Marvel Comics' first family of superherodom, the Fantastic Four, hits the big screen in a light-hearted and funny adventure. It begins when down-on-his-luck genius Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd, Horatio Hornblower) has to enlist the financial and intellectual help from former schoolmate and rival Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon, Nip/Tuck) in order to pursue outer-space research into human DNA. Also on the trip are Reed's best friend, Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis, The Shield); his former lover, Sue Storm (Jessica Alba, Dark Angel, Sin City), who's now Doom's employee and love interest; and her hotshot-pilot brother, Johnny Storm (Chris Evans, Cellular). Things don't go as planned, of course, and the quartet becomes blessed--or is it cursed?--with superhuman powers: flexibility, brute strength, invisibility and projecting force fields, and bursting into flame. Meanwhile, Doom himself is undergoing a transformation.
Among the many entries in the comic-book-movie frenzy, Fantastic Four is refreshing because it doesn't take itself too seriously. Characterization isn't too deep, and the action is a bit sparse until the final reel (like most "first" superhero movies, it has to go through the "how did we get these powers and what we will do with them" churn). But it's a good-looking cast, and original comic-book cocreator Stan Lee makes his most significant Marvel-movie cameo yet, in a speaking role as the FF's steadfast postal carrier, Willie Lumpkin. Newcomers to superhero movies might find the idea of a family with flexibility, strength, invisibility, and force fields a retread of The Incredibles, but Pixar's animated film was very much a tribute to the FF and other heroes of the last 40 years. The irony is that while Fantastic Four is an enjoyable B-grade movie, it's the tribute, The Incredibles, that turned out to be a film for the ages. --David Horiuchi! I>

If you were to argue that Mel Brooks's Young Frankenstein ranks among the top-ten funniest movies of all time, nobody could reasonably dispute the claim. Spoofing classic horror in the way that Brooks's previous film Blazing Saddles sent up classic Westerns, the movie is both a loving tribute and a raucous, irreverent parody of Universal's classic horror films Frankenstein (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935). Filming in glorious black and white, Brooks re-created the Frankenstein laboratory using the same equipment from the original Frankenstein (courtesy of designer Kenneth Strickfaden), and this loving attention to physical and stylistic detail creates a solid foundation for nonstop comedy. The story, of course, involves Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) and his effort to resume experiments in re-animation pioneered by his late father. (He's got some help, since dad left behind a book titled How I Did It.) Assisting him is the hapless hunchback Igor (Marty Feldman) and the buxom but none-too-bright maiden Inga (Teri Garr), and when Frankenstein succeeds in creating his monster (Peter Boyle), the stage is set for an outrageous revision of the Frankenstein legend. With comedy highlights too numerous to mention, Brooks guides his brilliant cast (also including Cloris Leachman, Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars, and Gene Hackman in a classic cameo role) through scene after scene of inspired hilarity. Indeed, Young Frankenstein is a charmed film, nothing less than a comedy classic, representing the finest work from everyone involved. Not one joke has lost its payoff, and none of the countless gags have lost their zany appeal. From a career that includes some of the best comedies ever made, this is the film for which Mel Brooks will be most fondly remembered. Befitting a classic, the Special Edition DVD includes audio commentary by Mel Brooks, a "making of" documentary, interviews with the cast, hilarious bloopers and outtakes, and the original theatrical trailers. No video library should be without a copy of Young Frankenstein. And just remember--that's Fronkensteen. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Mel Brooks' monstrously crazy tribute to Mary Shelley's classic pokes hilarious fun at just about every Frankenstein movie ever made. Summoned by a will to his late grandfather's castle in Transylvania, young Dr. Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) soon discovers the scientist's step-by-step manual explaining how to bring a corpse to life. Assisted by the hunchback Igor (Marty Feldman) and the curvaceous Ings (Teri Garr), he creates a monster (Peter Boyle) who only wants to be loved.

Amazon.com essential video
Ever since this convoluted thriller dazzled audiences and critics in 1995 and won an Oscar for Christopher McQuarrie's twisting screenplay, The Usual Suspects has continued to divide movie lovers into opposite camps. While a lot of people take great pleasure from the movie's now-famous central mystery (namely, "Who is Keyser Söze?"), others aren't so easily impressed by a movie that's too enamored of its own cleverness to make much sense. After all, what are we to make of a final scene that renders the entire movie obsolete? Half the fun of The Usual Suspects is the debate it provokes and the sheer pleasure of watching its dynamic cast in action, led (or should we say, misled) by Oscar winner Kevin Spacey as the club-footed con man who recounts the saga of enigmatic Hungarian mobster Keyser Söze. Spacey's in a band of thieves that includes Gabriel Byrne, Stephen Baldwin, Kevin Pollak, and Benicio Del Toro, all gathered in a plot to steal a large shipment of cocaine. The story is told in flashback as a twisted plot being described by Spacey's character to an investigating detective (Chazz Palmintieri), and The Usual Suspects is enjoyable for the way it keeps the viewer guessing right up to its surprise ending. Whether that ending will enhance or extinguish the pleasure is up to each viewer to decide. Even if it ultimately makes little or no sense at all, this is a funny and fiendish thriller, guaranteed to entertain even its vocal detractors. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
Very good movie.......2007-06-11
I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I got it used through [...]. Some comic turned movies, or cartoon turned movies are not that great. This is well worth the money. Plus, it has Jessica Alba in it!
Fantastic Four.......2007-05-14
A must for everyone who loves superhero movies, especially those based on Marvel Comics characters. This was the original "first family" of superheroes created by Stan Lee. They are brought to the screen by accurately lifting them from the pages of the ocmics with their diverse personalities and petty bickering. Whether you saw it at the theater or not, this is a DVD to own, especially with the sequel only a month away.
Very good movie........2007-05-13
Purchased this DVD because my grandchildren wanted to see it. Well worth the price.
AWESOME!.......2007-05-07
This movie is one of those that you can watch over and over again just because it's so good!! There's action, love, despair, comedy....all the qualities of an awesome movie! They did a very good job making it entertaining, while also keeping it clean so that kids could see it too. DEFINITELY A MUST SEE MOVIE!
Dr Doom, Mr. Fantastic, the thing, the human torch, and the invisible girl.......2007-04-17
Before the Incredibles there was the Fantastic Four.
Dr. Doom and the Green Goblin share many common characteristics:
1. Both were billionares 2. Both were put in financial ruin by the board and its bank members 3. Both became insatibly enticed by power, revenge, and hatred of the good guys. 4. Both possessed increased strength, put on a mask and kill.
The Thing and the Hulk share many common characteristics: 1. They both weight nearly a ton 2. They possess emmense strength 3. They have a handicap girl friend 4. They exhibit limited intelligence 5. and they are fear by the people. The Thing can smash a semi truck. The Hulk can smash a tank. The Thing can lift a fire truck. The hulk can jump for over a mile. The Thing can not return to human form, but the Hulk can once his rage deminishes.
Mr. Fanatastic and spiderman seem similar: 1. They are both scientist 2. They are ackward in love, but their girlfriends still love them even after severe disappointment. 3. They both fight evil with great heroism 4. They use a clever but intelligent trick to defeat their enemies. 5. Spidie invents things and Reed is an MIT genius inventor and owner of numerous patents. Spidie protects humanity and Mr. Fanatastic cosmic radiation experiment was designed to remove disease from humanity. Spidie loves and protects Mary Jane, Mr Fanatasic loves and is rescued by the Invisible girl.
Human Torch and Tom Cruise are look alikes. 1. They have famboyant and womanizing attitudes 2. They love celebrity life 3. They like to smile 4. They seem bigger than life 5. They protray a boyish charm on the big screen. 6. Its clobbering Time toy, motorcyle jumps, and snow boarding, hot tub on the mountain, characterize the Torch. 7. Seduces his nurse to join him on the mountain for skiing where she tells him "last one down pays for the room." Moral debauchery soften by humour and high risk adventure.
College girl innocence, seduction, and nudity: 1. Convinces Mr Fanastic to take charge and marry her: To act without thinking, to respond to attraction/beauty/pleasure and marry Sue. What gave Mr. Fanastic the courage to over come his disbelief in love? Mr. Fanastic learns that science does not alway lead to what he wants. Instead, Reed learns to believe in love and use science to help humanity. Reed learns too love Sue more than science. Dr. Doom's competition for Sue may have helped Reed too realize he valued Sue and wanted her. 2. Sue protrays herself as innocence, temperous, and a whitty school girl in style 3. Sue is often the voice of passion and the voice of reason and the voice of compassion for the team 4. Nudity: Two characters partially nude and the suggestion of full nudity: The torch burns off his cloths and walks around with a blanket around his midsection. The invisible girl strips herself of clothes, twice. I'm disappointed in the directors choice to put so much sexual inneundo into the movie.
Mr. Fanastic and Invisible girl, even their names suggested the struggle to see each other and build a relationship. Reed is married to his work, sterlized by his devotion to science; Reed finds any commitment to family or relationships a distraction from his work and withdraws; Sue tells Reed, "You never got it and you never will. Do I need to explain it through a quantum physic equation?"; Reed blames Sue for walking out; Sue blames Reed for the resulting fustration where she waited patiently for Reed too build his business; Reed fails at his business and fails with Sue's love never paying attention, time, or devotion, too her. Sue says about Victor, "It is nice to be recognized and have a man who know what he wants", too Reed. Reed believes he needs time to think out all the possiblilities. Reed believes he must focus on his survival; Reed is engrossed in his projects and a company on the verge of bankruptcy. Reed seems doomed to be a batchelor.
In the mean time, Victor has proposed to Sue, Victor wants to take Sue away from Reed, and Sue gives Reed a second chance. Victor and Reed start their faternal competition for Sue; Sue becomes the prize; Reed wins. Reed realizes he can have science and Sue at the same time, fantastic! Fame has given Reed recognition, self-actualization, and confidence to save the team by building a machine to reverse the cosmic ray affects. Reed is at the top and he wants more, so he pursues a relationship with Sue, transforming her from the invisible girl to his wife.
Teamwork:
The invisible girl by herself can not defeat Dr. Doom, who seeks revenge blaming Reed for the failure of his business and the lose of his fiance. Reed in his weaken condition can not defeat Dr. Doom and after being super heated melts down like warm cheese. The thing is put out of commission by Dr. Doom after returning to normal. The torch is momentarily delayed after the blast of a heat seeking missiles extinquishs his flame and puts him far out in the ocean. Dr. Doom fears the thing the most, probably a mental position of Ben being Reeds protector. The group discovers they must fight together to destroy Dr. Doom and save the world.
Mr. Fanastic wraps Doom up preventing him from shooting out electrical bolts of electricity, rubber is non conductive; the Thing pulls Mr. Fantasic free and gives invisible girl the opportunity to contain the human torch and Dr. Doom inside a force field bubble; the human torch ignites too 4,000 Kelvin, the temperature of the sun and goes super nova - super heating Dr. Doom ; the Thing aims water from a water hydrate at Dr. Doom and Doom soldifies, tempered and refined metal, too perfect and too strong for movement. High Four to the team.

Though it bears little resemblance to the original 1969 thriller starring Michael Caine, the 2003 remake of The Italian Job stands on its own as a caper comedy that's well above average. The title's a misnomer--this time it's actually a Los Angeles job--but the action's just as exciting as it propels a breezy tale of honor and dishonor among competing thieves. Inheriting Caine's role as ace heist-planner Charlie Croker, Mark Wahlberg plays straight-man to a well-cast team of accomplices, including Mos Def, Jason Statham, and scene-stealer Seth Green in a variation of the role originally played by Noel Coward. As the daughter of Croker's ill-fated mentor (Donald Sutherland), Charlize Theron is recruited to double-cross a double-crosser (Edward Norton in oily villain mode), and once again, speedily versatile Mini Coopers play a pivotal role in director F. Gary Gray's exhilarating car-chase climax. It's perhaps the greatest product placement in movie history, and just as fun the second time around. --Jeff Shannon

David O. Selznick wanted Gone with the Wind to be somehow more than a movie, a film that would broaden the very idea of what a film could be and do and look like. In many respects he got what he worked so hard to achieve in this 1939 epic (and all-time box-office champ in terms of tickets sold), and in some respects he fell far short of the goal. While the first half of this Civil War drama is taut and suspenseful and nostalgic, the second is ramshackle and arbitrary. But there's no question that the film is an enormous achievement in terms of its every resource--art direction, color, sound, cinematography--being pushed to new limits for the greater glory of telling an American story as fully as possible. Vivien Leigh is still magnificently narcissistic, Olivia de Havilland angelic and lovely, Leslie Howard reckless and aristocratic. As for Clark Gable: we're talking one of the most vital, masculine performances ever committed to film. --Tom Keogh

Stanley Kubrick's striking visual interpretation of Anthony Burgess's famous novel is a masterpiece. Malcolm McDowell delivers a clever, tongue-in-cheek performance as Alex, the leader of a quartet of droogs, a vicious group of young hoodlums who spend their nights stealing cars, fighting rival gangs, breaking into people's homes, and raping women. While other directors would simply exploit the violent elements of such a film without subtext, Kubrick maintains Burgess's dark, satirical social commentary. We watch Alex transform from a free-roaming miscreant into a convict used in a government experiment that attempts to reform criminals through an unorthodox new medical treatment. The catch, of course, is that this therapy may be nothing better than a quick cure-all for a society plagued by rampant crime. A Clockwork Orange works on many levels--visual, social, political, and sexual--and is one of the few films that hold up under repeated viewings. Kubrick not only presents colorfully arresting images, he also stylizes the film by utilizing classical music (and Wendy Carlos's electronic classical work) to underscore the violent scenes, which even today are disturbing in their display of sheer nihilism. Ironically, many fans of the film have missed that point, sadly being entertained by its brutality rather than being repulsed by it. --Bryan Reesman

The director/producer team that created Trainspotting turn their dynamic cinematic imaginations to the classic science fiction scenario of the last people on Earth. Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up from a coma to find London deserted--until he runs into a mob of crazed plague victims. He gradually finds other still-human survivors (including Naomie Harris), with whom he heads off across the abandoned countryside to find the source of a radio broadcast that promises salvation. 28 Days Later is basically an updated version of The Omega Man and other post-apocalyptic visions; but while the movie may lack originality, it makes up for it in vivid details and creepy paranoid atmosphere. 28 Days Later's portrait of how people behave in extreme circumstances--written by novelist Alex Garland (The Beach)--will haunt you afterward. Also featuring Brendan Gleeson (The General, Gangs of New York) and Christopher Eccleston (Shallow Grave, The Others). --Bret Fetzer
Description
Hailed as the most frightening film since The Exorcist, acclaimed Director Danny Boyle's visionary take on zombie horror "isn't just scary
it's absolutely terrifying" (Access Hollywood).

in a vacant hospital
in a deserted city. A powerful virus, which locks victims into a permanent state of murderous rage, has transformed the world around him into a seemingly desolate wasteland. Now a handful of survivors must fight to stay alive, unaware that the worst is yet to come

Stuart Gordon's adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's Herbert West: Re-Animator puts a Night of the Living Dead spin on the classic Frankenstein story. Jeffrey Combs furrows his brow and bugs his eyes as the preternaturally intense Herbert West, a maverick medical student whose gory, gooey experiments cause bloody corpses and body parts to jerk to life. Bruce Abbot is the studious roommate drawn into his extracurricular experiments, which soon involve the dean's daughter (the frequently naked Barbara Crampton) and the college's cadaverous, calculating star professor (David Gale), who literally loses his head over a battle for West's discovery. In this world, that's only a minor setback. Charged with sick gallows humor and a ghoulish gallery of undead beasties, Re-Animator, like Evil Dead II, is one of the most inspired and inventive--and funniest--horror films of the 1980s. Combs, Abbot, and Gale reunite for the almost-as-entertaining sequel Bride of Re-Animator. --Sean Axmaker
