Two peak achievements by as many top noir directors ... a customized vehicle for one of noir's premier icons ... an oddball experiment in making a truly "private eye" movie ... and a Howard Hughes remake of his earliest contribution to the gangster genre. Such are the five titles corralled for Warner Home Video's third box set of film noir classics.
For eye-popping dynamism coupled with ferocious intensity, no noir director matched Anthony Mann. Border Incident (1949) was Mann's and cinematographer John Alton's first film for MGM following a string of darkly dazzling low-budget beauties at Eagle-Lion (T-Men, Raw Deal, The Black Book, et al.). In structure it's virtually a remake of T-Men, transposed from the shadowy city where a Secret Service team battled counterfeiters, to California's Imperial Valley where the Immigration Service sets out to infiltrate a gang exploiting--and often murdering--Mexicans eager to work the farms. From the opening night scene of three laborers trying to recross the border and meeting a grisly end, the movie relentlessly imagines ways the human body can merge with the earth. Visually stunning, and replete with memorable villains (headed by Howard Da Silva, a past master at making affability lethal), this is one of Mann's strongest noirs and surely his most inventive. Its neglect can be explained only by people's assumption that nothing worthwhile could come of a movie top-billing Ricardo Montalban and George Murphy (as the government agents). Wrong, wrong, wrong.
After a scalding first reel in big-city night streets, Nicholas Ray's On Dangerous Ground (RKO, 1951) likewise forsakes familiar noir terrain for the countryside--the mountains and snowfields where city cop Robert Ryan seeks a psychotic killer. For both the actor and the director, Ryan's character is an exemplary creation: a man with personal demons whose overzealous pursuit of criminals has pushed him into sadism. His passage from urban darkness into the silent white mountain country becomes a redemptive journey, thanks largely to his interaction with a blind woman (Ida Lupino) in an isolated farmhouse whose younger brother may be the quarry he's after. Ray developed the screenplay with A.I. Bezzerides under the supervision of producer John Houseman (for whom Ray had made his feature debut, They Live By Night). The film boasts a thrilling music score by Bernard Herrmann, anticipating his great soundtrack for North by Northwest.
His Kind of Woman (also RKO, 1951) is a vehicle for both RKO's reigning bad boy, Robert Mitchum, and Howard Hughes' definitive coup of distaff engineering, Jane Russell. Their characters cross paths en route to a seaside Mexican resort, where she aims to continue her gold-digger pursuit of Hollywood ham Vincent Price, and Mitchum will figure in a plot to get deported mobster Raymond Burr back into the U.S.A. The slow-brewing romance between this dauntingly tall, broad-shouldered pair gives off little heat, but the players' good-natured, weary-pro rapport as they go through their mostly preposterous paces makes for very good fun. Still more is supplied by Price, who just about steals the movie when he gets to extend his sub-Errol Flynn screen heroism into real life--all the while supplying his own florid running commentary on the action. The urbane director John Farrow filled the movie with one delicious, what-the-hell-is-going-on-here scene after another (highlight: a bored Mitchum ironing his money), but that wasn't enough for studio boss Hughes. Richard Fleischer was brought in to stretch the climactic melodrama aboard Burr's yacht in the harbor, and the picture grew to an overblown two hours in length. Not that you're likely to regret a minute of it.
Robert Montgomery directed and played Phillip Marlowe in Lady in the Lake (MGM, 1947), Raymond Chandler's novel as adapted by Steve Fisher (I Wake Up Screaming). The gimmick is that, apart from a few scenes of private detective Marlowe chatting us up in his office, everything is viewed through his eyes, with Marlowe himself remaining unseen unless he glances in a mirror. This literal-minded conceit is more curious than compelling; the camera simply doesn't see the way the human eye does, and the artificiality constantly calls attention to itself. Montgomery, a suave actor who enjoyed playing it coarse and obnoxious on occasion, makes his screen Marlowe more smartass than any other ("dumb, brave, and cheap"). With him cracking wise off-camera, much of the movie is really carried by Audrey Totter, a swell late-'40s dame who has to stand up under more relentless scrutiny than even her shifty character deserves.
The Racket (RKO, 1951) is the second film version of a 1920s play about municipal corruption, gangsterism, and the attempt to squash an honest police precinct captain. John Cromwell had acted in the original Broadway production, which may help explain why, as director, he let so much of this movie turn back into a play. Eventually studio boss Howard Hughes, who had produced the 1928 film version (directed by Lewis Milestone), once again called in another director to do salvage work.
That was Nicholas Ray, whose scenes include police captain Robert Mitchum's pursuit of the man who has just bombed his home. Mitchum's fellow cast members include Robert Ryan as the ultra-paranoid gangster; husky-voiced noir blonde Lizabeth Scott as a nightclub thrush romanced by Ryan's brother; future Perry Mason D.A. William Talman as a dedicated street cop; and Ray Collins and William Conrad as two municipal officials negotiating a delicate dance with morality and expediency. --Richard T. Jameson

awesome noir.......2007-04-20
like the other 2 volumes in this series vol 3 outshines even them. found all dvd's compelling viewing, well remastered for excellent sound and picture quality. if film noir from the 40's and 50's is your penchant then look no further than these releases. i have only one question, when or where are we getting volume 4? Jim Boggan, Dublin, Ireland
A must-have .......2007-03-23
The Noir genre appears as the most original cinematographic legacy of the American cinema along the Century.
Unlike the Western whose emblematic epic feature (with their few exceptions), the Noir is supported by the unbearable lightness of the being in which twists of fate, ironic designs, existential instability, lack of center, cosmic nasty tricks hovered by an irrational universe in which nobody is like it seems.
This manifest incapacity of distinguishing what's right or what's wrong, the awful sensation of diffidence respect your beloved couple, the new friend you met last night, was systematically enhancing with new visions, fed by the plethora of European filmmakers that certainly had experienced his particular fears and anguishes with the dark shadows of a raising Nazism and the emerging void's perception that you could feel and even breath in your environment.
All this set of new factors, enriched, enhanced and expanded the vision of many layers of a society, seers, salesmen, boxers, gangsters, false policemen, doctors, sideshow performers, psychologists or depressive characters.
The WW2 in good measure, renovated the internal demons of the alcoholism, gangster's rivalries, corruption, sexual frustrations or the figure of the classic antihero of the thirties ( The petrified forest or High Sierra) frequently ex cons or orphans youngsters whose parents died in the WW1 or committed suicide during the great Depression.
Good copies of good films.......2007-01-13
An excellent product, good copies of some really good films
Film Noir Classics of the second rank, Very Good indeed.......2007-01-06
Lady in the Lake is the weakest and On Dangerous Ground/The Racket are the strongest Border Incident and His Kind of Woman quite good as well. The other two volumes are as good or better but where can you see good prints of these exciting noir movies for a great price? The only other set to recommend to those new to the genre is the Kino's noir set with star performers (and some non-star performers) with great directors. Don't miss out on these four sets, they're terrific entertainment (after a noir movie, we watch a Charley Chase, Keaton or Lloyd short). Great night at home watching these movies before our time (born 1956).
Noir 3 Collection.......2007-01-05
Border Incident and Lady in the Lake are particularly important films in the noir tradition. Though they are all B films, Lady carries the imprint of Raymond Chandler.
The collection is worth having if one is interested in studying noir films, but don't expect any great films here...or even really good ones.

Robert Redford is the executive producer (and narrator) of this fine, eye-opening documentary about the violent events that took place in 1975 on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Indian activists ended up in an extended standoff with FBI agents, and the result was several deaths, including two federal men whose killing (according to many people) was never clearly attributed to a specific gunman. Nevertheless, the government laid blame for the tragedy on Leonard Peltier, a Sioux political leader who has long been a focus for supporters believing he took the fall, possibly heroically, for others. Peltier has spent many years in prison, and Apted's film, which is hardly ambiguous in its commitment toward Peltier's hoped-for freedom, is persuasive in both its detail and its case against brutal federal policies toward Indians. Whatever one's position on the Peltier question, this is a compelling piece of work. --Tom Keogh

A must see movie.......2007-06-01
This true story about Leonard Peltier, an American Indian, who is still in prison for crimes he did not commit will open your eyes to the unjust treatment of Native Americans by our government. The government's logic...Somebody had to pay for the killing of 2 white agents. So they pin it on Leonard Peltier, a Native American. FREE PELTIER!!!
Incient at Oglala--Leonard Peltier.......2007-05-17
This is a documentary about the murders of 2 FBI agents on an Indian reservation in South Dakota. The movie is slightly biased in favor of Leonard Peltier an AIM member who was tried and convicted of the 2 murders. (It was biased toward him--but rightfully so.) This movie gives good insight to the tensions and history of "civil war" on the reservation during the 70s and 80s. They provide convincing evidence that Peltier was not given a fair trial and that the FBI bullied and falsified evidence to get a conviction at any cost. Key witnesses, AIM members, and Leonard Peltier give their version of what happened that day on the Res. John Trudell, also, sheds light on the tensions of AIM and the GOONs in that time period, as well as some of his own personal dealings/pain with losing his family in the cause.
This is a good documentary for anyone interested in Native Americans of past and present and anyone interested in justice and American rights. Native or white, we are all Americans and deserve justice and fairness.
I don't think you can go wrong with buying this film. If you are interested in present-day Native American culture and/or the Leonard Peltier case, then you should purchase the movie Thunderheart as well. Thunderheart is a drama that takes part of the Peltier story and meshes it with a storyline of the civil war between AIM and the GOONs. Thunderheart would be a little more clear if you have a background on AIM first. So, watch Incident at Oglala first and then watch Thunderheart. I hope you enjoy it and find it as informative as I have.
Well executed documentary.......2007-04-21
This is a very well executed documentary. I have to admit I've heard the name Leonard Peltier thrown around for years and never had taken time until now to find out what the case was really about or what the issues were behind it. This film definitely has an agenda but after viewing it it is difficult to understand how anyone could not be shocked and sickened by some of the tactics the government employed to convict Peltier as well as just the awfulness of the lives of so many Native Americans on the reservations.
A great documentary.......2007-04-01
This is a wonderful documentary, a great story with sweepign vistas, songs and narrative. It tells the story of Leonard Peltier an AIM activist accused of murdering federal agents on the Pine Ridge reservation. He is now on the great cause celebre's of the American prison system, and this movie makes the case for a false conviction, citing a variety of problems including the kind of car he drove and the weapon used in the shooting.
Regardless of the truth, and the film is obviously an argument, this is an interesting documentary that tells the tale of an American tradegy, the confrontation of the AIM movement by the FBI and the killings that insued. The AIM movement was an important movement and its tragedy is part of the overall tragedy of the reservations. Either way this is an great documentary.
Seth J. Frantzman
A Pitiful Experience for all....................2007-03-21
Leonard Peltier. Not for everyone...but it ought to be.As an australian..it is not easy to comprehend the overt racism white america has towards its indigineous people .( likewise it is not easy to understand the racism here in Australia) But as an outsider ...it is harder. For some this is history...but for all the lives affected by this event I imagine it is carried with them to this day.If what is portrayed is true..it will come as no surprise as the typical injustices of the american legal system ..revenge disguised as justice. Dis- heartening...violence and ignorant prejudice will never be a solution....if Peltier is innocent...one would have to ask where is the honour of the person responsible? I'm not the one to judge.

Best Cold War Film.......2007-05-07
This film is the best Cold War film I have ever watched!
Richard Widmark,Sidney Poitier and Martin Balsam are absolutely superb in this film! I am amazed that this film, which was made in 1965, is as poignant now as it was then. Only Richard Burton's 'The Spy Who Came in from the Cold
can be truly compared in quality to this Cold War thriller!
I don't ever recall seeing this film on broadcast television or cable. Was it ever aired after it's theatrical release? I definitely know this film is not for weak nerves. There is not a boring segment throughout!
I have been collecting DVD's of Sidney Poitier recently and I just purchased this one. I can't help but say this is his best film,in my opinion. This man is a fantastic screen presence!
It was also fun watching James MacArthur in this film as a young Navy ensign. (He later went on to become Dan-O on Hawaii Five-0).Hawaii Five-0 - The Complete First Season
Please, if you truly want to watch an excellent film drama purchase this DVD!
Good movie, bad price.......2007-03-15
Don't get me wrong by my rating. This is an excellent film. However $24.95 is way too high a price to pay for this, especially considering there are no extras at all. What were they thinking? It should have been $9.95 retail, which I'm sure it eventually will be. So for now, be happy with your video copy. Or if you have a dvd recorder, just wait for it to show up on Turner Classics.
Shocking cold-war classic.......2006-11-02
This is intense edge-of-your seat drama. A frightening portrayal of the obcessive cold-war captain mistaking equates fear of his authority with readiness in war. The end is inevitable and chilling. Mr. Portier's character comes off a bit on the preachy and self-righteous side but still gripping and likeable. Richard Widmark is, perhaps, at his best in this film and gives a stunning performance as the obcessive and bullying captain. A great addition to any intense thriller drama library.
excellent suspense.......2006-06-15
I first watched this film many years ago....It was one of the most suspenseful movies I had ever seen at that time. Widmark and Poitier are both excellent in their respective roles...In fact, the whole cast is excellent.
I especially enjoyed James McArthur of Hawaii Five-O fame and Wally Cox.
This is a film that will keep you on the edge for its length.
A real Cold War Chiller!.......2006-04-06
Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier are reunited from their movie "No Way Out" and in a bit of a stretch their roles reversed. Widmark plays a staunch and disciplined, bordering on fanatic, captain of the naval destroyer U.S.S Bedford involved in a cat and mouse chase of a Soviet submarine. Poitier plays an over enthusiastic reporter bend on getting the true story of the most deadly game being played out.
This is a great Cold War movie boasting an impeccable cast of supporting actors and a perfect companion to "Fail-Safe". As with Fail Safe and The Longest Day, appropriately filmed in B&W.

Amazon.com essential video
The Ox-Bow Incident is one of the essential Westerns, directed by William Wellman. A study of the effects--and aftereffects--of mob violence, this film (based on a true story) begins with the murder of a popular rancher. Angry townspeople form a posse, find suspects, and, without waiting for a trial, summarily hang them in an expression of biblically tinged frontier justice. But the one cowboy who tried to turn the mob aside ultimately proves that they executed innocent men. Made in 1943, the film features stunning black-and-white cinematography and a solid dramatic sense about what a deadly combination ignorance and self-righteousness can be. Fonda made this film between The Grapes of Wrath and My Darling Clementine, at a point when he was at the peak of his powers as a young actor. --Marshall Fine
Description
Two drifters are passing through a Western town, when news comes in that a local farmer has been murdered and his cattle stolen. The townspeople, joined by the drifters, form a posse to catch the perpetrators. They find three men in possession of the cattle, and are determined to see justice done on the spot.
Customer Reviews:
Great film for mobbing illustration.......2007-06-20
This film illustrates the mob rule that takes over - when a group decides to castigate someone.
For anyone who has been persecuted, maligned, or mistreated - at the hands of the mob (an evil group of people of any type) - this book is a must.
ox bow incident.......2006-11-07
henry fonda- one of the finest actors ever. terrific in grapes of wrath. this movie deals with the mob mentality. the mob jumps to convict and execute three hapless, full of pity, and innocent men. may we never fall into these circumstances.
The bleak nihilism of William Wellman..........2006-11-06
The theme here is based on William's Wellman's stern, uncompromising study of mob rule, set in the Old West... It is one of tragic misunderstanding, the sort of witches brew of error, impatience and intolerance, which must have often characterized Western rough justice...
Mob fury surrounds a little cattle-town like a fever... Most citizens seem only too eager to join a manhunt for the murderer of a rancher... Henry Fonda and his sidekick Henry Morgan have to go along with the tide, if only for the fact that, as wanderers passing through, they are not above suspicion themselves...
The unofficial posse, under the leadership of Major Tetley (Frank Conroy) comes upon the campfire of three suspects...
On the basis of circumstantial evidence, Tetley exhorts the mob into an on-the-spot trial... Despite the pleas of a few dissenters, a guilty verdict t is quickly reached and a triple lynching is performed...
Then, riding back, the lynch-mob gets the news that the rancher is still alive and the real villains have been taken...
"The Oxbow Incident" was never a box office success, but was rewarded with an Oscar nomination for Best Picture... However the film makes its point, as well as it ever did... It's not only about the social injustice of instant justice; it's also about human nature, all its oddities, frailties and the perils therein... It's often said that it laid the beginning of the psychological Western... That's perhaps too big and ambiguous a claim... What it does possess to a marked degree is keen observation, and a fine distinction that is never difficult to see...
A Timeless Classic.......2006-10-28
The Ox-Bow Incident is one of those seminal films where everything about it looks right, feels right, and sounds right. The acting, directing, and script are almost more accurate than we can stand, given that the main thrust of the story proves how methodically misguided people can be.
Henry Fonda and Henry Morgan play two drifters who happen into a Western town reeling from the murder of a popular and powerful rancher. They join the town's posse, and catch three men in possession of the rancher's cattle. The posse quickly turns into a lynch mob, with Fonda trying to keep things calm and rational.
The story reveals the sometimes dark and disturbing tendency of society to react with haste and violence rather than with reason and mercy. Based on a true story and a best-selling novel, The Ox-Bow Incident is a cautionary tale, but it is also a mirror. One that is easier to break or ignore than it is to look at.
The Ox-Bow Incident Review .......2006-08-26
This is a fine example of the Hollywood of Old type of movie. It is timely for today since we are basically doing the same thing as the characters did to the three cowboys on the Trail. They, similar to us, act on the wrong information and hang the three cowboys. Later on they learn that no one was killed and the real men are in custody.

More than 50% boring. First episode where I've fast-forwarded parts. The only cool part is when the girl hits the stupid singing guy with the plank of wood. Oh and the fact that she actually sets traps for the killer who's chasing her, that was something the trailer didn't imply. I thought this was going to be one of the dullest of the series and it is.
They're bound to disappoint, I suppose..........2007-04-04
With few exceptions, (CIGARETTE BURNS) I think we may all be coming to realize that this series and its vignettes are by in large disappointments. Horror fans do have high expectations, and perhaps the bar keeps getting raised in what may be unrealistically large increments. But also, these stories are not that clever, and the execution isn't generally very scary or original.
As for this episode, I am a BIG fan of Don Coscarelli, and perhaps that may be a factor that resulted in impractically high expectations. This film definitely wasn't the worst of the bunch (HOMECOMING, CHOCOLATE). It wasn't terrible, or even all that bad. It was competently made, with a creepy and disturbing atmosphere, which is what the director was trying for, and did generate some chilling moments. But it wasn't all that great either. I don't even know if I can say it was very good. Even an actor whom I am a fan of (Angus Scrimm) portrayed a character so poorly written for, that it was difficult to tell if he was supposed to be funny or not. It was a wasted appearance of a fine actor (and very nice guy in real life).
The bottom line is, the rating system we get doesn't examine complex criteria that goes into film-making, nor other objective measures of quality. Simply put, it is based on whether you love or like or dislike or hate a film. In the end, I just didn't like this all that much - not enough for a 3-star anyways. Maybe if the cute actress (BREE TURNER) had gotten nude...
A Killing Education.......2007-03-26
Directed by Don Coscarelli (the man responsible for the gut-wrenching "Phantasm" films and the brilliantly quirky "Bubba Ho-tep"), "Incident" was a fine start to Showtime's promising (but spotty) "Masters of Horror" series.
The beautiful Bree Turner has spent most of her career playing snobby sorority girls and providing attractive scenery to relatively benign movies and T.V. shows. She takes the helm here as Ellen, a woman who wrecks her car late at night while driving through the mountains. Her problems, of course, turn out to be larger than a dented fender. Namely, she must square off with Moonface, a creature who is far deadlier than his name implies.
Ellen, refreshingly, is not your typical horror movie Damsel In Distress. She proves herself to be a worthy (and entertaining) foe to the disturbing creature who stalks her through the rocky woods, a pleasant change of pace from the women who stumble on broken heels, make ludicrous decisions, and prefer screaming to thinking.
In a series of well-placed flashbacks, Coscarelli gives us glimpses of her education in survival, taking place at the hands of her too-eager boyfriend/husband, Bruce. Played by Ethan Embry (who hasn't made much of himself since his "Can't Hardly Wait" days), Bruce is a convincing character, but it's hard to imagine how his slightly off-putting insistence managed to snag a smart and capable lady like Ellen.
No matter. Coscarelli leaves explanations aside, avoiding unnecessary details. What's really important is the tooth-and-nail present. Coscarelli uses standard horror film elements to mold together something decidedly unique and satisfying. It's not particularly ground-breaking, nor is it without its flaws (the flashbacks, while important, sap the story of some of its tension), but it is a comforting bit of entertainment, especially for Fright Fans who are afraid that the genre is in danger of dying a slow and boring death.
Not exactly what you'd think........2007-03-21
Another great show in the series "Masters of Horror". In this episode Ellen (Bree Turner) is driving through the mountains when she has an accident. She goes to check on the other car when she runs into psycho freak Moonface (John De Santis). There is the subsequent babe being chased through the woods by killer, but with a twist; she is a trained survivalist who can set up neat Rambo-like booby traps in the forest. She is finally taken to the obligatory house of horrors. As you can tell there is much to this story than first meets the eye. The production value is top notch, it looks great, even if it is a kind of a "Friday the 13th" knock-off. Horror favorite Angus Scrimm is here, this time he plays a much more animated character than The Tall Man. He's the guy that knows what's going on and explains it. The really stand out feature is the woman Ellen, who is much stronger than the usual scream-queen; more like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If there is one complaint it is this; Don Coscarelli is notorious for his quirky horror fantasy "Phantasm", but there is little of the quirky wit here, it's just a straight stalk and slash slasher. Other wise a great entry in a wonderful series.

Nothing is quite as it seems in Incident at Loch Ness, an entertaining pseudo-documentary comment on cinematic fakery. Conceived and directed by Hollywood screenwriter Zak Penn, this half-clever ruse begins with a master-stroke by casting German director Werner Herzog as himself, preparing to film a documentary about Scotland's mysterious Loch Ness monster. As this film-within-a-film is chronicled by a documentary crew led by renowned cinematographer John Bailey, "producer" Penn rises to apparently impossible heights of ineptitude, until it becomes obvious (indeed, it's the film's near-fatal flaw) that there is no "reality" here at all--just a very amusing pile-up of falsehoods. Penn's onto something good here, and Herzog is by far the film's greatest asset, maintaining a credible commitment to the ruse with a hilarious and fiercely believable performance. Still, the ideas at play are better than Penn's execution of them, so you'll have to play along, in Blair Witch fashion, even after the film's ploy becomes clear. Penn and Herzog provide a worthwhile commentary track, adding another layer of observation to Penn's multilayered con game. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Incident at Loch Ness chronicles the story of the making (an unmaking) of acclaimed director, Werner Herzog's film. Herzog's stated intent was "to explore the origin and the necessity of the monster" rather than to look for the creature itself. Shocking, controversial and strangely humorous, the film raises many questions about where reality ends and fiction begins.

Unwatchable.......2006-11-26
Never have I seen a film so painfully unenjoyable as *Incident at Loch Ness,* and I say this as a fan of Werner Herzog's oeuvre. *Aguirre, the Wrath of God* and *The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser are magisterial works, and Herzog's performance in Harmony Korine's Julien Donkey-boy is mesmerizing.
But this film, I'm afraid to say, is an unendurable bore. Overwhelmed by its rather maladroit attempt at postmodern cheekiness, obvious in its staging, derivative in its conceit, this film I turned off right at the point, some thirty minutes into the film, when a bizarre -- and, for someone of Herzog's stature, embarrassing -- stab at some sort of sophomoric humor involving a Bikini Team bimbo occured.
I have not the slightest idea how or why Herzog came to involve himself in this debacle, but, I have to say, it was quite sad to see his trading on his fame this way.
Therefore, if you know little about Herzog and his films, but are interested in knowing more, see *Grizzly Man,* see *The Burden of Dreams,* see *My Best Fiend,* and, for heaven's sake, stay far, far away from *Incident at Loch Ness,* lest you form a low opinion of an otherwise brilliant filmmaker.
So Bizarre It Works.......2006-08-12
I'm NOT a fan of mockumentaries however `Incident At Loch Ness' is the type of humor so very twisted it works. If anyone had told me what this film was about I wouldn't have seen it. But I'm glad I did. Have no fear, `Incident At Loch Ness' is hysterical!!!
I'm NOT a fan of "reality" TV either. `Incident' works because it is so very silly and knows it, mocking itself. While "reality" shows never embrace their own humor. The fact that `Survivor' was fake yet the audience didn't get it and still defends it as "real" proves mockumentaries are a risky genre. (For those of you still hanging on to the "reality" of `Survivor', please explain how more than one actor played the same character.)
The plot: Artsy German filmmaker Werner Herzog teams up with GenXer Zak Penn to film a documentary in Scotland about the Loch Ness monster, `Enigma of Loch Ness'. Werner takes the art of film very seriously approaching the project with great professionalism. This puts him at great odds with Zak who is treating everything as a joke.
Out on the lake hero Werner and villain Zak come to deadly blows when Werner realizes the ship's sonar operator is a Playmate, their scientist is an unpaid actor, and Zak has created animatronic monsters to appear in the lake. Werner is disgusted that Zak has betrayed the art of his documentary.
But Zak defends his actions to the grave, literally when the ship is attacked by the real Loch Ness monster and kills two crew members.
The humor doesn't end there! A totally separate second film exists in the audio commentary and Werner and Zak look back and argue anew. The two pretend they are in a lawsuit.
`Incident at Loch Ness' goes down as a risky film with very dark humor. Werner takes the situation seriously, making us laugh at how absurd this all is. Zak takes the situation as a joke, making us laugh at how anyone could take the (fictional) seriousness of the situation as a joke.
As a final mind fxxx, `Incident at Loch Ness' was marketed as a REAL documentary NOT a comedy. My video store had it under listed un "documentary."
HIlarious Spoof.......2006-07-29
This has to be one of the most hilariously perplexing, obviously phony movies I've ever stumbled across. So much more intriguing than your average run-of-the-mill mockumentary. Werner Herzog is so engaging a personality, when he says he's going to "hunt down" Zak and strangle him with his two hands, the statement is so simple and delivered with such a deadpan expression, the irony of Zak pulling a gun on Herzog, the bikini clad "sonar operator", and Herzog's sheer magnetism makes the film worth seeing. Any "fan" would love the opportunity to watch Herzog schlumping across the sinking bow of a boat, hosting a pre-production dinner party while worrying that the exotic tuber he has prepared may still be too toxic to eat, or simply listen to him speak, in the finale, about the film as "a stillborn child that simply didn't want to come to life". "The truth...seemed vulgar and pointless."
The film itself I found myself laughing out loud to - anyone who takes this thing seriously enough to write a poor review of it simply doesn't have a sense of the absurd. When I think of all the acclaim for something as insipid as (the previously mentioned) "Blair Witch Project", I have to admit I just don't get those kind of viewers at all.
Wheels within wheels.......2006-07-05
This may be the first mockumentary made... about a mockumentary.
The independent, creative mind clashes with big-budget in "Incident as Loch Ness," a bizarre mockumentary-within-a-mockumentary (sort of a fictional "Lost in Le Mancha"). It has some problems -- a slow pace and spotty humour -- but it's still an interesting little movie.
The movie opens in 2003, with an interviewer visiting Werner Herzog (played by... himself) for a documentary. Herzog explains that his forthcoming movie is a documentary about Loch Ness, and how people want to believe in a monster. For this, he's collaborating with Zakk Penn (himself again), writer of movies like "Elektra," "X2," and "X-Men: The Last Stand." Very, very mainstream.
But problems crop up as soon as they get to Scotland. Herzog finds that Penn has hired a Playmate/sonar operator, an exozoologist and a big inflatable plesiosaur. He's trying to turn the intelligent documentary into Hollywood garbage. But as Herzog decides to put a stop to it, something huge in the water attacks the boat...
This is a notable movie for two reasons: It's Zakk Penn's first indie movie, and it's the most bizarre movie that Herzog has ever done. And as we're reminded, he once had a riverboat hauled over a mountain, so that is saying something. At the end, it's hard to even remember that this was all "wheels within wheels."
Stylistically, "Incident" does exactly what it is supposed to do: twist reality, and turn the documentary on its ear. It's slow-paced and rather meditative, like behind-the-scenes documentaries are, and at times it's pretty dull. No outright funny stuff, but it has a sort of wry humour in scenes like the exozoologist showing off his tentacle, or the Playboy girl installing the sonar.
Then after the slow buildup, we get some surprises -- something massive swimming in Loch Ness, which bashes into the boat and cameras. At that point, everything speeds up. The main problem is the ending -- it feels like Penn didn't know how to end the movie, so he just... ended it. Like Herzog says, "It felt empty."
It's pretty easy for people to play themselves by definition, but Herzog and Penn actually do a good job. Of course, they're not playing themselves -- Penn is willing to make himself look like a Hollywood sneak, and that's pretty admirable. And Herzog plays himself as a crabby, brilliant filmmaker who values truth (cinematic and personal) more than anyone else on the tub.
Reality gets twisted into a Mobius strip in this mockumentary-within-a-mockumentary, where Hollywood and independent film collide with a bang. Definitely a weird one.
Brilliant comic masterpiece.......2006-05-27
It won't mean much to anyone who isn't well schooled in the films of Werner Herzog, but that's an obstacle easily overcome, right? Comparisons to the mockumentaries of Christopher Guest are pretty apt, but this is way better. Herzog does an absolutely priceless impression of Herzog. I've never seen a funnier movie.

ENJOYABLE MOVIE - BUT..........2007-03-12
Enjoyed the movie. The only problem I had was the the audio sinc was slightly off on part of the movie - the dialog did not match up with the actors lip movement - annoying - otherwise I would have given it 4 stars
Great fun if you're not an uptight Baker Street Irregular.......2006-12-13
This is the 2nd of 2 very long TV movies/miniseries featuring two wonderful actors: Christopher Lee as Holmes and Patrick Macnee as Watson. (The following year a 3rd, "Sherlock Holmes in New York", promoted Macnee to Holmes.) Like the first, it has faults and virtues, although ultimately weighted on the side of the latter. As a side note, when shown on TV in this country, this film and its companion were each cut by about a quarter-hour.
However loosely - and it's very, very loosely - this film is related to an old Basil Rathbone film, "Terror by Night". This involves transporting a fabulous diamond, the "Star of Rhodesia", with Holmes overseeing security. "Incident at Victoria Falls" also involves a fabulous diamond, the "Star of Africa". This latter is an actual diamond, although much larger than the gem displayed in the film. That was the Cullinan Diamond, over 300 carats (well over a pound!) in the rough. The Cullinan was eventually cut in to 9 large gems and a goodly number of smaller items. These are all now part of the Crown Jewels.
The film's "Star of Africa", already cut and polished, is - like the Cullinan - going to be transported from South Africa to Britain, where it will be presented to Edward VIII. Mycroft Holmes sends his brother Sherlock to provide security with a plan involving a glass duplicate of the "Star". Yeah. You all know how this turns out: we get to play "diamond, diamond, who's got the diamond?" for the next couple of hours. But it's all in good fun, only slightly spoiled by the banality of the script - I found myself on a number of occasions saying the next highly predictable line before the character who had it. On the bright side, we only get a glimpse of Holmes wearing a deerstalker instead of being constantly treated to that particular wardrobe malfunction.
As for the rest of the cast, there are few that would be much recognized on this side of the Pond. As to characters, it will turn out that one of them is a ringer - not really a fair cop, since we're given no clue that there's anything suspicious about him or her. In the cast, several well-known historical names appear ... such as King Edward (played by the estimable Joss Ackland), Lillie Langtree (played by a fine actor, Jenny Seagrove), Theodore Roosevelt (played by the well-known Claude Akins), and Gugliamo Marconi (played by an unknown, Steven Gurney).
The settings for the film are scenic, and the action usually brisk. The train trip from Capetown to Victoria Falls is a lot of fun, enlivened particularly by Claude Akins, who plays Teddy Roosevelt with appropriate and effective swagger and bluster.
The script writers may have assumed the viewer would already know of the relationship between Langtree and Edward VIII - but in any event, this fact never appears in plot or dialogue - not to mention the fact that Ms. Langtree's participation in the story contains elements entirely antithetical to her actual character.
The story takes a number of twists and turns, although Holmes's vade mecum, detection by deduction, sometimes falls by the side of the road. In this respect, the film falls short of the standard set by the great Basil Rathbone ... not to mention the even greater Jeremy Brett.
Well, no film is perfect. This one is a good evening's entertainment, over 3 hours long. While the cast is generally average, Lee and Macnee give the entire film centrality and impetus. The trick here is not to mind the various little problems and go along for the ride. It's a pretty good one, especially the railroad.
Holmes and Roosevelt join forces in a diamond hunt in Africa .......2006-11-01
This mini series originaly was four hours long and not the two hours shown here, the American version got dramaticly cut for its showing in the states. I have the privalige of owning the full length versions of both mini series. The show is really fun, taking place in 1910 and Holmes has filed that he is in retirement. Until the king himself demands that Holmes and Watson take a rare diamond to Africa to exchange it to the country. The case involves many entangeled love affairs, false identifaction, lies, and murder. One of the many traits that the film has is its adventure, you might call it the Indiana Jones version of Holmes. Holmes and Watson jumping onto trains, Holmes fighting Lions, Watson falling into booby traps and holmes has to do the rescuing, and the climax takes place in a cave with barried treasure.
Some plus's:
Lee's performance as Holmes.
The adventure.
Loaded with historical characters and events.
Holmes and Watson try to stop a locomotive.
And the mystry really has the viewer in suspence all throughout the four hours.
The Train investigation.
Negetives:
The scripting has some holes.
Watson shares some odd replies.
All in all a good Sherlock Holmes film. Five stars!

Customer Reviews:
Bonnaroo 2005 DVD.......2007-03-28
Have not heard one of these Bonnaroo DVDs that I don't love.
The variety is tremendous and the opportunity to see some of these bands for the 1st time, without having to endure the obstacles of the festival is not to be missed.
A great musical experience.......2005-04-10
This is a fantastic musical collection. When I bought it, I hadn't heard of most of the bands, only Les' Bands, Tre, and String Cheese. Eye opening to say the least. Spreads the message that it's all about the music. Definately worth the money, scope it out.
A Great Show.......2005-03-29
Bonnaroo is the closest thing there is to a old fashioned classic music festival. The bands are tremendous. Les Claypool is sick and Widespread Panic is awesomeon Blue Indian. Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer turn out a great performance. This is a great DVD and i recommend it to anyone who is into the jam band scene. moe. gets the snub on the DVD but they weren't that big then. Great variety and an excelent music documentary. North Mississippi Allstars and Robert Randolph and the Family Band put out great performances.
The closest thing to Woodstock........2004-05-31
We at the Ligonus International Media Corporation like to have a good time too! We feel that this is a great example of good times, good music, and good fun! The list of bands present at the concert is amazing! A must see for any music lover.
Why are even the used ones so expensive?............2004-05-19
Because the people selling them know how good this is. This may be the best concert DVD I own. I owned Bonnaroo 2003 before this one -- it's good, but this is better. Disc 1 runs more than two hours, and it's so good it's hard to look away. The second disc is a bit of a letdown, to be honest -- they breeze through a some partial performances, intercut with a lot of random crowd footage. In general, the DVD (and plenty of others, for that matter) would benefit from less documentary stuff and more concert footage. I also want to know why in the world they can't start making concert DVDs with decent liner notes that actually tell you something. Thank you to the reviewer who posted the tracklist.
