I went on a debt reduction program on my own at 42 years old and now at 45 I am debt free. I recommend that you buy this DVD at any price. I also recommend that you don't watch it alone. Let some others benefit from the knowledge of what debt has and is doing to our society. Even if they don't do anything about it at least they will have the education of how the debt system works.

Americans spend more money than they make and that's the modern trend in today's society. This stems from the fact that it is so convenient to live this way but it is also a progressive danger to consumers and the economy.
The public faces a daily barrage of advertisements for credit cards and lending options and it filters down to everyone in all walks of life. In 2005 alone, the top 10 credit card companies spent over 2 billion dollars in advertising.

Commercials have been shown to use subtle and creative messages to tap into your subconscious desire to spend money but no attempts are made to educate individuals about any fiscal responsibilities. The situation is even worse when you realize that many companies have inflated interest rates, they overcharge on late fees, and some often misappropriate confidential consumer information such as you personal credit history.

Looking at the dilemma of this debt crisis begs the question of what is going wrong. A big element is the fact that rising costs of healthcare, housing, education, and consumer goods hurts so many and credit and lending play a significant part here. The federal government is another factor that does not favor the consumer and hurts you more than it helps. Recent bankruptcy reform initiated by President Bush now makes it more difficult for persons to file bankruptcy and recover from financial hardship. Powerful lobbyists in Washington are very influential in helping to manipulate fiscal policies and financial institutions are the number one contributors to political campaigns.

There really isn't any happy ending in sight to this widespread problem but there is a growing light at the end of the tunnel. Consumer advocate groups are becoming more prominent nowadays and their attempts at debt education and awareness are steadily working their way into mainstream society. Any type of help whatsoever is productive and necessary for everyone affected and this keeps the hope alive that we can eventually make significant progress in overcoming our huge dependency on borrowed money and credit.

`In Debt We Trust' really appealed to me because it was quite comprehensive in how much material it covered and because it was presented in an easy to understand and straightforward manner. For informational and educational purposes, I would seriously recommend this documentary to everyone.

I made my teenager watch this movie, just so he can be aware of how corporate American busineses profit of the working class.

I loved this movie when it originally came out. The casting is spot on and this Blu-ray edition shows it off like it was meant to be seen. A definite must have for any fan of Depp, Pacino, and mobster flicks.

SENSATIONAL MOB FLICK...GRIM AND GRITTY..........2007-03-26

This griity and grim mob flick, deftly directed by Mike Newell, is based upon the true story of FBI undercover, Joe Pistone, who. as his alter ego "Donnie Brasco", infiltrated the mob for a number of years, resulting in its eventual decimation. So artfully did the real Joe Pistone infiltrate and so well did he do his job, that he and his family were obliged to enter the witness protection program for their safety, as a contract was ultimately put out on Joe Pistone's life.

Here, Johnny Depp, plays the role of Joe Pistone/Donnie Brasco. He is terrific in the role, and the viewer watches him become absorbed by the lifestyle of the mobsters with whom he associates. He is befriended by "Lefty" Ruggierro, artfully played Al Pacino. Shifty and
common, "Lefty" typifies your low level made guy, the guy on the fringes doing the dirty work, a real bottom feeder. He is the guy who does the hits, and he is the guy the higher ups look to whack when something goes wrong. It is not an enviable or glamourous life, as has been made out by other films, such as the "Godfather" and "Goodfellas". The existence of "Lefty" and the legions like him is gritty and grim, always a bridesmaid and never a bride.

"Lefty" takes Brasco under his wing and vouches for him. He shows Brasco the ABCs of becoming a "made" guy. "Lefty" himself wants to move up in the mob hierarchy. It soon becomes painfully obvious that that ain't gonna happen. One cannot help feel a little sorry for "Lefty", so limited is his world view and so at the mercy of others. Still, "Lefty" gives Donnie some invaluable lessons on mob etiquette. He also unburdens himself to Donnie, treating him as if he were his adopted son. The bond between the two men grows. As this happens, Donnie finds himself being pulled more and more into the world of mobsters, until his old and new reality begin to merge.

As he distances himself drom his wife (Anne Heche) and family, Brasco is thrust into a maelstrom of mob violence that threatens to tear him apart and consume him. He tries to get "Lefty" to go straight and retire, in hope of avoiding his betrayal. It is to no avail. Brasco, in for a penny, in for a pound, now stands to become a "made" guy himself. It is only at the eleventh hour that an intervention set up by the FBI plays itself out, setting up the betrayal of "Lefty". It is a sad moment for Brasco, as he knows that "Lefty" has just been handed a death sentence at the hands of the mob for vouching for an FBI agent. It is Brasco's ultimate salvation, however, as he was on the brink of committing an unpardonable act, one in which he would have crossed the line and from which there would have been no turning back. It is a decision that was, luckily for him, taken out of his hands.

Al Pacino gives the defining, superlative performance in this film. Anne Heche is sensational as the put upon, concerned wife, who watches her husband change into someone she can barely recognize. Johnny Depp, likewise, gives a stellar performance as the angst ridden FBI undercover agent. All in all, a terrific film with a stellar cast and well worth having in one's collection.

A glossy romantic comedy, The Best Man centers on four college friends and the women in their lives, all brought back together for a wedding. Taye Diggs (How Stella Got Her Groove Back) plays the title character, a young writer whose first novel is a barely fictionalized account of his college days, featuring barely fictionalized versions of all his friends. This novel hasn't yet been released, but ambitious TV producer Nia Long (Soul Food) has snagged an advance copy in the hopes of getting an early interview with Diggs. Unfortunately, when this advance copy begins circulating among the college gang, they discover it reveals some secrets that may have a disastrous effect on the wedding. The Best Man features a handsome, charming cast and a propulsive story, but the female characters are poorly developed and the male banter is, to say the least, chauvinistic. This banter is mostly to comic effect, but by the end it still leaves a sour taste that the movie's happy ending doesn't counter. With a particularly strong performance by Terrence Howard as an aimless but relentlessly honest member of the college quartet. --Bret Fetzer

The Best part.....the whole movie was done with thought-out class........2007-06-20

The beauty of this movie is that it truly likes and cares about the people inhabiting it. There are no cheap jokes or sight gags. The humor develops from real situations and real characters starting with Harper Stewart (Taye Diggs). Life is good for Harper. His first novel is about to be published. He is in a comfortable two-year relationship and it is the weekend of the wedding of Lance (Morris Chesnut) and Mia (Monica Calhoun), two of his closest college friends. The bad news is his novel is a thinly veiled account of his college years and an advance copy of the book has found it's way into the hands of another college friend, Jordan (Nia Long). Jordan has in turn read the book and passed it along to Harper's inncer circle of college freinds. The really bad news is now the advance copy is in the hands of the groom, Lance. And Lance will not be happy by what he reads.

The film is well performed across the board although special mention needs to be made of Taye Diggs in the lead. Diggs perfectly captures the arrogance and the fear of commitment that makes the character of Harper work. Morris Chesnut is also quite good as the groom Lance. Lance is a star running back who is torn by his love for Mia and all the oppurtunies his "star" status provides. Mia really has become the rock in this world, his key to becoming a better man and Christian. When Lance finally gets to the chapter that Harper has been so afraid of him reading his entire world is shaken and nothing is on solid ground. Chesnut nails the sense of frustration of a man who all of a sudden finds his house is build on quicksand. Powerful stuff and again, none of it seems forced or pushed. The victory for virtue as defined by this film, however, is not easy and does not rely on conventional finger waging notions and stereotypes. In fact, the most interesting and best acted character is Quentin (Terrence Dashon Howard). He slyly and wisely presents the argument that we are not meant to be monogamous, but he is consistent in not expecting men and women to live by a double standard. He is in many ways correctly cynical about all of his friends and the rest of us. It is a testament to confident story telling when a character presents a contradictory position so well. In addition, Quentin is hilariously madcap with his quips.

When we finally get to the wedding and hear the vows of the groom and bride as a celebration of their commitment and union, the movie literally blooms with sweetness and beauty. This may sound corny, but when it is well done as it was here, we have insatiable appetites for seeing people face their selfish expectations and hypocrisy to become true partners in love and life. It is of note that Spike Lee's company produced this movie. Apparently, the able writer-director, Malcolm D. Lee, is a relative. The setting is affluent, literate, intelligent, success driven, neurotically yuppie and entirely African-American. (We don't recall seeing a white face on the screen.) In this, Best Man offers a refreshing and powerful diversion from the heaviness of urban blight and racial oppression as the world of blacks on film. As real as these phenomena are, blacks are diverse in their accomplishments and social strata.

It's too bad Jack Bauer was busy solving an international terrorist crisis. As seen with unflinching eyes in this wickedly entertaining documentary, Kiefer Sutherland could have used the organizational powers of his 24-star alter-ego to help him with his duties as road manager of a burgeoning rock band. Sutherland is exposed as steadfast devotee of Rocco DeLuca & The Burden as he tries his best to manage the details of the band's brief winter, 2005 tour of Europe. In addition to his career as a famous actor, Sutherland is also co-founder of the indie record label Ironworks Music, and as I Trust You to Kill Me proves, he's clearly the #1 fan of Ironworks' up-and-comers Rocco DeLuca & The Burden. The band's tour of small clubs took them to London, Dublin, Reykjavík, Berlin, and points in between. Director Manu Boyer lets his camera linger over the best and worst of it all. Some of the worst is of Sutherland as he ineptly (but utterly sincerely) tries to pump the band up at every opportunity, whether it's doing radio promos, hauling heavy amps into a London nightclub in the freezing cold, or slyly handing out tickets in Dublin pubs and street corners for an undersold show. It's hilarious to see him simultaneously exploiting and enjoying his celebrity status with passersby--some of whom know who he is, others only vaguely realizing that they ought to know who he is. Director Boyer also does some nosy prodding into Sutherland's private life, especially after he's hefted a few pints (the clip of Sutherland taking a drunken running dive into the Christmas tree in a posh London hotel was brief a YouTube smash after the film first aired on VH-1). We see the crawling-up end of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle from Sutherland's point of view and from the band's. Though it's certainly not the best rock concert movie, there is some terrific footage of The Burden performing their bloozy brand of rock behind DeLuca's raw wail. In spite of Sutherland's "help," the band may have a good chance at gaining a following. I Trust You to Kill Me (the title of The Burden's first album) documents both a personal journey for Kiefer Sutherland and a glimpse at the hardscrabble of a band clawing their way up. On both counts it's great fun and a terrific piece of rock 'n' roll entertainment. --Ted Fry

This movie is great, you feel you are traveling with Kiefer Sutherland and the band all the way there and back.

Need More Like It.......2007-05-13

It's too bad more bands/managers don't take the time to make these music documentary films. There is definitely a market for them. This one was presented perfectly. I purchased it prior to the bands CD, so I hadn't heard the astounding range of Rocco Delucca's voice. What an amazing vocalist! This DVD is well worth it simply for that experience. Kiefer drinks and smokes much too much, but the DVD reveals a very personable side of him.

Entertaining and Insiteful.......2007-04-10

This documentary gave me a view of life for a new band trying to make it. It is also a big name actor "Kiefer Sutherland" letting viewers in on his life in an amazingly personal way. I loved the band and their music. I thought the DVD was entertaining, funny and touching.

The real value is deeper...........2007-03-22

For me this is ultimately about Kiefer. A grown man who has tremendous success but at this point in his life seems very sad and lonely. Still looking for his father's love and approval. Still looking for something more meaningful. Having been a hugh fan of Kiefer's for years and having watched his career highs and lows over the last 20+ years, most of the intimate conversations with Kiefer in this documentary brought me to tears.
It is well worth seeing. The band is great and you can easily see how Kiefer became such a big fan. I can't help but feel he was trying to live out a boyhood fantasy (of being a rock star) that didn't turn out as he hoped it would.

The term suspension of disbelief was invented for the idea that Ryan Phillippe could be a computer genius. As Milo, a slacker brainiac recruited by smilingly ominous software giant Gary Winston (Tim Robbins) to help build a global communications system, Phillippe still looks like a million bucks. He is also still doing the clenched, pouty grown-up voice that he always uses to show that he means business in this acting stuff (he's nothing if not earnest), and a pair of designer glasses completes the transformation. He's well matched in Antitrust by Claire Forlani, who, in turn, spends time pursing her lips and squinting her dewy eyes as Milo's troubled girlfriend, an artist who proves to be a liability when Milo discovers that Winston is killing off clever competitors like a dot-com führer. Robbins, looking like David Letterman, seems willing to either take his role dead seriously or goof around a bit, but director Peter Howitt doesn't know how to play any of it (the actor was better used as a grinning madman in another flawed paranoid thriller, the underseen Arlington Road). Without any underlying menace or enough satirical bite to keep it interesting, the whole thing slips by passively in a mindless matinee kind of way until the over-the-top finale. Production designer Catherine Hardwicke has had some big, glossy fun creating Winston's campus and ornate private kingdom, and there's the cheapest of kicks in seeing Robbins's Bill Gates taken down publicly, but the film is definitely junior league. --Steve Wiecking

Antitrust.......2007-03-02

The problem stated up front: the film isn't frightening enough. The film isn't frightening enough mainly because the lead character, Milo--played by Ryan Phillippe--never seems to be in mortal danger. And no matter what sinister mess the star of the show may find him or herself snarled up in--if the stakes aren't high enough, to the point where the hero looks seriously in trouble of surviving, you have what is ultimately a minor-league thriller.

This is a story of a computer whiz who signs on as the new Golden Boy of a software company called NURV, owned by Gary Winston (Tim Robbins giving a very strong performance), who has brazenly set a target-date for the unveiling of a revolutionary new communications system for PCs, handhelds, etc.--sort of a Unified Field breakthrough for worldwide chat--that will make him very wealthy. If the system, SYNAPSE, doesn't work on time, Winston is a joke. Milo, boy genius, must get all the worst bugs out of Gary Winston's brain-child before time runs out, but just as he's settling in--and getting the red-carpet treatment from everyone at the firm, including the resident Ice Queen, Lisa (Rachel Leigh Cook)--he's thrown a bit of a curve: Gary Winston keeps providing him with mysterious computer discs, full of radical new code, that will help Milo make the big breakthroughs. Milo can't make sense of it; if he's the big saviour, where's all the brilliant code coming from? His boss's smarmy shell cracks when Milo asks questions, and Milo gets a face full of a Gary Winston paranoid tantrum, his first clue that his ambitious employer is not the nice guy he seems to be.

But how far would Gary Winston go to get what he wants? Is he procuring other programmers' code illegally, and if so, how? Milo starts to deduce pieces of the truth that suggest coincidences aren' t always coincidences, and then someone close to him suffers a senseless tragedy. Coincidence? A shocked Milo enlists the aid of his girlfriend Alice (Claire Forlani), and even some old buddies he snubbed earlier in the film merely by going to work for supreme capitalist, to subvert all the cutting-edge security features at NURV, and even in Winston's home, to find out the real truth about the people he works for. Along the way, Milo discovers he may have more hidden enemies than he thought.

That's the tense summary of the plot...now let me list all the things that sabotage the thrills:

Except for Tim Robbins, none of the bad guys are very scary. Robbins's main henchman is the guy who played Doctor Tom in Ed Wood (friendly face, nerdy-looking (sorry, fella), practically bald, calm throughout).

Ryan Phillippe's character always seems to be one step ahead of the bad guys, certainly once he gets a whiff of what's really going on. He pulls various clever tricks that allow him to move about areas of NURV that would normally be off-limits, and even when the bad guys know what he's up to, Milo KNOWS they know, but they allow him some leeway, because of course Gary Winston still needs SYNAPSE completed. This creates a very interesting cat-and-mouse game but it seriously destroys any real threat to Milo, certainly for the bulk of the story. It feels like a game. It doesn't feel like anyone is ever going to just appear out of the shadows and point a gun in Milo's face and get rid of him, or even put a bomb in his desk-drawer.

There's no grime in this film. Everything's polished, neat, shiny, pristine, new-looking, sanitized, orderly, whatever. There's no dirt anywhere; even the nightly shadows of NURV seem disinfected. I would argue that, on a psychological level, a thriller needs some dirt, some blurriness, some clutter, a back alley with some piles of rubbish thugs can hide behind. This film's director seems to like things neat and stainless-steely and nonthreatening (see also Johnny English). Thrillers need some dirt, and some unidentified shapes tucked in the shadows.

Finally--as I've alluded to already--though there are chase scenes, Milo-hiding scenes, Milo in danger of being deliberately fed Sesame seeds scenes (he's fatally allergic), Milo afraid to trust someone scenes--the truth is, Milo usually knows when he is in danger before danger has a chance to strike. And the one time he's caught totally by surprise, he makes an ally.

I think Claire Forlani is a most beautiful actress, and she, along with everyone else in the film, gives a strong performance. This film even features an uncredited appearance by one of my favourite actors, David Clennon (he played the creepy boss in ThirtySomething, appeared as slimey "Radio Doctor" Norris Breeze in an episode of WKRP In Cincinnati, appears in John Carpenter's The Thing and Being There, and, uh, an episode of Sledge Hammer!), but he's barely in it--strange! The whole film is strangely watchable, despite the fact that it is never as thrilling as it could have been.

Fantastic triller.......2007-01-25

Watching this film will change your life. It's a fantstic thriller, with a few good scares in there too. The gorgeous Ryan Phillipe stars as Milo, a computer genius.

The story unfolds as milo, starts a job in a exclusive computer company.
All is not as it seems in this brilliant company, as Milo's life gets turned upside down.

Recommended for everybody.

A quality film with a good young cast........2006-11-17

Featuring an awesome young cast and the legendary Tim Robbins, this is an exciting cyber-thriller that will have you thinking one thing then surprise you with another twist. While the story may seem unbelievable, it is quality viewing, and anyone who likes a good thriller will have no trouble sitting through it. Still good to watch even after the first time, a good DVD to add to anyone's collection. Will appeal mostly to teenagers and young adults, it will stand up to the tests of time.

Danger from Monopoly.......2006-10-08

Will "Synapse" be launched on schedule? Yes. They will do whatever it takes. The start of the film suggests a few graduate students with little money, experience, and connections can create successful software today. Do they know their customer's needs? There isn't much of a market for shareware anymore. Software comes bundled with computers, and most users don't care. (Unless paid advertising can change their minds.)

Milo shows up at NURV to begin work. Their office is "open", which can create interruptions that affect productivity. One TV news item tells of a competitor who is killed in a car crash; drugs were found in his system. Milo is impressed by some code and wonders where it came from; Gary Winston flies off the handle at this question. Highly sensitive? There is a mysterious attack on a friend of Milo's. Teddy had been close to an exciting discovery! Milo finds that a fiberglass cable allowed spying on Teddy. Who did it?

Milo reports his lost badge; this allows him entry to security, and a chance to snoop into the system. Soon Milo starts acting like a detective. He finds a system that contains private information on many of his friends. How can a powerful corporation arrange to hire criminals? What if they can also influence the Department of Justice? Research show how NURV is connected with major corporations. [Does this remind you of "Big Brother" in Orwell's 1984?] Wearing a tuxedo, Milo manages to find some IP addresses from Gary's private system. But Milo is suspected, and they plot his demise: Milo has an allergy and can suffer anaphylactic shock! So what is in that meal? Milo "borrows" a server to expose the conspiracy; he gets away with it! But his company car is bugged so they can follow him! Action and conflict follow, with more surprises.

Reviews aren't supposed to give away the ending, but we know the good guys must win in the end. "The Net" was a much better film, this one seems like another version. A work of fiction can guarantee a happy ending. We know what is happening in the real world. The film ends on a false claim. The coding created by anyone does not become "open code" by saying so. This statement is not made about any other work product, like a loaf of bread.

Back in August 1994 I saw a TV news item that showed "Gary Winston" and "White House Bill" meeting for a golf date. Each carried an identical gym bag to their golf cart. At the end they each carried away one of the identical gym bags. Afterwards the Department of Justice dropped its antitrust investigation. How many $100 bills could fit into one of those gym bags?

Heavy-Handed but Pretty Good.......2005-09-09

Antitrust is one of those movies filled with lots of great ideas and even some brilliant execution, but suffers from the weight of its own plot. Because one of the central themes of the film is open-source (allowing everyone in the world to see the code of your programs so they can alter or improve it), this point ends up taking over the entire story and (sadly) trumps character. As a result, some of the people aren't as fleshed out as they should be, and the main character's arc is a bit muted.

Nevertheless, the movie is still quite a lot of fun. The climax of the film is a nice payoff for viewers and the very end isn't too sentimental (though a bit heavy-handed with the "moral of the story").

It's worth viewing. Consider renting if you've never seen it before, in case this kind of movie isn't for you.

For a sex comedy, Bart Freundlich's fourth feature Trust the Man takes many of its cues from 1980s-era Woody Allen, but is neither as sexy nor as funny as intended. It's the tale of two couples. Rebecca (Julianne Moore, Freundlich's real-life wife) is an actress. Her husband, Tom (David Duchovny, Moore's Evolution co-star), is a stay-at-home dad, much like Patrick Wilson's character in the considerably darker Little Children. The Manhattan dwellers have two kids. Fellow New Yorker Elaine (Maggie Gyllenhaal), an aspiring author, lives with Rebecca's brother, Tobey (Billy Crudup, sporting an ill-advised goatee), a sports writer. They've been together for seven years. Elaine is ready for marriage and a baby; Toby, not so much. Both men have roving eyes, Tom for single mother Pamela (Dagmara Dominczyk) and Tobey for ex-girlfriend Faith (Eva Mendes), a newlywed. Rebecca and Elaine, in their sincerity, may be more sympathetic, but all they ever seem to talk about is their unsatisfactory sex lives. Naturally, something has to give and it does--for all four. On the downside, Trust the Man finds Freundlich in a bit of a holding pattern. In retrospect, domestic drama The Myth of Fingerprints, Freundlich's first film, is still the writer/director's best. Though James LeGros and Duchovny pal Garry Shandling provide amusing cameos, the main reason to catch Trust the Man is for Duchovny himself in his most fully realized role since the inimitable Agent Fox Mulder--oddly likable despite his many faults. --Kathleen C. Giving it 5 cause I believe it has been way under rated. I believe the object was to laugh, and it was entertaining.

Besides I feel it did address valid points that many people shy away from, death, living life, etc.

I think this film is just misunderstood. We aren't supposed to take is seriously. From the beginning sequence with the little boy on the toilet, and the Duchovny character talking about "...just gas...," you know its going to be terrible. And it continues, all the way through to the horrible embarrassment of an ending, to completely fulfill that expectation.

So terrible, it is actually entertaining. Its fun to think about whatever production company funded this movie and trusted the director and screenwriter, and then found they had a complete failure!

Don't blame the actors, however. Each one fulfilled their expectations. Julianne Moore was superficial and shallow. Perfect for her character, who asks her husband to stay home with the kids, ignores his sexual needs, then wonders why he isn't happy. David Duchovny, who always looks like he hasn't slept in days, is perfect in the role of trying to take care of two kids as a stay at home Dad. Billy Crudup was born to play a man who behaves like a nine-year old. Maggie Gyllenhaal, is brilliant as usual. Unfortunately, because of this, she wrecks the entire "I can't believe this is so bad" premise of the movie, because you have to admire her amazing acting ability.

And to top it off, what about that title? If there is one message in this movie, its that you CAN'T "Trust the Man." Horrible! Wonderful! (See my point?)

See past the terrible judgement, bad writing, and weak directing. Its fun!

Sophomoric At Best.......2007-03-17

This movie strains too hard to be about "adulthood" and relationships. It has no depth because it is apparently too close to home for those involved (moore and her husband), and apparently they don't have the life experience to make anything that rises above all the silly cliches in this movie. Read the review by "the most annoying movie I have", he/she hits on the head. It is sad because of the talent involved, including moore. Even Billy Crudup fails to shine.

Glossy Woody Allen Wannabe Relationship Comedy Falls Far Too Short.......2007-02-24

Director/screenwriter Bart Freundlich's open valentine to Woody Allen's classic relationship comedies of the 1970's and 80's is a glossy-looking 2006 misfire partially redeemed by the sharp if somewhat misshapen performances of the four principals. Freundlich seems more infatuated with his favorite Lower Manhattan locales than realistically dissecting the rather insufferable characters complicating their lives with the gamesmanship of modern romance. More often than not, the result feels smug and half-baked for all the futile effort the cast puts into it. The focus is on two New York couples. Rebecca is a successful film actress making her first foray into theater, and her husband Tom is a former advertising whiz who decides to become a stay-at-home dad to their two children. Rebecca's brother Tobey is a commitment-phobic sportswriter more interested in keeping his highly valued parking spot than marrying his overly accepting girlfriend of seven years, Elaine, an aspiring children's book author.

Their lives intertwine at trendy eateries with heavy dialogue scenes that are woefully missing Allen's insightful wit despite Freundlich's intensive efforts. The inevitable complications ensue when each couple reaches a crisis stage forcing them to take action. As Rebecca, Julianne Moore, who happens to be Freundlich's wife, cannot help but be appealing, even though her character's intimacy issues are presented in rather broad strokes. A far cry from her haunting work in "Sherrybaby", Maggie Gyllenhaal expresses Elaine's passivity with a convincing winsomeness. David Duchovny's poker-faced performance as Tom comes across as self-satisfied rather than insightful about a husband's sense of self-worth. In the toughest role, a surprisingly comic Billy Crudup shows his versatility in bringing out the irresponsible slacker in Tobey, but his motivation for inaction is poorly sketched out.

Eva Mendes, Garry Shandling and Ellen Barkin appear in extended cameos that really do little to take advantage of their talents. And unfortunately, matters are not helped by a finale that leaves an artificial aftertaste. Special mention, however, should go to Tim Orr's clean cinematography, which makes New York look most inviting. The 2007 DVD is one of those irritating double-sided single discs that have the widescreen version on one side, while the other has the movie reformatted for the TV screen. There are eleven minutes of deleted scenes on one side, and a twelve-minute making-of featurette on the other. There is also a relaxed commentary track from Freundlich and Duchovny but surprisingly not Moore.

same old same old cliche after cliche. bedroom scenes , restaurant dining scenes, marriage counseling/group therapy scenes, theater scenes, buying magazine scene, taking care of baby scenes, chasing car-toll scenes, i-love-you, i-love-you-not scenes, marriage & commitment phobia scenes, public declaration i-love-you, adultery+affairs scenes, without-you-i'm-not-complete scenes, wedding scene, all-the- audience-stay-nobody-left-all-applaud scene.....on and on, you name it. all of these deadbeat storyline, plot, dialogue, settings, scenario....have been played and replayed, scripted, directed again and again, either in new york or in l. a. million times. too formulaic and stereotyped old broadway + hollywood modes. please give us something a little bit new, okay?

Huge Kenshin Fan.......2007-01-28

I really enjoyed both of these movies; however, I would not recommend this to someone who has not followed the Rurouni Kenshin Series. If you have not seen the Rurouni Kenshin Series - primarily Arcs 1 & 2 - I would recommend holding off on purchasing this DVD set. If you watch these without watching the first two Arcs, you will most likely not enjoy the movies; and more importantly, in the case of Reflections, they will ruin the series for you.

Now I know a lot of people get confused about the order of the Series & OVAs, so I'd like to clarify the issue. As far as I know, this is how it goes (If I am wrong, feel free to correct me):

Arc 1 = Introduces the Main Characters
Arc 2 = The Shishio Story
Arc 3 = Consists of several "Mini Stories" (They seem like filler episodes)
Arc 4 = The Enishi Story (This Arc was never animated)

Trust and Betrayal is the Kenshin story that takes place before Arc 1 - This story really describes the events and tragedies that cause Kenshin to become the Kenshin we know from the series.

Reflections takes places after Arc 4 - This story is a recap of the Kenshin story (hints the name "Reflections") and ultimatley concludes the Kenshin story.

Theses DVDs are a lot more violent and serious when compared to the action/comedy series. The mood is completely different from the series. They are very "emotional" and really allow you to "feel" and "understand" the characters (Another reason why I recommend watching the series first). If you are a huge Kenshin fan like me who loved the series and always wondered what happened before and after the series, then I would highly recommend purchasing this DVD set.

Tragic, beautiful, captivating anime.......2006-08-07

I watched this first, then bought the TV series, which is quite enjoyable, and not quite as dark and depressing as this movie. However, the art work is just beautiful, and the voice acting is well done. The power of the Samurai code and of love itself is palpable in this film, and I will watch it many more times!

Words of Advice.......2006-08-04

Okay where to begin. First off for the two of you who don't know Samurai X are the oavs that are extensions to the manga Rurouni Kenshin. The reason it is not named that is because the animated version ofthe tale is published by a different company. Trust and Betrayal takes place during the main characters youth. Though the movie can be watched seperately it is best enjoyed after watching the first and second season of the anime series or the first 15 or so mangas volumes.

First off three warnings. One if your like happy light simple anime, look else where Samurai X trust and betral are anything but happy light and simple. Second though not essentual you should have some knowledge of the samurai code of honor, it helps a great deal when it come to motives behind the characters. And lastly and perhaps most importantly this film is not for children, this is not because there is anything objectably besides gore in the film, rather the stroy if so complex and subtle children simply won't understand what's going on.

Now on to the actual review. Samurai X Trust and Betral is simply put perfection incarnate and one of the few anime ever made that can stand beside legendary series like Neon Genesis Evangleion and the like and not be out of place. The story takes place during the beginnings of the Japanese revolution that began the Maji Restoration and fouces upon a assassin named Kenshin Himura. I won't go into details about the plot however as i said this story is a true tragedy. Think Romeo and Juilet except with samurai and tens times more tragic. The story is very VERY sad and this is resounded in every aspect of the film, from the color scheme to the voice acting and music. Also there are alot of things going on behind the story and are rather subtle side in presentation. However if you truly grasp the more subtle things of the story you will find it to be one of the best stories ever written peroid.

On to the art. What can I say really other then that I have seen well over two hundred anime series and I yet to see anything say for a few Myhozoki films that even come close to the animation and art work. Yes it is that good even though only pastel colors are used these furhter reinforce the sense of tragdy. By traditional anime values the character are almost ugly however if not expecting that they are beautifully drawn, especially the faces and eyes.

To the music, hummm there have been few sounds tracks that fit whats happening on the screen so perfectly. Though for the most part sad it is beautiful music and if you can buy the sound track.

Next is the voice acting. The japanese actors are great however for one of the few times the english actors are actually better and fit the characters perfectly and hit every mark. The only problem is the mispronouncing of the main female character's name, which is somewhat frustrating but easily forgiven.

The characters are well thought out and unlike any others in all animedom. By the end of the film I could honestly say that I felt like I knew each of them on a personal level which is rare.

Lastly Samurai X trust and betrayal is one of the best stories ever put to paper or to the screen. I recommend everyone watch this film once they come of age. Especially during the teens years when kids are starting to ask why war and murder are bad things. This film gives a clear and definite answer, if somewhat complex. Now then enough talk go buy now, you'll at the very least like this one if not completely love it.

Not so much a review but a warning ..........2006-06-22

I'd like potential buyers to know that this particular version - the 2003 release "Samurai X - Trust & Betrayal (Director's Cut)" is completely missing the music track.

Both voice tracks as well as the sound effect track are present, but the key ommision of the music track is nontrivial.

The beginning and the end.......2006-06-09

In this little boxset you have the rurouni kenshin trust/betrayal and reflections both in their directors cut edition.

Story:
The first movie Trust and Betrayal talks about the past of Kenshin Himura, as the famous hitori battousai "the manslayer".
This is 10 years before the events of the TV series Rurouni Kenshin.

Reflections:
This somehow is a recount of key moments of the tv series, and provides a conclution to the story.
This about 15 years after the end of the tv series, kenshin is wandering again, and the people that loves him are waiting for him to return.
Packing:
2 slim cases in one slim cardboard box, the artwork is beautiful and the box is the best in quality and least for the animes that i have checked so far.
Video:
Beutiful, just beutiful, both movies are in widescreen, the image is perfect, the first movie have a darker feel and the animation is dark to give it full effect.
the last movie is glorious, wonderful colors and animation.
some people complain because the orginal ovas from trust and betrayal where on fullscreen and were chopped to make it widescreen.

Audio:
English 5.1 and japanese 2.0 make your choice, both soud good, but the 5.1 track sounds the best.
only have english substitles.

Overall:
Even if you are not a fan of Rurouni Kenshin this set belongs to all anime fans collection

This movie was excellently done. Great characters for the parts and following well with Ms. Steel's book. I loved her books and the movie were great to beable to later see and enjoy visually.

For anyone who is an In Flames fan, this is a must own dvd. The sound is great and they play so many great songs. Its a must own.

Great DVD.......2006-12-30

Most old time fans of In Flames ditched the band after Reroute to Remain, which marked a different style for the band. I've heard it referred to as blasphemous, but that's a little harsh. That album was my introduction to IF, and after hearing just the first track, I went and bought the entire Friden catalog (didn't care for the last guy.) The Soundtrack came out, and I didn't really give it a chance. It was really different, really... strange. I just couldn't dig it, but The Quiet Place was great.
This DVD, while showcasing a lot of Soundtrack and the stupid song titles, is a gem amongst live performances. These guys hit these songs almost perfectly, aside from the tone differences on the older songs (from death growl to metalcore scream). But these songs are done amazingly live, with energy and care taken to reproduce the cd versions.
The bonus features are great too, but the Touch of Red video is the stupidest thing I have ever seen.

Ok, I understand that In Flames fan's taste vary on each album. Even though, I never REALLY got into Soundtrack, I still know how talented they are, and the songs aren't bad, but I like In Flames for their melodeath style material and the fusion before that album. I'm a big fan of everything up to Reroute, I skip Soundtrack due to personal taste, and then the newest album, Come Clarity? A breath of fresh air... Awesome... If u didn't give it a try because of Soundtrack, don't make that mistake! They did great on Come Clarity, it's beautifully brutal. But anyways, the point I'm getting to, is YES, they do the whole Soundtrack album on this, and NO, they did not forget about us die hards for the old material. The first concert is a big set list of songs from all albums, I about died when they covered f*'n hostile in memory of Dimebag, it was awesome. But the second concert has 2 sets, set 1 consists of the entire soundtrack album. Set 2? Is the pot of gold!!! It's a full set of the best songs from each older album, maybe 1-2 songs off of Reroute, but the rest is all the classics. I'm in love with this dvd. Not to mention the sound quality is amazing, the camera angles are great and their performance is stellar! I've seen them live the first time I heard them when they toured with Slayer and Soulfly like 5 years ago right when Reroute came out. They were my fav. ones there, they had energy, adrenaline, and atmosphere... And all that's on here too... Any In Flames fan should own this, fans of new material or old are getting their money's worth. The old songs sound SOOO good with the perfect sound quality. The version of moonshield on this dvd gives me chills everytime I listen to it. Don't pass this one up, BUY IT IN FLAMES FANS!!!

To start off I'd like to say that this is one of the best dvd's I've seen. It has everything you'd ask for.

The setlist is great, the one thing that was awesoem about the 3 setlists is the fact that in the second they play the whole Soundtrack To Your Escape album which is a big plus, It has their videos, behind the scenes footage, and a soundcheck section.

A great DVD in my opinion, wether your just getting into them or you've been a die-hard fan from the beginning any fan of metal would love this DVD. Not to mention, their live performances are great!

Amazing.......2006-03-16

This band is just so amazing I don't know where to start. I have all of their cds, and would like to clear up right now that, even though a lot of you have mixed feelings on theri "newer stuff", i think everything they touch is gold. This is never more aparent then on this DVD. The first live show start's off with one of my fav In Flames fares "Pinball Map" and crunches through some incredibly heavy stuff including a cover of Pantera's "F*cking Hostile" and continues before ending with "My Sweet Shadow" which is off the unpopular STYE album but sends shivers up my spine whenever I hear it. And that's just the first live performance. The second is broken up into 2 sets the first is STYE in its entirity live and the other is older fan favs...BUY THIS DVD IF YOU CALL YOURSELF AN IN FLAMES FAN. "I found a flame in burnt out ashes."
