1 out of 5 stars what a disappointment.......2007-05-31

I had an America concert from SoundStage on PBS saved on my DVR box, but when it broke down, I had to turn it in, concert included. When I saw this DVD, I immediately bought it, as I've always loved this band. The sound is absolutely horrible. You can't even listen to it @ 5.1. I'm not sure who mixed this thing, but I think they were actually deaf. The concert itself is good, but I was really hoping for something better than I had recorded off of regular TV. Save your money.

5 out of 5 stars Like fine wine, America just gets better; this DVD is a MUST!.......2007-05-26

I bought this DVD as a Christmas present to myself after seeing them on
"Soundstage". This is a musical concert masterpiece. If you haven't seen
America or heard them since the 70s, you are in for a special treat. They
sound BETTER than the records, after almost 35+ years. The sound and the
camera work is perfect. America is the epitome of professionalism. If any
budding musicians want to see a tight, rehearsed, seasoned band playing
great classic songs, this is the one DVD concert to own. Everything about
this concert is just flawless, from beginning to end. You forget just how
many hits they had and how they crafted all those unique songs. No other
group from that era or NOW even comes close. The musicianship by the band
is awesome, especially Michael Woods and longtime drummer Willie Leacox.
You will be knocked out by the overall performance and quality. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars America in Concert: Live at the Sydney Opera house.......2007-05-07

This was a live concert footage and it is very good. Anyone who is a America fan will love this. Live music and small talk in between songs makes this a must have. I give it 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent, In-Depth Look at a Queen Masterpiece (4.5 stars).......2006-11-08

In 1975, Queen were a band on the rise. They just had a hit single with "Killer Queen" off the "Sheer Heart Attack" and were set to release their 4th studio album. "A Night at the Opera" marked Queen's breakthrough, which spawned 2 hit singles, one of them being one of the most popular singles of all time. This song of course was "Bohemian Rhapsody", Freddie Mercury's epic, 6 minute long operatic force. John Deacon also contributed a delightful pop hit with "You're My Best Friend." It wasn't just these two singles that made this album so classic though.

Brian May and Roger Taylor give excellent, detailed descriptions of the work that went into recording and writing many of the songs off the album. "Death on Two Legs" was Freddie's heavy opener, and the DVD takes an excellent excerpt of a Mercury interview where he describes the idea behind the song. Brian May goes through his song structures and writing techniques for "The Prophet's Song", "'39", "Good Company" and "Sweet Lady." Roger Taylor explains the drum-work for "I'm in Love With My Car." However, John Deacon doesn't participate in any interviews, and Roger and Brian discuss how he wishes to live the "quiet life." If you are a Queen fan, this is great footage of the band members detailing the work done on these songs, and along with in-depth analysis and summaries of every song on the album, there are extras. Included is a live version of "Sweet Lady" at Hyde Park, Brian May's performance of "'39" and "Love of My Life", performed by Freddie and Brian.

This a worthwhile DVD if you are a Queen fan who loves this particular album, and are interested in how it was composed so brilliantly. Highly recommended to all fans of Queen.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Companion for any Queen CD Collection.......2006-11-05

I'm a big fan of the 'Classic Albums' DVD series. As a fan, I'd rather see and hear about my favorite musicians' triumphs rather than their personal failures (ala' "Behind the Music"). If you're a fan of the group being profiled, you're going to enjoy the behind-the-scenes look at the making of their best-known album. I'm a Queen fan, and I thoroughly enjoyed this video.

There's a lot of archival footage of Queen's mid-70s stage act (though not of the footage shows the band in the studio actually recording their music). Brand-new interviews with both Brian May and Roger Taylor comprise the bulk of this DVD's running time. Brian and Roger are as soft-spoken and thoughtful as always and I've always appreciated their dry sense of humor. Roy Thomas Baker, the album's producer, also appears sporadically as do a handful of executves who were in power at Elektra Records when Queen were under contract there. (Elektra were Queen's American distributors at one time; I am surprised no one from EMI was interviewed as this was Queen's British label). There are some rock journalists and British DJs. A variety of minor rock celebrities (Nuno Bettencourt, Joe Perry) pop in but provide very little. Freddie Mercury, of course, only appears in grainy vintage TV interviews from the early 1980s. John Deacon apparently is letting his bass work speak for itself as he declined requests to be interviewed for this project.

There are many, many highlights to both Brian's and Roger's interviews. Brian, in particular, gently reminds us that although 'A Night at the Opera' was considered Queen's breakthrough album, it really exists in a continuity of musical styles and techniques going back to Queen's first album. Brian plays us excerpts of 'March of the Black Queen' and 'Procession' to bring the point home. It's always a delight to see Brian play his Red Special guitar (or an Ovation) to make a musical point, and Brian freely credits Freddie Mercury for authoring some of Queen's heaviest riffs. It's also a treat to hear Brian's solo acoustic takes on both '39' and 'Love of my Life.' Roger shares a wonderful story in which Groucho Marx gave his blessing to Queen's appropriation of the Marx Brothers' film title to their album, and its an anecdote that isn't often retold.

There are also a series of 'extras' which were apparently cut from the TV Special version of this DVD. For what it's worth, I would have prefered if these sequences were simply re-edited into the continuity of the video. Still, they are great to have and the DVD is stronger for their inclusion.

If you're a Queen fan (especially of the 1970s material), you'll definitely want to own this DVD. While Queen experts may already know most or all of the stories included here, it's a great tribute to one of rock music's most adventurous bands.

5 out of 5 stars A Cool Masterpiece!..........2006-10-02

It was really a pleasure to see this DVD and realise the renewed personalities of drummer Roger Taylor and guitarist Brian May. If you remember after that Freddie passed away (RIP), they were really in a dark, gloomy mood. I don't remember their tranquility and peace of mind in an interview, since all happened, 6 years ago.
This DVD really is illustrative with an extensive analysis of the recording process song by song with Roy Thomas Baker and Brian May (I don't know if it had would been better to add the comments of Roy Thomas Baker about the making of "Bohemian Rhapsody" that appear in "THE MAGIC YEARS" vol. I), special Roger's drum demostration (almost a clinic!... If you aren't a drummer, with these tips you can understand better the Roger Taylor style), with good introspective interviews (and the reason of the John Deacon's disappearing of the musical scene), with people that lived the bankrup of the band in '74, and finally, the making of an extraordinary masterpiece: the A NIGHT AT THE OPERA album. It's interesting see the live footage and performances between one and another interview, and a good example of this is the live track "SWEET LADY" from the DVD LIVE AT THE HYDE PARK, '76... Good Luck!

3 out of 5 stars very weak audio.......2006-09-07

I think their original intention was to give you an insight to the behind the scenes making of the album...what you end up with is a very light overview of what happened. Lacking the presence of Freddie and John Deacon...most of what you're hearing and seeing are assumptions and opinions of half a band. They really aren't sharing any secret studio tricks with you that hadn't been made available at earlier dates.

I agree with the other reviewer who commented....since when are Joe Perry...Nuno Bettencord and Ian Hunter considered Queen experts.....at least Ian was playing the same local London bar circuit back in the pre-fame days as Queen were..and was classified as "glam rock"..so they climbed up from the same streets.

I wasn't very pleased with the audio.....very weak output.

My bottom line opinion is: The remainer of Queen are just cashing in on anything they can use to generate more income. This video is just a trip down memory lane with some of the people involved in the making of a great album. Just as they are doing by touring with Paul Rodgers and billing themselves as Queen and Paul Rodgers....They need to come up with a new name to represent their project...Queen died when Freddie did....and John Deacon pretty much made his mind known when he refused to be a part of any further musical projects. Sometimes you need to let go and move on.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it.......2006-05-13

This is a great DVD. For me, the original album gets only 4 stars. While brilliant, it has a couple of uninteresting tracks (Good Company, Sweet Lady and God Save The Queen). The rest though, Rocks!!!
The Making Of DVD is incredible. So interesting, I love hearing Brian and Roger talk. Watching them play is worth the price of the DVD alone.
I always thought '39 was about the Second World War. Silly me.
For me, I would love to hear the original 9 minute version of Bo Rhap and hoped it would be on here. It isn't which is a shame. Perhaps one day it will surface.
My version has the DVD of Night At The Opera (released on its own a couple of years ago) included, the 5.1 surround sounds amazing.
Hopefully they do A Day At The Races next as that is my favourite Queen and All Time album.

ROYAL OPERA HOUSE-THE LIVE DVD SERIES (BJORK)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Mad-Pixie Musical Genius of Bjork!.......2006-01-24

This concert gets better -- impossibly better, more beautiful and interesting -- with repeated watchings, and it takes repeated watchings to capture both the gestalt and the little details that make this such a phenomenal and interesting performance.

Bjork is a maverick. She is defiantly self-defined, listening to no one's idea of who she ought to be or what she ought to sound like, and as a result she's created an entirely new paradigm of what a modern day performer can do and be and become. How she ever ended up on the 2006 slate of Brit Award nominees alongside Kelly Clarkson, Madonna and Mariah Carey is a wonder -- but she leaves those ladies in the dust. They are all cut from roughly the same cloth, but Bjork -- a true artist, not just a performer mimicking tried and true ideas of what will sell records and play well in videos -- is defiantly and out-loud an original.

Her ebullient, expansive, joyful, expressive and extraordinary voice threads through this set of songs like a shooting star, leaving a comet tail of magic in its wake. She is like a child on the stage, moving instinctly in time with the beat of her own music, the ticking of her own particular heart and brain and mind. The music is sometimes so unearthly it may well be built on a tonal scale from another planet -- or from heaven itself -- but drop your expectations of what music "should" sound like and this oceanic performance will effervesce in your head like a sublime, simmering broth of seltzer and starlight.

Fizz, fizz, fizz ... wonderful. What a relief it is from the ordinary!

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2005-12-22

I tend to write reviews with a lot more length but there is not much to be said about this DVD of Bjork's live performace in London. It is my favorite music DVD I own and I have watched it again and again with my eyes glued to the TV. All I can say is WOW. If you're a Bjork fan, there is no possible way you can be dissapointed by this DVD. Its is pure sonic musical energy with a feast for the eyes. The set is very long and the extras introduce to you the making of Vespertine and the performers on the tour with interviews. I love this! WOW!

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable experience..........2005-07-12

This is one of the many DVD's that have been released recently covering the different performances Bjork has had for every one of her albums. Among those this beautiful piece of music can be found. As a part of the `Vespertine' tour Bjork performed at the Royal Opera house. Accompanying Bjork we have Matmos performing the beats, Simon Lee with the orchestra, Zeena Parkins in the harp and `Inuit choir' (a choir specially formed for this tour)

The concert opens with two instrumental pieces, the first one is `Frosti', from the very beginning we get to see that the show we are about to witness will be breathtaking not only musically but visually, the first image of Bjork sitting and playing with the music box is unbelievable and full of beauty. Then we have `Overture' from the film `Dancer in the dark' to open and lead to the first of 17 pieces of the DVD performed by the swan princess.

Following up the idea of `Vespertine' it is not a surprise to see the musicians performing with cards, beats and noises made on the floor among some others. The intimacy of the album can be felt in this live performance.

Many of her classic are here, `All is full of love', `Hidden place', `Unison', `Possibly maybe', `Hyperballad', `Human Behaviour' and `Joga'. All of them performed live with a superb sound quality, most of the songs presented are calm themes such as `Cocoon' and the previously mentioned, it seems as if she had chosen the songs from her previous albums that could fit in the concept of `Vespertine', the results of the selection is one of the best concert she has given ever.

The arrangements made for this concert are awesome and the 5.1 mix does justice to the performance of the artists involved. The musicians, the choir and the artist all together make of this concert an unbelievable experience. The quality of the image is fair enough (it could have been better) and presented on widescreen format. Even though the extras are nothing special, the concert by itself is more than enough reason to have this item among anyone's music collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Gorgeous, Beautiful And Lush Concert.......2005-05-08

As a huge Bjork fan, I am determined to buy as much material by her as I possibly can. I've bought pretty much all her albums, so the next step is to move onto the many DVD's she has released. I bought "Volumen II" around six weeks ago on the same day that I bought "Bjork: Live At The Royal Opera House." This concert DVD focuses on Bjork's 2001 Vespertine Tour, and it is absolutely beautiful. Vespertine is easily my favourite Bjork album, so to have a live concert of it with many other songs is such a special gift. Bjork wanted to tour this tour in opera houses throughout the world instead of arenas, because the music being performed in this tour is very much intimate and gentle, and not really meant for large areas.

On this tour Bjork enlisted the help of many great musicians to play her music. These include the brilliant American harpist Zeena Parkins, British orchestra conductor Simon Lee, the female Inuit Choir from Greenland and the crazy duo Drew Daniel and Martin Schmidt aka Matmos. This collection of musicians take the original framework of Bjork's music from Vespertine and alter it ever so slightly for a concert format. When sung live, things are more open and intricate, like you can hear everything that was meant to be on the original songs. Bjork's voice is incredible throughout this concert, and it works beautifully as a relaxing instrument on its own.

The concert opens with "Frosti," which is a short music box introduction to the concert. The curtains open and Bjork works the music box so gently. She wears a gorgeous white dress and fabulous white boots to match the mood of the music. This is then followed by "Overture" from Selmasongs, which is a beautiful orchestral piece, conducted by Simon Lee. "All Is Full Of Love" is the first song in which Bjork sings in this concert, and it is a great performance. Matmos really maximise their talent and improve the beat on the original video remix. "Aurora" is an amazing song in itself, and to hear it here live is such a beautiful experience. Zeena on the harp is particularly brilliant, and this works very well with Bjork's vocals, which are sharp and cutting on this song. "Undo" is one of the most beautiful performances on this tour, because it opens so gently and subtly. I love this song and the final minute is so beautiful. All the instruments are reduced so Bjork's voice can stand on its own. "Generous Palmstroke" is the beautiful song in which Bjork and Zeena join forces to make their little duet. The harp is most prominent on this song than any other in the tour, and Bjork's vocals are strong as ever.

"An Echo, A Stain" is easily one of my favourite Bjork songs ever. I just love the album version of this song, but the concert version wasn't a favourite of mine. What I like most about this song is how quiet and relaxing it is, and this live version is harder and more defined because of the electronics Matmos use. I have, however, grown to love this version because everything is broken down and picked apart, especially towards the climax of the song. "Hidden Place" is another one of my favourite Bjork songs, and this live version is great. The choir are strong on this song, as are Matmos who shuffle a pack of cards into the microphone, showing their creative talents! "Cocoon" is one of the most intimate songs I've ever heard in my life, and this live version is amazing. Bjork's voice is so beautiful here, especially as she sings, "A train of pearls!" The choir isn't needed on this song because it's just Bjork and nothing else. "Unison" closed the Vespertine album, and it closes the first half of this concert. Matmos use some interesting sounds on this live version which is much different to the original. A great finale to this softer half of the concert.

After a short break, Bjork returns with a costume change into a large red dress looking stunning as usual. "Harm Of Will" opens the second half of the concert, which is another great performance. This is not much different to the album version but this doesn't matter because it's such a perfect song, why would you want to mess with the formula? "It's Not Up To You" is an amazing song because of the choir, and they play a big part in this live version as well. "Pagan Poetry" is a great live performance because Matmos use their electronics to the full. Bjork's vocals are strong as well, working in harmony with the choir and the harp. "Possibly Maybe" is reworked using Matmos and their creative flair. This song is one of the oldest from the tour, and it's nice to see Bjork go back to those mid-Nineties days. This live version is slowed down more than the original to fit in with the Vespertine theme of the tour.

"Isobel" is an epic, beautiful piece that is broken down so that all the individual piece of what make this song so great can be heard. The violins from the orchestra work amazingly well here and the song is drawn out to around seven minutes long. "Hyperballad" is a stunning song and the introduction to it is very beautiful because there's a sense of anticipation created for what is to come. "Human Behaviour" is probably the most upbeat song on this tour and one of the very few where Bjork actually dances! It's nice to add some upbeat material towards the end of the concert, and this being one of Bjork's most popular songs receives a glowing reception from the audience. "Joga" is slowed down to emphasise Bjork's gorgeous voice. The orchestra is very dark and ominous creating a spooky feeling. At the end of the song Bjork introduces her musicians to the audience, and they receive a rapturous response. The concert closes with the amazing "It's In Our Hands," which is an amazing live version that I prefer over the original. The clapping after the first chorus is great, and the loud revving noises that remind me of an aeroplane taking off is very powerful! A great closing to such a stunning concert.

OVERALL GRADE: 10/10

Every single song on this DVD is amazing because the level of quality is so high and consistent throughout. You can tell that Bjork spent a long time thinking about this tour, and because of this it is definitely her best tour to date. I would love to see her live at some point in my life, because it would be a dream come true. This DVD also features a great interview section from Bjork herself, Matmos, Zeena, and the choir. It's very interesting to watch these interviews about how the tour came about, and also the making of the album. Bjork is a beautiful creature and her music is stellar to anything I've ever heard. This DVD is essential for all Bjork fans, because you find something new every time you watch it.

5 out of 5 stars Cute and enchanting with unbelievable vocal talent. .......2005-03-10

Sound quality is very well recorded for not being DTS. Bjork has always been a little strange to me but her extreme vocal capabilties keeps me admiring her music. Her music and vocal talent truly shows in this concert DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Worth buying.......2006-07-27

This DVD is essentially a recording of their stage show. That said, it is well put together and nicely uses the audience to give a real concert feel to the recording.
Even if you have never seen Amici Forever, it is good entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars I can't praise this DVD enough!.......2006-07-23

I was blown away by Amici Forever! Five gifted vocalists come together to create the first "opera band." These young performers can help make opera/classical singing accessible to a pop music-inundated world. (Don't get me wrong, I love rock and pop, but this singing style is so beautiful, that I hope performers like Amici Forever can garner opera a wider audience.)

The vocals were great. The solos, the harmonies, the vocal blend...it all came together. The singers had extraordinary stage presence: their movements were marked with grace as they performed simple choreography while singing.

The orchestra and background dancers all looked extremely young, complementing the youthful (late 20s, early 30s) opera band. My only complaint against this DVD is that I wanted more material on the special features. I would have liked interviews, more behind-the-concert footage, etc.

Oh, as an aside, David Habbin--what a hottie, eye (& ear) candy for the female audience. And Nick Garrett's bass baritone could woo any woman.

Great!!!!! Quality of voices was fantastic. The soprano, mezzo, tenor, and baritone blend well together.

I have no regrets about the purchase of this dvd and highly recommend anyone buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2006-03-02

I just happened to see this group listed when buying some Il Divo CDs, and boy, am I happy I did. If you like both pop music and opera, these guys will blow you away. They all have beautiful voices, the arrangements are first-class, and even the choreography has been taken care of, they don't just stand there and sing. On top of that, they are all very good-looking, not that that has anything to do with their talent, but it sure makes for a feast for the eyes also. I bought the DVD, which I've been playing almost daily since I got it, and plan on buying all of their CDs now. Hope they come to the US soon, will be there to cheer them in person. Go ahead, buy this DVD, you won't be disappointed. Great voices, great music, gorgeous-looking performers, how can you go wrong?

4 out of 5 stars Amici Forever.......2006-02-26

Very good. They are helping younger people and those who may not
already appreciate opera to do so. Talented people.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Miss This One!.......2007-06-27

I absolutely loved the scenery, the dancing. The DVD was full of pagentry, and history, and of course Helmut Lotti's voice, singing in various languages, was marvelous.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-03-09

I heard this dvd on Public Radio when they were having a drive to raise funds. I could not wait to purchase it. The songs they picked were well chosen. All but one. And Lotti's voice was outstanding. I have been to Russia several times and this DVD sent me back in time. It is one of my favorite DVD's and I listen to it often. And on my 60' Sony........dam its like being there.

GREAT CD, LOTTI SINGS THESE SONGS LIKE A TRUE COSSACK.SPASIBO KHARASHO

4 out of 5 stars Lotti Loves Russia.......2007-01-08

"From Russia With Love" is Helmut Lotti's 4th PBS special, and finds him taking the Trans Siberian Express with musical virtuoso Andrej Kotov, as they view the magnificent vistas of this "Country of Superlatives" from the "so rough, so wild, so barren" Siberia to the final sequence in Moscow's Red Square, where the Belgian singing star, along with the Russian Air Force chorus sings the Russian National Anthem. Other songs include "From Russia With Love," which is not the John Barry film theme, but one composed by Lotti, "Dream Away," which many will remember as "Stranger in Paradise," but is actually based on the original "Prince Igor" theme by Borodin, and my favorite of the songs, "Those Were the Days."

The rest of the 18 track list includes: "Lara's Theme," "Vetscherni Zvon," "Far East of the Sun," "Ej Ukhnem," "Kalinka," "Two Guitars," "The Legend of the 12 Robbers," "Hold Me Once More," "Dorogoj Dlinnoju," "Lutshje Bulo," "Moscow Nights," "Poljushko Polje," and "Otschi Tschornije."

Lotti's rich, beautiful voice, which has a phenomenal range, is well suited for this material, and he sings the songs in both Russian and English. Born in 1969, Lotti still looks incredibly youthful, and untouched by the world, though his multi platinum album sales have led to a career that has taken him to the far corners of this planet, to the delight of his many fans, and those who enjoy Russian music will definitely like this DVD scenic concert.

5 out of 5 stars Kharasho - Great!.......2005-10-09

This DVD was great! The scenery was most beautiful and of course, Helmut's singing only enhanced that beauty. For those who do not understand Russian, there are subtitles in 4 languages. It was delightful to listen to the old traditional folk songs as well as some newer ones. One has become my favorite, Lutshje Bulo. I may wear out the DVD player repeating it again and again. Also interesting was learning Helmut sang the songs phonetically, as he doesn't speak the language. Sure could have fooled me! His accent was right on the money and his arrangements were outstanding. I think you'll be very happy with this DVD. I know I was. As a newbie to Helmut Lotti, I plan to get more of his music CDs and DVDs. If they are all as good as this piece is, I'm sure I'll be delighted.

2 out of 5 stars The Ten Tenors - Larger Than Life.......2006-03-03

Saw these gentlemen on the Tony Danza Show (TV) for the first time. They sang a medly of 50s songs and I enjoyed them very much. They advertised this CD as the one with the 50s songs so I ordered it. Disappointedly I received a cd with all classical music and was very disappointed, and you can't return CDs, so I rated it as a 2 since I do not enjoy classical music.

5 out of 5 stars The Ten Tenors - Larger Than Life DVD - WOW.......2006-02-25

This is one of the best Opera DVDs I have ever watched. These guys are fantastic! Even if you aren't a huge fan of opera, it's worth watching this DVD. They make opera fun! To quote from the DVD "the best of opera without all the boring bits!"

1 out of 5 stars Boring! Bummer!.......2005-09-10

Bought this for my wife, a true opera lover. We ended up fast-forwarding through most of the last half. Very boring! Mediocre talent. Don't waste your time or money. This once viewed DVD is now destined to sit on the shelf forever.

1 out of 5 stars Disaster...........2005-09-10

Fell victim to previous ratings...so cheap including the musical accompany...find it..so unnatural with these...singers singing MOST of the songs or arias... JUST the same it was a good thing to come out of Australia !! WOW.i just finnish watching the MO tenors..WHAT a great differance..!!

5 out of 5 stars I must see these men in live performance.......2005-05-17

This is full, rich, rounded musical sound of mature and trained voices performing in range from hauntingly lyrical to full throated vigorous drama. And here, among all excellent pieces, is the best Waltzing Matilda I've ever heard! The performers are talented, likable and inventive, and their enjoyment in their music is infectious. I am so glad to have found this group. I'll have to travel quite a ways to catch them live, but that is an audience I MUST take part in.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC TOUR DE FORCE.......2006-04-08

This is an incredible, powerful and dramatic singer, to be able to pull off two such opposite roles, one a light comedy, the other a tragedy, the first a coloratura soprano part, the second
a dramatic soprano. Carole Farley is also a great actor, communicating every emotion while performing like an angel.
Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Some secrets are better kept.......2007-02-23

There is no excuse for this beyond trying to capitalize on the then-waning success of a formerly (briefly) novel sounding voice. While he found success with his forceful, bluesy vocal production in the pop/R&B genre during the earlier part of the last decade, he should have never taken this step. The raspy, strained sounds issuing forth from Mr. Bolton's throat were, by the time of original recording, already beginning to grate on American housewives' nerves. Calling upon such paltry resources borders on the blasphemous in this material. An aria by aria critique would be pointless and would be plain mean. Suffice to say: 'Nessun Dorma'? Maybe not, but a good long nap is definitely the desired alternative to staying awake through this embarrassing display.

5 out of 5 stars Great perfomance for a versatile singer.......2007-02-22

It includes a comment by Michael Bolton on the story behind every aria and in my opinion his peculiar voice sounds 'fresh' in this kind of music. If you like this music, I would also recommend you the cd called 'Christmas in Vienna', which feautures M.Bolton,Plácido Domingo and Yin Huang. Make sure your dvd player can play ZONE 1 dvd's.

4 out of 5 stars Magic Flute among Roman ruins.......2006-06-22

This production was filmed in a Roman quarry at the Opera Festival St. Margarethen in Austria. It is quite a sight to watch performers romping around in the ruins, sometimes scaling (or, in the case of Papagena, jumping from) rocks that are several stories high. I gasped a couple of times. The production was made with children in mind and so is edited down to 90 minutes. It's not for purists, but the singing is spirited and it's staged with spectacular special effects, starting right out with a huge fire-breathing dragon. I loved it and think children would be enchanted.

Two cautions though: There are no subtitles, and the DVD case says "Interviews, Making of, Synopsis in 6 languages," but I could find none of these.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo!.......2006-03-09

I bought this DVD for just a few bucks, not expecting much. I am fairly new to opera and I guess the names on this DVD are not big enough to command a big price?

This is a wonderful outdoor performance with loads of special effects in Europe's largest outdoor theater!

Well worth the money!
