REVENGE ON THE ROAD
This cult favorite from one of cinema's richest eras directed by Academy Award-winning director Joseph Strick stars Barry Bostwick (The Rocky Horror Picture Show) and Robert Drivas Cool Hand Luke) delivering bravura performances as a pair of brutish truck drivers who pick up a prostitute on a trip across America. Regina Baff (The Paper Chase) tears at the heart as the beaten and furious hooker who exchanges her body for a ride to Chicago, only to be further abused. Rejected and scorned, she becomes determined to seek revenge.

There's an extra coat of hot wax on Pixar's vibrant, NASCAR-influenced comedy about a world populated entirely by cars. Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) is the slick rookie taking the Piston Cup series by storm when the last race of the season (the film's high-octane opening) ends in a three-way tie. On the way to the tie-breaker race in California, Lightning loses his way off Route 66 in the Southwest desert and is taught to stop and smell the roses by the forgotten citizens of Radiator Springs. It's odd to have such a slim story from the whizzes of Pixar, and the film pales a bit from their other films (though can that be a fair comparison?). Nonetheless, Cars is another gleaming ride with Pixar founder John Lasseter, who's directing for the first time since Toy Story 2. There's the usual spectrum of excellent characters teamed with appropriate voice talent, loads of smooth humor for kids and parents alike, knockout visuals, and a colorful array of sidekicks, including a scene-stealing baby blue forklift named Guido. Lightning's plight is changed with the help of former big-city lawyer Sally Carrera (Pixar veteran Bonnie Hunt), the town's patriarch Doc Hudson (Paul Newman), and kooky tow truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy). The Incredibles was the first Pixar film to break the 100-minute barrier, but had enough story not to suffer; Cars, at 116 minutes (including some must-see end credit footage), is not as fortunate, plus it never pierces the heart. Trivia fans should have bonanza with the frame-by-frame DVD function; the movie is stuffed with in-jokes, some appearing only for an instant. Ages 5 and up. --Doug Thomas

disney / pixar makes great movies and this is one of them! great family movie with a great storyline. loved it

5 out of 5 stars An Instant Classic!.......2007-06-30

I would rate this along the lines of "Toy Story" as far as a child's ability to relate and enjoy the film, and for staying power.

My 3 year old son is addicted to this movie. The "speed" and "lightening" and even the classic music used in the film (Route 66 and the first song I heard right after getting my driver's license at 16 - Life is a Highway) make the perfect blend for a life-long HIT!

The actual story is original - tying racing with the story of Route 66. The characters are likable and entertaining for ALL ages!

Whether you are 3 or 103, I think you will enjoy the originality, comedy, music, action and even a little bit of romance! Two thumbs up and a must- have for all animation film collectors!

2 out of 5 stars In need of some repair .......2007-06-28

Pixar usually makes children's films that also appeal to adults on many levels, including jokes that fly well above the heads of youngsters. My son, who is three, loves to watch the first ten minutes of "Cars." Then he gets extremely bored and stops watching. Good films, such as "Finding Nemo," "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" and "Toy Story," will hold his attention for the duration. (He knows "Finding Nemo" from start to finish and has watched it, at minimum, fifty times.) I also enjoy good children's movies (I know most of the lines from "Finding Nemo"), yet I find this film tedious. At a runtime of nearly two hours, I cannot sit through the entire movie in one sitting and even then have a difficult time watching all of it. It starts out well enough and the ending, with its positive messages of friendship, loyalty and good sportsmanship, is quite good. Much of the material in between, however, is fairly weak. Scenes drag on far too long and are just plain dull. The messages could have been conveyed in fewer and more truncated scenes and still have been as effective. The basis for a very good film here is certainly evident. As usual, Pixar's animation is excellent and the tone is just right for kids: simple without being condescending and with very sparse scatological humor (which is an astonishing feat, given Larry the Cable Guy's involvement). The voice acting is well cast and features uniformly fine performances. With more judicious writing and editing, "Cars" could have been another Pixar classic. (2.5/5 stars)

Every medium has its own unique opportunities, with animation its the ability to express emotion that has universal appeal without all of the trappings that come with an actor of a specific gender, race, etc.

The cars in Cars are more human than human. This is a very touching movie and true quality family fare. Its a great movie to buy- we watch it over and over and over.

I watched this with two aging race drivers: one a local dirt track champion and the other a former NASCAR Winston Cup driver. We all loved this movie. Besides being a high quality animated presentation, my companions pointed out the accuracy and realism regarding the racing episodes and techniques that was evident to them. This movie will be a classic!

Pile together a blue-ribbon cast, a screenplay high in quirkiness, and the Sundance stamp of approval, and you've got yourself a crossover indie hit. That formula worked for Little Miss Sunshine, a frequently hilarious study of family dysfunction. Meet the Hoovers, an Albuquerque clan riddled with depression, hostility, and the tattered remnants of the American Dream; despite their flakiness, they manage to pile into a VW van for a weekend trek to L.A. in order to get moppet daughter Olive (Abigail Breslin) into the Little Miss Sunshine beauty pageant. Much of the pleasure of this journey comes from watching some skillful comic actors doing their thing: Greg Kinnear and Toni Collette as the parents (he's hoping to become a self-help authority), Alan Arkin as a grandfather all too willing to give uproariously inappropriate advice to a sullen teenage grandson (Paul Dano), and a subdued Steve Carell as a jilted gay professor on the verge of suicide. The film is a crowd-pleaser, and if anything is a little too eager to bend itself in the direction of quirk-loving Sundance audiences; it can feel forced. But the breezy momentum and the ingenious actors help push the material over any bumps in the road.-- Robert Horton

Description

Take a hilarious ride with the Hoovers, one of the most endearingly fractured families in comedy history.

Father Richard (Greg Kinnear) is desperately trying to sell his motivational success program...with no success. Meanwhile, "pro-honesty" mom Sheryl (Toni Collette) lends support to her eccentric family, including her depressed brother (Steve Carell), fresh out of the hospital after being jilted by his lover. Then there are the younger Hoovers?the seven-year-old, would-be beauty queen Olive (Abigail Breslin) and Dwayne (Paul Dano), a Nietzsche-reading teen who has taken a vow of silence. Topping off the family is the foul-mouthed grandfather (Alan Arkin), whose outrageous behavior recently got him evicted from his retirement home. When Olive is invited to compete in the "Little Miss Sunshine" pageant in far-off California, the family piles into their rusted-out VW bus to rally behind her?with riotously funny results.

4 out of 5 stars Great show!.......2007-07-03

Hilarious, from start to finish. You listen and stare at each other in amazement that they collectively grasped the concept of the whole family on a road trip persona. It was a great show and I loved the moral of the whole thing that family comes first, no matter what!

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT FILM.......2007-07-01

Little Miss Sunshine sounds like a cute, girly film but in fact it is an excellent film that touches so many topics. Little Olive (played by Oscar Nominee Abigail Breslin, brother of Spencer Breslin) tries out for the Little Miss Sunshine Pagent and must ride there in a car (which is like a character) with an array of interesting people. She is with her suicidal uncle, drug addicted dirty yet loving gradpa, her "I'm not talking till I get what I want" brother, her unsuccesful father who is annoying, and her loving mother who is trying her best to provide for the family. The film is fun, heartful and makes wou want more. The acting is amazing and the writing is spectacular. It deserved every Oscar it got and the Best Picture nomination. The writers masterfully switch from a depressing scene to the funniest part in the movie. AMAZING FILM

3 out of 5 stars Overtly Stereotypical on Models........2007-06-27

It was an alright movie; however, that ending was not what I expected it to be for a movie entitled "Little Miss Sunshine," because there was no "Sunshine" in the end.

4 out of 5 stars Just the right amount of sunshine.......2007-06-25

A very funny, occasionally moving and at times disturbing look at a typically dysfunctional family on a road trip to a beauty contest for pre-pubescent girls. The entire cast is great - Alan Arkin (who is hilarious) won the Oscar, but really any one of the six could have won. What I like about Little Miss Sunshine the most is that it's a feel-good movie that never feels corny or manipulative. The reason being that hovering around the sunshine the film casts are the dark clouds of depression, suicide, drug abuse and failure. The film could be just as easily depressing and dark as it could be sappy and sentimental, but the two polar opposites keep the other in check and create a fun, quirky atmosphere. The film isn't perfect - its comments on beauty pageants and America's obsession with winning seem a bit forced, contradictory and weigh down everything else. Despite its flaws, I dare you to watch Little Miss Sunshine without cracking a smile and feeling good. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Black Comedy Masterpiece.......2007-06-22

Cynical, sarcastic, biting, dark, this is hands down the funniest movie of 2006. Wonderful movie, great script, great actors, what's not to love? A very smart comedy, which will have you in stitches.

Now you're talking. I've been waiting so long for this that I'm (literally) just about to turn 46. I've had a copy of 6 taped episodes on "permanent loan" from the video store to tie me over(I'll now return it and pay the $11,000 fine). Remember that this series came out when the space race was on in ernest and so anything sci-fi or space related was all systems go on Saturday morning TV. Alex Toth was the artistic genius behind this and many of the other sci-fi related cartoons of the era (Herculoids, Jonny Quest...). The opening music is dynamite and it just gets better from there. You gotta love all the force rays, invisibility, fabulous planets... and it's just amazing how many evil insects exist in space.

There is some repetiton of the story lines between this and the other similar series but no matter - this is 60s cartoons in all it's glory. The younger viewers will love it but those who have grown up on TV cartoons of a more recent time may wonder what all the fuss is about - it's history boys so embrace it for what it is - land-mark TV. Buy 2 copies for when you wear out the first.

It's about time!! First Space Ghost then Birdman Hopefully these shows will be released soon, Shazzan,Mightor/Moby Dick,Fantastic Four (1967 Version),Frankenstein jr.& The Impossibles,Samson & Goliath The Herculoids
Adventures of Gulliver. 1967 was the best year for me on Sat Mornings because of these shows. I was 11.Then, one day the Bommerang channel happened to show all of these on a Sat Just like I was 11 Again.
So PLEASE PLEASE keep releasing these shows.

5 out of 5 stars Space Ghost and Dino Boy: The Complete Series..........2007-05-25

For those that don't remember, Hanna-Barbera ruled Saturday Mornings from
7:00 am (Atom Ant/Secret Squirrel/The Impossibles/Frankenstein Jr.) until
1:30 pm (Johnny Quest) in the 1966/1967 time range.

The most interesting point I wish to make is this:
All three major networks had Hanna-Barbera cartoons. Stranger still, I
don't remember ANY of them clashing with each other during the day!

In Los Angeles, one could flip from chs. 2 (KNXT - now KCBS/Columbia)to
4 (KNBC/National) to 7 (KABC/American) and catch about all of their
cartoons. (I seem to remember Birdman airing on Ch. 4 at the time)

Space Ghost - An Interplanetary Policeman who faced all kinds of
dangerous characters. What struck me as a child was the way he
would verbally joust with his foes - he had an odd sense of humor,
that one! Gary Owens was absolutely the best choice for the voice
of Space Ghost - The episodes where Space Ghost met up with the other
Hanna-Barbera characters (Herculoids/Shazzan/Mightor/Moby Dick?)
were the best - I didn't miss one episode!!

Dino Boy - Well, I liked the Cave Man (I think his name was Ug!),
I rated Dino Boy as "okay."

As much as I liked Space Ghost, it wasn't my favorite Hanna-Barbera
Animated show (that honor is reserved for The Herculoids (which
aired on CBS with Space Ghost) and Mighty Mightor (which aired on
NBC)), but that will not stop me from reserving my copy for $20/US.
It still garners a Five-Star rating!

5 out of 5 stars Space Ghost was the king of Saturday mornings!.......2007-05-18

1966 is widely regarded as the year that Saturday mornings became a ritual and an institution for cocoa puff-fueled kids, and Space Ghost was a big reason for that. The brainchild of comic book maven Alex Toth, SG spawned a host of imitators (Mightor, Young Samson, Birdman, Galaxy Trio, Herculoids, etc.) and for good reason; it was the number one-ranked saturday morning cartoon during the 1966-1967 season. It's not hard to understand why: Great character designs, colorfully bizarre villains, an outer space theme, cool music, the heroic voice of Gary Owens -- in a saturday morning landscape littered with lighter fare like Underdog, Porky Pig, Atom Ant, Casper the Friendly Ghost, the Flintstones and the Beatles cartoon -- kids ate it up. It was a more serious action-adventure show that catered to youths that couldn't get enough of the live-action escapades of Adam West and Burt Ward on the wildly popular Batman TV series.

What many people don't realize is that Space Ghost shared it's timeslot with another program called "Dino Boy in the Lost Valley," which was an entertaining program in its own right; kudos to Warner Brothers for including those segments in this set. A predecessor to Land of the Lost, Dino Boy features a young boy who is marooned in a prehistoric valley populated by dinosaurs and cavemen. Featuring plenty of tyrannasaurs and lushly painted backgrounds, it is a worthy addition to any cartoon fan's collection.

What Space Ghost and Dino Boy had that later saturday morning cartoons didn't was actual ACTION! In the late Sixties, partially in response to Space Ghost, parental groups lobbied to have violence of all kinds be removed from children's programming, resulting in bland, lackadaisical programming for the most part. That is why I am jazzed that Space Ghost and Dino Boy is finally being released on DVD! Couple that with the rumors that there is an extensive behind-the-scenes documentary about Toth on this set, and this is a must-buy!

This set contains all 20 episodes (18 season-one episodes and 2 season-two episodes):

Season 1
Each episode features two seven-minute Space Ghost segments with one seven-minute Dino Boy segment between them.

The two new episodes in this season consisted only of Space Ghost episodes that promoted other Hanna Barbera superheroes that debuted on CBS in 1967, including Mightor and Shazzan.

Product Description

In this exclusive 83 minute DVD premiere, featuring brand new, never before seen content, Stewie, the maniacal baby genius, is distracted from his plans for world domination when he sees a man who looks just like him on television. Convinced that this man must be his real father (after all, how could he possibly share genetic material with the dimwitted Peter?), Stewie sets off on a cross-country road trip to find him. But his incredible journey leads him to discoveries far more vile and shocking that anything found in his diaper.

For Family Guy fans, there are no freakin' sweeter words than "Never Before Seen." A triumphant homecoming for the Griffins, Stewie Griffin is not so much a movie as it is a not-yet-aired three-episode story arc enhanced with a home-video-exclusive "red carpet premiere" prologue and an epilogue (capped, of course, with a fart joke). Family Guy's resurrection is a television miracle, and its creators have rewarded the faithful by picking up right where they left off, offending any and all sensibilities (recasting Jesus as comic magician Art Metrano), dissing the celebrity disenfranchised (Ellen Cleghorne references, anyone?), and generally taking potshots at anyone on their enemies list (Stewie breaks the neck of a reporter for Entertainment Weekly, the magazine that once called Family Guy "the Awful Show They Just Keep Putting on the Air"). The Untold Story! is a star vehicle for Family Guy 's breakout character, in which the mega maniacal and matricidal infant has a Grinch-like change of heart after a near-death experience (and a disturbing encounter with Steve Allen in Hell) and, more life-altering, discovers a football-pated man who could be his father (the truth is more shocking!). As go the gags, so goes Family Guy, and there are enough good ones here to compensate for the many misfires. The Miller-esque (as in Dennis) penchant for channeling arcane pop culture can grow tiresome. But for those who do remember the words to the Who's the Boss theme song, know (or still care) who Steve Bartman is, and are always up for "a sexy party," this will be the greatest story ever untold. --Donald Liebenson

A great feature presentation of arguably the best comedy animation series ever made.

5 out of 5 stars The good, the bad and the hilarious .......2007-05-04

"Stewie Griffin - The Untold Story" is a big, colorful and tasty collection of everything we love about Family Guy (and I mean, certainly, open-mindness... and fart jokes). Don't miss nearly 90 minutes of insane Family Guy laughs, all combined in this work of genius. Join Stewie in his time-travel to the future, watch Cris grow even more fatter and Meg become a guy, and Stew himself - a 30 year old virgin.

3 out of 5 stars Yawn........2007-05-02

Honestly, I only bought this because I heard that a David Bowie character appeared in it. When I actually watched it, I was saddened to see that it was just a few Family Guy episodes (rather boring ones, to tell the truth) that I had already seen strung together. I wouldn't say it's worth 20 bucks, but if you feel the need to watch this and you're a big Family Guy fan, go ahead, if you must...

3 out of 5 stars Family Guy: The Movie Review .......2007-03-13

I saw separate pecies of this movie on TV and I must say that I am somewhat impressed. There are laughs and misses on this movie. I enjoyed most of the movie except the flashbacks and other off topic sequences. Some of them are funny at first and then get annoying. I wish I would have watched the movie on its DVD because I bet there were things on it that TV wouldn't show. So I guess if people are going to see this movie on TV I would read this review, but if you're going to rent it or buy it, I would rather read another one.

The beauty of the South American landscape and of Gael Garcia Bernal (Y Tu Mama Tambien, Bad Education) gives The Motorcycle Diaries a charisma that is decidedly apolitical. But this portrait of the young Che Guevara (later to become a militant revolutionary) is half buddy-movie, half social commentary--and while that may seem an unholy hybrid, under the guidance of Brazillian director Walter Salles (Central Station) the movie is quietly passionate. Guevara and his friend Alberto Granado (Rodrigo de la Serna, a lusty and engaging actor) set off from Buenos Aires, hoping to circumnavigate the continent on a leaky motorcycle. They end up travelling more by foot, hitchhiking, and raft, but their experience of the land and the people affects them profoundly. No movie could affect an audience the same way, but The Motorcycle Diaries gives a soulful glimpse of an awakening social conscience, and that's worth experiencing. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars beautiful movie.......2007-06-22

I thought this was an extrordinarily beautiful movie. The cinematography, music, acting, and pace are all superb. I'll leave out the Guevara/Castro rant, since this is not the appropriate forum, and it's not relevant to a review of this movie. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A love letter to a pre-Che.......2007-06-16

I've read both books that this DVD is based on, and the way they are put together makes an interesting film. If you haven't yet discovered the talents of Garcia Gael Bernal, you certainly will want to see more of his films after this. Beautifully photographed, will make you want to take a tour of Latin America yourself. Perfect casting all around. Truly gives you a better understanding of Ernesto "Che" Guevaro's motivation for who he was to become. The Widescreen edition is a must to appreciate the magnificent magical feeling that makes you want to get on the back of the motocycle with them.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-05-30

This movie is one of the best foreign flix i have ever seen. the way that they portrey Che is so interesting. finding out about one of the most memerable rebels in all of history. seeing his beginings in communism and the point of view of the native people in chile peru and all of south america. This movie is a great historical film as long as a great Drama

5 out of 5 stars Why do so many people get this film wrong..........2007-04-29

First of all, this is NOT a documentary, this is a film portraying the life of a 23 year old Ernesto Guevara de La Serna looking for adventures and inspiration. There was no need to give more details or be more specific about this character. He was a young man at this point, far from becoming the infamous warrior the world came to know as Che Guevara. I love this film, in fact it one of my favorites. I am appalled to learn about his actions in Cuba and his decision to stop practising medicine. I cannot deny that I both, admire and despise what he became, but the point of this movie is to depict his journey through South America, not how he became Che Guevara and end up with Fidel Castro in Cuba.

5 out of 5 stars Let the world change you and this film also........2007-04-11

One of Gael's insperational & professional roles as "che" hands down. A really really great movie of how the world chages a person and makes them wanna change the world he lives in.

The definitive surf movie, this 1966 documentary by Bruce Brown is beautifully shot and thrilling to see in its portrait of youthful freedom on the world's shores. Brown followed two surfers around the globe in their quest for the perfect wave, finding it eventually on a remote beach far from home. The narration by "Big Kahuna Brown" cuts through the reverence a bit, being cheeky in tone. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars You don't have to surf to like this movie.......2007-03-06

I'm not a surfer. In fact, I don't think I've ever toughed a surfboard.
But I do like the BEACH BOYS!! Anyway, the point is; you don't have to surf to enyjoy this film. I've always been interested in the sport but never got involved. Sort of an armchair surfer, I guess. This is a great film and very exciting to watch. Bruce Brown did an amazing job and the overall look of the film is great. Following the two young surfers around the world in search of the perfect wave is an interesting concept and was well executed. The scenery is great, the surfing scenes are great, and I really enjoyed this movie. So, if you are a surfer,or, like me, just a spectator, you will like ENDLESS SUMMER. I know, I'll put a TV in my bathroom, splash around in the tub and watch ENDLESS SUMMER II tonight.

5 out of 5 stars Return to sunnier days!.......2007-02-17

This movie plays just as well as when it came out. A cold, snowy New England winter faded from my mind as I was transported around the world and back in time to a simpler era. The photography is spectacular and the talent of the surfers is without question. What a great escape! I'll be watching it a lot this winter and for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars The Ageless Summer.......2007-02-01

It was a fantastic movie when it was first released and it is still just as good. Great photography, good narrative. Makes me long for the summer days I used to spend on the beach at Santa Cruz.

5 out of 5 stars Im Might Not Be A Surfer..........2007-01-17

I Might Not Be A Surfer But I Really Like This Movie. I Thought It Was Gona Be One Of The Worst Things I'll Ever Buy But I Really Gotta Say This Movie Is One Of My Top 10 Favorite Movies In General.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Miss This Classic!.......2006-11-05

I hadn't seen Endless Summer since it was first released in theaters...a long time ago. WOW...Did it bring me back. The music, the filming: top notch and captivating. A trip down Memory Lane when life was simpler and my madras shorts weren't old-school.

This box-office hit from 1969 is an important pioneer of the American independent cinema movement, and a generational touchstone to boot. Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper play hippie motorcyclists crossing the Southwest and encountering a crazy quilt of good and bad people. Jack Nicholson turns up in a significant role as an attorney who joins their quest for awhile and articulates society's problem with freedom as Fonda's and Hopper's characters embody it. Hopper directed, essentially bringing the no-frills filmmaking methods of legendary, drive-in movie producer Roger Corman (The Little Shop of Horrors) to a serious feature for the mainstream. The film can't help but look a bit dated now (a psychedelic sequence toward the end particularly doesn't hold up well), but it retains its original power, sense of daring, and epochal impact. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Easy Rider.......2007-06-27

This film represents myself, and my generation from the early 60's. I understand and identify with it it completely. Sometimes those timess become a little fuzzy in my memory, but a film like this brings it all back. It was actually made during that time also, with actors in it who truly felt their parts. Whenever I feel like like revisiting my 60's adventures, I watch this movie.

5 out of 5 stars You'll either love it, or hate it. .......2007-05-11

This film is wildly popular with a certain type of person, but it's just as easy to find "that" other type of person who can't stand Easy Rider and see nothing positive about it. After watching this film, you will no doubt have realized that there was two main kinds of characters in this story. One was the character that was open minded, tolerant, and accepting of the world. The other type of character was hateful, close-minded, violent, and very scared of character number one and all the things that those kind of characters represent.

First off, this is what today we would call an independent film. This movie was very renegade when it came out in the market. This particular DVD has a documentary called "Shaking the Cage" inside the extras sub menu. Great documentary, and the title says it all. Hopper and Fonda showed classic American balls by making this movie, and making it in the manner they did. Can you tell whose side I'm on yet?

The photography is amazing. All of the road shots in this movie are stunning to look at, and the locations throughout the film are real, gritty, and distinctive. I imagine that even if this film would have had a huge budget, it still would have appeared to be very raw. Hopper obviously wasn't making a fantasy movie here, he crafted a very real story and placed it in the real world. This is a film that is intended to get the audience thinking, get them asking questions, and yes, probably make you a little angry. The activism that was born and raised in the 60's is still there in Hopper and Fonda's creation. These two men have always been involved in what has been called the "counter-culture" movement, and I guess this film is what made them household names for doing so.

Awesome soundtrack as well, and how could there not be. I own the double CD of this film's soundtrack, and it's just beautiful music to listen to. Again, listening to it makes me think, and it makes me ask questions about my country and my world. In my opinion, anyone who considers themselves a truly free U.S. citizen should be a thinker, and should always have a little skeptic sitting on their shoulder asking questions about what is going on in the world around them.

I think this film will stand the test of time as not only an entertaining film, but a fairly accurate historical document that covers a very turbulent and important time in our nation's social history. If for no other reason than to take a glimpse into the late 60's to early 70's, this film is worth watching. You will no doubt find yourself clearly on one side of the fence or the other about Easy Rider, there is no fence sitting. If you like it, it's brilliant, but if you hate it, it's boring hippie garbage. It is what it is.

1 out of 5 stars the real 60s.......2007-01-06

This movie is offensive in the same way that any movie that is truly about hippies would have to be. What that meens is this movie does not consist of the typical slapstick hippie stereo type that we usually get in stupid cartoons. This shows hippies for what they are, degenerates, and at the same time it demonizes the south. For a hippie, this movie would seem to be a moral statement, but to me it just seems to show how awful people can be. Shame on hippies for being , lazy, pot smoking, anti-establishment degenerates. But shame on the south too, for being filled with such hatred. But while I'm sure there are some people in the south that would have no problem shooting hipppies on spot for no apparent reason other than that they looked funny, I can't help but feel that the south were exagerated to certain extent. In conclusion though, this movie was enjoyable . I don't know why, but it was. I guess its just a very amusing look into the late 60s (something thats usually sugarcoated)from the "other side" lol. i would like to rate it higher, but I just can't bring myself to do it.

P.S. That hippie commune was kind of sad. The adults were running around actin irresponsible while the kids were just generally unhappy without any real parent figures.

From the director of Dude, Where's My Car? comes another crazed tale of two friends on a perilous quest--in this case, to eat burgers at the fast food restaurant White Castle. The pair--repressed Harold (John Cho, Better Luck Tomorrow) and freewheeling Kumar (Kal Penn, Love Don't Cost a Thing)--get extremely high and set off on the road, only to be sidetracked by skateboarding hooligans, racist cops, an inbred tow truck driver, and Neil Patrick Harris--yes, Doogie Howser, M.D. The humor is all over the map, and it would be nice if there were one female character who wasn't a caricature, but Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle has a loose, gregarious charm, and the movie's canniness about the cliches of the buddy-movie genre give it a sneaky subversive feel--just the fact that neither of the heroes is white puts a different spin on just about every circumstance. Surprisingly clever, cheerfully stupid. --Bret Fetzer

1 out of 5 stars Asians on Drugs.......2007-06-15

Being an Asian immigrant who likes to occasionally eat at White Castle, I was interested in seeing this film. It turned out to be worse than I could have imagined. The movie is about drugs, drugs and more drugs and there is nothing funny about it. White Castle hamburgers make an appearance at the end but mostly it is drugs the Asian characters want. They smoke marijuana all the time which is not like any Asians I know. The white people in the movie are always calling Asians names but that is not like any white people I know either. In the real world, it is only the Black and Spanish that have called me names because I am Asian. I would only recommend this movie if you think it is funny to watch Asian people smoke marijuana.

2 out of 5 stars Reefers and Slyders.......2007-06-03

You've got to cut independent films like this some slack given they are produced on a low budget with relatively inexperienced actors and crew people. You've got to cut this film even more slack because it is a comedy: Even if some things seem pretty stupid, they are meant to be stupid. The problem with "Harold & Kumar," however, is that it is much more stupid than ever intended. You can cut it all the slack you want and it's still pretty bad.

The story is about an East-Indian (or is he Pakistani?) named Kumar and his Korean friend (or is he Chinese?) named Harold. Smoking dope supposedly gives you the munchies, so, one evening, after smoking lots of marijuana, they get a craving for White Castle's mini-hamburgers ("Slyders"). But finding a White Castle proves harder than expected. The movie is about their bizarre search for more marijuana and for a White Castle.

"Harold & Kumar" is kind of a cross between the worst of Cheech & Chong and that academy award winner for politically correct zombies, "Crash."

Every White person in the film, except for Harold and Kumar's Jewish neighbors, is a racist who shouts slurs at our Asian leads. Harold and Kumar have anti-Asian slurs hurled at them all day long from White people. (My wife is Chinese and she has never been subjected to a racial slur by a White person in the more than fifeen years that she's lived in the New York City area.) The non-Jewish Whites in the film are either criminals who terrorize minorities or thuggish police officers who arrest Black people just because they are Black. (Yeah, who ever heard of a Black criminal?) That the only nice White people in the flick are Jewish is kind of interesting given that the screenplay was written by two guys with the surnames "Schlossberg" and "Hurwitz."

This is one of those movies, like the "Fritz the Cat" cartoons, that you have to watch stoned to enjoy. I'd say that you'd have to be really, really stoned!

One thing that is effective about the film, however, is that the ending will give you a craving for White Castle. I've never been a big fan of those Slyders but, the day after watching this film, I went to the White Castle on Queens Boulevard in Elmhurst to get my fix of them.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie even for a gay guy!!!.......2007-05-29

I am a gay guy and I loved this movie for all of the "campyness" it had to offer. Two stoners set out on their "quest for munchies" to a White Castle. What I found very different about this movie is that neither of the lead characters are white. It was this little twist that made this movie an "over the top" funny. My favorite part of the movie is when their car broke down and this redneck stops to help them. You will have to watch the movie to totally understand it. I recommend this movie to anyone that wants a good laugh for the night!!!!

You don't have to be a munchie-loving stoner or an aspiring rock god to enjoy Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, but it helps. A dozen years after they introduced their mock-rock power duo on the Los Angeles club scene, Jack Black and Kyle Gass finally got the movie showcase (a partial spinoff from the D's short-lived HBO series) their fans had been waiting for, and it's a rockin' romp with plenty of crude laughs that will hit home for anyone who's ever played air guitar to Meat Loaf's "Bat out of Hell." It's a Beavis and Butt-head-like origin story, recalling the legend (ahem) of how JB (Black) and KG (Gass) met, bonded over bong-hits and rock-operatic guitar licks, then set out (on a tip from a crazed guitar-store clerk played by Ben Stiller) to find the mythic pick of destiny, used by all guitar gods and said to be fashioned from the tooth of Satan. Their quest includes a variety of well-cast cameos (including Tim Robbins, Meat Loaf, and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl as Satan himself), and there's plenty of flatulence, drug humor, at least one hilarious fantasy sequence, and outrageous sight gags too numerous to mention. Suffice it to say, it's about 90 minutes of lowbrow indulgence, and some of the jokes fall flat, but if you're a headbanger at heart, you'll know what Tenacious D is riffing on, and the sweet licks (also available on the soundtrack CD) will sound that much sweeter. If you're not ready to RAWK, this potential cult favorite may not be for you... but give it try anyway. It may not be better than Citizen Kane, but if you're properly stoked, it comes close to rock & roll heaven. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Please enter a title for your review.......2007-06-27

I'm surprised by how unique this movie is for a 2000s comedy. Like how they're not trying too hard to be funny like everyone else (coughWillFerrellcough) seems to, it's almost quaint, more like Cheech And Chong than anything from the last 10 years. The absence of the expected satire in the portrayal of the overzealous security guards in the rock museum was refeshing. I found myself saying "omg that is so weird" more often than laughing, and I'm not saying that's a bad thing. Even the nasty sexual references are presented weirdly out of context so you never see them coming. It's a cool movie. Much better than Idiocracy and most other comedies I've seen lately. I wish people would stop comparing it to Spinal Tap, it's nothing like it.

3 out of 5 stars crazy funny.........2007-06-19

If you are looking for a first rate comedy with witticisms in the league of 'philidelphia story' or even 'spinal tap' you have obviously come to the wrong place..
On the other hand if you are looking for a movie with moments so absurd that you cannot help but double over in laughter.. a sort of movie that could become a stoner cult classic - by all means procede ladies and gentleman..
Jack Black is one of those fat rednosed comedians of the chris farley ilk that can and will make you one of his admirers - the man is just plain funny..
and while tenacious d is not the perfect vehicle for his humor - it is a good one, without a doubt..

5 out of 5 stars CAN'T STOP WATCHING IT.......2007-05-29

Picked this up with 2 other movies (3 for $20 at Hollywood video) and am so glad I did. I keep it on constant rotation in my DVD player. Seen it about 12 times in a row now. It's great. Everything's pretty much awesome about it. Jack Black is so funny! This movies really brings me back to the mentality I had when I was 14. Love it!

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-28

This masterpiece is an underrated work of genius. Fans of the HBO series should love this. J.B. is so cool & K.G. is so raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad. ROCK ON

5 out of 5 stars Snort, Snert, Guffaw.......2007-05-16

I knew nothing whatsoever of Tenacious D before I watched this movie. And it did not matter. I laughed until I SCREAMED! The first 2 scenes and the rockoff with "Beelzeboss" are murder! I had to get up and jump up and down to get all the laughter out!
