The Disney touch is all over this grand, colorful version of the Johann Wyss adventure of a European family set off for the new world of New Guinea. The film opens on a ship jostled and torn by a raging storm while a family struggles to make it through alive. Tossed into a reef near a deserted tropical island, father John Mills takes charge and the family soon turns their island prison into a veritable paradise. Their multilevel tree house, built in record time, is complete with running water and a working pipe organ scavenged from the ship, while their grand yard is abloom in English roses. As a tale of hardship and pioneer pluck, the tale is pure fantasy, but as entertainment it's energetic and appealing. The island is impossibly populated by ostriches, zebras, lions, and elephants, a private zoo that delights the youngest boy and offers plenty of comic relief. The two older brothers discover even wilder life when they rescue the prisoner of oriental pirates (led by hard-bitten Sessue Hayakawa). There's little real danger anywhere in the film--even the climactic battle with the pirates is a cartoonish affair, with coconut bombs and nonlethal booby traps, until the final desperate, deadly moments. Hardly a faithful adaptation of the novel, but a lush, beautifully photographed film and an entertaining adventure safe for all ages. Dorothy McGuire costars as the proper, worry-prone mother. (Ages 5 and older) --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Knew I could find.......2007-06-04

My son loved the movie Swiss Family Robinson when he was little. I have looked for it previously in stores but could not find. I knew we could find it on Amazon. I have told my grandchildren about the movie and the adventures the family has on an island. I got this movie for my son for Father's day so he can share it with his children. The movie is funny, adventurous, and shows so much ingenuity when the family needs shelter. It is a good family movie all will enjoy.

This is a great movie. I bought the DVD To ensure my Grandchildern had a chance to see this Movie.

5 out of 5 stars One Of Our Family's Favorite Classic Stories.......2007-05-11

This DVD contains Disney's adaptation of the original book, Der Schweizerische Robinson, written by author Johann David Wyss, in 1812. It is one of the finer works of Disney, in my opinion. The story of this family's struggles and determination, difficulties and joys is good watching (and good reading) for every member of the family. One of the most delightful aspects of this work is the emphasis placed upon good character, family values, and self-reliance. I recommend this movie to everyone...

5 out of 5 stars Talk about a CLASSIC!!!.......2007-05-10

You can't go wrong here! My siblings and I LOVED this movie as kids. I bought it for my son and daughter when they were younger and again, they LOVED it and watched it (and quoted it) repeatedly. I am now buying it for my young (7ish) nephews to enjoy. Probably my favorite no-cartoon Disney flick of all time!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Family Movie.......2007-04-03

This is an excellent movie. I am so glad I purchased it for my son. I got it for his birthday 7 and at first he didnt really have an interest in watching it, but he was home from school sick one day and we watched it and I couldnt tear him away. He loved it! Its adventure, imagination, and fun all rolled into one.

After they first worked together on the 1966 film This Property Is Condemned, director Sydney Pollack and Robert Redford continued their long-lasting collaboration with this 1972 drama set during the mid-1800s, about one man's rugged effort to shed the burden of civilization and learn to survive in the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains. Will Geer is perfectly cast as the seasoned trapper who teaches Jeremiah Johnson (Redford) how to survive against harsh winters, close encounters with grizzly bears, and hostile Crow Indians. In the course of his adventure, Johnson marries the daughter of a Flathead Indian chief, forms a makeshift family, and ultimately assumes a mythic place in Rocky Mountain folklore. Shot entirely on location in Utah, the film boasts an abundance of breathtaking widescreen scenery, and the story (despite a PG rating) doesn't flinch from the brutality of the wilderness. In addition to the original theatrical trailer, remastered Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, and informative production notes, the DVD also includes The Saga of Jeremiah Johnson, a promotional documentary on the making of the film. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars realism with mythology.......2007-05-20

Great realism about life in the mountains of the west in the middle 1800s ( a time of the brutal transformation of the west from the Indian territory to that of white civilization.)

5 out of 5 stars Mountain Man.......2007-05-13

One of the all time favorite movies. Plenty of action and outdoor adventure. Great scenery. A good picture of a dying breed of men and a time in history.

5 out of 5 stars One of the great classic westerns.......2007-05-12

Forget all the cowboys and indians stuff, redskins biting the dust etc. This tells a story the way it really was. The hardship, the struggle, the beauty and the ugliness of the old, pre-civil-war west. Here is an honest, beautifully photographed reconstruction of a true - if exaggerated - story of a real-life mountain man, John Johnston, who became a legend in his own lifetime. So, for that matter, did old-timers like 'Bear Claw' Chris Lapp, Del Gue, Swan and others. They all lived. They're all here and they're all honestly portrayed.

I used to have this Video for many years. But someone stole it from me. I decided to get it again to my collection and here it is,Thank God.
I had missed it,but now I can look at it whenever I want to.

Amazon.com essential video

Lizard-like Draconian Louis Gossett Jr. and his mortal enemy, earthling Dennis Quaid, crash-land on a hostile planet during a brutal space battle. Forced to rely on one another for survival, they overcome their differences and become fast friends. You can almost hear them break into an off-key version of "It's a Small World." German director Wolfgang Petersen, so brutally honest with his film Das Boot, turns warm and cuddly on us with this intergalactic buddy movie. Much of the problem, though, is that the script sets us up for an intriguing encounter, then settles for a simple and sentimental resolution. Noteworthy set design and strong performances, especially by Gossett, push this beyond mere mediocrity. His performance is fascinating, as he must speak in an alien tongue, which he maintains with artistry and consistency. --Rochelle O'Gorman

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgia.......2007-06-21

Excellent story line. However, you may be turned off by the old props and sets. Nothing close to what we have today. I'd buy it only if I wanted to take a stroll down memory lane.

4 out of 5 stars Different sci-fi story..........2007-04-04

This film teaches a lesson from the other side of the political isle than I usually sit, but it tells it well. It is vaguely reminiscent of other films from the 1940's but I can't remember a title. It is a "know thy enemy" film, and teaches about culture clash. I'm not one to respect another culture if it demands it, but if it earns it I do. This film is about two warriors that get stranded together on a dangerously hostile world and have to work together to survive. They learn each other's languages, and culture in a way even a die-hard conservative like me cannot argue with. Perhaps everyone can learn something from this. The film is about right and wrong, and it can change one's perspective. In the end, I remember the audience cheering in the theatres.

4 out of 5 stars I loved it.......2007-03-09

What a great movie. good time you have watchign this one.
Its a one of a kind movie.
if your a star wars or star gate fan like my girlfriend, you will truly like this movie. its the only sci-fi movie with ''sad'' part in it. really good movie suited for nearly anyone. watch this one with your girlfriend rather then your beer drinking pals.

5 out of 5 stars A must-see for SF lovers.......2007-01-11

Great touching story of friendship between enemies and in this case, species.
Good lesson to learn an apply.
A classic movie I wanted to own and show to my kids.

4 out of 5 stars Different .......2007-01-08

I have seen this movie many times while growing up. Its definately a different approach to Science Fiction, but not too bad. Basically, you get to see how mortal enemies can work out their differences, and work together. A movie with a message.

After viewing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote to Walt Disney about adapting his novel of an ape-man into a feature animated cartoon. Sixtysome years later, the tale is finally told with brilliant design work that looks unlike any previous animated film. The story is a natural for Disney since the themes of misunderstood central figures have been at the heart of its recent hits. Disney's Tarzan doesn't wander far from the familiar story of a shipwrecked baby who is brought up by apes in Africa. What gives the film its zing is its clever use of music (the songs are sung by Phil Collins himself rather than onscreen characters) and the remarkable animation. Deep Canvas, a 3-D technology, was developed for the film, creating a jungle that comes alive as Tarzan swings through the trees, often looking like a modern skateboarder racing down giant tree limbs. The usual foray of sidekicks, including a rambunctious ape voiced by Rosie O'Donnell, should keep the little ones aptly entertained. The two lead voices, Tony Goldwyn as Tarzan and Minnie Driver as Jane, are inspired choices. Their chemistry helps the story through the weakest points (the last third) and makes Tarzan's initial connection with all things human (including Jane) delicious entertainment. Disney still is not taking risks in its animated films, but as cookie-cutter entertainment, Tarzan makes a pretty good treat. (Ages 5 and up) --Doug Thomas

Description

Swing into action and adventure with Disney's original classic, TARZAN(R), packed with fun-filled bonus features and award-winning music such as the memorable "You'll Be In My Heart" and "Trashin' The Camp." Disney's magnificent animated adaptation of Edgar Rice Burrough's story of the ape man begins deep within the jungle when baby Tarzan is adopted by a family of gorillas. Even though he is shunned as a "hairless wonder" by their leader, Tarzan is accepted by the gorillas and raised as one of their own. Together with his wisecracking ape buddy Terk and neurotic elephant pal Tantor, Tarzan learns how to "surf" and swing through the trees and survive in the animal kingdom. His "Two Worlds" collide with the arrival of humans, forcing Tarzan to choose between a "civilized" life with the beautiful Jane and the life he knows and loves with his gorilla family. Filled with humor, heart, and hilarious fun, TARZAN is an unforgettable adventure you'll watch again and again.~~TARZAN(R) Owned by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. And Used by Permission. Dinosaurs come alive like never before in this costly computer-animated film from Disney. After a breathtaking opening (a dino egg is kidnapped), the film changes style; realistic dinosaurs are given human characteristics and voices. The kidnapped egg grows into an iguanodon named Aladar (voiced by D.B. Sweeney), who is raised by lemurs (shades of Tarzan) on a lush island void of other dinosaurs. When a meteorite destroys their island home in a thrilling sequence, the lemur family and Aladar become part of a dinosaur troop roaming the mainland deserts looking for the lush nesting grounds (shades of the fourth installment of the Land Before Time series and Fantasia). Disney's usual mix of modern language (one lemur calls himself "a love monkey") is present, as is its typical capital punishment law: anyone against our forward-thinking hero (or even disagreeing with him) ends up dead. Curiously, the meanies, a pair of carnotaurs following the group, are nameless and voiceless. This more realistic approach might have been a bigger wow, as in the BBC's Walking with Dinosaurs, which looked extraordinary with only a fraction of the budget. The complexity and scope of Dinosaur's visual scale is impressive, and group shots and a point-of-view angle are stunning. Rated PG for general intensity, the film should be a favorite for the 6- to 11-year-old set. --Doug Thomas

Description

Join the action-packed adventure of a group of dinosaurs overcoming enormous challenges through courage, loyalty, and hope in Disney's DINOSAUR, a special effects phenomenon! Set 65 million years ago, DINOSAUR tells the compelling story of an iguanodon named Aladar, who is separated from his own kind and raised by a clan of lemurs, including the wisecracking Zini and the compassionate Plio. When a devastating meteor shower plunges their world into chaos, Aladar and his family follow a herd of dinosaurs heading for the safety of the "nesting grounds." Along the way, Aladar befriends Baylene, the dignified, elderly brachiosaur with a take-no-prisoners attitude; Eema, the unstoppable styrachosaur; and Neera, a feisty fellow iguanodon. Together, they must stand strong amid food and water shortages, the threat of attacks by carnotaurs, and Aladar's run-ins with the herd's stubborn leader, Kron. As the trip becomes one pulse-quickening adventure after another, it also forges friendships that no hardship can destroy. A landmark in filmmaking technology, Disney's DINOSAUR is a breathtaking spectacle filled with adventure, fun, and life lessons that the whole family will love!

2 out of 5 stars DINOSAUR COLLECTOR'S EDITION IS A RIP OFF..........2007-06-30

The movie is fine, but the 2-disc Collector's Set is a scam. The second disc is garbage and not worth the extra money. The second disc is difficult to navigate and is loaded with useless garbage. Where are the featurettes? If you like the movie, just buy the regular single disc version and avoid the 2-disc rip-off.

5 out of 5 stars Very well done dinosaur movie.......2007-04-23

This movie was great to watch on an afternoon. I liked this movie because it was a feel good movie that had a lot of laughs built into it. The animation was great and the voices of the actors fit into character very well. I also liked the story line of the movie. Bravo to Disney for making such a great movie for everyone!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A splendid dinosaur movie.......2007-04-20

If you kids love dinosaur movies, and love realism...this is it. The animation is spectacular, and the story is sweet and teaches compassion and courage. Disney has done it again...in an unexpected way. Very different from their other offerings, but one of their best.

3 out of 5 stars Breathtaking, thrilling yet polarizing.......2007-03-10

I don't think Disney made an absolutely terrible film (keep in mind I haven't seen Home on the Range or Brother Bear) so we have Dinosaur which many people praise for the animation while it mainly gets a "meh, it was okay" response when it comes down to the actual film itself. Got to give credit to them for at least attending to do something different and not as common as they were starting to do. It's one of those kind of films where you admire the effort and the passion there was but it's just unfortunate other things got lost in the shuffle.

Aladar was a lucky dinosaur: through a series of strange misadventures while he's still an egg, he eventually lands on Lemur Island and befriends the community there. He later grows up and feels a bit alone since there's none of his kind around. One day, a massive meteorite hits the ocean causing the group to vacate the island and they end up stumbling upon a herd of many species searching for the "Nesting Grounds", a sort-of haven for dinosaurs. But then have stalking raptors, T-Rexes, the harsh weather as well as a dinosaur named Kron who is basically the harsh bully who pushes everyone forward and leaves those behind that are too slow.

Since it's obviously going to be the first thing you notice, I might as well start with it first. Using real backgrounds and putting over it CG-characters, this is one gorgeous film. Sometimes it doesn't work such as characters that feel more like Xbox 360 characters and the interaction between real backgrounds and the characters are too noticeable but when they're on it's great. While they're mainly branded the "kid movie studios", when Disney turns up the mature meter, they're unbelievably effective. The centerpiece is the meteor impact which is not only stunning and intense but I love how it's edited, especially the pre-impact part. Ranks with the wildebeest stampede and the avalanche from the Lion King and Mulan as the best action scenes in a Disney film.

How's the rest? Not that good. For one it feels too cliche. You have the main hero who has to save everybody, the anti-everything good bad guy, the love interest who is denied the chance (in this case, she's Kron's sister) and then we have the issue of talking dinos. While this is a photo-realistic looking film which warrants hyper-realism, meaning no talking, it is Disney after all and what kid would sit still to basically watch dinosaurs do stuff? Then we have the issue that the characters themselves are not that interesting. No one really stands out and is that memorable. The only one I even remember chuckling at was Earl, this puppy-acting dino who is quite amusing.

Ultimately, this is one of Disney's more interesting failures. While it did generate a profit and the animation is really great, it's one of those missed opportunities that's hard to shake off.

Claustrophobia and bloody mayhem collide in the high-adrenaline horror flick The Descent. Six women (including one who lost her husband and child the year before, and one who harbors a bitter secret) spelunk in an unexplored cavern system that turns out to harbor mysterious, predatory creatures. That sums up the story, but--as with writer-director Neil Marshall's previous low-concept movie, Dog Soldiers--the plot doesn't begin to describe the riveting, stomach-lurching thrills this movie provides. The script affords the relatively unknown cast (led by Shauna Macdonald and Natalie Mendoza, both excellent) just enough room to make their characters distinct and genuine, so that when they're dropped into utmost peril our empathy is engaged as much as our fear. The dynamic direction and editing make the cavern a palpable, physical presence, even before the creepy beasts crawl out of their nooks. This is not a movie for everyone; it is extremely gruesome and will induce panic attacks in anyone with even a mild fear of closed spaces. But for anyone seeking something smarter, faster, and more wrenching than static torture-fests like Saw or Hostel, The Descent will draw you into its unsettling ooze. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Scary Movie.. Grab the popcorn and enjoy!.......2007-06-27

Definitely a scary movie that keeps you on edge! Make sure you pump up the surround sound on this one! Grab the popcorn but be warned... it will end up on the floor, on you, and in between the couch!

3 out of 5 stars The Descent.......2007-06-19

I went to see 'The Descent' which is a movie about four friends who go on a caving trip and face their worst fears whilst they're down there.
Would these movies be as scary as they are without the unexpected loudness in all the places? Probably not. Still, it was quite interesting for what it was. Kinda like the 'Poseidon' of the caves, wandering through unnavigated areas trying to find a way out, and tragedies occuring frequently along the way.
The monsters got a bit much though. Creamy yellow slimy monsters which scream at and eat people. Once you've seen one, you've seen them all. They all look like Golum from 'Lord Of The Rings' still.
At least the movie wasn't an American blockbuster, it was English. That's something. And you kinda get to know the characters, understanding their personalities in every scene, learning their names and not forgetting them, remembering when someone has died.
My favourite characters were Holly and Juno. Holly was funny and knew how to have a laugh. She annoyed everyone else but she was probably the funnest of them all. No-one really liked Juno but she meant well. I think she would have tried her best for her friends and wouldn't purposely try to hurt them, still, she was the hated one in the end.
The scariest part is when the real life realities are shown. How when we rot away (or in this case flesh eaten by raging mad monsters) all that we are, are bones underneath, and how death can happen so easily. It's frightening how each and every one of us are so robot like, we're machines, humans with minds, feelings, thoughts and emotions, but our bodies are totally separate from that; one false move and we're gone, nothing can change that. No happy endings make me happy though, that's for sure :)
Decent enough movie though, worth seeing. 3 stars.

4 out of 5 stars If you like scary...you get it........2007-06-14

This movie was way too suspenseful for my taste but it was a horror flick. Very scary, very entertaining, keeps you jumping, hiding your eyes, and on the edge of your seat. The ending was very confusing to me though...watch it and let me know if you feel the same.

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding movie.......2007-06-10

There is not much to say about this movie. It is creepy and scary. If you liked Wrong Turn, you will love this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely terrifying!.......2007-06-04

This is one of the better horror movies in recent years...it centers around six women who are brought together after one of the group has a personal family tragedy. They decide to go on a caving expedition deep in the Appalachian Mountains, where they find themselves trapped in the caves. The true horror begins when they discover that the cave is also home to a group of carnivorous beings that defy description...they are that horrifying to look upon. What makes this movie rise above the average horror flick is that the characters are all well-defined, and though they are all relatively unknown, they bring a certain depth to their roles, and each character has something to offer. The main character, Sarah [Shauna Macdonald] is most convincing in her transformation from a passive, grieving woman to a violent, avenging 'angel'. The suspense in this movie builds up in tempo before it is fully unleashed in the showdown between the monsters and the remaining survivors. The cinematography effectively evokes the strange subterranean world inhabited by the creatures, evoking both its beauty and horrors. All in all, a human drama and horror story that makes for compelling viewing.

Description

It was a time of heroes. Well, almost. They were hearty men in those days. Men who, like Bartholomew Hunt and Leslie Edwards, made sure that when adventure called, it got a wrong number. Chris Farley and Matthew Perry team with director Christopher Guest (Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show) to venture into uncharted comedy territory. Where explorers Lewis and Clark go, Hunt (Farley) and Edwards (Perry) follow, hoping to overtake the famed expeditioners and be the more fiery trailblazers. In a land dotted with bears, native tribes, pioneer outposts and wandering conquistadors having a bad hair day, is there not also room for two more adventurers eager to make a name for themselves? Westward ho-ho-ho!

I've been waiting for this to come out on DVD forever! I have practically worn out my VHS copy. Get ready to have your sides split with laughter as these two try to beat Lewis and Clark to the coast. Add a zany character played by Eugene Levy to kick it up even another notch of uber-funny! The comedic styles of Matthew Perry and Chris Farley really compliment each other to appeal to what ever your sense of humour may be. The supporting cast was excellent as well. Get this one, you won't be sorry!

Filmed in the IMAX format, this film had the luck (or lack thereof) to be shot during the same fateful and fatal climb of Mount Everest chronicled in Jon Krakauer's book, Into Thin Air, in which a group of rich hobby climbers found themselves trapped by a blizzard near the summit. The IMAX film contains footage of those people, but focuses on its own group, as they make their assault on the top of the world's highest peak. Some startling footage of the mountain and the approaches--and, as in Krakauer's book, the depiction of what is involved in this kind of adventure (particularly the pain and suffering)--makes you wonder exactly where the fun is. But documentary film is about showing you something you're not likely to see otherwise, and this movie certainly fills the bill. --Marshall Fine

Description

Join an international team of climbers as they scale the world's tallest peak. Witness the perils of skin-blistering cold, violent blizzards that drop the windchill to minus 100 degrees, and air so thin it numbs the mind. EVEREST will take you across creaking icefalls and gaping chasms, up dangerous, towering cliffs and into the death zone of oxygen-thin altitude. Filmed in spellbinding IMAX photography, "the most hyperrealistic format yet invented," says producer Greg MacGillivray. Narrated by Academy Award(R)-nominee Liam Neeson, including the music of George Harrison, EVEREST is a rich, dramatic story -- a daring adventure of triumph and tragedy.

As a teacher, my students are studying Asia. I have used this video in class as it gives explanations of how mountains are formed and can spark numerous discussions related to science, geography, and human spirit. The students love it also and asked to watch it again!

5 out of 5 stars Best seen large.......2007-05-13

I had seen this film in its original IMAX format and did not know how it would translate to the small screen. On my television screen it was disappointing. Luckily, at school I was showing it in a bigger format, and although not as impressive as an IMAX screen, it still inspired the awe that Everest should. If you can see it on a big screen, I recommend it, but fir the small screen it is more the information than the images you will appreciate.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Movie.......2007-04-10

This is an excellent movie. Specially if you consider the difficulties related to shooting an IMAX movie at 8000 meters high!

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking !.......2007-03-08

Incredible cinemphotography, stunning vistas. Gripping story. As a mountaineer I can certainly appreciate the difficulty of getting that type of footage at altitude while facing the elements and using such large equipment.
A must see.

This is the only time the I have, in print, reviewed ANYTHING. I am not a skilled writer. But I was so unimpressed with this DVD that I felt compelled to let others know I feel about it. The photography has no "soul." The interviews, though conducted with important people, come across as unimportant. This DVD is visually and dramatically boring.

A cuddly koala who wants to be fierce, a squirrel in love with a sarcastic giraffe, an addle-pated anaconda, and a lion with a secret set off from their cozy zoo to rescue the lion's adolescent cub from an accidental kidnapping. After braving the dangers of the big city and stealing a boat, they find themselves in the African jungle, where a renegade herd of wildebeest have decided they want to change their position on the food chain (understandable, really). The Wild is hodgepodge--it's never clear why these mismatched creatures are friends and plot elements seem haphazardly plucked from Finding Nemo, Madagascar, and Ice Age: The Meltdown (though the latter two were made at the same time as The Wild, so it's just unfortunate for this movie that they came out first). Despite a general air of manic desperation, The Wild does have its strengths: The animation is richly realistic, leading to some gorgeous depictions of light (not exactly a selling point for kids, but adults can appreciate it). Several characters pop out--a pair of sewer crocodiles sound like NPR's Car Talk guys; William Shatner (Star Trek, Boston Legal) is effectively scary as the cult-leader/choreographer of the wildebeest; and comedian Eddie Izzard lends some of his trademark smart and silly humor to Nigel, the disgruntled koala bear. Successful bits and pieces don't make for a great movie, but they keep The Wild from the brink of disaster. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great for Kids; Parents Will Get a Laugh or Two.......2007-06-13

I liked this movie as a light comedy. The movie was cute and remarkably clever in several places. However, the movie follows a Disney trend in that the movie is more oriented for children than adults. So, while there were parts of the movie that I enjoyed, in general my thought was, "Ho, hum."

Samson the lion (Kiefer Sutherland) is the "king" of the zoo. Samson is a leader at the zoo, and seems to always be in control and to know the right thing to do. Son Ryan (Greg Cipes) is at that awkward age where he wants to be more like dad, but he still has a lot of experience to gain first.

Ryan accidentally ends up in a truck trailer heading to Africa. Samson, Benny the manic squirrel (Jim Belushi), Bridget the giraffe (Janeane Garofalo), Nigel the Koala (Eddie Izzard), and Larry the Snake (Richard Kind) mount a rescue mission to save Ryan. The journey takes the group through the wilds of the city to the real wild of the African jungle, where they meet a crazy wildebeest named Kazar (William Shatner). Troubles abound for the group as they face an array of animals and natural disasters while trying to return safely to their zoo home.

The biggest problem this movie has is that it is a "me too" movie. I have watched "Ice Age" movies, "The Lion King," "Happy Feet," and many more. After a while, the whole "animals off on a quest" plot gets to be a little old. Fortunately, there is enough comedy in this movie to keep this movie from being a waste of time. Nigel the Koala is sarcastic and hilarious. Larry the snake is dopey and adds a different kind of humor. Benny is frenetic and typically funny. The other positive thing is that this movie is very family friendly (as long as the adults can keep from nodding off).

Since this movie is at the tail end of a long list of movies with similar themes, I am not sure what this movie could have done better, except being released a few years from now. There is good comedy and characterizations. The story is weak, but how complicated can you make a story about rescuing a child? The child is lost, go find him and bring him home. I hope that the current lengthy list of movies using animated animals will end. Then I will pull this one back off the shelf and give it another chance.

Good Luck!

1 out of 5 stars Yawn!.......2007-04-16

I don't know why, but I just couldn't get into this movie. I found it to be pretty boring. About the only character that stands out to me in this film is the koala bear.
I did like the way they made the animals so realistic, and I also liked the chameleon scenes and how they changed in so many diffrent colors.
But those were about the only things I liked about this film, and I am glad I rented it first as it is not a film I will watch again.

3 out of 5 stars Not that good. But not that bad either........2007-04-12

Samson is the King of The NYC Zoo. A middle aged lion that tells the same stories of past glories over and over to all who will listen, but especially to his son Ryan. Stories of when he lived "in the wild", in the jungles of Africa. So not only does he inspire awe in his son, he also makes his son feel grossly inadequate.

During a game where all the members of the zoo spend some time humiliating the turtles, Ryan causes a big too do, creating a stampede of gazelles. He gets lectured by his dad and goes off to sulk. In one of those wonderful twists of fate that drives a movie plot, Ryan ends up in a container being shipped to Africa. Samson manages to see that his son is being shipped off, but is unable to prevent it from happening. So he, and his gang of pals from the zoo give chase. In a story with no memorable scenes or lines, after some mild adventures in the city and then in the sewer, they all end up on a boat on their way to Africa.

Once there, they find out Samson is a phony and didn't grow up in the wild, and is in fact a coward. They discover a psycho tribe of wildebeest that want to switch from hunted to hunters And they find Ryan. In the end Samson grows a pair, and manages to overcome his cowardice and roar which saves the day. He, his son, their wacky pack of friends and the now converted wildebeest (except for the leader) all manage to get on a boat back to the good old US of A.

Eddie Izzard's performance as Nigel the Koala is the only thing that comes close to being a highlight in this film, but you'll still not remember any of it the next day.

This movie has the same basic premise as Madagascar, with zoo animals ending up back in Africa. The father searching for his lost son aspect of Finding Nemo and the sons feelings of inadequacies when comparing himself to his father from The Lion King. And it's not one tenth as good as any of those movies. Well, it's actually just as good as Madagascar. Neither movie is great, by any stretch. Is the animation well done? Of course it is, it's computer animation, like almost every new animated film out there. The novelty of something like that getting bonus points just doesn't fly anymore, the days of Toy Story are long gone.

And the real truth is, as a movie to entertain children, which is what this is supposed to be, it works just fine. Better than fine actually, it will work great. The kids will enjoy it. There's more than enough action, silly jokes and quirks to make this enjoyable for any kid. It works fine for what it's supposed to. It's just other movies actually do it much better. And yes, this last paragraph is an exact copy from my review of Madagascar. And why not, they're basically copies of the same movie.

Japanese filmmaker Masanori Hata made this above-average family film about a dog and a cat--friends with a tendency to make mischief--who go on an unanticipated adventure when one is rushed downriver and the other follows. Hata, who took four years to complete the work, relies on purely cinematic storytelling techniques (these animals don't have human voices on the soundtrack), making the film an international favorite. Dudley Moore narrates, but the film works because Hata's filmmaking fundamentals are so good. Kids love this, but adults can easily appreciate and enjoy it, too. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars just what I expected.......2007-06-26

This was one of my favorite movies growing up and now Im so happy I have it on DVD. Its just as I remember it.

4 out of 5 stars The Adventures of Milo and Otis.......2007-06-09

My son "lost" the DVD that we borrowed from the library, so this was a
replacement for that lost item. Thankfully you had it, otherwise, instead of 10.00, it would have cost us 20.00!

5 out of 5 stars A hit for kids as well as adults.......2007-05-20

This was the first movie my two-year-old son ever watched. He had a double ear infection and was whining and crying all day. Nothing would calm him down and make him feel better. So I popped in the DVD and he went from crying hysterically to laughing hysterically in, literally, five minutes. I sat down and watched the entire movie with him and loved it. My husband did too. We've watched it many times together since then. A year later and it's still his favorite movie. Sweet, funny, overall enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Great film.......2007-05-12

This is a timeless, very cute film. It is great for children (and adults) of all ages. I watched it when I was a kid and have passed it on to my kids to watch. They loved it!

3 out of 5 stars It's cute.......2007-05-10

It's a cute movie....I remember it being a lot better when I was younger. Nevertheless, it's enjoyable and a good movie.
