An excellant suspense film which hops from several amusement parks across the country.This film is a good film to watch when there is nothing on cable.

Good 70's Thriller.......2007-03-08

For me, the best thing about this movie is that it was filmed at actual amusement parks - one which no longer exists, and the climatic sequence at Kings Dominion. For those who went to the park back in the 1970's, they'll appreciate what the park was like back then - which was a fun amusement park that had all the characters kids loved back then...Scooby, Flinstones, Yogi, Huckleberry Hound, Jetsons, Quick Draw, and just a very big Hana Barbara theme. Though there are more "thrill" rides there today, there is less magic. Scooby Doo is the only carryover.

Aside form this, it's a decent film. Actually the best of all the 70's disaster films, but will seem dated for younger viewers. But definitely worth viewing if you went to the Parks back then, or are interested in seeing what the parks use to be like.

An extra star for the band............2007-02-20

There is a problem with looking at something years later - a generation raised on cutting edge SFX may find earlier efforts quaint at best, hokey at worst. Just remember - this surround sound film was the cutting edge for its day. The rollercoaster wipeout in Final Destination 3 is much better. And it should be.

This is a very good film. Helen Hunt in her 1st role. Good coasters. And, oh yes, the review title....this is a 4 star film, but as a serious fan of the extremely underrated band Sparks I give it an extra star for including them. They are shown performing at the climax of the film at (No, it wasn't Six Flags at this point.) Magic Mountain.

Put it in, grab the popcorn, enjoy. ; )

The amusement park version of "Jaws".......2006-12-26

Back in the summer of 1977, the movie "Rollercoaster" made you fear riding a rollercoaster, the same way "Jaws" made you fear the ocean. An extortionist/terrorist played by Timothy Bottoms had an idea to extort one million dollars from the owners of several amusement parks across America, under the threat of sabotaging the parks. SPOILERS: Unfortunately, to prove he means business, the film opens with a graphic rollercoaster crash where several people are killed. Amusement park safety inspector Harry Caulder (George Segal) investigates the crash. A while later, the extortionist contacts the park owners and lays out his demands. FBI agent Hoyt (Richard Widmark) is called in. Caulder and Hoyt join forces and play a cat and mouse game with the extortionist, as they go through the motions of cooperating with the extortionist's demands, which takes them to another amusement park for the money drop-off, where the extortionist is ultimately double-crossed. Ticked off, the extortionist breaks off negotiations and says he's going to sabotage another park. Caulder and Hoyt predict the extortionist will strike the new (at the time) Revolution metal looping-coaster at Magic Mountain near Los Angeles, during the coaster's July 4th grand opening. They go there to try to catch the extortionist before he does any more harm, leading to a very suspenseful climax. The whole film is very suspenseful, as this is only a very general breakdown of the movie.

The picture on the DVD is very bright and clear, almost making the movie look like it was made yesterday, in terms of picture quality. Highly recommended DVD for fans of the 70s disaster-film genre. Hollywood, please leave this movie alone, it doesn't need a remake.

One of the more memorable disaster films!.......2006-07-28

Some disaster films are good, some are not. The Poseidon Adventure was one of the most popular in the 70's when these types of films began to take off. Rollercoaster always remained a favorite of mine. Released in 1977, it's basically about a terrorist who after sabatoging a roller coaster at a popular amusement park, begins to blackmail the authorities with more bomb threats if they don't give him what he wants. What exactly does he want? Well, money of course, lots of it. This was a fun little thrill-ride and is definitely worth a few peaks! It also stars a pre-teen Helen Hunt. I do not own the DVD yet, but I'm sure Universal has made it look even better than the VHS version.

Description

Five troubled teenagers choose a bankrupt amusement park to pursue a dark fantasy. Fueled by booze, drugs and unspoken tensions between them, the friends wander aimlessly through the silent midway in search of a notorious teen-friendly security guard. The Guard reluctantly allows them to stay, but demands a very private fee from one of them. The angst-ridden youths take revenge on the guard and lock him in one of the rides. They turn on the power and the silent park soon comes to brilliant life with glaring lights, loud music and the furious motion of the attractions. Their gaiety and joy are short-lived, however. In their midst a darker purpose lurks: a suicide pact confronts them with a choice between death and their tortured lives. Each path holds its terrors. Whatever the choice, their lives will bear the mark forever.

A depressing movie.......2005-10-06

In an altered state of mind, is the only way to understand this movie, and then when you do, its so sad, and you cry for days. Puts you in a depressing state.

The movie is about some girl and her boyfriend wanting to commit a mass suicide because she didnt want to bring her baby into this world . . . so they go to the old amusement park

Now your problay wondering why i put 1 star on their
and the put "THIS MOVIE SUCKS".Well that's because
it has only 1 good scene in their that's when that kid
with the spikey red hair gets his revenge on the pedofile
security guard.This movie really has no plot,no story
they really don't tell what are the story behind these
5 troubled teenagers.And i think whoever made this movie
needs to go back to college because he has no idea how to make
a film in my opinon.And i would only reccomend this movie
to (...),lesbians,pedofiles,troubled teens,adults
or canadians

Good concept, good acting but, poor film........2003-10-24

This film could have been so much more than what it was. Though the acting was surprisingly good, it was way too slow for my tastes. The acting is why this movie got a 3 and not a 1...glad I rented instead of buying it.

Major props to the young actors.
