Arguably the best film by Joel and Ethan Coen, the 1990 Miller's Crossing stars Gabriel Byrne as Tom, a loyal lieutenant of a crime boss named Leo (Albert Finney) who is in a Prohibition-era turf war with his major rival, Johnny Caspar (Jon Polito). A man of principle, Tom nevertheless is romantically involved with Leo's lover (Marcia Gay Harden), whose screwy brother (John Turturro) escapes a hit ordered by Caspar only to become Tom's problem. Making matters worse, Tom has outstanding gambling debts he can't pay, which keeps him in regular touch with a punishing enforcer. With all the energy the Coens put into their films, and all their focused appreciation of genre conventions and rules, and all their efforts to turn their movies into ironic appreciations of archetypes in American fiction, they never got their formula so right as with Miller's Crossing. With its Hammett-like dialogue and Byzantine plot and moral chaos mitigated by one hero's personal code, the film so transcends its self-scrutiny as a retro-crime thriller that it is a deserved classic in its own right. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
cohen bros EPIC gangster flick "millers crossing".......2007-06-27
i looked everywhere for this movie retail and amazon was the only one who didn't let me down. millers crossing is everything you need in a gangster movie. plenty of characters you love to hate (caspar, the DANE, the Shmatte) and characters you hate to love (verna, leo, and of course the rogueish Tom). this movie has firepower and surreality. the cohen bros. redefine the genre with a emotional tale of love, betrayal, loyalty and brutality and of course "ETHICS". BUY IT, WATCH IT AND WATCH IT AGAIN.
bored me to death.......2007-06-01
there's nothing i could say to this boring gangster movie, so cliched and deadbeat, lotsa blah, blah this and blah, blah that from several mouth-tough guys. the storyline couldn't be more boring. guys who played tough guys didn't bring out any credible toughness in this film, didn't know what those guys yammering about, didn't seem to be too big deal important and interesting. after tried 45 minutes with mucho yawns, still failed to get connected, so i ejected the dvd, cursed all the way to the video store and returned it. well, same as usual for a boring rental, lost money, time and gas again.
Excellent in all respects.......2007-05-12
Hard to find faults; only nits, like the fact that the many injuries Byrne should accumulate thru film should hospitalize him. Great acting, photography, the usual Coen kinkiness (not overdone), and a deliberate pacing that is nearly perfect. Characters are clearly defined and credible, even when their personalities are eccentric. The only thing missing is the lack of a feature-length commentary on the DVD.
I highly recommend this movie.

The kind of movie where the relevence of one scene to the next and even one line of dialogue to the next is often unclear. I don't understand how they can get made. I watched the first 20 minutes optimistically, and the next 20 in a catatonic state of dumbfounded frustration. If there was any story developing I couldn't tell you a thing about it.
Wonderfully ambivalent in every respect.......2007-03-09
Tom Reagan either sees the whole board like nobody else can, or he is an idiot of the first order. Either seems equally possible to me, as he engages in every double-cross known to man, for reasons which are never made entirely clear. Along the way, he is beaten up seemingly by nearly every inhabitant of the unnamed city's criminal underworld, but seems to accept his lot with resignation.
This movie had so many twists and turns that it required two consecutive viewings to insure that I had it right. One could watch it a million times and still never know exactly what Tom Reagan's motives are. The Coens certainly have no problem leaving the ultimate outcome somewhat unresolved, which always entertains me. Neat, tidy endings are rarely a reflection of real life.
One will find great performances throughout, particularly those of Albert Finney & Gabriel Byrne. The typically twisted Coen humor is on abundant display in the snappy dialogue, sometimes so snappy that the viewer can hardly follow along (Steve Buscemi speaks at such a blistering pace that I had put on the subtitles to make sense of it all).
As other reviewers have said, you either love the Coens or hate them. The surreal, ambivalent qualities which delight some will drives other crazy. I have found both to be true...by the time "Barton Fink" was over, I had no idea what I was even watching anymore, and wondered what the ballyhoo was all about. However, "Miller's Crossing" is a good example of all the best Coenesque qualities falling nicely into place, resulting in a movie which is hugely entertaining without being nearly as frustrating as some others.

A sweet tempered urban love story, Crossing Delancey argues that true love may be in the first place you look. Amy Irving is a single Jewish woman working at an upscale bookstore on the Upper West Side of New York. As much as she longs to be a part of the intellectual literary scene, she is tethered to her roots on the Lower East Side, where her old-fashioned grandmother is forever trying to fix her up. Irving has her eye on a handsome brooding author, but her grandmother enlists the help of a local matchmaker to fix her up with Peter Riegert, a quiet Jewish man who runs a pickle stand in the neighborhood. Soon she must decide what it is she really wants out of life and what love really means to her. Though a very traditional love story, Crossing Delancey has its moments of soul searching drama and an unlikely romance. --Robert Lane
Description
A contemporary New York comedy about Isabella "Izzy" Grossman, a single independent woman who is caught in a romantic quandary when her grandmother hires a Jewish matchmaker to find her a husband.

Great Movie. Poor DVD........2007-05-13
I waited for a long time for this movie to be released on DVD.
It is obviously a great movie, and I will leave it to the other reviews for their detailed reviews on the movies content.
After this movie was released in Feb or March of this year, I couldn't find it after it's release, at my local Circuit City or Best Buy.
Also, while it appears that many people review the "movie", I hadn't noticed anything specific about the DVD version.
This review is really for people who have been waiting for this movie to come out on DVD, but wondering about what the DVD offers over an older good VHS copy, or it might help them to decide if they'd rather wait until they can find a less expensive copy down the road in a few months.
What are the features on the DVD version?
The answer is basically NOTHING.
The picture quality and sound are basically excellent, but that's about it.
(ok that is nice to have, and there is a decent sound track to this movie)
They include the original movie trailer. Big Deal.
Scene selection screen. Big Deal. And finally an option to turn on English subtitles, if you might ever want to listen to your ipod, while you read the subtitles.
For a movie that is so popular with us "romantics", it seems a wasted opportunity to explore the interesting and diverse area of Lower East Side, NYC. (at the very least).
I'm sure they've left the door open, for a 2-disc or better set down the line. Seeing how it took them so long to release even this bare bones version, there must be some "royalties" struggles going on somewhere, that is preventing that from happening.
As Bubby might say..."For THIS, I paid $17 dollar's"... "Oy vey"
Based on these light extras, I would wait until you can pick it up for $7 to $10 sale.
Crossing Delancey.......2007-05-08
This was a delightful story. Amy Irving, Peter Riegert, and Reizl Bozyk were absolutely wonderful.
Absolutely wonderful!!!!.......2007-04-07
This is one of my favorite movies, ever. I was very excited to be able to get this, on DVD and would recommend it to anyone. It is a great family movie. It is romantic, funny and beautiful. Amy Irving is gorgeous and the 'late', Reizl Bozyk, who plays Bubbie is funny and warm. Peter Reigert is also adorable as the love interest and the chemistry between him and Amy Irving is fantastic! Buy this movie, if you want a terrific family movie, that will amuse you, entertain you and teach you and your family, some valuable lessons, on what is really important to make your life happy! If you are reading this review, buy it today!
A very good flick..........2007-03-12
A well-acted romantic comedy starring the solid Amy Irving and the fantastic Peter Riegert. Riegert has a recurring role on Law and Order:SVU and was hilarious in Stallone's 20's crime comedy, Oscar. The guy is a fantastic actor and should be seen with far more regularity.
The movie is well-paced and thoughtful. The characters are allowed to develop and the supporting players' roles are critical to the outcome of the movie.
This is one of the better examples of the romantic comedy genre...
Crossing Delancey.......2007-03-11
At long last this movie is on dvd! It is a very sweet film about a Jewish woman whose grandmother hires a matchmaker behind her back to try and get her married. Anyone Jewish will relate to this film, although one of my dearest friends who is not Jewish loved it also and this movie was the only thing she wanted for her birthday! Amy Irving and Peter Riegert give wonderful performances and are totally believable as the mismatched couple. And any woman who is over 30 and unmarried will definitely relate to the pressure of being over 30 and unmarried.

Desperate Crossings.......2007-04-02
This was a great program for understanding the difficulties encountered in the early founding of our country. I was really astonished at how dangerous it was to be able to leave England and get to America. This show is very interesting and captivates your interest throughout.
Terrific!.......2007-02-07
This History Channel presentation of the pilgrims is two and a half hours of a well-known and very important part of our American history, although you may not realize how little you actually do know of these separatists and of the times they lived. In fact, it certainly is more movie than documentary and, although interspersed throughout are historians filling in the gaps, this docu-drama is as engulfing and riveting as any full-length period movie I have seen. The lives and times of these early European settlers are authentically portrayed by use of English Shakespearian actors, and the quality shows. Never have I seen any other film put flesh on the bones of the pilgrims to the extent this one does. A social history extravaganza!
The clothing, lighting, effects (especially while on the Mayflower), and, at times, even some of the speech patterns are refected fairly accurately. I did not see the typical revisionist history so often reflected in many of today's historical depictions. They were very religious folk bent on keeping their practices, even if they had to cross the ocean to do it, and this movie shows that in no uncertain terms.
The Indian dramatization was done very well for the most part, although I would have preferred to have their speech in their original (or close to their original) language and include the use of sub-titles.
Oh well, can't have everything.
As an extra added bonus, by the way, there are a couple of short (too short!) extra's - one features the making of this extraordinary documentary, and the other has outtakes and bloopers.
For teachers and lovers of history I recommend this docu-drama very highly. A wonderful way to learn about our early American history.
New Light on an Old Story.......2006-12-14
Most Americans know the story of the Pilgrims and Mayflower...or do they? The History Channel has done a great job here, showing us that there is more to the story than we'd been taught. For example, who knew that many of the Pilgrims had actually moved to the Netherlands for an extended period (12 years or so) before deciding to try their luck in the New World? Or that there were actually two ships (the other being called The Speedwell), but the 2nd one was left behind because it was deemed un-seaworthy? Or that the Pilgrims landed first, not at Plymouth, but on Cape Cod, only to be driven off by the Native Americans there? These facts and many others are revealed in this interesting film.
Four stars. A bit long (almost 140 minutes) but I found it worth the time!
Excellent.......2006-11-26
Excellent. Well Done. Even the Native American portrayal is very, very good. Only a few tiny details with the Native Clothing of the time is a bit off.
Too bad it was not ready before the holiday - most American Teachers really needed this so they can stop doing stupid Pilgrim/Indian Paegents and Plays. Hopefully many will use this in the future and correct the miss-information about the Mayflower and more.
As for the previous review: why do so many diss-pell how many Native Americans were here before and right at White Contact? They just can't give us any credit for anything - indcluding just being here in vast numbers. A Native population of 50,000,000 is not hard to believe when we know that the Aztec Empire alone was in the millions. It seems as though people keep forgetting how freaking big North America is as a continent. Really think about it and 50,000,000 people is not that much for a Continent the size of North America! Give us a break and give us the respect we so richly deserve.
This is television & The History Channel at their best........2006-11-25
It will be worth the dvd coming out the end of January. Shown now as Thanksgiving day fare. It is really an untold story. That is, the story of the struggles of the Separatist (Pilgims) in the 13 years before the Mayflower ever sailed. That was 1607, the year the first sucessful permanent colony was established in Virginia, named after King James. England was Protestant & The Anglican Church of England was the only lawful religion. James seemed to be quite pious in that regard. Not to the Separatist, who were loyal to the king in every way except religious. They printed tracts & even accused the King of popishness. This angered him & he harassed them until they left England for Holland. There they were tolerated but somewhat isolated & empoverished. This could not be a permanent solution & they decided that America might be option to consider. They needed a charter from King James who was basically angry with them but readily agree. He did not like them in Holland & in America they would be far away & out of his hair. Obtaining a ship, crew & provisions for the long trip was not cheap. Eventually they had to take non-believers with them who had money & for various reasons also wanted to leave. They had several fitful starts & even had to turn back several times. Finally they left England in late summer of 1620, a bad time to leave & even worse to land for it them got to America with winter bearing down & no chance to plant crops. They never got to Virginia. Instead they landed in Massachuetts Bay, outside of the area of their charter from the king. The weather prevented them from sailing out & around Cape Cod & south to Viginia. So there they stayed. Techically, they were no longer ruled by English law & the non-believers aboard knew this. They were not going to be governed by the rules that the separatist proposed once they landed. Both groups were of about equal size & what came about was the first great document in our history, The Mayflower Compact. Essentially a consensus document setting up a government with laws that all groups could live with. Quite remarkable. This document saved their lives. If they had split they surely would have perished. As it was, half the people died that winter. They pulled together & made it. These events were recorded for posterity by one of the original Pilgrims, William Bradford, who was there & later would become Govenor of the colony until shortly before his death in 1657. The reenactments for this documentary were quite well done. They choose a permenant site but not before fleeing & fighting some Native American tribes for stealing their seed corn & making friends with another tribe. A claim that there were over 50,000,000 people in North America at this time is hard to believe. But if true the number that died from disease & at the hands of Europeans over the next 250 years is truly a disaster eclipsing other examples of mass extinctions in history. By fall 1621 there was enough bounty to have a festival. According to this telling, the natives just dropped in bringing wild turkeys & both groups partied together for three days & nights. They ate all of the Pilgrims food. Later, they brought in supplies of venision, a high prestige gift of respect. The Pilgims were expected to do the same, that is drop in any time uninvited to eat & stay overnight. This version did not mention a story I had heard. The Pligims landed where they did because they were in a hurry to set up a brewery, having run through the ship's supply of beer. One thing that is important to point out is the Pilgrims did not come to America to practice religious freedom. They came to America for the freedom to practice their religion.

Every American knows that George Washington crossed the icy Delaware River in the War of Independence, if only from Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze's famous 1851 painting. The made-for-cable-TV historical drama The Crossing, scripted by Howard Fast from his novel, corrects at least one piece of historical invention--Washington did not stand and pose for the occasion of Leutze's portrait--but, more importantly, it frames the event in the real-life drama that made it a decisive moment of American history. Jeff Daniels makes a fine General George Washington, the quiet, dignified, and increasingly desperate leader of the volunteer Continental Army. By December 1776, six months after the Declaration of Independence was signed, the tired and hungry army had retreated to the far banks of the Delaware River, a mere fraction of the original 20,000-strong force. Knowing that defeat means the end of the revolution, Washington takes the offensive in a dangerous surprise attack that turns the tide of the war. Like the sprawling Civil War epic Gettysburg, The Crossing takes one incident of the Revolutionary War and digs into the whys and wherefores that make it vital history. It lacks scope and spectacle--major battles appear more like modest skirmishes--and lapses into patriotic fervor at times, but it brims with rich historical detail and comes alive with the stories of officers, soldiers, and a very human George Washington. --Sean Axmaker
Customer Reviews:
Daniels is a Great George Washington.......2007-05-25
Jeff Daniels is a very versatile actor, attested to in his role as George Washington. The next time I watch this it will immediately be followed by "Dumb and Dumber".
Inspiring depiction of the first decisive victory of Continental Army.......2007-04-15
This film was inspiring and informative, makes me proud to be an American and grateful to our courageous Continental Army under the command of Gen. George Washington. How much they sacrificed and suffered to win our freedom! This film should be required in the curriculum of all middle and high school students.
Patriotic Revival.......2007-02-27
Good films on the Revolution are hard to find. This one was packed with action and the drama of Washington's last roll of the dice when the odds were so severly stacked against him. The film is truly worthwhile, if only to further instill some patriotism in your kids and remind yourself what our ancestors went through to gain our independence. And Washington would be a hard character to play: unless your Jeff Daniels. He nails it and truly captured the heroic aspects of that great man.
"E" for effort - BUT NOT FOR KIDS.......2007-02-14
There are some historical inaccurracies in this film, to be sure. The Wikipedia entry for the movie has most of them. And like most movies dealing with any war, there are not enough men on the screen to portray the actual number of soldiers involved. Washington had more than 2000 troops when he went into Trenton, up against about the same number of Hessians. Of course, without computer-generated graphics, there's no way a made-for-television movie can portray that.
I have to question the casting of Jeff Daniels as Washington. I know Washington was a flesh and blood person, but somehow Daniels (or perhaps the script he had to work with) does not communicate the gravitas that must have personified Washington. This was a man chosen practically unanimously by the Continental Congress to lead the army. Daniels does not come across as that sort of person.
Although it is known that Washington had a temper, especially in extremis, most of the time Daniels' Washington comes across as merely petulant or even bitchy.
The dialogue between most of the characters seemed at times to be pretty anachronistic. American screenwriters should take a lesson from their British counterparts (Andrew Davies, for example) on how to write 18th Century dialogue that sounds authentic but not stilted or phoney.
Finally, THIS MOVIE IS NOT FOR CHILDREN. We watched it with our 7 and 9 year olds because they're studying the Revolution in school. We were dismayed by the bad language, sexual references and the over-the-top bloodletting. Why did the director think it a good idea to show closeups of bayoneting and swords going all the way through people? Showing it is one thing -- but closeups? C'mon! At least the DVD should have indicated what's in store so parents could be informed.
Surprizingly Good.......2007-01-16
I think Jeff Danials did a surprizingly good job of portraying the hard-to-cast Washington. I wish I had seen more of Glover's boat work getting the canon and horses across, but all in all, it had a good feel about it.

Description
During the Exodus, one of the most famous miracles of the Old Testament took place. More than 3000 years have passed since Moses led two million Israelites across the Red Sea and out of the bondage of Egypt. It is a topic that so fascinated Hollywood director Cecil B. DeMille that he made The Ten Commandments, twice. Steven Spielberg also took on the story in The Prince Of Egypt. Now The Exodus Revealed follows the footsteps of the children of Israel on an unforgettable journey of discovery. A journey that reveals physical evidence for the Exodus, including: the remains of 3800 year old Hebrew settlements in Egypt's Nile Delta; Egyptian records of the Israelites' bondage under Pharaoh; the precise route they may have followed to freedom; their crossing site on shore of the Red Sea; and the location of Mt. Sinai.

THE EXCITING, TRUE, EXODUS CROSSING!.......2007-04-09
DID YOU MISS IT? For 3500 YEARS the desert has held the secret of the true Exodus Crossing, the Route of the Exodus, the true Mount Sinai where God gave Moses the ten commandments. Now you can see the DVD of recent discovery with overwhelming evidence to the Biblical record. Here's the story. Every believer deserves to see these films.
Imagine following the true route of the Exodus, the Red Sea Crossing, and seeing the real Mount Sinai. This mountain is also known in Scripture as Mount Horeb where God visited Moses in Midian at the burning bush, where he brought the Hebrew nation out from Egypt, where God gave him the Ten Commandments, and the cave where Elijah saw God pass by. For 3500 years, man has not known the true mountain, but now in modern times, the route and the mountain have been rediscovered with overwhelming evidence, as well as following the exact descriptions of the words of the Bible.
GOD taught us something at this true Exodus Crossing. There are times in our lives when we seem to be caught in the east with our backs to the Red Sea, YAM-SUPH, on a beach called NUWEIBA. And Pharaoh's army of 600 war chariots is attacking from the west down the eighteen mile gorge with 1500 foot cliffs. Indeed, they've arrived at the Mouth of the Gorge, PI HAHIROTH, facing us. And our whole situation seems incredibly hopeless. There is only one thing to do. Surrender the situation to God and see his plan unfold.
Moses parted the Reed Sea.......2007-03-03
Check the Hebrew [Yam Suf]is the Reed Sea: Meaning fresh water where reeds grow. Moses did not get that far with the children of Israel, he would have went through the wilderness long before reaching the Red Sea that is more the 120 miles from Goshen too far to travel in the time mentioned in the Bible. Moses would have parted one of the Sea of Reeds not the Red Sea as it has been mistranslated into the English Bible.
Not what we thought.......2007-02-23
Pretty boring. We were expecting a movie and ended up with a documentary.
A good case on were the read see crossing are. .......2007-02-07
Since I have intrested in this hypothesis for several years I find the film a good presentation of the material that are at hand rigth know. It builds upp a strong case for the probability that the read see crossing are in the Aqaba gulf and mount Sinai are in Arabia. But it begins with the question if there ever has been an exodus.
But you are left with questions like: Are there other interpretations of the findings that are said to prove that there has been a yewish setelment in Egypt? What about the usual dating of the conquest of Canan in 1250 BC? (This theory follows the biblical dating wih is about 1450.) A one hour movie can not debate all these questions but if you do not have any knowledge before you can draw the conclusion that it is more simple than it is. A hint of these problems would have made the film better.
Martin from Sweden
evidence backed by the bible.......2007-01-12
I liked the way the evidence was prepared and presented. If viewed with open mind and a humbled heart you can gain much insight of the Exodus and crossing of the Red Sea.

Final thoughts:
There are a few moments in everyone's life, certainly in public lives, that can define a person...
For those of us old enough to remember the Reagan presidency, seeing the clips again in the wake of his death makes it seem like those events happened just yesterday, or last week. The voice, the expressions, are all so familiar. But for a large percentage of people, these events might as well have happened fifty years ago, if not more. They are part of the distant past. President Reagan is a name, and not much more. President Gorbachev is another name, and not much more. So how can we remember these two men who had such a huge impact on their country?
Reagan and Gorbachev worked together to tear down the Berlin Wall and to steer their superpower nations away from nuclear confrontation...
Share History With Your Gradeschooler........2006-10-29
Watch this film with your child or grandchild and be prepared to answer questions about this historical time period. My children enjoyed this film years ago and it is now a pleasure to share it with my grandkids. Plenty of action and suspense to keep their interest and I always watch it with them the first time or two, to help them understand what is happening and why.

A Cold War classic from Disney!.......2004-12-10
This is the true story of one of the greatest escapes of the 20th century! The year is 1979. The Strelzyk and Wetzel families desperately want to leave Communist-controlled East Germany so they decide to build a huge hot-air balloon to carry them over to West Germany. Not only is it risky relying on a balloon to carry two families, they also have to avoid East German police. This is a well-crafted Disney film that the whole family will enjoy. The cast includes John Hurt, Jane Alexander, and a then-unknown Beau Bridges. Although I'm very happy to own this on dvd, this is a bare-bones dvd as far as special features go. At least the sound quality is better than my old vhs copy. Still, this is a very important and inspiring story that everyone should know about and I highly recommend this movie to people of all ages.

"To understand the place, you have to listen to the music it plays".......2007-04-12
German-born Turkish director Faith Akin captures in his film the endless variety of the different styles in music and songs in Istanbul, a city that is a bridge between East and West, a city that is uniquely located on both sides of the Bosporus, in Europe and in Asia. Kurdish dirges represented by Aynur, who performs her own brand of Kurdish gospel music, passionate and melodic. We are introduced to Romany instrumentals, to Orhan Gencebay, who has been called the Elvis of Arabesque music - sounds of music are heard everywhere in the city as Faith Akin takes us into underground clubs, to the street performers, and to recording sessions. German bassist Alexander Hacke who comes to Istanbul to play and to learn about Turkish music quotes Confucius, "To understand the place, you have to listen to the music it plays". Akin's fine documentary does just that - gives us 90 minutes of music that helps to cross the bridges. For me, watching the movie was especially interesting because I recently visited Istanbul as a part of my vacation and spent four days there. The city fascinated me by its images, colors, crowds, vibrancy and visual beauty. Now, I can add the sounds of music to the ever-changing portrait of Istanbul
Istanbul Experience Without Being There.......2007-03-29
This movie was recommended to me by a friend. I delayed watching it for a while since I was not sure about what I would find. Watching it, I witnessed an adventurous collection of interviews, jam sessions and of course music. The adventure that I am referring is to the diverse variety of individuals and styles represented in the movie. I was stunned by some of what I saw but enjoyed every bit.
Most of the dialogue is in Turkish which is a gift for native speakers. The people, the places and the music all work together in creating a mood that is hard to describe. I liked it very much.
An unexpected surprize is the session with Sezen Aksu. She is defient, confident and outright amazing in her mastery of her art.
The last session, filmed on a boat at sunset on the Bosphorus is a gem.
Amazing !!! .......2007-01-12
This is a great documentary film about music and musicians in Istanbul. All different kinds of music. Not just traditional but pop, rock, jazz, hip-hop, classical, vocals, instrumental..... and many different kinds of instruments too. Istanbul is an interesting place. It has western and eastern influence. This film is quite different from the image that you see on the cover. So, forget about the picture of the cover and just try watching. It is COOL.
Seattle
fascinating musical portrait of Istanbul.......2006-10-13
Having been involved in preparing the soundtrack for Fatih Akin's film "Head-On" (which I highly recommend, though if you're reading this review, you probably already know it), the bass player for the legendary German rock band Einstürzende Neubauten came back to Istanbul to further explore contemporary Turkish music, which he'd gotten a taste of and liked. The result is a fascinating musical portrait of Istanbul, including gypsy music, rap (I'm no expert, but Ceza may be doing the most interesting hip-hop ever recorded outside the US), a Canadian woman (Brenna MacGrimmon) who had fallen in love with old Istanbul whorehouse ballads and learned to sing them in flawless Turkish, Turkey's superstar Sezen Aksu, the "godfather" of "Arabesque" Orhan Gencebay, as well as Kurdish, Sufi, and street musicians. For my money, this is at least as good as "The Buena Vista Social Club" and has the potential to do for Turkish music what that film did for Cuban music, given the right marketing. And by the way, the soundtrack is also available on CD.
I'd like to take the opportunity to plug some other Turkish work that I think would be interesting for fans of "Crossing the Bridge" but is not available on Amazon. I was surprised and disappointed to see that two films ("Vizontele" and its sequel "Vizontele Tuuba") by one of Turkey's leading directors and comic actors, Yilmaz Erdogan, are not available on Amazon or Barnes & Noble. These wonderful films, critically acclaimed outside Turkey, are readily available with subtitles in Turkey, and I can't understand why they're not available here. The same goes for the soundtracks to those films and other CDs by the group Kardes Türküler, one of the best groups performing music based on the folk traditions of various Anatolian peoples (including Turks, Kurds, Armenians, Georgians, and others). Somebody should do something about this - this is wonderful stuff that certainly deserves a wide audience outside Turkey.

Sean Penn wrote and directed this character-driven drama about a divorced couple (Jack Nicholson and Anjelica Huston) whose relationship never recovered following the death of their daughter at the hands of a drunk driver (David Morse). When the latter's character, a deeply regretful and changed man, gets out of jail, Nicholson, as the vengeful dad, decides to go after him. As a director, Penn is not so good with fluid storytelling and camera clichés, but he is amazing as an actor's director. The onscreen reteaming of former real-life lovers Nicholson and Huston is more than just a voyeuristic exercise: Penn ingeniously uses the duo's palpable friction to bring an often horrifying reality to the pain of a dead relationship. --Tom Keogh

Grieving dad gets a little twisted........2005-09-12
The Crossing Guard DVD version great on screen, makes good use of entire screen...
This one is a little different, a little twisted..dark. A grieving dad loses sight of reality because of his grief...In the end it's his little girls killer who makes him face it..
The dad is the bad guy, the killer is the unfortunate good guy, but you'll connect with them both...Emotional, especially if you're a parent..Good watch..
Wow! I, For One, Was Surprised.......2005-07-29
Sean Penn (writing/directing duties and a bit more, but not acting) and Jack Nicholson team up for "The Crossing Guard" -- a surprisingly touching film that will stick with any viewer for quite some time. Here's the plot:
(The following contains some spoilers to the storyline, as it is a summarization of most of the film)
The Crossing Guard persists in it's somber mood almost entirely throughout. The story is a seemingly hopeless one. Freddy (Nicholson) plays a father who lost his daughter several years back, and as a result also lost his marriage. He's never even visited his daughter's grave. In short, his life is a wreck. Regardless, he refuses to let the past get a hold of him. He continues the lies and bitterness through the years, trying to push away the pain and live a normal life. Yet when he gets news of an inmate being released, things only get worse. You see, the inmate is John Booth -- the man who accidently killed Freddy's little girl by means of drunk driving. Freddy decides with practically no debate (hell, he's had years of anger to support the decision) that he is going to kill Booth. He tracks down the man (who isn't too far anyway) and after an awkward misfortune (I'll leave that near-humorous surprise for your own discovery) that prevents him from murdering Booth right away, he gives Booth three days to live. Then, after the three days are up, he's coming for him. John Booth is a bit confusing because he insists he won't call the police, and doesn't seem a bit shaken by the idea of this man killing him. He seems more sad and empty than anything. He, too, has lived a life of inner torment as a result of the accident -- although Freddy refuses to have any consideration to such things, only focusing on his blind anger. Now begins the majority of the movie: the three days in which one man awaits his death and another awaits a cold taste of revenge. This is what is so interesting about the film. We get to see the view from both ends. We follow both charaters in their mixed up and broken lives through what must be their last days. The viewer becomes almost as sad and confused as the characters. John Booth has always been (and still remains) torn apart by the accident with the little girl. He feels almost like he deserves it. He constantly struggles to find way to not only cope, but understand it all. Freddy remains ruthless and bitter about everything, only looking forward to what he feels he must do. Both men are faced with the assumptions of everyone else in their life that all is well. They know their upcoming destiny, but no one else does. These people oblivious to the madness unfolding right before them certainly seem small an unappreciative compared to the situation Freddy and John are faced with. Here, I feel Penn tried to stress how some of the "important" things in life are really quite insignificant. The world for both men is falling apart. As the day comes to do the deed, Freddy finds himself as an emotional wreck. He reunites with his ex-wife in a restaurant in need of a discusion after his conscience gets to him. She begins to see how the man who she thought had disapeared after the death of their daughter is still deep inside Freddy somewhere. But as fragile as the situation is, he snaps and storms out. Tonight is the night he must kill John Booth. But, on the way over, he is stopped for drunk driving. The officers want to take him in. Of course, this would be major damage to his plan, so he grabs his pistol and runs. After shaking the cops off his tail, he finally arrives at his destination: Booth's home. He is prepared to kill. But through yet another string of peculiar events, he -- with the assistance of the man he vowed to hate forever -- finds the higher reason for it all behind the tragedy. I'm not going to give this ending away, but I can assure you it is quite heart-warming and worth the wait.
The Crossing Guard is a web of pain and nihilism that life can sometimes pin on someone. And by the end, it all makes sense. Anger, apathy, love, hurt, recovery, heart-break and doing what is right are just a few examples of what this film has managed to squeeze into two hours. A truly remarkable piece. A must see for any fan of drama movies.
A great film that evokes powerful emotion with incredible acting.......2005-07-28
This film shows what a great script and amazing actors can pull off. Penn does an amazing job pulling everything together to project a general feeling of despair. Few films send such a powerful emotion.
David Morse, who I believe makes every movie his is in (Green Mile, Contact, Hearts in Atlantis) much better, puts in an amazing performance as someone whose guilt is unshakable.
Jack of course is a living legend, but this is a performance that really transcends the typical greatness we have come to expect. He really makes you feel a piece of the powerful grief he lives with, and somehow makes you laugh.
Angelica Houston is just about the only actress I have seen steal a scene from someone like Nicholson with such subtlety. One of my favorite scenes is Nicholson and Houston in the dinner. At the conclusion, you can almost feel the door slam on their relationship.
And Robin Wright Penn gives the best performance of her career. Obviously the man and wife relationship helped Penn know how to best play her strengths. The scene when Morse confesses his worst secrets to Wright is amazing. She has few lines, but really shows volumes in her reaction.
I recently watched The Woodsman and felt that Sedgwick also did an amazing job in the same type of scene, but yet went in a completely different direction.
This film is often compared to The Pledge, and rightfully so. In my opinion though, The Crossing Guard is by far a better film. The fact that Penn had to wait until Mystic River to get his Oscar credit is a shame. This movie was overlooked.
Magnificent and touching.......2005-07-07
I can't believe that someone turned this movie off after 40 minutes!! The end of the movie congeals the message and allows you to really feel a deep emotional experience. I was touched to tears and was very impressed with the amount of heart that Sean Penn was able to convey with this story. We can all relate on some level, because it is about touching the depth of human experience. I highly applaud the story line, and the magnificent acting of these amazingly talented actors and actresses. I would recommend this movie to anyone, and can't believe I hadn't heard about it before finding it in the video store.
Sean Penn and Nicholson make a great team.......2005-02-25
Penn is amazing what what he put to script here
Nicholson or Jack Nicholson is brilliant as his role
the movie touches you , scares you, shocks you, keeps you guessing a little about what will happen at the end. but overall a truly moving movie. have it on dvd and it never let me down. it never has and never will. the crossing guard is truly a gem like Chinatown with Nicholson in it. I could watch this movie again and again and again. Nicholson really shines in this role for a movie. and the cast is innovative and picked out quite well :)

Product Description
Sophia Loren, Richard Harris, Ava Gardner, Burt Lancaster, Martin Sheen, O.J. Simpson, Lee Strasberg, Ingrid Thulin and John Phillip Law star in this terrifying odyssey of a plague-infested train, speeding across Europe to the Cassandra Crossing and death.
When a plague-infested terrorist, fleeing from the police, exposes the 1,000 riders of the Geneva to Stockholm Express, Colonel MacKenzie (Lancaster) is called in to handle the situation. He locates a doctor aboard the train, Jonathan Chamberlain (Harris) who, with his wife (Loren), finds the fugitive. They attempt to transfer him to a hovering helicopter, but fail, and the terrorist dies. To prevent the spread of the plague. Colonel MacKenzie directs the train to the Cassandra Crossing where it will plunge to oblivion, killing all aboard. At Nuremberg, the train is pumped with oxygen and the stricken passengers begin to recover. Dr. Chamberlain argues that they be spared, but Colonel MacKenzie refuses, and as the train rushes toward the collapsing Cassandra Crossing bridge. Chamberlain struggles to disconnect the cars and save the passengers from their appointment with doom.

Second class entertainment at its best!.......2006-09-10
Sometimes you want nothing more than to turn your brain off and settle down to a slice of Europudding. Lew Grade and Carlo Ponti's Anglo-Italian co-production The Cassandra Crossing is a perfect example. Full of fattening but empty calories and boasting an Irish, Italian, American, German and anybody else who wasn't busy that month cast of fading stars, a Greek director and shot in Switzerland and France with the profits from The Muppet Show, it's a prime example of that much maligned genre, the conspiracy-disease-disaster-train-action-thriller. Richard Harris and the co-producer's missus Sophia Loren take the leads as the glamorous twice-divorced couple - he conveniently a doctor, she a pulp novelist - who find themselves on the same train as Martin Sheen's drug smuggling toyboy gigolo mountain climber (seen in one surreal moment standing on his head on a bed wearing only Y-fronts while Ava Gardner applauds), O.J. Simpson's gun-toting not-really-a-priest (and yes, he does go down), Lee Strasberg's concentration camp survivor muttering "I can't go back to Poland" (some of my relatives feel the same, Lee), Lionel Stander's loveable conductor (yes, he's called Max and he looks after them), the then-Mrs Harris, Ann Turkel as a free-spirited hippie chick who can't sing (or do much about her boyfriend's premature ejaculation problem either for that matter), and, critically, Lou Castel's sweaty Swedish terrorist (described in one memorable exchange as a "sweaty pervert"). The reason he's sweating is he's got a nasty strain of Pneumonic Plague that the Americans were planning on destroying (honest) in Geneva before he and his ill-fated pal tried to blow up the lab.
While Ingrid Thulin's humanitarian doctor tries to find a way of saving the passengers and Burt Lancaster's American general tries to find a more permanent containment solution involving a rickety bridge en route to a disused WW2 Polish `isolation' camp ("It's a Warsaw Pact country but we can't do anything about that") in one of those flashing light control rooms with minimalist glass maps (you can just imagine them exchanging anecdotes about the days when they were working with Visconti inbetween takes), it's up to Richard Harris to save the day. Boy, are those passengers in trouble - he's such a responsible doctor that when he sees a sweaty Castel panting and heaving over a bowl of rice pudding he doesn't even tell the nun sitting opposite him in the dining car that she might want to try the trifle instead, so we know that a lot of the passengers aren't going to make it. Oh, did I mention the `cute' little girl? Alida Valli's governess? John Phillip Law's `sinister' military aide?
There's an enjoyably overwrought Jerry Goldsmith score (the only one to include an entire cue used in a previous score, in this case a reorchestrated version of 'Night Attack' from Islands in the Stream), some better than expected production values and worse than expected back-projection and one real howler of a continuity goof as the locomotive changes type two-thirds through the film. But most of all, it's just demented enough in its straight-faced way to be great fun if you're in the right mood. Director George Pan Cosmatos may have been a hack, but he was a very proficient one, as an extremely well executed and impressively edited opening raid on the World Health Organisation - sorry, International Health Organization's headquarters demonstrates. It also has some genuinely impressive camerawork (including a couple of shots I still can't work out how they got) and what is easily the best transfer of a sick Basset hound from a moving train to a helicopter before the train hits a tunnel action setpiece in screen history. Now THAT'S entertainment!
First Rate Thriller.......2006-04-29
What distinguishes "The Cassandra Crossing" from latter day thrillers is that it emphasizes story and characterization over pyrotechnics. The film moves along crisply with enough twists to keep you on the edge of your seat. The imperiled passengers are full-bodied characters whose fate you actually care about. There were many disaster films from the seventies that were more concerned about body counts(i.e. which celebrity would bite the dust) that they bordered on exploitation. "Cassandra Crossing" elevates the genre and makes a case for it's respectability.
One of the better 70's era disaster films.......2002-06-17
One of the better films amoung the 1970's disaster movie genre; centering around a European train infected with a contagious virus. Interesting film to compare to more recent fare such as Outbreak.
Amoung the "all-star" cast few actually qualilfy, with only Richard Harris and Sophie Loren adding genunie star power; while Burt Lanchaster basically just phones in his performance. Also seeing O.J. Simpson as an INTERPOL officer gunning down terrorists in a priest uniform is more then jarring. The direction is taut and the Jerry Goldsmith score is strong as always. Despite its cheesy moments (the hippies singing in the train car) its a good watch.
The DVD itself is nice deal for [$], although Artisian's presentation doesn't rank as high as some of its other older catalog film. Sadly its presented in fullscreen which is a major mark against it and there isn't even a trailer to accompany it. Oddly enough it sports motion menus which surprised me. The transfer isn't anywhere near reference quality but its watchable with a few spots where the film goes soft. The mono soundtrack isn't strong at all and the dreaded mono hiss is audible if you're using your sorround system.
If you're a fan of the movie its hard to turn down at a bargain price, otherwise rent it.

Customer Reviews:
Good movie..........2003-01-08
A great coming of age movie set in 1975 detroit. 3 high school friends are now graduated with uncertain futures. None went to college and none have decent jobs so they are emotionally caught between adulthood and the high school mentality of living at home. Symbolic of this are the high school letter jackets that two of the friends still wear. Stephen baldwin plays a guy who is losing his identity. He was cool in high school but now as an adult he is just another guy. Mort is the most intellectual and introspective of the three but he knows that he needs to go to college to realize his dream of being a writer. A dream that doesn't recieve much support from his friends. In fact he never shares a scholarship notice from central michigan university with them.
Early in the movie they encounter a drug dealer who offers them $9,000 to run some hashish from canada to the usa. Hence the name of the movie because of the bridge that runs between detroit and windsor ontario. The guys can't help but seriously consider that move. They need the money of course but they need a sense of identity even more. Thankfully the movie doesn't dwell too much on this one event but i'm surprised that these guys never once consider the morality of the action just the potential consequences to them. Other mini sub plots take form in the film of course. Their relationship with uncaring parents and romance. There are the cliche stuck up high school class mates who are now in college. One laughable character is a guy who smugly proclaims that he is majoring in pre law. Any one can major in that and most never go to law school.
Things heat up when the fellas decide finally to do the drug run. They deliver this atache filled with money to some really bad dudes in a farm house and realize they have bit off more than they can chew. Instead of hash they are expected to carry heroin across the border and they are lucky to be alive. One of them got beat up really bad. The scenes on the bridge are a bit drawn out but they all eventually decide to leave the car and the heroin and just cross to detroit on foot. This responsible move indicates a crossing over into adulthood and they end up tossing those high school letter jackets into the detroit river.
You will be involved enough in the movie to wonder what happens to these guys in the next ten years. Will mort get that degree and become a writer after all? It works. There is one major problem with the plot. These guys took a lot of money to get drugs in canada and bring them back to the us. What is a drug dealer going to do when he doesn't get the drugs or his money back? we will never know.
The acting is solid and i actually found myself liking stephen balwin's performance. A very good movie but the hole in the plot keeps it from being a 5* film.

An excellent way to reminisce.......2003-01-07
Coming of age movie with emphasis on the results of the decisions we make. Applies to all of us who were indecisive about the future after high school. A good movie with which to reminisce on a cold night.
My favorite "CTB" Character..........2002-05-31
I loved this movie, simply due to one certain character...
"High School Senior #3", portrayed by WWE Superstar Sean "XPac"
Waltman. This poor guy really took a pounding from Josh Charles'
& Stephan Baldwin's characters. I'd like to see a sequel to this film w/the main character being HSS#3. Give the dude some respect...he's been pushed around long enough!!
Great Coming-of-Age movie set in Detroit.......1999-11-16
Anyone who grew up in Detroit in the 70's will recognize most of the characters in this movie. This is the story of recent high school graduates who didn't pursue college who are in that void where they are too old to be kids but haven't become responsible adults yet. Their parents still support them. Their time is their own. They fumble around applying their high school values but essentially doing nothing until they happen upon a way to make some big, quick cash, smuggling hashish into the USA. When they get to the pick-up though they find out that the job is actually heroin. (Nicholas Cage is the heroin dealer.) In the process of deciding what to do, and what happens to them when they balk, they discover a lot about themselves and become real adults. Not to ruin the ending but watch the symbolism of the high school varsity jackets.
Shot on location in Detroit and Canada, if you're a suburban Detroiter this is wonderfully nostalgic too.
A dramatic, charasmatic film, brilliantly directed!.......1999-01-26
This is a magnificant story of three young men journeying to Windsor, Canada to attempt to smuggle hashish Back to Detroit. What is so powerful about this movie is the fact the it ignores the essence of Windsor, (fully nude strip clubs and all out gambling) and focuses directly on the situation at hand. It also prepares the viewer for a powerful sequel based on a true story of a young man, violently gay, trying to establish himself as a functional heterosexual by journeying to the strip clubs of Windsor in the hope he will be attracted to the opposite sex. The role is so convincingly played by Dave Painter, one must wonder if it is actually his life story. Look for the sequel, if JeffFey productions can budget it, to hit theaters in the year 2000. Special Mention must also be given to that of Jim Frazier, who plays Painter's oddly queer sidekick and partner. Frazier is extremely mellow in his role, yet wears clothes and glasses that gives the viewer the idea he made be a pedofile or serial killer.- JT 1/26/99
