Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones star as Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call, aging cowboys and former Texas rangers and who organize a 2,500 mile cattle drive for one last great adventure in this excellent 1989 miniseries adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel. The best friends, who steal the herd from a gang of Mexican cattle rustlers, drive their herd from Texas to Montana, battling horse thieves, angry Indian tribes, and a renegade half-breed killer named Blue Duck (Frederic Forrest) on a mission of revenge. The excellent cast also includes Robert Urich as cardsharp and former Ranger Jake Spoon, Anjelica Huston as McCrae's old flame Clara Allen, Danny Glover, Ricky Schroder, Diane Lane, Chris Cooper, D.B. Sweeney, Steve Buscemi, and even a small role for author Larry McMurtry. Australian director Simon Wincer shows a tremendous capacity for balancing sweeping drama and intimacy against the gorgeous landscape of the American Southwest, giving a grandly epic feel to the film despite its small-screen target and limited budget, and for forging memorable characters of even the smallest supporting parts. The heart of the drama belongs to McCrae and Call, memorably etched by Duvall and Jones as the last of the range romantics. In the age of revisionist Westerns, this excellent cattle-drive drama nicely maintains an old-fashioned feeling while still showing the dark side of the American West. Winner of seven Emmy Awards and responsible for two miniseries sequels (Return to Lonesome Dove and Dead Man's Walk) and a TV series. --Sean Axmaker

Lonesome Dove.......2007-06-08
This dvd starts off slow, but you get so attached to the characters. It is very authentic historically. You will laugh, cry, and think about the characters and story for a long time after viewing!!
The real deal........2007-05-15
This is the second time I had purchased this Title. The first one had anything but the original actors. This one is the real deal and the movie is excellent.
Great Drama & Storytelling leaves you begging for more.......2007-04-29
this is without a doubt the best Western ever, and for Western Lovers, there's more, the whole Lonesome Dove series is worth owning. I recommend reading the books also,.... more than once
Duval is an American treasure!.......2007-04-19
If I could have given this film 10 stars, I would have. This is an important film. Important in that every American should see it. The chemistry between Duval and Jones is superb. I watch the DVD about every six months or so. What can one say about Duval? His performance is the best he's ever done and puts him on my list of top five actors of all time. He's even said that this role was his finest. My only regret was that this was a TV mini series and not eligible for Oscar consideration. If it had been Duval would have walked off the stage with his second Best Actor statue. Please do not miss this.
one of the greatest westerns adapted from a great novel.......2007-04-10
luckily this screenplay was not scripted by the author himself like 'dead man's walk', so all the unnecessary non-stop yammering of gus from page one until he died was so smartly omitted that making this 'lonesome dove' movie one of the greatest westerns ever made into movie. wonderful cast, terrific performance by all the actors in it. great screenplay, wonderful and appropriate sound track lingering behind, floating up in time to deepen the feeling of every specific moment. duvall did a better-than-oscar-nomination performance, amazingly made that unforgettable character alive and became a larger-than-life image. tommy lee jones was also the best choice playing call's role. wonderful cinematography footage and settings, not one inch wasted or misplaced.

"The story of bluegrass is the story of Bill Monroe's musical legacy." So begins this superb 1991 documentary, which frames its historical survey around Monroe, the father of Kentucky bluegrass. As Monroe visits his old Kentucky home, now dilapidated and full of memories, the film traces the emergence of bluegrass from Appalachian descendants of Scotch-Irish settlers, and a variety of bluegrass greats (including narrator Mac Wiseman) offer informative anecdotes, accompanied by evocative archival footage and concert performances from the bluegrass festival circuit. Monroe's dominance is duly acknowledged, but ample time is devoted to his contemporaries and successors, including the fast-pickin' duo of Flat & Scruggs, the Osborne Brothers, Jimmy Martin, and finally Alison Krauss, who passionately defends the music's acoustic purity. The rise, fall, and consistent revival of bluegrass is thus chronicled through oral history and visual record, resulting in a priceless film that even casual fans are sure to enjoy. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
King of Bluegrass still reigns!.......2007-05-07
I'll admit that Jimmy Martin was a very crude, and sometimes obnoxious entertainer. However he left his mark on hundreds of tunes. There is no doubt it's Jimmy when you hear "Freeborn Man" or "Tennesee". He put together some of the best in Bluegrass Bands. Many of his band members moved on into prominent positions of their own.
This DVD will give you a glimpse of Jimmy's lifestyle. Beware of the Coon hunting scene, it's not for the faint of heart, or children.
As Jimmy would often say, "Git It, Git It, Git It!" This is a must have for those who appreciated "Jimmy"
universal appeal.......2007-03-02
You dont have to be a bluegrass fan to love this film, but you might end up one! Bill Monroe's life and music beautifully dominate a penetrating look at bluegrass music and the land that birthed it. Monroe's musicianship is astounding; his voice is like a lonesome wail, a tantalizing, gripping mix of pain and joy. He's an artist of immense stature, and High Lonesome does his legacy justice. This is a rowdy portrait of Appalachia and the hard South, salted with anecdotal contributions from people who live there, their music and stories of the artists who've succeeded in making a very persuasive art known and loved beyond a regional world. I gathered a bundle of heart from this film, and learned to love Monroe's music even more. One of the best moments is watching the grin wrap around Jimmy Dickens' face as he sings '20/20 vision, walkin' around blind...'. The film's chock full of nugget after nugget of pure music, resilient humanity, and an authentic film vision, all of it enriching to the max! High Lonesome delves into the importance of radio in its early days, and finishes with a blazing look at bluegrass festivals (lots of full performances are included!) and a number of current bluegrass performers, the unbeatable Allison Krauss among them. It's a film to watch again and again, one that stays true to its heart, and pulls you in for a memorable, at times haunting experience! Recommended enthusiastically - you wont be disappointed. And the music is stick-with-you SPECTACULAR!

Bluegrass Rule's.......2006-11-12
Fantastic performances and archive footage . The feel of why Bluegrass captures its enthusites is fully realized in this documenary !
a beautiful portrait of bluegrass music.......2006-11-11
The people who said this isn't a good history of bluegrass have a point; as a history, it's idiosyncratic and incomplete. On the other hand, as a portrait of the music and some of its creators it's unforgettable. I must have watched this movie 15 times over the past ten or eleven years, and it can still bring tears to my eyes.

Preserving a musical culture that has all but vanished from the hills of Appalachia, this compilation of films by musician-documentarian John Cohen offers a rich portrait of rural life in the early 1960s. Old practitioners of the "high lonesome" sound of bluegrass still retained the remote flavor of the region, so Cohen's films are now rare and cherished time capsules, beginning with "The High Lonesome Sound," an impressionistic portrait of Kentucky singer- guitarist Roscoe Holcomb and the hard-scrabble life that inspired his music. The second film, "The End of an Old Song," is a similarly moving portrait of balladeer Dillard Chandler, while "Sara and Maybelle" captures the reunion of two sisters from country music's pioneering Carter Family. Even though Cohen's verité methods are crude (resulting in minimal use of synchronized sound), his techniques are well suited to his subjects, qualifying these films as musical anthropology that will enthrall any student of music or rural American history. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
One out of three ain't.........too bad.......2004-01-14
After I read the other glowing reviews on here I had to own this video. HOWEVER, after watching the three shorts on bluegrass and life in the '60s, I was disappointed, overall. The first video of Mr. Holcomb and the eastern KY country life painted what you would expect of Appalachian folks....poorly clothed, poorly educated, great banjo and guitar pickers. Being from KY, we are a little touchy on the stereotypical overall-clad, cigarette-smoking portrayal of our people. There were some high spots on the first short, though. The playing of Mr. Holcomb on his front porch is quite impressive, the views of the landscape are fetching, and they do, in fact, make you want to come home to these Ky mountains. The second short, on Dillard Chandler, was a disappointment. The portions that show his dwelling and his solo interpretations of the mountain music without any instrumentation are impressive, but when we follow him into town to get a bite to eat and pursue women.....a little off topic and disturbing. What did those scenes have to do with his music? The third short, on the two Carters, Maybelle and Sara, was quite good. We get a nice history on the Carters and get to hear the girls pick and sing three or four tunes. This one was well-done and rather delightful, if you are into the history and the nostalgia of where some of this music came from. Overall, I give it two stars, primarily on the weakness of the second short.
sara and maybelle and maybelle and sara wow.......2002-09-18
This film is NOT ABOUT BLUEGRASS. The only injection of Bluegrass is the contrast between the lack of fame of the old time performers here and Bill Monroe's Bluegrass band playing down on the public square. These are films of pre Bluegrass performers, Particularly in the world of Dillard Chandler and Roscoe Holcomb, who were not commercial stars like Maybelle and Sara Carter, life was pretty hard. The main impact for Roscoe, a laid off partially disabled miner, when he got invited to perform for folk music festivals and concerts, was he got cut off the county relief that was his real support.
The big contrast here is between the gems these musicians still possess and the ingress of rock, rockabilly, country, and bluegrass sweeping aside the traditional music that they preserved. How many others were there like them off in these mountaisn in those days who weren't documented, filmed, recorded, and didn't get a chance to sing their songs to cameras, to microphones, and to new generations who wanted to hear these ancient tones.
This is a set of three films, one on Dillard Chandler, one on Roscoe Holcomb, and the last a reunion in Virginia of Maybelle and Sara Carter, two sisters in law and cousins as well who were the musical stars of the Original Carter Family. They are drawn together again after starting out in the late 20s with the late A.P. and separating when Sara went off to live in Northern California with her second husband.
They play 3 or 4 songs, and you hear more of their early work. You seem them relating together musically, personally. If you are into the history, the music the culture, even if it is only lately with the new books on the Carters or on Ralph Peer, this is interesing, real people real expression. What an intimate thing playing music is after decades. Shot in the early 1960s, you see the decade or two they had spent apart being covered over. You see delight, but also professionalism. They aren't back porch entertainers but folks who sold millions of records who ranged from New York City to Mexico perfoprming. In fact, both Maybelle and Sara were known as perfectionists in the studio.
In Maybelle's part this helped her become the person who really got Chet Atkins into the paying side of country music when she hired him. No one else but Maybelle understood and went along with Chester's desires to redo every take until it was gotten right, or to rerecord a 30 minutes radio program (the only way to do it before tape was available) because of one wrong note.
I was really thrilled to see Maybelle playing not just the regular Carter style, but doing The Cannon Ball, a Blues orinted finger picked tune that she still smoked.
This video is well worth about 10 times the price.
A Journey into the Past, into the future, music people wow.......2002-09-18
I've seen this about 5 times since it came out in the late 1960sd, all three viedos. I've even dined with the film maker and heard a couple of the people in it perform live.
BUY THIS, OWN THIS, PLAY THIS, REMEMBER THIS.
This is now 40 years old, and it shows old people hanging on to culture that would have died had it not been for the folk revival and people like John Cohen who made these films. There are actually three films here: one on Roscoe Holcomb the geat banjo, harmonica, and guitar player and singer, one on Dillard Chandler, a ballad singer, and one a reunion of the Maybelle and Sarah Carter. The films about Holcomb and Dillard splice in scenes of their real life working, not having work, of the hard times that hit the coal fields and the mountains in Kennedy's America.
It also speaks of a life probably gone, that some of us don't miss because of its miseries, but is part of our struggle. The log shack with newspapers on the wall, the white holy roller church scenes that remind me of haitian half-voodo, half Afro-Christians, playing music on the front porch while someone buck dances.
But the world is creeping in. The Roscoe's grandchild is trying to do the Chubby Checker's twist to Roscoe's banjo playing. Dillard tries to sing his balleds in a beer parlor but they want the Nashville Juke Box honky tonk, we do see Bill Monroe and the gang on the steps of the Hazard County city hall--and what did this have to do with the bloody strikes asnd union wars going on then!!!!!--preserving part of this.
However, this is not bluegrass, but prebluegrass, in Chandler's case really pre pre bluegrass, you see him and his peers singing songs that belong in the 14, 15, or 16 centuries.
This is real music performed in the real world by real people. Even if you don't like old time country music, this is worth the money for what it shows about a community and a world in struggle. Even if this is foreign to you, this is the real America many of our grandparents and great grand parents lived in. The struggle is where the music comes from. More on the Carters in a separate note.
best film i ever seen about the early developement of bluegr.......1999-06-25
I heard about this video in "bluegrass unlimited" where it was advertised. A friend brought it home from a visit to the states, and I borrowed it and kept it for ½ year. I saw it twice in 14 days and kept coming back for more wiewings. I knew that I had to have it. It is a must for everyone who loves bluegrass and old time music.

Not quite as severe in my judgment...........2006-08-21
HIGH LONESOME was Eagle-Lion's sequel to THE SUNDOWNERS (1950). While several cast members from the earlier film also appear in this one, most notably Chill Wills, the film lacks the "star-power" of a Robert Preston (or Robert Sterling). John Barrymore Jr. isn't as bad as some have written, but neither does he give the film that essential lift that it needs to be truly memorable. Still, for the price, and the fine camera work, and for Chill Wills (who always adds something), the film is worth investigating. Again, thanks to VCI gives us a handsome print..and we owe them thanks.
High at times and somewhat Loathsome........2006-06-10
If you like westerns, this movie has some moments. It was filmed in the Big Bend river country of Texas on the property of 6 working ranches. The technicolor photography is rich and scenic. There are some accomplished actors giving good performances as well some servicable ones by what must be genuine ranch hands based on their looks and riding ability. Unfortunately, the story is somewhat preposterous and it's main focus is on the character played (and I use that word in it's fullest sense) by the only Barrymore who couldn't act - John Drew Barrymore, father of his middle named daughter. Because of his famous lineage, J.D. bypassed the learning process of acting experience and jumped into lead roles like this one. Other than shouting out his lines, his entire range consists of contorted facial expressions to show suprise, fear and God knows what-all. The price of admission is almost worth the laughter it provokes. Because the producers or director couldn't have failed to notice how inept his acting was, most of his scenes take place with a squeaky voiced actress who deflects attention from him by being even more annoying. Also it must be noted that if music were medication then this movie is overmedicated. The soundtrack is shrill and overbearing, particularly in the beginning.
So what are the good points? Chill Wills gives the kind of appealing folksy performance before he became a cariacture and Basil Ruysdael as the father left me wanting to see more of him in something (anything) else. The film was directed and written by Alan LeMay who can be forgiven for this since his story was the source for Ford's "The Searchers". And there's the landscape spread out over 6 ranches, from arroyos to plains to riversides. As for John Drew Barrymore- well, he's got beautiful blue eyes and a great head of hair which as Mick Jagger once said is all you need to be a rock star. Not a film star.

Description
In a town ruled by racial prejudice, only a boy had the courage to take a stand. Oscar®-winner LOUIS GOSSETT, JR. (An Officer and a Gentleman) and JOSEPH MAZZELLO (Jurassic Park) head the cast of this compelling and intense drama. USA, the 1930s. Walter Osgood is the only black man left in the town of High Lonesome. He's lost almost everything dear to him, including his wife and son. But no one in High Lonesome will speak out to defend Walter's rights when the town unites to drive him away from the community. Except for one person - a young boy named Charlie. Not only does Walter's extraordinary friendship with Charlie teach the boy the true meaning of love and courage, but it is also a dramatic flashpoint which forces the townspeople to confront their own cruel prejudices.
Customer Reviews:
a subtle movie with Gosset and Mazzello.......2000-12-03
I just bought this movie after I had seen it on tv. So why buy it? Well I guess it was because of the actors delivering a good performance; Gossett jr. and Mazzello are a safe choice to get energy in the film. This movie tells the story of a small boy who has a hard time getting raised by a father who isn't to keen on black people, let's call him a racist. This reflects on the boy at first but after some dramatic moments he has the insight that blacks are people just like everybody else. The storyline is very thin, but Joseph Mazzello and Louis Gossett jr. lift the film to a good level. Mazzello is adoring in his sorrow and hope. Gossett is a kewl adult, who teaches a kid the basic elements of fatherly love. The film would do a great job on schools as an introduction to prejudice and biggotism. So I guess I can recommend this film to anyone who cares.
