Sure, Street Trash has a convoluted, ridiculous plot, but it also features bums who melt into rainbow sludge upon drinking a fermented relative of Thunderbird, Tenafly Viper. In this '80s B-movie akin to The Toxic Avenger or C.H.U.D., Fred (Mike Lackey) is the main homeless guy who distributes Viper he's lifted from the local liquor store. Once he discovers the alcohol's lethal potential, he wields it as a weapon, eventually fighting head criminal, Bronson, a psycho-killer Vietnam vet who carries a human femur bone handle knife. Side plots, such as one involving a begrudging policeman who seeks to clean up the Street Trash community housed in a junkyard, or the one featuring Wendy, the hot girl who guards runaways from the junkyard's fat, mean owner, are beside the point. Watch Street Trash for its infamous penis scene, in which a member is chopped off and tossed around in a game of keep away, or watch the film to see a man melt down into a blue pile as he's flushed down a toilet bowl. Street Trash's gore isn't so disturbing as it is comic, as are the bums' New Romantic costumes similar to Dexy's Midnight Runners in the video for their '80s hit, "Come On Eileen." Applaud Street Trash for its gaudy, horrendous splendor. Notably, this re-release contains the original Super-8 short of the film, featuring even more homemade special effects and low-grade humor.--Trinie Dalton

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite.......2007-06-16

Street Trash has got to be the best movie I've seen in a long time. It's cheesy, gory, and funny. The fx in this movie are great also. I mean a bottle of booze that makes people explode? How could you not enjoy this movie!?

5 out of 5 stars "What's The Matter? Can't Hold Yer Liquor?".......2007-04-26

In just the first two minutes of the awesomely awful Street Trash, we are treated to instances of bad acting, shaky editing, implausible plot, garish title credits, and horribly hokey, electronic music. And none of it matters, because Street Trash is the most unapologetically glorious and ghoulish film the good folks at Troma never made (but probably wish they did).

With a diabolical sense of humor and hilariously hard-boiled (and highly quotable) dialog, Street Trash is also quite possibly the dirtiest movie ever made - and I'm talking about dirt in the "dug out of the earth" sense, not dirty in a sexual sense (although there is a bunch of nudity, a dash of necrophilia, and a touch of wiener-tossing for good (or bad) measure (the last of which brings a more literal meaning to the word "dismemberment")).

Featuring fantastic sets (including quite possibly the greatest junkyard hideout in cinematic history) and authentic Skid Row New York locations, the grime is so gratuitously applied and supplied to places and faces that some of the actors' lips seem glow-in-the-dark bright by comparison. The grossout effects are also surprisingly good for such a low budget filth fest (they were realistic enough to make me cringe, anyway). For sure, a lot of this film's fun comes from watching each person having their, shall we say, colorful meltdowns...

Street Trash features the first work of such eventual cinematic luminaries as Jim Muro, the cinematographer of Crash (as well as The Last Mimzy!) and X-Men and Usual Suspects director Bryan Singer. Equally notable is James Lorinz' hysterical first acting outing as the outrageously disrespectful doorman. Plus one of the greatest end credits songs of all time, performed by Sopranos' stalwart Tony Darrow.

Stay away from this film if you're weak of stomach, but definitely feel free to use this delightful piece of cinematic grotesquery as a dieting aid, as this movie will do such a good job of making you lose your appetite that you'll be looking for it for days! Ultimately, I think the best indication of the raunchy, sleazy ride you're in for with this flick is expressed by one of the last acknowledgements in the end credits, which reads: "Thanks, Anita, for taking me to see 'I Drink Your Blood' when I was six."

Yup, that about sums it up. Thanks, Anita!

1 out of 5 stars Can't Believe I bought this.......2007-04-17

Folks, if you haven't bought this movie or even seen this movie yet, do not, I repeat, do not waste your time. The movie was more of a comedy than it was horror, and the use of paint for "melting bodies" was atrocious. I can't believe I wasted my money on this garbage. The title of the movie fits it well, at least the "trash" part does. Don't purchase this movie if you value your hard-earned dollar. You were warned. I can't believe that out of 33 reviews, this movie only got two negative reviews. That just goes to show that our culture will watch anything and call it entertainment. Wow, some people are so easily satisfied when it comes to visual and plot entertainment. Not me... I wouldn't have even given this one-star if it hadn't been required in order to post a critique. This movie was worse than awful.

5 out of 5 stars wat a trip!!.......2007-04-11

man dis movie is off da hook. one of tha trippiest movies i've ever seen. get intoxicated & watch this. great horror/comedy. i reccomend this to anyone who likez cheesy old school flicks. itz awesome. a must have for any horror/comedy fan

3 out of 5 stars Ass Clown.......2007-03-29

Street Trash has a lot of hype. and for good reason. lots of great over the top effects and explosions. some good toilet humor and a great nuts bad guy. drags on at parts, the ending is too quick, but if you like dirty hobo's, farts, and melting faces (and who the hell doesn't), then this is a must.

Michael Addis once again presents the audience with entertainment like no other. PWT, finally a dvd worth buying. The storyline is riveting, unlike most of the trash that floods your local Blockbuster. Do yourself a favor, don't listen to these tools who criticized it like they've never left their mothers basement. They obviously don't know what they're talking about!... This movie f-ing rocks, so check out this movie, yeah. It's worth it. =]

4 out of 5 stars Painfully Funny.......2005-09-23

Saw this once on video and couldn't wait to buy the DVD. It's the kind of comedy like the work of Christopher Guest where the characters seem painfully real. I recommend this to anyone who appreciates off-the-wall slightly depraved humor.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Kick This 'Trash' to the Curb..........2004-11-22

Once upon a time in a trailer park to close to say lived two boys who are bored and decide to score some 'Near Beer" from the local quickie mart. This turns bad and the two are arrested. They meet the grandfather attorney who gets them off.. for a price. A chain reaction of hillarity insues. Sean Young is effective as the white trash mother who will do anything to make sure her son gets into college, and doesn't have to live in a trailer the rest of his life. Not as stupid as it appears to be. The screenplay is smart, even with such lines as "You're hot as doughnut grease, babe." That line is a gem. Bound to be a redneck classic, Jeff Foxworthy would be proud. The only thing missing was Jerry Springer.

From the moment I first saw this film, I was drawn in to it. The entire film is hilarious and each and every time I see it ( and I have seen it over and over)I find yet another bit of hilariously hidden gems, whether it's the scenary, the great looks of the characters or the witty lines, you can easily miss, while in the middle of laughing at something else.
Once, when I watched this film with my best friend, we rewound the same scene over and over again, laughing harder and harder each time!!!
Take a chance and you will be so glad you did!!! BUT POP YOUR POPCORN AHEAD OF TIME YOU WON'T WANT TO LEAVE THE TV!

3 out of 5 stars Lots of Problems but Lots of Laughs.......2003-07-01

Welcome to Sunrise, Illinois, a town that plays host to a significant contingent of lower class, trailer dwelling, criminally prone hillbilly types loving referred to as "Poor White Trash." Starring such recognizable names as William Devane, Sean Young, and Jaime Pressly, the film focuses on the antics of the Bronco and Lake families, with several other individuals floating around on the periphery. Linda Bronco, played quite well by Sean Young, only has one wish in her miserable existence of one night stands and fly by night jobs: she wants her son Michael to go to college at the University of Southern Illinois to major in psychology. After yet another fight with her washed out professional wrestler husband, Linda must step in and take control of Michael's life if her dream is to be realized. Regrettably for Linda, Michael and his friend Lenny Lake find themselves in a heap of trouble after swiping a six-pack of near beer at the local convenience store. This thoughtless action throws Michael's plans for school into turmoil, thereby requiring Linda to lead her son and his friend on a robbing spree for tuition money and enough scratch to hire a decent lawyer to fight the robbery charge. Along for the ride is Brian, the son of the local sheriff who Linda picked up in a bar and who now wishes to take part in the antics.

To disentangle her son from the robbery charge, Linda and her son turn to Lenny Lake's grandfather, Ron Lake. The elder Lake is a strange character, a one-time felon who now works as a big shot lawyer. Ron just married the gorgeous but dangerous Sandy, and the two live in Ron's trailer adorned with a garden of sculptures made out of beer cans. Ron is as crooked as they come, though, and to get his help Linda and her trio of would be criminals must agree to split their take with Ron and his wife. Everything goes down the drain from this point, as the four rob a retirement home and a local eating establishment. They get the money, but they get double crossed too, an incident which leads to hilarious trailer trash retribution involving trailer stealing, fireworks, automatic weapons, and duct tape.

There are more problems with "Poor White Trash" than there are pluses. The organization of the film is a disaster, with scenes that run too long, sloppy camera work, and a script often bogged down with too much detritus. What this movie desperately needed was an excellent editor, someone to go through the scenes and cut out all the awkward dead weight. About half way into the movie, I started to suspect that somebody, maybe a studio, mucked around with the finished product and left us with a movie that is more often a hodgepodge of scenes than a seamless film. Another big minus here, at least for me, was the relegation of Danielle Harris to a minor role as Suzi (the one with an "i"), an employee at the local restaurant robbed by Bronco and company. Harris, who in my opinion could never appear in enough films, gets marginal screen time. At least we get one good shot of her smiling face, and I guess that is better than nothing.

Despite these problems, "Poor White Trash" works on many levels, and works spectacularly. I would be completely insane if I did not mention the stellar performance of William Devane as Ron Lake. I have never liked Devane as an actor, probably due to his appearance in too many of those unctuous "movie of the week" productions. But here he shines like the sun. Devane has all of the best lines of the film, none of which are reproducible here because they usually deal with romantic entanglements in prison. His outfits are hilarious, his law office, located in a mall, bears the name "Land o' Law," and his philosophy about beautiful women is a scream. Devane chews the scenery in this film and it is a better movie because of it. Devane's role along with numerous effective sight gags, helps propel "Poor White Trash" to easily watchable levels.

The DVD throws in a commentary by Sean Young and director Michael Addis, as well as some production stills, three trailers for three obscure films I never heard of, and cast and crew profiles. Add in these extras with the actual film, and you have yourself an effective way to burn a few hours. "Poor White Trash" will never win any awards, but it ultimately delivers with good performances and some good gags.

    Description

An icon of the Andy Warhol Factory and one of the most famous figures of the late 1960s and 1970s, Joe Dallesandro shot to fame in this landmark trilogy of underground filmmaking from acclaimed director Paul Morrissey. Raw, charismatic, and unabashed, his performances anchor these unflinching and often hilarious looks at life on the streets where hustling, conning, shooting up, loving, and bickering make up every memorable day.

In Flesh, Joe stars as a dim and sweet-natured hustler who journeys from one client to the next in a quirky odyssey that goes from the clutches of an amorous artist to a pair of beauties including a young Patti D'Arbanville.

In Trash, Joe struggles to provide a living for his demanding girlfriend (Warhol favorite Holly Woodlawn), crossing back and forth between the gutter and the high life in a quest for happiness.

Then Joe hits Los Angeles as an unemployed former child star in Heat, a fast and funny look at fleeting fame where an affair with fallen star Sylvia Miles (Midnight Cowboy) results in hilarious complications.

Now restored and remastered with all-new extras, these masterworks of true independent cinema burn brighter than ever in these sensational new special editions, with an exclusive fourth bonus disc of additional extras!

4 out of 5 stars TREND SETTING LOW BUDGET CINEMA.......2007-06-05

Paul Morrissey was Andy Warhol's resident in house filmmaker and prime mover on his non art related activities, as The Vevet Underground's John Cale said "Paul was the muscle-he made things happen.." His films were the most successful to appear under the Warhol moniker and launched Joe Dellasandro as an international sex symbol and pop culture icon.

The doco 'Factory Days' is a fascinating look back at Morrissey's time with Warhol. It's full of never before seen photo's and entertaining anecdotes and info. Much has been said of the filmmakers bitterness and distancing of himself from Warhol over the years, and it's hinted at in the by the cumugeonly New Yorker's narration, But it's still a must see for Warhol fans.

    5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-05-12

For a fan of the Factory-era works of the artists of the Warhol Underground this is a great item. The movies all speak for themselves and to Paul Morrissey's avant-garde(for its time) film-making. They also speak to Joe Dallesandro's talent for getting points across with little dialogue and mostly action.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Paul Morrissey.......2007-04-04

These films are classics of the Paul Morrissey/Andy Warhol era. A great set. Get them before they go out of print again!

1 out of 5 stars Let the buyer beware.......2007-03-09

Perhaps I should have done some research before I bought the 4 disc set, but I was surprised to find these to be so disappointing. I had read Holly Woodlawn's book, "A Low Life in High Heels", and thought I would get more of a feel for all of the book's hype about Paul Morrissey and Andy Warhol and the movies they made. I just didn't know what I was getting. I wasn't misled by anyone. I suppose if you are a cult fan of PM & AW, you should have these for your collection. I'll make you a really good deal.

Independent producer and author John Pierson (Spike, Mike, Slackers and Dykes) defines the 1970s American indie scene as "the three Johns: John Cassavetes, John Sayles, and John Waters." John Waters, Baltimore's king of sleaze, in such classy company? According to Pierson in this 1998 documentary, Waters had an even more profound impact on American cinema. Director Steve Yeager, a Waters intimate for decades (he plays a bit part in Pink Flamingos), gathers the surviving members of his stock company for a portrait of the director, from backyard puppet show impresario to the transgressive underground and exploitation director who grossed out America in the 1970s. A generous array of film clips is enriched with archival interviews with Divine, David Lochary, and Edith Massey, and a chorus of film critics and underground and independent directors.

Fully half of the film chronicles the making of Pink Flamingos, with actual behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot (including the most priceless direction ever captured on film: "David, act some more"). A plentiful portion pays tribute to Divine ("the Godzilla of drag queens"), whom Waters calls "my Elizabeth Taylor." The only real disappointment in this rich and highly entertaining documentary is that it ends with Flamingos, as if his entire career since is a mere coda to this cultural touchstone. But this portrait is so rich and detailed that it's a forgivable directorial choice. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars The "Brain" behind the "Beauty!".......2007-04-14

All freaks and weird people have experienced, by now, the absolute beauty and glamor if the 300 lb monstrosity, "Divine!" But what kind of Frankenstein could have created "HIr?" This little movie provides the answer!

Of course, the answer is: the deliciously hillarious perverted mind of John Waters! William S. Burroughs coined him as "The Pope Of Trash!" Yet Waters was raised normally in an upper class Baltimore family! Is it his fault that he became as a child obsessed with car accidents, trials of murderers and sleasy "B" movies? How could such environmental influences create the most tastefully outrageous antics depicted in his earlier films? This movie provides the answer!

There is a difference between mere shocking bad taste and bad taste that is so good that it generates a cult following! Here we see the delicious Divine give interviews that are as shocking as HIr films! We see the deliciously ugly Edith Massey glory in her new roles of glamor and stardom in John's movies. We see the hours and hours of rehearsals that Divine and the Dreamlanders did in front of the perfectionist Waters' cameras. There was a lot of work and planning that went on in even the most notorious scene of "Pink Flamingos:" the infamous Dog-Spoor scene!

John Waters.... we all await the day that you can once again release the tiger in you that created your early works! We all are getting too old to be "pattycaked" by your newer works! SHOCK US AGAIN!

5 out of 5 stars Behind the Greatest Movie Ever Made.......2006-10-30

If your mind withstood "Pink Flamingoes", this is the movie for you. More than you ever wanted to know about John Waters and Divine (Peace Be Unto Him/Her).

5 out of 5 stars DIVINE Trash is another mans treasure.......2005-10-02

This is a gr8 documentary on John Waters & DIVINE. Very informative & well put together. Talks about how John got his start in his insane flicks, has a mini interview with Edith Massey, behind the scenes footage & of course this DVD would not be complete without "DIVINE". DIVINE Trash is simply the best garbage i've seen in years. Loaded with unseen video footage & surprises. DIVINE Trash is a MUST 4 any Waters/DIVINE fan. Check it out, U won't regret it!! 5 out of 5 stars Yeager is genius.......2005-06-29

I am a growing film maker, and currently belong to a film session, that is directed by this film's director, Mr. Steve Yeager, and he is a good friend of mine. All I'd like to say is that this movie is a great documentary, and if you havent seen it yet, i highly consider it. Steve also mentioned to me that it won "best documentary" in 1998 for the Maryland Film Fest. Pretty impressive! I also think that it is a great film that basically tells the story of the Baltimore-native film maker, John Waters. It includes so great early footage when John's film making was beginning to spark. Interviews with Water's parents, Steve Buschemi, and many more. Mr yeager is a great man, and this documentary is a great film.

5 out of 5 stars A deep meditation on the nature of success.......2004-04-14

First let me say how pleased I was to find this DVD at my local public library!

From there I will go on to say what an impressive piece of work this is. Having long been a fan of the movie Hairspray, which raised my curiosity about Divine in the first place, a natural progression enabled my curiosity about John Waters. This is primarily his story, the story of his work, with plenty of interview time with him. What an intriguing individual! What a creative time and place he lived in! How fortunate for all freedom loving Americans that such explorations were possible in that time and place. I doubt they could ever happen today.

True, the films do seem to be in questionable taste, with little, if any, socially redeeming value. But look closer, and you may find your own reflection. What is the value of shock value? What are its drawbacks? What have we gained? What have we lost?

John Waters was not shallow, nor was he untintelligent. He was creatively inspired, and no matter how we react to his work, react we do. Such is the nature of art.

I feel like I got to know the man just a little, which is exactly what I wanted to do. I understood a little more about his work, and its success. Do I approve? I still don't know, but I do know that whether I approve or not doesn't matter.

I do approve of freedom. I believe that no one was hurt, and that violence was not empowered through the message, which makes many of today's movies filthy in comparison.

John Waters is an interesting individual. It would have been intruging to have been in his entourage. One could not have escaped coming out a changed individual. He created a cocoon, a chrysalis, where larvae were nurtured and outrageous butterflies emerged. They loved what they were doing, and they were successful.

If nothing else, it is a deep meditation on the nature of success in a country that considers it a superior export.

      Product Description

A possible prelude to Natural Born Killers, Andy Warhols Bad is as low as it goes. Hazel runs a beauty salon out of her house, but makes extra money by providing ruthless women to do hit jobs. K.T. is a parasite, and contacts Hazel looking for work when he runs out of money. She is reluctant to use him for a hit, since she prefers using women, but decides to try him on a trial basis. Meanwhile, the local cop she pays off wants an arrest to make it look like he's actually doing his job, but she doesn't want to sacrifice any of her "associates." Several other side plots are woven in, populated with characters from the sleazy side of life.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie, DVD quality is fine........2006-07-18

Since most reviews here are negative towards the CheesyFlicks edition of Andy Warhol's Bad and not the content of the film, I thought I should chime-in to say that the quality is just fine. This is an underground movie and has an underground movie "look." The quality is acceptable and looks better than the VHS editions out there.

I also did not experience any technical difficulties with this DVD, nor did I have any delays in service from the seller "CheeezyFlicks." I'm grateful to finally have this film on DVD.

4 out of 5 stars I needed this in my library... the other reviews are WRONG!.......2006-02-25

Okay, I have to say that I am a true believer in the fact that there is a time and a place for films in bad taste that taste good. I saw this movie in 1985 and even then it was hard to come by. But I have never laughed as hard as when the lady threw the...oops, almost gave up a punchline.

I read the other reviews regarding the sound and transfer of this sick gem and for the last 8 months I hesitated... but last week I took the chance and ordered it. I AM VERY HAPPY I DID! This film wasn't in Cinemascope to begin with. It had a relatively low budget as well. What did these folks want?

I will say this. The transfer on MY copy was identical to the release I originally saw.
The sound was equally identical. Have any of these people seen any of John Water's films pre-POLYESTER? I think not. They're probably REALLY proud to have seen HAIRSPRAY upon it's original release. They must think that THAT makes them really "cutting edge".

Now granted, Cheezy Films may have gone in and done some fix-it work if they received enough returns and/or complaints. If so then at least they got the hint and corrected their mistakes.

Let me sum it up like this....

If you know this movie, and need to own it... you'll get exactly the film you have in your mind's eye.

If you are a fan of films like FEMALE TROUBLE or THE FORBIDDEN ZONE... you're gonna LOVE THIS.

Carroll Baker is Awesome! SuSu (Susan tyrrell) is unforgetable. Brigid Polk (Berlin) is in a class all by herself. If you adore "CIAO MANHATTAN" then you REALLY should order up a serving of "BAD" chow... it taste's so good! Then take a Howard Hughes sponge bath!

1 out of 5 stars Bad Movie & Bad Transfer.......2005-10-29

I will go a step further from the other reviewers and state that not only is this a bad DVD transfer but also a bad film. I have no problem with dark humor but a little irony would be helpful. The acting, direction, and writing here are strictly amateur hour. When the high point of a film is Susan Tyrrell's account of a depressive welfare mom then you are in trouble. As for the aforementioned problems with the images breaking down at the film's midway point and then stopping altogether it's all true. Don't waste your time or money on this DVD because it's not worth the aggravation. Cheezy Video, indeed!

I originally saw this movie at my colleges student union hall in 1977 and loved it.As cult movie fan I always wanted to own it and was very happy to find and purchase a dvd version on Amazon in early Dec.04.However,3 defective dvds later(shipping the first 2 back at my own expense),and numerous unanswered emails. It's now Mar.05.Thank you Amazon for refunding my purchase. One reviewer suggested that Cheezy Flicks is missing a quality control dept,I feel they may be lacking a cutomer service dept as well.Buyers please check the feedback on this seller before you make a purchase.Once again this is a great movie and I would love to see a vialbe dvd version available.

1 out of 5 stars Great Movie - Garbage DVD.......2005-01-29

These DVDs are corrupted and do not play properly. I received the first defective DVD on Fri, 14 Jan 2005 and contacted the Seller. The Seller told me I needed to return the defective DVD before they would ship a replacement. I noticed on the Amazon merchant reviews that several people have had this same problem and I asked the Seller if they did indeed have copies which worked. They promised that they did have working DVDs and that they would ship one as soon as they received the defective DVD. Reluctantly I spent an additional $3 to ship the DVD back to the Seller. Today (Fri, 28 Jan 2005) I received the replacement DVD. This DVD is also defective with the identical manufacturing flaws. Evidentially Cheezy Flicks has no QC department to check their products. The DVD is quite obviously a bootleg/DVD-R copy of a worn out VHS tape. We play DVD-R's quite frequently on both our DVD systems, so it isn't a compatibility issue. The DVD will not load automatically when placed in the machine. When inserted into the machine, the DVD freezes and the number "9" appears on the DVD player. After pressing Play many times, the menu eventually appears. We were able to play the movie about 2/3 of the way through but there were constant pixilation and corruption problems all the way through. Then around Chapter 10 the DVD stops completely. Also, none of the other options on the menu work. For example, pressing "Other titles offered by Cheezy Flicks" causes the DVD to stop. The DVD and the replacement were both defective. Wait for the legitimate release. Don't waste your money on these.

This 1968 production from Andy Warhol's Factory found director Paul Morrissey still defining his style and particularly open to Warhol's own process of shooting extended takes with minimal editing. Factory star Joe Dallesandro plays a hustler working to earn money for his wife's girlfriend's abortion. The long trail of transvestites, drugs, and debauchery doesn't just drag a viewer down but rather adds up to a kind of transcendent curiosity about itself. Intelligent, well-constructed, and at times lyrical, this is one of the best of the Morrissey-Warhol collaborations. The cast includes a couple of actors in Warhol's orbit who later broke into mainstream movies and television, including Patti D'Arbanville. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Stange but fun movie.......2006-11-03

Flesh is a strange but fun movie. It's a product of it's time and very charming. If you are a Joe Dallesandro fan it's a must. Lot's of him running around nude.

4 out of 5 stars Dallesandro Has A Beautiful Smile - Who Knew?.......2006-08-11

All I can say is, wow! Blame it on my having watched the Dallesandro movies in "reverse" - having viewed Blood for Dracula and Flesh for Frankenstein, I was prepared for another stone-faced portrayal by Dallesandro...the perpetual sneer worn over the rigid, blank expression that was Dallesandro's "trademark" in both films. Instead I was blown away by a fresh faced boy, with a beautiful smile, expressive face and dancing eyes. WOW! This film is a must for any Dallesandro fan.

The quality of the film is grainy, the sound is equally grainy and a little jumpy- but once you get used to these deficiencies, you quickly get caught up in the story. And I use the term "story" loosely since, from what I understand, the entire thing was shot without a script - allowing the actors to simply ad-lib. Be that as it may, the story line unfolds in a fascinating manner.

Once again, I was disappointed to find no commentary or interview with Dallesandro was included in the special features. Instead you get a commentary with Morrrissey that's only slightly interesting. I highly question his assertion that he was making some grand statement with this movie. I think that now, he wants to looks back in history and pull a grand statement from, what was then, only meant as entertainment. But then I've always found Morrissey to be a little egotistical. (Besides which, I think Morrissey should be kicked for turning Dallesandro into that stone-faced actor who wasn't allowed to smile.)

People should know that while this is by no means pornography, graphic male nudity makes this unsuitable for young viewers.

      4 out of 5 stars Flesh.......2006-03-15

Joe Delesandro is great in this Andy Warhol movie. I watch it over and over. Not your ordinary theater movie.

5 out of 5 stars Warhol Produced, Morrissey Directed.......2006-01-01

Some reviewers are clearly unaware of the backstory to this film. Andy Warhol only participated in this film and those produced after it has Producer. Warhol only was only involved with the stars who were close friends, such as Candy Darling. Of course it is very easy to understand why; this film was shot only weeks after Andy was nearly murdered by SCUM founder Valerie Solanas (Salonas only starred in one of the infamous Audition reels, and had a brief role in I, a Man so I don't think she's deserving of the title Star). The closest that Andy ever came to directing after the incident was fueling the tension between his three Beauty Queens in Women in Revolt over the phone.
But making Joe a Street Hustler was Andy's idea. Andy was greatly dissapointed that the film Midnight Cowboy became so successful, he felt that it stole its plot from his film My Hustler starring Paul America. Joes original profession in this film was a Boxer, but Andy remembered hearing Joe talk about his days working the streets and asked Morrissey to make the change.
The Plot Synopsis that Amazon has given is inaccurate, Joe and his Wife are not Junkies. The real reason he is trying to earn money that day is to pay for his Wifes lovers abortion. You following me?
Flesh is best remembered for pushing the boundaries of male full-frontal nudity, but it has a great story to. The most obvious problem that I think people will encounter is the in-camera editing. This editing style gives a flash effect that does become a bit annoying, but it was done by Morrissey to reming the audience that they are only watching a film and probably to make them annoyed because you end up missing entire conversations. Also there are entire sequences done with no dialogue, and there is really no musical soundtrack to accompany the film.
My favorite part of the film is the characters who Joe encounters. This includes a hilarious artist with the habit of talking to himself, whom Joe models for, Joe's ex-girlfriend, a topless dancer, and her friends (one is a drag queen and the other is a pre-op in real life, but this isn't stated in the film), and Joe's friend, the dialogue hints a lover or regular customer, who was badly burned by a flamethrower.
In the end, I do believe that this film was made for a certain crowd. But it's not necessarily a "gay" film, and it's not just a nudity fest; there is a real and touching story to the film. For example, there is a very moving sequence where Joe is feeding his young daughter, it's moments like these that make the Warhol/Morrissey Films so great.

      4 out of 5 stars SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL.......2003-07-31

The movie as well as the hunk are beautiful! I fell in love with Joe as soon as I saw his body that no other guy can compete with.
The story is very good. Sensitive, fragile and desperate. We do not loose any minute with this film as Joe keep us under his spell all the way.

The title should be REFECTIONS OF THE WORST MOVIE EVER. This movie is not only bad but disgusting, with him vomiting all over the place. Who wants to see that. I was watching this and my family is like what the heck are you watching. I couldn't even finish it. It went in the trash.

I have to be honest in that I had to go online to find out what the plot was. My friend also watched it and had no clue either.

Except for a few parts throughout the movie, it is basically the same crazy stuff going on which is funny in small doses. It took me a few weeks to make it through this movie and it was all worth it for what happens in the end.

If you are looking for a rollercoaster ride of a movie of the damned, then this is what you are looking for.

4 out of 5 stars A good movie which DVD version differs greatly from theater........2005-04-29

I won't review aesthetically this movie, which is a great oddity situated somewhere between John Waters' cinema and Lynch's Eraserhead. I will only indicate that the DVD version is shorter than the theatrical version I've enjoyed at Fantasia festival, Montreal. The experience of disorientation is therefore and sadly shortened (as it is altered).

Great buy indeed - but look for the full version, if it exists.

4 out of 5 stars A work of demented genius.......2005-02-14

It's hard to describe Damon Packard's experimental comedy/horror/satire masterpiece "Reflections of Evil." I've never seen anything quite like it before. Stylistically, it bears some resemblance to cyberpunk films like "Tetsuo: the Iron Man" and low-budget gross-out films like "Street Trash." But there's really nothing out there like this film anywhere.

"Reflections" is a study in contrasts. Throughout the film, the ugliness of present-day L.A., which Packard presents as a place of paranoia, hatred, and gushing bodily fluids, will be interposed with haunting scenes from a 1970s dreamworld. The plot, such as it is, is built on the wanderings of Packard's character "Bob," a grotesquely obese character who reminded me of Orson Welles' slovenly sheriff in "Touch of Evil." Bob is stuck in a hellish parody of Hollywood, constantly confronted by hostile dogs, police, and street people. The eccentricities of the people he encounters might be funny, except that Packard doesn't leave things at the point of comedy; he presses on until we realize how pathetic his characters are, and then it isn't funny anymore.

Bob is pathetic himself. His life resembles the ancient Greek version of hell, Tartarus, where desires that cannot be satisfied torment the afflicted forever. Bob has an addiction to sugar, and he inhales food (rendered with grotesque sound effects) to try to satisfy his endless cravings. He tries to sell junk watches to everyone he knows, but he never makes enough money to do anything but restock. The only person he relates to on a human level is his mother, who chides him constantly about his overeating.

The film is a disappointment in some ways. The street scenes go on way too long. Perhaps Packard watned his film about hell to literally put the audience through a hell of boredom, but that detracts from the bravura set pieces that otherwise fill the film's first ten and last thirty minutes. (I am describing the director's cut here, which is the version I saw.)

The first ten minutes of "Reflections of Evil" reveal its disturbing yet entertaining potential. We begin with a phony Tony Curtis intro, taken from some other DVD, into which Damon Packard's name and the title of his film have been clumsily dubbed. As Curtis drones on, stills from "Reflections of Evil" are clumsily inserted into his monologue. Curtis promises us a Serta mattress commercial with Joey Heatherton which, sure enough, soon materializes on the screen in all its seventies-era gaudiness. Packard shows a brilliant flare for superimposition, as scenes of him vomiting are later interspersed with Heatherton's increasingly shrill pitch for Serta, complete with explosions onstage.

The film's beginning also contains a promo for the Wednesday Night Movie of the Week, which turns out to be the credits for this film. These credits run over a spot-on parody of a cheesy sixties film, complete with a girl in a billowing, nearly transparent dress running in slo mo in front of a bunch of vintage apartment buildings and gardens. (This girl, as it turns out, is the older sister of the Packard character, who will be featured later in the film. She died in the 1970s and is somehow still stuck there. Her search for her brother "Bobby" will be as close to a plot as this film has.)

The credits are followed by more 1970s commercials, disconcertingly overdubbed with shrieking violins from Bernard Herrmann's score from "Psycho." The morbidly obese Packard character Bob then materializes across the street from the elderly couple's home. Packard soon falls and slides down the sidewalk in the first of many signs of physical corruption. (Packard is a great physical comedian; he takes more pratfalls in this movie than anyone since the 1920's.) His character has been gorging himself of liquor candies and he soon throws them up in what must be the grossest vomiting scene of all time.

The movie rapidly loses coherence after that, and becomes little more than a string of set-pieces hung loosely together. Wandering the streets of a hellish version of Hollywood, Packard (who apparently has died and gone to some kind of hell) becomes mired in bizarre parodies of "Poltergeist" and "E.T." (In fact, the whole film is a relentless hate-mail to Steven Spielberg. It later features a "Young Steven Spielberg" set piece that is bizarre and hilarious, and a weird ride at Universal Studios (after a gay tour of Hollywood) called "Schindler's List: the Ride.") Toward the end of the film Packard witnesses a bizarre version of a Lord of the Rings trailer and a demented "Star Wars" parody. He then locates his sister at the Universal Studios theme park, where he learns the real truth about himself and his destiny.

I won't even attempt to describe the rest of the plot, except to note that it is uneven and the good parts can be like gems in a pile of manure. The film is a prism of bizarre sound effects, editing, and special effect distortion. I don't know if anyone will like ALL of this movie, but cult film fanatics will certainly find parts of it quite entertaining.

UPDATE: An update, March 26, 2005

In the previous review, written in February 2005, I described the original director's cut of "Reflections of Evil," which was the only version available at the time. It is now possible to purchase a commercial version of ROE, which is significantly different from the original. I want to give some impressions of this new product (the "Vital Fluid" release), available through Amazon marketplace sellers.

The commercial version is quite a bit shorter and (most likely because of licensing issues) omits much of the creative sampling of sound effects, video clips, and movie music that made the original cut so haunting. The focus here is on Packard's own footage, rather than his jarring montages of cinematic found objects. There is an upside and a downside to this. The upside is that Packard's own stripped-down narrative is allowed to shine through, in all its gritty surrealism. Moreover, the editing makes the film more watchable and even a bit more coherent. There is also some new footage, but not a lot.

The downside is that we lose Packard's brilliant use of cultural archetypes and clever superimpositions. It is heartbreaking, for example, to see the "Golden Guru" sequence stripped of its original soundtrack ("Wooden Ships" by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young). There are many such losses throughout the film. In the original, Packard was a sort of cinematic Walter Benjamin, assembling and recombining cultural detritus in often breathtaking ways. Only a bare outline of this survives in the commercial version.

The new version also has some DVD extras, including deleted scenes (kind of humorous, given the non-narrative nature of what does appear in the film). There is also the sort of "making of" featurette we often see on DVD releases, with a twist: some (most?) of the stuff shown in the featurette does not appear in the film! We watch Packard create a Kung Fu sequence, for example, which was to show him battling a martial arts expert with numchuks by throwing shirts at him. This is reduced in both versions of the film to a street scene of a guy swearing in Japanese. It is interesting to watch Packard at work, but it's almost a shame that this sequence wound up on the cutting-room floor.

To sum up, in the commercial version, Packard is more like John Waters and less like Quentin Tarrantino. ROE is still a powerfully original film. People who didn't see the first version may find this one more watchable. Those who saw the original may be interested in this new version, for its contrasts with the original. As for me, I intend to hold on to my original version as well as the new one.
