Product Description
Based on a play by Sidney Kingsley, THE BOWERY BOYS movies proved to be a popular look at life in a poverty-stricken New York neighborhood. Also called THE DEAD END KIDS, the actors who portrayed the boys played up some hair-raising situations for laughs, creating a series of endearing films which spanned several decades. This collection includes 10 of the best BOWERY BOYS movies.

I Don't own it.......2007-05-11
I'm an East Side Kids, Dead End Kids, and Bowery Boys fan. One of the biggest reasons I won't buy it is they don't tell you what movies you're getting. I have the other collection sold here called "The East Side Kids 10 Bowery Classics" and it's good and would suggest getting that one instead of this one. Especially after reading other reviews about how poor the picture quality is and the logo in the lower right hand corner through the whole movie stinks also.

Not quite what I expected.......2006-08-18
I thought this would include at least some of the Bowery Boys movies, based on the title. But it turns out none of those movies are available legally. No matter, the East Side Kids are still pretty funny, and you can see how they evolved into the famed Bowery Boys. My other complaint is that the overall picture and sound quality are not the best!
THE GOOD OLD DAYS IN THE HUDON RIVER &NYC.......2006-07-17

Ten Blurs.......2006-04-22
The Passport editions of ten of the East Side Kids movies is a cheap way to get to know one of the fun series of the early 1940's. Cheap is in both senses.
I had already collected a set of Alpha Video and Platinum Disc Corporation editions but had hoped to find editions with better picture and sound quality. Passport didn't do it.
Only occasionally would the quality even equal that of Alpha or Platinum. Usually the quality was markedly worse. There was even missing footage. For example, the opening scene of "Bowery Blitzkrieg" on Alpha and Platinum has Danny (Bobby Jordan) drilling his economics lesson while using a punching bag. Passport starts the movie from a later scene, Muggs (Leo Gorcey) bullying the bad guy.
Passport puts a faint "Bowery Boys / East Side Kids" logo in the lower-right corner throughout. The other two editions do not do this.
No edition has any meaningful extras. I have little hope these films will be cleaned up, Criterion style.
Alpha Video tends to have the best quality on its single-film DVD's, but Platinum's four-paks come close and are more cost-effective. Passport runs last on all counts.
not what I was looking for.......2006-03-01
I was looking for the series that had the bowery boys in the malt shop at the start of each movie. I think this was the later ones. these are good but not what I wanted.

The East Side Kids at their best!.......2007-07-05
For those of you not familiar with The East Side Kids, these are two excellent movies to begin with. The East Side Kids, led by Leo Gorcey and Bobby Jordan, are a group of teens always getting into trouble. In the first movie, they find a nazi spy headquarters in a 'haunted' house. In the second, they are off in the country in a camp for troubled teens and end up in another haunted house with a murderer. Bela Lugosi plays a small part in the first film and a more integral part in the second. Each film is just over an hour in length. So grab a cup of hot chocolate, curl up on the couch and enjoy these great classic films!
Good quality, worth more than they are charging!.......2005-02-23
GHOSTS ON THE LOOSE is nice and sharp, with good audio. This spooky entry involves BELA LUGOSI and some Nazi spies.
SPOOKS RUN WILD is a little softer but the audio is still good. The boys meet BELA LUGOSI again, this time in a spooky old house full of secret passageways!

On a 1 to 10 scale, this collection is rated: 5.2.......2007-06-25
This new item from MILL CREEK ENTERTAINMENT contains only a handful of titles previously released by them.
NIGHT SCREAMS is an excellent collection of mostly-forgotten fright and suspense films that's sure to please all vintage movie fans.
Some NIGHT SCREAMS trivia:
THE GHOST AND THE GUEST was written by funnyman Morey Amsterdam (of THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW).
A SHOT IN THE DARK has been used as a movie title on eight separate occasions.
THE FACE AT THE WINDOW is the name of a dozen different movies.
THE TELL-TALE HEART is the repetition winner however, having been used as a title for 21 films! This 1960 version is not an adaptation of the Poe short story of the same name. The only connection to Poe might be the lead character, who just happens to be called Edgar.
MANFISH, on the other hand, was actually based on the writings of Edgar Allan Poe.
Ava Gardner appearing together with those goofy Bowery Boys? Yes, it's not only true, but the fellas were given top billing in GHOSTS ON THE LOOSE.
If you think you'd enjoy these films, then MILL CREEK's previously issued SUSPENSE 50 MOVIE PACK COLLECTION may also be of interest to you.
.
The averaged-out 1 to 10 rating for NIGHT SCREAMS was calculated from polling data maintained by a film resource website. The current score for this DVD set is: 5.2.

Entertaining Mystery Adventure.......2007-06-21
The film begins in an urban setting. The East Side Kids are taken in and placed on a bus for a ride into the country for two weeks. They hear a warning about a maniac who has killed three persons and may be in the vicinity. At night the boys hear some howling. A stranger comes to visit the long empty Billings estate. Dr. Van Grosch shows up next and asks the station master to keep his presence secret. The boys go exploring the countryside at night; a shot is fired and the boys seek refuge at a lone house. The owner leads them upstairs to a bedroom so PeeWee can rest well. The others will stay in another room. [There is no electricity in those days.]
PeeWee awakes and walks out of the room. The boys show up and search for him. They wander around the house. Some of the jokes are no longer funny. A stranger offers a ride to the nurse and she accepts. In town the men get their firearms to search for the monster at the Billings estate. The identity of the mysterious stranger is revealed. Linda screams and the men rush to her aid. The monster is caught for a happy ending. [This story will not strain your brain.]
FUN BECAUSE OF BELA.......2004-09-29
There isn't much middle ground when if comes to opinions on the east side kids/Bowery Boys. People seem to love them or hate them. I've always been a fan since I was a kid and a local channel used to show one of their movies every Saturday afternoon.
Spooks Run Wild is the first meeting of the Kids and Bela Lugosi. The second being Ghosts on the Loose. In it..the kids are travelling to a camp out in the sticks where the "monster killer" just happens to be on the loose.
The kids sneak out of their cabin in the middle of the night to walk into town. Cutting through a cemetary Pee wee is shot with buckshot by a night watchman. The rest of the boys carry pee wee to a mysterious old mansion on top of a hill.
The mansion just happens to be home of Bela Lugosi (Nardo the Magician)and his midget assistant Luigi (played by Freaks star Angelo Rossitto).
Well as you might expect the kids run wild throughout the mysterious mansion, hiding out from Lugosi who they are convinced is the killer.
Along the way there's the usual slapstick humor that the kids are known for with Muggs (Leo Gorcey) bossing around the rest of the group. Scruno (Sammy Morrison)steals as he does in ghosts on the Loose with his wide-eyed panic routine.
Of course, Lugosi would turn out to be (once again) the red-herring and the real killer is later revealed as the kids save the day and catch the fiend.
Good fun and just over an hour so it's not a great commitment. Lugosi is his usual menacing self who somehow doesn't remember to tell the kids he's a magician just to make it even more menacing.
Fun, In a Goofy Sort of Way.......2004-07-08
The Bowery Boys have always struck me as a little creepy. Men in their forties pretending to be pre-teens has struck me as very jarring (sort of like Roberto Benigni in "Pinocchio"). Still, you could find worse comedians, and in this movie, they at least have the benefit of starring with the always wonderful Bela Lugosi. Basically, it's just the Bowery Boy's running around Lugosi's haunted house. It's kind of fun, in an odd way. The only major drawback is the presence of some racist jokes ("Put on some whitewash before you sneek up on me in the dark").
The DVD from Alpha looks good enough. Some shots are scratchy, others are dark, and the blacks aren't as solid as they should be, but it's as clear as you're likely to find "Spooks Run Wild." Unsurprisingly, there are no extras.
East Side Kids meet Bela Lugosi for the first time........2004-03-17
The East Side boys make more trouble again. Usually they are sent back to reform school. But this time they are put in a bus and taken to a small town. At a soda fountain shoppe, they hear on the radio that a "monster" killer is on the loose. The boys have aroom to sleep in at the camp. At a gas station, Bela Lugosi as "Nardo" (Dracula [1931]) comes to town with his midget assistant, "Luigi" (Angelo Rossitto). They are looking for the Billings Estate. The gas station attendent says no one has been there since the killings ten years ago. Later, the gas station attendant meets Dr. Von Grosch (Dennis Moore). He tells the doctor he knows who he is and that he is looking for the "monster" killer. The man up ahead is the monster killer. The gas staion attendent keeps the secret of Von Grosch being in town. The boys go roamin' and they come across the graveyard at the Billings Estate. They are taken into the estate and there they meet the killer. They must stay in this spooky manor overnight. They want to get back to the camp, but they can't leave Pee Wee (played by David Gorcey, Leo's brother) who is under a spell. This is one of the more entertaining and popular films of the series. Next film in the series is: MR. WISE GUY (1943). The East Side Kids "Spooks Run Wild", Donald Haines was in World War II. It is not known if he was Missing In Action or died.
Bela Lugosi with dwarf Angelo Rossitto later appeared in SCARED TO DEATH (1947).

Gang must help Gabriel Dell. Gale Storm co-stars........2004-04-30
This is the ninth film for the East Side Kids (Leo Gorcey, Bobby Jordan, Huntz Hall, Gabriel Dell, Bobby Stone, Sunshine Sammy Morrison, David Gorcey). A new member is introduced as "Stash", Stanley Clements joins the gang. Since they helped the police in finding the crooks behind the magnesium ring operation in LET's GET TOUGH, now they are trying to help Gabriel Dell hide from the police. Gabriel wants to break away from the gang and swears he is never coming back. Just as he trys to go out the hide-out door, Officer Joe Reagan (Roger Pryor) is hot on Gabriel's trail. He looks around the hide-out. Nothing. When the boys think the coast is clear, Gabriel tells the gang again he is not coming back. He opens the door and Officer Reagan is right there and he overheard the boys clear their names. So Gabriel is off to jail for participation in a hold-up. Gale Storm plays Danny's (Bobby Jordan) sister. Notice the ad-lib Huntz Hall does at the end of the film. Leo Gorcey puts water on himself after kissing a nurse. Huntz Hall spits some water back at him.
The next film in the series: 'NEATH BROOKLYN BRIDGE (1942).

Crime Doesn't Pay.......2007-06-27
This film opens with a view of the Brooklyn Bridge. The East Side Kids are hanging out in the street. An alarm sounds - someone has escaped from Blackwell's Island (the prison). The boys fool around with a truck, unknowingly helping an escaped convict. Bill wants his younger brother to get a job to keep him off the streets (and Reform School). But its too late, they are pinched. There is new management at Wiltwyck now. [The film reminds us how men would worry about being underweight!] Bill Collins stops for cigarettes, there is a holdup and shooting. Bill's car is hijacked by one of the robbers and he is blamed unless he can prove his innocence.
The boys are sentenced for stealing that truck, and are working in the barnyard. Danny Collins learns of his brother's tragic fate. Charley tells Mr. Barns about his suspicions, but is punished for informing. Charley has more trouble with Muggsy. While watching a newsreel they see a face they recognize, and they learn more about the Luke Manning gang. The boys escape to track down Dorothy, the girlfriend of Luke Manning. There are some funny scenes here. Of course there is a happy ending to this more serious film in the series. It tells about big city life as seen by Hollywood. Has much changed since then?
Fairly entertaining East Side Kids Film.......2005-02-26
This is one of the Monogram cheapies that the kids so frequently did but it's not bad. Typical of their films of the 40's, a little grittier and more dramatic and less slapstick than they would become in the 1950's. In this one the kids are convicted of stealing a truck and sent to the Wilton Reform school. There they learn that Danny's brother has been sentenced to be executed for a murder he did not commit. The Kids now have to bust out of the reform school and capture the real murderer to save bill.
As noted this early Kids film is a much crime drama as it is comedy but the comedy bits are funny and the dramatic parts done as well as any B movie of the day. Well acted compared to many Monogram pictures and the film looks good, too. The reform school guards are you typical uncaring fellows who don't believe anything the kids say.
Well done Kids movie.
One of the better Alpha/Gotham Transfers.......2005-02-15
I disagree with the other revewier, the copy I got from Alpha/Gotham is fairly sharp (only 16mm prints exist on the East Side Kids films) with decent contrast & a good soundtrack. yes there are some film slpices, but I have seen much worse from Alpha.
East Side Kids back in reform school. Gabe Dell joins cast........2004-03-19
Now that the East Side Kids (Leo Gorcey, Bobby Jordan, Huntz Hall, Sammy Morrison) are done chasing spooks (SPOOKS RUN WILD [1941]), they get silly talking to mannequins. Someone escapes from prison on Blackwell's Island, so the boys go to investigate at the dock on West St. The police think the prisoner has drowned, but has not. By stealing a truck they helped the convict. The kids end up in reform school (again). Danny's (Bobby Jordan) brother, Bill, is wrongfully accused of murder. The real murderer is the same convict that got the boys in reform school. Within two days, the kids must break-out of reform school to save the life of Danny's brother before he is executed. Ann Doran is in this one and Bobby Stone too. Gabriel Dell who was over with Billy Halop, Huntz Hall and Bernard Punsly helping the Little Tough Guys joins the East Side Kids films too. The next film in the series: LET'S GET TOUGH! (1942).

Another Haunted House Mystery.......2007-06-21
The East Side Kids are practicing singing for a wedding. The couple plan to move to a house in the suburbs. The previous owners say the house next door is haunted. Emil gives orders to the real estate agent to buy back the house on Elm Street. We see the young bride (Ava Gardner). The old couple call the police to report strange events at 322 Elm Street. The boys show up to clean up for the new couple, but pick the wrong house. They "borrow" the furnishings.
Mr. & Mrs. John Gibson show up at a hotel, and get a message. They get a warning about their house. Then Emil shows up and becomes upset by the presence of the boys. There are jokes about portraits. The boys find a printing press in the cellar with Nazi pamphlets. The policemen upstairs hear nothing! Then the Gibsons show up to live in their new home. The furnishings are gone. Jack Gibson calls the police to report what the boys found. But the printing press has disappeared. Next the press is found in Jack Gibson's house. But the boys direct the police to the right place for a happy ending. [Note Bela Lugosi's sneeze.]
Good comedy entry in Dead End Kids series.......2004-12-22
But the only problem as I see it is there is hardly any even bogus supernatural elwment (despite Dracula--Bela Lugosi--being in it). All the boys do while in the house is hear a few noises and see someone stand in a picture frame. Their first entry with Lugosi (Spooks Run Wild) was a much better entry for the horror-comedy genre. This is a great, entertaining film but it has little to do with horror. Ghost and Mr. Chcken it ain't!
The East Side Kids meet Bela Lugosi again!.......2004-03-20
The East Side Kids (Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall, Bobby Jordan, Sammy Morrison, Bobby Stone, Billy Benedict, Stanley Clements) meet Bela Lugosi (Dracula [1931]) again! They met him before as "Nardo" in SPOOKS RUN WILD" (1941). This is the second East Side Kids film William Beaudine has directed since CLANCY STREET BOYS (1943). William Beaudine believes in one takes only if it can be done. It was not rare for an East Side Kid film to be done in six days. Boy did he keep a "one-take" this time! Bela thought he would have some fun. The scene where Bela Lugosi is inside the painting and sneezes the offensive word, "s***", was the first take. So Beaudine left it in the film. The plot this time: Jack (Rick Vallin) is going to marry Betty (Ava Gardner) and they have bought a huge house two miles out in the country from the subway. Later, the agent tells him, the house next door is haunted. Mugg's (Leo Gorcey) gets word that the Katzman's mob (an in-joke to producer, Stan Katzman) will crash the wedding. Bela Lugosi as "Emil" is in town. He doesn't want Jack to have that house on Elm Street. Even Emil's assistant tells him the house next door is haunted. The assistant gives him some cash and a business card to call to close the deal. Of course, he will not. Later, the boys find the card on the floor. The boys decide to decorate Jack's new house , but they go by the number on the card and go to the haunted house instead. They don't know the mistake they made. Watch the fun begin with the boys and Bela Lugosi. This is Bobby Jordan's last appearance with the East Side Kids until BOWERY CHAMPS (1944). Then re-joined them for the Bowery Boys films. The next films in the series: Mr. Muggs Steps Out (1943), MILLION DOLLAR KID (1944).
Have to love em!.......2003-07-14
The East Side Kids/Dead End Kids/Bowery Boys did it again. All your favorite guys are back again for some more fun. If you like Abbott & Costello...The Three Stooges....or The Little Rascals/Our Gang then your going to like these guys. Its fun for the whole family, good viewing you can trust with the kids. Add Bela Lugosi and a little old time spooky fun. Its good to finally see an almost forgotten piece of film history restored thanks to our friend Loyd Kaufman at Troma Studios.
The East Side Kids Meet Bela Lugosi, Again........2000-09-13
Don't be fooled by the title. Ghosts have nothing to do with this movie. This is another encounter of our hapless heroes with the dark master of the poverty row horror film. This time the East Side Kids find Bela and his gang of Nazi spies occupying a local "haunted" house. These little low budget comedies don't pretend to be any more than they are. This film has the added attraction of a very young Ava Gardner in the unlikely role of Huntz Hall's sister. Bela Lugosi had become a low-budget standby at this point in his career. The East Side Kids, if not lovable, are tolerable in small doses. Due to a misunderstanding that is worthy of the Three Stooges, the boys mistake the deserted house for a honeymoon cottage that needs a good cleaning and decorating. The spooky manse has secret panels, revolving bookcases, paintings with moving eyes, and mysterious people creeping around. The mild thrills and chills are suitable for family viewing. There are a few low brow chuckles, but The East Side Kids and Bela Lugosi had better luck with the earlier "Spooks Run Wild," reviewed elsewhere in Amazon.com. Adjust your expectations accordingly. ;-)

Classis East Side Kids move........2005-12-11
This is in reference to the Alpha Video version.
This is a classic east side kid's move where the kids help out the poor little rich boy who gets himself in a jamb. If you like the East side kids, like I do, you'll like this movie. The DVD and sound quality are terrible. You can barely see the picture at some points and the sound is scratchy to say the least. It appears it was just copied from the old films. I guess you can't expect too much for the price. There is a re-mastered copy of this video by Digiview Productions so make sure you buy that version. I haven't seen it yet but it has to be better than this one.
EAST SIDE KIDS TO THE RESCUE.......2005-02-26
Here is another Monogram produced East Side Kids film that really ranks as one of their better efforts that while funny still mixes in some drama and action before the kids would become the "boys" and move to a more slapstick format in the 1950's. John Cortland is a wealthy man who is accosted by some street punks and then rescued by Muggs and the gang. Cortland is played by Herbert Heyes who is perhaps best known for playing Mr. Gimble in both the 1947 and 1955 TV versions of "A Miracle on 34th Street".
Cortland is grateful to the kids and invites them over to his home where he provides much needed athletic equipment to the boys. However the boys soon find out that it was Cortland's own son Roy that involved in trying to mug his father. Not wanting their benefactor to find out that his son has become a street hood the gang sets out to reform the young man.
Decent Kids film. Usual laughs mixed with drama. The only bad things is that Sammy Morrison, who played Scruno, had left the team and he was always one of the funniest of all the kids.
One of the better Alpha presentations........2005-02-24
This Alpha/Gotham DVD is one of their better presentations. The picture is fairly sharp, the contrast workable, and the sound is clear. There are some minor video glitches indicating tape wear in the master video tape, but for $7.99 it is well worth it. The film used to make the tape does have lines & splices, but I did not find them distracting.
The East Side Kids help find the mugger........2004-03-20
Cousin Herbie (Al Stone) joins the gang. Gabriel Dell and friends beat up a rich older man (Herbert Hayes). The East Side Kids come to his safety. Grateful, he gives them his business card to call him tomorrow. Huntz notices the rich man mistakenly left his wallet behind with nearly a thousand dollars inside. They truly decide to return it to the man. Suddenly, the police catch the boys with the dough and down to the station they go. They call the rich man, Cortland and it's all straightened out. He invites the boys to his home to help them with gymnasium equipment they need. With the help of the East Side Kids (Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall, Bobby Stone, Billy Benedict, Dave Durrand, Jimmy Strand, Bob Gorman) and Cortland's son, Roy (Johnnie Duncan) they will catch Gabriel Dell the mugger. Bobby Stone was not credited, but I got him here. Leo Gorcey's father, Bernard Gorcey, makes an appearance as a telegram man. The next six films: Follow The Leader (1944), Block Busters (1944), Bowery Champs (1944), Docks of New York (1945), Mr. Muggs Rides Again (1945), Come Out Fighting (1945).

Classic Comedy.......2007-04-01
Clancy Street Boys has a tried but true storyline in a b-picture format. Muggs (Leo Gorcey) is having a birthday, and just like every year, his rich uncle (Noah Beery) sends him money through the mail. In the card is an announcemnt; Uncle is coming to New York with his daughter (Amelita Ward) to visit. Muggs' mother (Martha Wentworth) becomes distressed. It seems that her husband has been scamming Muggs' uncle for years, telling him that there are seven children, not one, for the extra birthday cash. In order to protect his father's honor, Muggs rounds up the gang to play the parts, including Glimpy (Huntz Hall) as his little sister Annabelle.
The story is very funny and well done. The gang's slang really makes for some great jokes, and as always Gorcey and Hall shine. Gorcey is able to bring plenty of laughs by being completely serious, and Hall's goofyness is inevitably funny.
EAST SIDERS BACK UP MUGGS........2005-05-27
During the course of the second manifestation for Leo Gorcey's mini-mob players, the East Side Kids, who followed the Dead End Kids, while preceding the Bowery Boys, producer Sam Katzman hired veteran director William Beaudine for the East Side series due to his established success at leading movie youngsters and this quite effective Monogram release is the initial effort with Beaudine at the helm. The mother of young Muggs McGinnis (Gorcey) shares with him a letter received from his late father's close friend, "Uncle" Pete, a wealthy Texan, in which he Pete tells of an impending visit by him and his daughter Judy to the McGinnis home in New York where the rancher expects to meet for the first time the five brothers and the sister Annabelle of Muggs, non-existent siblings invented by the widow McGinnis in order to receive Pete's financial support over many years. Muggs conscripts his East Side roustabout cohorts as his family, with Glimpy (Huntz Hall) dressed as Annabelle, and when Uncle Pete and Judy arrive in New York, confused jollity ensues, until a local thug plots to expose the impersonation as a means of obtaining some of Pete's wealth for himself. The film, produced with a virtually non-existent budget, has a virtually non-existent script, as well, with ad libbing contributed by most of the cast, notably Gorcey with his rather fascinating employment of malapropisms, all of which is very compatible to Beaudine's loose-reined directoral mode. His relaxed methods must also take responsibility for some ragged performing, and there is need for more efficient editing, but this comedic affair eschews the wonted wartime jingoism that marks the series, and Hall is enormously and unexpectedly hilarious in his gender bending role, joining the other members of the cast in patent enjoyment of playing in this entry. The DVD version offers no special features.
Series fans, add 1 *.Huntz Hall in drag is worth price alone.......2003-12-30
The East Side Kids series took a definite turn for the better when director William Beaudine joined it in 1943. CLANCY STREET BOYS is Beaudine's first, and also the first East Side escapade to be played strictly for laughs. To impress his father's old friend from Texas, Leo Gorcey has to pass off his rowdy pals as his siblings (including Huntz Hall in lipstick as sister "Annabelle," and African-American Ernie Morrison as a stepbrother!). Noah Beery and Lita Ward (the future Mrs. Gorcey) are enjoyable as Gorcey's fresh-from-Texas visitors, and Rick Vallin is personable as the heavy. (Vallin became one of producer Sam Katzman's favorite actors.) This was filmed on Katzman's usual how-low-can-we-go budget, which results in frequent ad libs and a relaxed atmosphere. An hour of fun for comedy fans, and series fans will really enjoy it. The print was frequently cut and recut by TV stations, so there are splices at scene changes. Except for a few momentary digital glitches, the image is surprisingly sharp and clear.
Antics galore!.......2001-08-07
If you grew up watching the East Side Kids/Bowery Boys, you'll love this film. Muggs and the gang are always at their hysterical best. It's just as much fun to watch them now at age 51 than when I was 10. This is a keeper!
