Ray Peterson (Tom Hanks) would like nothing better than to spend a quiet week's vacation in his suburban home, drinking beer and watching TV. But, spurred on by his two friends' spinning of boyish paranoid fantasies about their reclusive neighbors, the Klopeks, the usually down-to-earth Ray begins to suspect his idyllic neighborhood has been invaded by an evil force, to the point where he and his friends become psychotically nosey. You see where this is going, and you see it from a mile off. Only the general surface-thin plot is somewhat offset by director Joe Dante's fine sense of the absurd, and a host of engagingly played neighbor-types, namely Rick Ducommun as Ray's best friend who's always proposing bad ideas, and Bruce Dern as a sometimes wild-eyed ex-vet who'd love some action. Dante and crew seem to have a knack for keeping these broad characterizations light enough that you don't mind their superficiality. But the best jokes in this unprepossessing film come from composer Jerry Goldsmith's score; Bruce Dern's presence, for instance, is announced by the theme from Patton, and the boys' first approach to the Klopeks' for a meet-and-greet is buttressed by classic strains from Sergio Leone spaghetti Westerns. Kudos to the Klopeks, for their evil ways are ably embodied by Henry Gibson, Courtney Gains, and Brother Theodore. In particular, any suburb that finds it's inhabited by the likes of Brother Theodore is in dire need of new zoning laws. But Carrie Fisher's role as Ray's amiably long-suffering wife is thankless, and she deserves better. --Jim Gay

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-06-27

Tom Hanks in one of his last great comedic roles before turning serious on us. A great combination of over-the-top characters makes this a really fun movie. The DVD includes an alternate ending sequence that any serious fan of the film needs to see at least once. But only once. Thank goodness they didn't use that one!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT 80'S "SUBURBIA" FLICK!!.......2007-05-14

This is one of the many great 80's movies! Tom Hanks is a suburbanite in this outrageous suspense-comedy about families on a block and how they create total chaos in an anything but "average" neighborhood. Slapstick comedy and witty humor make this suspense thriller "mystery" absolutely laughable! A must have for the 80's classic movie buff.

5 out of 5 stars the Burbs.......2007-05-11

What can I say about the Burbs??? Do you love Tom Hanks when he's at his funniest??? If you just answered YES, then You must see this movie. :)
You'll laugh like you did back in his "Bosom Buddies" days up to "Money Pit". A great story line with really great and funny actors, give it a whirl, you won't be disappointed. =) Cheers!

When Baby Einstein started its "video board books" in 1997, the company was virtually alone in the field of baby development. By its sixth video, the field has become crowded with similar-sounding titles. Now scientists might be able to analyze what a baby will get out of a video like Baby Dolittle compared to Baby Van Gogh, but is it worth getting more baby videos? Absolutely--babies love variety as much as their adult counterparts. On that level, Baby Dolittle scores. The theme of animals is a natural, and this show should cause squeals of delight from little ones 1 to 4 years old. Using a stimulating mix of brightly colored toys, whimsical puppets (including your host, Pavlov the Dog), and lots of pictures, Baby Dolittle takes the viewer on a 30-minute tour of commonly found animals. Help your little pal spot a pig on the farm or a dog in the house. Baby Dolittle uses animals' sounds, kids' drawings, and photography for each animal in four habitats. The natural settings and original, bright recordings of Beethoven, Rimsky-Korsakov, Vivaldi, and others should make this a favorite every time you want to visit Old MacDonald's Farm. Followed by a companion production, Baby Dolittle World Animals. --Doug Thomas

There aren't enough superlatives in the dictionary to describe the excellence of Akeelah and the Bee. Superbly written and directed by Doug Atchison, this PG-rated family drama covers the same dramatic territory as the acclaimed 2002 documentary Spellbound and the 2005 drama Bee Season, but the fictional story of 11-year-old Akeelah Anderson (Keke Palmer) is, if anything, even more entertaining, inspiring, and full of hope for the potential of children everywhere. Although reluctant at first (and fearful of being labeled a "brainiac" by classmates at her under-funded middle school in South Central Los Angeles), Akeelah grows determined to win the district, regional, and ultimately the Scripps National Spelling Bee, aided by the able coaching of an English professor (Laurence Fishburne) who, like Akeelah's overworked single mother (Angela Bassett) is slowly recovering from a devastating personal loss. Structured like a conventional sports drama, Akeelah and the Bee rises above its generic trappings to become an uplifting and deeply moving study of friendship, pride, fair play, and above all, the value of self-confidence and realization that there's more to life than winning. As played by the young Palmer in an award-worthy performance, Akeelah is a winner in the best sense of the word, and so is this wonderfully positive movie. --Jeff Shannon

Description

An inspirational drama, Akeelah and the Bee is the story of Akeelah Anderson (Keke Palmer), a precocious eleven-year-old girl from south Los Angeles with a gift for words. Despite the objections of her mother Tanya (Angela Bassett), Akeelah enters various spelling contests, for which she is tutored by the forthright Dr. Larabee (Laurence Fishburne); her principal Mr. Welch (Curtis Armstrong) and the proud residents of her neighborhood. Akeelah's aptitude earns her an opportunity to compete for a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee and in turn unites her neighborhood who witness the courage and inspiration of one amazing little girl.

5 out of 5 stars I-N-S-P-I-R-I-N-G!.......2007-06-05

At first, this would seem like a typical against-all odds themed films that you've all seen before, but there is more depth to this than that. Emotionally complex and gratifying tale of a young girl in the ghetto who overcomes to try to be a spelling champ.

What I found interesting is not only the complex relationship she has with Laurence Fishburne (in one of his best roles) as her mentor and his fascinating (and unexpected) motives in helping the unrelated Akeelah, and the friendship and comraderie she develops with an Asian and Latino competitor (the former's relationship with his father is a subject for another movie itself),.

But one really stereotype-shattering scene in the film that fascinated me more than anything else is when Akeelah's wannabe drug-dealing gangster brother riducules her. The older drug dealer that her brother looks up to puts a stop to this and encourages Akeelah. I loved this because it shows a seldom-seen aspect of ghetto life-even hardcore thugs sometimes want to see kids take another path than what they have chosen. Having experienced this myself as a child, this scene gave this movie an addded icing to the top for me! The way the neighborhood puts a lot of hope into Akeelah and rallies around the child as a symbol of the possible is moving beyond words.

Imagine Jimmy Stewart coming back as a preteen African-American girl and you get the idea. See it, and be I-N-S-P-I-R-E-D!

5 out of 5 stars great flix.......2007-06-01

I was apprehensive at first and did not want to see this in the movies however, decided to rent it on Netflix - I'm glad I did. My interpetation of this movie was not a race issue. It was a story about a community who thought that a girls dream was impossible and foolish, came together and assisted her. She was not your typical child; but had the desire, help and work ethics to accomplish her goal. In this movie children picked their friends because of common interests not race or income. The ending was great - a little spice changes the bee.

5 out of 5 stars It's not about just spelling, it's about R-E-S-P-E-C-T.......2007-05-22

I missed "Akeelah and the Bee" in theatres and I sincerely regret that. This is one of those films that you leave with a tear in your eye and a song in your heart. "Akeelah" is not just about spelling, but about dreaming--and spreading the contagion of dreams to the most unexpected people.

The soundtrack for this film is also one of the best I have ever heard. Whoever orchestrated the music did a fabulous job selecting inspirational songs from Old School to new funk. Both are well worth owning and playing again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Awsome!!.......2007-05-18

I saw the movie for the first time and was thrilled. I thought this was a great family movie and very very encouraging. Keep up the good work Laurence and Angela. Hopefully you guys will do more movies together. All others in this movie did a great job as well. So enspiring for African American families. Would love to see more on this level. Lastly, I have 3 words to say.
Great! Great! Great!

Lynn from OKC

5 out of 5 stars Surprise Delight.......2007-05-16

When Akeelah and the Bee first was released, I did not rush to see it,
depite favorable reviews. It seemed each week that other movies were
more to my interest. Then, I rented it on Netflix. And was I surprised!
This is one of the best family friendly films I have ever seen. From
the first moment, this movie sets just the right tone, and continues to
get everything just right. Keke Palmer and Lawrence Fishburne and the
entire cast are superb. The script is outstanding. I personslly liked
the film better than any of the 5 academy award nominees, including
Little Miss Sunshine, my preference for best picture of the 5 nominees.
Don't miss this gem. My only regret is it is a fictional story.

Some people think "family entertainment" is an oxymoron, but even they might enjoy Because of Winn-Dixie. This straightforward story of a girl and her dog is simple without being simplistic, heartfelt without being sappy, and thoughtful without being ponderous. Opal (Annasophia Robb, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, who manages the near-impossible feat of being cute without being cutesy) can't make any friends in the small town of Naomi until she hooks up with a dog that's running loose in a supermarket. She spontaneously names him after the store and soon the dog is leading her into unexpected places--a pet store, where she meets an awkward musician (Dave Matthews); a library, where she meets a librarian with as many stories as books (Eva Marie Saint); and into a house shrouded with underbrush, where she meets a blind old woman who sees with her heart (Cicely Tyson). This could have been sentimental glop, but director Wayne Wang (Smoke, The Joy Luck Club) and a restrained script draw honest emotions from the actors and an eerie beauty from the Florida landscape; this one of the few family movies that captures the childhood sense that everyday life can be mystical. Also starring Jeff Daniels (The Purple Rose of Cairo, Something Wild) as Opal's minister father. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Based on the best-selling book, BECAUSE OF WINN-Dixie is the heartwarming "tail" of a young girl (Annasophia Robb) whose life is changed by a scruffy, fun-loving pooch she names Winn-Dixie. The special bond between them works magic on her reserved dad (Jeff Daniels) and the eccentric townspeople they meet during one unforgettable summer.

5 out of 5 stars adorable family film!.......2007-06-28

This movie is fun and cute to watch. The characters are well written and you care about them and what happens to them. The animals are adorable to watch and are well trained. It was a funny scene when one of the animals damaged the officer's car. The plot never slows and keeps you satisfied until the end. It is refreshing to see Hollywood produce quality films such as this one.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Film For The Whole Family.......2007-05-21

My wife and I watched this movie. It is nice to see a family movie, that tells a great story with great acting that children can understand and enjoy and adults would be hooked along with their kids. Dogs help accomplish this, and the dog here is wonderful.

The story focuses on the character played by AnnaSophia Robb, a daughter of a preacher (Jeff Daniels). If, like me, you are a Christian who is used to negative portrayals of Christians, don't worry. Yes, Daniel's character is human, but no less so than any other character. In this case, the portrayal is neutral, with him not being a hypocrite but more being disconnected, partially due to the pain in his life.

There are lessons for community in this film. The only thing I'd do differently . . . mild spoiler, here . . . was show transformation in the police officer. But that is a minor complaint.

Jeff

5 out of 5 stars Because of Winn-Dixie.......2007-05-14

Very cute movie! I purchased it for my 7 year old grand daughter, but I watched it with her. This is a movie that the entire family can watch and enjoy. I liked it so much that I could watch it again....that's saying something for me. Winn-Dixie brought father and daughter closer together and it helped them both to be able to talk about her mother that was no longer a part of her life.

5 out of 5 stars Winn-Dixie a Winner.......2007-05-12

Beacause of Winn Dixie is a great movie for kids of all ages. Highly Recommended!

My daughter can't get enough of "Winn Dixie". There is no inapproriate adult humor. The story is sweet and inspiring, a must have for animal lovers and pet owners with children!

Spike Lee's incendiary look at race relations in America, circa 1989, is so colorful and exuberant for its first three-quarters that you can almost forget the terrible confrontation that the movie inexorably builds toward. Do the Right Thing is a joyful, tumultuous masterpiece--maybe the best film ever made about race in America, revealing racial prejudices and stereotypes in all their guises and demonstrating how a deadly riot can erupt out of a series of small misunderstandings. Set on one block in Bedford-Stuyvesant on the hottest day of the summer, the movie shows the whole spectrum of life in this neighborhood and then leaves it up to us to decide if, in the end, anybody actually does the "right thing." Featuring Danny Aiello as Sal, the pizza parlor owner; Lee himself as Mookie, the lazy pizza-delivery guy; John Turturro and Richard Edson as Sal's sons; Lee's sister Joie as Mookie's sister Jade; Rosie Perez as Mookie's girlfriend Tina; Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee as the block elders, Da Mayor and Mother Sister; Giancarlo Esposito as Mookie's hot-headed friend Buggin' Out; Bill Nunn as the boom-box toting Radio Raheem; and Samuel L. Jackson as deejay Mister Señor Love Daddy. A rich and nuanced film to watch, treasure, and learn from--over and over again. --Jim Emerson

poor spike lee: for 20 years now he has been trying to live up to the promise of this early movie -- but sad to say, two decades down the line, there wasnt as much there as people thought there was. the imagery of the streets (based on the real life howard beach horror) is a trifle too parochial, and the actions of the protagonists just a bit too easy to project before they occur. i honestly can say i didnt like a single person here; in attempting to show their flaws, lee ignores their decency. that aside, there are images that will stay with you a long time -- but as i said earlier, this should have been the heralding of a directorial career, not the peak.

5 out of 5 stars Boycott the Motherf**ker That Don't Like This Film!.......2007-05-08

Sizzling hot! Music by Public Enemy, and a film by the great Spike Lee. And it's all set in the middle of summer, on one of the hottest days ever (Spike would return to this theme again with "Summer of Sam"), and with the coolest cast ever!
Look here, string-cheese head motherf**ker: Rewind it and watch the s**ts again and again! Boycott the motherf**ker who doesn't like this film!
This is a milestone in filmmaking, it's reality...It's the Powers that be!
WAY ahead of its time, speaks to many generations to come, and excellent, awesome filmmaking with never a dull moment.
I would give this film 10 stars if possible...Classic!!
And, that's the truth Ruth!

5 out of 5 stars Powerful Film.......2007-02-16

I remember not saying a word for at least fifteen minutes after watching this film..It was one the most powerful films I've ever seen and makes the viewer reach inside his/herself and examine their attitude toward racism...

5 out of 5 stars spike lee's best flick.......2007-02-03

this mother conjures a time when a new spike lee movie was an event. this movie packs more emotion, beauty, exuberance and life in every minute than 99% of the movies coming out of hollywood. the music, the cinematography, the kaleidoscope of viewpoints and characters, the strong sense of place (NYC, of course), the amazing cast...all in the service of an honest, complex look at racism. Lee leaves you with two choices at the end, as symbolized by Malcolm X and Martin Luther King.

at the same time that i praise this wonderful movie, i have to wonder what's happened to spike lee since. mo better blues and jungle fever were interesting but never come close to the impact of this movie. crooklyn is sweet and malcolm x is a great film, but still pale compared to lee's best movie.

4 out of 5 stars so, what IS the right thing?.......2007-01-25

Spike Lee's study of urban racial tensions stirred controversy when it was first released. Did he intend to advocate violence or merely record it as so many have experienced it? At the end of this film powerful quotations from Martin Luther King and Malcolm X support either view. Set in the sultry summer of inner city Brooklyn, nearly every scene in this film crackles with tension. The black neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyevesant is patrolled by white cops, and commercialized by an Italian family pizzeria that has been a mainstay for twenty-five years, and an upstart Korean grocery store. The racial tensions simmer just as much within the black community; there is only derision for a plan to boycott the pizzeria, Da Mayor is part village idiot and part wise elder, and even Mookie (Spike Lee) is caught betweeen allegiance to his black community and his Italian employer. Doing the right thing is sometimes hard not only to do but even to know.

A rare and harsh gem of a film, Mi Vida Loca tells the story of young Hispanic women in Los Angeles and the struggles they have in a life of gangs, drugs, and personal betrayal. Mousie (Seidy Lopez) and Sad Girl (Angel Aviles) are best friends from childhood, growing up in gang-infested Echo Park and remaining loyal to each other. But when Sad Girl sleeps with Mousie's boyfriend (a drug dealer who is killed) and becomes pregnant, their friendship is ruptured. As the violence of their neighborhood erupts around them, they must try to stay together as friends despite their betrayals. This is an unforgiving look at a world where women seem to have no choice but to raise their children, deal drugs, and survive by whatever means necessary. Director Allison Anders (Gas Food Lodging) structures the film as a series of unflinching and vivid anecdotes, bringing insight to a tragic side of modern society. --Robert Lane

5 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2007-01-20

My husband has been looking for this movie for years for me too see. I finally found it on DVD at a very reasonable price, and it was mailed directly to my house! So I didn't have to deal with holiday crowds and lines. He was so surprised on Christmas, it was great.

2 out of 5 stars Oh so mediocre.......2006-08-09

I find it difficult to feel strongly about this film one way or the other because there just isn't much there. Newcomer and rich kid James Spader moves to a new town, pretends he's a rebel and quickly makes enemies with the local high school hoodlums. Being too darn smart for his own good, he falls for Lead Hoodlum's best girl. Lo and behold, she dreams of a better life and likes him right back, but is too afraid of Lead Hoodlum to trade up. Yawn. Spader's faux bad boy act wears thin very quickly and the cheese oozes rather heavily, though Kim Richards (aka Paris Hilton's aunt) is awfully cute and offers the film's only redeeming value. Whether or not one watches depends on one's desire to see Kim.

5 out of 5 stars Tuff Love.......2006-07-18

Here is a great movie for those 80's fans out there. With a young James Spader in the lead role, you will love the action of a young man who doesn't fit the role his mother would like him to be. So the family have moved to a new town and to another school. He quickly finds himself falling for the tough bullie's girlfriend and some major trouble. Best scene is where he thinks he is being chased by a car and it's actually his friend driving it looking for him. Definitely a movie for the die hard 80's fans. (Just like myself).

Great! Great! Great!

John (An American Werewolf in London) Landis directed this blackly amusing and gruesome story from the second season of the Masters of Horror anthology TV series about a lonely serial killer's search for the perfect Family. George Wendt offers the lion's share of the chuckles--and the chills--as a seemingly normal suburbanite whose sweater-vest-and-groomed-lawn exterior conceals his true nature as a bloodthirsty murderer who kidnaps and butchers strangers in an attempt to assemble a flawless nuclear family; Meredith Monroe and Matt Keeslar are the neighbors who catch his eye as possible new additions. No stranger to mixing horror and humor, Landis' bloody blend is more successful than in his previous MoH outing, Deer Woman, thanks in part to the lead actors and writer Brent Hanley's script, which features one of the nastiest denouements this side of E.C. Comics. The DVD includes commentary by Hanley, making-of featurettes on the production and the score, a still gallery, and the original script in DVD-ROM format. --Paul Gaita

Description

It's a beautiful day in suburbia where mild-mannered bachelor Harold Thompson (George Wendt of CHEERS) is happily at work in his basement building the perfect family. But when a young couple moves in nextdoor, Harold sets his sights on the sexy young wife (Meredith Monroe of DAWSON'S CREEK). In a sunshine world of picket fences and manicured lawns, is it ever possible to know what gruesome plans are percolating in the minds of your neighbors? Matt Keeslar (SCREAM 3, ROSE RED) co-stars in this grisly black comedy with a killer twist from Director John Landis (AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, ANIMAL HOUSE) and Writer Brent Hanley (FRAILTY). Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The best family is a dead family.......2007-06-18

This entry in the Masters of Horror series is basically a suburban play on the movie 'Psycho.' George Wendt of 'Cheers' fame is your average, polite neighbour who is secretly killing people and setting up their skeletons as his own 'family.' When a new couple moves in down the road, he becomes obsessed with the hot wife and decides to add her to his collection.

'Family' mixes elements of horror, suspense, and satire. I agree with other reviewers that it doesn't ever focus enough on one element to truly standout in that category, but it's still an engaging tale with a strong script and good direction. The acting is solid, and it's fun to see George Wendt take on this kind of role.

A nice effort from John Landis. Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars Worth Watching Just for the Twist Ending .......2007-05-24

Bare Bones (Quick facts):
Family is the latest offering in the Masters of Horror series. This time, director John Landis (American Werewolf in London, Animal House) lends his unique vision to the horror genre. The result is a campy little horror movie that's very enjoyable.

The Meat of the Matter (The plot):
Harold Thompson is a mild mannered man with a penchant for 1950's decorating, good family values, and gospel music. He also likes to kill people and use their bodies to construct dummies in order to have the perfect family. One day a new couple moves in. They are his neighbors and become his friends. But when Harold starts coveting his neighbor's wife, he decides it might be time to trade in his old wife and get a new member of the family... but first he has to get rid of her husband.

Viscera (My ramblings):
Family is one of the better offerings from Masters of Horror. I liked the corpse scenes, nice and gross. The acting is a little flat and the interactions a bit too staged. No one has manners as nice as these neighbors! Watching this you can tell George Wendt's performance seems off slightly, like a copy of a copy. The rest of the acting is wooden as well. The plot seems to drag at some spots. However, over all, I really liked this installment. The dark humor is great, and the morality play ending is spectacular. If you like Tales from the Crypt or Alfred Hitchcock presents, I think you'll really like the episode. But if you go in expecting something spectacular, gory, or novel you will be disappointed.

Recommended for horror movie fans with patience to survive the slow bits and a love of twist endings.

3 out of 5 stars Funny.......2007-05-18

This could be an episode of Alfred Hitchkock presents, a nice funny story with a wicked ending.
The three actors are giving great performances.
Not much gore, some blood and melting bodies, but that's John Landis and it's better than "Deerwoman".

3 out of 5 stars Standard Corpse Defilement. Nothing Special. .......2007-04-28

"Masters Of Horror: Family" is yet another riff on the old 'normal guy who's actually a psycho' tale, and is really nothing to get all choked up about.

However, a relatively tired plot device and a semi-predictable 'twist' ending aren't enough to entirely sink this one, either. There's some good irony, a few funny moments (it's John Landis, after all), a couple of subtle emotional nuances, and a pretty good turn by George Wendt as the Norman Bates/Ed Gein type turned loose in a sitcom-like, idyllic suburban environment.

A note, though -- this is one of the least violent or bloodily impressive episodes of "M.o.H", since most of the violence or ghastliness is done either off-screen or post mortem. If you're looking for a gore-fest, check out a different episode instead.

5 out of 5 stars Masters Of Horror - Family DVD Review.......2007-04-27

John Landis again scores big with his Masters Of Horror entry. First it was "Dear Woman" now it's "Family". This film has an incredible script written by Brent Hanley and with Landis's amazing direction skills it's no wonder this is the best Masters Of Horror DVD to be released from the second season. It mixes humor, suspense, mystery, and horror all into one nasty episode. Give Brent Hanley a hell of a lot of credit for this story because it's one of the most powerful elements "Family" has going for it.

George Wendt has become a very convincing psycho with "The King Of The Ants" and now "Family". The rest of the cast does a great job, but it's Wendt who shines as the psycho/murderer/nutcase.

This is a must see if you are a Masters Of Horror fan or you just like horror movies in general. Pick this up and you won't be disappointed.
