The romance that opens Touch Me is clumsy and stiff, but when the plot takes a crucial turn, the movie becomes a surprisingly affecting portrait of coping with illness. Brigitte (Amanda Peet) is an aspiring actress who's just begun seeing Adam (Michael Vartan), the owner of the health club where she teaches yoga. Suddenly her world is turned upside down by the news that an old boyfriend is dying of AIDS--and she soon learns that she herself is HIV positive. She sinks into depression and denial and rejects her relationship with Adam, despite his sincere attempts to move forward with their relationship. Touch Me isn't the most crisply written movie in the world, but its depiction of life with the HIV virus has some genuine grit to it and can be quite moving. Description
In this truly independent Coming-of-Age story, Giuseppe Andrews stars as Coney Island, a young man who is dealing with a lot of the issues facing today's youth: divorce, unemployment, sexual inadequacy and a gigalo father who has just been released from prison! Ever the optimist, Coney Island spends his days singing songs of hope to senior citizens and riding miniature broncos at his favorite playground.
Customer Reviews:
Guiseppe Andrews will be HUGE!.......2006-06-27
Guiseppe Andrews is a new director, and you can have a chance of a lifetime to keep up with the rising of a star in the making, if you start buying his DVD's NOW. Troma is a filmstudio that is the biggest (and only surviving) independent studio, not withstanding all the powers agains them still treating true artlovers the very best in Independent Cinama for over 33 years now. Put the two together and you get a brilliant and ever growing DVD-library of unique films made by someone who will be talked and written about long after we all have gone, as someone who is as unique as Andy Warhol, Orson Welles and Lloyd Kaufman and one of the few big ones to have changed cinema as we know it. Guiseppe Andrews will be imitated, loved, collected and analized.
Many people mistakenly think of Troma as the studio that makes violent and sexy films. Of course they do make wonderful gems in that direction, but there is so much more that most people don't know about. The films by Guiseppe Andrews are amongst these, although I doubt if that be be the case for very long, because worldwide the talents of this highly original and unconventional director are being recognised as we speak. And without Troma the world would not have known of this wonderful talent.
TOUCH ME IN THE MORNING is one of the first films in Andrews' large oeuvre. Shot is a beautifully depressing monochromatic palette it tells the story of the Coming-of-Age story of a young guy who calls himself Coney Island, and who is dealing with a lot of the issues facing today's youth: divorce, unemployment, sexual inadequacy and a gigolo father who has just been released from prison! He goes through this with his own individual optimistisism, which irritates his girlfriend who wants him to grow up. Daddy Bill, however, gives him advice in the ways of life, and Coney goes about on a grotesque and wildly hilarious journey of self-discovery.
Not as complicated and much more assessible than some of Guiseppe Andrews' later masterpieces this is a great way to be introduced to the work of a legend to be.
Three short films by Andrews and an interview with the maverick director conducted by Troma president Lloyd Kaufman round up this amazingly well presented DVD. A must have.
Giuseepe Andrews: Boy Genius?.......2006-02-07
Close. But in truth, Mr. Andrews is, unlike his character in this movie, not a teen. He is, however, a genius.
His genius comes from the fact that he is able to create repulsive characters, and then make the viewer care about these characters. He wrote, directed, shot, and produced this film, in addition to playing the lead role, a character calling himself Coney Island.
The tale is one of Coney's coming of age, told with more skill and humour than any other such movie I have ever seen. You almost don't want to laugh at these situations or characters, but you can't help yourself. Coney is our POV character in this, and the film is told with a bit of in character narration on his part. Normally I do not like in character narration, but Andrews is able to carry it off, making this film look like a peek into the mind of it's lead character.
Despite all of the bad things happening to Coney, though, this is not a sad film at all. He maintains a cheerful, well reasoned optimism that is passed on to the audience.
For now, I am looking forward to seeing his next film, "Who Flung Poo", also from Troma.
The disc also contains several extra features, including interviews with Giuseppe and actor Bill Nowlin, who has been in everything that Giuseppe has directed as of this writing. But what is better is that it includes a trio of short subjects that the director made, "Ants", The Laundry Room", and "Wiggly". These are in the style of the main feature.
The film is shown in black and white. It does seem that B&W is making a comback, in light of such other well done movies as "The Last Way Out" and "Sin City". The photography in each of these films serves to make each look better.
This is one of Troma's better DVD releases. I only wish it were possible to give it more than 5 stars.

Pretty Good Story.......2003-07-23
I love Michael Vartan, and thats the only reason why I thought of even seeing this movie. But I was suprised, it was a good performance on the part of the actors and I enjoyed it more after I saw that Peter Facinelli is in too, its pretty good!!
More Than I Expected...........2003-02-10
When I read the outline of this movie I frankly thought it would be depressing and only decided to watch because of the two stars. However, once the plotline got going it became a truly gripping story that had me glued to my seat waiting for the "happy ending" that seemed impossible half way through. For those hopelessly romantics out there - this is the movie for you! (Michael Vartan isn't to bad on the eyes either!) Enjoy!!
Must See Buried Treasure Romance.......2002-10-14
I think many viewers have avoided this film because they know HIV is in the plotline. We are used to movies about HIV and AIDS being movies about death and dying. However, this movie deals with HIV present day where one can be leading a life and be kept in fairly good health with the right medical care. The issues this person faces are entirely different from those faced back when HIV and AIDS hit the planet decades ago. Chief among those issues is whether one can have a love life, a romance, a career or children if one has been infected with HIV. This movie grapples with all these issues in a romance between the characters played by the wonderfully charismatic duo of Amanda Peet and Michael Vartan. This film is NOT a downer in any sense of the word. It remains utterly faithful to the romance genre and you will love it every step of the way if you love the genre. Women will adore Vartan as a leading man and men will adore Peet as the leading lady. You can't lose.
Micheal Vartan an exceptional actor!.......2002-08-31
What a great movie... love, romance, committment and unselfishness. Micheal you were just beautiful in everyway! Great story line and inspirational love story!
A poignant, original movie.......2002-06-08
Iron Home Entertainment's VHS video Touch Me is a poignant, original movie of a Los Angeles woman whose life is turned upside down when she learns her former lover is dying of AIDS. When she herself tests positive for HIV, she must confront prejudice, ignorance, and the challenge of continuing her life to the fullest in this profound moving, powerfully insightful, highly recommended story. Touch Me is also available in a DVD ...Running Time: 107 min.

Description
When it comes to relationships, the first law of the jungle prevails: you have to kiss a lot of frogs before finding a prince! In this "smart, funny and original" (New York Post) romantic comedy from writer-director Julie Davis, newcomer Marla Schaffel "gives a delectable performance" (Movieline) as a woman on a hilarious quest for perfect love in a dating pool overflowing with toads!Katie (Schaffel) is just your average hopeless romantic searching for the ideal man in the vast no man's land of Los Angeles. When Katie rejects her smitten best friend Ben (Mitchell Whitfield)and instead falls for Richard (Michael Harris), a sexy and sophisticated composer, she thinks she's finally found the romance of her life. But Katie is about to discover that "Mr. Perfect" isn't necessarily "Mr. Right," and that sometimes a "frog" is really a prince in disguise!

"Boredom ... The end of all relationships.".......2006-02-16
The film, "I Love You, Don't Touch Me" explores that old idea of the confusion of love, romance and sex. Katie (Marla Schaffel) is a 25 year-old office temp who wants to be a lounge singer. She's a virgin and she's going to stay that way until she falls in love. She has a platonic relationship with Ben (Mitchell Landon), but he'd like it to be something more. Katie's best friend Janet (Meredith Scott Lynn) swears that Katie is in love with Ben but doesn't know it. Ben, unfortunately, doesn't fit Katie's romantic ideal, and she's just not physically attracted to him. Katie selfishly expects the ever-hopeful Ben to always be at her beck and call, and she even sets him up on blind dates with her most unappealing friends. Ben rants and raves to his therapist about Katie's selfishness, but nothing ever changes.
When Janet and Ben start dating, Katie is stunned and upset. But then she bumps into British composer, Richard Webber (Michael Harris). He's the ultimate smoothie, and he's exactly the sort of person Katie should try to avoid.
"I Love You, Don't Touch Me" from director Julie Davis is full of cliches, and some of the lines are so old, you can hear them creak. The film, however, includes frank discussions of sexuality, so this is not a goobley-goo romance. The film explores the idea of sexuality and comfort levels in the context of the romantic, intimate relationships that both Katie and Ben want--even though they both seek those things through more sexually adventurous people. One great character is Jones (Darryl Theirse), Katie's musician neighbour. While, as a friend, he sympathizes with Katie's dilemma, he also tries to explain relationships from a male perspective. Janet works as a good foil for Katie--Katie wants romance and wooing, but Janet abhors the very hint of intimacy. This isn't a dating/romance film--it's a lively look at how one woman has to adjust her notions of romance back to reality while still hanging onto her values--displacedhuman
Very good.......2003-12-24
I thought this movie was pretty realistic. I happen to be nearly 26 years old myself, jewish, and yes a virgin. This movie gives me some hope of finding someone. There are older virgins out there in today's world.
The ending could have been better, however. She decides she loves someone (I won't give away who) for no apparent reason for this ephifany. She tells him, and that's pretty much the end- another twenty minutes of them together, and some real showing of her love for him would have been nice.
Further, in a conversation with one of her friends she berats him for keeping his women friends seperate from his lovers. But, this is hypocritical- she's doing the exact same thing. This annoys me.
Exc ruc iating, amateurish and an insult to Jewish women.......2003-12-22
A very lame, low budget indie flick about an affluent 25 yr old Jewish woman living in LA and trying to break into the music business as a lounge singer, with the improbable idea that in the present day ('97) this young woman would be a VIRGIN. Sorry, this idea ALONE is enough to sink this film and that's not considering the other terrible problems in the script, direction and acting.
The only possible explanation for a woman of this kind of background (educated, well-to-do, liberal Jewish upbringing, moderately attractive, thin) being a virgin would be extreme religious beliefs, physical deformity, gross obesity OR she's been in a coma for 8 years. There is no believable explanation for the character's lack of sexual drive or experience, except that she wants to meet "the perfect" man (with a big penis AND big wallet...how crude) and get married.
Katie (Marla Schaffel) is a grating, shrill charicture of an overbearing "Jewish Princess" stereotype so flat and one dimensional that it would border on anti-semitism if I didn't strongly suspect that writer-director Julie Davis is Jewish herself -- the self-hating kind. Who would WANT a miserable, shrewish, interfering, clinging witch like Katie? You can easily imagine this character in some trite sitcom, set 30 years in the future, in which she is an equally stereotyped "nagging Jewish Mother".
Add to this a deary, cliche-ridden script which is painfully unfunny and unrealistic (unemployed Katie lives in a fancy, decorated apartment in expensive LA, as do her friends). She smashes her car into a FERARRI, and the driver is a famous composer (fortunately, as Katie is an aspiring singer) who instantly falls for her and isn't put off by her virginity.
The tiniest saving grace here is that Marla Schaffel (who has never acted in films before and it shows) happens to be a Broadway Tony-nominated singer and she has a wonderful voice. I wouldn't have minded listening to her sing for 90 minutes, but watching her act is agonizing. She doesn't look young enough or innocent enough for the utterly unworldly Katie.
Everyone else is incredibly flat, lifeless, trite and corny. This whole things plays like a failed pilot for a sitcom. The bad language, references to sex, body parts etc. seem like dropped-in crudeness in a lame effort to sound trendy. Also the ending is very abrupt, as if they literally ran out of script or money and just stopped filming. There isn't a realistic or believable moment on the screen.
Detailing the bad dialogue and terrible writing would just take forever. Trust me that every second of this (except for a couple of the songs) is jut unendurable. An insult to women, and an insult to Jewish women in particular. Yecch.
Hope to find it in DVD.......2003-11-25
Wonderful movie! Hope to find it in DVD format soon :)
I don't think of you that way!.......2000-08-23
Rarely is there a movie that comes along that has the message that this movie has. Want you want is what you need, just because everyone else is doing it, that does not mean you must participate in what everyone else is doing. Seeing behind the outward appearence, we see a woman who is conflicted about her feelings and how she wants to react to them. This movie shows that sometimes when you want something so much, you will overlook the most obvious solutions to you probelms and your happines can elude you due to your narrow focus on the prize.
