Based on Susanna Moore's popular novel, In the Cut centers on Frannie (Meg Ryan), an emotionally stifled English teacher who gets steamy with sultry Malloy (Mark Ruffalo, You Can Count On Me), a cop who's investigating a series of brutal murders--but Frannie soon suspects that Malloy may be the killer. As a psychological thriller, In the Cut is heavier on psychology than thrills; the story is a skeleton that director Jane Campion (The Piano, An Angel at My Table) cloaks in one of the most nightmarish visions of urban life since Taxi Driver or Seven, accompanied by lots of explicit sex. The movie's dark tone will put some viewers off, but Ruffalo's effortless magnetism serves him well; no woman in the audience will question how quickly Ryan falls into bed with him. Also featuring Jennifer Jason Leigh and an uncredited Kevin Bacon. --Bret Fetzer

So bad it's good, the notorious Gwendoline is one of those outrageously entertaining camp classics that will be enjoyed long after thousands of "better" movies have faded into obscurity. Loosely adapted from John Willie's pioneering 1940s comic strip "The Adventures of Sweet Gwendoline," and directed with good-natured humor by French softcore specialist Just Jaekin (Emmanuelle, The Story of O), this delirious dose of mainstream erotica plays like a sexy parody of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Romancing the Stone. In his own audacious fashion, Jaekin was attempting an ambitious, good-looking adventure with above-average production values, but Gwendoline owes its "bad movie" cult status to its cheesy combination of globe-hopping scenery, tacky sets, hopelessly wretched dialogue, laughably awful acting, and a constant parade of beautiful women, either half-naked or scantily clad in outrageous S&M costumes. The film is also notorious for being the screen debut of Tawny Kitaen (shortly before she appeared with Tom Hanks Bachelor Party), who brings a breathtaking lack of talent (and a very hot body) to her title role as Gwendoline, a scrappy stowaway who arrives in China on a quest to find her missing father, who'd ventured into remote jungles in search of a rare and beautiful butterfly.

Joined by hunky mercenary Willard (Brent Huff) and her loopy friend Beth (played by French model/actress Zabou), Gwendoline survives a variety of absurdly amusing obstacles (including one very phony-looking alligator) until they eventually reach the land of the Yik Yak, an Amazonian slave-culture consisting entirely of slim, sexy women! Through it all, Jaekin's image of women is a source of constant fascination: When they're not kicking ass or running around topless, Kitaen and Zabou act like helpless, virginal airheads who need a man to survive, and Gwendoline plays out like an adolescent wet dream. With a climactic chariot chase that must be seen to be believed, it's all so ridiculous that you can't help but be entertained, and Jaekin's 106-minute, French-language director's cut contains several action scenes that were cut for the film's English-dubbed 88-minute American version, released (and available separately) as The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik Yak. --Jeff Shannon

On the DVD
Jaekin's original cut has been spectacularly restored for this Severin Films DVD release, with both French and English audio tracks and a delightful commentary by Jaekin with journalist/author Tony Crawley and Frederick Levier, former contributor to Starfix, a French magazine devoted to fantastic films; their unabashed enthusiasm for the film makes this commentary an unexpected treat. Also included: a 24-minute video interview with Jaekin, in which he discusses the production history of Gwendoline; a 10-photo gallery of Tawny Kitaen from the French softcore magazine Lui; and a fascinating vintage audio interview with Sweet Gwendoline creator John Willie, from the archives of sex-research pioneer Dr. Alfred Kinsey. Kudos to Severin Films for including these high-quality bonus features with a film that many consider one of the "worst" of the 1980s! One caveat, however: Why not include the American cut Perils of Gwendoline on a second disc, instead of as a separate DVD release? --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars "don't put it away... throw it with great force!".......2007-07-04

Gosh, this is -without any trace of a doubt - THE silliest and stupidest movie I have even seen.

In the Soviet Russia in the 80s, when I was in the university, the only source of information about Western (made in West, not just the cowboy stuff) movies - besides the officially approved and thus empty editions - was a couple of obscure and very cheezy Polish magazines, printed on bad paper with smudged photos and unreadable texts. "Gwendoline" was a sensation with them and they dedicated article after article to the movie (they did the same with Emmanuelle and other softcore masterpieces).
So I finally decided to find out what was all the frenzy about.

Well , the 70s and 80s are over (thanks for small mercies) and the movie proved to be so bad, that it is not even good. You know, how we often say - oh, it is so bad it is delicious. This is not the case. This one clearly transcends the stage "so bad, it is actully good" and goes into "oh boy, bad is not the word".

Even softcore adventures should have at least one good idea, one good laugh and one good line per movie. This one does not. Girls look good (nobody argues) , the boy looks great (very neat six-pack) , costumes (if you can call them that) are rather abbreviated.

Usually when I do not like a movie and do not intend to keep it, I give it away. In this case I dropped it into trash as I would have been too ashamed to give it to anybody - not because of the naked bodies, but due to sheer stupidy of the film.

2 out of 5 stars A Faulty Memory.......2007-06-12

I remembered this movie from high school as a mildly amusing adventure story with some pretty girls showing some of their charms. I had a faulty memory.

The pretty girls are there. Tawny Kitaen and Zabou and definitely easy on the eyes and they show themselves off quite a bit. So do a lot of other girls but those are nothing to stick in the memory. The problem though is with the story.

It is a silly adventure story but it is much worse than I remembered. A girl devotes herself to finding the butterfly her scientist father died trying to find. She is aided by her girl sidekick and by a mercenary guide. They find the butterfly and a lost civilization of Amazons with nefarious plans. Silly but the background is worse.

What I did not remember or realize from all those years ago is that this is some sort of fetish film intended to excite those who like seeing women wear leather and be led around on leashes. Blah!

It was watchable but not very good.

3 out of 5 stars Funny, sexy, but weird.......2007-05-30

This movie is a typical sexy B-movie, but it has enough scenery to keep your attention while trying to find the plot. We watched this twice through, and each time was about the same. Funny, sexy, but kinda cheap and amateurish, like most B-movies can tend to be. Knowing that you are not getting this movie for the plot or action scenes, but for the scenery and Tawny, you can settle in and enjoy this movie. There are a couple of scenes that are a bit gross, but overall it isn't as bad of a movie as I had expected. And yes, Tawny does look good in it. :)

5 out of 5 stars Gwendoline - Unrated Director's Cut .......2007-05-08

Great female adventure film where the female gets to have just as much fun as her male counter-part.

It is what it is, a skin-flick with Tawny Kitaen.

Description

The Punisher walks through the world we all know, a world darkened by war, crime, cruelty and injustice. He has no superpowers to battle the evil he sees - only his fierce intelligence, his years of combat experience and, above all, his iron determination to avenge those wronged by society's villains.

1 out of 5 stars A complete joke!.......2007-06-26

When I saw the trailer for this movie it appeared to me to be just another hollywood product with an already over used formula. That was my first opinion of it. But one day I decided to at least give the movie a chance so I buy it on dvd and as soon as I pressed play I was immersed in what could have been the worst piece of crap I had seen in a long time. I mean there are movies that are ok but forgetable and then there are movies that are just plain ridiculous. The script was retarded, Thomas Jane tried to act, the supporting cast was retarded (neighbor's in Castle's apartment) and I'm sad to say that good old John Travolta was so unconvincing it made me sick. It is always a sad day when great characters are made into awful movies. In the end, the action scenes were weak, the story made no honest sense, the characters were idiots and the climax was just a little too predictable. If you want to see a real movie of The Punisher then watch the 1989 film with Dolph Lundgren, now THAT's action.

5 out of 5 stars THE EXTENDED CUT IS A BETTER CUT....SO BUY IT!!!.......2007-06-22

Yes, the Punisher is a great movie and the extended cut brings more flavor to the story, it has an alternate beginning and scenes that couldn't be in the film due to time restrictions. And yes, I still have the Theatrical version because of the special features. Unfortunately, I went to www.punisher.com and got some sad news, Thomas Jane will not return for Punisher 2, due to reasons beyond his control, he wanted to give the fans what they wanted but apparently the producers were not willing the follow the Marvel tradition. Its' a shame to because Thomas Jane is the best Punisher in my book. So enjoy this while you can!!!

2 out of 5 stars REALLY DISAPPOINTING! ONE OF THE WORST MARVEL MOVIES.......2007-06-17

remember buying the Amazing Spider-man issue that first features the Punisher. I was never a die hard fan,but certainly thought he was cool. I wanted to like this movie and thought it would be one of the better Marvel Comic films.......I was wrong! This movie was really bad and my 2 star rating is generous! I don't even know where to begin with what went wrong. They did not capture the dark, gritty essence of the comic book! The movie was almost laughable! I have not seen the director's cut yet,but I really don't think they can fix this one with some added scenes. If your a fan your gonna buy it any way,but I don't think it's worth the 1/2 inch space it takes on my DVD shelf!

4 out of 5 stars "I Can Hear What You're Thinkin'....." A Truer Vision Of Castle.......2007-06-13

The two versions (yes, rerelease...blahblahblah...waste of our money to make more studio profit....blahblahblah...sorry, I HAD to say it in some form) of this particular adaptation do a great job in showing us the demons that haunt Frank Castle. They do an adiquite (sp?) job in showing us the ambiguous nature of his quest (which ranks right up there with Travis Bickle as who-do-you-root-for? characters), and they make Frank a sympathetic character. Someone you can almost (but not quite) excuse for his harsh brand of justice.

And herein lies the problem - the Punisher, as envisioned in recent Marvel series featuring him, isn't a hero. What he is is a sick man, a serial killer hell-bent on slaughtering as many humans as possible with only him being judge as to whether the victims were deserving of death. On a karmic scale, he only rates higher than aformentioned serial killers or blitz killers because he DOES target scum. As of right now (thanks to the firstly hilarious, now downright serious penning of Garth Ennis), the Punisher is one of the least heroic "heroes" in the Marvel pantheon, and instead of showing us THAT part of Castle's psyche, we get the homogenized, almost-justified version, a clear example of Hollywood not having guts enough to show us moral ambiguity for fear of cutting into mass profit.

Having said this, however, with the extended cut, as in "Daredevil," we get to see an excised plotpoint that would've given us another view, and not a very nice one, of poor deluded Frank. What we should've seen in the first cut of the movie, and we finally get to see here, is Frank forcing a man who'd been his best friend to commit suicide because the man had betrayed him. Does Willis deserve death? Maybe. But who made Frank the judge? A man so obviously, justifyably, addled by the slaughter of his family. THIS is what we should see of the Punisher character - a superskilled Travis Bickle quite able to do what he does well, but leaving us to wonder if he should?

Having said this, however, the movies - both cuts - deserve to be on any superhero movie collector's shelf because director-writer Hansleigh doesn't chicken out as much as the corporate puppetmasters did. He GETS the character, thus pushes the maximum out of Thomas Jane, who also gets it. They both do justice to this rather rich figure of the comic book world and do as much as they're allowed to do to show his ambiguity, his illness, and his tortured soul.

The movie also has a very gritty, real-world feel. This is important because the Punisher was never a man of the glittery super-hero world. His isn't the glamorus high-tech team existance, nor does he crave acceptance. In this film, as in the comic book, Frank knows he's outside what anyone normal considers moral and legal behavior. He doesn't love what he does. The only higher call he feels out of it is the satisfaction of one more bad guy off the streets forever. Jane's interpretation mirrors this - He no longer feels gentle emotions. He no longer ALLOWS himself to feel gentle emotions. He can never have a normal life again. He must do what he does simply because there's no one else to do it.

While I like John Travolta, and his Howard Saint harkens back to the interesting villain he played in "Pulp Fiction," his character simply isn't as interesting as Castle. He plays him as a whacked-out sadist pretending to live as normal, but there's no ambiguity from him beyond this. We KNOW he's evil, and we're quite glad when Frank kills him - his whole screwy family as well.

And maybe this is why the extended cut is the most fascinating. We're allowed to, at least a little, feel the uneasiness of Frank Castle. A once-good man, perhaps a good man still underneath his psycopathy, but one we know is destroyed a little more for doing what he must to the Howard Saints of the world.

By the way, I do recommend, if you're only going to buy one (and, if, *sigh*, like me, you buy both, either get one of 'em used or heavily discounted), to get the theatrical release. There's more behind-the-scenes goodness that shows how they were able to get such a slick movie for so relatively little budget. The extended cut, though, IS the story that should've been told the first time.

2 out of 5 stars 2.5 stars this extended version doesn't make It better.......2007-05-22

Well the title of my review says it all however as a completist in my Super-hero genre of films I would own this version over the original.

3 out of 5 stars MEG DOESN'T CUT IT.......2007-07-03

A very, very bad movie which is inadvertently camp and funny. Meg Ryan looks very uncomfortable with full frontal nudity while Mark Ruffalo looks impressive and relaxed. A silly melodramatic plot with a ridiculous ending. It's amazing Jane Campion agreed to direct this if she read the script. Although a weak movie, most of it is not boring but after watching it you really feel you've wasted your time. And, poor Meg Ryan must have felt her career was over.

5 out of 5 stars Ok.......2007-02-14

Very bad movie but it has Mark Ruffalo with full frontal. Thats worth the price alone!

5 out of 5 stars A great thriller.......2007-01-30

This movie I did throughly enjoy. Granted, this was a guilty pleasure for me, I did get it orginally to see Mark Ruffalo naked and that I did see. I very much did enjoy seeing him totally naked, but I also enjoyed the movie and the story. It was a good solid "who done it" story. Great acting and solid plot. I do recommend this movie to anyone that likes mysteries where you don't know who really murdered the girl.

3 out of 5 stars neither here nor there.......2007-01-30

Jane Campion is a very interesting director of some substance and style. In the Cut is a good trashy entertaining summer read, not great literature. The combination of the two results in a rather puzzling movie where the two elements wind up undermining each other. The movie winds up being nowhere near as fun as the book and nowhere near as compelling as Campion's other films.

Susanna Moore's thin book goes by very quickly hinged on a very filmsy rudimentary thriller plotline and structure, the same as countless other relatively lazy suspense films of recent decades: protagonist meets sexy mysterious but dangerous other person amidst a pattern of killings. Protagonist is attracted but suspicious that the object of their desire is responsible for the murders; who will turn out to be the killer? Of course scattered throughout are red herring suspects and clues to send you in various directions and draw out the revelation of the truth as long as possible. While the book had not much to recommend it with regard to the weak mystery or police procedural material at the core, it had a wonderfully oversexed quality and brazenness keeping you turning the pages and was well written enough in the details. What presumably attracted Campion to the material was the book's clear-eyed and overt engagement with the tropes and types of male-female relationships in the mystery genre; an opportunity to cast a feminist eye on a dynamic of violence and victimization, of the nature of attraction to danger (read masculine danger) and sexuality as self-expression.

An adaptation that recognized that the inherent weakness at the core of the book's mystery fatally undermines its deeper themes, and that instead played this material up for its lurid and sleazy qualities might have been truly fabulous and riveting. But the choice of Campion in trying to pursue the serious side goes in the opposite direction and I think is the wrong choice. She renders the world of New York and the characters with a tremendous amount of seriousness and gravity despite the fact that the plot events are completely farfetched and terribly silly; adding touches of realism to a completely unrealistic storyline and dialogue doesn't produce a more realistic movie, just a confused one. Campion adds a few personalized moments here (like a new backstory about the main character's father with some surreal fantasy imagery, a half-sister dynamic missing from the book where the same character is just a friend) but not enough of her own material to move the film away from the formulaic main storyline into a deeper examination of the supposed themes. Ryan is shot and made up to look as average and mundane as she could be genetically; while such a strategy makes sense to me in a movie like Monster, in the fantasy land that is this implausible storyline, what is to be gained by this approach? Ryan's purposefully unglamorous look winds up almost a distraction, as is an extended cameo from Kevin Bacon, where it's hard to think anything else besides "Oh there's Kevin Bacon."

The ending of the book is, as you might expect, tampered with; besides the box office reasoning, it was hard to imagine Campion ending the film the way the book does. The book's sex scene in the police station is also missing, perhaps unsurprisingly. Otherwise, the film is perhaps too faithful to the book really. Either Campion should have dispensed with pursuing the rather lame whodunit at the heart of this film and gone totally serious doing a film about lonely people looking for sex or someone else should have done this movie as pulpy sleaze noir; it just winds up with too little of everything to be really successful.

Although I assume that potential viewers already interested in this movie are unlikely to be prudes, you should be aware that the unrated cut of this movie contains a graphic and very real depiction of a sexual act not usually allowed in mainstream films (and it does not involve Meg Ryan incidentally). I appreciate the motivation for including the sequence, since the moment is pivotal to the narrative and the change in Ryan's character, but the very real shot of a sex act did have the odd effect by its inclusion of making the subsequent sex scenes between Ryan and Ruffalo seem rather staged and fake in comparison.

3 out of 5 stars A surreal thriller.......2007-01-16

The first few minutes are not impressive at all, just another story about a serial killer and a scared woman meant to another victim, but surely escaping certain death in the last moment. A was about to turn it off, just was curious to know who the bad guy is. Surprisingly, the story was so twisted, I couldn't figure it out right away. The plot is surreal. Some things look familiar but the whole scenes make no sense. Some touches like a girl sleeping in front of the open working fridge are quite puzzling. Pretty much all male characters are worthy serial killer material and the victim turned out to be not that scared either.

After I made it to the middle of the movie it became obvious that depsite of all blood and killings, it's not the cheap violence attracting attentions. Actually, the plot is quite absurd and can be summarized in a couple lines (I won't do it of course) but it is really creative in details and the actors play is quite sophisticated (but has nothing to do with realism).

Overall, if you like "true story" movies, this one is probably not for you. If you find surrealism or modern art attractive, give it a try. The movie is not an Oscar level by far, but it has bright sides.

The Descent didn't actually scare me, but it came closer than any film I've seen. The claustrophobic angles and dark, nearly pitch black lighting really gave it an effect I haven't seen since Pitch Black. The creatures were well done and nearly believable, and quite frightening. I would hate to be in the caves with them. Since this was a horror/thriller, the story wasn't expected to be very dense, and the characters weren't expected to be atypical, and this is usually the fault with this genre. If you want to terrify the audience, you need to identify with the victims and get to care for them. In this film we're just barely introduced to them enough to get to know their stereotype. But all of this doesn't matter when they enter the cave system and we see the beautiful underworld. This cave has never been mapped, so this is the greatest adventure these spelunkers could hope for, until the crawlspaces collapse behind them. With no way back, they move onward looking for an exit when the dark, confined spaces start to take a toll on their minds. But being stuck under the earth is the least of their worries. I really liked how well the film was made, and how complex the story got once the action got started. I said early we didn't expect the people to be atypical, but they really developed under the pressures of darkness, flight and survival.

5 out of 5 stars TRULY SCARY - Blu-ray Perfection!.......2007-03-14

I love a great horror film that can actually make you want to turn the light on or lose sleep after watching it. Every so often a film comes along that accomplishes this and 'The Descent' is a prime example. The film is a departure from the clutter of junk horror films that have been released over the past few years by not merely infiltrating you with just startle scenes. The sheer fear factor of being trapped hundreds of feet below ground with the prospect of death at every turn is simply the cornerstone of the aural terror you feel throughout most of the film.

The Blu-ray presentation is immaculate from the reference quality video to the PCM 6.1 lossless audio track that is amazingly immersive. A must see for any horror fan and a 'high recommend' for anyone!

2 out of 5 stars Review on the film, not the disk.......2007-03-06

I guess everyone's opinion will vary, but I found this film and it's story to be completely lame. First of all, anyone who has EVER spelunked knows that you do not enter a cave without a map. Perhaps if you're some kind of professional adventurer and have the tools, support personnel, and the resources perhaps. However, this group of women certainly did not fit the bill. The characters were not well-developed, as some other reviewers would have you believe. They basically each seemed to fit into the stereotypical "group of gals" roles, when you were given any kind of glimpse into their personas. Really the only characters that were at all developed was the main character and Juno (the idiot that lead her friends, unknown to them, into an unknown cave system), and the both of them barely at that. All we really know about the groups is that they're women, Juno is something of an adventurer and probably had an affair with the main character's husband, and the main character's husband was tragically killed shortly after the group's last adventure.

Once we get into the cave the movie starts to take off...if that's what you want to call it. Yeah, they did a good job with the camera work and lighting, lending a sense of claustraphobia. The 'monsters' in the film really didn't go very far instilling fear into the viewer. The big mistake they made was in showing the enemy. In a movie like this, what you don't know is more scary than what you do know. Unfortunately, they didn't leave you with this fear of the unknown for long. After a short time, I found myself hoping for the ladies' deaths to come quick so that the film would end. I won't ruin the ending, but many of you will be saying, "What?" when the 'twist' is revealed. Fortunately, I rented this movie on NetFlix, so I lost out on nothing more than an hour and a half of my time.

Kip Raines (Giovanni Ribisi) is a cocky young car thief working with a crew to steal 50 cars for a very bad man whose nickname is "The Carpenter." Being young and cocky, Kip messes up, so it's up to his big brother, Randall "Memphis" Raines (Nicolas Cage), to come out of car thief retirement and save him. With a cast that includes Robert Duvall, Angelina Jolie, Delroy Lindo, Cage, and Ribisi, it would be easy to say this story wastes all their talents--which it does, but that's not the point. This is a Jerry Bruckheimer film. A good story and complex characters would only get in the way of the action scenes and slow the movie down. No, Gone in 60 Seconds (based on the cult 1974 film of the same name) is not about the stars as much as it's about cars. Fast cars. Rare cars. Wrecked cars. All cars. Too bad director Dominic Sena (Kalifornia) doesn't come across as more of a gearhead; he seems less interested in fast cars than fast cuts. But is this movie fun? Absolutely, and it's fun because it's so stupid. With pointless car chases and hackneyed dialogue in one of the most predictable plots of the year, Gone in 60 Seconds is a comic film that's not quite a parody of itself, but darn close. --Andy Spletzer

Description

Fasten your seatbelts for the extended ride of your life in this high-performance, fuel-injected GONE IN 60 SECONDS DIRECTOR'S CUT from producer Jerry Bruckheimer (NATIONAL TREASURE, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, PEARL HARBOR). Never-before-seen footage adds fuel to this already high-octane action hit starring Nicolas Cage, Robert Duvall, and sexy Angelina Jolie. A legendary car booster (Cage) thought he'd left the fast lane behind him until he's forced out of retirement to save his kid brother from the wrath of an evil mobster. It's nothing less than a full-throttle race to pull off the ultimate car heist: 50 exotic beauties in 24 hours -- and the cops are already onto them!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars HELL YEAAAAAH!!!!!!!,.......2007-06-20

I thought that this was one of the best action movies I have seen during that year it came out. First of all, it got your adrenaline up, which to me is important. Second of all, it depicts American love for cars and life style in a very accurate way. The way Cage talks and names cars and begs them to be good to him, all that is very specific to this country's culture and if you've ever been to Los Angeles, it makes even more sense. The movie points out that a car is more important then money, then women, then sex and though, not many will agree that it's a positive description, it is true of many people's feeling about it. This movie starts out with Memphis Raines (Nicolas Cage) who is a retired car thief. After his younger brother Kip (Giovanni Ribisi) blows a big job for top villain The Carpenter the older Raines is forced out of retirement to save his brothers life. The cost? He has 72 hours to steal 50 top range cars.

Dominic Sena pilots this basic plot making his intentions clear from the outset with a dazzling high speed chase. Once Memphis is on the scene he has to assemble a crew to help boost the 50 cars on his shopping list on a one night marathon. The supporting actors are good, seeming to vault effortlessly around the poorer parts of Scott Rosenberg's screenplay. Robert Duval deserves a special mention as Otto, Memphis's mentor and teacher. Delroy Lindo is good as the nemesis in the police Detective Castlebeck. Angelina Jolie as Sway, the love interest, has only a minor impact on the proceedings. The real stars of this film are the cars. The actors uniformly do a good job with the thin script.

The actions, especially the final chase, are breath taking, although the actors get mired in the slightly sickly sweet 'brotherly love' theme. With no real twists or complex plotting this is a movie you can sit and watch over and over. Bruckheimer knows his stuff... HELL YEAAAAAAH!

4 out of 5 stars The Italian Job meets the Ocean's series........2007-06-18

A very pleasant surprise, Gone in 60 Seconds, is an adventure that brings to the screen the story of a former car thief who is forced back into stealing in order to save his little brother's life. The problem is that he has to steal 50 exotic cars in only three days' time...
Nicolas Cage, Robert Duvall, Giovanni Ribisi, Angelina Jolie, Vinnie Jones, and the rest of this AMAZING cast, have outdone themselves with their performances, which are commendable to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows! Very well written and very well presented, the movie is without a doubt guaranteed to provide more than just a few thrills, not to mention a few laughs.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, the humor (!), and the music (!) are all wonderful!
In short, Gone in 60 Seconds is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection! BRING ON THE SEQUEL!

I saw the original"Gone" in the 70's & many times times more on cable & I
own the VHS & Plain DVD when DVD's came out. I have seen remakes of other movies and they did suck, but This didn't.

The plot was abit different that the original, but it had to change. Nicolas did a bang up job {No pun} & I liked the ending about family
& saving the cop.I loved the part of mentor played by Robert Duvall, just as crusty as the part he played from Days of Thunder.

But The best part was indeed played by Angelina Jolie.Great Call. Buying the Directors Cut as I type.

"You like sex or stealing the cars?"
"Sex during stealing a car"

It took a bit of time for me to be persuaded to watch this film...but when i did i was pleasantly surprised.

I may be looking at this from a different angle, but i don't think this film is meant to be a car crash/chase fest but more of about the ties between different people with a little humor and hot cars thrown in for good measure.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Fix for a Superman Junkie!.......2007-06-07

Dear God, this is the set I've been waiting for all my life. I have been in love with the Superman mythos since the first movie way back in 1978. A large part of my love with the character is the complexity given by Christopher Reeve's performance which Brandon Routh aptly carried on. Above all, this set allowed me to finally see the legendary cut scenes from Superman IV (And no, they not only do not improve the movie as urban legend claims but make it worse) as well as Richard Donner's version of Superman II (making me wonder if he'd had the time to do some final reshoots and add that finishing touch what it really could have been). I fell in love with Superman all over again.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutley a must have.......2007-06-04

All I can say is if you are a fan of Superman and in particular the movies this is the set to have. It has everything!

And the Special editions and Donner Cuts are fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars UP, UP, and AWAY!!!.......2007-05-09

Almost everything that is needed to say in this Ultimate Superman Movie Collection have been said -- including the raves and rants. I really don't mind the minor setback on Superman III's sounds and Special Features issues, as the movie is not really that well made and interesting. Unfortunately it is, and will always be, a part of any true Superman movie collector or fan's movie library. All in all, it is a great collection to have, and it is still cheaper to buy it this way than to buy the movies separately, plus you won't get the extra goodies included in this special collection. I ordered mine last November even before it was officially out, and I have no regrets with it so far. The packaging was great, it arrived on time, and the DVD's are in excellent condition.

One of the best box sets ever put together for a film series, and a great price for what you get. Almost worth the price of admission just for the Fleischer cartoons, which are the best transfers available anywhere and looks nearly pristine. Throw away your other versions!

A movie that only true horror buffs could love, Army of Darkness is officially part 3 in the wild and wacky Evil Dead trilogy masterminded by the perversely inventive director Sam Raimi, who would later serve as executive producer of the popular syndicated TV series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Raimi's favorite actor, Bruce Campbell, returns as Ash (hero of the first two Evil Dead flicks), a hardware-store clerk who is magically transported--along with his beat-up Oldsmobile and a chainsaw attachment for his severed left forearm--to the brutal battlefields of the 14th century. He quickly assumes power (who else in the Middle Ages packs a shotgun and a chainsaw?), and unites his band of medieval knights against the dreaded Army of the Dead. Raimi gleefully subverts almost every horror-movie cliché as he serves up a nonstop parade of blood, gore, and vicious sword-bearing skeletons--an affectionate homage to animator Ray Harryhausen's classic Jason and the Argonauts. The frantic action is fun while it lasts, but even at 80 minutes Army of Darkness nearly wears out its welcome. You know that Raimi can maintain the mayhem for only so long before it grows tiresome, and fortunately this madcap movie quits while it's ahead. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars Without Embeth Davidtz, this movie is garbage.......2007-04-12

The only thing reedeemable about this movie is the beautiful Embeth Davidtz, without her, the movie is pathetic. Honestly, this movie is one of the worst I ever witnessed. "The Mummy" doesn't even equal its patheticness, and that is saying something!!

1 out of 5 stars WORST MOVIE EVER!.......2007-03-29

Apparently for some reason, everyone loves this movie. They say watch it with fun friends. I did. It was so bad. There is no plot, it goes from one thing to another with no explanation. Unless you don't know a good movie from a bad one, don't get this. The "comedy" in it is so repeatative. He fought the mini version for it seemed like 10 minutes and he fought the deadites in the well for another half hour. The phrase it's so bad it's good don't even apply. It passed that point on how bad it is. The action is horrible, and you shouldn't waste your money or your time on the "greatness" this movie supposedly has. Disgrace to movies and horrible spin off of an H.P. Lovecraft theme.

3 out of 5 stars Great movie - bad transfer.......2007-02-28

I got this one mainly for the commentary track. The quality of the print was hit and miss. Yes, I know they added 15 minutes of footage from various sources, and that would account for some of the inconsistancy of the quality of the print, but there were other parts that are in the standard 82 min. version that just looked awful here. The Universal release isn't the long version, and there are no extras, but IMO the print was better. I understand the Boomstick edition looks even better, though I haven't seen it. Anchor Bay seems to have a history of using bad prints for their DVD releases, and this one would seem to fall into that category. I would recommend this for extreme fans only - just for the commentary, which is pretty good.

Think of Soul Survivors as a more sincere version of A Nightmare on Elm Street. The night before Cassie (the Gwynethesque Melissa Sagemiller) starts college, she gets into a terrifying car accident with her boyfriend (Casey Affleck) and best friends (Wes Bentley from American Beauty and Eliza Dushku from Bring It On and Buffy the Vampire Slayer). But was it an accident? And who survived? Cassie starts college--but she also keeps hallucinating about frightening men she saw at a party prior to the accident, as well as about undergoing surgery after it. Is college itself the hallucination? These slips from one reality to the next build an increasing sense of discomfort and anxiety--though some viewers may be made more anxious by a scene in which Sagemiller and Dushku step into a shower together. Or do they... --Bret Fetzer

2 out of 5 stars Very weird movie.......2007-06-05

I watched it from start to finish and don't understand the movie. It is a very confusing movie.

1 out of 5 stars There's mind-screw, and then there's confusing rubbish.......2007-03-27

The lowdown: A girl named Cassie and her three friends are involved in a car accident in which her boyfriend dies. Two ugly ravers are out to get her. Her boyfriend, not one to be hindered by death, pops up every now and again. And, yeah...that's about it. Think Lost Highway meets Love Story, but with no point.

I like a good mind-screw movie as much as the next Joe, but good grief, Jon Voight, what the h*ll happened to this flick? This had "suck" written all over it from the get-go. It's not often you can tell a movie will bite the big one as early as the opening credits, but Soul Survivors breaks the mold. And to think I watched the extended version, which, you'll be stunned to find out, was one whole minute longer than the theatrical release. One minute. One lousy minute. Can't wait for Soul Survivors: Director's Cut, wherein we're treated to an additional 10 seconds of aimless story.

1) Acting. So-so. Melissa Sagemiller did aight as the titular, tormented lead. Wes Bentley and Casey Affleck were okay. Luke Wilson played a priest who spouted religious clichés. No, it was not as funny as it sounds. In fact, it was painful. Eliza Dushku lets her cleavage do the acting. I would blame the actors, but the screenplay gave 'em jack-all to work with.

2) Structure. Being a mind-screw movie, the scenes ricocheted everywhere. You get flashbacks, subliminal scenes that appear for a split-second, dreams, hallucinations, and a cornucopia of general weirdness. Chris likes mind-screw movies, but the structure has to be tight for the flick to work. Survivors lacked the cohesion necessary to mess with my mind and make the movie enjoyable as a whole. Too willy-nilly.

3) Plot. Cassie (Sagemiller) has a hallucination, then runs away. She then talks to Matt (Bentley) or Annabel (Dushku) who comfort her. Cassie then has another hallucination and runs away. Matt and/or Annabel proceed to comfort her. Press repeat. Yeah, that's my last two hours right there.

4) Repetition. Hehe, please, are you joking? I wouldn't torture a terrorist with this movie.

A true stink-bomb. Watch only for its unintentionally comedic value. The scene near the end where the cops walk toward Cassie reminded me of every zombie movie I ever watched. I laughed out loud right before predicting that Cassie would be hit with a car as she started backing up. Then she gets hit by a car. It's just that bad, folks. The only survivors in this affair are the ones who can sit through this pile of celluloidal excrement and live to tell about it.

Favorite line:
(Cassie to "Raven", who--you guessed it!--is a hardcore raver)

2 out of 5 stars NOT GOOD AT ALL........2006-07-25

The plot of the film was vey promising but it took to long to get to the point and it became boring. Hoping that it would get better I finished seeing the film it went from promising to boring to straight out pathetic. I found that her boyfriend was not dead instead it was her two friend (Dushku and whats his face) and that she was in limbo the whole time while trying to be rivied in the operating table. When you read this it may sound good be when you see the film it's just anti-climatic. The performance where some what stale even though they are all good actors they fall short in this film. I would not recomend this movie to anyone and i'm sad to see many suffered seein this movie just like I have.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best but not that bad........2006-07-06

Alot of people are rating the movie poorly because they didnt understand it. The storyline isnt really that bad. Granted if you dont like movies that make you think then you wont like this. I am very picky about the movies I watch and what I consider to be worth watching. This movie grabbed my attention a few years ago and I rented it and thought it was good. Granted I wouldnt buy it for more than 10 bucks. Its not that bad of a movie. Try renting it before you buy it though. If you like movies with a twist that will cause you to think and keep you wondering then this is a good movie. If you prefer movies where you know everything in the first 10 mins then this isnt one for you.

2 out of 5 stars Killer Cut??????.......2006-03-02

I'm glad I didn't watch the theatrical release of this movie because this "killer cut" is said to contain more blood and more terror. Geez. That must have been boring!!!!!! ( theatrical cut ). This is your basic supernatural movie about a woman who gets into a terrible car accident. She starts having hallucinations and begins to wonder who her real friends are. There is poor acting and basically the movie is boring and doesn't make much sense. Don't let the box fool you for you will be somewhat disappointed.

Aimed at teens with numb senses of humor, The New Guy earns its chuckles mostly by accident. Most of the comedy is DOA, although the cast--especially DJ Qualls in the title role--possesses a modicum of scrappy charm. DJ plays a "blip" on his high school's social radar, briefly jailed for chronic misbehavior and mentored in coolness by a fellow inmate (Eddie Griffin), who becomes the funky "new guy" at a new school, where he's worshipped as a mysterious hipster and attracts the hottest cheerleader (Eliza Dushku). Directed without a shred of inspiration (by a cowriter of There's Something About Mary) and looking like a drab 16-millimeter industrial film, the movie would be a waste of time were it not for its abiding cheerfulness, rock-star cameos (Henry Rollins, Gene Simmons, Tommy Lee), Lyle Lovett as DJ's dad, and a fresh cast that almost makes this lowbrow mess worthwhile. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Funny Movie.......2007-05-02

It is really funny, especially if your looking for something mindless....some popcorn for the brain....when you need to unwind and don't want something too serious etc.

4 out of 5 stars A guilty Pleasure.......2007-01-11

I like the New Guy. It has everything in it to be a dud and it kind of was at the box office. It is however a funny and predictable movie but enjoyable.

Dizzy Harrison(Qualls)is a loser and having a terrible senior year. He gets himself expelled by doing some crazy and fairly entertaining acts. He gets trained by his prsion inmated(led by Eddie Griffin)and sets off to his new high school to rule it. He quickly does and falls for the lead cheerleader Danielle(Dushku). She has a thing for "Gil Harris" as he's known at his new school. The movie then becomes the cliche teen movie it is as Dizzy is faced with the moral problem of being who he really is or losing everything he's worked so hard for. Geesh I wonder how it ends.

I like DJ Qualls. He's such a weird looking guy you can't help but like him. His best movie is still Roadtrip, but he does alright in his leading role here. His dancing is pretty hilarious. He's a funny guy and doesn't disappoint.

Eliza Dushku is gorgeous. Her dancing for her two minutes makes the movie for me. She's likeable as well. She's kind of a stiff in this flick, but that can be blamed on the poor writing.

It's a fun predictable movie. It's not as raunchy as alot of the teen movies so younger crowds can watch it. It's a good movie I'm not embarrased to say I own it. Check it out and enjoy yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely hilarous!.......2006-03-26

My family and I accidentally found this on regular cable tv, and loved it so much, we came to amazon to buy it. I was shocked that none of us remembered any trailers or ads for this movie. It is incredibly funny, for anyone above age of 12.

5 out of 5 stars The New Guy.......2006-01-23

Whenever this guy Dj Qualls is the funny character in the movie, expect it to be funny/stupid. Just the way he looks makes me laugh seriously. This guy is a nerd at the beggining of the movie, then ends up being the cool guy at the end lol. Its funny, all kinds of things happen during the movie to get him where he wants. Definately check this movie out. I havent watched it in sometime so I dont remember it that much, but I remember it being real funny.

4 out of 5 stars Cameos Galore.......2005-09-02

This is a funny movie as is, however, what makes this movie so great are all the Cameos in it (mostly by Music Artist). From Henry Rollins playing a prison warden, to Gene Simons playing a preacher, to Lyle Lovette play Qualls' father, to Vanilla Ice playing an ex-bouncer working in a record store, this movie will keep you laughing. Granted it does take place in High School and geared for the high school/college crowd, it should entrain most everyone 35 and under.

Description

Bound in human flesh, inked in blood, and amazingly hard to pronounce, the ancient "Necronomicon," or "Book of the Dead," transports a department store clerk and his '73 Oldsmobile into England's Dark Ages to face legions of undead beasts in director Sam Raimi's (A Simple Plan) outrageously hilarious sword-and-sorcery epic starring Bruce Campbell (The Evil Dead).

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-07-04

This movie is awesome! I've been wanting to get it for a long time and don't regreat a cent of it.

4 out of 5 stars Army of Darkness.......2007-05-18

This movie was great, very entertaining and funny. If you love Night of the Living Dead, this is even better.
