Buffed-up action star Vin Diesel plays a reckless DEA agent in A Man Apart, which aspires to merge big-budget action fare with a grittier, The French Connection-style procedural drama. When his wife is murdered by a mysterious drug lord called Diablo, Sean Vetter (Diesel) loses his moral bearings and risks the lives of his fellow agents in a quest for revenge. A Man Apart tries to give Diesel the opportunity to demonstrate a greater emotional range, but it's a mess; the supposedly tender scenes are generic and flat, while the action scenes are utterly incomprehensible. Much of the time it's unclear who's a cop and who's a thug, so when people get shot--and a lot of people get shot--it just becomes a bland wash of blood and bullets. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:
Diesel At His Best - Just Plain Ruthless.......2006-09-17
This is one movie that does not hold back - the story of a DEA agent avenging his wife's death and his assault on the cartel responsible for her death. To use the term "ruthless abandon" to describe Diesel's character and his actions is an understatement here and that is what makes this movie so great - quite similar to Denzel Washinton's character in Man On Fire. If you like it rough and ruthless this is definitely one for you!
Diesel's Best Performance Yet..........2006-01-10
Revenge movies generally do well with American film audiences, if for no other reason than that they achieve something that other film genres cannot. This type of film speaks to our sense of justice, when someone we love has had some wrong done to them, whether they be hurt, robbed, or worse, be killed, we want to go and set things right. However, in reality we cannot always act on these feelings, as much as we may want to, which is where these movies come in. For one, we don't actually have to go through any real pain or suffering, we simply vicariously live through the characters on screen, and through the emotional connection that is made, if something should happen to one of them, it instantly stirs that feeling for justice to be done.
"A Man Apart" is the story of a volatile DEA agent, Sean Vetter (Vin Diesel), who along with his partner Demetrius Hicks (Larenz Tate), go undercover to bring down the top Mexican drug lord. With the toppling of the top drug lord in Mexico, a new cartel begins to assume control of Mexico, led by a man called Diablo, this new drug cartel is even more ruthless than the one before it. To get the attention of the DEA, more importantly Sean Vetter, Diablo orders a hit on him, Vetter narrowly escapes with his life, sadly his wife was not so lucky. Vowing to take revenge on Diablo, Vetter strikes a deal with the very drug lord he just put away, and with the aid of his DEA partner, Demetrius, sets out to deliver his own lethal brand of justice.
Many revenge films have been hugely successful in Hollywood such as, "Desperado", "The Punisher", "Four Brothers", and many others. Now, "A Man Apart" can be added to the list, directed by F. Gary Gray (director of "The Negotiator" and "The Italian Job"), "A Man Apart" delivers a solid story of a broken man, that has lost the love of his life, and will stop at nothing until those responsible feel his wrath. Vin Diesel delivers possibly his best performance to date, showing a wide range of emotions that he hadn't needed to portray in his previous films "Pitch Black" or "The Fast and the Furious", though some doubted his acting ability, Vin proves here that he is more than just another action hero. The supporting cast is fairly strong, Larenz Tate is solid for the most part, as Vin's right-hand man, there are some weak spots in his performance, but they can be overlooked. The action is fast-paced and frantic, but serves to show the fractured state of Vetter's life without his wife. A problem many films of this genre can suffer from is an over-reliance on action, with not enough of a story to keep the audience engaged. "A Man Apart" succeeds in eluding this pitfall, with a story that continues to engage the audience emotionally, so that the vengeance doesn't seem pointless.
If you enjoy revenge tales or are a fan of Vin Diesel, then this is definitely a movie you should see. Also, if you are one of the many nay-sayers regarding Vin Diesel's movies or his acting, then you should put your skepticism aside and give "A Man Apart" a try, I believe you will quickly see that Diesel definitely has what it takes to be more than just an average action star in Hollywood.
"A Man Apart" is rated R for violence, language, and brief nudity/sensuality.
I admit it.......2005-08-19
I'm a Vin Deisel fan. This is a little out of the ordinary for him. This isn't your straight out action film, but has a good background and story development. A must see for any action film fan.
Not Bad for a Modern Action Flick.......2005-07-30
As someone who grew up watching the action films of the 80s---Chuck Norris, Stallone, Schwarzenegger and others---I fully expected A Man Apart to follow along the same lines. In some ways I ended up being pleasantly surprised, and in some ways I didn't.
The surprise came from the fact that Vin Diesel truly does have a fair amount of acting ability and showed good emotional range as the husband of a murdered wife who becomes obsessed with finding her killers. Vin does well as the strong, silent type with an explosive temper. The bad came from the fact that the basic plot of this film made very little sense, especially the big "who-dunnit" at the end. Was a big chunk of the movie edited out or what? When the main villian is revealed, it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. As we get further along in the movie, the writing lapses into the same old cliches and tired old lines that popped up in all those 80s movies I was talking about. The ending could have been ripped off from Cobra, Commando or one of those other flicks chock full of lame one-liners. I expected more from the ending, frankly, but I can't say that the rest of the movie was altogether bad. A Man Apart is worth viewing at least once.
Shameless destruction of the spanish language.......2005-04-17
This is an okay movie, not a great movie. I would see it on TV but not rent, or own, much less pay full box office ticket for it. The reason? Even when Vin Diesel proves he has grown and matured as an actor, his producers haven't. Only one character in the whole movie expresses an acceptable spanish phrase, (Mateo, played by Juan Fernandez) Again the Hollywood establishment is guilty of the same offensive crime over and over. Hiring Latino "looking" actors for terrible spanish renditions of their lines. It seems no one cares in the end for the latino box office dollar.
The Main spanish speaking character in the movie is colombian, a pronunciation that happens to sound different than mexican, than guatemalan, than argentinian, than venezuelan; Yet he sounds like a 12 hour audio tape graduate. Also the producers fall all over again for the cliche of Colombia as a poor version of Juan Valde'z hillside, burros included.
If you are latino, and have a sense of humor see this movie, If you are a latino without a sense of humor, skip it altogether.

AWESOME.......2007-02-18
This DVD truly highlights the skill that Rage Against the Machine had and only makes fans want the band to get back together. Watching this makes you feel as though you are really at the concert. Overall - SICK! BUY IT!
Not the Best, But Worthy..........2006-09-26
The now defunct Rage Against the Machine (all members except vocalist Zack De La Rocha can be found in Audioslave) put out four albums and three DVD's in their 8-year career. I've heard (and loved) all the albums and after seeing this, I've seen 2 DVD's. The other one I saw was the one that was at The Grand Olympic Auditorium, Rage's last show. This was put out not long before that...The performances are better on the other DVD, this DVD is better for Bonus Features and you get to see (a little) what the band is like offstage and out of the studio. Out of the 4 band members, you hear the most from Zack de la Rocha. I think if you've ever listened to his lyrics, you realize the dude is smart. Hearing him speak and interview people (as well as the intercut documentary sequence included during the concert) you realize he's really smart AND he knows what he's talking about. Tom Morello (guitarist) is a Harvard graduate and also appears to be pretty smart. The other members Brad Wilk (drums) and Tim Commerford (drums), don't speak that much. Well, Wilk doesn't. Commerford doesn't say anything anywhere. The show is great, everyone's in top-form as far as performances...But Zack delays some of his vocals a little bit. For people who don't know what I mean...Instead of "The microphone explodes, shattering the molds" it's "The microphone (inhales), shattering da...Molds."
The set list is as follows:

Pure Rage.......2006-04-11
RATM is one of the greatest bands ever. It's not even debatable. I miss them, their music, and their message. This is of course a must have for any Rage fan. I can't find anything bad to say about this dvd or anything Rage put out. I highly recommend you pick this up if you don't own it.
By the way, this dvd is NOT out of print. There are some sellers, here on Amazon, who are trying to rip off us Rage fans by charging $45 and up for this dvd. Those sellers should know that this dvd can be found, BRAND NEW, for 13 bucks or less. Don't believe me? Check out pricegrabber. Note to those sellers: just because Amazon doesn't carry this dvd, does NOT mean it's out of print.
Good RATM DVD, But Not The Best!!!!!.......2006-02-23
This is a very good DVD of RATM. The song selections are good. The video shots are clear and closeup. The song selection includes Calm Like A Bomb, Bulls On Parade, and Killing In The name of. I have just two concerns about this DVD, and I think that anyone who plans on purchasing it should be made aware. First, the DVD has "freeze frames" inserted periodically throughout the video. It is hard to explain but the best way I can try is that it looks as though the DVD is scratched and skipping. This does not effect the sound, it took a few times of watching to get used to. It's just some video trick used after production, a type of enhancement. It just doesn't work well with a live show like RATM. The second problem I have is with the sound on Bulls On Parade. All of the other songs except this one seemed to be mixed great. The vocals on Bulls on Parade are almost nonexistant and are what an engineer would call "at the back of the mix". In other words the music is way to loud for the vocals and therefore are drowned out. Other than that this is an good DVD. If I didn't own any RATM DVDs, I would suggest getting one of the others first.
Live is Best.......2005-10-05
RATM fan or not, the intensity and energy this band gives off in their live performances is undeniable. It is this same energy and intensity that initially drew me to them, wheich led to learning more about the substance of their messages, which led to an understanding of other views and opinions previously foreign to me. The live footage in this DVD in Mexico City is incredible, and the additional featurettes can open your mind to what they're about. Good stuff.

Description
The beauty and strength of the women of Juchitán, "Mexico's matriarchy", have inspired legends and songs for centuries, as well as recent tabloid stories of male harems and free love. This delightful documentary sets out to separate fact from folklore and sociology from sensationalism. Blossoms of Fire shows these women in all their brightly colored, opinionated glory as they run their own businesses, embroider their signature of fiery flowers and comment with angry humor on articles in the foreign press depicting them as a promiscuous matriarchy.
Customer Reviews:
Matriarchal Society Gets Noticed.......2007-01-25
BLOSSOMS OF FIRE is visually appealing and contains some very interesting information on the relationships between women and men, women and business, and women and politics in Oaxaca, Mexico. The wonderful colors that infuse almost every scene are one of this documentary's biggest draws. That the women of the area make most of their apparel by hand is well known, and many of the dress items are sought after by locals and foreigners alike.
The women are what this documentary is all about. The focus is on the matriarchal society that once existed (and maybe still does) in this area. Women run many of the businesses, are highly independent, and are deeply involved in the politics of the region. Film makers Maureen Gosling and Ellen Osborne dive into the culture of Oaxaca and take the viewer with them as some of the people of Oaxaca comment on this area's cultural significance. Some say that there is no matriarchal hierarchy, while others say there is. Perhaps the matriarchal nature of the area is so ingrained in the people of Oaxaca that they don't even notice it. Or perhaps it's just a bunch of media hype to make the area more interesting. Who knows.
The cleanliness of the area is what will impress many watchers, too. Most rural areas of Mexico tend to look unkempt, with hogs and dogs running amuck through tattered streets, and the residence wearing holey clothes. Not so here. The streets are swept clean, the people impeccably dressed, and not a hog or dog to be seen.
The area is also a hotbed of anti-Mexican governmentalism. Fiercely independent by nature, the women (and men) protect their identity with rabid ferocity. But they also accept change and integrate it into their society ...but in a way that befits their Oaxacan culture rather than one that eats away at it.
The film does stray some when it starts discussing the acceptance of homosexuality and lesbianism, though. Although interesting, it isn't what drove this area of Mexico to its current high level of female sophistication.
Even so, this is interesting information and the bright adornments on all the beautiful women is pure eye-candy.

Intriguing Tony Bill-directed film, based on a quirky screenplay by playwright John Patrick Shanley. Set in the Bronx in the early 1960s, Five Corners deals with the effects of the release from prison of the neighborhood psycho (John Turturro), who is free to once again stalk the woman of his dreams (Jodie Foster). Her boyfriend (Todd Graff) is crippled and can't save her. The neighborhood tough guy who did rescue her last time (Tim Robbins) has decided to become a nonviolent pacifist working for civil rights and refuses to lift his hand in violence. A strange, fascinating mix, including several set pieces that come out of nowhere to energize an already edgy story. --Marshall Fine

Five Corners is so filled with inspired, memorable moments that it's tough to completely fault it when it inanely begins spiraling out of control towards the conclusion. After all, the entire picture is so beautifully messy from the outset that any hope for rational tie-ups is equally absurd. This indie ensemble piece (back when John Turturro, Jodie Foster, and Tim Robbins were considered indie actors) follows a group of Bronx teenagers during a 48-hour period in 1964. At the center of the action is just-released, unreformed rapist Heinz (a sinister turn by Turturro), who returns to his old neighborhood looking for payback. His victim, Linda (Foster), calls on her protector--and the man who put Heinz in jail--Harry (Robbins), but unfortunately, her hero now listens to Dylan and preaches antiviolence. After Heinz bludgeons a penguin from the zoo (director Tony Bill's way of showing that Heiz is crazy!), he turns his attention to Linda. As he moves to a desperately unnecessary violent climax, Bill tries showing a cross-section of these tense times but never has a firm grasp of the era. It's definitely not your usual period piece. Screenwriter and former playwright John Patrick Shanely (Moonstruck) uses a number of surreal touches (people are shot with arrows, girls huff glue in the back of convertibles, mothers are tossed out of windows, and then there's that penguin) that keep you off guard. Oddly, this is a film that you admire more afterward than you enjoy it while watching it. Note: Cinematographer Fred Murphy's compositions are shamefully lost on this cut-rate DVD transfer. The picture quality is often hazy, and hardly better than a low-cost video. --Dave McCoy
Customer Reviews:
Very good film in lousy DVD transfer.......2006-11-04
This is a quirky drama that mixes light touches and the very serious in unexpected and unpredictable ways. Set in the Bronx in 1964, John Turturro plays a menacing newly ex-con who returns to his neighborhood with some pent up anger. Jodie Foster plays the timid victim of the the attempted rape that sent him to prison; Tim Robbins is the one who saved her by cracking Turtorro over the head with a pitcher. All the action happens over a couple days, as Turturro seeks to reestablish contact with Foster, Foster seeks Robbins' protection while trying to keep her boyfriend who was injured in the attempted rape from getting hurt again, and Robbins gets ready to become a freedom rider for civli rights. A subplot involves a couple out-of-control women and a couple mischief-making men who provide some comic relief and more.
Though very much its own thing, the mood actually reminded me of American Graffiti and Diner at times. There is a slightly surreal edge throughout. It includes a peculiar usage of the famous duet from Delibes' Lakme. The acting from Turturro is particularly impressive, and the rest are good too. The acting and rich dramatic texture drew me in so that I was willing to follow the odd turns without complaints. Unlike some, I didn't think the film fell apart at the end. It made as much sense as the rest of the film and had some strong dramatic content. Very much worth seeing.
The DVD I have is from Disc Plaza. The transfer is somewhat dark, soft, pixelly at times, not very good color, pan and scan. Sound is OK mono. Because of the poor quality I had to use the stop action function to see who did what at a crucial point at the end. There are other editions out on DVD, but apparently the tranfers aren't any better than this one. (This version comes with another movie on the same DVD, Who Shot Pat, which is very bad, and only available, I assume, because it has Sandra Bullock, with a very brief if not very revealing nude scene.)
Summer of '64 and all is not well........2006-05-08
This is an interesting time-capsule of the early 60's. Tony Bill does an excellent job of coloring the time with innocence and uncertain turmoil in this look at that era.It is marvelous to see the early Tim Robbins, John Torturro and Jodie Foster, when they responded to direction with exceptional results. A small neighborhood would have a tight group of kids with some delinquents thrown in. Foster gets pursued by Torturro's demented character and only grabs the attention of Robbins at the last instant. Robbins does such a wonderful job, you believe he is going to be in Mississippi when the lunatic strikes, and that he may not care enough. How much action can pigeons conjure up? At the end, I don't care much about the anticlimax. I just knew that I saw the finest actors of the next generation, for I know that I could have wandered onscreen with any of the three above and had a good time together. I forgive it for unravelling at the end, when it lost its spell. Most of the time it succeeds as a window to '64.
DVD transfer didn't go so well, but not terrible.......2005-04-03
Tim Robbins, Jody Foster and John Turtorro. These 3 names alone tell us how well this movie will be performed. All 3 of these fine actors will give 100% to any role they choose to accept. John Turturro plays a loser from Brooklyn straight out of prison for trying to rape Jody Foster. Tim Robbins, a wisened street kid turned civil rights peace activist, saved her from the first attack. Now, with Turturro on the loose, Foster returns to Tim Robbins for support. Good acting with a hint of comedy. 5 star movie, 3 star DVD transfer. It's still worth owning at this price.
Quirky Film about 1960s Bronx.......2005-02-24
Producer/Director Tony Bill's "Five Corners" is blessed with a decent - if often messy - screenplay from noted playwright John Patrick Shanley and splendid performances from John Turturro, Jode Foster, and especially, Tim Robbins. To his credit, Bill captures successfully the spirit of the Bronx in the early 1960s, inspite of Shanley's confusing screenplay. The film follows the fortunes and misfortunes of several teenagers for 48 hours. Turturro is especially effective as the sinister psychopath Heinz, newly released from prison, who is obsessed with neighborhood gal Linda (Jodie Foster), whose crippled boyfriend (Todd Graff) is unable to help her ward off Heinz's advances. In desperation she turns to Harry (Tim Robbins), the fellow who had put Heinz into prison, but he is now more concerned with the Civil Rights movement, Bob Dylan's music, and preaching nonviolence, than resuming his role as Linda's enforcer. Robbins' performance is nearly as memorable as Turturro's (I was pleasantly surprised to see Tim Robbins on the big screen, since my last memory of him was back in high school!); both of their performances nearly overshadow Foster's usual excellent work.

I AM RATING THE DIGITAL QUALITY OF THE DVD, NOT THE MOVIE!
The one star is far too much praise for the digital quality of this "Direct Source Special Products Inc." brand dvd I've recieved . Far better to get the vhs copy, as this was so obviously dubbed from one, except that they left out all the colour and is so dark it is almost impossible to see! Does anyone know where a quality version of this film can be found on dvd?
I do however like this movie, and was looking forward to seeing it again. It was the first time I had seen Tim Robbins, and John Turturro, and really enjoyed both of their performances. Particularly Johns portrayal of the sinister Heinz character. I remember it to be a little shakey in its ending but really enjoyed it otherwise. Check it out, but be careful of which copy you purchase!

Great director's commentary.......2005-06-27
The movie itself was pretty good, if only for the scenery of Mexico City. The movie was mostly shot there and captures the city perfectly in all of its glory and all of its horror. But the real thing to watch for on the DVD is the director's commentary. It's not one or two scenes, but the ENTIRE movie. I watched it twice for that reason. The director gives fantastic insight into making movies and particularly interesting were his stories about filming in one of the most dangerous cities in the world, including crew being kidnapped. A must watch.
Exciting action film.......2003-08-03
I highly recommend this action film. The plot is full of suspense, the actors are well cast, and the setting feels realistic.
Definetely watchable if not applaudable.......2003-06-28
I was quite suprised to find my self sitting down to take in this movie twice right after I had already watched it once.
In a place like Mexico, where one tends to think that the triple threat of death violence and corruption are more rampant than other parts of North America, this movie takes a more or less sublime approach in its portrayal of it.
The contrast on the psychological landscape is onmipresent. Whereas in parts the movie seems rather slow and dull, it is the constant threat of violence from one incident to the next that propels the movie in a reverse spiral that keeps the movie goer engaged.
Also in Hollywood, it is rare to find sibling pictures that involve the relationship of brother/sister and the main protagonist, in search of her brother, is admirable in her selfless and heroic effort to locate him.
A dazzling ending that is impossible to guess up until the final farame, shows the ingenuity of the writer and the story line and gives one pause for thought long after the final credits have rolled up.
Highly recommended.
Brave heroine in Mexican setting.......2003-01-02
This is not an "action-packed" movie, rather it has a more subdued suspense, and that's why I liked it. The main character, Mitch, a woman who is trying to recover from the death of her two children, finds herself in a life and death situation with a network of criminals while traveling with her brother in Mexico. When her brother suddenly disappears, she sets out to find him. Her ongoing grief and despair over her children is what actually give her an edge when she faces her would-be killers. For one thing, she really doesn't care if she dies, yet she really does want to find her brother who has gone missing in this underground world, because he is the only person she has left. Her combination of bravery, determination, and yet a willingness to die is just enough to confound her attackers, and I had a sense of respect for her character.
The Mexican man who helps Mitch find her way around is very likable, and gives a good contrast to the grimness of the other characters and tense situations. The setting in Mexican locales is interesting...and although they whiz by quicky, there are shots of a quaint village scene, a marketplace, winding streets, a long desert road, along with the harsher scenes of bar life, and the hovels made of tin and cardboard that serve as houses. Other than the movie ending rather abruptly, without a great sense of closure, I found it to be satisfying entertainment,
Entertaining and suspenseful.......2002-10-01
I enjoyed this movie pretty much from beginning to end. It was not predictable and kept my interest. It was good to see a female character who was determined and brave. Also, the Mexican taxi driver was great as well! While the plot is a little implausible, if you suspend your disbelief, you may find the story quite absorbing and suspenseful. I recommend it for the characters and the exciting action. Stacy Edwards was outstanding.
