnificently captured in legendary director Pedro Almodóvar's latest international sensation, "Volver." Almodóvar is known for his quirky, fascinating and extremely moving films that appeal to all people of all cultures. "Volver" is his best film to date, and it is, without a doubt, the best movie I have ever seen in my life.

I was truly touched by "Volver." The cast is absolutely amazing; for those of you who are not of Hispanic or Spanish origin, it's important for me to stress how much of an icon both Almodóvar, Carmen Maura (Irene), Penélope Cruz (Raimunda) and Blanca Portillo (Augustina) are. This cast, and the director, are the best that Spain, and the international film scene, can offer.

The story is so moving, so adventurous, so captivating that, if I were to disclose even one small tid-bit of information about how the movie begins or how the plot develops, I would be revealing too much. You will have to trust me when I say that this is a powerful movie about the bonds that form between generations of women, women struggling with life's many trials and tribulations.

Seeing this movie released internationally has truly been an amazing experience for all people of Latin heritage, as the prowess of the Spanish film scene is finally being revealed.

If you ever had a doubt about watching "Volver," remove it from your mind, and watch "Volver" now!

4 out of 5 stars Mom's under the bed.......2007-06-12

I was set on avoiding this one. I admired Almodovar's past few movies but found them fairly dreary to sit through, and this sounded like more of the same, and the "celebration of mothers" as I had heard this one was--blech! But a friend of mine wanted to see it on Christmas Day, so whatever, I thought I could sit through it. And surprise, not only did I love it, it went straight to the top of my own personal Best of 2006 list.

It's hard to describe the story, because it is so mundane and yet complicated at the same time. Penelope Cruz plays Raimunda, who has two daughters, one of whom is Paula, and a husband. At the beginning, she goes to see one of her aunts, the sister of her deceased mother. The girls don't want to see her, and certainly don't want to be close, and in these first few scenes there is a lot of comedy about the ritual of kissing both sides of the face; how uncomfortable it makes people who don't want to do it, and how ridiculous the whole thing is in the first place.

Now I have to decide whether I want to reveal crucial plot points, but you know what, I don't. I think it's a lot better for you to see it and let it unfold on your own.

Here are some observations, though. It's very well-written. There is a subplot involving Raimunda's daughter Paula that sets a lot of the action in motion, and later in the movie it is paralleled by a similar scenario that occurred in the past. One of them reflects and builds off the other. And there are a lot of parallels or contrasts like that in the script, and they all reflect and resonate with each other in a way that is very smart and literary.

It's also sweet and sentimental without being cloying. One really likes the Raimunda character from the start, even when she is imposing on friends or being a little selfish. In fact, some of the most memorable little scenes involve her asking neighbors to give them the groceries out of their refrigerators, and how willing they are to do exactly that. There's a nice, warm and moving vibe to the whole thing that only grows more affecting and emotional as the film wears on.

Cruz is a shot in such a way that is a little ludicrously glamorous [especially when she's working in a laundry or in the kitchen of a restaurant], but you forgive the movie for it because she is SO gorgeous. EVERYONE I know who has seen this movie says "Isn't Penelope Cruz gorgeous?" She is also complex and charming and delivers a wonderful performance--kind of a relief after seeing her poorly used in such things as Blow and Sahara.

There is also a variety of characters and their worries, each of which is portrayed in a sympathetic way that gives you that good, "troubles are part of what life is all about" feeling. The main action of the movie concerns a meeting that comes close to happening on several occasions, and a lot of the pleasant tension is waiting for that meeting to happen. I also like that when it finally does, and one of the characters freaks out and runs away, she soon realizes what she wants and turns back, instead of making the film waste our time while she goes home and thinks about it and calls her friends and writes in her journal or whatever a more Americanized movie might have her do.

I don't know what else to say. This, for me, was one of those movies where I was in love with it by 30 minutes in and it only kept getting better. It encompasses wonderful people and behavior and reprehensible people and behavior, but comes off with a warm and accepting vibe. I don't know, I keep finding myself stopping myself before using hideous professional-movie-critic language such as "humanistic vision," or whatnot, but this was something I was expecting to admire but be emotionally indifferent to, and I came out thinking it was one of the best things I had seen all year. If you like a movie that'll make you walk out happy, have a good and patient feeling about life, and show you a gorgeous woman [who sings a magical song, btw] you really should make an effort to get out to this.

it's a dark dark film and the viewer doesn't really get to put the pieces together until the end of the film. I think if you read most of the reviews before seeing this film it will, for the most part, spoil it, since many of the reviews let the cat out of the bag.

4 out of 5 stars terrific or horrific? - spoiler alert.......2007-06-01

I am amazed at the emotions that this movie has elicited from the viewers, considering the horror being portrayed. A young teenager has to kill her father in self-defense and later we learn that she is a product of incest, her mother's sister and daughter at once. Is it really a movie about love? or is it about the ordinariness of dispicable behavior and our ability not to see it when presented as a matter of fact. People, wake up from admiring Cruz's cleavage and consider what her character was through!

I would never buy from amazon again, i never recieved my item, i ordered in may it was supposed to be here by may 18th and i emailed amazon about this to let them know that i hadn't gotten the package, they were supposed to look into it, when i was emailed back they told me that the package had been delivered, funny thing is thati'm still waiting on it to get here, however amazon didn't waste anytime getting the money out of my account, if they had just gotten my item to me as soon as they took my money then i would be happy with that, i will never order anything from them again. use e-bay i've never had this problem when using e-bay.hope they enjoyed my 40 bucks, and if i ever get my workout dvds i'm sure i'll enjoy them as they've enjoyed taking my money.

I am just begnning this four disc workout, but I am satisfied. It's fun, sexy and a good workout. I can't wait to become more fit and tone. I have a feeling in will become more beneficial to me in more that just having a hot body!!!

2 out of 5 stars Not the best.......2007-06-01

I thought that this would be a whole workout routine, but the hip-hop part loops the same few steps over and over again. I didn't do the "Lap Dance" section, so I can't speak on that. But, if you're getting it for the hip-hop, don't bother.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-05-21

I got main tips for my husband private striptease. Also it's a great video to get into shape.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome workout!.......2007-05-17

On a whim I purchased Striptease because my workouts had been boring me. I thought it would be a fun way to change things up but wasn't expecting very much. I was very wrong. The dance routines make me work up a sweat and the 2nd video - fit to strip- made my buns ache! This is definitely a great workout but a fun one as well so that I am not bored. I mean anything that gets me up at 5:30am 4 times a week every week must be pretty good. Great investment.

As deadpan comedies go, Napoleon Dynamite stands in a class all its own. Played by John Heder, the title character is (in the words of critic Roger Ebert) "the kind of nerd other nerds avoid," a mouth-breathing dweeb with a mangy nest of orange hair, and ungainly features that suggest a perpetual state of half-conscious depression. He lives in Preston, Idaho (former home of 24-year-old director Jared Hess) with his thrill-seeking grandma and 32-year-old brother, and his days at high school consist mostly of being abused or ignored by indifferent classmates. Napoleon's sad-sack story doesn't offer the scathing, impassioned humor of Welcome to the Dollhouse because Hess (who cowrote the nearly plotless screenplay with his wife, Jerusha) doesn't have an angst-ridden axe to grind. Instead, the comedy (which exists in a tacky universe of worn-out rural suburbia) is so low-key that some will find it difficult to laugh, while others (i.e., those who feel superior to Napoleon) will have plenty of fun at Napoleon's expense. The result is a curiously uneven film, hilarious at times, but hampered by its own sense of affectionate mockery. An audience favorite at the Sundance film festival, Napoleon Dynamite may not be entirely lovable, but it's definitely unique. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars It's actually hard to describe why this movie was so funny..........2007-05-06

When someone gushes about a movie being the funniest thing they've ever seen, it usually kills it for me. Fortunately, I had no expectations at all for this movie, and ended up thinking it was hilarious.

I don't know where to start...Napoleon's brother is SUCH a dweeb you'll want to smack him yourself---yet I'm laughing even now thinking about him. There are all these subtle continuity errors and era-inappropriate artifacts that are so obvious they had to be intentional, and even those still make me laugh.

But the real reason the movie is funny is because most of the characters are so incredibly pathetic they'll remind you, sometimes quite painfully, of real people. Some parts almost make you cringe that way.

If you're looking for something a little different, and if you can sit down to watch this without any particular expectations, you might accidentally get a huge kick out of it. I did. (Make sure you watch the part after the credits; a lot of people miss that.)

By dint of the inexplicable popularity of their send-up of movie genres in the parody movies Scary Movie and Date Movie, writer/director duo Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer probably got an epic-sized bucket of cash for this hastily stitched pastiche of drive-by entertainment. There's no particular variety of movie they were sent to send up this time, unless big box-office grossers has now become a genre in and of itself. If so, Epic Movie may well qualify as part of that league itself. Very little expense has been spared to make so-called "comic" references to a slew of mostly recent blockbusters--The Chronicles of Narnia, Borat, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the X-Men and Harry Potter series, Superman Returns, Nacho Libre, and The Da Vinci Code to name a few--and it's assumed we've seen them all. In a goofy thread of a story about four orphans plucked from some of the above, battle must be done through various bastardized plots from same so that a prophecy can be fulfilled and they can assume their rightful place as rulers of a sacred land. Lots of crotch kicks, fart, urine, and vomit jokes speed by as we pass through Willie Wonka's factory and a magical wardrobe with an unusually interesting assortment of look-alikes and name actors caught up in the gag mix (some of it legitimately funny). Darrell Hammond, Crispin Glover, David Carradine, Kevin McDonald, Carmen Electra, Kal Penn put on game (and sometimes gamy) faces, and it's definitely a hoot to watch comedy improv alums Fred Willard and Jennifer Coolidge as Aslo the Lion and the White Bitch do battle in a Narnian good vs. evil character smackdown. As lame as you already expect a movie like this to be, anything that can throw together an homage to C.S. Lewis alongside MTV's Punk'd in less than 90 minutes can't be all bad. --Ted Fry

1 out of 5 stars Goat Voice: bahahahahahhahahahahadddddddd movie........2007-07-04

I love parody movies, I am able to enjoy movies most others can't stand, and there have been some great parody movies over the years. But lately they have become more a trend to make then actually trying to make what a film parody is about... mocking other films in a funny manor, which is what Epic movie fails to do in 99% of it's attempt.

This film had a budget, it had the stars, it had nice sets, nice scenery, nice stages, BUT NO JOKES!!!!!!!! This is not a parody movie, this is clip's of movies you know with BAD attempts at jokes but I would rather see "actors who did not get to be in the big time movies that have been shown in the last few years that really really wanted to be in those films" rather then "parody" titled with this thing.

I do not consider this a parody movie. Nothing was funny at all, nothing made me laugh, nothing made me think "that was a good one" or "why didn't i think of that" and the whole thing was a big waste of time that these actors should hide there faces in for being part of.

The only thing I finally got a laugh out of was the end credits when it showed some outtakes... shows how funny a movie is when they have to do something by accident to actually be funny.

there attempt at "gross humor" with puss, pimples, farts, feces and vomit... been done a 1000 times, no shock value in anything you have already seen before and I love shock value humor, but this movie fails to come up with anything unexpected, over the top, or most importantly, NEW.

I love parody movies, if you loved movies like Hotshots, Naked Gun, KFM, Spaceballs, Scary Movie and the rest of the best... then take my word for it when I tell you that Epic movie makes Scary movie 3 & 4 seem hilarious compared to this epic p.o.s.

Why did they even make this film? Who gave it the OK? Who said it was good enough to be released.... in theaters??? Dont waste your time on this epic piece of s**** and expect an even worse sequel to be made soon.

4 out of 5 stars epic movie.......2007-07-03

My Oppinion: Epic Movie was funny they could've done without the nacho lebrie skit but oh well. i thought it was stupid and hilarious, that's what it was meant to be.

About the film: Epic Movie is a spoof film of The Chronicals Of Narnia, Charlie & The Chocolate Factor & a little bit of everything else. It's mainly about four orphanes who win a ticket to willy wonka's factory and discover narnia and fight the evil white [...](The bad Guy), and in all of this they run into the most odd opsticales.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Movie, Very Few Laughs.......2007-07-02

Following in the traditions of the 'Scary Movie' series, this movie is awful. Their really is no story line. The purpose of the movie is to try to make fun of other movies but the problem is the jokes are horribly unfunny. The only amusing part of this movie to me is the Captain Jack Sparrow scenes and only because they imitate him well. There was way too much 'Lion, Witch & The Wardrobe' spoofing. Whoever wrote this should be fired.

1 out of 5 stars Time for directors to change their ideas .......2007-06-28

Epic Movie, a pointless and mostly unfunny movie, is out to get a get a few cheap laughs in an attempt to keep the parody-movie carousel going. Seemingly out to cash it on some of its predecessors (Scary movies, Date Movie, etc), the directors of this film try to get some chuckles with some of the same material: over abundance of lewdness and profanity, repeated jokes and lines, continual attempts at parodying some recent movies. As one reviewer mentioned, some of the movies that are parodied aren't anything worth making fun of, so at times the humor attempts are a bit perplexing.

What makes this comedy a failure is that there are ideas within each of these films to satirize, but the directors completely miss the mark because they are so concerned with juvenile humor. For instance, the opening scenes, where they are making fun of The Da Vinci Code and then Snakes on a Plane, could have been funny if they had taken the direction of actually mocking those films. What do they do instead with the frantic scene on the plane? Have some guy come out and repeat a line about ten times with profanity in it for some juvenile humor. Ha, ha. Real funny.

There are some other points where they could have used a movie's excessive popularity against it in a satire or parody, but instead they once again just relied on stupidity and immature jokes to make fun. The biggest examples are many of The Chronicle of Narnia scenes, when they first meet the queen ....

Everything about this movie is just about cashing from former types just like it. I'm sure there will be another film type like this within a year, and we might be writing the same reviews again.

Hopefully the directors will decide to change the course of their upcoming comedies and try a different formula in their movies, because their stuff is becoming old quick.

1 out of 5 stars ugh, why did I think it was gonna be good?.......2007-06-24

I am so dumb. I can't believe I had expectations for this movie to be good. I mean, it was slightly funny at some parts, but others just drag on and continue to be a desperate-to-be-funny bore. I like the Scary Movie series, and Date Movie was alright, but this just goes way too overboard. A friend of mine saw this movie in the theaters. When she came back, she said that she liked it, but told me that I wouldn't. I should've listened to her.

Can this even be called a movie? I view it as a series of skits spoofing other movies, kinda like a crappy version of Robot Chicken. In fact, I don't even think it can be called a spoof movie. It constantly just steals other scenes and other jokes from the movies it supposedly "parodies" and uses them completely out of context. Just look at the Nacho Libre scene.

I don't think a movie this pointless should've gotten a wide theatrical release. In fact, it would've been enough for it to be just a direct-to-video movie, because this shows just how overboard the Spoof Movie series is going. It has turned into a chaotic mess ever since the Wayans Brothers were kicked out of the house. I would be pretty angry if I were them, seeing a franchise I created being pissed on so greatly.

The movie was so bad that as I walked out of the theater the ticket taker personally apologized for not warning me. He said that if he told me how bad it would be, he would've gotten fired.
I think that's funnier than a good 90% of this piece of garbage.

The toilet is overflowing; the toilet is the Spoof Movie series, and the substance that is overflowing is this pathetic excuse for a movie.

This '90s update of the Spencer Tracy-Elizabeth Taylor hit is a mix of the pleasant and the silly, a nice enough movie but a little too controlled to become particularly interesting. Steve Martin plays the aging patriarch who is threatened by his daughter's engagement and not-quite-willing to let her go. The writing-directing team of Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers provides Martin's character with a perhaps too-broad range of comic responsiveness to the situation, some of it gentle (a ritual game of basketball between dad and his little girl) and some of it slapstick (Martin sneaking around his prospective in-laws' house and encountering a guard dog). Martin Short turns up as a wedding coordinator--which has deliriously delicious possibilities--but his inventiveness doesn't quite strike the chord this time. --Tom Keogh

Description

You're invited to celebrate with this funnier-than-ever 15th Anniversary Special Edition of a timeless comedy. Steve Martin delivers a winning performance as George Banks, the befuddled father who has a hard time letting go of his young daughter (Kimberly Williams) when she unexpectedly announces her plans to wed. The "I do's" and don'ts of her big day prove no small feat for George as he runs into an off-the-wall wedding planner (funnyman Martin Short), his patient, level-headed wife (Diane Keaton), and hysterical hitches. You won't want to miss the never-before-seen bonus features, including behind-the-scenes interviews, commentary, and the Steve Martin & Martin Short interview -- now available to have and to hold forever!

5 out of 5 stars Wedding at it's funniest!.......2007-04-24

Steve Martin in one of his most memorable roles as "father of the bride". From the beginning to the end this movie is amusing and entertaining. All characters are well cast and act out a Hollywood version of what a wedding could be like. Martin Short is hilarious in his role as "Fronk", the wedding coordinator.
We love this movie! Five Stars!

Swordfish is a superficial movie, so let's address the superficial facts: Halle Berry was well paid to bare her breasts in this gratuitous cyber-action thriller, and while Berry's many fans will enjoy a cheap drool at the actress's expense, her brief topless scene doesn't justify this insipid parade of glossy violence from the director of 2000's Gone in 60 Seconds. Add yet another notch in John Travolta's bad-movie belt, and you've got Hollywood bankruptcy in full blossom. Go ahead, marvel at director Dominic Sena's biggest money shot--a 360-degree pan as a robbery hostage is blown to bits by a bomb that pelts a surrounding SWAT squad with deadly ball bearings.

The plot, as if it matters: Travolta's a slick, self-appointed antiterrorist who recruits a top-flight computer hacker (Hugh Jackman) to transfer a $9.5 billion government slush fund into a cluster of secret accounts. Berry's the curvaceous bait who lures Jackman into the scheme; Don Cheadle's an FBI agent hot on their tails; and an obligatory subplot turns Jackman's daughter (Camryn Grimes) into an innocent bargaining chip. By the time a hostage transport bus is airlifted in the film's not-so-thrilling climax, Swordfish will hold your passive attention or put you to sleep--it all depends on your tolerance for Sena's brand of derivative bloodlust. It's pornography of a sort, and efficiently mechanical, but you can bet good money that Berry and her costars didn't cash their paychecks proudly. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars I really liked it, even more so in HD.......2007-06-14

I thought this was a great movie anyway, in HD it's even better.

4 out of 5 stars Swordfish.......2007-06-08

Another great job by John Travolta and Hugh Jackman, both are great in this movie... John play such a bad boy so good...

3 out of 5 stars Swordfish.......2007-06-02

Travolta is absolutely insane in this movie. He acts like a psychopath. He is crazy. The other actors aren't fit enough to hold Mr. Travolta's coat. He outperforms them all!! Pure evil genius!!

5 out of 5 stars Miss Direction Stan.......2007-03-29

This movie is great. For one, there is no clear cut good or bad guy. To be honest I believe the reason I like this movie is because I identify with some of the thoughts portrayed by John Travolta's character. With terrorism on everyones mind, Swordfish gives an aggressive response to would be terrorists and those who wish to do harm to America and our interests. To often we trade security for sheer diplomacy, this film shows another way. The acting is great, and panning special effects are stunning. Computers, Robbery, Corrupt Politicians, Fast Cars, Explosives, Big Guns, and ... Halle Berry

4 out of 5 stars Not worth the price of the breasts.......2007-03-09

Well given performances by Don Cheadle, John Travolta, Hugh Jackman, and Halle Berry, breasts notwithstanding (the woman does have undeniable sex appeal, and it's in full swing in this flick). The story does have a flaw when Travolta's character interacts with a certain governmental agent - it just doesn't work for me as a motive. Travolta's greed would have been a much better plot line. Jackman gives a fun performance as a dancing (!) hacker who wants to get his daughter back from, for all you Soprano fans, a very drunken and drugged out Drea. I love the music - Paul Oakenfold, who perfectly catches the action and the drama as it unfolds into the magic of misdirection.

1 out of 5 stars didn't recieve item.......2007-06-27

5 out of 5 stars Useful in so many ways.......2007-06-08

Product Description

Hard-drinking, burnt-out ex-CIA operative John Creasy (Washington) has given up on life--until his friend Rayburn (Oscar winner Christopher Walken) gets him a job as a bodyguard to nine-year-old Pita Ramos (Dakota Fanning). Bit by bit, Creasy begins to reclaim his soul, but when Pita is kidnapped, Creasy unleashes a firestorm of apocalyptic vengeance against everyone responsible.

Style trumps substance in Man on Fire, a slick, brooding reunion of Crimson Tide star Denzel Washington and director Tony Scott. The ominous, crime-ridden setting is Mexico City, where a dour, alcoholic warrior with a mysterious Black Ops past (Washington) seeks redemption as the devoted bodyguard of a lovable 9-year-old girl (the precociously gifted Dakota Fanning), then responds with predictable fury when she is kidnapped. Prolific screenwriter Brian Helgeland (Mystic River, L.A. Confidential) sets a solid emotional foundation for Washington's tormented character, and Scott's stylistic excess compensates for a distended plot that's both repellently violent and viscerally absorbing. Among Scott's more distracting techniques is the use of free-roaming, comic-bookish subtitles... even when they're unnecessary! Adapted from a novel by A.J. Quinnell and previously filmed as a 1987 vehicle for Scott Glenn, Man on Fire is roughly on par with Scott's similar 1990 film Revenge, efficiently satisfying Washington's incendiary bloodlust under a heavy blanket of humid, doom-laden atmosphere. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Not great, but not bad.......2007-06-20

To my surprise, Tony Scott's remake of Man On Fire isn't the war crime I was expecting by a long shot. Horribly over-directed in places, true, but nowhere near as irritating as Domino, which is the closest ADDS filmmaking has come to projectile vomiting at the audience to date. It helps that Scott has a decent script and a good cast to keep his worst excesses in check, and it has to be said that some of the stylistic touches (such as the very active subtitling) are really pretty good. He's better at framing the surrounding scenes than some of the big moments, which are fairly tension and adrenaline-free for all their imagination, but he's prepared to get his hands far dirtier than you'd expect from a mainstream studio picture, and he even manages a couple of moments of emotional resonance as well. It's certainly much better than the dire original, which only had a good John Scott score (part of which turned up in Die Hard) going for it (aside from the film's change of location from Italy to Mexico, the song has changed from Someone to Watch Over Me - well, Ridley beat him to that one - to Linda Ronstadt's infinitely less relevant cover of Blue Bayou). Good to see Christopher Walken in a good guy role again, too.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch film starring Denzel Washington.......2007-06-19

Man on Fire is one of the best crime drama films I have had the pleasure of viewing. Set in the heart of Mexico, the film tells a fantastic story that is backed up by great direction and cinematic appeal. With that said, you throw in top notch actors like Denzel Washington and Christopher Walken and it does more than make the grade.

Man on Fire centers on John Creasy, a burned out loner type whose only resolve in the present day is a bottle of liquor. Creasy meets up with an old friend (played by Walken) who turns him towards work as a bodyguard for a family's daughter in Mexico, a place where multiple ransom based kidnappings occur on a regular basis. Given his extensive background of military accomplishments which includes counter terrorism and Special Forces (to name a few) he is hired almost immediately, although he himself is reluctant about the new role.

The character development of Creasy is excellent, but I would have to attribute that as much to the screen presence of Denzel as I would anything else. Overall the direction of this movie is superb, using captions when necessary and applying some different camera uses in regards to angles and perception to allow different moods to be invoked for a specific scene. Dakota Fanning plays as the daughter that he is supposed to protect, and I feel was a good choice for the role. As the movie moves on, we learn little about Creasy's past but get to explore him tearing down some walls in the present, as both a "vigilante with a vengeance" persona as well as seeing the human compassion side of him in his adoration of the little girl he is paid to protect. The film has it all when it comes to twists and turns as well as themes of corruption, family, and revenge. As Creasy says it best in the movie; "revenge is a dish best served cold". The films emotional conclusion is still a stoic ending when you take into account all the harrowing events and actions that led up to it. I feel what makes this film so much better than many of its kind is the ability to evoke a great seriousness within the main character while putting him in a dire situation throughout much of the film.

Bonus Disc: If you were a fan of this film when it first came out then you may enjoy this particular "Collector's edition Steelbook" package, which features a bonus disk chocked with extra's including multiple trailers, behind the scenes footage and an interesting documentary that talks about the ransom based kidnappings that take place in places like Mexico on a regular basis. Also discussed somewhat is the history of this story which originally came from a novel and had an initial film made about it starring Scott Glenn several years ago.

2 out of 5 stars kinda wet (as opposed to all wet).......2007-06-12

How do you take a decent script, fine cast and turn it into average, run-of-the-mill, uninteresting film fare?
Easy. Get a no-talent hack like Tony Scott to direct--with his whirling dervish, idiotic, mindless, pointless,
car commercial, dizzying camera moves and editing.

It's sad. Because Denzel is working his butt off here, so is the incredible Dakota Fanning, not to mention the fine cameo that Chris Walken turns in--depressingly enough, Tony Scott simply will not leave the camera alone...and keeps spinning it, twisting it, whirling it, gliding with it--not to mention the constant changing from 16 mm to 35mm to Super 8 mm...Man oh man; this is infuriating.

And he does it every damn time. He did it with Top Gun, Days of Thunder... Why destroy otherwise excellent performances with incredibly useless, distracting camera moves? WHO ARE YOU TRYING TO IMPRESS? THE CAMERA SHOULD NOT BE NOTICED AT ALL! don't you understand that? You pull the audiance out of the fantacy by making them aware of your relentless camera SHENANIGANS.

I just don't get it.

Hey, Mr. Scott: it's very simple. Leave the actors be. Let them do what they were hired to do--which is to act! We don't need to know your camera is (always) there. Period. (In fact, we preffer it when we do not know the camera exists at all!)

Take a look at some of the late, great John Ford's films. Want to see the way a film should be directed? Take a look at John Ford. Please.

5 out of 5 stars Best Punisher Movie Ever Made.......2007-05-28

I've seen Man On Fire multiple times since it's original release, and it never ceases to amaze me. Often times critics will reference a mild weakness in the plot, which I for the life of me cannot seem to find. I understand that Tony Scott's directing techniques may not necessarily be for everyone, but this is a film that simply would not be the same without it. From frenetic pans and out-of-focus shots to overlapping of frames and free-roaming subtitles, the direction and editing in Man On Fire takes the viewer into the chaotic plot of a man not only out for revenge, but a sense of self-redemption (assumably).

The only thing I'd really like to point out is in relation to the title of my review. For any comic book reader out there that was seriously disappointed with The Punisher movie, I'd highly recommend this as a substitute. Man On Fire is pretty much the very essence of the Marvel Comics character, with the exception of his name being Creasy and being a black guy. But everything about this flick radiates Frank Castle.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest musicals.......2007-07-05

Can-Can is a "must" within the list of Fox Musicals. Unfortunately, the Spanish version is terrible, as neutral Spanish is used rather than proper an correct Spanish.

4 out of 5 stars This is the film that Khruschchev considered "decadent"!.......2007-06-15

When then-Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev visited the U.S. in 1959, he made a storied visit to Hollywood where he almost started a minor international incident when he wanted to visit Disneyland but was waved off for security reasons. He was also invited to visit the set of "Can-Can", then in filming, and he and his delegation were seated to view one of the movie's big set pieces with the can-can dancers. He reacted _exactly_ like the bluenoses in the movie. :) According to him, Shirley MacLaine and her can-can girls were a perfect example of Western decadence. One only wonders what he would have made of "Girls Gone Wild".

Be that as it may, this is a movie I've been waiting a very long time to see - I've never been able to find it on VHS. I'm not an especial fan of Shirley MacLaine, to be candid (which is why I give this movie "only" 4 stars), but that wariness really applies more to her New Age kookiness in the 1980's and later; in the 1950's, she was a young, sprightly, cute, sexy redhead with great legs. She's not half bad in the role of the cabaret owner who fights two comic battles; to save the can-can and to get the skittish Frank Sinatra to put a ring on her finger. Sinatra, Louis Jourdan and Maurice Chevalier, the movie's three male leads, are also very good, and the film is full of gorgeous set-pieces, including (of course!) several can-can sequences full of whirling petticoats and royal flashes.

Not quite as good as Jean Renoir's immortal "French Can-Can", but great fare for a weekend evening!

5 out of 5 stars A long awaited delight.......2007-06-09

Having had to buy the VHS version of this film some years ago because no DVD was avilable I was delighted when this product appeared, to see if the modern technology could improve on the VHS format. It certainly does improve the picture and sound which coupled with the great performances of the stars and Cole Porters songs make it a pleasure to see.

5 out of 5 stars Out On DVD At Last!.......2007-06-08

What can one say about Can Can. I saw this motion Picture three times in Todd AO when it came out. It is a rollicking good story with great music. Good performances by all of the cast. The Restoration for the DVD seems to have been done very well with only a very little evidence of the sort of colour shift that can occur with old negative or positive films. The pictures on the DVD are nice and crisp and a pleasure to watch. It is nice to See that the DVD is in the original Todd AO format of 2.2:1 as seen in the Cinema. A good addition to the DVD library of any collector of Musicals. For me it was a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars Finally on DVD, looking darn fine, if not perfect!.......2007-05-15

It took ten long years, but the wait is over!
"Can-Can" is certainly not very high on the list among the best film adaptations of Broadway musicals, but it contains lots of character charm and professional know-how, boasts a lushly orchestrated score, and is gorgeously designed in often daring color combinations. (For the stylish looking palette and fine-tuned overall detail of this film, I suspect we must thank not only the famous production designers and Ms. Sharaff's oddly chic costumes, but also very much styling consultant Tony Duquette and color consultant Leonard Doss.)
The first thing you see on your screen is a "warning" from Fox that they have used the best materials available for their transfer to DVD. This had me greatly worried for a couple of seconds, but when the credits came up on my screen I was both relieved and stunned. It looked super! Never had I seen "Can-Can" with colors as clean, bright and beautiful as on this disc! But some three minutes into the film I suddenly understood what Fox meant with their note: In many shots throughout the complete running-time, I could notice a certain discreet light-flickering that affected the colors somewhat, especially easy to spot in the darker areas of the image. This is, of course, distracting (at least for a while untill you get used to it), but I should think that Fox had found this problem impossible to correct completely. To my great relief and joy, it is quite obvious that the materials used for this DVD transfer originates from a 70mm negative in Technicolor. All previous transfers to VHS and LaserDisc must surely have used 35mm film in DeLuxe color. The difference is amazing, as the DVD has superb contrast, splendid color and a razor-sharp image all the way, which only 70mm film stock can produce. I suspect that when Fox had to decide between issuing a decent but dull 35mm (CinemaScope) transfer or a dazzling (but very lightly damaged) transfer from Todd-AO elements, they went for the later option. A good choice! Actually, the problematic shots are often very brief, and are mostly followed by longer shots or whole scenes that look picture-perfect. Even well kept negatives can unfortunately detoriate a little with age, and some of the problems that occur can apparently not be 100 percent erased even in our age of digital high tech.
Disc 2 has some well made, newly produced featurettes and lots of other goodies, but even though many highly well researched people are talking "Can-Can" history and memories, none are able to solve a mystery that has often kept me wide awake at nights for 47 years: Why was the most applauded and beloved song from the stage show not included in the finished film version; only heard during the credits and in the Entr'acte? I'm thinking of "I Love Paris"! Film historian Scott McIsaac incorrectly tells us that it is sung in the film by Sinatra and Chevalier. Not so! It is sung by these two gentlemen ONLY on the soundtrack album issued at the time of the film's release - and available on CD for a short time many years ago. But was it actually FILMED, and if so, was it cut out early or after maybe some not entirely happy preview? Can anyone out there explain this weird omission, or better, once and for all present all the facts concerning the rejection of this lovely Cole Porter evergreen?

With its modest special effects, lean plot, and small cast of lesser stars, this 1951 thriller remains a sturdy blueprint for fusing horror and science fiction. The formula has been employed countless times since, fleshed out with more extensive and elaborate production values, and manned by higher profiled marquee names, but the results have yet to improve on The Thing from Another World, Howard Hawks's lone foray into sci-fi.

The story begins as military airmen are dispatched to a remote Arctic research station where scientists have detected the crash of a spacecraft. An effort to retrieve the saucer-shaped vehicle fails, but the team returns to the station with the frozen body of its sole occupant. When the extraterrestrial pilot is accidentally thawed, the crew, headed by a tough-talking pilot (Kenneth Tobey), grapples with a massive, chlorophyll-based humanoid (James Arness) thirsty for blood and in no mood for galactic diplomacy.

Hawks takes only a production credit for this low-budget exercise, but his filmmaking style transcends Christian Nyby's nominal direction: rapid-fire, overlapping dialogue, an ensemble of comrades whose professionalism is tempered by wisecracks, and unsentimental female characters (embodied by feisty romantic interest Margaret Sheridan) recall Hawks's signature works, while propelling the plot over any potential gaps in credibility. It's hardly surprising, then, that The Thing from Another World remains among the most influential science fiction movies ever shot, or that it remains exciting entertainment a half century later. --Sam Sutherland

3 out of 5 stars Make it 3 and a half.......2007-04-11

I love this film- it is well paced and atmospheric and is not afraid to ask difficult questions about the morality of actions. It is, however, very much of its time and that means some wooden acting and ropey special effects - although in general both are of a much higher standard than equivalent productions. It also means some credibility- stretching actions by some of the characters and a rushed finish. It remains amongst the finest sci-fi/horror film ever made though - and whilst the re-make was better - it was not by much.

5 out of 5 stars The Thing from Another World.......2007-03-30

This is the original. The remake is 'The Thing.'
Both movies are great. I suggest that you own both of them and compare.

4 out of 5 stars A classic of its time and genre.......2007-03-30

It was the early 1950's. The military (which, having only a few years previous saved the nation from European fascism) was still held in high esteem and was busily saving the nation from international Communism. The novel and frightening spectre of atomic energy was evident only in the ubiquitous looming threat of "The Bomb" and a lot of people were beginning to wonder if science hadn't gotten out of hand. The possibility of high-tech invasion from afar was never far from the public consciousness.

And then, of course, there were those disturbing reports of strange and elusive aerial objects that evaded our defenses at will and left our armed forces standing flat-footed . . . Everyone was uneasy.

But Hollywood was equal to the challenge.

The motion picture industry's response was a long string of low-budget thrillers aimed chiefly, I think, at the Saturday Matinee crowd but equally appealing to anyone with an imagination. The Saturday early shows would find theatres packed with prepubescents (myself among them) shivering in their boots as a succession of monsters, mutants and extraterrestrial murderers visited mayhem on any civilized enclave larger than a few huts. It was a wonderful time to be a kid.

Some of those productions stretched the credulity even of a ten-year-old, but others were actually well put together, competently directed, and scary as hell even without flashy special effects. "The Thing From Another World" (popularly known just as "The Thing") was among the best of them.

OK - the script didn't call for great depth from the actors, but this was a very plot-driven genre. Film was black and white and so was morality; the characters didn't need to agonize endlessly over their own motivations. In fact they didn't have time to - they'd have been eaten alive by the bad guy if they did. The simplicity of it all is gratifying.

The story in a nutshell: A team of crack Air Force personnel is called to the Arctic to answer a distress call from a group of scientists on a long term project there. The nature of the distress becomes all too evident as the plot unfolds . . . and that's all I'm going to say.

A newer version of this movie was released much later, sometime in the 1980's, I think (or maybe the early 90's?) At any rate, a comparison between the two of them is not appropriate; they are two different genres. In fact, they are two different movies.

If you are one of those poor drudges unimaginative enough to require a visual elucidation of every droop of blood, every spot of gore, then you may not find this movie satisfying. If you are so narrow minded as to be put off by the mores and social customs of a bygone era, sorry, you will probably be too offended to enjoy the show.

But if what you're really interested in is a rollicking good story, then I can hardly offer better advice than that provided by the excited newspaperman reporting the events from that far flung outpost in the snowy north . . .

"Watch the skies! Keep watching the skies!"

And watch this movie, too.

4 out of 5 stars LOVE IT.......2007-02-13

Anyone who likes the old sci-fi and horror films has got to see this one. It was great, suspensful, and wildly entertaining. I mean, how can you beat some bumbling scientists who accidentally unleash an extraterrestrial monster on themselves while they're snowed in in the middle of nowhere? And, of course, you've got the attractive female and male scientist who fall in love. Tha
