Much was written about Will Ferrell's first "dramatic role" as Harold Crick, an IRS auditor who begins hearing a voice narrating his life. But Stranger Than Fiction is hardly a drama. However, what Ferrell does--like Jim Carrey before him in The Truman Show--is handle a toned-down character with genuineness and affection: you believe he is this guy. Crick leads a lonely life filled with numbers and routines. While at first he considers the voice a nuisance, Crick decides more action is needed when it speaks of "his demise." Enter Professor Jules Hilbert (Dustin Hoffman), who takes on the absurd notion with revelry, trying to find out what kind of book Crick's life is leading. It turns out that the voice Crick is hearing belongs to Kay Eiffel (Emma Thompson), a very real--and troubled--author who is writing a book in which Crick is a fictional character. As usual with these things, the stuffed shirt learns to live a better life--Crick even falls for one of his audits, a brash baker named Ana (Maggie Gyllenhaal). Marc Foster (Monster's Ball, Finding Neverland) has the right tone for the film, using great urban scenes (the unnamed city is Chicago) with interesting visualizations of Crick's world of numbers. He also directs Ferrell, Hoffman, and Gyllenhaal to their most charming performances (plus Linda Hunt and Tom Hulce pop up in two funny scenes). Ferrell succeeds in being a romantic lead you can root for; a scene where he eats Ana's freshly baked cookies is totally delightful without a hint of sarcasm. Screenwriter Zach Helm has two personal traits with his story: like Crick he followed his heart (he stopped rewriting scripts and only worked on his own) and like Eiffel, the final results are not a masterpiece, but good, and entertaining enough. Britt Daniel of the band Spoon worked on the dynamite soundtrack.--Doug Thomas

Customer Reviews:
A Good Try.......2007-07-06
You have to love a movie that starts with a
fabulous premise. In this case, the life of
hyperbollically drawn tax auditor is mysteriously
linked with the fate of a character in a
stutteringly produced work of fiction. So far, so good.
We bop back and forth between the accountant
(and his predictable love story) and the tortured,
blocked author. The resolution is not particularly
courageous, but not many movie resolutions are.
(the accountant doesn't die because the character doesn't).
What's daring and admirable is the premise and the
splendid graphics. This is one of the most visually
interesting films to trot through the cineplex in
a long time.
There are also two splendid performances. Emma
Thompson as the author and Dustin Hoffman as the
professor of literature who helps unravel the mystery
are as good as their roles would allow them to be. no,
make that better.
The other actors-Will Farrell, Queen Latifah and
the delicious Maggie Gyllenhaal- seem sadly out of
place and call attention to the fact that they're
merely reading lines.
This quirky plot would have been a lot more satisfying
if the performances behind it had been more convincing.
Truly delightful.......2007-07-03
I fell in love with this movie from almost the first moment and continued to enjoy every minute to the end. I found it to be wonderful, heartfelt and genuine, with superb acting from every member of the cast. This movie is for viewers who appreciate quirky, understated, charming and very funny.
could have been cool.......2007-07-03
i think if this was done by another director it would have been much better. great idea but the execution was only so so.
Great Cast-Good Movie.......2007-06-30
Stranger Than Fiction brings to the screen the unusual story of a very "usual" kind of guy. An IRS agent living a rather uninteresting life for the last 12 years begins hearing a woman's voice narrating his life. It turns out he might be right...
The plot has elements of both comedy and drama making it rather difficult to label it as one or the other; it's actually a bit of both.
Will Ferrell, Maggie Gyllenhaal (who is GORGEOUS!), Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman, and the rest of this AMAZING cast, carry out their respective roles very well.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, and the music are all good.
In a nutshell, though not a masterpiece it will surely provide for an evening's entertainment.
Great Performances.......2007-06-29
First, I'll list what I like about the movie. The casting, the performances and most of the dialogs were very good. I can't think of a bad performance. The dialogs were quirky and thoughtful. Lines within their context are very good indeed. I like "So I decided to save the world one cookie at a time." Within its context, it is a fairly profound line. Ferrell is very good in this. Emma Thompson is awesome.
Second, I'll list what I dislike about the movie. The premise doesn't quite work. Does the Ferrel character hear the voice of the narrator within the novel itself. If he doesn't, I can't see how the author could explain his decisions about changing his life. If he does hear her voice within the novel, the ending does not make any sense. The author changed the ending because the character knew he was going to die in the novel and told her to finish it anyway. You get into the bootstrap problem because the author should have known because she's writing the character. Maybe I missed something? However, my main point is, the story drags because you think you know the character is going to die for most of the story. The plot just plods along setting everything up for the climax. The quaint characters and the spiffy dialog don't quite make for great movie.
I would give it 3 1/2 stars because of the performances.

All the cartoon are excellents but hard-to-find (only in old VHS or VCD) but ALL the fanatics of Looney Tunes want this compilation in DVD!!!!!!!!!
I think this is a Good idea...
That's all Folks!
Well........2005-08-07
Would it kill you guys who have the DVD to list the episodes on there?
Well done!.......2005-06-30
Many people have been complaining because these new cartoons don't stay true to the original cartoons. I still think they're as good as the originals. My ratings:
VOICES: (3/5). The characters' voices are okay. The truly perfect voices belong to Bugs, Daffy, Elmer, Marvin, Porky, Pepe, Yosemite Sam, Granny, Taz, Cecil, Beaky, Foghorn, Mandrake, Witch Hazel, and Dr.Moron. The other voices sound too different for my liking. Sylvester sounds too wimpy, Tweety sounds like a mid-aged thug, Petunia Pig sounds like Mandy from "The Grim Adventures Of Billy and Mandy", Sylvester Jr. sounds exactly like Daffy (yes, they're voiced by the same person, but they differentiate a bit).
EPISODES: (4/5). The episodes themselves are very funny, with very memorable lines. Examples:
GRANNY: I am the ghost of Christmas Present.
SYLVESTER: But it's April.
GRANNY: Never argue with a ghost.
STONE COLD DUCK: Remember the three "I's". Visualize, maximize, and...I'll be right back.
PORKY: Nope. No. Aah!
ANIMATION: (5/5). I know that more than a third of it is Xeroxed over and over again, though, for some reason, I like stock footage (or as I like to call it,"repeat animation".
Overall, a very good cartoon movie. I especially like the last cartoons on the DVD (the "Planet Of The Apes" spoof).
That's NOT all folks!!!!.......2004-08-21
I've read the reviews. I don't get them at all. Some have pointed out there is 'Less than an hour' of material. They must not have watched the one i watched. This one had 19 shorts that came up to about 70 minutes. Sure, it's not much more, but it IS more. Also, on the animation, while sometimes a bit on the 'choppy' side, it is very well done. And, as far as comparing these to the classics, why would you want to do that? That was a different era altogether! Why would making a cartoon about Hitler or Bing Crosby be funny today? Fact is, it wouldn't. Why can't the Looney Tunes be allowed to grow up? Point is the Looney Tunes ,over time, have been forced to change a lot. Some will like the changes, some will not. But, please stop judging this based on what was made over 50 years ago! My wife was only minorly interested, but she's not a fan. My son and myself watched these with glee. The strange situations they get in to. The hilarious 'pop-ins' of the MANY Warner-Bros. characters were perfect. Escpecially TAZ. Great extras including even a VIDEO GAME that is great fun. Step out of the time bubble and let the web-toons' grow up! The more they mature, the better they will get.
Awful - if you love the old stuff, stay away.......2004-06-06
If you, like me, love the old ("classic" ?) looney tunes,
DO NOT BUY this one. I bought an earlier one (Golden
Classics or some such title) and I (and my wife and children)
loved (most) of the earlier DVD. We did not even finish this
DVD, and we will not. None liked it. It seems that there
was one (1) episode we regarded as almost ok, but that's it.
If you like whereever this stuff came from fine, but be
aware that this is lightyears differernt from the classics.

good movie
fun, suspenseful, witty, sad, and will definetly keep you scratching your head while at the same time say i had no idea that was going to happen
the ending of the movie is definetly worth the wait
I never heard of that movie, tell me more..........2005-09-29
This is one of those movies you see in the $5.50 bin at wal-mart, except it is a really good movie. This movie has a great cast and a really good origonal score, it blends well with the movie.
The movie starts at an airport with a delayed flight. An author is going to a book signing and sparks a conversation with someone and tells the story he wrote...Just wait 'till the end of the movie, you will be surprised!
One accidental murder leads to them disposing of the body, and then having the car towed (with the body still inside!) and then them having to kill the car shop owner to save their hides.
The ending has a crazy twist you wont guess, I swear! it is all turned around! sorry, I don't spoil great movies. :-)

A group of best buddies prepare themselves to dispose of a cop's naked corpse that just happens to be resting on the floor of nice guy Mackenzie Astin's (Jared Roth) apartment. Accident? Murder? Something even more sinister? It hardly matters as the cover-up only leads to more dead bodies, driving trust-fund idiot Natasha Gregson Wagner (far too convincing as a blathering bubblehead) completely loony: she starts lining up future victims with the enthusiasm of an assassin in training. That's just the first act of this darkly comic tale of murder and manipulation among a group of double-crossing pals. It's an often-clever film in a far too familiar genre of twisty, cynical, self-conscious, Tarantino-inspired thrillers. Dina Meyer is delicious as an ambitious singer and ostensible group leader who knows more than she's letting on, and Todd Field is a simmering and suspicious member of the cover-up, the only genuinely unpredictable element of the film. It's hardly original, but director Eric Bross has some fun with the story and injects enough sly black humor to make the film intriguing and entertaining to the end. --Sean Axmaker
Description
How well do you know your friends? How well do you really know anyone? Strange events spiral out of control in one surreal night for four best friends. One innocent killing becomes an accidental double homicide, and murder doesn't seem like a crime when a third victim gets in the friends' way. With a car trunk full of corpses, they need a better plan to save their own hides. Plot twists and white knuckle thrills make this movie a sleeper hit you'll love.

ordinary people become murderers.......2004-07-02
well it is safe to say that I survived this movie but I didnt quite like it all that much. there were things about it that were just too blah. Dina Meyer(Starship Troopers, Johnny Mnemonic) is the hottie in this movie. Todd Field(Eyes Wide Shut, Twister) is the cool guy in this movie. Mackenzie Astin(Sean Astin's brother) is the crazy guy in this movie and Natasha Gregson Wagner(Modern Vampires, Another Day In Paradise) is the annoying one in this movie. Field has written a book called Stranger Than Fiction and he tells the tale to a man at a bar. Astin murders a gay police officer and things go downhill from there. It just spirals into twists that are far too perdictiable but some funny, like the hobo in the back of the car. The old lady had the funniest death of them all. If your a fan of any of the actors you should watch but if your not it's ok if you dont. Also that whole in different colors switch doesnt help at all
DARK MYSTERY.......2004-01-16
At the start of this under appreciated little gem, we meet four typical "yuppie" characters: the lovely Dina Meyer (in one of her best roles yet); the smartly handsome Mackenzie Astin; the straightlaced teacher Todd Field; and the unusually ditzy rich girl, the absolutely fabulous Natasha Gregson Wagner. The first half of the film definitely belongs to the girls, with Wagner just a barrel of laughs. The way these murders occur seems like something out of a three stooges film, but being the schizophrenic film it is, it grows darker and darker, with some interesting plot twists and brutal killings.
The wedding scene is hilarious; Gregson's attempts to murder the nosy old lady neighbor is brilliant; wait till you see how much poison she puts in the woman's cup!
This movie entertained me and made me gasp a couple of times too. Although the sardonic twists are effective, it's a shame to see how these four people are torn apart.
I LOVED IT!
Dina Meyer + Interesting Story = Gold.......2002-01-03
Before I even knew what the film was about, I wanted to see it. i am a huge fan of the beautiful and talented Ms. Meyer and I make it a point to see all of her projects. After discovering what the film was about, I became even more interested in seeing it. I finally saw it, and it far surpassed my expectations. what can I say? I love darkly comedic films such as this, and although the film was obviously inspired by Tarantino and his imitators, it happens to come off as fresh and original. I was thouroughly entertained throughout the entire film and I was surprised by several of the plot twists.
This film also had some great acting. Dina Meyer was, of course, superb. I was pleasantly surprised by both MacKenzie Astin and Todd Field. I had never heard of either of them, and I thought they both turned in fine performances. I was familiar with Natasha Gregson Wagner mainly from Modern Vampires (another great but not well known film) and I thought she was very impressive in ths film.
The DVD itself is nothing to call home about. It is pretty Bare Bones and fullscreen to boot. However, I'm just happy to have this gem preserved on DVD and I will take what I can get.
PS This movie had one of the coolest opening credit sequences I have seen in a while!
Strange Is Always Good.......2001-11-04
I knew absolutely nothing about this movie when I bought it and honestly, wasn't expecting what I got. This film should be more known than what it is because it is an incredible film. Yes, it is far from an original idea (how well do you know your friends?) and it plays with many non-original concepts, but the acting and storyline make up for whatever the movie lacks. Dina Meyer is fantastic in this film and for anyone who hasn't ever heard of her, please watch this and then everything else she's ever done. Todd Field is also remarkable, as is the rest of the cast. It goes to show that a film doesn't need big names to make a film good or an original idea. How the characters interact with each other alone is enough to make this movie great. The dialogue is funny at times and then makes your mouth drop. The only thing wrong with the DVD is that it's not in widescreen. Otherwise, buy this. Buy it now!
Great comedy-thriller!.......2001-08-16
This surprisingly funny thriller is nothing but a must-see for all people who like black comedies. The storyline circles around four friends who are getting involved with several more or less dead bodies.
The acting is good but Natasha Gregson Wagner stands out with a wonderful comic/comedy performance. She delivers 99 per cent of the laughs especially in the sequence where they try to get rid of the first body and in the scenes after the old ladies death.
Absolutely worth watching especially if you like Natasha!!!
Last but not least: don't forget to watch the ending credits!
