Tohru Fujisawa's outrageous character Eikichi Onizuka has enjoyed a surprisingly long career: the 25-volume manga Great Teacher Onizuka has been adapted into a 43-episode anime series and, in live action, a TV drama, a TV special, and the feature GTO. In the popular anime series, Onizuka is a buff, foul-mouthed, chain-smoking lecher who ogles his students' breasts. Actor Takashi Sorimachi, who played Onizuka in the TV series as well as the feature, is slimmer, older, and a little less hormonal. In both the live action and the animation, Onizuka demonstrates his affection for his students by administering a slapstick brand of tough love. Onizuka makes it his mission to bring together picked-on nerd Raku (Hideyuki Kasahara) and ostracized rich girl Ayano Katsuragi (Rena Tanaka) in GTO. He defies her big-shot father, outsmarts the local cops, upsets the other teachers, and wins his students' hearts. He also dodges an ambitious journalist who's convinced he's a notorious thief. Director Masayuki Suzuki keeps the story moving and plays the car chases, crashes, pratfalls, and bicycle wrecks like an old Smokey and the Bandit movie. It's hardly great cinema, but it's a harmless diversion for fans who've exhausted the animated version. (Not rated, suitable for ages 14 and older: risqué humor, mild violence, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon
Description
Great Teacher Onizuka has taken the anime and manga market by storm, and now he's taking on his first live action move. GTO is an ex-biker punk who's taken on the formidable job of teaching high school. Lucky for him, street smarts and martial arts are just what the job needs. Like a cross between a thug and a walking, talking after school special, GTO will go to any length to help his kids. However, his career might be in jeopardy when he's mistaken for a serial thief! It's the first of GTO's live action franchises.

The Best of A Great Series.......2003-06-08
This fourth volume in the extremely addicting GTO series is by far the best, having watched the subsequent volumes.
The plot is simple enough: Eikichi Onizuka, a former bike gang member, college karate champ, 22 years old and a bachelor, has taken it upon himself to be the world's greatest teacher. with little or no qualifications, he somehow gets accepted into a prestigious school, is assigned the worst class of delinquents ever, and proceeds to work on taming the adolescent beasts.
Simple plot, complex protagonist. Onizuka is the definition of "man-child," the battle with the man and the child within him always in conflict. This is key as the series plays up the ongoing battle between the students and adults, be it teachers, administrators, parents or politicians. Onizuka is into videogames, internet porn, costumes, launching bottle rockets and ogling schoolgirls. At the same time he has a better sensitivity toward the real causes of the students problems, be it parental conflict, bad past experiences with teachers, money or bullying. Then again, he likes to deal with his problems in the most unorthodox methods, i.e. beating up students.
Just like standard fighting animes, Onizuka has to deal with various opponent-students during the course of the series. By now you'll have been introduced to bully Aizawa Miyabi, super smart Kikuchi, ditzy Tomoko, and fierce Kunio Murai.
This time, Onizuka must face super-hot super-genius Urumi Kanzaki, a blonde-haired, brown-and-blue eyed angel, who gets special treatment from the school, knowing that with such intelligence, her future success means tons for the school's reputation. Her thing is to "ask a question" from the teachers--traslating into humiliating them by showing them she knows more, far more about their subject than they do.
The sub-story line includes a girl from another school with a foot-fetish, who also has sway in getting Onizuka possibly fired.
This volume is great for so many reasons: the introduction of Kanzaki, the extremely fast pace and top-notch level of humor, as well as the ending...guaranteed cool.
The art is on a par with Dragonball Z, and watching this series in Japanese is *necessary*! Not only are their numerous word jokes (that a student is suffering a trauma, pronounced "tora-uma" evokes an image of a giant tiger-horse animal in Onizuka's mind), or that the English teacher struggles with and forces English, the story has pretty significant differences from the English to the Japanese version. The Japanese vocal cast is far superior, and the vocal intonations better match the facial expressions; the storyline and what they say are far more risque and naughtier than the English dub as well.
This volume is what GTO is all about, why the series is as good and addicting as it is. Great story, side-splitting humor, good action, well-felt tension and sadness as well. If I could own only one (which isn't possible) this would be it.
Onizuka can't be stopped!.......2002-12-15
And who would want to stop Onizuka except Uchiyamada (vice principal). Uchiyamada hates Onizuka with a passion. Even in this volume the rage continues especially about his new beloved Toyota Cressida. Onizuka is amazing. He saves the foot fetish girl from kidnappers who want ransom. Onizuka gets seriously injured in this one folks so try not to have a heart attack. I truly enjoyed watching this volume just as much as the other ones.
I love GTO!!! This is a spectacular series that I plan on owning. I plan to buy every volume I can get my hands on. Action, plenty of comedy, and drama with lessons all packed into one powerful punch from Onizuka!!! Class dismissed.
GTO keeps getting better!.......2002-10-12
GTO is the best anime series I've seen in a long, long, long time, and the quality hasn't diminished in this fourth volume. Onizuka continues his hilarious quest to redeem the rat-scum students of his junior high class. What results is the usual hilarious battle of wits (???), and although the resolutions might seem a little sappy, that's okay. A little sappiness can be good sometimes, especially in a show without giant exploding robots or a "jiggle-counter". My one complaint is that the show's opening and ending themes (Driver's High and Last Piece) have been replaced with new ones as of this volume. The new themes are okay, but for me nothing beats the end of each episode when the screen goes white and "Last Piece" begins. Ah, well, if life was perfect it'd probably be illegal.
Great Teacher, Great Anime, Great Fun!.......2002-10-11
The popularity of this series is rising, as DVDs sell out in retail stores around the Bay Area. In this fourth installment of the Great Teacher Onizuka saga, Onizuka chases after a kidnapped student, putting at risk his own future career; achieves fame at the expense of his skin; and encounters Urumi, the "teacher-eater," and comes up with a special therapeutic class for said student that most definitely does NOT come recommended by the PTA.
As in previous DVDs of GTO, the strength lies not in the animation so much as it does in the storyline. There's an urban look to the animation, which concentrates more on storytelling rather than aesthetics. CGI makes its first appearance here in the body of the Vice-Principal's fourth Cresta, but the use of what could be a jarringly inconsistent medium is oddly appropriate given the object in question and frenetic quality of the animation.
Once more, the real strength is in the character of GTO, that off-beat, off-his-rocker gang member-turned-teacher. His unique ways of caring for the damaged goods that are his students would give most people pause. For all his wild, reckless and seemingly irresponsible ways, he's somehow exactly what his students need. The characters and storylines constantly remind us that there's a lack of innovative, enthusiastic teachers in the schools. In the magical world GTO lives in, reprecussions are, if not absent, at least avoidable. The stories seem to suggest that the situation in the schools has become extreme, thanks to well-intentioned but blind parents and indifferent administration and teachers, and that only extreme measures have any chance of success.
As in the previous disks, the writer mostly avoids the trap of stereotypes and cliches. There are no bad people, just damaged ones; children are not inherently evil, they're simply misdirected, misunderstood, or overburdened with parental baggage. In short, humans are human. GTO's erratic maneuverings through the shoals of teenage cliques, antagonistic administrators, jealous colleagues, and self-righteous parents are a joy to watch. If his activities are disconcerting at times, they're also entertaining, and more than once the viewer gets a suspicion he's a caricature of himself.
I heartily recommend this one, for those looking for something more than big-eyed, big-boobed babes. Be warned for a lot of unsubtle sexual innuendo, some pointedly fuzzed-out anatomy, and Onizuka's ongoing hunt for a bit of honey. ("Over the age of 19, a pity about that inconvenient law...!")

"Great Teacher" Eikichi Onizuka drinks, leers, and chain-smokes his way through these adventures at Holy Forest Academy. Unlike the shorter stories in volume 1, most of this five-disc set is devoted to two extended narratives: Onizuka's efforts to raise the money for a class trip and the subsequent visit to Okinawa. The vindictive Aizawa makes it look like Onizuka stole the funds for short outing; rather than expose her deception (and admit he was outwitted), Onizuka plays guilty. He wins back the students by offering them the trip to Okinawa, then has to scrape up 8 million yen. In Okinawa, Aizawa causes more trouble, especially for poor, put-upon Yoshikawa.
Onizuka remains irrepressible and unrepentant, but the writers run out of ideas. The storyline about Aizawa framing the teacher recalls episode 1. The rambling Okinawa storyline suffers from a weak ending: why would Aizawa fall for the nerdy Yoshikawa? And why would Yoshikawa want anything to do with a girl who viciously abuses him, even after he's saved her life? In a final demonstration of loyalty, Onizuka takes the rap when the Board of Education tries to frame Aizawa for murder. He escapes from the police and goes on the lam, abandoning his students and the long-suffering Ms. Fuyutsuki--hardly an example of the revered tradition of the seishokusha (one who works in a sacred vocation). (Rated 16 and older: sexual and toilet humor, profanity, nudity, violence, tobacco and alcohol use) --Charles Solomon

Onizuka provokes the wrath of Uchiyamada when he begins to privately tutor the Vice Principal's daughter. Compromising photos, misunderstandings and general disdain of GTO come to play - as unsual. As if that isn't enough, the street racing school nurse starts selling contraband in the infirmary!
Falls short of potential -- Warning: Minor spoilers ahead.......2004-10-23
Let me start off by saying that I read the manga before buying the anime, so it influenced my viewing experience quite a bit.
That being said, I feel the series was an amusing adaptation of the GTO story and characters. However, after waiting months for the second boxed set to be released, I was somewhat let down (though not enough to make me regret the purchase). The ending was my main sticking point in the series. It just didn't fit at all. My guess is that the anime series got ahead of the manga at the time (as often happens in Japan), ratings went down, no third season was secured and an ending had to be wrapped up in the last few episodes of the second set.
Other than that, the series is funny and at times almost shows a glimmer of the downright touching bits contained in the manga.
This leads me to my second, slightly less major gripe: the changes in the storyline aside, there were many critical points in many of the character's backgrounds and certain key plot points that were changed in a debilitating manor or removed completely. Many of the points that were changed seemed to have been modified to "purify" the show for TV (a shock to me, considering the racious nature of Japanese TV (fan service anyone?)) due to their sensitive subject matter. The changing of these points, specifically Aizawa's reason for hating teachers and Kanzaki's revenge plot against Aizawa (and the complete removal of the REAL reason Kanzaki wanted revenge in the first place and her subsequent suicide attempt), removed the gravity from the situations, dumbed down the series, and inevitably lead to the unsatisfactory ending mentioned in the Editorial Review (which needs editing by the way: it was Uehara Anko causing trouble on the trip, Aizawa refused to even go on the trip, let alone cause trouble on it).
Personally though, I implore you to read the manga as it is far easier to appreciate and well worth the read. I feel you can appreciate the anime significantly more if you understand the characters and their real motivations before you watch this series. It will help you to avoid any confusions one might have about certain events, such as why Yoshikawa and Uehara end up together even after all of the abuse she puts Yoshikawa through, why Kanzaki and Aizawa are at each other's throats, and to tie up loose ends such as what happens regarding the whole Teshigawara mess (they reintroduce him for a few brief seconds for what seems like no good reason (they apparently thought hard about writing his second plot in the manga into the anime, but whoops, no money)).
Overall, while having significantly less character depth and gravity and an ending that falls flat on its face, the series is an amusing and enjoyable romp through the highlights of the first handful of volumes of the manga.
Great Teacher Onizuka!!!.......2004-10-20
This is a must-see anime for anyone with a sense of humor, the plot is somewhat ordinary but the kind of adventures Onizuka gets into are hilarious. If youre into high school type animes, or just any comedy this is the choice for you so.. YOU BUY NOW!!!

Eikichi Onizuka is the teacher in every parent's nightmares, which may be the reason so many ninth-graders adore him. Built like a brick sushi bar, the 22-year-old Onizuka is a second-degree black belt in karate, a former biker, a foul-mouthed chain-smoker, and a lecher. But he's fanatically devoted to the idea of being a teacher and cares passionately about his students. Onizuka administers a broadly comic mixture of tough love and Clint Eastwood-style vigilante justice, which is just what's needed. Every student at Holy Forest Middle School seems to be a misfit, a thug, a bully, and/or the product of an unhappy home. Onizuka's actions bring him into conflict with parents, rival teachers, the PTA, various watchdog groups, and the sniveling vice-principal, none of whom can stop him.
Tomoko is being tormented by an ex-friend, so Onizuka helps her win the local beauty pageant--while ogling her breasts. When bullied nerd Noboru attempts suicide, Onizuka saves his life, trashing the vice-principal's treasured car in the process. He breaks down the wall that divides Mizuki and her parents--figuratively and literally--and is rewarded with her panties. Each act of kindness or courage wins a few more students to his side--and infuriates his enemies. Although the animation is often crude, with distorted drawings substituting for changes of expression, GTO exerts a gross-out, slapstick appeal. It's a long way from To Sir, with Love. (Rated 16 and older: sexual humor, profanity, nudity, violence, tobacco and alcohol use) --Charles Solomon

Great Tomokos Obies.......2007-06-12
I love this show. But it makes me wonder about Japan youth. Are they seriously that messed up? Anyway this is a must have for any anime freak. It has comedy, action, love, and one memorable lead character. Onizuka is the man of all anime leading men. I mean seriously.
This story is about one man's journey to being the greatest teacher in the world. I think he does a damned fine job. How he has to deal with the youth of Japan and make them into respectable members of society. His methods may be a little extreme but that's what makes him the greatest teacher ever.
This show will make you laugh from beginning to the end, and almost every thing Onizuka says is not only the truth but is intellegent. Which is kind of odd when you first meet his character.
All and all this is one of the best shows I've ever seen. Trust me you'll enjoy this.
Peace

Check out the used and new section for the complete collection of the GTO TV series from chap.1-43(end)! Personnally, I saw the whole series and honestly GTO rocks! If you want to die laughing, that's the anime to buy. However people told me that the graphism wasn't as good as in the manga, but I don't really care, I still think that it is great.
This Teacher rocks. .......2005-12-10
This is a good and addictive show that will keep you interested, but I didn't care much for the plot. I mean, it's your typical cool-teacher-bad-class plot and it's pretty much predictable most of the time. Animation looks VERY bad for it's time. The VA is good, Both of the OPs are Awesome! Characters are all good and developed (The students anyway). What troubled me was that there were so many characters, near the end I couldn't remember which was which. Overall, it's very fun to watch, but nothing more (what else is there? ^_^)
Can I give this 10 stars.......2005-06-13
Eikichi Onizuka is a tough 22 year old biker and a foul mouth person but I can't also believes he's is a teacher who really cares about his students and a virgin which can ruin his reputation. He has a weird way of saving a nerd name Noboru who been bullied at school and decided's to attempts suicided. Onizuka saves him by trashing the vice principals treasured car O ya he's a real role model.
PLEASE read the manga first!.......2005-05-11
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE gto, I'm a hardcore fan of gto and I would live on a deserted island if only I had my gto (the manga), which brings me to my point. The manga is MUCH better .. not because the animation is bad (on the contrary I think it's pretty good) but because gto is such a plot filled story that in the anime all that plot was just sucked away. The most important details that in the manga explain everything and the clues and hints given to you volume by volume, are not in the anime. Regardless of that, is SOOOOO GOODD i recomend you to go buy it NOW !!! it's hilarious, original and has deep plot (not the kind of plot that u just want to puke and die, on the contrary) very good plot, and the characters are complex(more on the manga ..much much more). With that said, if u can get your hands on the manga before you see the anime it would be awesome and you will understand what I mean. There's 25 volumes with the 24th out now. Almost over .. :'(
You just can't get enough of GTO, it's an addiction, :D

Ex-biker gang leader Eikichi Onizuka wants to become a teacher--so he can ogle 16-year-old girls. In the first episode, Mizuki, a girl from his class, puts him in a compromising position so three thuggish students can take embarrassing photographs; their blackmail scheme falls apart when Onizuka and a gang capture the trio and torture them. Later, Onizuka helps Mizuki with her family problems--and is rewarded with her panties. The tone of this outré series shifts abruptly from puerile to maudlin to pseudo-inspirational and back. The animation is simple and often grotesquely distorted to symbolize Onizuka's extreme moods and spasms of barely restrained lust. Japanese audiences may find a comedy about a leering teacher acceptable, but the growing concern over abuse makes it a tough sell in America. Unrated; suitable for ages 17 and Up: Sexual humor, profanity, violence, tobacco and alcohol use, grotesque imagery. Contains the first four episodes. --Charles Solomon
Description
Tough on the outside, all heart on the inside, Onizuka turned to the life of a high school teacher for less excitement and action . . . or so he thought. GTO, A.K.A.: Great Teacher Onizuka, is the racy story of Onizuka, a former motorcycle gang member who becomes a teacher to make a difference and...to meet girls? Using his street smarts to deal with colleagues, students and troublemakers, Onizuka finds that he too has many lessons to learn. Containing Four Episodes: (first episode is a 60 min. double episode) Lesson 1: The Legend Begins--Onizuka is assigned to teach a class of juvenile delinquents. In the class, he meets the beautiful, young Nanako Mizuki. He invites her to his place, but finds out it was a plot set up by the class to blackmail him. Lesson 2: Enter Uchiyamada--Onizuka decides to interview for a teaching position at the prestigious Holy Forest School. On the day of the interview, Onizuka rescues a cute young girl from the Holy Forest's vice principal Hiroshi Uchiyamada! Lesson 3: Late Night Roof Diving--As a new term begins at Holy Forest, Onizuka begins his lifelong dream of running a class. Unfortunately, Onizuka learns that everybody who has taught his new class has left because of the mental stress. Lesson 4: The Secret Life of Onizuka--A disturbing picture of Onizuka is going around school. Onizuka starts to worry about himself, thinking he might have multiple personalities. The truth is, his students are plotting against him.

A Must-Have Anime!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-01-29
Eikichi Onizuka...22 yrs old...is definitely an anime character you'll remember for years to come. In this first dvd you'll see how even against all odds...he still comes out on top. Eikichi has only one goal...to become the greatest teacher in Japan. This anime series is definitely one of the most funniest and has one of the most brilliantly written storylines out of the many that are out there. You can't go wrong with this series I promise. So what are you waiting for? Get started now and see just why Eikichi calls himself G T O!
Onizuka has simple needs..........2005-01-08
Eikicki Onizuka is a 22 year old ex-biker who needs a job and likes girls. So getting a job as a high school teacher seemed to be the best way to do both. But, unfortunately, things are not as simple or as easy as he may wish. Just getting the job is at Holy Forest Academy is tough enough, but the kids there are bullies and blackmailers, while some of his colleagues are almost as perverted as he is.
Very funny, but very much for older teens. Five episodes, with extras including original sketches, original Japanese opening, and, of course, previews.
With the Voice Actors of Wendee Lee (YEAH!) and Crispin Freeman it really helped me to enjoy the start of this series. I HAVE to get the next few discs to see what happens and how it develops.
That is a very good Anime :D.......2004-04-11
My rate is 5. Why? Because that anime is different like anyone.
This anime is Funny, amazing, dirty, and fantastic. (Itt élek ebben a h...e oszágban, olyan dolgokat nézek, láttok, amiket évek múlva se látnék a net nélkül :P)
bye everybody
Onizuka blows 'em away!.......2003-08-01
From the moment this starts it's a treat. It has great animation, a great story and Great Teacher Onizuka, the most comical person ever in the history of TV and film. This Volume is the start of the story and from the outset the misadventures of Eikichi Onizuka, 22 years old, are laugh a minute as he tries to become a teacher. Volume 1 contains 4 episodes, the first of which is a double episode, and each episode is better than the last. The only problem is the fact that as soon as it ends, you wish you had the second one, it's the same problem with the manga. Amazing!
What a truly unique and original idea.......2003-06-28
As always my reviews are super short and don't contain any spoilers. GTO is a comedy about a ex-gangsta who becomes a teacher and uses his experience and unique perspectives on life to truly inspire and breathe new life into many of his students. GTO is a hilarious show and I most definitely could not give it less than 5 stars.

GTO is totally awsome.......2002-12-25
so far this vol. is my favorite. its very funny and i can watch it over and over again. it pokes fun at other animes such as doraemon and fist of the north star. I just love this show.
Outstanding anime!.......2002-06-25
Five episodes in the continuing saga of Onizuka, ex-biker turned teacher. In this volume, Onizuka goes up against the PTA; trashes the Vice Principal's car -- again; learns that mothers can still be babes; and teaches the PE teacher that muscles don't necessarily equate to might. As in the first volume, the animation style is slightly erratic, moving between the graceful "classical" anime that most anime fans are accustomed to, and a more urban "ugly" style that exaggerates in moments of stress. While it might be a little jarring to first-time viewers of the series initially, I promise that the style will start to make sense, particularly considering the protagonist's personality. I only watched the Japanese/English-subtitled version, so I'm unequipped to review sound quality in the English version.
The real draw in this anime is the characters themselves, the complicated relationships that move and motivate them, and Onizuka's decidedly unique ways of dealing with people. American viewers may well eye his actions and his students' behavior askance; in the US, Onizuka or the students would have been in front of a judge halfway through the first episode. I can assure you that in the students' bullying at least, this is par for the course in Japan. Given that, I found myself entertained and equivocally pleased by Onizuka's concepts of discipline, and watched with fascination to see how things would turn out.
All characters, even Onizuka's self-proclaimed nemesis the Vice Principal, have three-dimensional characters and complicated motivations. The storylines are interesting, the writing is excellent, the anime is pretty good, and the subtitling seemed fairly good. All in all, an anime that I would heartily recommend.
Childwatch: adult themes, some violence. Also, watching what the kids did to each other left me feeling disturbed. Sensitive parents might want to beware, but it could be a good opportunity to talk to children about bullying and "pack" mentality.
Who ever knew school was cool?.......2002-03-28
GTO (based on the popular comic, and inspired the drama series) is about an ex-gangster who becomes a teacher. He has little clue what a teacher does and he teaches things in a unique way. He knows how to handle anyone thats why the prinicple hired Onizuka. I'd rate this a PG-13 series because there's violence, some sexuality, and profanity. If you've never watched GTO then You're missing out on alot!

Another valuable lesson from GTO........2006-11-04
I've always been a big fan of GTO. This move was funny and as all the GTO movies/series, it teaches a good lesson. If you like GTO and enjoy watching it, you should definitely get this movie.
Not the best GTO, but still worth it.......2005-07-04
Contrary to what the promotional blurb says, the GTO movie is the final instalment in the live-action franchise - not the first. Not that the fact is terribly important - it tells such a self-contained story that one doesn't really need to watch the preceding 12-episode TV series and two-hour special in order to "get it" (as long as one is already familiar with the Onizuka character). If one really wants to view it as such, it may even work as a sequel to the previously released anime series.
However, the lack of continuity with the previous instalments is the film's greatest weakness, from a GTO fan's perspective. Whereas the TV series found a satisfying conclusion, the two-hour special did not. It ended with what could only be described as a cliff-hanger, leaving some very specific questions unanswered, plot points one would assume were left to be resolved in the movie. Unfortunately, the movie appears to almost ignore everything that came before it, only paying lip-service with a couple of vague references (as well as featuring the TV series' title song heavily in the score and a nice remixed version over the end credits).
Onizuka himself is the only character to re-appear, and the new bunch of students just aren't as interesting as the ones in the TV series grew to be (although with the limited running time of a feature film, that is to be expected). These are reasons why, when viewed as the conclusion to Onizuka's live-action adventures, the GTO movie disappoints. When viewed as a stand-alone GTO story, though, it is entertaining enough.
This is my least favorite GTO incarnation. But it's still GTO, it's still good for some laughs, and it's still worth getting on DVD. Here's hoping that Media Blasters will bring over the excellent TV series as well!

`64 Pontiac GTO GRAN TURISMO OMOLOGATO -- The 1964 GTO is the one that started the whole Detroit Musclecar craze -- but it almost never happened. GM's corporate policy wouldn't allow such a lightweight car with such a huge engine, but Pontiac "finessed" the rules by making the GTO an option to the Tempest LeMans. Heavier springs, a 4-speed, red-line tires, and, oh yeah, by the way, the 348-horsepower 389. The cost of this option? Oh, about two hundred bucks. `69 Pontiac GTO Judge HERE COMES THE JUDGE -- Pontiac's GTO is back in 1969 with outrageous paint and graphics, a popular catch phrase, and the 370-horse Ram Air IV engine. What a country!
