British horror/comedy Shaun of the Dead is a scream in all senses of the word. Brain-hungry zombies shamble through the streets of London, but all unambitious electronics salesman Shaun (Simon Pegg) cares about is his girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield), who just dumped him. With the help of his slacker roommate Ed (Nick Frost), Shaun fights his way across town to rescue Liz, but the petty concerns of life keep getting in the way: When they're trying to use vinyl records to decapitate a pair of zombies, Shaun and Ed bicker about which bands deserve preservation--New Order they keep, but Sade becomes a lethal frisbee. Many zombie movies are comedies by accident, but Shaun of the Dead is deliberately and brilliantly funny, while still delivering a few delicious jolts of fear. Also featuring the stealthy comic presence of Bill Nighy (Love Actually) and some familar faces from The Office. --Bret Fetzer

Even better the 3rd time........2007-06-29
I liked the movie a lot when I rented it. After seeing "Hot Fuzz" by the same team, I knew I had to see the movie again. It's just as good as I remember it and I caught new things watching it again. I invited a few friends over to watch it and they liked it too.
English Humor And Zombies! What a Combination!.......2007-06-28
I was never a huge fan of Zombie flicks. George Romero's Night Of The Living Dead scared me so bad when I was eight years old that I didn't sleep for the next decade. So when it comes to the lurching, head-snacking undead, I tend to steer the other way. Well, too many of my friends have commented on Shaun Of The Dead, so I had to take a look for myself. I'm a big fan of dry British humor and Shaun Of The Dead is packed with that as well as flesh-scarfing zombies. The entire scene where Shaun goes to the liquor store to by his morning drink and completely ignores all the signs (the bloody handprints on the glass of the cooler door, the dead bodies sprawled in the yards and streets) that the zombies have come to roost. Hysterical! Along with his slacker cohort Ed, Shaun decides to go over to his mum's house and rescue her, while taking care of his zombie-bitten step-father with a cricket bat. The laughs, entertwined with the gore, make for one trippy movie. Filled with absurd situations, Shaun Of The Dead will have you rolling while you flinch. Great!
Dig it!
A Somewhat Dissenting Opinion.......2007-06-05
Yes. Rent it or buy it. It's not a bad movie, rather entertaining in fact. You know the plot - standard (by now) end of the world flesh eating zombie flick with a double dollop of dry British humor and sufficient gore. Good script. However, I had a few problems with this movie. First off, it's amusing rather than roll on the floor hilarious as others have stated. Secondly, it is extremely derivative of Romero's films - so much so, that I found it both distracting and a little annoying. Simply, Romero did all the heavy lifting laying the groundwork in his initial trilogy, and this film apes rather than adds like 28 Days Later. This one borders on plagiarism. Goes to the well too often with the overly used "loved one is bitten by zombie and now we have to kill it..." cliche. And, while the production values are surprisingly good, the direction is at a banal TV movie level. You've heard this from critics before - "doesn't know what kind of movie it wants to be..." Imagine if Monty Python and the Holy Grail flip-flopped between a silly spoof of the legend of King Arthur and a serious treatment of the mythology like John Boorman's Excalibur. Or, if "Crusher" lops off Curly's head with an ax as The Three Stooges are being chased around haunted mansion, and Moe pauses for a few minutes to tearily weep and grieve the loss of his brother before Crusher sneaks up behind Larry, Moe tells Larry to quit breathing on him, Larry gives his pateneted, "Nyaaaaahh" and they resume woop, woop, wooping in circles around the halls again, stepping over Curly's "corp-us" ; ) to escape Crusher as he weilds his ax.
Entertaining, worth a watch, but to call this derivative work a "homage" is being too kind, it's not as funny as its hype, and it simply flip-flops between horror and comedy to often, too severely, and too jarringly. The direction is also mundane. This one was saved mainly due to its energetic cast and a good script. Still, these criticisms aside, I couldn't say I wasn't entertained.
Shaun of the Dead.......2007-05-30
Consistantly funny, yet amazingly believable, take on a zombie invasion. Characters well drawn and full of subtle details that make rewatching fun.
Shaun of the Dead.......2007-05-28
I originally saw this movie because the previews looked undeniably hilarious. I waited of course until the movie was available to rent because I was cautious regarding the type of humor that might be in the film. I was pleasantly surprised to find the movie wildly entertaining with very little gratuitous humor. This British movies' premise is a spoof of the many American zombie movies (and the single British one), where the main character Sean finds himself battling zombies with presumably his best friend and roommate in order to save his as of recently ex-girlfriend. The mild manner of lead character Sean is ultimately what balances the hilarity of the movie, creating a sense of seriousness on the part of the characters, one which is ultimately the catalyst of humor. It is classic British humor and very enjoyable indeed.

Product Description
This is PAL VIDEO FORMAT (not NTSC and will not play in regular American DVD-player) and an only official release of Larry Clark's "Ken Park" movie on DVD over the world by Russian company "CP Digital". Larry Clark's Ken Park has sent ripples with explicit scenes, and acts, overshadowing other movies on display. The story of four dysfunctional families in the skateboarding hotbed of Visalia, Calif., unspooled in the experimental Upstream competition. "But I didn't want to cut a single frame," the cult film director and photographer told. "All my life I've seen the camera turn away, but these scenes are part of the reality ... of this generation." The film was co-directed by Clark who made the controversial 1995 movie "Kids", renowned cinematographer Ed Lachman, who shot Steven Soderbergh's award-winning "Erin Brockovich" and Todd Haynes' "Far From Heaven". The movie features violence involving not only the restless teenagers in the small town, but also their parents. But Clark says the film is an "uplifting" look at modern youth that shows some of the kids overcoming the odds..."My first film Kids was about the secret world of children, where parents are not allowed. In Ken Park we go inside the houses of four families and meet the parents. Ken Park is the story of children and their parents in Visalia, California, an isolated inland town between Los Angeles and Fresno. The story flows through the lives of three young boys and one girl, all childhood friends, and their parents. The childrens and parents lives are unmasked and you see the ascent of violence, sex, hatred, love and the manic episodes of emotional confusion." - Larry Clark

A perfect look into a teens life..........2007-04-24
I think this person is totally missing the point of Larry Clark and his total body of work. Had you done your homework you would have known that Larry Clark started his career as a photographer. He went underground with a group of kids in the 60' and 70' to photograph how they lived etc. Most were drug addicts and had casual sex (take a look at Tulsa). All of this was boldly documented in Larry's photos. He does not flinch from life as you would seem to have him do. You say that none of these characters are interesting to you. Well would they be if you met them on the street? They are kids. You would ignore them. You have no idea how they live, what they think and what makes them do the things they do. Nor it seems do you care. This is a movie about life. It has not beginning or end, it has not climactic scene, and this is not a Johnny Deep film. Wake up! You may not like Ken Park but despite your shortcomings on understanding film it is and important piece. You should also watch Short Bus. Not buy Clark but an excellent film as well. But watch out it has graphic sex in it. It also has no Disney ending so you might be disappointed with that as well. What did you think of Kids? Gummo? Julian the Donkey Boy? And please list the million other ways in which teenagers can act out their messed up lives. Just a few will do. Do you know any teenagers? Have you talked to them? Guess what. They are lying to you. That is Larry Clark's skill as an artist. His kids tell the truth and some people can't take it, don't understand it or want to ignore it. Where do you belong? I think you should go underground with some homeless kids. Live with them for a year and document what you see. It might just open that closed mind of your and allow you to see what is actually in front of you.
Oh, one other thing, what is this Jerry Springer situation you keep referring to? Were you on the show giving your point of view on this film? If so, I'm sorry I missed it.
Trash movie about life of trashes........2007-03-31
Trash movie about life of trashes. That's all I can say.

Riveting and raw.......2007-01-15
A minor having sex with a hot 35-year-old? WOW. How'd the kid get that job? The scenes were very explicit. I was shocked, wondering how this was legal. It all seemed so real. Aside from the sex, the movie still had an enthralling story. A real look at teen life, a constant clashing with parents. Larry the legend, comes through again.
Hey Larry, how'd the kid get that job?
DID NOT LIKE THIS AT ALL........2006-12-22
THIS " FILM " IS WEIRD. IT NEVER GAINS ANY MOMENTUM, IF YOU ASKED ME WHAT THE POINT WAS...I COULDNT SAY. IT STARTS OUT WITH A TEENAGER BLOWING HIS BRAINS OUT WHICH GOT MY ATTENTION....AND THEN DISAPPOINTED ROYALLY FROM THERE ON. I DONT LIKE TO KNOCK SOMEONE ELSE'S " ART ", BUT THIS MOVIE, TO ME , HAS NO REDEEMING QUALITIES AND HAS NO MORAL OR POINT. I WOULDNT RECOMMEND IT TO AN ENEMY.

The first three Wallace & Gromit shorts are grouped together in a single volume.
A Grand Day Out
Nominated for an Academy Award in 1990, this was the first short-film adventure starring Wallace & Gromit. This 24-minute comedy was created by clay animator Nick Park over a six-year period at the National Film and Television School in London and at the Aardman Animation studios, which Park boosted to international acclaim. In their debut adventure, Wallace and his furry pal Gromit are planning a vacation, but first they've got a crisis to solve: they've got plenty of crackers but no cheese! Undeterred, Wallace comes up with an extreme solution to the cheese shortage: since the moon is made of cheese (we all know that's true, right?), he decides to build a rocket and blast off for a cheesy lunar picnic! Gromit's only too happy to help, and before long the inventive duo is on the moon, where they encounter a clever appliance that's part oven, part robot, part lunar skiing enthusiast... Well, you just have to see the movie to understand how any of this whimsical lunar-cy can make any sense! It's a grand tale of wonderful discoveries, fantastic inventions--and really great cheese!
The Wrong Trousers
Clay-animation master Nick Park deservedly won the 1993 Academy Award for Best Animated Short for this 30-minute masterpiece, in which the good-natured inventor Wallace and his trusty dog, Gromit, return for another grand adventure. It all begins on the morning of Gromit's birthday, when Wallace gives his beloved pooch a rather selfish gift that (to Gromit's chagrin) is more useful to Wallace--a pair of mechanical "techno-trousers" ("ex-NASA," says Wallace, duly impressed) that can be programmed to take Gromit out for "walkies" while Wallace sits comfortably at home. Gromit's not exactly thrilled with the new gadget, and things go from bad to worse when Wallace rents a room to a new boarder--a rather suspicious-looking penguin--to offset his rising expenses. As it turns out, the penguin's a notorious thief, and the amazing techno-trousers provide a foolproof method of pulling off a diamond heist! It's Gromit's big opportunity for canine heroics, and The Wrong Trousers turns into one of the funniest, most inventive caper-comedies ever made, with an action-packed climax on a speeding miniature train. Will the notorious "Feathers" wind up in jail, where he belongs? Will Gromit finally get his due recognition? Watch this amazing marvel of clay animation to see why Wallace & Gromit have become global celebrities--this is comedic ingenuity at its finest.
A Close Shave
Hot from the international triumph of The Wrong Trousers, clay animator Nick Park knew that his third Wallace & Gromit film was going to have to be the biggest and best adventure yet for the mild-mannered inventor Wallace and his perceptive pooch, Gromit. With the ambitiously zany plot of A Close Shave, Park and his fellow animators rose to the occasion, and their film won the 1995 Academy Award (Park's second Oscar) for Best Animated Short. This time out, Wallace & Gromit have teamed up to provide a window-washing service, and that's how Wallace meets the lovely Wendolene Ramsbottom, a wool-shop owner whose malevolent dog, Preston, turns out to be the mastermind of a sheep-napping scheme! Of course, no Wallace & Gromit adventure can be without a grandiose gadget, so Wallace's latest invention is the Knit-O-Matic, a yarn-making machine capable of shearing a whole flock of sheep just a bit too efficiently! When the villainous Preston gains control of the mechanical knitting marvel, Gromit must race to the rescue, and A Close Shave reaches new heights of clay-animation mastery. Every shot is a testament to Nick Park's patience, his clever ingenuity, and his filmmaking flair. The movie's so technically impressive, in fact, that the whole world wondered where Park could go next. It was clear that Wallace & Gromit would eventually star in an animated feature-length movie, since this marvelous 30-minute film represents its own kind of short-form perfection. --Jeff Shannon

Not too cheesy!.......2007-05-16
These early Wallace and Gromit shorts have an old-fashioned claymation charm. The first film in particular looks a little rough. Wallace and Gromit (the silent but extremely expressive dog) are very charming characters, indeed! Wallace has an obsession with cheese and with building machines to perform the most mundane chores. The plots are very clever and bizarre, from vacationing on the moon (to sample the cheese, of course) to inventing a pair of mechanical trousers to walk a dog, only to find that a shady new boarder (a silent and sinister penguin, of course) has a clever criminal use for them. The stories are full of delightful surprises and punny humor. It's fascinating to watch the making-of clips to see how painstakingly these films are put together. It gave me an appreciation of these films as truly an art, from the hand-painted sets to the classic film stylings. One of my favorite features of the DVD is a series of minute-long shorts featuring Wallace's many overly complicated inventions, bizarre and very funny! The creator of the characters apparently loved inventions himself, and animation allows him to "invent" the impossible and make it work. Overall, very charming movies/DVD. I did see "Curse of the Were-Rabbit" first which I love, so in comparison to that perfect little piece of cinema, I only give 4 stars out of 5. My 3 1/2 daughters love these films, by the way, especially Gromit and the little touches of slapstick.

As the title says the incredible adventures of Wallace and Gromit. This is a fun show for the whole family, plus it keeps the small children entertained and happy.

Excellent short stories of Wallace and Gromit.......2007-03-11
This DVD contains 3 short stories of Wallace and Gromit plus a series of about 10, 2 minute skits. All are from years before the Wallace and Gromit movies and while they are not as "polished" as the movie, they are just as good. Two of the short are excellent, while one, the first one, it not up to the same standard but still good. The short skits are very funny. Great for kids when you don't have time for a full movie.

A Human Interest and Spirituality Movie.......2007-01-04
The Spiritual aspect of this movie is admirable. However, the movie is quite disjointed and a bit difficult to follow. It probably would have been better to have one story, with maybe one sub-story instead of three different stories going all at once. Still, with all the movies that show African Americans as either criminals or comedic, it is refreshing to see them depicted in this movie very realistically. Even the shaman seems believable. [He was the black man on trial in 'To Kill a Mockingbird' many years ago.] A few used foul language, but most didn't. I won't tell you how the movie ends, but Christians will appreciate that it is shown as a real answer to prayers.
Excellent urban film!.......2005-02-23
At first glance of the dvd cover I thought this movie was just another urban drama consumed by stereotypes about African American life.
However, I found the presentation of the story and characters to be quite refreshing in a sea full of sketchy urban films. The story is universal, and the characters are complex.
Hill Harper and Monica Calhoun both give great performances. They both capture the true essence of the characters unfulfilled dreams, and you sympathize with them, or you can relate to them because they are playing someone you may know.
Even though the explaination of,"Park Day" is not clear, and the ending leaves something to be desired this movie is a winner. This one will be watched again, and I suggest anyone who's stuck in life to take a look at this film. I will certainly pass this movie along to friends and family members who's lost their way.
this is a great one.......2004-11-20
this movie isn't the sort of movie you really understand the first time. it is thought-provoking and even though it jumps around a little, it has a very good story. i like all of the different themes that are brought into this movie. and despite the serious tone it seems to carry, there are many points of good humor thrown in. i would recommend this to pretty much anyone who has always wanted more for their lives, but we're just afraid to get it. this is an inspiring film once you reflect on its meanings. if you haven't seen this, you should.

Product Description
Australia released, PAL/Region 4 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada. Languages:
o English (Dolby Digital 2.0) Synopsis: A spinster goes to extraordinary lengths to assuage her loneliness in Robert Altman's 1969 drama. Wealthy Frances Austen (Sandy Dennis) conducts herself as if she were older than she actually is, but when she spies a blond youth (Michael Burns) sitting alone in a rain-swept Vancouver park, she takes him to her apartment. Apparently mute, the boy accepts Frances's ministrations, content to have a bed of his own and to listen to her talk, even if he has to come and go through his window after she locks his bedroom door at night. But when he leaves his bed empty on the night that Frances attempts to seduce him, the boy soon learns who is in control of their relationship and how far Frances will go to keep it that way. This film began Altman's 1970s effort to experiment with established movie genres: in this case, the Gothic thriller. Making the most of Frances's creepy apartment, cinematographer Laszlo Kovacs zooms in to symbolic details of Frances's life and zooms out to reveal her unnerving isolation in her own space. Altman maintains an awareness of the world outside Frances and the boy through mobile visuals and snippets of other conversations whenever either is in public, signaling the emphasis on the periphery that marked his future films, while underlining Frances's and the boy's estrangement from "normal" life. Master music by Johnny Mandel.......2006-03-27
They play the main theme along with the film openning credits.
What a theme with an extraordinary melody by Mandel.
A great film, a great drama by Altman, always smart.
Music is as nervous as spectacular Sandy Dennis role in her intent to catch love from the boy.
Refer to the story in the Amazon review guidelines.
Unfortunately film and soundtrack are unavailable for USA fans.
This Australian edition plays only in certain countries labeled world DVD area 4 and color standard is not NTSC as in the USA.
The same film's main theme was recorded by Quincy Jones in his 'Walking in Space' album under the title 'I Never Told You'. Beautiful melody.

Description
Winner of the Best Cinematography Award at the Sundance Film Festival, COLOR OF A BRISK AND LEAPING DAY is a boldly atmospheric and subtly complex historical drama from indie auteur Christopher Münch (The Sleepy Time Gal). It tells the story of John Lee, grandson to a Chinese railroad laborer, who holds idealistic visions of saving a Yosemite Valley short-line train from bankruptcy, with help from long-time rail employees (Michael Stipe of R.E.M. and Henry Gibson of Magnolia)
Customer Reviews:
Terrible Film.......2007-05-29
This was terrible. It was recommended as good for someone who loves trains but my husband, who is a train enthusiast, hated it as well. The story is slow and never gets interesting and the acting is terrible. Gives whole new meaning to "low budget film" I do not recommend this at all.

Santana's hot rhythm section (Karl Perazzo & Raul Rekow) is featured in this new DVD as they showcase their individual playing styles through killer performances and solos from their first solo CD of the same title. Includes special guest appearances by Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez, Paquito Hechavarria and more.
Customer Reviews:
Very good DVD, totally worth it!.......2006-09-26
Wow! What a great DVD! Some great percussion performances from three great players. A nice bonus section where they break down what they are playing. The best part is watching great musicians play some really cool music that you don't get to hear very often. I am still not sure what all the various rhythms were that they were playing but it was sure fun to watch and listen.
Two of the Best Percussionists Around!.......2006-07-07
For anyone not familiar with Karl Perazzo and Raul Rekow, they are the super-hot, super-talented and super-natural percussionists currently working with Santana...and these guys really shine on this wonderful DVD. Although this cannot be considered a concert DVD(it was shot at a studio with no audience), it is equal parts of exciting ensemble music, burning solos and instructional material. The whole band plays with much inspiration and passion, but the real stars of this production are the guys "hitting" things. I had actually seen other footage of Karl and Raul, along with seeing them live with Santana, but I hadn't grasped how talented these men were! I literally sat through this DVD with a smile glued to my face---totally amazed with the facility of each player. It is quite apparent that Karl and Raul have spent a "lifetime" studying the 'Masters' and developing their own styles, while still remaining authentic to the roots and heritage associated with Latin music. And the drummer...WOW! Horacio 'El Negro' Hernandez is "other-worldly" with some of the amazing techniques seen here---he is also credited within the drumming community as being THE drummer who introduced the left-foot Clave pattern to the States. I can't think of a better drummer they could have gotten to accompany their 'Vision' for this production. Besides all the percussionists taking extended "mind-blowing" solos throughout, they briefly explain and breakdown exactly what(and why) each played during certain passages/solos. Lastly, although this DVD will certainly Thrill percussionists and drummers alike...you certainly don't have to be one to thoroughly enjoy this(just an appreciation for Good music executed by Great players). On the back of the DVD case, these guys explain how they are perpetual "students" of the art...well this release proves they are well on their way to 'Master' status! Strongly recommended along with Santana's 'Sacred Fire' DVD to see these explosive players in action.
