Disney has mined Rudyard Kipling's Mowgli stories twice, but it has never topped this elegant, lush classic by the British Korda brothers. Producer Alexander Korda brought director Zoltan and designer Vincent to California, where they used Hollywood's resources to create a storybook India of verdant jungles, beautiful lagoons, and modest peasant villages. Sabu plays Mowgli, the man-cub raised by wolves and schooled in the jungle who returns to civilization as a young man. When greedy villagers discover that he knows of a hidden treasure, they turn the town against him and follow him to the ruins of an ancient palace (a magnificent, crumbling temple of glowing blue stone overrun with vines and vegetation). Sabu gives a vital, energetic performance, leaping and climbing like he was born to the wild and innocent of corruption and fear that infects the village. As the treasure hunters turn on one another and resort to murder for the prize they all desire, the film gets darker and fiercer than Disney ever dared in its remakes. It's still the most glorious of all versions, a grandly realized epic vision with a sense of wonder and a magnificent fantasy landscape of deep, rich colors, like a painting come to life. Joseph Calleia plays the greedy villain with his usual conniving flair. Miklós Rósza wrote the gorgeous score. Be wary of inferior video copies: the film has fallen into the public domain and is available in a proliferation of substandard prints. --Sean Axmaker

Description

One of the most popular Disney films ever, THE JUNGLE BOOK is a song-filled celebration of friendship, fun, and adventure set in a lush and colorful world. Inspired by Rudyard Kipling's "Mowgli" stories, Disney's 19th animated masterpiece was the last animated feature that had Walt Disney's personal touch. The jubilant adventure begins when Mowgli, a little boy raised by wolves, is urged by his friend Bagheera, a wise old panther, to seek safety in the man village. Feeling very much at home in the jungle, Mowgli resists and runs off. Much to Bagheera's dismay, Mowgli meets a new friend with a happy-go-lucky philosophy of life -- Baloo the Bear, a lovable "jungle bum." Together, the three buddies find the journey back to civilization anything but civilized! They encounter a crazy orangutan, the hypnotic and sly snake Kaa, and the menacing Shere Khan! Fully restored for this 30th anniversary edition, this enduring classic swings with jazzy toe-tapping music, including the Academy Award(R)-nominated "The Bare Necessities," and the freewheeling "I Wan'na Be Like You"! A thrilling story for all ages, THE JUNGLE BOOK is an absolute necessity for your video collection.

According to dvdtimes, extras on this platinum edition will include:

Disney's 1967 animated feature seems even more entertaining now than it did upon first release, with a hall-of-fame vocal performance by Phil Harris as Baloo, the genial bear friend of feral child Mowgli. Based on fiction by Rudyard Kipling, the film goes its own way as Disney animation will, but the strong characters and smart casting (George Sanders as the villainous tiger, Shere Khan) make it one of the studio's stronger feature-length cartoons. Songs include "The Bare Necessities" and "Trust in Me." --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Cute Characters, Great Songs and Sweet Story Make this a Disney Classic .......2007-02-04

Though it diverges wildly from the the original story by Rudyard Kipling Disney's THE JUNGLE BOOK is one of the mouse's best classic animated musical movies. The voice actors are excellent and the songs are clever, memorable and move the story forward. There is enough action and humor for adults to enjoy the movie and though there are villains they are not too scary for the little ones. All ends happily though bittersweetly.

5 out of 5 stars Still love this movie..........2007-01-12

My Daddy took me to see this movie when I was a small child. This movie has been a lasting and happy memory of my childhood, so I was thrilled when my grandson fell in love with it also. I had a VHS version of the movie and when it was destroyed I panicked because Disney had already stopped production of it. After checking EVERYWHERE I finally located the movie with Amazon.com as my middleman. I ordered the CD version, which was not cheap, but I got it at the best price through Amazon.
My grandson is singing with the movie again and happy. This movie is timeless and well worth the price paid.

Sophisticated to a point, this well-executed wolf-man tale works due to its clever setting and enormous star power. We all know Jack Nicholson can go nuts, but the script makes his character aware of his changes, sometimes for the better, early on. The setting, a publishing house in the middle of a takeover, gives the characters dramatic life before the horror elements kicks in. A senior editor about to get the boot, Nicholson's character becomes a new man after being bitten by a wolf. He takes on challenges at work, lives a more robust life, and attracts a new love. But will his newfound energy consume him? Director Mike Nichols keeps the action alive in the first half, but the film peters out at the end with cheap theatrics and the overuse of slow motion. Michelle Pfeiffer has little to do as simply the love interest with a grittier than average personality. Better is James Spader as a smarmy colleague. Nicholson is in fine form, relying on his keen gift to spark interest (a twitch of the head, a look in the eyes), instead of heavy doses of movie makeup. Giuseppe Rotunno's sweeping camerawork sets the mood quite well. Easy to recommend, with the added feature it's hardly gratuitous. --Doug Thomas

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Lacks Bite........2007-06-11

This movie could have been a contender. From the pitch perfect casting of Jack Nicholson in the title role of the wolfman to the superb and moody cinematography of Giuseppe Rotunno, this glossy and well mounted old style Hollywood production should have delivered in spades. And, thats the problem - it should have.

The story is a canny one. Nicholson stars as Wil Randall, a worn down book publisher working in the cut-throat industry of corporate publishing. His smug boss Christopher Plummer is ready to ship him off to a middle european assignment that nobody wants and he is constantly hounded by a younger co-worker (hammed up to-the-hilt by James Spader) for his job. Oh yeah, his wife is also cheating on him behind his back. Its all downhill for Randall, who is the wrong side of 40, tired and pschologically ready for the scrap heap. His downtrodden persona is perfectly presented by Nicholson, as from the opening sequences, we are totally aware of the nauseating corporate politics that revolve around him on a daily basis, and its at this point where the movie soars. The backstabbing, the corporate shenanigans and the general day-to-day grind that every working stiff has to endure - its all here. Only for Nicholson, he's got another problem: He's been attacked by a wolf. I know. Bear with me.

The wolf attack is slight and only used to open up the picture - almost matter of fact. From this point on, Nicholson begins to display heightened senses, acute hearing, enhanced smell and incredible agility - all the hallmarks of a man 20 years younger than his advancing years. This new found lust for life gives Jack not only a boost, but the movie kicks up a gear too (and reminds me of Jeff Goldblum coming to terms with his transformation in "The Fly"), becoming smart, funny and fast moving. However, as the wolfman's curse begins to take hold on Jack, so does the scriptwriters' inabilty to keep this hokey concept afloat.

The problems arise when Michele Pfieffer turns up. Her character is an obviously redemptive foil for Jack, and after her initial "hard faced chick" routine, she spends the rest of the picture running from wolfmen or screaming at various attacks, etc. Its as if the screenwriter did have an initial idea of what he wanted to do with her character - making her strong, forceful, quick witted and three dimensional. However, during the course of the film, she is lost amidst a hodge-podge of juevenile wolf attacks and overt "skirt and high heels" moments. Most of these with occur with James Spader. Who seems to think he is in a children's pantomime and not a summer event movie - his over-the-top werewolf act makes Nicholson seem positively subdued in comparison, and he almost blows the good work that has been done before in the proceeding hour.

The fault could lie at many feet. Director Mike Nichols isn't exactly known for genre movies, and this movie does works best as a character builder (ie, the first half) and at this point, the film excels. However, he seems unsure as to how far to go with the horror aspect, and ultimately satisfies neither the genre savvy summer audience or the mature cinema goer (which this film so desperately wants to be in with) - the movie starts out as a steak, but ultimately leaves as a burger. Jim Harrison and Wesley Stricks' script starts out smart, sassy and funny but quickly descends into farce and mediocrity. Which is a shame as the production is well mounted, with an excellent autumn hued look. The score is great, too - obviously, created to give a grand, 1930s universal horror feel and Nicholson is superb in the lead role. Even though Pfeiffer and Spader aren't as effective in their respective roles, I fear that is more to do with a lacklustre script than their talents (as both are excellent in their own right. Spader is great in "Sex, Lies & Videotape", "Secretary" and "Crash"). All in all, a decent attempt that seems to have been held back by a large studio budget, unsure direction and an identity crisis as to who it wishes to speak to. Like most movies of today, it wants its have its cake and eat it by appealing to all demographics, but unlike something like "An American Werewolf in London" which mixes its blend of horror, comedy, romance and drama into a headier brew, "Wolf" only manages to produce a movie that is `nearly there'.

DVD presentation is sharp, with no extras. Only a trailer. The movie is recommended, but don't expect a wild ride. Just an easy-going and minor entry in the werewolf subgenre.

5 out of 5 stars Jack the big bad wolf has deffently marked his territory in Hollywood!.......2007-06-05

This movie is awesome, it's like a roller Coster ride from start to finish. I really liked how he looked as the new wolfman for a new up to date version. James Spader goes through some changes as well? That's the best part, I am not going to give away. This movie takes the whole werewolf legend to a new level. It also gives you a good reference to how we as individuals have to deal with in everyday life situations, dealing with work and relationships in our personal lives, and how some people can be very diseveing and somethings you thought you knew them but you were wrong, and when things were going right until an unexcpected change in your life changes everything. That's what Nicholson's character as a well mannered book editor named Will Randle. He has a good head on his shoulders untill after driving home one night from a business trip changes his whole life forever. That's all I am going to tell you for now. The rest is for you to watch for yourselves. This is a good thinking movie as well as a pychologic thriller. It's a good werewolf movie without so much blood but has a well deserved written story line. It's got it twist and turns. Trust me this movie is worth seeing over and over. Then you will be howling all night...

4 out of 5 stars JACK MAKES WOLF GREAT WHEN IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AN OTHERWISE ABYSMALLY AVERAGE MOVIE INTO.......2007-04-16

Wolf has a movie of the week quality to it. The characters are very one demensional and to say Jack's immense talents were woefully under used in WOLF is the kind of understatment to boggle the minds of sick and sane alike. That said Wolf is an enjoyable movie, with way too little werewolf action for my heart. The werewolf scenes were all too breif. The lighting was so bad in Wolf because, better lighting would have revealed the dime store special effects and prostetics used in the filming.

Jack makes this movie work because, he is convincing as a lycanthrope. There is something that creeps you out about Jack being a werewolf that he invests in the character just enough to make you buy in to the paper thin plot of WOLF! I won't lie. I enjoyed WOLF immensely which is why I gave it 4 stars. I know many of my Lycanthope loving purest's pan the movie for being so average and in some ways sub-par and I hear you brothers and sisters but. I have seen some far worse werewolf movies than this one. Wolves of Wall Streel leaps right to mind for one of the worst werewolf films.

WOLF is not bad. WOLF was so refreshing because it protrayed a werewolf as a force of good for once and that earned it four stars from my amazon.com den. Wolf keeps the Werewolf genre' alive and does so with more class than most these days. I added WOLF to my growing werewolf collection a long time ago and never regretted it for a moment.

5 out of 5 stars Nicholson at his funnest.......2007-03-09

How can you compare Jack's over the top performance as a mild mannered writer to the leg-pissing territorial scene with Spader in the bathroom. Smart, sexy and at times funny, this is one that has aged well, and brings remnants of the old Jack, before he became a parody of himself

5 out of 5 stars Five Star Phantom.......2007-02-18

I'm a big Phantom fan so I may be biased but I thought this was great stuff. This took me back to my childhood. I saw the serial when I was a kid in the fifties and it's still great over 50 years later. They could have made his costume a bit better but apart from that a great adventure. My teenage kids loved this too, which is saying something.

5 out of 5 stars Bringing back childhood memories.......2007-01-04

Really enjoyed this serial. I'm 56, and can still remember going to the Pitt theatre on saturday mornings to catch the serials. Watching the Phantom brings back a time before America lost it's commom sense and the phrase "politically correct" wasn't heard of.

4 out of 5 stars the phantom.......2006-11-07

MOVIE WAS MADE FROM A GOOD COPY.PICTURE WAS VERY CLEAR AND CLEAN.THE STORY FOLLOWS THE ORIGINAL PREMISE VERY CLOSELY.ALL IN ALL IT'S A FUN SERIAL TO WATCH.

3 out of 5 stars Fast-paced and watchable.......2006-08-08

I grew up reading Phantom cartoons. This video series shows a different Phantom. First, there is no horse named Hero. Phantom of this video is not as strong as in the cartoon. However, these are not major issues for me.

I had a huge problem with the Professor. He does not care about his fellow men, only interested in his pursuit of the Zoloz ruins. I was truly disgusted to hear him say that the wealth of the Zoloz tribes belongs to his sponsor University! What nonsense! Even Phantom was no better. He realized that the jewels in his skull cave are the treasures of the Zoloz, but did not consider returning them to the tribes! In my dictionary, this is thievery.

5 out of 5 stars The Ghost Who Walks.......2006-01-09

This is based on Lee Falk's popular comic strip, "The Phantom," who was known as "The Ghost Who Walks," in purple tights yet. Columbia usually had independent producers do its serials but this one was actually produced by Columbia, taking advantage of the studio's extensive facilities. In a world where the best serials were made by Republic, Columbia was second-best. This certainly one of their very best.

Tom Tyler ("Adventures of Captain Marvel") is an excellent Phantom, and B. Reeves "Breezy" Eason, formerly with Republic, did a great job of directing. Frank Shannon must have matured as an actor, because he's much better here than in the Flash Gordon series. Jeanne Bates signed with Columbia in 1942, and was probably best known to aficionados of horror flicks. She had a long movie career, mostly in smaller parts.

One of the best features of this DVD is the first-chapter narration of Max Allen Collins, the writer who took over the Dick Tracy comic strip when Chester Gould retired. He places "The Phantom" in historical context and really sets the scene to help you enjoy the movie. Be sure to see it before going beyond Chapter One.

Jamie Foxx proves a winning romantic lead in the surprisingly subtle Breakin' All the Rules. When Quincy (Foxx, Ali, Collateral) gets brutally dumped by his fiancee, he researches the psychology of firing employees to create a break-up guide--a guide to a kinder, gentler break-up. His cousin Evan (Morris Chestnut, The Brothers) is afraid that his girlfriend is going to dump him, so he asks for Quincy's help, setting in motion a web of mistaken identities that snares Evan's girlfriend Nicky (Gabrielle Union, Bring It On), Quincy's boss Philip (a wonderfully squirmy Peter MacNicol), and a blithe gold digger named Rita (Jennifer Esposito, Dracula 2000). Writer/director Daniel Taplitz gives his characters, if not three dimensions, then two and a half--comedy comes out of their personalities instead of lame gags. Add in some unpredictable plot twists, genuine chemistry between Foxx and Union, and the result is genuinely fun. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars Note to Self:: If You need to Break up Get Jamie Foxx to Do It!.......2006-06-06

Well, first ya gotta look at what type of movie it is. By no means was it planned out to be an Oscar Winner, or a Blockbusting Special Effects Movie...It's just plain Funny. You have about 3 or 4 misdirections in the fact that Quincy (Foxx)is sent his friend Evan(Chestnut) To break-up with E.'s Girl Niki. Who has a feeling that is what is happeneing so she lies and says her name is Mary. So all Chaos insues. But in the end everyone gets the girl; it's a Funny comedy of Errors. As usual Jamie Foxx is funny as ever, and aside from the main plot there are little side things that make you laugh.
I only gave this movie a 3 because I'm comparing it to ALL the other movies...but as far as a comedy Date movies this bad boy is a 4.5+. So I Hope you find this review useful. And Yes the tips in the movie actually are useful. I only gave them a "Field Test" Once...but they worked like a charm. This isn't the same type of movie as Brown Sugar, or any of the other movies that are billing like this one. It is truely in a class of its own. Got a lil' something for the guys to laugh at, and the girls to get a little something out of too.
One thing is for sure...she'll definately understand after watching the movie why the words "Baby we need to Talk" Scare a dude to death. Enjoy Guys!

5 out of 5 stars HELP...!!! Need to find song from this moive. C'mon.......2005-05-31

I have been looking everywhere for this song. I can not find it on any Mystikal CD's. The song is played throughout the movie and also when Q hits his cuz and starts to walk out of the building to get the girl. If you know where to find this song, please let me know.

    3 out of 5 stars interesting.......2005-02-28

this film in some ways was a Pre-cursor to Will Smith's "Hitch".Jamie Foxx is a writer who gives out advice.Morris Chestnut always got a role in the Soul Buppie flicks.Gabrelle Union is cool as always. this film works because it doesn't get to predictable though it does lose some points because not enough laughs or predictable runs in spots.still worth given a looking at.

    4 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining.......2005-02-21

Jamie Foxx & Gabrielle Union are magnetic.

Breaking up with someone is always a difficult thing; especially when the person being dumped isn't ready for the relationship to be over.

But this film gives some great tips on how to do it and get out of the person's house in one piece. I just hope my woman doesn't use them on me! I would be seriously hurt! LOL!

Fun film! One tip though, park your ride in your garage at all times!

4 out of 5 stars CUTE AND FUN..............2005-02-11

Breakin' All The Rules is a mediocre-to-fun movie made more than serviceable by its awesome cast, which include Jamie Foxx, Gabrielle Union, and the gorgeous Morris Chestnut. Jamie Foxx stars as Quincy, who has been unceremoniously dumped by his girlfriend at their engagement party. When layoffs loom at his job, his boss asks him to research the science of firing employees--and Quincy discovers that the manner in which he was "fired" by his girlfriend was all wrong. Research leads to Quincy penning a runaway bestseller on how to break-up with your lover--chock full of theories tested out by cousin and best friend, Evan (Morris Chestnut). When Evan suspects that his current girlfriend Nicky (Gabrielle Union)is about to break up with him, he sends his cousin Quincy to plead his case. Mistaken identity ensues.....and the two become romantically involved. What follows is a hilarious tale of romance gone awry.....great fun!!

Disney scrapped the songs and talking animals for its second version of Rudyard Kipling's classic novel, an old-fashioned boy's adventure that more resembles the classic Korda brothers' lush original than Disney's own animated musical. In this live-action version, Jason Scott Lee (the hunky star of Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story) is the grown Mowgli, a boy raised by wolves and taught the ways of the jungle by Baloo the bear and Bagheera the panther. Fascinated by Englishwoman Lena Heady, whom he spots marching through the jungle on a safari, he follows her to the city. She teaches him the ways of polite society while a greedy British soldier (a sneering Cary Elwes) plots to discover the fabled lost city, where a fabulous fortune awaits. At this point the film becomes more Tarzan than Kipling. Lee's rippling form, back in the freedom of a loin cloth, is on display running through the jungle, swinging on vines, and going mano a mano with snooty Englisher Elwes. His charm and sex appeal has made this film a favorite of many adult women, but it is a family adventure, after all, with colorful locations, grand sets, and plenty of fun-loving animal moments. Sam Neill is his usual figure of moral strength as Heady's explorer father, and John Cleese imparts a little deadpan humor as the safari's absent-minded professor. Director Stephen Sommers went on to direct the 1999 action fantasy hit The Mummy. Ages 6 and up. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars Love is what we need, even in the jungle.......2006-07-19

A super production of 1994 that tried to recapture the magic of Kipling's novel. The emphasis is on the love Mowgli feels for Kitty, though we could not understand Kitty if she did not love Mowgli's beautiful body that he lets everyone contemplate and admire and his deep consciousness of the relationship between nature and man, between human fate and the law of nature the way it exists in the deep jungle of India. In other words she can only love this man who can speak to all animals and order them to speak or keep silent, especially when she looks at the officers of Her Majesty's army around her, human animals who only like killing, dominating, stealing and robbing. Vain, criminal and greedy as opposed to free, strong and generous. But by concentrating the film on this only love affair, the director and producers miss so many aspects of the book that are just as fascinating, like the detailed observation of human nature, of Indian society, of wild animals, of English men when their masculinity is at stake, and in those days their masculinity was always at stake which made them cruel in order to prove they were strong and human. It was a time when cruelty was part of a gentleman's education. This is mostly pushed aside in the film. And I must admit the elephants seem to be quite small in a way and the tiger should have been a lot more ferocious. But you can't really shoot a film like that with wild animals. Too bad. And quite many small animals of the jungle are just absent, like snakes, bees, flies and all the other flying, crawling or jumping insects. The film is then only entertaining, but after all it is intended for kids, and even if we are grown-up kids, we are no longer wearing short pants in the office and going to kindergarten.

3 out of 5 stars Good Adventure For The Family.......2004-12-22

Although "Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book" reminded me more of Tarzan than Mowgli, it is still a good film to watch with the family. Jason Scott Lee does a good job as Mowgli all grown up. Cary Elwes is the perfect British jerk and Sam Neill has a decent supporting role. Lena Heady and John Cleese have the most interaction with Mowgli, and they give the best performances out of the bunch.

The animal cast does a pretty good job as well. Some of the human/animal interaction can be written off as fake-looking, but the majority of the scenes using animatronic creatures look reasonably good.

Young children may be turned off by the deaths in this film, and of Kaa the python, who makes a couple of brief, but scary to a five year-old, appearances. Language, as well as dialogue as a whole, is kept relatively tame. Neill and Elwes let off a few slurs, but nothing worse than the "D" word.

Overall, a decent adventure flick for kids too young for Indiana Jones movies, but who love adventure tales. Another decent suggestion is "The Phantom," starring Billy Zane.

5 out of 5 stars Good old-fashioned Saturday matinee adventure film.......2003-12-01

Oh, this film could have been made for those Saturdays at the movies (25 cents to get in, popcorn with real butter, etc.) Jason Scott Lee is Tarzanly-gorgeous as the grown-up Mowgli, complete with animal sidekicks. The scene where he finds the monkey-king's treasure city is just wonderful.

This is not exactly kiddy-fare (little kiddy) for the opening scene where the tiger trashes the shikari camp are pretty scary--a flaming wagon-ride, and the tiger is pretty nasty. No gore, but still a bit much in my opinion for the early grade-schooler. Older kids and adults, however, will enjoy this worthy adventure film, with not only Jason Scott Lee, but Cary Elwes. Dramatic scenery, humor, adventure, what's not to like here?

3 out of 5 stars Sam Neill was great in this picture and so was Lee!.......2003-09-29

I loved the lush scenery and Cary Elwes getting his snooty buttt kicked by Jason Scott Lee. The clothes were great too.

        5 out of 5 stars Well...........2003-03-31

Jason Scott Lee is gorgeous. All the rest is commentary.

5 out of 5 stars Please, Somebody, Restore This!!!.......2007-06-20

I give this film five stars because it's a gem. I do NOT give the DVD release any stars whatsoever. This is one of those unfortunate films that fell through the cracks into Public Domain (like FLYING DEUCES and ROYAL WEDDING) and has been languishing in shoddy releases ever since. The source print(s)for this DVD leave us with a muddy picture whose Technicolor splendor is reduced at times to sepia or even black and white and whose soundtrack is consistently noisy.

The movie is delightful and in many ways superior to the far more recent remake with Jason Scott Lee (who deserves another good movie, but that's another matter entirely). Sabu, at 18 or so, was delightful and at his boyishly charming peak. So why can't someone take the trouble to locate a pristine print or negative (as they did with FLYING DEUCES) and digitally restore this classic to its original glory? Surely there are enough of us in the world to buy it that the project would be worthwhile!

        5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-06-08

Mom loved it! Revisited her childhood. As good as she remembered it.

5 out of 5 stars The great original version of a fantastic movie.......2006-06-25

This is without a doubt the best version of the original story. A must buy for lovers of classic movies.

5 out of 5 stars The Jungle Book........2005-10-06

A true delight for the whole family. Sabu is a remarkable talent for his age and the overall quality of the film (including excellent colour quality & detail) made it most enjoyable when sharing it with our grandchildren (ages 11 & 15) who reacted with delight from beginning to end. Considering the digital age was a couple generations away, it is a remarkable product of cinematography at its best. I would highly recommend it for any generation to enjoy.

        3 out of 5 stars Jungle Book.......2005-09-08

Although this is an excellent production, the quality of the print was poor.

Rudyard Kipling himself couldn't have imagined scenes more stunning than the ones captured by the creators of The Second Jungle Book: Mowgli and Baloo. The film, a live-action follow-up to Disney's 1994 Jungle Book feature, attaches itself to the loincloth of young wolf-raised Mowgli as he leads a gang of greedy grown-ups on a wild goose chase through the jungles of India, circa 1890. In the course of this breathless caper, a visual delicacy is cooked up. Eyes of all ages will be loath to wander from the screen as it shifts from one color-drenched, wildlife-rife scene to the next. The animals, more than the wilderness, are what give this film its Eden-like quality--Mowgli protectors Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear, as well as wolves, tigers, a pack of prowling monkeys, and even exotic snakes of the deadly variety all mix and mingle to gorgeous effect. And that's not to give the tale unraveling all the while short shrift. Kipling, of course, never once spun a second-rate story, and this adaptation doesn't tinker with way-off ideas of its own. Bill Campbell is fully believable as an Indiana Jones-like circus scout, and Roddy McDowall is at his eccentric best as a cave-dwelling monkey commander. --Tammy La Gorce

        1 out of 5 stars TERRIBLY MADE.......2004-11-17

I have no idea why I saw this movie in the first place, perhaps it was because The Jungle Book is a fascinating story. However I was realy dissapointed not only is the film boring but it is very silly
(in a stupid way). The action scenes were terrible. I recommend this movie to 6 year olds who dont care about the quality of movies.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Adventure!!!!!!!.......2004-05-04

This movie is absolutely great. My parents recently bought it on DVD and we all watched it. It's a great movie which would deserve a higher rating. Many people said that it is boring. I think they have said that because in the first 20 minutes of the movie no one is talking plus Mowgli isn't talking. Well guess WHAT, Mowgli isn't supposed to talk because he was raised by wolves. DUH!! So I really think people should give this movie a higher rating.
This movie is the second jungle book movie where Mowgli finds himself wanted for a circus. Baloo and his other friends want to rescue him and save him. This is a good movie and demands our attention. I suggest that everyone should buy it or at least rent it. I am grateful my parents bought it for me. It's GREAT!!!!

        1 out of 5 stars quite boring.........2004-04-04

the young actor is great in this movie, but the film itself is non-exciting and a bit boring.***

5 out of 5 stars Good movie for whole family.......2003-01-29

When I saw this movie 1st time, I remember for my childhood, when I saw famous The NeverEnding Story first time. If you loved that movie, or E.T., or Indy Jones, then this movie is the right one for you. The only one thing I don't like on this movie is, it's too short. I'm glad that someone's making the movies, where the strong story and very talented actor is more than action superheroes with their blazing guns.

Jamie Williams (Mowgli) is very talented actor. It's very believable that he's real feral child in many scenes. His ability to play character's emotions and his body speech is exceptional. Althought he was 10 and half years old only, he performed all stunt scenes in the movie. In few scenes, he didn't show the fear, when he was about 5 feets far from the adult tiger, who was on thin lead only. Some review says that fake animals are used in some animal scenes. It's not true. They used blue screens and split scenes few times, but all animals in the movie are real.

5 out of 5 stars See this movie on DVD!.......2002-10-26

First of all, I would like to say, PLEASE do not be misled by the few negative customer reviews. Check out the honest editorial review. Also, I was puzzled to see only a few customer reviews for such an amazing and worthwhile film.

This film is a prequel to Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, the live action film released by Disney. It looks and feels very similar to that film, as it was produced by the same team.

My family was familiar with the VHS version. We loved the film, but we noticed some of the limitations in a few of the special effects sequences. We were also painfully aware of the limitations of the full frame format.

This is truly one of the most stunning films we have seen on DVD! The improvement over the VHS version has to be seen to be believed. This is not just exaggerated praise. We have watched well over 200 movies on DVD, and this is one of the best.

The film was shot entirely on location in beautiful Sri Lanka, and the cinematography is breathtaking. Now, thanks to the widescreen DVD format, you can see it all.

Also, in widescreen you can now see all the actors. Many scenes were shot with four or five actors on screen. In full frame, two or three of them are always getting cut off.

Many of the animal scenes have four or five species of animal in the picture. On VHS, you could only see two. Now you can see the whole stunning scene.

The movie has everything -- humor, drama, adventure, excitement, -- and a hauntingly beautiful musical score. At the end, the entire family had tears of joy in their eyes.

Special mention must be made of young Jamie Williams, who gives a most convincing performance.

The film also stars Bill Campbell (The Rocketeer), and Roddy Macdowell in one of his last film roles.

Do not let Columbia Tristar's slightly higher price tag turn you away. And if you have only seen the VHS version, you really owe it to yourself to see the widescreen version on DVD.

One word of caution. The film features Indiana Jones-like action sequences involving live pythons and cobras. It may be too intense for very young children.
