5 out of 5 stars Elegant, homey and family friendly.......2007-07-03

This is my favorite Alcott story and it is so endearing. It is definitely a Victorian delight with beautiful costumes and appropriate settings.

3 out of 5 stars Average movie.......2007-06-26

Perhaps the book is better. This could have been an awesome movie with more character development and embellishment on the story. It's clean and decent, though. Good family movie for a "girls' night!"

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good the second time around........2007-06-20

I first saw this movie on tv, but it was at the very end. It caught my interest so I decided to buy it. When I saw the whole movie from start to finish, I thought it was just too simple a plot. Perhaps my expectations were ridiculously high, so I put it away. Well, one Sunday afternoon I decided to re-watch the movie again, give it a second go, and I'm glad I did. Yes, the movie is quite simple, but that is the beauty of it. It's the kind of movie that makes you feel good in the end.

I love turn of the century movies. I've seen this one over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Must have musical.......2007-05-16

Best of the two "Bye Bye Birdie" movies (1995) and (1963). I am not fond of any Jason Alexander's work, but this one is notable. My family wore the VHS tape out. This DVD is a replacement for the tape.

1 out of 5 stars The Pits.......2006-08-13

A travesty of tacky talent and too-little imagination.

How anyone thought they could improve on Ann Margaret is beyond me.

5 out of 5 stars Bye Bye Birdie .......2006-07-10

I love this movie. I have never seen the first one but this one was fun. I am planing to see the fist one. Jason Alexander and Venessa Willams did a great job togeather. Now i wish they could make a "Bye Bye Birdie 2"! I would recomend this movie to anyone who loves musicals(like myself) and a romantic story(again myself). Have Fun and i hope this helped!

3 out of 5 stars A 27 year old playing a 16 -18 year old?.......2006-06-28

There are pros and cons about this version as there is with the 1963 version. Ann Margret was 22 when she played the teenage Kim. She could pass for a high school teenager much better than 27-year-old Chynna Phillips. Ironically this role should have gone to Chynna's younger half sister, Bijoux, who was 15 at the time this movie was made.
I feel Chynna Phillips was mis-cast as the teenage Kim, because she photographed looking like a thirty-something housewife trying to dress like a fifties teenager; she has an old-looking face as opposed to the fresher, softer face of the 22-year-old Ann Margret. Phillips has a nice singing voice but her portrayal of the character was very weak and unconvincing, as if she herself were uncomfortable playing a high school girl at age 27. A much younger actress/singer should have played Kim.

This version is more true to the play and focuses more on the relationship between Rosie and Albert, especially in the latter half of the film, whereas the 1963 version tended to focus more on Kim, Hugo and their friends, culminating in the kiss between Conrad and Kim, with Hugo's intervention. That particular section appeared in the middle of this updated version. At the time Ann-Margret was hot so I supposed that's the reason more emphasis was placed on her character in general and on the Birdie Kiss scene.

This 1995 version has a lot of great singing and dancing--the people cast knew how to sing and their voices blended beautifully. Jason Alexander surprised me at how well he sang and played Albert, though I'm always going to have a great fondness for Mr. Dick Van Dyke's portrayal.

I have to say that Vanessa Williams' portrayal of Rosie was superb, strong, sassy, and full of pizzazz; she handled the singing and dancing wonderfully compared to poor Janet Leigh in the 1963 version, who was not a singer and did not even FAINTLY resemble a Latina character; she was forced to wear a cheesy black wig over her blonde hair which made it even more apparent she was dreadfully mis-cast for the role of Rosie. Rita Moreno would have been PERFECT in the role, so it's surprising she was passed over for the non-singing non-Latin Janet Leigh. Guess the old Hollywood practice of casting known caucasian stars of European descent in roles of color was still going on, even in 1963.

If you're a fan of the original play, this movie will especially be your cup of tea. I have never seen the play, so my point of reference was originally the 1963 movie release. Now that I've seen something closer to the original Broadway play, I must say I enjoy this version a lot more, because there are more great songs included. Still, I will always love the 1963 release, so I think it's an asset to have BOTH version of Bye Bye Birdie in your DVD library.

5 out of 5 stars SUPER MUSICAL COMEDY.......2006-03-10

This version of Bye Bye Birdie is really excellent. The acting and dancing are superb. Laughing was automatic while watching this DVD of Bye Bye Birdie.

Brandon Lee's penultimate picture isn't much on paper--a dour college kid, bitter over his activist father's death in Tiananmen Square, is targeted by a Chicago mobster after witnessing a gangland killing and reluctantly joins forces with brooding, obsessed cop Powers Boothe--but then who was watching this for the story? Consider this his screen test for the superior The Crow. Lee bites off bad dialogue with surly sneers, swaggers through scenes with the confidence of a movie veteran, and moves... well, his moves are the real reason to see the film. Nick Mancuso has a good time as the weasely mobster getting sloppy in his desperation, and Powers plays the father figure with less conviction than sheer tenacity, but Brandon Lee is the star-in-the-making of this production. This, unfortunately, is no star vehicle, but it provides enough bone-crunching, butt-kicking martial arts action for any action junkie. --Sean Axmaker

Description

In this explosive martial arts action adventure, college student Jake Lo is pursued by smugglers, mobsters and crooked federal agents, after he witnesses a murder by a Mafia kingpin (Nick Mancuso). Determined to survive, he single-handedly takes on Chicago's warring drug lords with the assistance of a renegade cop (Powers Boothe) and his beautiful partner (Kate Hodge).

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars great fight sequences and screen presence of Brandon Lee elavate this movie.......2007-03-21

i watched this movie a long time ago,and remember it as being nothing short of awesome.i guess our tastes change as we grow older.anyway, after watching it last night,i found myself disappointed.don't get me wrong,i still think it's a fairly decent movie.the problem is that many movies of this genre are fairly decent.(and some of course are not so decent)i think there are 2 things that set this movie apart from others. one thing is how fantastic and spectacular the fight scenes are.the other is the charisma and screen presence of the late Brandon Lee.without those 2 components, this movie would be maybe a bit above average.as it is this movie gets 3.5/5

5 out of 5 stars Great action movie.......2006-11-11

I saw this movie as a kid and like it to this day. Brandon was an awesome martial artist and had so much potential, it's very tragic he and his father were taken so young. What they left behind has paved the way for action movies and they will always be remembered. As far as movies go this one has intense action, good characters, strong plot with a dash of romance and decent acting for this type of film. This movie would be ok for teenagers but not for young kids, it has a LOT of violence, some cursing and a hot love scene! This can be a good movie night choice for couples, guys will like the action and women will like the bedroom scene featuring Lee's amazing ABS!

4 out of 5 stars What would have been.......2005-10-05

Rapid Fire will forever stand as the movie that landed Brandon Lee the star making role of the Crow, which sadly as we all know, would be the last time he graced the screen. Lee plays a college student and martial artist with a tragic past who witnesses a mob hit and is soon on the run. Eventually he allies himself with an obsessed cop (Powers Boothe) to bring down the mob and the heroin smuggling drug ring it fronts, with plenty of greatly coreographed action along the way. Lee alone makes Rapid Fire worth seeing, not only because it was one of his last screen roles and a look at what might have been, but because he could have become the biggest action star of his time, much like his legendary father. Lee has all the right moves here, and his swaggering performance is reason enough to see the film. Boothe is great as well in one of his rare good guy roles, and the cast is rounded out by an ultra sleezy Nick Mancuso as a mob boss and Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3's Kate Hodge. The story isn't always coherent, and the editing is a bit triteful, but for action fans and fans of Lee's short lived legacy, this is worth picking up.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD MOVIE FLAWED DVD.......2005-01-21

AFTER READING EVERYONE ELSES REVIEWS, I DON'T KNOW IF THEY JUST DIDN'T NOTICE THE JUMP IN THE FIGHT SCENE IN MANCUSO'S BAR OR I JUST GOT A QUALITY CONTROL ERROR DVD. MY DVD LEAVES OUT HALF THE FIGHT SCENE, I KNOW, I ALSO HAVE IT ON VHS. IS THERE ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE WHO NOTICED THIS.

5 out of 5 stars Now THIS Is What a Martial Arts Movie Should Be!.......2004-11-27

To the strains of sitar music, a lithe figure dressed in white moves in slow motion against a black background, his graceful movements funneling seamlessly into violence. One by one, opponents present themselves. One by one they're smashed aside. Slowly we segue into a close-up of an intense, handsome young man's face, and we see the words BRANDON LEE. Thus begins Rapid Fire. If you wanted to build a martial arts movie superstar - and obviously that was the goal - you couldn't have done it better than with that sequence.

Serious martial artists were aware of Brandon Lee's existence since his birth. They also knew he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps as an actor. All across America - probably the world - untold thousands of people rooted for him. Brandon paid his dues in a few ultra-low-budget projects before co-starring with Dolph Lundgren in Showdown In Little Tokyo. Not a great film, but Brandon was good in it, and that got him Rapid Fire, his first lead role and, as it turned out, an absolute starmaker. (On the strength of Rapid Fire, Brandon got The Crow - and we all know how that turned out.)

It's fascinating to compare Brandon as a martial artist in Rapid Fire to his dad. Bruce Lee started out a highly skilled martial artist with real-world capabilities who became an actor. Brandon by contrast always wanted to be an actor, thus his martial arts training was geared toward flashy techniques that would look good on-screen. What the hell, they DID look great. Brandon, though obviously a fine athlete, didn't have his father's explosive speed and power. But then, who does?

So many martial arts movies are dumb chock-socky. By contrast Rapid Fire is well-written and directed, and decently acted, especially by Brandon, Powers Boothe as Detective Lieutenant Mace Ryan (God, you gotta love that name), and Nick Mancuso in a cheerfully over-the-top performance as a crazed mob boss. On top of that, Rapid Fire fulfills the greatest requirement of a martial arts flick: the sense, as you watch the actors in motion on the screen, of "Oh my God, I didn't know human beings could DO that." This is not a love of violence per se, but rather a love of watching hard, competent people push the human body's design parameters in violent conflict.

The fights in Rapid Fire were choreographed by Brandon and Jeff Imada. The standout scene is a fight to the death between Brandon and Al Leong (probably best known as Endo, the torturer from Lethal Weapon, and Uli, the chocolate eating terrorist from Die Hard). All the fight scenes are top-notch, though several stunts, like using a motorcycle to drive a bad guy through a row of glass display cases, and employing a clothing rack to trip an opponent during a fight, were lifted from Jackie Chan's Police Story. However (a) in all honesty I have to say that both these moments were done better in Rapid Fire, (b) in 1992 in the US only a handful of hardcore kung fu movie buffs had ever seen a Jackie Chan film; even those few recognizing the influence probably smiled at the homage rather than considering it a rip-off.

There are other smile-making moments in Rapid Fire, like comments on how Jake Lo's (Brandon's) deceased father was such a great martial artist; Brandon's summary clocking of a bad guy dramatically swinging nunchukas, his dad's most famous weapon (obviously this fellow had watched way too many Bruce Lee movies); Brandon using as a disguise an outfit incorporating the same sort of Coke bottle glasses his dad used for the same purpose in The Chinese Connection; and I laughed out loud at the scene where Jake explodes all over a treacherous FBI agent, beating him like a red-headed stepchild, leading Mace Ryan to comment, "Jake, why don't you take those fists of fury of yours outside?" That little in-joke requires no explanation to any Bruce Lee fan.

So for Brandon a handful of crappy roles led to Showdown In Little Tokyo (so-so) begat Rapid Fire (a truly, deeply enjoyable action adventure flick) and then The Crow (an absolute masterpiece). And that's all we're ever going to have of Brandon Lee.

2 out of 5 stars Puppet Master - LEGACY.......2004-12-31

Let me sum this up for you in as short a space as possible:

Be FOREWARNED: This is not a full-length movie. It is a regurgitation of the previous REAL installments of the series. I am being generous with 2 stars only for the fact that most of the rest of the original series is either unavailable or very hard to obtain on DVD. It is for this reason alone that you may find it worthwhile to buy this 'story'. Even so, it is not really worth more than 6 bucks new. It can bring back pleasant memories if you have been a casual fan of the series and are willing to check these out on DVD technology. It does however, raise the question as to why the rest of the series has not been released yet or is easily available. The Full Moon trailers advertise other 80's gems such as DOLLS amongst others that should be and have no business not being on DVD...or at least available on here or your average DVD store.

Overall, I would say that if you are an ardent fan of the series, you may spend your time better watching something else. If you dig killer doll/puppet movies from the golden age of 80's horror, and haven't really gotten into this series as much as you wish you could, then pay the least amount for this as possible. I really wish I could say that it can hold you over for widely-released official versions of all the films, but I just can't.

3 out of 5 stars Legacy isn't on par with previous Puppet Master movies.......2004-11-24

Most of the reviews on here seem to be for the original Puppet Master. I agree that the first movie was great fun (I enjoyed the first seven films in the series actually) but this review is for Puppet Master Legacy which is the 8th film in the series.

Part 8 isn't as much fun as the previous films. Puppet Master fans may find themselves dissapointed with Part 8/Legacy because it's a "clip show" that uses clips from the previous 7 films! That's right - 95% of Puppet Master Legacy is flashbacks to previous Pupet Master films! It seems that Charles Band has fallen on hard times. Too bad. I'm a big fan of Band's previous work. I know he has a new one called Dr Moreau's House of Pain but the rest of his recent releases are retreads of previously shot footage. Thus in Puppet Master Legacy we get a few minutes of new footage involving a woman with a gun questioning the adult Peter, from part III, about Andre Toulon's secret and the rest of the film is all stock footage from Puppet Master 1 -7.

The heavy use of flashbacks ALMOST works but ultimately the movie doesn't deliver. Legacy might be OK if you go into it knowing that it's far from a new Puppet Master entry and if you haven't seen the previous Puppet Master films in quite some time. As a "clip show" it's fine but it's not what most fans of the series are looking for. Fans of the series who have seen the previous films many times will more than likely fail to find this entry particularly entertaining since they have seen 95% of this film before. The new cast (all two of em) are fine and there are far worse ways to spend a rainy Saturday afternoon in front of the tube than watching Puppet Master Legacy - but that's the highest praise I can give this one. I've enjoyed the 7 previous Puppet Master films a great deal though - so hell I'll be kind to this one and give it 2 1/2 stars.

Fortunately there's a 9th Puppet Master on the horizon! Sci Fi Channel will be showing Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys in December! We've been waiting forever for this so lets hope it's a good one. Even if it isn't Im perfectly happy with my DVD set of Puppet Master 1 -7 so I can't complain. Thanks for the fun Charles Band! I wish you the best with your future film projects and will be checking out Dr Moreau's House of Pain in the near future.

Keep the faith Puppet-heads! Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys is coming! Meanwhile: Take a look at Puppet Master 1- 7, pop some corn, enjoy a cold drink, kick back, and enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars The End? Sad For So Many Reasons........2004-11-09

You know that feeling you get when your favorite show that's been on for years ends with a clip show? Yeah that sucks doesn't it? "Puppet Master Legacy" takes this idea and applies it in movie form.

The continuity of this series has always been horribly skewed so I was interested to see how they tied everything together. I suppose they did a fairly good job, at least it seems to make sense. Although the explanation as to how Leech Woman died and then showed back up three movies later in perfect condition was still not touched upon. Darn, I was hoping that was at least one loose end they'd tie up!

I understand Full Moon barely had the budget to buy a Big Mac in the later years of thier movies. Heck I'm not even sure they exist anymore! But they at least were still in buisness last year (2003) because they churned out this blasfemous piece of garbage.

I will say that I'm glad the puppets (kind of) got an ending. But I wanted to see them work toward it, not sit passively by while the latest puppet master and some spy chick relived moments from the last seven movies. Not to mention the movie only lasted an hour and ten minutes AND there were no extras on the dvd.

It's sad that such a great francise had to deteriorate completely before it was laid to rest. R.I.P. Puppet Master. At least Full Moon can no longer bastarize your name.

1 out of 5 stars A Huge Disappointment!.......2004-11-07

Do any of these reviews actually refer to "Puppet Master : Legacy"? This was a terrible movie. As a fan of the Puppet Master series, I was greatly disappointed. This is nothing but clips of the old movies loosely strung together as some unidentified spy character tries to learn the Puppet Master's secrets. The movie, if you can call it that, is also a mere one hour and eleven minutes, with no bonus features on the DVD. If anything, this is just an extended promotion for the seven original films. I wish Full Moon would buy back the rights to their original Puppet Master films and release them properly on DVD. This poor hack-job of recycled movie clips is just awful.

3 out of 5 stars Average Funny Movie that many sons will identify with.......2007-06-25

I remember seeing this film in the theaters with my mother. This is a pretty corney movie about an LA police officer who's mother comes to visit and get's caught up in a large police investigation. She is Overbearing, Intrusive, but has a big heart and has her son's best interest in mind. As for a production, not really good, stallone's performance is flat, Getty does a decent job, but overall worth a viewing.

4 out of 5 stars cute movie.......2006-12-08

this movie has given a completely new face to mothers.this movie tells us that while mom's can be caring they can be tough too.

3 out of 5 stars A good decent comedy.......2006-08-05

This movie was funny, I had a tainted opinion aswell as prior to watching it I read alot of reviews saying how bad it was. It's not half bad at all! You've got to remember this movie is now 15 years old, and although a typical comedy for the time it still has a lot of good laughs and a funny story line. Stallone's dream where he's in the diapers is just hilarous...

2 out of 5 stars Stallone is funnier than THIS.......2006-05-14

Let's get something straight, my pee-peeing fans: Stallone was NOT trying to follow in Arnold's footsteps with his comedies of the early '90s. He was RETURNING to a genre that he dabbled in before Arnie became known as a comedic screen presence. Remember 1984's "Rhinestone"? That was a genuinely funny musical-comedy that Stallone co-wrote. Why did it bomb at the box office? Your guess is as good as mine - I think that the critical buzz (which was bad) helped kill the film. But that's beside the point, which is that Sly had already proven comedic acting chops well in advance of "Stop or My Mom Will Shoot" and the previous year's farcical "Oscar."

Another myth to dispel: people claim that this movie was a commercial failure. Not true, dear readers. While it may have only grossed $28 million domestically (which is actually around the 40 million mark when adjusted for inflation), this rather modestly-budgeted film was a considerable money-maker internationally (which was where Mr. Stallone's bread was buttered for most of the '90s). Why did it do middling box office here in the states? Honestly, the pairing of Sly and 'Golden Girl'Estelle Getty - though comedically inspired and full of potential - was not smart demographically speaking. How many Sly's action fanbase were going to take something like this seriously? Conversely, how many grannies (i.e. the majority of 'Golden Girls' fans) were going to go see a loud, brash action-comedy (featuring a certain amount of violence and bad language)? Neither of the stars' fanbase were on board.

So what does that leave us with? A strangely unengaging hybrid - most of the jokes fall flat, and most of the action sequences feel generic and TV-movieish. Yes, you'll laugh at the sight of Sly in a diaper (during a nightmare sequence) but you'll groan at the sight of Estelle trying to wash her son's gun with standard household cleaning products. One great line: Estelle's infamous one-liner to her son: "Go ahead - make your bed."

The DVD is surprisingly robust, all things considered. The movie is presented in a very attractive widescreen transfer, along with a couple of bonus features. There is a short - but very entertaining - behind-the-scenes featurette. Yes, it's a fairly typical EPK puff piece, but there is some amusing footage of Getty and Stallone clowning together. Also included is an intriguing alternate ending. I say intriguing because it is clearly taken from an even longer sequence of deleted scenes (not included on the dvd), since on it's own it barely makes any sense. Still interesting to see, because the third act of this movie apparently was originally much different (and more action-oriented). I only wish that more deleted footage had been included.

3 out of 5 stars ...Stallone and Getty's chemistry is the worst since Stallone and Parton!.......2006-01-30

Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot is a comedy directed by Roger Spottiswoode (Turner And Hooch) and starring Sylvester Stallone (Rocky), Estelle Getty (TV sitcom The Golden Girls), and JoBeth Williams (Poltergeist).

Stallone plays Joey Bomowski, an LA cop who gets a surprise visit from his mother Tutti, played by Getty. She's in town to clean up Joey's house, clean up his crumbling love life with his boss Gwen, played by Williams, and clean up the city as she partners up with her son to catch some bad guys who were involved in a crime that she is the only witness to. Joey, on the other hand, must deal with his mother showing everybody she meets his baby pictures, washing his gun with water and soap, and feeding him breakfast (the most important meal of the day!)

The movie is silly but mildly entertaining. Getty and Stallone's onscreen chemistry is the worst since Dolly Parton and Stallone's duet performance in Rhinestone. However, the film manages to pull some funny moments that you can't resist but laugh to.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointing waste of widescreen photography.......2006-03-29

I thought if I finally watched "Manhattan Baby" on DVD in widescreen rather than the poor full-screen video copies of it that were previously available, I'd be able to re-appraise it, but sadly, I still find that it's among Lucio Fulci's worst efforts. Fulci displays no evidence whatsoever in this movie that he knows what to shoot to make an interesting or suspenseful film. Half the time, he can find nothing worth putting in front of the lens except extreme close-ups of the actors eyes. Time and time again, the camera zooms in for lingering close-ups of the actors eyes, when there could have been - there must have been - so many other creative possibilities to choose from...did nobody point this out?

Anyway, whatever the artistic "vision" was supposed to be, the story goes roughly as follows: A husband and wife take their young daughter on a trip to Egypt, so that the husband can investigate an ancient tomb, and the wife can take pictures of all the tourist sights. The daughter, Suzy, wanders off alone and is ambushed by an Egyptian crone who gives her a mysterious amulet. (Cue the first of many extreme close-ups of eyes, and of the amulet, which also bears the design of an eye). At the same time the husband is blinded by a flash of blue light that emanates from a forbidden burial chamber that he has just discovered. Back in New York, the family is reunited with Suzy's younger brother Tommy (played by the same child actor who played Bob in "House By The Cemetery" ), and their nanny. From this point on, Suzy begins to act strangely, wandering about the house (cue extreme close-ups of eyes), scaring the nanny by playing odd hide and seek games with Tommy (cue more extreme close-ups of eyes), and putting the amulet in various random places for some unfathomable kind of dramatic focus (cue more extreme close-ups of the amulet). While all this inconsequential nonsense is going on, the parents of the children drift in and out of the action, occasionally looking fraught or troubled at the goings on (cue more close ups of eyes, naturally). A few people die in unremarkable ways. The end of the film sees Suzy fall more perilously under the spell of the amulet (cue more close-ups of the amulet) and the struggle to save her by a mysterious antique shop owner who comes to visit Suzy and tells the worried family that he can undo the curse (cue more close-ups of eyes).

Watching this film is only slightly more fun than watching paint dry. Fulci seems to have entirely run out of ideas about how to make a film that is visually stimulating - there is nothing even approaching interesting on the screen for about 90% of the running time. Just endless talking heads and those never ending eye close-ups. The trademark gore scenes are all but absent, save for one right near the end when a character is attacked by stuffed birds. The slant that the birds are stuffed rather than alive - having supposedly been re-animated by the evil power - is quite a good one, but sadly you can see the wires carrying them around the room in EVERY SINGLE shot during the attack. At least there were some good old-school close ups of bloody flesh-pecking to wake me up at this stage, but the film was over an hour and twenty minutes through by this time...far too late for redeeming the movie as a whole.

The dubbing is also terrible, the worst I have seen for a long time. Especially of the children. When an instant photo turns out badly, Suzy exclaims chirpily "It's a dud, defective stock!"...What the...? And when the parents ask where the babysitter has vanished to, young Tommy exlaims "She's gone on a voyage!" A voyage? What 8 year old boy uses words like "voyage"? It's almost a shame to see poor Giovanni Frezza, who appears to be an unselfconscious and lively child actor, crippled by such a hideous dubbed script. At least be thankful he does not have the same sounding voice he had in "The House by the Cemetery", which similarly ruined his character. But the fault lies way beyond pinning this on lame performances (Although I would have loved to see Katherine MaColl take the role as the mother rather than the lacklustre Martha Taylor, and Christopher Connelly is equally forgettable as the father.). There is really nothing worth keeping your attention on the screen for. A passably attractive prologue filmed on location in Egypt soon gives way to the rest of the film almost entirely taking place in the family's nondescript apartment. The antique shops looks like the set of the basement from "The House by the Cemetery" with just the cobwebs removed, and even the music is lifted from previous Fulci films, most notably some very recogniseable music from "The Beyond". How any self-respecting director can just re-use a score that was (one would presume) originally composed to match the story and atmosphere of one of his previous films is beyond me.

The plot, as usual, does not serve up anything cohesive to the audience, so without any arresting visuals or jolting gore scenes, watching the film is a pretty boring experience. There's no climactic ending, just a rather tame suggestion of the cyclical recurrence of the evil curse, the origins or intentions of which are never explained anyway during the entire plot. And as if you hadn't had enough by now, the film closes with - yes you guessed it - more extreme close ups of eyes and another, final (thank god!) close up of the wretched amulet, not that the sight of it produced any sense of dread throughout the whole dreary story. I will allow that there have been reports of imposed conditions behind the making of "Manhattan Baby" that lead Fulci to make some severe compromises, but he has to take responibility for what he delivered to his audience, and he should be ashamed of the undeniable weakness of the end result.

3 out of 5 stars Not that bad at all !.......2005-09-12

Lucio Fulci's "MANHATTAN BABY" is not even close to his best effort, but just like "SWEET HOUSE OF HORROR" it has its tiny moments of Fulci's atmospheric & gorey brilliance. A sure shot for Fulci fans! all others should rent before buying!

2 out of 5 stars Fulci Misses The Mark.......2004-03-28

Italian horror will never be seen as art to the masses. Even the hardcore fans admit to the cheesiness as being part of the attraction to them, but even though it's a trashy kind of genre, you can screw up! Lucio Fulci screwed up here. To people now taking an interest in Fulci, I'm sure this dvd cover has stared out at you from the shelf at the store and beckoned you to take it home . Don't listen to it! Yeah, it's Fulci, and yeah, it's from Anchor Bay, but don't let that fool you. Manhattan Baby is BAD, even for a Fulci film. With most of his horror films you could always guarantee to have a fun viewing experience, but this is actually quite painful. Everything you love about his previous works is nowhere to be found here. Fulci was actually trying to make a real horror film with suspense and stuff. Many directors accomplish this, but Fulci never has, and he certainly doesn't here. Fulci's films excel in atmosphere, music, gore, cheesiness and just downright strangeness. This film has none of that. It's basically a reworking of the Charleton Heston mummy flick, The Awakening-which was no masterpiece, but better than this. The only purpose this dvd will serve is to make your Italian horror dvd collection look bigger, coz it will get only one or maybe two viewings-mark my words! You just may be better off investing in a Kiss Koffin. That will at least get more use.

4 out of 5 stars Why I Never Wanted a Sandbox.......2002-06-28

Manhattan Baby, considered a failure by many critics that wanted Fulci to conform to the formula of horror that made him successful, was actually one of his more entertaining movies. This was because it did break from the proverbial mould, building more on a storyline and an ever-present, overwhelming scene of doom. Unlike many of his earlier movies (Zombie, The Beyond) that brought this bleak overview with them as well, Lucio decided to try a new avenue in this presentation, one that only briefly sprinkled gore into the cinematic formula, causing much of the fallout experienced. He said that he wanted to present a more metaphysical terror, using a small array of special effects in the process, that would give his film a more Catholicist, "evil can be beaten but not truly destroyed," mentality. Well, mission accomplished.
The storyline, with its Egyptian focal point, deals with the manifestation of an ancient evil that is awaken (and overused) by a little girl after her foolishly curious archeologist father prods at things best left alone. It has some nice scenes with pieces of dark humor mixed together with catchy "manifesations/proofs of the dark forces present," plus some humorously cheap scenes that keep the movie from taking itself too serious. All in all, its fun and a bit dark at the same time, and is a good film for horror lovers/Lucio fans that remember his Sci-fi trials/Westerners and not simply his gore films.

GROWING PAIN's Tracey Gold gets to bear her fangs as a psychotic young woman who kills people and takes their identities. Her latest: she kills a young college student and assumes her place at a ritzy little college where she sets her sights on her roomie's hunky and rich dad.
Gold is quite good in the role, and she gets good support from Perry King as the dad and Shawnee Smith (SAW movies) as her goody two shoes roommate.
It's all been done before but Gold is so despicable, you want to see her get her just desserts...but...no spoiler here!

"Face of Evil" is one of my favorite made-for-TV movies ever! I Am so glad that is has finally been released on DVD. It is basically about a young woman who kills a college student and takes her identity. The cast is great, most notably Tracey Gold, playing very much against type, and Shawnee Smith. I am a fan of both of them, and they did not disappoint here. Mary Lambert is also a fine director, and I think she helped bring this film a notch above the rest. If you are a fan of Tracey, Shawnee, Lambert, or just good, fun thrillers, "Face of Evil" is the perfect film for you!

The DVD is in Full Frame format, but the transfer is pretty good. It has been digitally remastered, and features interactive menus and chapter selections!

4 out of 5 stars Worth inheriting.......2006-12-08

If "Little Women" is the novel wrapped around Jo March, then "The Inheritance" is her sister Beth -- small and unnoticed, but sweet and beautiful all the same. This lovely period TV movie is (very loosely) based on the mediocre novel of the same name, by the classic author Louisa May Alcott, and this is one of the few instances where the movie is vastly better than the book.

Edith Adelon (Cari Shayne) has lived with the wealthy Hamilton family ever since she was a baby, and is now the companion of bookish Amy (Brigitta Dau), and a good horsewoman to boot. But her life changes with the arrival of two guests at the Hamiltons' home: the beautiful, calculating Ida (Brigid Conley Walsh) and handsome James Percy (Thomas Gibson).

James and Edith are drawn together first as friends, and then by something deeper. But Ida, who wants him for herself, manipulates Edith into rejecting James when he proposes to her. Then after Edith takes place in a famed horse race, mysterious thefts and a family tragedy threaten to derail her entire life with the Hamiltons.

Louisa May Alcott wrote "The Inheritance" when she was only seventeen, and the book is syrupy, over-romancitized and cliched. But the movie "The Inheritance" is what Alcott probably would have turned the book into, had she rewritten it instead of burying it in a trunk. The wilting lily Edith is replaced with a strong, friendly young woman, and the plot is spiced up with some social commentary.

To some degree, it's a typical love-conquers-all romance, and the dialogue borders on cheesy at times, although overall the scripting pretty good. It's the execution that is likeable. The characters ramble around lush manorhouses full of light and beauty, or idyllic forests. And the gooey romance is glossed over with some sharp commentary on stuffy traditions and hypocrisies, such as why women were not allowed to ride astride. Also a touch of tragedy, when one of the characters dies.

Cari Shayne is quite good as Edith, especially since she has to be so NICE all the time. Such a character could have been nauseating instead of nice, and she has some nice chemistry with Gibson. Walsh is not so good, but the rest of the supporting cast are excellent as the loving, quirky Hamiltons.

"The Inheritance" takes the same-named novel and rips it apart, turns it inside out, reembroiders it and sticks it back together -- and the result is remarkably polished and strong. Louisa May Alcott would have been proud.

  • The Key Word Here is FUN.
  • FEATHER-WEIGHT ROMP
  • Not as good as I had hoped. DOUBLE WHAMMY is much better.
  • A fun movie...
