Description
ARMISTEAD MAUPIN'S FURTHER TALES OF THE CITY is the third installment of Maupin's classic saga of San Francisco life. Set in 1981, the four-hour miniseries involves the residents of 28 Barbary Lane in a racy and rollicking adventure/mystery that leaps from Golden Gate Park to the home of a Hollywood icon to a remote island in the Alaskan wilderness. As usual in Maupin's world, romantic entanglements abound. Landlady Anna Madrigal (OLYMPIA DUKAKIS) is stunned by her mother's sudden arrival. Mother Mucca (JACKIE BURROUGHS) who runs a bordello in Nevada is in town to take care of personal business and meets a man from her past, Royal Reichenbach (JOHN MCMARTIN). When Mother Mucca introduces Anna to Royal, they find themselves in a rivalry over him. Madrigal's tenants have their own stories from the past to unravel. Michael Tolliver (PAUL HOPKINS) is working at a nursery called "Best Laid Plants." He tries to get over being dumped by his former lover Dr. Jon Fielding (BILLY CAMPBELL) who went off to work on a cruise ship.
Exploring his sexuality full tilt, Michael embarks on a series of sexual escapades involving cowboys, cops and Cage Tyler (JOHN ROBINSON) a closeted movie star. Michael's friend and neighbor Mary Ann Singleton (LAURA LINNEY) is challenged with a relationship problem of a different kind. Her boyfriend and upstairs neighbor, Brian Hawkins (WHIP HUBLEY) who has spent most of his adult life as a womanizer, comes to the realization that he wants to marry her. She, however, is hesitant to take the next step as she is focused on her career. Longing to become a serious reporter, but not given a chance by her station manager, she is forced to work as a daytime host of the "Bargain Matinee" show. Mary Ann's late boss' widow, socialite Frannie Halcyon (DIANA LEBLANC) is tormented by her daughter DeDe's (BARBARA GARRICK) apparent demise in the Jonestown Massacre. Living on Mai Tais and sleeping pills, she refuses to accept that DeDe and her children, Little Anna and Edgar were killed. She seeks advice from psychics to help her find her missing daughter. When a fortune-teller convinces her that DeDe is indeed alive, she asks for the support of society columnist Prue Giroux (MARY KAY PLACE) to make her story public. When Prue refuses to get involved, Frannie calls Mary Ann to share her secret. Since Mary Ann is always searching for a good story, she is eager to meet in hopes of finally getting a break on the evening news.
Meanwhile, Prue meets a mysterious homeless man, Luke (HENRY CZERNY) in Golden Gate Park. Immediately drawn to his intense charm, she falls madly in love with him. Little does she know that she's opening Pandora's Box when she attempts to bring him back to society with the help of flamboyant celebrity priest Father Paddy Star (BRUCE MCCULLOCH). Luke's past is far more sinister than Prue could ever imagine. Then it's revealed that DeDe Halcyon Day has spent three years in Cuba with her lover Dorothea (FRANÇOISE ROBERTSON) after escaping the massacre in Guyana. She ends up in a camp for gay Cuban refugees in Fort Chafee, Arkansas and finally calls her mother Frannie in San Francisco to tell her that she wants to come home. Through DeDe's unexpected reappearance and a twist of fate, the storylines begin to intertwine and all of the characters in Maupin's tales find themselves in the midst of an unpredictable adventure.

Great DVD, but incorrect version sent.......2007-07-05
Now, I love the Tales of the City series of books, and the DVDs are almost better. Further Tales of the City volume 2 is much darker than the previous episodes -- with more sexuality and less character. But still it was great to see another episode.
What spoiled it, though, was the DVD I got was completely without any booklet. There had been one in previous episodes, so that was disappointing. But the worst thing was that the default subtitles were French and were on by default. So you had to actually switch them off. And also, not that it matters much, but there seems to be no English subtitles -- at least not when I checked.
Was despatched from Germany rather than the US, so that could be why. But hey, I ordered it from the US so why isn't it a US English version? Very strange.
However, it was great to see more Tales of the City. I only wish the other books were made into TV series too. Please, Armistead? :)
Further Tales of the City, 2 Disc set.......2007-05-24
I just love this series! Since it had to end sometime, this had a good ending.
The Third Installment.......2007-04-15
"Further Tales of the City"
The Third Installment
Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride
Here we go again. "Further Tales of the City" is the third mini series based on the books of Armistad Maupin. It s a bit shorter than the two prior series but doesn't mean it is not as good. None will be as the first but the third is wonderful on its own. It has a great storyline and it is lots of fun. There is a lot of mystery and a lot of romance (and more frontal male nudity). Maupin was one of the first authors to integrate gay and straight characters into a novel and then we watched them mature and grow throughout six books. If you have lived in the real world, you know that Maupin has recreated the story of our lives and has done so beautifully. He writes about normal, everyday people who become our extended family and the mini series do for us on the screen what Maupin did on the printed page.
This series strays a bit from the books but the added storyline--that of Mother Mucca is great. I knew I did not have to worry about being disappointed in the screen adaptations of Maupin's books from the moment I started watching. Every nuance of every character is caught.
"Further Tales" begins some four years later than "More Tales of the City". The "ME" decade of the 80's is beginning and this is obvious throughout.
Maupin has stated that the main influence upon him when he writes is Alfred Hitchcock and as you watch the series you will see that. The stories and the characters overlap one another and the participants do not seem to notice this at all, Like Hitchcock, Maupin appears in a cameo.
Mary Ann has begun to notice love in her neighborhood. He has also landed a very hot news story and is waiting to spring it on her boss. As she and DeDe Halcyon-Day go through some great twists and turns, there is a wonderful comedy of errors. But have no fear. Anna Madrigal and Michael have their own subplots and their own twists and turns but it is Mary Ann that has the spotlight this time.
I have heard complaints that the ending is too happy. I think those that feel that way have forgotten just how many stories and subplots we have and how long all of this has been going on. The series is meant to entertain and we have all kids of entertainment here--a chase to Alaska, a kidnapping, a born again Christian wielding a gun and blowing someone away.
The third installment is darker than the others but that makes it even more fun. We must also remember that the 80's marked the beginning of the AIDS epidemic and one of the characters has signs that he has the disease. There is also the Jim Jones storyline which gives the conspiracy theorists something to consider.
Laura Linney as Mary Ann knows her character and is great Dukakis is always wonderful. The new storyline, as far-fetched as it is, works and the entire series is a wonderful look at the way we live. I can't say enough good things about the entire series.
The newspaper, the books and the TV show.......2007-03-08
When you think that Tales of the City led to national outrage in the US when it first aired on PBS in 1994, you almost don't believe it. Much has changed since then and part of that change must be credited to Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City; indeed, it paved the way for Ellen, for Will & Grace, for Queer as Folk, the L Word, Six Feet Under... you name it.
When you read the books, you become a prisoner of Armistead's wit and you can't stop reading. The short chapter structure, inherited from its daily serial early life in the San Francisco Chronicle, makes these books the perfect companion for short underground (subway) or bus journeys. The only problem is that as soon as you're done reading one chapter, you simply want to read further. With the exception of a few "one night stands", characters in the Tales are recurrent and they come and go into the lives of the main characters in such way that the only omnipresent and omniscient person is the reader. This helplessness of the characters and the inevitability of what you suspect is going to happen keeps you reading.
The TV series shares these exact same characteristics except that each episode (lasting for about 1,5 h) keeps you seated in front of your screen while you follow the lives of those living at 28 Barbary Lane.
Forget your prejudices. The Tales are actually about sharing your life with others and being good. It's about friendship and being open to it in the most unlikely places.
Further Tales of the City is the 3rd DVD of this most watchable TV series.
Still a fun "tale" to watch........2007-02-22
I hadn't watched this miniseries since its debut on Showtime back in 2001; I'm happy to say it's just as engaging as ever. While more condensed than its previous two miniseries, it still grabs you & sucks you into the "City" of yesterday, the early 80's, more than ever. It's also the mark of a good author such as Armistead Maupin and the skill of the actors who bring these quirky & diverse but "extended family" of characters who populate 28 Barbary Lane, to wonderful life.
The first two miniseries were good, full of surprising twists & turns, suspense, and frank sexual freedom, and "Further.." is no exception. Here's hoping for number 4!

Great Purchase.......2007-03-08
I got a good deal and a fast delivery. I would buy from person again.
Needs to be continued!.......2006-12-22
Great plot, pretty good cinemotgraphy, and no matter what age you are, you'll be rolling on the floor laughing. This film will probably be a hit with those under 21, but as I said before the anyone will enjoy the humor.
this move is so amazin'.......2006-08-29
god, this movie rocks! almost the whole movie makes me laugh and christina milian is smokin' hott throughout the entire movie. she was so hot during the beach scene i thought i was gonna lose it! the part where he sprays the binaca in his eyes was halarious! go see or buy this movie cause i love it and the ending has some hott lip action. i just wish i was the guy [alvin] so i could make out with her and hang with her for 2 weeks. too bad i don't have $1500 bucks! anyway, i LOVE this movie and it's cute, insparational, and halariously funny.
A Nice Surprise.......2006-08-28
I was set against watching this movie for it looked generic and stupid, but it was a lazy day Saturday and it was on TV so I gave it a shot and much to my enjoyment it wasn't half bad. I've always felt Nick Cannon was funny, but it was Christina Milian who really impressed me. She's a very talented young girl, with her acting as well as her singing, and she brings the best of both here in this film. I will say though that I am not a fan of Steve Harvey and I don't really think he'll ever do something I enjoy...his character to me was nothing special and would have preferred he be played by anyone else, but alas, he didn't take away anything from the film so he was tolerable.
The film itself is a remake of the '87 comedy `Can't Buy Me Love', which I've never seen but probably will rent just for kicks. It's a story about Alvin (Cannon) who's the super smart nerd in school who wishes that just once he could experience popularity. When Paris (Milian), one of the most popular girls in school, damages her mother's car and needs help in a hurry Alvin is there is offer his assistance in exchange for a chance to be cool. Paris agrees to fake a two-week relationship with Alvin in order to get him in with her crowd and then they'll split up publicly and continue with their newfound lives.
Over the course of the film the predictable plot thickens, for we all know that Alvin and Paris will fall in love and end up together, but how this happens of course will have it's twists and turns and they will try and make us believe they won't get together but we all know how it will end. That said, it's still a fun ride, with great chemistry between the two leads, Cannon showing great comedic range and Milian giving us warmth in what could have been a very generic role. Bottom line is, while it's nothing new, it's still a fun way to spend an afternoon.

Description
The award-winning actor and dancer Gregory Hines stars in this look at the life of extraordinary tap dancing legend Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. This is the story of an incredibly talented man who struggled with the demons of his past and the racism of his time, but still entertained millions with his unique and complex dance style.
Customer Reviews:
Bojangles vs. Tap.......2006-12-12
If you didn't like Bojangles...get TAP. It's GREAT, and it just came out on DVD.
Check out Savion Glover dancing in HAPPY FEET the movie. You see where he also added some of Gregory Hines steps in some cuts.
Should have been fantastic... Something went horribly wrong!.......2006-03-22
I bought this movie simply because it stars Gregory Hines and themes tap dancing. That should be a recipe for success, Gregory Hines and Savion Glover, two of the greatest tap dancers to have lived, in a movie about tap dancing. Unfortunately if that is also what you are thinking, you will be sorely dissapointed.
I watched this with my dance partner who has been tap dancing for over 19 years, even with my limited knowledge of tap I could tell that Gregory Hines was either screwed over by the choreographer, or what is sadly more likely, already suffering from cancer. He never in the entire movie came even close to tapping at his own skill level, which just made him and Bojangles look bad. The only top-notch tapping in the whole movie was a short 1 or 2 minute scene where Savion Glover busts out, which made the movie worth its purchase price for me. I've seen Bojangles routines danced by other contemporary dancers who aren't even great tappers, and they looked far better doing them than anything Hines did in this movie. It's really a shame.
Now that covers the tap dancing. As for the actual movie, I could have cared less had the dancing been good, but it wasn't, and the screenplay was even worse. First off, never... and I mean NEVER have your characters turn around, stare into the camera, and start telling the audience what is going on, or what their character is thinking. Not only is it incredibly annoying to the viewer, but the whole point of hiring actors is so they can act out a story without having someone sit there and TELL us the story. Talk about ruining the mood! There I am, getting into a scene, and all of a sudden a character turns around and starts telling me how in hindsight they weren't really making the best decision with their life at that time?! WTF!!? Is the cameraman -interviewing- the character?! What's going on?! I'm trying to -watch- the movie, this is like when your friends start kibitzing to you in the middle of a movie, it drives me nuts! Moving on from that little annoyance, it really doesnt get much better, the story is weak, something about gambling and his 2nd wife... I watched it like 2 hours ago and I'm already having trouble remembering what happened... The directing was atrocious, I love Gregory Hines, for his dancing and acting, and although he was still a good actor, he didn't give nearly the performance that he gives in other movies, BAD directing.
Anyhow, I could go on, but that would just be mean. If you worship tap dancing, get the movie for the 1 minute scene of Savion Glover busting out some SWEET moves. If not, I'd steer clear of this movie, you'd be better of watching a documentary with a bunch of interviews... It'd be a lot mor entertaining.
A Gift.......2006-02-23
My older brother danced with the nicolas brothers before they passed away and he teaches tap dancing. thought i send it as a birthday present.
Call that man Bojangles.......2005-10-25
This movie was awsome. THe coolest flick since titanic. I highly recommed it. Go Bo!
Bad Casting.......2005-06-25
Upon researching the true story of Mr. Bojangles, I thought his movie did not do him justice. First I will begin with the disappointment I felt with the casting. As most of people who took a chance to watch this televised biography, we are aware of what Bojangles looked like. No offense to Gregory Hines, but his casting was horrible. No similarities what so ever, besides the fact that he taps. I believe this movie would have meant more to me had the actor been a no-name. You can't get passed the fact that you're looking at GREGORY HINES. Another issue I have is that, this is nothing short of a recall of Bojangles courtship with his wife Fannie, who he dogged out. The movie spent way too much time on this subject and didn't give us the "MEAT" of this man's life, like his fall out with Stepin' Fetchit, or where he & black hollywood were confined to while recreation was segregated, the western version of Harlem, Central Avenue in Los Angeles ! The place that was hot in the 30's & 40's. The street that had a hotel where Bo always stayed when he came to LA, the Dunbar, where he fraternized with other black stars of his era. The club that they named after him. None of this priceless info was mentioned or recreated. This movie was a waste of my time. 2 hours of nothin'. Fannie's charector was a bad casting move too. She was light complected in real life and a sharp hollywood wife that was involved in a WHOLE lot more than messin' around with ice-cream. Then the movie speeds up once Bo & Fannie actually GET married and by the time you think you're gonna actually see some GOOD STUFF, he's dead and the movie's over. I sold my copy of this movie. It wasn't on the same level of other old biographies of other famous black stars. If you're trully interested in learning more about this legend, please take the time to READ about it first and not just rent or buy this movie believing it as Gospel to Bojangles life. The books tell you more. One in particular is The Experience of Black Hollywood written by Donald Bogle. Very enlightening. Don't waste your time on garbage like this movie. I wish I hadn't.

Entertaining History.......2007-05-30
This is not a great movie for movie making purists. For those who like baseball history, it is a fine film that tells the story of Jackie Robinson. Jackie Robinson plays himself while being surrounded by familiar backlot faces and playing opposite Ruby Dee. There is a lot for people to remember in this film. Some may be offended by the racial slurs even though markedly toned down.

Cliff Descloux.......2007-06-29
The Cross and the Switchblade has been one of those titles that has stuck in my mind since hearing about it,then viewing it in the early seventies.I grew up in a no-gang town in Alaska,so the movie got my interest on that point. However, the reason I remember the story is because of the portrayal of the power of God.This theme is also in the story of Gladys Ayward, missionary to China in the 1930's.That movie is 'The Inn of the Sixth Happiness'.As with The Cross and the Switchblade, the book provides a deeper story.(search under her name for the biography)
I gave five stars simply because it has remained in my mind for so long.I am buying the Cross and the Switchblade for my family.
What a God we have.......2007-06-24
I saw this movie yearssssssssss ago back in the 70's and then read the book and was touched deeply now that I have a putter and can order it I am and want all my family to watch God Bless all
Retro but timeless, and moving.......2007-01-12
I remember hearing about this movie decades ago and never saw it. Having finally seen it this past year I can see that I missed out on an incredible story of rescue and redemption from the world of drugs and gangs which unfortunately has an even stronger grip on our cities today. That is exactly what makes this film so relevant! How wonderful that it is dubbed in various languages! Another copy I own is already "making the rounds" amongst my German speaking friends in Munich. What happened in the 60's in New York still speaks to us today and crosses borders!
Bad Music & Acting Kill This Movie.......2006-09-15
The story of Nicky Cruz is indeed a powerful one & certainly relevant today. Unfortunately, this movie is so outdated that few high school or college students would be able to sit & watch it without laughing outright.
The music is horrible (read HORRIBLE). I'm not even convinced that most of secular society would have appreciated it back when this film was made, though I could be wrong on that point. It all seemed to fit so poorly with the movie's premise, & instead of helping the mood of scenes, it actually took much away from what might have been still impactful today.
Most of the fight scenes were poorly choreographed & some were reminiscent of "West Side Story". I half-expected the gangs to break into a song & dance number at any given moment. Along with that, though I understand the director was attempting to avoid a violent bloodbath on film, this movie could not possibly have accurately depicted ganglife. Most teens & young adults see worse in their own schools. To be fair, I was impressed with Pat Boone's ability to portray a non-judgemental Christian, though there were a few times when the camera angles portrayed him as almost angelic. (David Wilkerson is certainly someone to respect, but let's be realistic.) I am not a fan of Boone, but he handled his role decently enough. It was also pretty neat to see Erik Estrada when he was so young.
I'm sorry to say that I regret having purchased this movie. Not b/c the story is bad or even due to a poor script, but simply b/c it is not something I could ever share with the students in my youth group & their friends who would benefit from Cruz's story. Due to my husband's & my own struggle to see beyond the poor quality & dated nature of this film, I have little faith that our students would be able to get much from it.
This movie has impacted many, I realize. The story of Nicky Cruz is important, & people today should be exposed to it. Unfortunately, this film won't cut it in secular society today or even in many Christian ones. I hope that one of these days someone will remake this movie in a more realistic way with modern technology, pertinent music, & improved acting. Until then, I'll be referring them to the book & to Cruz's book "Run, Baby, Run".
The Book helped me change for the better.......2006-03-10
In 1975 I was given a copy of the book, The Cross and the Switchblade while i was waiting for a Greyhound Bus to go see my dad's mom whom I had never met. I was 14 years old and found myself put on the street by my natural mother who told me never come home. If it had not been for the spark this book put in my life and the seed that this book planted helped me prepare for my early adult life taking care of myself. I could not depend or trust anyone who said they loved me because I just didn't trust them, my own mother who said she loved me cast me to wolves, what would others do to me. It was David Wilkerson's book that changed me not immediately but planted the seed for the harvest in my life. I am now a Minister of the Gospel with a good business and a family whom I love and kids I wouldn't trade for anything.
